It really depends on how well you can keep count of things. Crochet always depends on you remembering how many stitches you made, plus adding the row switch stitch at the end of each row. Knitting doesn't use as much brainpower unless you're doing something complicated, but its often a repeated row, and its fairly easy to count the stitches you have and still need to do for each row
Probably likely the reason I knit more than I crochet

Step 0: Think to myself "I should try taking up a fiber art in my increasingly rare free time"
Step 1: Get how-to books out of the library
Step 2: Ask tumblr which I should try (first - no guarantees I don't switch/do both!)
Additional info, if it is useful:
I learned the basics of both knitting and crocheting when I was much younger but didn't take either up regularly
I have access to lots of (low-quality) yarn to practice on but would probably need to buy needles/hook (unless I find some at work and/or my parents' house at some point)
I like tying knots! for practical purposes and things like making bracelets, making mats out of ropes, etc. So I figure this could be an extension of that

I did the provincial voting thing today. Anyone in Ontario, you should too! Don't ever think your vote doesn't matter, because it really does!
I went to an early voting station, but regardless if you go earlier this week or on Thursday...
Vote like the very existence of our country depends on it, at the Provincial and Federal levels!
As a reminder, you DO NOT NEED your voter registration card to vote! Just be sure to bring the required ID
Everything you need to know to vote is on the Elections Ontario website, which is https://www.elections.on.ca/
I know this is a sticky subject, but let's face it. The conservatives will not act in the best interests of the country, and likely bow down to the Felon.
I don't know about you, but I do not want to be American.
I like my free healthcare, and social services, that I rely on, on a regular basis.
So ...don't split the vote, and use https://votewell.ca/ to figure out which party will beat out the conservatives in your riding.
The Ontario premier will be a very large deciding factor on who winds up being Prime Minister.
Let's not hand over the province to a corrupt politician who is under several RCMP investigations for corruption, along with the bunk science behind the closure of the Science Center, the spa that no one will visit at Ontario Place that no one asked for, wants to spend billions without a defined plan to build a tunnel for cars, tear out bike lanes that are already there, and causing more money wastage, and trying to mow over the Greenbelt
This is on top of wasting taxpayer money on useless PR stunts in the states, in the past two weeks alone, and refuse to provide details on how much it cost us.
The Liberals are more likely going to shove the conservatives out by sheer numbers, so if anything if you can, and if they are likely to win in your riding, vote Liberal, or vote NDP

Adding my small tablet weaving to the mix. TBH it's not hard, its just hard to remember which way to rotate the cards before you get stuck
There are patterns called "twist neutral" that you might want to look up. I can't remember the source for it. I remember someone in the SCA-sphere telling me there was someone on youtube who teaches those twist neutral weaves

When I was done with this weave, I used it as a decorative element for a hat I made for college

Just a short video of my card weaving in progress

this messed up vintage cat sewing pattern has tormented me since i saw it & like some other folks have done in that post - i tried my hand at tweaking the pattern to resemble the illustration (and my personal tastes) a little more. i've ended up with this, which i have only tested at a small scale and not this final version exactly (where i have done such things as further widening the cheeks and finalizing the leg shapes.) i bestow it upon you nice folks now 👐
go forth and make weird little beanbag kittens! pls show me if you do!

FIBER ARTISTS, I want to know what yall do the most so let’s do a demographic poll
I know we are all victims of the fiber art rabbit hole and nearly all of us dabble in more than one craft, so please vote for your MAIN one, the one you do the most, the one you can do with your eyes closed, and maybe share in the tag what else you do! I hope I covered most of the crafts.
REBLOG for sample size!

