Poppy the Pygmy Hippo 🦛

The pygmy hippo is an endangered species native to the swamps and rivers of West Africa. Less than 2,500 mature individuals remain in the wild.

This birth – like all of Iris’ births – plays an important role in helping protect this rare and elusive species.

Unlike common hippos, pygmy hippos do not live in groups and are usually solitary or in pairs.

For this reason, once Iris’ two previous calves grew up, they were moved to other zoological facilities to live with future mates and continue contributing to the conservation of their species.

The Metro Richmond Zoo is the only place in Virginia where people can see hippos.

If “it’s cool, she only gets manhandled a little bit” makes you dismiss concerns about outdated handling then idk what to tell you.

Also being a visitor of a zoo does not give you ability to assess the welfare of zoo animals. I acknowledge that the habitat is not just that concrete area but it is still limited access to deep water, unnecessarily rough handling and very clearly done to put on a show for the gathered crowd.

1) Keeper encourages Moo Deng to bite him as if he’s a bitework handler offering a dog a bite sleeve (an adult Pygmy hippo has the bite force of approx 18,000lbs)

2) Keeper gets annoyed with Moo Deng trying to mouth at him and grabs her face, squeezing it with a grimace on his face while she backs up and tries to get away

3) Keeper tries to “bathe” Moo Deng (just give her access to clean water maybe???) by picking her up but she struggles and squirms in a panic, slipping from his hands and falling on her back.

This all happens while the crowd is gathered, the keeper does it deliberately. They want to see the cute hippo get mad - that’s why she went viral. Stressing a calf out for the sake of entertaining an audience is just so not okay.

So sure, if you want to use that post from a fan of the zoo as evidence that everything is fine, go ahead. But poor handling isn’t justified and manhandling a baby wild animal is not okay just because she has to put up with it for only an hour.

Not to be a killjoy (though it is what I do best) but the unsafe and rough handling of a baby Pygmy hippo in a pretty substandard Thai zoo being meme-ed into something funny and cute really shows just how much groupthink plays into public perception of animal welfare.

Moo Deng shows avoidance, threat displays and stress around her keepers that are constantly man-handling her, blasting her with a hose and harassing her. The enclosure is mostly concrete, which is horrible for her soft feet. There looks to be some substrate but there doesn’t seem to be any areas for wallowing or deep water wading.

There’s also very easy access of this hippo to the public with no places to hide. I’d love if someone could shed more light on the enclosures but from what I’ve seen it’s not great.

Also the free contact and forcing into tubs that the keepers do is only going to create an avoidant and potentially aggressive and dangerous Pygmy hippo.

But the public happily overlook that because she’s cute. It’s a similar attitude with seals too.

Stop rewarding bad husbandry with clout. Baby animals deserve agency and respect and to grow up without getting harassed and feeling the need to defend themselves constantly.

The former Gleaner narrowed his eyes and looked at the widely eager brown and pink eyes pointed down at him from the huge roegadyn. Frog looked earnest, but the problem was that she always seemed such, and therefore it was impossible to judge how much trouble would follow from such innocent requests.

“Why?” he replied, setting down his book beside his plate of tacos.

Frog immediately lit up with delight and sat opposite him, and, injury to insult, reached over and took a nacho from his plate. Aunt Tii always gave a plentiful heap of them but that wasn’t the point. “Well I was thinking, they must be something like hippos, right?”

He nodded, cautiously, very uncertain about that comparison when it came to anything more than superficial similarities of placid aquatic life for enormous grey beasts.

“And I spent a whole summer working for the Hippo Riders in Thavnair. It must be a similar sort of thing, and who knows what may come – if I spend a summer here working on the river, it could be a really interesting experience. Maybe I could even take back what I learn to Thavnair, because the jungles can flood and if they knew – ”

“Alright, you’ve made your point.” He sighed. Rubbed his forehead. “I don’t see any harm in it.”

“Oh, hooray! Thank you!”

“I should warn you, though. The riverboat punutiys are chosen to be very large – the skills you learned with the hippos will only go so far. And they don’t react well if you approach them armed.”

She was nodding eagerly, absorbing everything he said. Maybe she was a good student – wouldn’t she have to be to have learned as many disciplines as she boasted? Perhaps, and only perhaps, this wasn’t a terrible mistake.

“Anything else I should know?”

He shook his head and sighed. “I’ll make arrangements to get us a boat… Maybe a particularly docile punutiy.”

She nodded, took another nacho, and stood. “I’ll see you back here tomorrow, then!”

And with that the Warrior of Light strode away, and Erenville could already feel tomorrow morning’s headache creeping up on him.

- 99% he was the one that baked the cake, he really didnt have a choice other than to go with the walmart cake

- doting on everything, the cake has to be the perfect flavor, the invitations have to be in the right font so its not too fancy but its not too bland, the decorations need to be cheery but not too childish, the presents need to be spot on with whatever they like but not too spot on because stalking people is not cool, generally organized

- on that last note, he can and will stalk your social media accounts to find out what you like and how you like it, you'll suddenly see that "baguettedude420" is following your Facebook account and "winethief21" is viewing your instagram story (and accidentally liked a post from 2016 uh oh)

- going all out like its your last birthday

- doing his best, hes not good at remembering dates so he usually celebrates it WAYYY too early or after a week, you'll see a "happy birthday!!" message from him a month after your actual birthday

- gets "generally liked" gifts if he doesnt know what you like including: perfume, merch of a band you might like, jeans and socks (kaiser you have bad taste)

