It has a happy ending, but I couldn't get through this without a box of tissues. If you want the emotions dialed up even more, listen to the podfic version with music
ius in bello by Lise (T, 2k, JC & JYL & WWX, Canon Divergence, Tearjerker, Sad Ending, Heavy Angst, Grief/Mourning, Originally Posted on Tumblr, Not A Fix-It, POV JC, [Podfic] ius in bello by flamingwell) WWX doesn't survive Qiongqi Path, told from Jiang Cheng's perspective

3. ITMF any fics where there is a focus or moment where wwx knows lwj can and will spoil the hell out of him and give him money for anything. kind of like the "it's not my money anyway" moment in the drama. preferably set in canon time period, but won't say no to a modern au if it has a good plot! thank you!!
~*~
4. I was wondering if anyone was aware of any fics that are dark!LWJ but the relationship between him and WWX isn't toxic or dubcon? Something like a mafia, a/b/o, or emperor au, but without the more non-con like elements that are often found in those fics. I would love to read more dark!LWJ, but the tag is full of the more toxic stuff that I personally can't handle (no judgement here, I wish I could lol), so any help is much appreciated! (ITMF ask)

~*~
5. itmf deaf or hoh wei wuxian please
misunderstood 'verse by sysrae (M, 7k, WangXian, Modern, College/University, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, getting hit by cars, Past Child Abuse, Friends to Lovers, Abusive YZY, Caring LWJ, Injured WWX, partial hearing loss, the real OTP is everyone x therapy)
~*~
6. ITMF fics where Lan Zhan and/or Wei Ying smoke/get high (not drunk) can be weed or harder drugs, also okay if it's just Lan Zhan feeding Wei Ying drugs. @thehappyyellow
a constant satellite of your blazing sun (i obey your law of gravity) by Ariaste (M, 26k, JGY/LXC, WangXian, JGY & WWx, Madam LAN/QHJ, Modern, Slice of Life, Established Relationship, Family Drama, Flashbacks, HOAverse, Marijuana, Nice Lan Boys Marry Gremlins, (bass boosted) NICE LAN BOYS MARRY GREMLINS, OC(s), (sort of), OC Death(s), (but like it's already in canon so you know about it already)) this is part of the HOA series, but does feature wwx and lwj (among others) getting high. Not entirely sure if it can be read as a standalone, but the entire series is hilarious and absolutely worth checking out.
2am on a saturday by detectorist (E, 11k, WangXian, Modern AU, College/University, Recreational Drug Use, (no sex happens while drunk/high!), Humour, Pining, Getting Together, Blow Jobs, it's about the yearning, somehow a harmonica gets involved, the lz/mm/jzx best friends agenda)
~*~
7. Itmf the juniors being protective of WWX?
Rotten Work by ShanaStoryteller (Not Rated, 63k, WangXian, WWX & JL, Post-Canon, Protective WWX, Protective JL, Yunmeng Bros Reconciliation, Reluctant Matchmaker JL)
🔒 The Absolutely True Story of the Yiling Patriarch: A Manifesto in Many Parts by aubreyli (T, 19k, WangXian, In-Universe RPF, Romance Novel, LJY’s sense of justice, OYZZ’s sense of romance, Featuring a surprise appearance by WWX’s oft-absent sense of shame, Look the ducklings just want their sort-of dads to be happy okay?, And it’s not like WWX or LWJ are doing a good job of ensuring their own happiness, LJY rejects canon reality and substitutes his own, highly relatable actually, Post-Canon Fix-It, primarily drama-canon with cameos from novel-canon, Podfic Available, Russian Translation Available)
🧡 the stone-filled sea by yukla (T, 9k, WangXian, LSZ & WWX, Post-Canon, senior wei defense squad, a study of the way prejudice and injustice and anger trickle down from generation to generation)
bespoke by cafecliche (G, 3k, WangXian, Post-Canon, Fluff, LSZ is a very good boy, which is specifically a tag for the fic but also just true in general, mostly novel-compliant but could easily be CQL-compliant too)
~*~
8. hello! for the next itmf, i would love to see fics where wwx does empathy with lxc and/or lqr and find out how mistreated he is. could be during his youth or post-sunshot, either one. thank you!
And Time Is But a Paper Moon by sami (M, 139k, WangXian, XiChengQing, Time Travel, Fix-It, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Healing, Mental Health Issues, PTSD, Hurt/Comfort, Depression, BAMF WWX, BAMF JC, BAMF LWJ, BAMF JYL, Getting Together) I'm not sure if these are quite what the requester was looking for but Lan Xichen uses Empathy (and is traumatized by it) to see a past timeline
❤️ All will be well when the day is done by abCEE (T, 76k, LQR & WWX, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Fix It, Not Jiang Family Friendly, JFM & YZY Bashing, YZY Bashing, Definitely not YZY centric, Fix it for our main characters, Time Travel, Butterfly Effect, Madam Lan Lives, No Sunshot Campaign, Artistic License, Unreliable Narrator, JC Bashing, non-yunmeng WWX, Accidental Baby Acquisition, Good Uncle LQR, OOC, WangXian Get a Happy Ending, WWX gets the love and care that he deserves from the very beginning, Mainly CQL but has elements of the novel as well, WWX Isn’t Adopted by the Jiangs, verbal and physical (c/o Zidian) abuse from YZY) and Lan Qiren uses Empathy to learn who a sick child Wei Ying is and learns about Wei Ying's abuse in his past timeline
Rise of the Divine Oracle by BlakSalt (T, 291k, WangXian, Boy Love, Hurt/Comfort, Romance)
~*~
9. Does anyone have any Sizhui-centric fics where he learns about or pieces together his past with wwx and the wens before wwx comes back? 🥺 Like 'Would You Come Home?' By s6115, that was so good I need more fics with that concept. 😭 Please and thank you 🙏
~*~
10. Hi I wondering if you knew any fics similar to: A Corpse Called by Name by jaemyun👀 thank you so much for your hard work?
~*~
11. rogue cultivator wangji PLEASE
doesnt matter if its like post wwx's death or before the cloud recesses study arc i just have a NEED for rogue cultivator lwj if no one can find any i'll just write it myself i swear
🔒 And Miles To Go Before I Sleep by Glitterbombshell (T, 23k, WangXian, JC & LWJ, LSZ & LWJ, LXC & LWJ, Heavy Angst with a Happy Ending, LXC is not really a good brother in this sorry, Canon Divergence, rogue cultivator LWJ) This one is good & has an interesting impetus for LWJ leaving (the Jin find out LSZ is a Wen) but sadly hasn't been updated in almost 4 years. BTW please write a rogue cultivator!LWJ fic - this is an insanely underutilised trope considering the obvious story potential
~*~
12. Hey! I’m in the mood for any and all fic where Lan Zhan marries into the Jiang sect with Wèi Ying. Thanks! @shapeshifters-anon
The Fire Lapping Up the Creek by notevenyou (E, 66k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Canon-Typical Violence, Injury, Injury Recovery, Blood, Respiratory Illness, Major Illness, Fever, Grief/Mourning, Burial Mounds, Angst with a Happy Ending, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Hunger and food scarcity, Surgery, Fix-It of Sorts)
~*~
13. Hey, I'm looking for (and really need) a good story where WWX has had enough and just becomes a villain (+100 to interest if he goes back in time and is evil from the beginning) (+10 if WWX is a genius and uses his inventions to manipulating, getting what he wants and/or establishing his position so that no one can hurt or take advantage of him).
e.g. after destroying his new home and killing all the Wen, WWX destroys the seal and goes back in time, but instead of trying to fix everything and make it better he says "f*ck it" and simply stops being a good boy. He will be the same as the rest of the world... or something like that :)
Just... WWX as a villain <3 @ethealia
~*~
14. Hello! I am looking for fics where Meng Yao / Jin Guangyao is wholly nice and good (and not secretly scheming and villainous and such). Any au or era, I just want to see him happy and safe and supported by friends. Thank you so much!
what builds a home by Stratisphyre (T, 45k, WangXian, MY & WWX, Canon Divergence, Adopted WWX, POV Multiple, warning for JGS behaving exactly as expected, child endangerment, Brother Feels, Minor Character Death, [Podfic] Cold read of "what builds a home" by Stratisphyre by KeriArentikaiPods (KeriArentikai))
Debts of a Child Part 2 by Hauntcats (M, 111k, WangXian, YZY Bashing, Not Jiang Family Friendly, Angst and Feels, lots of anger, JC Bashing, not Jiang friendly, Angst with a Happy Ending, Content warning for icky spiders in later chapters., hurt no comfort for Jiang siblings.)
a micro utopia born as the overture plays by tardigradeschool (T, 18k, wangxian, JGY/LXC, fix-it)
Meng Yao vs. the Board of the Homeowner's Association Series by Ariaste (M/T, 119k, WIP, XiYao, WangXian, Modern AU, Established Relationship, xiyao and wangxian are both already married, Family Feels, Domestic Fluff, Family Bonding, Slice of Life, Discussions of Past Trauma, wwx's canonical kinks, HOAverse)
结局难更改 (the ending is hard to change) Series by PorcupineGirl (G, 50k, WangXian, Time Travel, Modern with Magic, Modern Cultivators AU, Canon Divergence, Time Traveler WWX, discussion of canonical character deaths, conveniently localized fires, Discussion of Canonical Suicide Attempt, mostly happy but slightly bittersweet ending, Reincarnation, LWJ POV, Established Relationship, Aromantic JC) Not JGY centric, though.
Peony to Lotus series by Deriliarch (T, 65k, JYL/JGY, wangxian, canon divergence, arranged marriage, demisexual character, demiromantic character, fix-it, slice of life, angst)
~*~
15. ITMF Jiang disciples trying to actually get Wei Wuxian out of the Jiang sect or keep him safe from the main Jiang family for his own safety
Just go forward like you mean it by tawaen (M, 101k, WangXian, WWX & WN &WQ, WWX & JYL, NHS & WWX, Canon Divergence, WWx does not attend the Wen indoctrination, WWX saves Lotus Pier, Inventor WWX, No Golden Core Transfer, Sect Leader JYL, JC Has No Golden Core, Bad Parents JFM & YZY, Not JC Friendly, but he gets a happier ending than canon so don't look here for bashing) There's a small scene where WWX decides to leave & a disciple helps him sneak away
Dispersing Clouds by dreamingofcake (E, 283k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Genius WWX, Inventor WWX, Not Jiang Family Friendly, Abusive YZY, Canonical Child Abuse, Hurt/Comfort, Slow Burn, Eventual Sex, Implied/Referenced Self-Harm (Background Character), Background Character Deaths, child deaths, Canon JC, Good Uncle LQR, Accidental Baby Acquisition, Cultivation Sect Politics, Homophobia, Heteronormativity, Feelings Realization, WWX is Not Oblivious) This might count? WWX leaves the clan himself, but there's a scene later in the fic where JFM & YZY are on trial & the Jiang disciples rebel & testify against them over WWX's treatment
~*~
16. May I ask an ITMF for wwx having a pet/befriending/encountered avians like cranes, songbirds, crows, etc. please? I read a fic where wwx has an army of mischievous ravens and I'd like more recommendations if you have any!
A Long Road by Vathara (T, 187k, WangXian, Fluff and Angst, Crossovers & Fandom Fusions, Scheming NHS, Necromancy, Fire, Ghosts, Accidental Child Acquisition, is it an accident if the ghosts keep bringing them?)
We Meet at the Thousandth Step by Admiranda, Rynne (T, 316k, WangXian, CSSR/WCZ, Canon Divergence, No Sunshot Campaign, CSSR & WCZ Live, Rogue Cultivator WWX, Different First Meeting, Night Hunts, Genius WWX, Inventor WWX, Plot, Romance, Drama, Fluff, Strangers to married, Unresolved Sexual Tension, Unresolved Romantic Tension, Everyone Lives, Developing Relationship, Minor Violence, Case Fic, Mystery, Flirting, WWX’s Canon-Typical Flower Flirting, Arson, There Was Only One Bed, Getting Together, First Kiss, Meeting the Parents, Resolved Sexual Tension, Resolved Romantic Tension, WWX Is a Good Big Brother, New Relationship Bliss, Chinese Mythology & Folklore, Blood and Injury, Yiling siblings, Married WangXian, Honeymoon, Wangxian’s Baby Fever) Wei Ying and Lan Zhan befriend and save a Zhenniao (a mythical bird) in chapters 41-44
~*~
17. ITMF fics where Wei Wuxian is the Yiling Laozu but, like, he is established as such prior to or external to the events of canon? As in, WWX isn’t raised in Yunmeng and he doesn’t do the canon Gusu Lectures arc or Wen Indoctrination arc and such, instead he is already in Burial Mounds with a scary reputation. Usually this plot crops up in arranged marriage or war prize aus where Lan Wangji is given to the big bad Yiling Laozu to gain favor, kind of like in 山水盆景 (Shānshuǐ Pénjǐng) by meicairoubingfan where the Yiling Laozu is an immortal who the sects appeal to to intervene in the Sunshot Campaign conflict. Does this description make sense? Thank you!
what price is duty, what cost is love by thunderwear (G, 18k, wangxian, canon divergence, WWX was never adopted to Jiang, war prize, YLLZ WWX, pining, first kiss, first time, falling in love, angst w/ happy ending)
💖🔒 love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, YLLZ WWX, Arranged Marriage, political scheming, Gratuitous Domesticity, Mutual Pining, EXTREME SLOWBURN, the inherent eroticism of the forehead ribbon, The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known, neither wwx nor lwj want to be Perceived, but sorry kids! it’s gonna happen!, rated E but the the NSFW stuff doesn’t begin until chapter 19!, bottom LWJ in chapter 20 and 27)
Old Foreshadows by protos_metazu_ison (M, 15k, WangXian, YLLZ WWX, BAMF WWX, War, Universe Alteration, Sunshot Campaign, Rated For Violence, Timeline What Timeline, Mojo's post)
🔒Fated Series by LtLJ (G, 31k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Arranged Marriage, Post-Apocalypse, Magical Apocalypse, Hurt/Comfort, Happy Ending, Canon Diverted via Volcano, YLLZ WWX, Badass LWJ)
🔒hold me fast, fear me not by cicer (M, 16k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Fairy Tale Elements, Ballad 39: Tam Lin, Mpreg, Bottom LWJ/Top WWX, YLLZ WWX, brief reference to abortificants, Implied/Referenced Dubious Consent, may be interpreted as noncon by some)
~*~

Note
jgy and/or lxc 👀
oh babe we’re going to be getting into it bc these two give me so many brainworms.
jgy first!
a song that reminds me of them: everybody wants to rule the world - tears for fears
what they smell like: fresh and pleasant, not overpowering, maybe a hint of floral oils
an otp: xiyao for sure but i’m also deep in chengyao hell
a notp: nieyao and 3zun does nothing for me. I don’t hate it, I’m just deeply ambivalent about it.
favorite platonic/familial relationships: this is a tough call between meng shi and jin ling. I also think these are the two relationships in his life where his feelings are (relatively) uncomplicated. I’m particularly tickled by how much he likes to spoil Jin Ling because he never got to be spoiled like that as a kid.
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: oh there are so many. so so so many wildly bad takes about jgy that i’m just going to lump them into one category i call “Someone Gave Sect Leader Yao Internet Access”. Basically i dislike headcanons that tend to attribute a lot more awful stuff to his Schemes, or speculate on there being more malice to his motivations than was actually there. It flattens the character into a two-dimensional villain, and removes a great deal of ambiguity around his actions and motives.
the position they sleep in:  on his back like a proper gentleman! (but if he’s alone he’s curled up like a kitten)
a crossover au i’d love to see them in: a song of ice and fire, don’t @ me he’d get so far. but honestly there are just. so many.
my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn: that little number with the baby blue outer robe i see what’s happening there >:3c
now for lxc:
a song that reminds me of them: life on mars - david bowie look it’s like one of the few i have with lyrics almost all of his playlist is instrumentals and melancholy women on pianos
what they smell like: fresh and crisp, like newly fallen snow
an otp: xiyao
a notp: literally anything else involving him, but xisang turns my stomach. Xicheng just grates on my nerves because it’s popularity is so bizarre to me.
favorite platonic/familial relationships: oh his relationship with wangji for sure. for all i harp on wangji for not even like, checking on xichen after Guanyin Temple, i think they have one of the most loving relationships in the series. i also really enjoy his relationship with Lan Qiren, and his Very Complicated Feelings about his parents. I also have a lot of thoughts about how he feels towards nhs pre and post Guanyin Temple.
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: save me from himbo!xichen headcanons, christ on a fucking bike, nothing makes me want to chew glass more. i also really don’t like headcanons that tend to diminish his closeness with either jgy or wangji. i don’t dismiss dark!xichen headcanons out of hand, but there’s only a few i actually vibe with.
the position they sleep in: he starts on his back but i think he rolls over on to his side in his sleep and cuddles his blankets.
a crossover au i’d love to see them in: dark!xichen au in the hellraiser universe /grabbyhands
my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn: the dark blue number when he and jgy eyefucked right in front of nmj and his salad.
Bonus Xiyao:
a song that reminds me of them: last snowfall - vienna teng
what they smell like: each other :3c
an otp: them
a notp: anyone else.
favorite platonic/familial relationships: all the salads they eyefuck in front of, they are in the running for most people annoyed by their nonsense
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: that jgy and xichen don’t love each other. the drama and the donghua beg to differ - the xiyao agenda is real
the position they sleep in: wrapped lovingly in each other’s arms until xichen gets too hot and then it’s him on top of the blankets with jgy bundled up and using his enormous Lan Naturals as a pillow.
a crossover au i’d love to see them in: beauty and the beast au bc i’m predictable af
my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn: their wedding attire, shut up they’re married and Fine.

