While there is a growing “wellness” movement in Hong Kong, there’s no denying that it is a party town. It is incredibly easy to go out every night of the week and with frequent fly-in fly-out visitors things easily get out of control in the name of hospitality.

I’ve been conscious of this since arriving in October and have done a reasonable job of balancing the party scene with hiking and exploring, but in May decided that I was going to challenge myself to survive the month without a single hangover. “This will be good” I thought “still have fun, but sensibly, and not to excess.” May came and went, bookended by trips to Guam and Beijing and nary a hangover to be found. But could I really claim to have made it through the month having curbed the hedonism?

In June I had two consecutive Saturday brunches that were the definition of excess: free flow Veuve Clicquot champagne and all you can eat (delicious dim sum at Duddell’s and an….interesting mix of Italian and Japanese at Aqua) both brunches followed up by even more champagne. On both subsequent Sundays I awoke to…nothing. No hangover. Nary a headache.

Concerned that my tolerance for alcohol was becoming a little too high I decided that for the remainder of July I would abstain from drinking, and two weeks in it has been….fine.

I haven’t been sitting in my apartment like a hermit (that would drive me to drink!) but I have also been judicious in choosing my activities; I haven’t been avoiding social occasions that would involve drinking alcohol, but I have been avoiding socialising when drinking is the objective. So, a work dinner ( at the delicious Ho Lee Fook,) watching the State of Origin at a bar in Wan Chai, and last night’s amazing 8 course dinner from the team at One Star House Party were no problem, despite my companions imbibing to their hearts’ content.  

I haven’t observed a noticeable difference in my energy levels despite sleeping better, but my eyes and skin are clearer and though it wasn’t the objective, I’ve lost two kilograms.

I’ll report back on how the final two weeks of prohibition play out, but if you’re considering a break yourself, here are some great non-judgey resources I came across:
