Candy Cane Lane with Eddie Murphy, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jillian Bell is a fun, entertaining with a relatable storyline movie! Everyone loves a little competition right??! But what happens when the competition goes a little too far? DId you say trouble?

In this holiday comedy, Chris(Eddie Murphy) looks to beat his neigbors in a holiday decorating competition to win a BIG cash prize(so he thought) after a major setback at work and goes off and makes a deal with a disgruntled Elf.

This can't be good, right? Chris gets his family involved involuntarily with this deal and they find themselves trying to dig their way out and may have lost sight on the real things that matter. Can they find their way back to what matters as a family? And beat this Elf(Jillian Bell) at her own game. She doesn't play fair. So the Carvers may have to get a little creative! sighhhh

I'd say this is a good movie to add to your Christmas movie lineup. The family will enjoy watching this one together. There is something for everyone in this movie. Chaos, drama, comedy and heart-warming moments. There's something magical about this movie, and you'll know exactly what I mean once you have watched #CandyCaneLane Rottentomatoes rated this movie 45% - but I think it exceeds this score. My rating: 70%

Gem glanced across the table, readying her stance next to the gumdrops. Next to her, Pearl looked like she was about to maul the bowl of frosting that has been assigned to the two of them. Across the table, glaring back at them with the wrath of a lifetime rivalry, were Scott and Cleo, with their own respective ingredients. Gem glanced at Impulse, who was fiddling with the timer on his phone, looking vaguely threatened by the whole situation.

It was year 7 of the Great Gingerbread Contest, starting when she and her brother were just teens. Over the years, they had acquired Pearl and Cleo as teammates. No one in particular timed the challenges, and this year it was Impulse only because he was in the band Scott and Gem had started.

“Ready!” He yelled. Both teams tensed up. The Gingerbread in front of them was already assembled (because it was the worst part of the whole thing) and every candy fathomable was set in front of them, ready to be used and chimneys or doors or yard decor. “Fifteen minutes… and go!”

Gem and Pearl worked in sync, spreading the icing and sticking the gumdrops to the roof, the mini candy canes to the yard, the chocolate bars as the windows. Impulse called 10 minutes after what had felt like 30 seconds, and Gem whirled her hands around even faster, putting together (what she would consider) her best house yet. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Scott and Cleo’s house, with considerably messier piping, but they had a color theme. She silently cursed them for thinking of only using green and red, unlike the rainbow vomit of colors hers was. 

Gem glanced at Pearl, seeing the same worried look in her eye. They couldn’t stop now, and it was too late to totally restart. They could only hope theirs was prettier. It wasn’t entirely a disaster, it was still a beautiful house with a shingled roof and chocolate square walkway.

Impulse called five minutes, and within seconds, Scott could be heard swearing under his breath. Gem concentrated on the icicles that were being piped, ignoring the cursing until Pearl elbowed her. She looked up, glaring at her friend, before looking across the table.

Scott and Cleo’s house had fallen down.

She stared for a second, laughter bubbling up her throat despite the pit she felt in her stomach. She knew Pearl was grinning wildly, thinking they had this in the bag, but… it felt like cheating. One of the houses had never fallen down, and it wasn’t a factor anyone had taken into consideration. Gem wanted to see both houses finished, side by side, not one finished and then a pile of cookies and candies. 

Impulse started counting down from a minute. Pearl grabbed the icing from her, finishing the icicles herself. Gem looked between the fallen cookies and her gingerbread, sucking in a breath.

“Pearl,” She started, getting the other girl's attention. “Do you trust me?” 

“Yes?” She replied slowly, halting in her decorating.

“Great.” 

Gem took one of the walls of their house down, not without momentary struggle. Pearl didn’t say anything about it, but had an understanding look in her eye. It collapsed with barely a bump,  

“Three, two, one!” Impulse finished. He looked up, gazing at each of their houses. Scott seemed to only now notice what had happened. 

“Well,” he started, “It seems we have both been eliminated.”

“It seems so,” Gem giggled. She noticed Cleo looking mildly miffed. 

“Both of you lose!” Impulse announced, sounding happier than anyone else in the room. Scott just laughed, picking up a piece of his broken house and taking a bite. Gem couldn’t help but do the same, initiating a gingerbread cheers.

Just some points on my modern au:

Both Dorian and Manon are from old money families (it’s how they met it was during an exclusive event)

Dorian hates it lowkey he wants freedom and to do as he pleases so he skips as many of these events as he can. But he also knows that if he leaves and Hollin gets in charge… their family would be over because his brother will ruin everything. So he stays around for the sake of his family.

Manon is the opposite. She is always present and taking charge of things in hopes that it would appease her grandmother. But just like everything else she does, it’s never good enough.

She’s a perfectionist who always needs to be in control otherwise she starts falling apart.

She was raised on the notion that emotions are a weakness, and she wouldn’t dare bring shame on her grandmother by being emotional. So from a young age she learned to suppress her emotions and carry on.

She is what her teachers would call ‘academically gifted’ but the truth is, she spent many hours studying and skipping sleep in order to be the top student at her school. Even when she was burnt out (she usually spends summer break studying for the next school year before it starts) she keeps going. Result? Getting a final score of 99.7% caused her to have a breakdown because how was she so careless as to lose that .3%? Her grandmother wasn’t too happy with her score, and she made that very clear.

She’s just so emotionally repressed and very anxious but she’s so good at hiding it no one can tell anything is amiss. Because when Manon is having a breakdown, she does so privately behind closed doors.

She has attachment issues and she’s very emotionality dependent on her dog. Abraxos is her rock and she has no idea what she’d do without him.

Those attachment issues? (Thanks to grandmother’s emotional and mental abuse) Manon often ends up with awful/toxic men just because they’re giving her the right attention that makes her easily want to be with them thinking it is ‘right’ and honestly just doesn’t think much of it (Asterin notices tho and she and Sorrel are always ready to interfere).

She doesn’t have much faith in men anymore. One night stands are way better than a steady relationship and so she swore off dating. All she needs is Abraxos anyway.
