Oh, this is such a difficult--if not nearly impossible--choice. Both David and Michael were utterly brilliant in their respective roles, but in completely different ways.

Having seen both plays this year (albeit one of them on a screen instead of live), I have to consider each performance in the context of the production. Michael as Aneurin Bevan was the anchor of his play, the central performance around which all the other performances revolved, and a steady presence in the midst of an occasionally chaotic staging. David as Macbeth was a shining light at the center of a taut, intense ensemble in a play that was minimalist in design yet immaculately staged.

The one thing I can say with certainty is that neither production would be the same without their respective performances. Both of them elevated either the material they were given (Michael) or the performances of everyone around them (David). But putting them up against each other is really challenging because they are such wildly different characters and performances.

What I would really love is to see this end in a tie with David and Michael both winning, but I know that isn't likely to happen. But I also know that if one wins and the other doesn't, Michael will be the one celebrating David's win the loudest (and vice-versa). So in thinking of this particular award, I can only think to vote with my heart and feel reassured that Michael and David (and Cush!) are more than deserving of it, regardless of what happens.

The National Book Award’s jury doesn’t even have to worry about being overruled! It’s not like with the Pulitzers, where there’s a history of the general committee overruling jury picks they think are too out-there. Like in 1976, the general committee refused to give the award to Gravity’s Rainbow. They thought the book was too long, too obscure—that the jury was just having fun, picking something they liked, instead of something that was of interest to the general reader.

Similarly, in 2012, the exact same thing happened. The Pulitzer Prize three-member fiction jury offered up Karen Russell’s Swamplandia, Denis Johnson’s Train Dreams, and David Foster Wallace’s The Pale King. The fifteen-member general committee declined to give the award to any of these books, instead opting to give no award. They didn’t give a reason, but presumably they thought the books weren’t very good. It is a bit funny that whenever the Pulitzer Prize committee does choose to exercise its discretion, it does so in order to refuse recognition to authors who are actually good, like David Foster Wallace and Thomas Pynchon. I haven’t read The Pale King, but I’ve read most of his other work—it’s quite difficult, but it’s stuck with me and influenced me in a way most Pulitzer winners haven’t.

By the way, out of that trio of war novels I mentioned, the only one that came close to winning an award was Slaugherhouse Five, which was nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula awards in 1961. That mostly happened because sci-fi fans thought of Vonnegut as “one of us,” and we tend to be very chuffed when one of us writes a book that gets broader attention (Michael Chabon won the Nebula for The Yiddish Policeman’s Union for a similar reason). But still, it shows the value of having a naked popularity contest.

I think the things that offend me most nowadays in like, smaller interpersonal interactions rather than grand, sweeping trends in culture, are when people chose to not partake in a wide set of things. Like musical close mindedness, or refusal to try different foods from different cultures. Not watching an entire subset of films bc they’re ‘french’. Avoiding reading bc you say you have adhd and it’s too hard. Like dude I get it, I’m busy. I can be picky. Everyone can. But the willful ignorance of closing yourself off to those VAST portions of the human experience, and not having curiosity and a lust to learn and explore art that was made by someone worlds apart from you either in terms of their culture, era, whatever. I dunno man it just pisses me off so bad. I think it’s arrogant. Like oh you’re comfortable in your safe little bubble huh? And you’re enforcing its barriers with the excuse that you’re autistic and have sensory issues. With music made by black people?? lol okay. It is pretty presumptuous for me to assume malicious intent but I think those prejudices are borne from either the comfort of being someone who’s wealthy and probably white not feeling the need to learn past what they think is enough, or it’s a reflection of a society that’s taught you to prioritize what it shills— popular, current (white, depending where you live ig) artists who are making streamlined, easy to digest content. Often when I meet people with these issues they’ll have one particular ‘niche’, and it tends to be like. 70s music. Victorian literature. Anime and Japanese games. But they’re still not really investing beyond the media presented. Like there’s so much more to Japanese culture than liking some cartoons put out between 2010-2020. You don’t gotta become some sorta Einstein who learns the background of every little freak in FGO yeah. But don’t you wanna aim higher? Aren’t you interested in any of the historical figures? And nothings wrong with hopping onto a trend. You read Dracula bc of that Dracula daily thing. Cool! Read more. Some people will say they’re chronically ill or disabled and can’t get outside. That’s okay. The internet is full of things you can read other than fanfiction, YouTube has a shit ton of free music. There’s Wikipedia and free articles online if you have questions about things. Yeah nobody is spending four hours a day looking at the national archives website and studying art history but it’s imbued in the things around you, and youll absorb it ambiently as you go along. you dont have to be a jack of all trades and cover every major genre of every major medium, but it never hurts to try! I really love seeing ppl ask too. Bc it can be kind of humiliating to admit to what seems like some jackass hipster that you’ve never delved into, idk, Serbian films (lol not that one). Splatoon 3 is wild because imagine if you were living in Japan due to a recent economic and cultural boom, and suddenly a space shuttle with a mutant house-sized T-rex riding it suddenly burst from the center of Mt. Fuji and disappeared into space without explanation, and all you ever find out about what the fuck that was about is that Zuckerburg mysteriously disappeared the same day and was never seen again, but still "officially" ran Meta through an open secret Queen-Elizabeth-being-in-good-health gaslighting campaign, and everybody kind of suspected he may have been connected but never figured out anything conclusive.

