Walking Away Means They Win
Let me preface this with: you should engage with the media/content/SPORTS you want to and you should protect yourself and your experiences in life as best you can. This isn't about anyone choosing to throw the deuces and peace out of hockey - that is such a valid choice.
It's a tough sport to get into as a fan, especially if you aren't a middle-upper class cis straight white guy. There are a LOT of barriers in place. It's not a progressive league - from ownership/admin all the way down.
BUT there is room for growth, there are humans involved who are decent, and there are kids everywhere who deserve the chance to grow up playing a better sport in a better community in a better society.
I'm pissed as all hell about the... ABOUT THE EVERYTHING, let's be honest. This year alone, the league has condoned or ignored and hand waved a LOT of shit that make it incredibly difficult to be a fan. And that's just this year.
But those rich white asshole dudes with their bullshit don't deserve to get to drag this sport down. It's not for them. It's for everyone.
So fuck the Oilers, who routinely make decisions that seem to prioritize 'giving second chances to scumbags' over, you know, building a winning team or something. But also, fuck those guys, I'm gonna still cheer and watch games and write bullshit and draw bullshit and I'm gonna do what I can to support the great things this sport CAN do.

Re: Umich rumors.
Okay sorry that I have to do another PSA but I feel like this is something I need to address... again. TW for brief abuse mentions under the cut. If you don't feel like reading this, or if you don't have the stomach to read it, here's a TL;DR: There's rumors about UMICH being spread around, however most of it has come from a gossip blog, and nothing from an actually reliable source. Anything that comes from a gossip blog should be taken with a grain of salt.
Recently, there's been rumors that there's been hazing and sexual assault going on in UMICH (University of Michigan), particularly their hockey team. Now allegations like this are seriously, especially when there's players from UMICH playing in the NHL (ex. Luke Hughes). However, the only source of those rumors are from a gossip blog and anons on said gossip blog, which started the rumors. I have yet to see anything in the news about this, and because the primary source is an anon (combined with the posts being deleted as of this post), it's impossible to confirm if they are a student from the university itself or even one of the victims.
Now, I know hazing and sexual assault is always something to be taken seriously, especially with more stories coming about these sorts of things in sports (ex. Northwestern University). However, I do want people to keep one thing in mind; Gossip blogs are not reliable sources. Most of them are just that; gossip. And gossip is something that isn't always true. Another thing to keep in mind is that anons can be easily faked (Thanks, Tumblr), so anons are also not always reliable. This isn't to say that every anon is a fake, of course. However, anything that comes from a gossip blog should always be taken with a grain of salt. Also, most of us aren't detectives (not even me!), so it's impossible to determine if it's actually true or not. It's also pretty disgusting that a gossip blog is potentially starting lies about something as serious as SA, and I'm horrified that people are falling for it. Again, sexual assault is something that needs to be taken seriously, but gossip blogs are not good sources when it comes to something like that.
That said, keep this as a reminder to *please* check for sources before posting something or sharing something online, especially with situations like this!

My thoughts, a mini essay to make sense of nonsense.
So, we all remember when the Wild split up The Deweys, and the reasoning was "Hey, young talented players, they deserve play-off experience and we want what's best for them *cough* can't afford to pay talent *cough*," yes?
We, the carers and feeders of ridiculous relationships that are real and evident and exist and bring tears to peoples' eyes, saw that splitting up the boys did what the suits said, experience, experience, etc, etc.
So, with Ullmark to the Sens, we are breaking up a relationship that is real and evident and exists and brings tears to peoples' eyes, because the partnership has outgrown itself - mentee overshadowing mentor - and *cough* money *cough*.
And lo and behold, both Deweys ended up in the post-season, on shiny teams that did well.
What does this all mean? *shrugs* Who knows. It's already been stated that it's a one year deal, Ullmark isn't going to re-sign with the Sens. Buuut, he declined a trade earlier with his no-movement clause, so why now, why the Sens, why break our hearts?
Is he sacrificing himself for Sway's future (yes), or is Ottawa a really great place to live for a year (um, maybe?). Why do I pick the self-sacrifice flavour of explanation? Because of this: what is different between this trade and the earlier, refused, trade? The play-offs. Specifically, Sway's experience and performance in the play-offs.
Thus, like the Deweys, a great relationship that is real and evident and exists and brings tears to peoples' eyes ends because some players are just too gosh darn good, and other people think they should have all the good things. Even us, the carers and feeders of ridiculous relationships, because we did have it and we did care, and that doesn't change.
Thank you for witnessing my rant, I'll be back on this street corner next Tuesday.