I would say yes, I would, since it's something I have been looking into already and I'm also very tired of the food service/customer service grind, being yelled at or sworn at over the phone or through the computer, burgers thrown in my face, or threatened because someone got their food too fast or not fast enough, being called a bitch or a whore before the person even places an order because they disrespect women...ugh.
I just want to make stuff, to slow down fast fashion, keep a roof over my head, and not go crazy because entitled people are awful

Greetings!
Wow! hi! hello there!
So many new followers! Welcome!
I have a feeling many of you found me via @theshitpostcalligrapher for some sewing and crafting content of many different varieties, but mostly sewing.
I certainly have that available for you, and especially if you're newer to sewing.
I know I don't post as often as other creators since it takes time to plan, pattern, develop, film and edit projects, and it's...just me doing it all.
But what I do put out I try to pack full of information, and try to make it as easy to follow as possible.
With that said, if you want more, please check out my Youtube page!
If you get stuck on a project, you can also ask me on my YouTube page, and I'll try to help you out, or potentially here.
Also just remember, most of what I teach about 90% of it is more like guidelines, than actual rules
Hope you all have a good time, and welcome to Kiera-Oona's DIY!
My main blog @kieraoona is more for shitposting, vibes, and venting, more than sewing, crafting or cosplay.
So everyone grab your needle and thread, or your knitting, or whatever you're working on, and we'll have a good time!

@theshitpostcalligrapher has been learning so much about all things sewing in the process! I think it'll turn out fantastic once its all done!
shoutout to the Look tm on the face of the proprietress of the local fabric depot in response to me wandering my ass in there like "Hi! I only need a little bit of lining fabric to patch the inside of my coat. It's a little old haha I got it in 2014"

Important! Your pet's RFID chip number might have been disconnected this week.
Is your pet chipped? They should be. Do you know who made the chip?
Pet RFID chips are so small that there's really only room on them for a serial number. When your lost pet is brought to a shelter or a vet's office, they can scan the chip, read that number, and then type it into a program that draws from a series of linked databases to find your name and phone number. That's how they find you, and tell you that Silly Lilly von Wigglesbottom has gone wandering, and she's safe and sound, and would you come get her, please?
Texas-based Save This Life, which provided chips to vets and shelters all across the US, has all at once and abruptly gone dark; their database is just gone. Their customers were not given warning and so did not know to change their registration to another company. A lot of animals have basically become anonymous now.
If you don't know what company you've been using, call your vet's office and ask what pet chip number they have on file. If the chip number starts with 991 or 900164, it's probably a Save This Life chip.
If it turns out yours is one of the affected cases, the chip itself will still be fine! There's no need to add another, or anything like that. You'll just need to transfer the number to another company, and your vet should be able to recommend the one that they like the best.

I have stepped up to avoid one of those crafts from becoming further endangered, by taking up Millinery

I also put my process on my Youtube channel in case anyone's interested
I challenge people to post up if they know a craft on this endangered crafts list above

I’m gonna teach you to fix your dang pants
Alright are you DUMMY THICC with POWERFUL THIGHS that keep DESTROYING YOUR JEANS? Are you super fucking broke and can’t afford new clothes? Would you rather not contribute to disposable fashion, one of the MOST UNETHICAL industries of the modern age, on which I have many thoughts? I’m here to show you how to keep your pants on unnatural life support until they literally disintegrate off your legs.
You’ll need some basic sewing skills and supplies. If you don’t have a sewing machine, jump to the end, I’ll add an epilogue just for you.
Step one: look at this disgrace. How did this even happen. What was I doing.
Now you don’t need to do this next bit, especially if it’s a less extensive repair, but I’m going to show you how to make a nice pattern for this, if you like nice patterns.
Turn one leg inside out and put it into the other, so you can see the tear.

Put a piece of paper on the area and trace around the hole - it’ll take some guesswork, but you can figure it out. You want it big enough to cover the hole, and extending far enough from it that you aren’t just sewing into places where the fabric is worn super thing. I like to stop at the crotch and inner leg seams, both because the pants are shaped there so it’s hard to get a patch to span it without something puckering, and because it’s a good sturdy anchor to sew to. Mine looks like this. Yours will…probably be smaller.

Now cut that shape out of some fabric. I cut two, because I have similarly shaped holes on both sides. You do NOT need to add seam allowance. For the fabric, I recommend cotton twill or canvas (not treated canvas, you don’t want anything plasticky on your crotch). Twill is what most casual pants are made of (denim is a kind of twill). Canvas is the same but heavier. You’ll want something that roughly matches the color of your pants, obviously. I did not have this. I decided I do not care. My pants will look DUMB but I am a GOBLIN.

