A/N: Timebomb fans get a few crumbs today. As a treat. (This is a mega slow burn sooo)

Summary: The new group meets in Heimerdinger's study to see the hexcore. Opinions are slowly revealed. The drama will ensue next chapter. *dies of sleep deprivation*

Heimerdinger's office was a decent-sized study, but it felt a bit cramped due to the amount of furniture and decor inside. His desk, made of dark wood, was at the end of the room and accompanied by a small blue velvet chair crafted just for his size. In the front part of the room, there was a round wooden table surrounded by four velvet seats. To the right of the table, against the wall, was a fireplace. Next to the fireplace, there was a brown loveseat as well as two blue armchairs.

Jayce, Viktor, Caitlyn, and Sky all sat around the round table. Vi and Mel each sat in an armchair. Ekko sat alone on the loveseat.

Caitlyn's question sat in the air, Heimerdinger-- sitting at his desk-- answered first. "This is our final student in the group, Jinx!" He said, voice cheery trying to lighten the mood. His attempts went unnoticed as the tone was still gloomy. Jinx eyed everyone in the room, her look a mixture of disdain but also awkwardness. She looked at Caitlyn and Vi the most. "Jinx," Vi said, seeming stunned. Ekko had the same expression. 

Jinx took a few more steps into the room. "Please have a seat, Jinx," Heimerdinger said. Ekko patted the spot next to him on the loveseat. It was the only spot left, besides, Ekko wanted to sit by her. Their conversation got cut short the last time they spoke, but his curiosity about the girl never left. 

Viktor and Jayce looked at each other. The tension coming from Caitlyn next to them made everyone at the table a little uncomfortable. Mel had the same gaze as Caitlyn. They heard the same rumor about Jinx, but something didn't click for them the same way it did for Mel and Caitlyn. 

"Hey Jinx..." Ekko greeted as she took a seat next to him. But Heimerdinger cut off any further conversation. "Now that you're all here." Heimerdinger cleared his throat, hopping up from his seat and strolling to the front of the room. "You were all chosen for this research project based on the impressive performances and character you've shown throughout your time here. I hope you don't find yourselves worried about this project, especially you first years." Heimerdinger winked. "But I must stress the importance of what this means. Not just for Hogwarts, but for all of magic."  Heimerdinger said, addressing the students. 

"What are we researching anyway?" Vi asked, leaning her cheek on her hand. Heimerdinger looked toward Jayce and Viktor, giving the two a nod. "It's a new type of magic. We call it the hexcore." Jayce explained. "It's not like any other kind of magic we have seen before. It's physical matter, organic even. Completely different from any of the incantation and mind-based magic we have learned before." Viktor elaborated. "So this magic isn't manmade then? It just existed on its own?" Sky inquired. "That is right Miss Young. Or, at least it's what we believe." Viktor answered. "The Hexcore came from something I came across as a kid, a story for another day, but after some experimenting with Viktor... Well, It turned into what it is now. I believe runes will be the next step in the research. But we are open to ideas." Jayce said. Vi nodded. "So... When do we get to see this thing then?" Jinx asked. The group looked to her. Caitlyn snickered. "Yeah, where are you guys keeping this core thing?" Vi asked. Ekko nodded to this. Viktor and Jayce looked to Heimerdinger. 

Heimerdinger reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a wand. He gave it a wave in the direction of the fireplace. A tangled, blue corkscrew of particles spewed out of the wand toward the fireplace. Suddenly the sound of stone shifting could be heard. The fireplace moved to the side and revealed another area within the study. It looked like a lab full of various equipment, chalkboards, and papers scattered. In the center on a pedestal was the hexcore. "Awesome," Vi whispered.

Jinx stood and Ekko and Vi followed behind her. The three walked toward the core and examined it. "I don't feel good about this," Mel whispered to Caitlyn. 

