lounging, reading, relaxing. three simple activities, but ren only excels at one, and only when no one else is around to disrupt him. though, to be fair, calling dan heng a disruption might be a stretch. he isn’t doing anything overtly irritating, not by most people’s standards anyway. but ren has his own rules about what constitutes a bother, and while those rules have loosened slightly in recent times, he still finds himself irked.  

apparently, spending quiet time with dan heng isn’t enough. it has to be here, in this shared space, where ren sits cross-legged on the floor in front of a sofa while dan heng carefully tends to his shoulder-length hair with focused, deliberate movements. across the room, sprawled on another couch with an air of absolute ease, is a certain white-haired general. the ornate coffee table between them feels more like a barrier than a connection, and ren’s patience teeters on the edge.  

with a flicker of mischief, he lifts his leg and nudges the table with his foot, just enough to make it shift and hopefully startle the lounging figure. to his dismay, the general doesn’t so much as twitch. not a single strand of snowy hair stirs, nor does any reaction follow. ren grits his teeth in silent frustration and returns his attention to the man behind him.

“ nothing about my hair needs fixing. ” a mirror hangs on the opposite wall, casting an unfortunate, yellow-tinted reflection of ren and dan heng’s interaction. the image feels surreal, like a fragment from a dream, a hazy memory, or a glimpse into some alternate universe where nothing bad ever happened to them. perhaps, in that other world, this moment might have been their natural outcome, a life untouched by hardship, where ren isn’t constantly calculating the risks of stepping outside the very house they’re sitting in.  

ren’s hand drifts almost absentmindedly to the ends of his own hair, wrapping a lock around his finger. he fiddles with the strands as if reacquainting himself with something familiar yet distant. his gaze doesn’t stray from the mirror’s reflection, his eyes glued to the subtle, precise movements of dan heng’s hands. yet, a weight lingers in the air, a thick, invisible blanket of unease draped heavily over him. it’s a sensation he can’t shake, even now, when everything should feel fine, when they’re supposed to be safe.  

with a quiet exhale, ren reaches for the book he had been pretending to read before dan heng took it upon himself to toy with his hair. flipping through the pages with practiced ease, he pauses as if searching for where he last left off. his index finger trails over a random line, then another, plucking out isolated words to focus on, though the meaning of the text barely registers. it’s a half-hearted attempt to busy his mind, a fragile distraction from the unease he can’t quite name.

“ i’m hungry. ” fingers tap against the book in his hand, drumming, steadily. “ finish up already, let’s get some food. you always say you're the better cook. prove it. ”