This isn’t for you or any of the other ppl that run gossip blogs it’s more for anons who send in stupid fucking shit to you guys: Just because a player likes someone else’s picture on IG, doesn’t mean he’s cheating. Or they’re dating. Or whatever weird fucking things y’all say. These guys are SLUTTY, and will like girls’ pictures. Relax. Stop submitting things about likes to blogs and then getting upset when they tell you it doesn’t mean anything. They’re right. It doesn’t mean anything. Okay?👍
remind me to never make you mad girl oh my god lol. luckily i’m pretty free of the shackles of submissions like that but i know some of the other blog owners have to deal with those kind of submissions (and are nicer than i am because i wouldn’t even respond to them).
you’re right on them being “slutty” (that made me giggle), they’re literally frat boys. liking girls’ pics on ig probably right before they slide in their dm’s? classic frat move. very man-in-his-twenties, too, and very single professional athlete core.
and while i’m sure it might be frustrating or repetitive to see submissions to all of us like that, it’s what’s bound to happen on gossip blogs, especially when everyone who likes certain teams or players doesn’t live near them. they can only really access these guys’ social platforms, and that’s how they contribute to all of us and this bubble we’re all in, so maybe looking at it that way will change your perspective slightly 😌❤️

My brother really looked me in my face and said he wants Connor McDavid to win the cup. Just because he deserves it. And because "the oilers sounds cool and they're from Canada"
Okay bro but doesn't Mr McDavid have enough? The all-star were essentially the Connor McDavid invitational (no I didn't come up with that, a commentator did but he's right lol) and he won that so... Let someone else have a good day too
Not the mapes, clearly. Them leafs haven't won in...... Almost 60 years? Something like that. They haven't won since our parents were in elementary school like my brother in this Subaru there are more pressing shenanigans that just the one of three hockey players you know the name of
*For legal reasons please note this was not a serious rant*

I’m starting to think that Blais was the division in the locker room Trouba was hinting at a couple of months ago during a locker room interview during our losing streak and on his first game back in St. Louis he scored a goal meaning that he wasn’t fitting in on the Rangers.

But what else do you expect from a bunch of conservative straight white men who play in a sport with barely any POC? Not to mention how hockey is an expensive sport that isn’t accessible to many kids that are from the inner city and non-suburban areas, while they were raised in upper middle class or rich neighborhoods by parents who were sometimes previous NHL or hockey players in general that had access to funds and resources that others didn’t.
But that’s just my take
Hockey twitter and tumblr finding out their faves are conservatives every 3 business days and genuinely being surprised gets me every single time omg

Vijendra Singh, our Olympic medal-winning boxer, said that as professional athletes they are capable of shedding 5-6 kgs overnight. Vinesh is no amateur and it is an absolute joke that she was disqualified for a mere 100 gms. Do these Olympic authorities really expect us to believe this bs?
Here is what he said,
"I think it might be sabotage. 100gm, you have got to be kidding me. We athletes can shed 5 to 6kg overnight. It is difficult no doubt but we know how to control our hunger, thirst, and exert to the extreme".
"And when I say sabotage I mean people who are not happy to see India rise as a sporting nation. This girl has been through so much, your heart breaks for her. What more could she have done? Which other test?"
Mahavir Phogat also said that if a wrestler is 50-100 grams overweight they are usually allowed to play.
A similar thing happened with our men's hockey team as well. Amit Rohidas, who should've been given at max a yellow card and 15-minute time-out, was given a red card and suspended for the next match as well. He hadn't done anything that merited such a harsh punishment.
India was forced to play without a key player for two matches over nothing.
Paris Olympics 2024 is such a fucking embarrassment.

