So I Saw This Costume...

Pocketful of Miracles / Glenn Ford as Dave the Dude

While not a Christmas movie per se, this story does take place around the holidays, and Dave the Due is dressed for it with a peppermint-striped shirt and holly boutonniere. The dark tie and pocket square give the look some grounding. The jacket has notched lapels and flap pockets, marking it as a relatively casual outfit despite its striking color.

Two particular features stand out, showing the attention to detail from designer Walter Plunkett: first, the gold collar bar (see bottom photo) is a touch of elegance that goes beyond the run of the mill, showing the care that Dave takes with his wardrobe. And second, the jacket is constructed with no vents (slits) in the side or back. This was typical of suit jackets from the 1920s and early 30s, but vents became so common after that time that not having any is clearly a nod to historical accuracy. (This scene takes place in 1930 or 31.)