Cor’s Definitive MDZS/CQL Fanfiction Recommendation Page
Hi and welcome!
About me: I'm white and can only speak English, so while I’ve read a some analysis and done some research, I know my perspective is limited and I apologize in advance for any mistakes or misinterpretations.
I'm primarily a cql fan, though I did enjoy the donghua. I read the ExR novel translation several years ago and I have a complicated relationship with it, enjoying the explicit character development, humor, worldbuilding, originality, and some romantic scenes, while disliking how homophobia and sexual assault are handled as well as some structural elements. I have no familiarity with the audio drama or mdzs q show. I like tgcf, but the fics here are only for cql/mdzs.
About the fics: Any version of canon, though I prefer cql characterizations. Mostly wangxian, with a handful of other background relationships and some character studies. My favorite characters are wwx, lwj, jyl, wen ning, and jin ling, but lwj has a very special place in my heart. I enjoy jc as a character but find it hard to find fics that write him in a way I agree with. I prefer shorter works.
18+ rec list. Explicit works can be in any category.
I try to include content warnings on fics, depending on how well I remember. Please always defer to the tags and the author notes.
Works with be starred once for faves, and twice for ultimate faves.
Fics recommended in the first 5 sections of this list are guaranteed NOT to have the following
pedophilia/csa, teacher/student relationship, sexual ageplay, explicit works involving the juniors, or any couple with a significant age gap
incest, including wwx with jc, lsz with ljy, and jin ling with lsz. the canon qin su and jgy incest may be mentioned, but I find that comes up rarely
romanticized rape, including everything under the umbrella of noncon, dubcon, fuck or die, sex pollen, sex curses, drunk sex scenes, warprize, nonconsensual somnophilia, necrophilia, etc
note on novel ‘canonical kinks’ - a couple of fics do reference rape fantasy/cnc but they’re few and far between, and only in a few fics will there be any actual scenes of it
abusive or 'dark' wwx or lwj (or anyone not already abusive)
lxc/jgy, 3zun, or xy/xxc unless it’s treated critically. some fics may mention it but none will have scenes of them in a relationship
fics feminizing wwx - some gray area here, but if it's really bad I put it in section 6
genderbends/cisswaps
A/B/O
cop AUs
harry potter crossovers
Section 6 is reserved for fics with one of more of these issues (mostly background 3zun, some weirdness w the sex scenes, or hinted jl/lzs) , but none will have csa or sibling incest.
A note on authors: Vetted to an extent, based on tags for mdzs and cql works only. Anything above is listed in ‘author issues’ section. Current as of early 2023. There should be nobody on here who’s written csa or adult/child smut, so please let me know if you find something I’ve missed.
I haven’t reread all works on this list recently and I may have overlooked something about them. I welcome any corrections.
With no further ado, let’s get to the fanfiction!
The list is split into sections and then categories by theme. The fics are otherwise not listed in any particular order.
Section One: The heart of it all
I. The name of the song: that sweet sweet postcanon getting-together content II. To be in the world again: wei wuxian (or others), relearning how to live III. From then on, he was unable to look away again: postcanon wangxian
Section Two: Snapshots
IV. So this first love was all for you: anything short and sweet! V. If I was doomed to death: angsty flashback-era fics VI. Now try saying something true and beautiful: explicit works that make a point using sex or sex scenes
Section Three: Character
VII. A-xian is my didi: on jiang yanli VIII. I still am: oh, lan wangji IX.  Let’s be brothers again: jiang cheng, you clown
Section Four: Possibilities
X. Wicked tricks and beyond: modern with magic AUs XI: In another life: modern AUs - no magic XII. Things that might have been: canon divergences/retellings. (includes works with pre-ep50 getting togethers)
Section Five: Others
XIII. The little ones: works focused on the children XIV. Well well well what have we here: an exploration of other side characters XV: Shenanigans: COMEDY. boy do I love a laugh
Section Six: Lower your standards
XVI: Just a bit eh: fics that are fine, but that I didn’t like enough to rec in the sections above XVII: Put on some horse blinders: fics for which I have to list particularly egregious author issues (rape porn, incest) XVIII: The shame corner for naughty fanfiction: fics with issues within the actual work (again, mostly minor)
Section Seven: The Dumpster Fire
Fics that are so bad I’m posting them for the sole purpose of mocking them and/or complaining about them
bonus: some misc treats
includes interviews, poetry, meta, and writing resources
this concludes my rec list! feel free to send me an ask about anything you found on here. thanks for reading! be well, stay safe, and have fun out there :)