"Pretty," Jinx commented, surely thinking about what kind of a boom it could power. The core shifted from purple to blue hues. It glowed and ebbed in place. "Yeah." Vi agreed, eyes glued to it.

"What does it do?" Ekko asked, looking back to the others. "We don't know. But it's powerful. There's a lot of concentrated arcane energy just in this room alone because of it. We've just been trying to find a way to make it come out." Viktor said. "Runes are my guess. But, It'll take some work to figure out which ones, the patterns, and how many. It's not a simple equation by any means..." Jayce explained. 

Viktor placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, before removing his hand and heading over to a bookshelf. Scanning the books, he paused on one. It was a leather-bound journal. He grabbed it and brought it to a table in the lab. Flipping through several pages, he landed on one that had scribbled handwriting and a rough sketch of the core along with what seemed to be runes. The bottom of the page was signed with the name Jayce Talis.

"Come look at these, It's the notes from the beginning of our research to about a week ago," Viktor said backing away from the table and gesturing to the book. Jinx, Vi, Ekko, Sky, and Mel took turns flipping through the pages of the book. Absorbing the basic information known about the hexcore. 

Jinx grabbed a nearby sheet of paper. Flipping it over to a blank side she took a pen and began scribbling away at something. "Got an idea sis?" Vi asked, walking by her. Jinx paused her writing for a moment. She still wasn't used to hearing her sister's voice. "Just messing with some numbers." Jinx said as she resumed her writing. 

Sky and Viktor began discussing theories in the corner of the lab, while Jayce navigated between their conversation and Mel and Caitlyn's. Ekko continued flipping through the pages of the journal, and at another table, Vi and Jinx were busy crunching numbers. 

"Wow... You're pretty smart," Vi remarked, watching her sister write. "Surprised?" Jinx replied, half-joking. "Not at all," Vi said. "I wouldn't expect anything less from the girl I knew." 

She didn't intend for her words to sound negative, but Jinx sensed a hint of disdain or regret in Vi's tone. "The girl you knew has changed a lot," Jinx said, bringing her knees up in her chair. "I know. I have as well," Vi agreed.

While writing Jinx let go of her pen. "I forgot something from the journal." Jinx groaned. "These numbers aren't making sense." She said.

"I got it." Vi said pulling out her word. "Accio." Vi said pointing it at the journal. With a spark of magic, the book flew toward them. Vi caught it with ease, meeting Ekko's gaze.

"Hey! I was reading that." Ekko complained. "Sorry kid, we need it for a second. Actually, you should come over here and help." Vi said. Ekko stood up and plopped himself at the sister's table. He eyed the paper Jinx was writing on. "Impressive." He commented. Jinx's eyes met his in a shy moment before looking away.

While Sky and Viktor shared their thoughts on the hexcore, Jayce moved between his conversation with them and the discussion with Caitlyn and Mel. Caitlyn and Mel started by exchanging theories about the hexcore. Both excelled in their classes, particularly in History of Magic, so their focus was primarily on that. 

"Piltover mages have talked about organic magic before, but it was always more of a theory than a fact. Magic, as we know it, is typically witch-made, so this anomaly is very intriguing," Mel said, gazing intently at the hexcore.

"Couldn't have phrased it better myself," Jayce chimed in as he approached the girls. "The hexcore is indeed an anomaly, a fascinating one. I must admit, I have wondered if it could be a way to harness magic—without the blood-given gift of being a wizard or witch. Perhaps this could allow even muggles to use magic." 

The room fell silent for a moment as they absorbed his words. Magic for everyone. 

"Now that would be quite the discovery," Viktor said, a smile spreading across his face. Most of the group murmured in agreement. 

"Yes, it would..." Mel added, her voice barely a whisper. No one seemed to notice the deeper tone in her words, except for Caitlyn, who immediately sensed something was off in Mel's tone. She just couldn't tell what it was.

"What time is it?" Vi asked, looking at Ekko. "Why do you only ask me that?" he joked. "Because you're the only one who carries around a pocket watch," Vi teased back. 