Also the T-rex is now orbiting the earth in the fetal position like the guy from Jojo, and there are rumors of a substance that, if touched, turns you into a half-dinosaur monster. Nobody understands any of this but Meta employees just keep going to work and pretending Zuck still exists. The same 12 prerecorded voicelines constantly squak from the PA system.

Oddly, the statue in front of Meta HQ of a T-rex eating a human changes overnight into one of a giant human eating a tiny T-rex. Nobody noticed the switch, despite the statue being in a constantly bustling area. It happened shortly after the shuttle incident.

Jack Black's tiny clone, Lil' Jack, now wears a headset at all times and has been acting really shady since the incident. Also they're both hyperintelligent, immortal velociraptors found in an ancient cryogenic chamber who spend their days judging college football and eating the legally harvested flesh of hillbillies. Lil' Jack is probably plotting to kill Big Jack, but Big Jack doesn't seem to care, growing fat and lazy, sleeping on public benches in a bed of throw pillows. Also, he's very open about the fact that, as a velociraptor, humans look delicious, but he hasn't actually eaten anybody aside from the aforementioned hillbillies because he's civil.

Everyone is just expected to move on with their lives after this. This is normal to you.

The local art school was recently attacked by giant sea serpents, which were actually hideously bioengineered hillbillies, fulfilling a biblical doomsday prophecy, and they were driven back by Meta's army of minimum wage, part time child soldiers armed with warcrimey jury-rigged weaponry. The sea serpents had giant frying pans grafted into their mouths, which launched primitive tactical nukes made by filling garbage bags with their explosive blood. They still exist, and occasionally defend their comrades, but spend most of their time in the deep sea.

The local homeless emo twink everyone's attracted to is a closet millionaire who sells bootleg clothing in exchange for live rats, which he messily devours behind closed doors. He's also 8 feet tall and British and only has one eye.

North Korean refugees now flood the western world, after a greasy 14 year old hipster, under the guidance of Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift, beat Kim Jong Un in a mech battle, and the EDM remix of the Japanese national anthem they performed caused like half the soldiers to immediately realize North Korea sucks ass and defect. One of these individuals, 7 foot tall hypergenius, becomes a newscaster alongside a nepo baby rapper with dwarfism who likes to eat entire jars of mayo, and also they're a popular band. Also also, they may or may not be gay. Almost the entire population is gay, so this isn't a huge deal.

The new local newscasters are a famous Japanese lion tamer, an Indian girl with a bloodline trait allowing her to control snakes, and a Brazillian man the size of a smart car who exclusively communicates via grunts.

Gods, souls and zombies are objectively real, and you're effectively immortal because real-life respawning was invented a while ago. It works like a Keurig, but with mucus instead of coffee. Submersion in water kills you.

A good deal of the population is a hivemind. They pretend to be individuals for no reason.

There were a lot of fandom events yesterday and I feel late

Commentary during the preparation period: I wanted to write about this in a post, but I’m not sure it would be appropriate. Yesterday it completely shocked me. I was looking for references for that art with Michael that I told you about. This was a random search on Tumblr for the latest photos that needed to be carefully studied. And I saw a deeply unhappy, almost sick man! A man tired to the last degree, a man with tears in his eyes, with an artificial smile and sadness in his eyes. Maybe it was a bad period (a lot of work and communication with fans after a hard day) for the search, the worst of all. But now I have a big question for his partners: WTF??