The Transmigrator Alpha's Lovely Little Omega is the Protagonist?!
by tangerinni Lan Xichen felt sick to the bottom of his stomach, utterly revolted at the thought of what could have happened if he hadn’t gotten a moment of clarity right on time. He was sure that the last thing he had seen were the bright lights of a car’s headlights as he lay on the street, blood coating his fingers and pooling around him. However, he couldn’t afford to be confused. Now that his brain had cleared up somewhat, he was beginning to realize why the name “Xichen” had sounded so familiar to him. He had transmigrated! Into one of his didi’s secret omegaverse novels no less! [Xiyao one-shot - NSFW - tw: blood / tw:body horror (to be on the safe side)]
[Masterpost]
--
He is hungry.
His body is broken and battered, stabbed clean through, and all Meng Yao can think of is how much he yearns to fill it. The gaps in himself, the holes, the spaces, the emptiness. His hunger is a deep-rooted tearing thing, ripping him to shreds from the inside out. He’s a husk, an empty hull waiting to be filled.
He is hungry.
His lover is a banquet. ‘Lover’ is perhaps too gentle of a word, but it begins to convey some sense of the desperate need for him. His feast, his fountain, his sacrificial offering. He’s meat and drink, Meng Yao bites into his chest until the wet tang of iron blooms hot and thick on his tongue. He dips between his legs and takes him into his mouth, swallows and sucks and wrings him dry at every opportunity - and they are numerous. Meng Yao sinks down onto him and lets him fill him, cock in his body, fingers in his mouth, he lets Lan Xichen pin him down and fuck him until he passes out and it’s not enough, not enough.
He would never bite the hands that feed him, that stuff him full enough to make him believe for a moment that he’s no longer starving. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t inflict pains. He bites and he scratches and he plants himself in the bloody furrows until flowering moans reward his violent care, until pleasure bursts sun-warmed and sweet between them, berries ripe for the picking. He stains his mouth red with them, his fingers purple with the bruises he paints so delicately on his devotee’s body.
If Meng Yao is being clawed to a slow torturous death from within, then it stands to reason that his other half will be ripped to shreds from without. He keeps his nails sharp and his teeth bared to tear into his flesh and drink sweetly of the vintage he offers - sweat, spend, blood, saliva when their mouths meet for crushing kisses. All of it is his to consume. He puts his mouth to the feast of Lan Xichen’s body and eats until the hunger pangs are satiated, drinks until he feels dizzy with it.
No wine, no ale, no sweet fall of rain will slake. He can only accept the sharp bitterness of come in his throat. Can only yearn for the drips of thick blood onto his tongue.
Lan Xichen can heal himself. Meng Yao can bite his lip until sweet hot blood drips thick and syrupy into his waiting mouth. It will be healed by morning. The swelling will disappear, the injury forgotten. For now Meng Yao can press his lips to the wound and suck, demand more, beg in broken pleas for Lan Xichen to fill him again.
Months after their last meal together he finds himself still so hungry.
In the golden cage of his new rooms he ties his lover to the bed with the luxury of red silk ropes, strips him bare with the delicate drag of a knife through his finery. He doesn’t ruin it - such garments surely cost enough to feed him (the mundane sort of food he eats to survive) for a month, perhaps more. But he cuts the ties, severs them until they’re nothing more than misplaced scraps, useless strings that no longer keep him from what he craves.
He drags the tip of his knife along the hard cock in his lover’s trousers, root to tip, and watches his eyes go dark, nothing but black as his lips part around a moan. Jin Guangyao takes it greedily into his mouth, honeyed candy melting into the slick heat of his tongue as he holds the knife poised just so over his feast’s belly, ready to be carved into, consumed. His appetite has been whetted now and it grows harder and harder to keep it at bay.
He doesn’t even so much as nick the skin with something so impersonal as a knife, but its presence is thrilling, a possibility, a maybe. But when he climbs on top of his prize he digs his hands in and takes what he wants by the greedy fistful.
Over and over he eats, he sinks down onto hand or cock or face and lets his lover press pieces of himself inside him. The dexterous spread of his fingers, the thick blunt stretch of his cock, the plush tongue that fills his mouth just as eagerly in other circumstances. He grinds down onto whatever he’s given and tries to force it deeper, always deeper, it’s never enough he’s still hollow under his ribs, he’s nothing inside the shell of his skin.
Lan Xichen has so much to give as he’s clawed away piece by piece. The meat of his thigh, his ass, the unending supply of spend from his cock, the sweat in the crooks of his thighs and under his arms, the searing glide of his tongue, sharp pain of his teeth. Jin Guangyao could eat and eat and eat forever and his lover will replenish himself for him, heal and return for more, offer himself up for the taking at every possible opportunity.
It’s not enough.
He needs him more. Always more, more, more. He scratches into his chest as if to claw out his beating heart and take a bite, he licks the blood away, watches more of it bead up for his tongue again. So generous with his body, his lover is, and patient. He doesn’t even jump when sharp teeth break the delicate skin of his neck, his wrist, his thigh, he only moans and begs to be consumed, to fill him again and again.
Smears of crimson and soft lavender follow his ravenous mouth, blood and bruises sucked to the surface of milk-pale skin. The insides of his lover’s thighs are tender and sweet against his tongue and he takes and takes and takes until he’s fed as soon as his lips wrap around the red, wet head of his cock. He sucks him down anyway, the restraints around his lover’s wrists and ankles stilling his thrashing as he’s pushed past the point of pleasure into the exquisite pain of overstimulation - and Jin Guangyao still takes more. The silken soft weight of him in his throat, on his tongue, between his teeth makes him feel slightly less empty.
His hands press into the flesh of his hips, crack through to bone, to sinew, to hot sticky strings of blood that drip from his fingertips whenever he lifts them as he swallows around him again and again and again, devouring, craving, demanding everything that his devotee can give to him.
“A-Yao,” his swollen bloodied lips turn the moan pained, exhilarated. “A-Yao please.”
Pleas for relief are useless, they both know this. Jin Guangyao will take until he’s satisfied, Lan Xichen will provide. But then, the word he wants to hear - “More, A-Yao, more.”
His feast is so good to him. Never once asking to stop. To be shown mercy. It’s always more, more, please, let me fill you, A-Yao. The hands that feed him are generous indeed, and so Jin Guangyao reaches up, flicks the knife through the ropes around one wrist to slice it free, and then there are fingers scratching his back, trying to hitch him higher. He knows what Lan Xichen wants and he’s willing to humor him now so he goes, wrapping his starving mouth around a nipple instead so that he can arch into the lithe fingers that find their home stuffed in his entrance.
He’ll never be full. The world has left him a hollow shell of greedy desire, perpetually famished, parched, but there are moments when his lover’s gifts are numerous enough to pretend.
He gentles his mouth until he’s suckling and kissing, he lets the fire retreat low in his belly to leave his mind clear. He spreads his legs to let Lan Xichen slide a third finger inside of him, a fourth, and he moans sweetly for him as if in apology for the growling and snapping of his hollowed out anguish.
“Mmmm there you are,” Lan Xichen hums through his kiss-bitten lips pressed into his hair. “A-Yao, my A-Yao,” he purrs as he prods his fingers deeper, stretches him wide around them until it burns as hot as the greed in his veins. “You’ve ripped me apart again, my heart.”
Jin Guangyao retreats to sit up - grind further onto those fingers - and survey the damage.
Bloodied scratches down his chest. Bruises in the shape of his mouth everywhere they could conceivably be littered. Impressions of his teeth everywhere his muscles curve - biceps, shoulders, chest, hips. Half-moon punctures in his hips weeping crimson pearls. Sweat shining on his skin, breath heaving in his chest.
Raw adoration in his eyes.
“Am I enough for you?” Lan Xichen asks with a vicious twist of his wrist to slam harder inside him, to jerk his body hard and fast. “Am I enough yet, A-Yao?”
“No,” he gasps, as he always does. “I need you again. Just once more, A-Huan, one more.”
It’s always one more. One more bite, one more scratch, one more lick, one more fuck, one more day, week, month, year. One more lifetime to try to satiate themselves.
One more eternity.
“Good,” Lan Xichen purrs - and then he jerks his still-bound wrist hard enough to snap the rope and he’s pinning Jin Guangyao down to attempt to fill him up for good once more.
Always once more.

Hi lovely person! I hope all is well ❤️ Im back again sliding into your DMs lol 😆 I have another question for you: do you believe LXC had been ignorant of “MXY” true identity this whole time before the incident at JGY chamber and Suibian was unsealed? Do you believe he had any suspicions that it was WWX? I mean, it was kinda hinted right simply based on how close his brother was to this man he probably had never seen before? Even Jin Ling had his suspicions from the jump (but that could be bc he knew the real MXY I guess? idk). Thank you in advance! 🙏🏽 ☺️
Thank you kind anon! Unfortunately I am currently dealing with a broken wrist, but I am making things work as I can.
I do actually think that Lan Xichen was caught off guard by the reveal. Wei Wuxian may not be the most subtle about hiding his actual personality, but Lan Xichen and the rest of the cultivation world had pretty much forgotten what Wei Wuxian's personality actually was. That and the way he came back was an old ritual that no one knew Mo Xuanyu had access to until Wei Wuxian found it in Jinlintai.
I think what he was hoping for was that his brother was moving on to someone new and had chalked up similarities to his brother having a type. Lan Xichen definitely tends to have blind spots and while he will address them when they smack him in the face, he won't look for them before then. That being said I think he does understand why they wouldn't have told him beforehand and he seems to have decided in the wake of knowing that Wei Wuxian is alive to take the chance to reevaluate what he knows and what he has heard.
As for Jin Ling's suspicions, they likely come from Wei Wuxian having directly summoned Wen Ning in front of him. Even if Lan Xichen heard of it, it would be unlikely without him having seen it for himself to take those words on fact. He didn't seem to know Mo Xuanyu well beforehand and is upset and betrayed when he does turn out to be Wei Wuxian. It probably is for the best that while he has these suspicions he doesn't find out for certain for a while, because he gets to know who Wei Wuxian is underneath the rumors and lies and changes his mind on what he's heard all his life.
One of the things that may not be that apparent on a light reading, because the two people that Wei Wuxian interacts with the most are Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji who both know that it's him from the beginning, is that a lot of people have forgotten who Wei Wuxian actually is. They built him up as a bogeyman fear in their minds, turned him into the demon of the cultivation world and as a result meeting the actual person doesn't make them think of Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Laozu who supposedly killed five thousand Wens and three thousand innocent cultivators, because no one could actually be that person.
I know that CQL somewhat confused things because Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji come off as much closer during his past life, but people really didn't think they were close. Even for those who knew either of them individually, they wouldn't have made the connection and they don't. While those rumors hurt them in the past, it protects him in the present. Even after his name is revealed to the cultivators, most people don't connect the charming man traveling with Hanguang-jun to the fearsome monster in stories.
And why would they? The person who became the monster in the eyes of the cultivation world was the one who pointed out just who they were becoming. The Yiling Laozu of rumor is the reflection of who the jianghu is in the dark. And as much as they'd like to, they can't forget that.
Thank you for your question, kind anon. I hope the world is kind and your days are wonderful.