- will buy a pre-made cake because baking is not his thing

- will not sing happy birthday, nuh uh hes not putting you through that

Disco Kid

- going all out like this is his last day on earth, you cant get him to directly ask you "what do you want for ur birthday" because he'd rather cartwheel off a cliff than do that, doing mental gymnastics to find out what you would like for your birthday, "oh so you like sharks?" He then proceeds to get you shark themed gifts (if you have a hyperfixation on something really specific this is a win for you)

- goes out of his way to make, decorate & throw edible glitter at a cake for you

- definitely asking your friends "what does this bitch like??" (not that exact question but still close) since he doesnt have the guts to ask you what you like without making it obvious he wants to get you something specific

-oversinging happy birthday

King Hippo

- rushing on the last day, the only thing that saved him was the reminder on his phone

- also stalks your social media accounts because he didnt have the time to think about what hes gonna get you, uh oh looks like "theking5262627" is following your instagram account

- his gifts are mostly food related, like baking? Heres a whisk, like cooking? Heres a apron & a pan, like fruit? Enjoy this Apple shaped mug

- bakes a gorgeous cake, if you dont like how it tastes he'll be heartbroken, so for now you'll have to suffer through the blueberry allergy or he'll be sad

Piston Hondo

- overdoing everything like Joe, this time its not limited to asking your friends & stalking your social media accounts, hes gonna contact your family & ask your siblings and parents like "i know that you dont know me but your childs birthday is coming up what do they like pls tell me im gonna get them a gift" and it usually ends in hondo being friends with your parents, hes gonna whip out the oujia board to contact your deceased relatives to ask what kind of cake you like, hes gonna to swim in your gene pool to find out what your favorite color is, hes gonna get info, one way or another

- He thinks more about your birthday than you do, planning this like his life depends on it

-makes sure the decorations fit your taste because nothings worse than a badly decorated birthday (other than a family argument ending in both sides cutting contact but my point stands)

- makes it obvious hes planning it, you could say something like "i think green is a really good color" And he would just start overthinking it like "so you like green??? Do you also like plants?? Nature??? Mint??"

Great Tiger

- He already knows what you want, what flavor of cake (or any other desert) you want since he stalked your social media accounts WAYYYY before this, what on earth made you think "thegreatestman11" was a normal account

- dont let him sing happy birthday (PLEASE) or he'll perform a entire choreography (am i spelling that correctly)

- baking and putting his soul into it, theres sweat, blood and tears in that cake (not in the literal sense hes not that nasty) but he did see the light halfway through decorating the cake

World Hippo Day on February 15 celebrates the extraordinary hippopotamus and encourages people to take action to prevent its extinction. Did you know that before 1909, scientists placed hippos in the same group as pigs? Despite their outward similarities with pigs or wild boars, hippopotamuses are closely related to whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Hippos are semiaquatic mammals that are native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are herbivores and can weigh up to 2,000kg, making them the third-largest land mammal after elephants and rhinos. Hippos are primarily found in rivers, lakes, and mangrove swamps.

I have good internet this morning a fellow volunteer ha some magical device I am linked into. Hooray! It is router 4G by Huawe. Who knew? This can be used world wide by simply changing the sim card to the area in which you are.

It is Saturday, a day of rest for me. Wednesdays and Fridays are very long days in that we leave for Naboisho Consrvancy at 6:30 AM and drive all day there. We have a packed breakfast and lunch that we eat picnic style in a gorgeous spot. Actually it is all gorgeous. The fist time we did that we got back at 7 PM. the last couple of times it has been 5:30 PM which is better. I still find my body sort of rocking and swaying as if to the motion of the land cruiser until I finally go to bed.

The facilities here are pristine, and we are treated like royalty. Every evening after dinner when it is dark we are escorted to our tents by a guard with his shuka over his shoulders, his spear in hand and a machete attached to his waist. He has a strong flashlight to sweep the path as we walk home looking out for any dangerous animals. During the day we have seen warthogs by our tent and giraffe. There are elephants, hyena, and baboons near. As our guide escorted us to dinner last night he pointed out a hyena cry near by.

Here are some photos of the tent Joanne and I are staying in. very modern, semipermanent tent with shower, toilet, and sink. Such luxury. I did love our last two years in Naboisho Conservancy rather primitive accommodation better. Weird right? But I loved the ruggedness of it, the Out of Arica feeling!

Picnic breakfast, elephants come near the vehicles, A dik dik, the full moon, and Hippo family at Rocky Crossing. we have renamed it Stinky crossing due to the hippo poo in the water.

Lionesses, dung beetle with dung, Hyena babies, and a tower of giraffe.

And yes, the animals are that close.

One more thing. as the days go by, I learn more about the animals. A new little fact I observed is that the dik dik, the tiniest antelope standing about 20 inches high, buries its dung! I watched one pawing at the earth then turning around and inspecting is work then defecating in it. He/she then carefully pawed earth over the feces. Dik dik mate for life. they are very secretive and hide in the bush so it is hard to get a good photo of them.

Hooray! One squishy hippo patch made and ready to go on the jacket

Just finished coding my new patch design based on my treasured plushie. I dont want any of the plushies to think they arent loved but they all know who the OG prince of plushies is in this kingdom.

I cant wait to see how the print comes out. This one will be my first freestanding patch (vs embroidered directly onto an item). When its finished Im putting him on my new pleather (:/) jacket i got as a gift recently.