I serged the edges of mine (because I’m the kind of goblin with a SERGER but not TAN FABRIC?? apparently) but that’s not necessary. Turn your pants inside out and pin the patch in (one at a time, if you’re doing multiple). Make sure the patch lies completely flat against the pants fabric, and isn’t bunching or bubbling.
Now shove it under the sewing machine and stitch around the edge. I recommend sewing right on top of the existing seams where you can, since the pants are sturdy there. The tricky thing is not accidentally catching other parts of the pants while you’re sewing around the patch, but you can do it, I believe in you. If you mess up, just seam rip that bit and try again.
Once the patch(es) are in, turn them right side out. The holes are covered, but there’s a bunch of loose, ragged fabric flapping around that’s just going to keep getting shredded.
So take it back to the sewing machine, and just…sew everywhere. Start at the edge and make a big spiral to the center. Or make a bunch of parallel lines. Or start wherever you want and just go wild. But fill the patch with stitching everywhere there are two layers of fabric.
This not only keeps the layers together but REINFORCES them, so your sad pants will be STRONGER THAN EVER. It’ll look like this, and you’ll be like “ew, everybody’s going to see my butt stitching.”

But they won’t. Trust me. They won’t. Because it’s all up in your butt crack, and if they’re looking close enough you’re legally allowed to kick them. Even with my dumbass fabric choices, you can’t see it at all from the front (enjoy weird blurry shot of my crotch).
And you can barely see it from the back.
AND NOW YOU CAN WEAR YOU FAVORITE PANTS, AND NEVER BUY NEW CLOTHES EVER AGAIN. I think I’ve done this to EVERY pair of pants I wear on a regular basis. Some MULTIPLE TIMES.
My note for people without a sewing machine: you can do this by hand, it’ll just take longer. Use sturdy thread and sew with a prick stitch (or pick stitch, depending on who you ask). That means that when the thread is on the outside of the fabric, make the stitches absolutely tiny. That leaves less surface area to be abraided by the aforementioned slapping of your thighs. It also looks nicer - so I would do that if you’re fixing some really nice dress pants whether you’ve got a sewing machine or not. This is what a prick stitch looks like on the outside.
If you’re doing it by hand, and if you want extra reinforcement, I’d also recommend getting some Heat ‘n Bond (or Wonder Under, etc, there are a few different brands, any permanent iron-on adhesive will work) and affixing the patches with that first. I only didn’t do that because I don’t have any. I would not recommend putting the patches in ONLY with iron-on adhesive, even though the manufacturers say it will work. It’s not strong enough for your powerful thighs.
Now go. Stop buying pants. End the disposable fashion machine. The revolution starts with your ass.

We have this old purple fleece or felt (I have no clue what this thing is made of but I guarantee every middle class household in the 90s had one) blanket that we inherited from my mother in law when we moved into her house. It had some holes but it was still mostly together and it held no sentimental value so it was perfect for me to practice on.
I started doing a weaving type mend with some yarn I had laying around. This green yarn (Lion brand homespun) came in a lot I bought and the previous owner had cut it into short lengths (like 36”) for a project but had never finished. So it really wasn’t good for crochet but it was perfect to use for weaving.

I started with the green and then I was liking the earthy feel with the purple background so I just kept going with some crazy Pom Pom yarn I had a tiny bit of.
And that was looking like moss or fungi so I threw in some yellow.

Then threw in some brown to bring back the earthy feel.
I just kept going in different directions with different yarns until I had filled the hole. And I am so pleased with the result.

I adore the texture this Pom Pom yarn made. Sadly I don’t have any more and I can’t find it online to save my life.

On to another hole. Went for brown base threads (warp threads???) instead of the string I had been using. I have to get more pictures of how this one is turning out because I’m almost positive I’ve finished this hole but I put the blanket away for some reason.

These are some pictures of moss? lichen?? On a tree for inspo because this is what the weaving reminded me of.