Paper thin verse is playing to all my guilty pleasures! Since WWX is LXC’s consort, have they had sex or did LXC refrain out of respect? Has LXC visited WWX for platonic mourning time when he wants to get away from the pressures of court? How do the other consorts feel about WWX and the favor he gets from LXC?
[ part one (LWJ) | two (LXC) | three (WWX) | four (LWJ) ]
--
Nie Qiongyue finds him standing beneath the cherry blossom tree in the corner of the garden, staring up into the branches, lost in thought. The closest servants are hovering several metres away, just out of earshot but still within view, ready to respond to their master's every need.
Wei Wuxian, however, remains as still as a statue. If it were not for the breeze rustling through his long hair and the ends of his pale purple robes, he could very well have been a painting. Her fingers itch with the sudden urge to commit this scene to paper: Longing beneath the cherry blossoms. She wonders if she can fully capture the longing and wistfulness that shrouds Wei Wuxian’s silhouette with her mediocre skills.
The servants startle and drop to their knees when they see her approach.
"Huanghou-niangniang," they chorus.
Wei Wuxian turns around slowly, not a hint of surprise on his face bends his knees to greet her.
“This concubine greets Huanghou-niangniang,” he says.
“You may rise,” she responds.
As he straightens again, with all the grace and poise befitting a consort of the Imperial harem, she catches the twinkle of blue jewels from the zanzi in his hair and freezes. Her hands flex; she has to stop herself from reaching for the matching jewel adorning her own hair—cut differently, more elaborately, but undeniably the same. She swallows past the lump that has formed in her throat.
“Wei-xuanyi,” she says, keeping her voice level and tone pleasant. “I hope you have settled in well. If there is anything lacking in Chenghuan Hall, do not hesitate to inform Eunuch Zhao—it will be provided to you.”
Wei Wuxian inclines his head. “This concubine thanks Huanghou-niangniang for her generosity. Chenghuan Hall is already very well provisioned, there is truly nothing that can be found lacking.”
“Then I am glad to hear it.” She turns a half-step and looks at him. “I admit the renovations were done on such short notice, I have not had the chance to view the gardens in person. Why don’t you join me on a turn about it together?”
He lowers his eyes and dips his knee briefly.
“This concubine would be honoured.”
Nie Qiongyue has been married to Lan Xichen for almost ten years, six of which she has been Empress and governed over his inner palace. She has seen dozens of young women and men paraded before him in hopes of capturing his attention in those years—all beautiful, intelligent and well-bred, with impeccable manners and grace honed by years of training for that one specific purpose.
Wei Wuxian is different. And as such, she can see that Lan Xichen regards him differently too. She knows they have not been...intimate, not in the carnal sense, although they kept up the pretense of it with Lan Xichen’s frequent visits. Her husband claims he is only trying to protect Wei Wuxian, to offer him comfort in the wake of Lan Wangji’s death. But Nie Qiongyue is not blind.
She would be lying if she says she is not a little envious of the way her husband looks at Wei Wuxian, even if he himself does not realise it.
But she is an Empress, Lan Xichen’s Empress, first and foremost. She knows her duty.
She instructs her own servants to fall back, and they join Wei Wuxian’s servants trailing behind them as they walk down the gravel path, out of earshot and gazes respectfully lowered, but always attentive. She is accustomed to their constant, watchful presence, and knows the subtle ways to navigate privacy when she needs it. Wei Wuxian, however, is carefully deliberate in the way he walks half a step behind her, his shoulders stiff and head lowered.
"How are you settling into life in the inner palace?" she asks as they make their way to the large man-made pond in the centre of the garden. "I imagine it must have been quite a big change from what you are accustomed to in Yunmeng."
Wei Wuxian manages a half-smile.
"Huanghou-niangniang is kind to ask," he says. "It is indeed very different, but I am learning. I beg your patience and forgiveness for any transgressions while I do."
"Certainly." She returns his smile with one of her own and sees some of the tension bleed from his shoulders, though his eyes remain wary. "The Emperor seems to be very fond of you.”
He stiffens again and shakes his head quickly with a bitten-off laugh.
“The Emperor is generous and kind to this undeserving concubine,” he says. “But Niangniang is the one the Emperor truly values. Compared to you, what affection the Emperor bestows upon this lowly concubine is insignificant.”
She reaches out to place a hand on his arm and feels him suppress a flinch. He masks it almost immediately with another smile, so she lets it slide.
“You have not been with us long, so you are not yet aware of the Emperor’s habits,” she tells him, keeping her tone light and friendly. “But he rarely spends more than two consecutive nights with any consort or concubine. And yet he has spent seven days of the last month here, four of which were on consecutive nights. It has surprised many of us indeed.”
She slides her hand around his arm, looping it around his elbow in a sisterly fashion as they continue to walk. He allows the movement, which brings them closer and shields them from prying eyes.
“Wei Wuxian.” He inhales at the sudden change in her tone, but doesn’t make any other outward acknowledgment. A quick learner. Good. “The Emperor has told me the truth of your situation. I want you to know that while you are here, your wellbeing is my responsibility, and I will do what is within my power in order to protect you.
“But,” she continues before he can interrupt, pulling back slightly and raising her voice. “You will still be held to the standards of an Imperial Consort, and expected to comply with the rules. You will serve the Emperor when he calls upon you. There will be no concessions, no matter how much favour the Emperor bestows upon you. Is that understood?”
Wei Wuxian studies her for a moment, an inscrutable expression on his face, before he steps out of her grip and bends his knee to her.
“This concubine is grateful for your teachings, Huanghou-niangniang,” he replies dutifully.
She nods.
“Very good.” She motions for him to stand. “You’ll do very well yet, Wei-xuanyi.”
--
“Huanghou-niangniang, Eunuch Wang from Chenghuan Hall.”
She glances up from her needlework as Eunuch Wang enters and prostrates himself on the ground before her.
“This servant pays respects to Huanghou-niangniang,” he says. She nods and turns her attention back to her embroidery, so he raises his head to continue. “The Emperor visited Chenghuan Hall again last night.”
She passes the needle through the silk, pulling the dark blue thread through the fabric in one smooth motion. She makes no acknowledgment of his words. It is hardly newsworthy, especially not these days, for Lan Xichen to visit the master of Chenghuan Hall. Eunuch Wang clears his throat awkwardly.
“Huanghou-niangniang—“
“Is it done?” she asks, still not looking up from her work.
Eunuch Wang bows.
“Yes, Niangniang,” he says. “It’s done.”
“Good.” She waves a hand in dismissal. “You may return to your post and continue your surveillance.”
It was bound to happen. She’d known it would only be a matter of time. And as Lan Xichen’s Empress, it is her duty to ensure his consorts and concubines are performing theirs.
She barely flinches when the needle pricks her finger and a dark red spot appears on the white silk. She watches it spread slowly, blossoming like the cherry blossoms in Chenghuan Hall.

Translations
Huanghou-niangniang (皇后娘娘) - Her/Your Majesty the Empress
Chenghuan Hall (承歡殿) - 承歡 (chenghuan) means to cater to somebody in order to make them happy (usually about parents). I couldn’t think of a nice, succinct translation for it at 2am in the morning so you guys get the pinyin haha

☕ any fic or meta that assumes jgy views lxc derisively/contemptuously or sees him as stupid/silly/incompetent in any way are inherently profoundly ooc, even if they also have him being affectionate/loving to lxc
Bold words!
I broadly agree with this opinion but I think it's helpful to look at why this kind of thing crops up. Ultimately the error is not simply due to misreading the source material, but is also the result of well-meaning attempts to replicate what is there in canon.
So two things are established in canon (by 'canon' I mean MDZS but I think this does also apply to CQL): JGY is exceptionally competent but lacks power and agency, and LXC is both privileged and kind. Basically: LXC means well, and JGY seethes with disguised resentment.
I can see how someone who is perhaps not experienced with close reading might leap to conclusions along the lines of: JGY's fear of everyone and his hatred and resentment is essentially the same as feeling contempt for everyone; LXC, because he is kept in the dark about some of JGY's actions, is therefore not an exception to this contempt even if it also comes packaged with love and affection.
The problem is that firstly, conflating JGY's fear and resentment with 'contempt' is incorrect. JGY is capable of contempt but it's not his driving emotion and it's certainly not universal; a close read doesn't turn up many examples of him expressing contempt, or even many hints that he's suppressing contempt. Anger, and fear, and even cruelty, yes. Contempt or derision? Infrequent at best, and generally not directed at his loved ones.
Secondly, even if JGY did feel contempt towards everyone he encounters, LXC is an exception. LXC is always an exception. I'm not going to get into a debate about what 'harm' means, except to say that what really matters here is what JGY intends to communicate. @confusion-and-more has made the excellent point that a good way of conceptualising what JGY is communicating when he says he has never thought of harming LXC is that he has never and would never turn on LXC, and I think that's a good summation.
So yes, writing JGY thinking of LXC with contempt or derision is illustrative of a misreading of the text and I don't have much to say in terms of how fic or meta of that type is executed because the premise is not grounded in the source material.
In terms of JGY simply seeing LXC as stupid/silly/incompetent, I think that is coming from a slightly different place and that's where we have not only a misreading but also a failure of execution.
The misreading as far as I can tell begins as reasonable extrapolation: JGY has lived a difficult life and is supremely competent with domestic tasks, and LXC has lived a difficult but privileged life and is therefore inexperienced with domestic tasks. What happens is this is then stretched far beyond anything canon can support, and LXC is framed as inherently naive rather than simply inexperienced in this particular area. The laundry thing is cute and humorous, but the man is not constantly smashing guqins because he can't control his strength (though I would pay to see that fanart).
Critically, there is no evidence JGY considers LXC incompetent or incapable of acquiring these practical skills. There is also no evidence that JGY connects LXC's lack of these skills to any inherent incompetence or naiveté. He accuses LXC of naiveté once to my recollection, at the most heated moment possible during Guanyin, specifically in relation to LXC trying to come up with off the cuff solutions to insoluble problems JGY has had far more time to grapple with. It's in the most challenging and stressful context possible, and not in relation to LXC's ability to wash clothes. Reading LXC's inexperience in one specific area as evidence that he is incompetent or silly or naive is completely at odds with the way he comports himself throughout the rest of canon and the way JGY responds to him—with a little reminder, also, that the laundry titbit is word of god and not even part of the text itself.
However, I do still want to make that distinction about interpretation vs. execution. Having speculated about why these misinterpretations occur, I might as well comment on pitfalls when attempting to write Xiyao. And it really is a pitfall and writing is hard! I think (based on the considerations I put into my own writing) there is this desire to portray their relationship as affectionate and playful and lived-in, which is absolutely in line with their canon interactions. But how to do this? Well, naive rich boy being cutely incompetent at an ordinary task while the streetwise poor kid lovingly assists and maybe judges them a little bit is a great trope, and on the surface it seems like it matches really well to that Word of God laundry factoid. So it's easy to fall into writing Xiyao into a pre-existing popular framework and lose sight of whether it is actually consistent with canon. It's especially easy with this particular canon, where one of the core themes is 'nuance exists'—a theme that is not a comfortable match with fandom's tendency towards absolutism.
Essentially the issue is that traits or behaviours these characters display on one or two occasions in very specific contexts are being erroneously extrapolated to draw sweeping conclusions about core character traits. This happens even when the rest of the available evidence in canon contradicts the conclusions. Coupled with the difficulty in executing the nuanced, layered relationship we see in canon when writing fic, it's not surprising that this type of mischaracterisation is prevalent.