He pulled the watch out from his robe pocket and checked it, cringing a bit as he did. "5:00 already?" he said. "The day went by fast." 

Vi's eyes widened. "Shit. I'm going to be late for Quidditch practice!" She exclaimed, jumping up from her seat and reaching for her brown messenger bag filled with supplies. 

"You coming with me, kid?" Vi asked Ekko. He had been watching their practices recently. "Yeah, I am, but stop calling me 'kid.' We're both adults now, Grandma," Ekko teased. Vi rolled her eyes playfully, then looked at Jinx. "You're welcome to join us too, sis," she said, extending the invitation. "You should," Ekko added, his eyes pleading with Jinx. 

Jinx blew a piece of hair out of her face, eyeing them both in defeat. "You're going to bug me if I don't, aren't you?" she asked, a hint of humor returning to her voice. Ekko smiled. "Maybe, maybe not. But you probably don't want to find out," he responded. Jinx sat up from her chair and grabbed her bag too. "Fine. I wouldn't want to miss seeing Vi land on her face anyway," Jinx joked. 

Ekko and Vi both smiled at her, then exchanged looks with each other. They were happy to see her joking around. They thought that maybe this could be the beginning of rebuilding that bridge which had burned down so long ago.

As the three approached the door of Heimerdinger's office, Caitlyn stopped them. "That's where I recognized you," she said to Vi. "You're the Gryffindor Quidditch captain?" Her head leaned a bit when she asked. "That's me," Vi replied, her expression proud. 

"I recently joined the Ravenclaw team, as the new seeker in fact." Caitlyn proudly admitted. "I guess we’ll be seeing each other on the field sometime then?" Caitlyn added, a smirk tugging at the corner of her pale lips. 

Vi couldn't tell if Caitlyn was being friendly or malicious at that moment. "Guess we will," was all Vi said before continuing toward the door. Caitlyn watched as the three of them left the study, her eyes never leaving them until they were out of sight.

"Something wrong Kiramman?" Mel asked, noticing her stare. "Nothing at all," Caitlyn said, before resuming the science-related talk. 

Caitlyn had mixed feelings about the girl. She was the Gryffindor quidditch captain, naturally a rival in that sense. 

She was also somehow selected to join this group at the same time as herself. But Caitlyn had seen how she acted in class, and it was less impressive than what you'd expect for a student of that accomplishment. Especially with all the pranks she's pulled. 

Caitlyn felt a sense of rivalry, also a mixture of just pure confusion. But there was something else to her feelings as well, something she didn't know, or maybe didn't want to know. 

Whatever it was, she decided that she'd be paying a visit to the quidditch field before returning to her dorms. A little observation never hurt. Especially if it was observing both the quidditch captain and one of Hogwart's most mysterious students.

Somewhere in the great expanse of infinite possibilities, they're the one wishing you were real.

IF jayce and viktor had to be assigned hogwarts houses (which i think the practice of should be ended bc its just giving in to rowlings reputation when she should be banished) then i would say that obviously theyre either both ravenclaw or both slytherin or one of the other.

“But jayce is a soo griffondore or however tf u spell it” NO HES NOT. Hes not a fighter, he would let the world burn if it meant keeping those he holds dearest safe

He was willing to die for his work, was single minded in his focus, had so much ambition- thats like the pinacle of ravenclaw or slytherin. Idk he could go both ways. So could viktor but hes more obvious. Idk its almost 3am and i just saw another piece of fanart depict jayce as a gryf and i needed to get this out. I stg ppl only put him in that house bc he of the talis house colors which is the stupidest reason ever to assign a house

Jayce had seen Viktor before but he was more excited about the Tournament than the batch of foreign students

I don’t remember how it was in the book, but for me, it’s sort of a student exchange program, so there’s nothing weird about foreign students being around.

Would Viktor and Jayce experiment with the expanded Leviosa area during a shared class later on? You know the answer.
