I got something cool from another Etsy shop recently! Which is, the world's tiniest* weaving heddle:
*probably a slight exaggeration
Tumblr media
I've wanted to explore weaving lately, but don't have the money or space that you'd need for a tabletop loom. So I knew I wanted a backstrap loom setup, where you stretch your weaving between a distant anchor point (in this case, it's pinned to my lap desk) and like, well... a strap that goes around your back, basically.
(Normally the perfect solution for this is tablet weaving, which is even easier to get the tools for. Unfortunately, it requires MORE BRAIN. So I'm taking the easy route here.)
So my heddle and shuttle are from TheDancingGoats, an Etsy shop that specializes in reproduction ancient tools.
And what do you know... the shop sponsored Long Thread Media on Youtube, who did a whole tutorial on how to use them:

A year ago today I gave a lecture on using historical research to inform your costume design. If that's the sort of thing that might be useful to you, you're in luck, because Cartoon Crossroads Columbus recorded it and posted it up!

Do you have recommendations for dress history youtube channels? I'm a very bookish person, an amateur historian of literature, and i want to understand the practical side of how clothes were made and worn. the pictures in my books only go so far.
Sure! There's some books that also go into the historical construction of clothing, most notably Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion series, which is an invaluable resource. Here's my most recommended YouTube channels who do historical costuming and talk about dress history in general:
Nicole Rudolph Abby Cox Morgan Donner Cat's Costumery Snappy Dragon Bernadette Banner priorattire Adelaine Beeman-White Karolina Żebrowska Samantha Bullat

Time for Halloween Makers' Master Post
Hello ghouls, goblins, trick or treaters, or all those looking for ways to make a costume to go bump in the night. I have a bunch of videos for you that you may want to watch, and quite a few are feasible for a beginner to make
We'll start with some hats:
youtube
youtube
youtube
Now how about for your fingernails?
youtube
Or maybe just a basic costume shirt or dress with a fun print?
youtube
Perhaps you're more of a knitter for a bit more of an advanced project, and into cosplay or books?
youtube
youtube
If you know how to make a jumpsuit, or have a jumpsuit pattern, maybe join the Fallout bandwagon and crawl out through the fallout with some Vault Tec fun?
youtube
youtube
Lastly, if you're not in the mood for a costume, but would like a little decoration, or some company, how about a little plague doctor made of felt to be a little friend on the spooky night?
youtube
Whatever it is you do this Halloween season, I hope you stay safe, and have fun!

Our 18th century lady is actually a vampire. The historical accuracy, let alone existence, of which is debatable, but here we are.