i'm so TIRED of people with vivid imaginations trying to convince every1 the things their brains came up with happened in MDZS, just saw some1 say about lan mom "SOMETHING went down between a creepy teacher and their mother. She gets forced into marriage with a man she doesn’t love and IMPRISONED before eventually committing suicide/ falling sick and dying" like WHERE? the only piece of information was LXC saying "i have no idea WTF happened" so he doesn't know, MXTX doesn't know but you do???
Tumblr media
Some of this is a shock for my system so early in the morning... alright... I guess we're gonna go step by step with this just cause people are awful at reading, along with my stance on this particular bit of prevalent discourse.
Since this is greatly misinterpreted for whatever reasons, here is the relevant passage and only one in the text we get concerning the Lan parents. I'm going to add that this is alllll relaid by Lan Xichen and to keep that in mind with what is highlighted.
He spoke slowly, “The reason that my father often practiced secluded meditation was my mother. This place, compared to a place of living… was more like a place of detention.”
Wei WuXian was surprised.
The father of ZeWu-Jun and HanGuang-Jun, QingHeng-Jun, used to be a famous cultivator. He made his name at a young age and had many things waiting for him in the future. However, at the age of twenty, he suddenly backed away and announced his marriage. He had also ceased to care for much of the world. Although it was called secluded meditation, it was much more like retirement. People had come up with many possible reasons, but none of them had been verified.
Lan XiChen bent down amid the clusters of gentians. He gently stroked those thin, tender petals, “When my father was young, when he returned from a night-hunt once, he saw my mother outside of Gusu city.” He smiled, “I heard that it was love at first sight.”
Wei WuXian grinned as well, “The young are often sentimental.”
Lan XiChen continued, “But, the woman did not care for him the same way. In addition, she killed one of my father’s teachers.”
This was beyond imagination. Although Wei WuXian knew that asking too many questions would be very rude, however when he remembered that they had been Lan WangJi’s parents, he felt that he just had to ask. “Why?!”
Lan XiChen, “I do not know. But, I assume that it was something along the lines of ‘grievances’.”
Wei WuXian didn’t ask anymore into this and forced down his curiosity, “And… what happened later?”
“And then,” Lan XiChen explained, “When my father heard of this, of course he was in much pain. But, no matter how he struggled, he still took the woman to his sect in secrecy. Ignoring the objections from his clan, he knelt with her for the Heavens and the Earth without making a sound and told everyone in the clan that she would be his wife for the rest of his life, that whoever wanted to harm her would have to pass through him first.”
Wei WuXian widened his eyes.
Lan XiChen continued, “After the ceremony was completed, my father found a house and locked my mother inside. He found another house and locked himself inside. It was called secluded meditation, but it was in truth to repent.”
He paused before speaking again, “Young Master Wei, can you understand why he did such a thing?”
Wei WuXian answered after a moment of silence, “He could neither forgive the one who killed his teacher nor watch the death of the woman who he loved. He could only marry her to protect her life and force himself not to see her.”
Lan XiChen, “Do you think that this was right?”
Wei WuXian, “I don’t know.”
Lan XiChen looked somewhat lost, “Then, what do you think would be right?”
Wei WuXian, “I don’t know.”
A while later, Lan XiChen whispered, “It could be said that my father did this without a care for anything else. All of the seniors of the clan were enraged, but they had all watched him grow up. They could not do anything except guard this secret, hint to the outside world that the wife of the GusuLan Sect’s sect leader had an unspeakable disease and could not see others. After WangJi and I were born, we were immediately taken away to be cared for by other people. When we grew older, we were brought to Uncle to be taught."
“My shufu… has always had a frank personality to begin with. Because of how my mother caused my father to destroy his own life, he began to hate those who behaved improperly even more. Thus, he poured his heart into teaching WangJi and me. He was especially harsh as well. Every month, we could only see Mother once, inside of this cottage.”
They were two young children, who faced everyday only their harsh uncle, strict teachings, and mountains of books. No matter how tired, they had to straighten their soft backs to be the most outstanding disciples of the clan, the model students in others’ eyes. They could rarely see their closest relatives. They couldn’t fool around in their father’s arms, they couldn’t act spoiled in front of their mother.
But they had clearly done nothing wrong.
Lan XiChen, “Everytime WangJi and I went to see her, she would never complain about how tedious it was being locked inside of here, unable to step out once. She had never asked about our studies, either. She especially liked to tease WangJi, but WangJi, the more you tease him the less willing he is to talk, and the worse of an expression he puts on. He has been like this ever since he was young. However,” he chuckled, “even though WangJi never said it, I knew that every month he was looking forward to the day he could see Mother. He was like this, and I was the same.”
Wei WuXian imagined a young Lan WangJi hugged inside of his mother’s arms, his snowy little cheeks flushed pink. He laughed as well. But before his smile had even melted, Lan XiChen continued, “But one day, Uncle suddenly told us that we would have no need to go any longer."
“Mother was gone.”
Wei WuXian’s voice was soft, “How old was Lan Zhan back then?”
Lan XiChen, “Six.”
He continued, “He was still too young to understand what ‘gone’ means. No matter how much others comforted him, or how much Uncle scolded him, he would continue to come back here every single month, sit down in the hallway, and wait for someone to open the door for him. When he grew older, he understood that Mother would not be coming back, that no one would open the door for him, but he kept on coming here.”
Lan XiChen stood up. His dark eyes looked into Wei WuXian’s, “WangJi has been so stubborn ever since he was young.”
The leaves rustled and the gentian flowers swished alongside the wind, their scent lingering. Wei WuXian’s eyes landed on the wooden hallway of the cottage. He could almost see a small child wearing a forehead ribbon sitting with proper posture in front of the house, waiting quietly for the door to open.
He spoke, “Madam Lan must’ve been a very gentle woman.”
Lan XiChen, “In my memories, Mother had indeed been so. I do not know why she did such a thing back then. And, in truth, I…”
He took a deep breath before confessing, “I do not want to know either.”
After a few moments of silence, Lan XiChen closed his eyes. He took out Liebing. A gust of night wind suddenly sent forth a sobbing note of the xiao. The sound was deep, like a sigh.
Wei WuXian had heard Lan XiChen play Liebing before. Its timbre was just like Lan XiChen himself, as warm and graceful as a breeze and the rain of spring. Yet, now, although his technique was as excellent as ever, the tone evoked a strange mixture of feelings.
The night wind swept by. Lan XiChen’s hair and forehead ribbon were already somewhat disheveled. However, the GusuLan Sect’s sect leader, who had always regarded appearance highly, didn’t pay any attention to them. He only put down Liebing after the song had finished, “Music is forbidden at night in the Cloud Recesses. Today I have overstepped far too many times. Excuse me, Wei gongzi.”
Wei WuXian, “How so? ZeWu-Jun, have you forgotten that the person standing in front of you is the person who has broken the most rules…”
Lan XiChen smiled, “The GusuLan Sect has never revealed these facts about Lan Wangji and myself outside of itself. I should not have told you. Tonight was my sudden urge to unburden myself, a spur of the moment.”
Wei WuXian, “I’m not the kind of person who talks too much. Don’t worry, ZeWu-Jun.”
Lan XiChen, “Regardless, I would assume that WangJi would not hide anything from you anyways.”
Wei WuXian, “If he doesn’t wish to talk about something then I won’t ask.”
Lan XiChen, “But, with WangJi’s personality, how could he say anything if you do not ask? There are some things that even if you ask him he would not say.”
Now that we have the context of the Lan parents laid out the only definitive answer for anything concerning their personal motivations for anything is "I DON'T KNOW". Their secrets and thoughts literally died with them.
And this entire story Lan Xichen told in the end, had nothing to do with his parents. He did not tell Wei Wuxian about them, he was speaking everything unsaid about Lan Wangji's motivations and his love of Wei Wuxian. He does not care why his parents did what they did, but he does for the one that is alive. His brother who he had just had a bit of a veiled conversation about Lan Wangji's pure trust in Wei Wuxian. Who, in Lan Xichen's eyes, had already rejected his brother's love and did not feel the same, mirroring the past of their father's apparent unrequited love. He is saying Lan Wangji is sacrificing his all, unvoiced.
His pressing of if his parent "are right" is him asking Wei Wuxian what he feels about those sacrifices, if he can see the sacrifices Lan Wangji had gone through. At this point he along with Lan Wangji have assumed Wei Wuxian knows and remembers what he had said within the cave. He is telling Wei Wuxian his brother has alway been this way for those he loves regardless of what they may be perceived as by outsiders.
"Today I have overstepped far too many times. Excuse me, Wei gongzi.”"
"I should not have told you. Tonight was my sudden urge to unburden myself, a spur of the moment.”
Meaning, it was not his place to tell this about his brother, but there is no one else that would, and Lan Wangji would never say anything about his feelings again. Lan Xichen is first and foremost worried about where his brother has placed his love, as he knows, regardless of what rumors surround those he loves, his brother will still be forever loyal to them without question if he believes them to be in the right.
Lan Xichen is warning Wei Wuxian he needs to take care in his actions as he approaches Lan Wangji as Xichen is well aware already of how Lan Wangji will go through hell for others he adores. From the start it was never about his parents, as Lan Xichen says, "I do not want to know either,". But what he does want to know is where Wei Wuxian stands with his own feelings towards Lan Wangji or if he is still using his brother as he has thought for years. Leaving Lan Xichen to protect him as best as he can while Lan Wangji stays hurt for others with no happiness for himself.