I'm seeing more "Bedard doesn't wanna be in Chicago"/"Pull a Lindros" discourse... again -_- And tbh, everytime I see it, I think of the folks who wanted Bedard to join the Canucks instead of Chicago. And every time I think *that*, I immediately think of the Canucks' owner, who may or may not also be a piece of shit himself.

maam give us the essay 🤲🏼 im on booktok but stay far away from romance, dark romance, and spicy booktok bc the women in their 30s and 40s are fucking weirdos over there so tell us why you think its bad
the women in their 30s and 40s on romance booktok are fucking weirdos you're so right. okay.
my issue with fancasting actual hockey players could be summed up literally by just saying "kierra lewis," and that'd be enough, but in being around hockey so much and around booktok, this weird line begins to form and quickly blur where these people forget that hey, that's actually not garrett graham from the off-campus series, that's actually just ethan fucking edwards. that's not logan from off-campus, that's mat barzal, a real life hockey player.
and, it always gets ugly when hockey fans find hockey romance book tik toks, because the hockey fans are like "bitch that's fucking braden schneider, that is not [character] what the hell is wrong with you" and then the arguing starts, especially when a booktok creator is posting a sPiCy scene from a book with a picture of fucking jack in the background, because, if you look at it from the side of someone who doesn't read, let alone romance books, and isn't on booktok, it looks CRAZY.
lastly, you know, i have seen one too many signs at games (not just at prudential center, because there's always at least two, but at other arenas) that are like "CAM YORK, YOU CAN BE MY RED-HAIRED JOHN TUCKER AND BE MY BABY DADDY" (real sign i saw once, you guys, and fucking hell, i almost threw up.) like, hey, maybe we shouldn't ❤️ do that ❤️ ever ❤️❤️❤️
but that's my spiel on the dangers and issues of fancasting/face-claiming real athletes as fictional ones. do you guys agree? am i being dramatic? do you think this should be stopped for players' safety? i wanna know what all of you think about this happening. 💋

sometimes i hate being a woman because i just realized i’ve been living vicariously through so many nhl players this entire time because i will literally never make it to that level of professional hockey even though it’s always been my dream. like no matter how hard i work at it or how bad i want it, i will never be good enough because of my gender. it hurts so much to think about the fact that even 100 years from now there will probably still not be room for women in the nhl. little girls will continue to grow up with unachievable dreams because there is nothing in place for them to achieve them. the PWHL only had their inaugural draft this past season. we are over 100 years behind. currently the most you will probably make in the PWHL is $80,000 a year and the average nhl player gets paid $3.5 million per year. that means the HIGHEST PAID women in the PWHL will be paid 43.75 times less than the AVERAGE nhl player. currently, the highest paid nhl player receives $12.6 million per year. 157.5 times less. i’m not even angry about this. it’s just heartbreaking to sit down and think about it sometimes.

I honestly hate the people who are taking the EF stuff about Marner and going "wHaT AbOuT tHe PlAyOfFs?!?"
Marner could have a dominant playoff performance. He could average over a point per game in the playoffs, lead the Leafs to the Cup and win the Comm Smythe. And those same people will go "well do it again next year" and "where was this before?"
Just admit you hate the guy, you're never going to give him credit when he earns it, and go cheer for another team

nhl rant
i’m really pissed about how arizona hockey lost their franchise just like that and was given to utah where a church that has bigotry ties is trying to get involved with the team in utah.
i know all teams do have some weird/horrible people involved but utah literally is a proud religion over law type of state if i remember.
it’s unfair how last minute this was for coyotes fans, players, staff, etc. people are going to lose their jobs and they’re jobs that they loved. i do hope hockey returns to arizona but eventually having more than 33 teams will be a lot to keep up with. i get growing the game, but just adding more teams all over the states won’t properly grow it.
also hearing that they literally left arizona legend shane doan’s banner in the old arena and abandoned it?? the disrespect?? it’s also big to acknowledge that there are hockey players like auston matthews, matthew knies, the tkachuk brothers, etc who are arizona born (not sure raised) but without arizona hockey, some players would not be the players they are today.