MDZS fics i treasure (3)
parts 1, 2
Bet Your Heart by Vamillepudding
[general, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 14k, completed]
wwx decides to seduce lxc during his stay in gusu. spoiler alert, he seduces the wrong brother. this one definitely made it into my favourite humour fics, it’s lighthearted with the usual mutual pining and some hurt/comfort with an ALMOST bed sharing (you’ll see what i mean). the line that got me cackling over this was “i’ve taken a vow of abstinence”, ugh this fic is just so cute
cloudy autumn heaps the sky by anatheme
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 23k, completed]
DRAGON LWJ AND FOX WWX. GEGE WWX. SCREAMS. oh my god i just read this today and i am in love. this one veers towards fantasy, but the world building isn’t as different as the one in mdzs, there’s just some little additions and they’re well integrated. their first meeting is on the cloud recesses rooftop and they still have a sword fight i’m crying. ugh just strangers to friends to lovers gege wwx and didi lwj, with wwx spoiling lwj, lots of bed sharing and hints of arranged marriage? this baby’s got it all. GO READ.
Covered in Bees by ScarlettStorm
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 8k, completed]
modern beekeeping wangxian au. yes you read that right. bees. THIS IS SO ADORABLE AND FLUFFY, i love meet-cute fics so much and this one’s a fresh take on it. it’s just wwx being cute with all his questions about the bees and lwj indulging him. lots of flirting with bee puns and facts, i really enjoyed this !!
How a Pediatrician Likes His Eggs by yeolinski
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 7k, completed]
modern wangxian and their hospital shenanigans. i absolutely adore this, it’s so fluffy and the meet-ugly is one of a kind: pediatrician lwj keeps parking his car in head of surgical team wwx’s spot for three weeks and wwx is over it and keys lwj’s car. my favourite part is lwj keeping wwx’s a** p****** (READ THE FIC TO FIGURE OUT THE ASTERISKS)
Lynchpin by @shanastoryteller
[not rated, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 103k, completed]
reader, i am going to marry this fic. this is definitely my favourite time travel fix it fic. IT IS AMAZING. this is written in jiang cheng’s pov and i find that it addresses a lot of our what-ifs: “what if jc knew wwx gave him his core?”, “what if jc and yanli were more assertive towards protecting wwx during the sunshot campaign?”, “what if wangxian realized their feelings earlier?” this fic is an honest to god GEM, it’s just jiang cheng fixing everything through the power of brotherly love and i am sobbing because guys, the three of them really did stay together. just do yourself a favour and read it, also, nie mingjue is everyone’s da-ge confirmed
Children of the River by Achromos
[mature, lan xichen/jiang wanyin, 83k, completed]
xicheng is one of my favourite side ships and this fic is such a slow burn, i highly recommend it ! xichen emerges from seclusion and finds out yunmeng jiang is no longer one of the four greatest sects so xichen decides to help jiang cheng to distract himself from his grief. the found family feels is so good in this one and i find that there’s not enough lan xichen healing fics so i was happy to discover this one
It’s easier to let me go (let me hold you) by Iamthedarkoverlord
[mature, lan xichen/jiang wanyin, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 24k, complete]
this one is so, so heavy. like make you cry heavy and also lots of hurt/comfort. this fic is jiang cheng focused and deals with suicidal thoughts, there is a *suicide attempt* so please be careful reading this. my thoughts? jiang cheng needs to be wrapped in blankets and hugged very, very tightly. the ending is also very hopeful but i guarantee that the other chapters will make you sob
no certainty of doors between us by betts
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 6k, completed]
wangxian are roommates, lwj thinks he despises wwx, keyword: thinks (he’s in love with him but we already know that). i’m such a sucker for roommates fic i will devour any fic with this trope oh and add in some clothes sharing, bed sharing, one-sided enemies to lovers (from lwj’s pov), and lots of hugging... well, i’m sold. also that one scene where lwj’s trying to ask wwx what’s wrong oh my god i love it so much i can relate so hard and when lwj buys chili oil for wwx *sigh* domesticity at its finest
Oh, The Weather Outside is Frightful by feenwitch
[explicit, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 21k, completed]
because it’s winter, i present to you, snowboarders wangxian !!! of course, it’s enemies to lovers i mean what did you expect from me? this centers around coaches wangxian getting together while herding the juniors around in the snow and you can’t forget the classic *drum roll* getting stuck together in a cabin and it’s so cold that they just have to huddle together for warmth, also olympic winner lwj ! i always find myself re-reading this one, it’s so fluffy
paint smears on sunny days by SnowshadowAO3
[explicit, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 53k, completed]
MODERN SINGLE DAD LWJ WITH ART TEACHER WWX? I AM SOLD. or in which dadji accidentally co-parents with a-yuan’s art teacher. the result is me melting, this is the softest thing ever, even the way they pine in this one is the softest. wwx paints lwj + a-yuan a bunny picture, lwj composes wangxian for wwx, there’s also some making out in an art gallery. if you’re looking for a comfort fic, this would be the perfect one
the recluse at the end of the moonlit path by b_ofdale
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 28k, completed]
what if wwx dies of old age after post-canon and gets reincarnated in the modern world? you get this fic. immortal lwj just waiting for his lover to return after all of these years... give me the tissues already damn. also photographer wwx hello? and lwj builds him a dark room? LWJ IS ALWAYS BESOTTED NO MATTER THE TIMELINE.

7. Thank you for the good work! If possible, I’m in the mood for a fic where Wei Ying is taken to gusu for punishment—it could be something he agrees to to protect the Wens, could be something the sects agree on, could be something LWJ begs for instead of execution agter the siege. Preferably, no Dark!LWJ, just craving some angst where WWX and LWJ deal with him being confined to gusu as a prisoner.
not exactly a fic, but the comic series House of Gentians by @pakhnokh might fit

11. Hiiiiiiii 😊I absolutely love this blog 😍. It helps me so much when it comes to finding awesome fics!
Please can you recommend me some lengthy canon divergence fics that you love. I would love some where wangxian get together earlier and how it changes things or wwx leaving the jiang sect. Or even some with ylz wwx whos only soft on lwj. I wouldn't mind some a/b/o fics either.
Thank you so much 🌸

12. ITMF fics set during the CR study arc where WWX gives up on bugging LWJ, either because he takes it seriously when LWJ or JC tells him to cut it out, or his own (lack of) self-esteem causes him to worry that LWJ genuinely hates him, or whatever. And LWJ realising that wait no he doesn't actually want to be left alone. (Bonus if there's some angst where WWX throws himself into his studies as a distraction & becomes a model student & LWJ now has to listen to LQR praising him & saying how glad he is that whatever was distracting him before has stopped.) @thispatternismine

14. Hi! For the next itmf… any fics with mini version of mdzs lovers? Like for example Wwx has a mini version of Lwj and Lwj has a mini version of Wwx. (Can be a soulmate indicator where once they reach a certain age, they will have a chibi/mini version of their soulmate)
~*~
15. This is kind of a specific ITMF so please bear with me, but: I've read a few arranged marriage fics where Wangxian got off to a rough start, and they both were convinced the other was unhappy in the marriage, so they both tried to do what they thought the other wanted and it just ended up making things worse, like WWX making himself miserable by obsessively complying with the rules like a Good Lan Spouse(tm) and LWJ realizing WWX won't laugh or smile when he's around (excessive emotion is prohibited!) so he tries to stay away as much as possible so WWX can feel more comfortable, and they're just both feeling so guilty for not being what the other wants. It's my current favorite flavor of angst, so if anybody has anything with similar vibes, pretty please lay it on me.
💖 love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360k, wangxian, Canon Divergence, YLLZ WWX, Arranged Marriage, political scheming, Gratuitous Domesticity, Pining, slow burn, The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known, bottom LWJ)

16. #itmf I'm in the mood for a fic which deals with Wei Ying's three month long disappearance from Lan Zhan's point of view, about Lotus pier burning and Wei Ying missing and whatever rumors to the rumor that he fell into the Burial Mounds? If this is too specific, then Lan Zhan's POV on Wei Ying's three months in Burial Mounds (at any point of time in mdzs verse) would do as well @wutheringskies

silver-steel and snow: a preview
ft. lxc coming out and a very supportive da-ge
When Nie Mingjue is twenty-seven, and Lan Xichen is twenty-five, his friend finally confesses to him why he cannot marry, over a shared meal in Mingjue’s bedroom after Huaisang leaves the two of them alone and goes off to feed his pet birds.
It isn’t as if Mingjue has never wondered, of course. Xichen is a sect leader, and a marriage would have been brokered for him years ago if he had been born as the heir to Yunmeng Jiang or Lanling Jin—even Qingheng-jun was wed by the time he was twenty, though the reason behind his clandestine wedding and then his lifelong seclusion have never come to light. Wangji married in secret, and had a child he kept hidden from the world until after the siege at the Nightless City; as for Nie Mingjue, his love for Xichen means that he will remain alone unless Xichen returns his feelings one day, and Huaisang once hinted that Sect Leader Jiang is still unmarried because the girl he wanted to court rejected him and then died during the siege, much like Wangji’s unknown wife had done.
Lan Xichen is not held back from marriage by widowerhood, like Wangji, or lost love like Jiang Wanyin, or even by love not yet requited like Nie Mingjue himself, but he doesn’t seem even slightly concerned about finding a cultivation partner; and his clan has never sought to find a partner for him, to Nie Mingjue’s selfish relief.
He tries to think of Lan Huan marrying someone who isn’t him, and winces at how much the image of his friend wearing red for some nameless bride or bridegroom makes his stomach hurt. Xichen has only ever worn red in private with him—with him, if not for him, on the day they attended the tournament in Qishan together before Nie Mingjue’s father died. But the thought of Lan Xichen never marrying at all is only marginally better, because then Xichen will never marry him, and a future where he can no longer dream of Lan Huan being his husband will be too dark and lonely to bear.
I’ll be beside you in all things, Mingjue-xiong, his Xichen promised him once. He upheld that oath throughout their youth and then through the war and all that followed, and even during both of their untimely ascensions as sect leaders, first Nie Mingjue’s and then Xichen’s a bare three years later—but then Wangji withdrew into seclusion to mourn his wife and left his child behind for Xichen to raise, and Nie Mingjue went a whole four months without seeing him for the first time in his life. It struck him then that Lan Xichen had a clan of his own and a family, and that they would always take precedence over him unless he found some way to join them—and marriage is the only way he can hope to do it, because a lifetime’s worth of intimate friendship and then their sworn brotherhood have already proved insufficient.
“You need not fear you will suffer as Wangji does, if you marry,” Nie Mingjue tries to tell Xichen now, while pouring him a cup of rose tea. “There was—so many cultivators died that day, Xichen, some from my own clan...and such a thing will never happen again. When you are married, you and your beloved can—”
Can what, A-Jue? he hears his dead father whisper, somewhere in the part of his mind that still belongs to his living parents and a toddling baby Huaisang. Can you live out Lan Xichen’s long years beside him, with the Nie blood running in your veins? Lan Wangji met his wife during the war, and he still mourns for her so much that he can scarcely bear to look at the son she left him—what do you think it would do to Lan Huan to love you and then lose you, when he scarcely remembers a life without you in it?
“I will have no beloved,” Xichen interrupts. “A-Jue, I cannot—I can’t have a beloved.”
Nie Mingjue’s heart clenches in his chest, and he tries very hard to act as if Xichen’s insistence isn’t breaking it in half. “But you were made to be married, A-Huan. You are good, and kind, and—and brave, and any woman would be lucky to have you as her husband. You would be an excellent one, and when your children arrived you would love them and tend to them like you did with Wangji and A-Sang, and like you do with A-Yuan now, and…”
“Mingjue-xiong!” Lan Xichen actually raises his voice a little, and Mingjue falls silent in shock—because he has never heard A-Huan raise his voice before, not even in the Sun Palace when he stood in front of Jin Guangyao and convinced Mingjue not to hurt him. “It isn’t that I won’t. I can’t.”
The declaration sounds oddly final, without a hint of protest; as if A-Huan simply said that the sky was blue or that there would be meat at the dining hall that evening, and Nie Mingjue finally realizes that his friend is trying to tell him something more than the subject of their conversation might suggest.
“What is it, Lan Huan?” he says gently. “Why can’t you?”
“I am yi xin yi shen,” Lan Xichen sighs. “Whole in heart, and in body. I—do not seek to be made complete, in love or through any passion of the flesh, and the...the duties of a husband and cultivation partner would not suit me, any more than a man who would have a husband could be contented with a wife. I have always known it, and when I came of age, I told Shufu so that he would stop introducing me to maidens in the hope that I could grow to care for one of them.”
“Yi xin yi shen—you mean you—”
And Nie Mingjue finds himself unable to speak, because it wasn’t—it had never been—
It was never because I wasn’t enough, some part of him is crying. It’s because this is what A-Huan is, and if he was not so, he would not be himself, and so—how can I help but cherish this truth about him, too? The man I love has always been this, and now that he has told me—does it not mean that I am close enough to be trusted with something so near to his heart?
“A-Jue? What are you—oh!”
Lan Xichen sounds confused, but not upset, and a second later Nie Mingjue opens his eyes again and looks down to find himself on Xichen’s side of the table, holding his friend in a loose embrace as A-Huan huffs a soft, surprised laugh and leans back on his shoulder.
“Are you happy, this way?” Mingjue asks. “You are, right?”
A-Huan nods. “I am, but—”
“If Jin Guangshan dares mention marriage in your presence again, we’ll see how well that little dagger of his does against Baxia,” he vows. “It’s—vulgar, the way he keeps insisting that loneliness cannot be long endured even by the First Jade of Lan, when we and every last man and woman in his court knows he does not speak of love, or know anything about it himself.”
“Mm, perhaps you can. I wouldn’t even object if I didn’t know it would cause difficulties for A-Yao,” Xichen tells him. “That was...rather difficult to bear, especially when I have Wangji and A-Yuan to look after and could not say anything about it in Jin-zongzhu’s presence.”
Nie Mingjue sobers and nods his head. “You’ll have to go back to them soon, won’t you? I’ll have someone pack your things.”
But Xichen only tightens his grasp on Nie Mingjue’s hand and gestures to the empty pot of steamed mushroom soup, and then at the other vegetable dishes that he had the cooks prepare for the evening.
“You made half the kitchen staff attend to my dinner to make certain that I would like it, A-Jue, and you even brought out the blue blankets I slept with back when we were children—so I can stay for one night, can’t I?” A-Huan smiles. “Come on. Let’s go to bed, Mingjue-xiong.”

The Guanyin Temple Event: another essay
(spoilers for episode 47 - 50 and the novel. All novel excerpts taken from the wonderful translations provided by Team Exiled Rebels Scanlations)
I didn’t read the Mo Dao Zu Shi novel until I was about a dozen episodes into The Untamed, but once I did, there were two events that I was most looking forward to seeing depicted on-screen: the Phoenix Mountain Hunt and the climax at the Guanyin Temple. The main reason for my heightened anticipation was because they were both critical and awesome events in the novel and also because I couldn’t wait to see how Team CQL was going to work around the blatant WangXian-ness present in them. Since I already wrote at length about the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, I won’t delve into that topic again, but suffice it to say I was quite pleased at what the drama team came up with in place of the blindfolded make-out session between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.
For the Guanyin Temple event, I knew Team CQL had their work cut out for them because it wasn’t just a kiss they had to work around, but a whole ton of WangXian moments since that’s pretty much when Wei Wuxian, our completely awesome and lovable but dense AF protagonist, finally finds out that Lan Wangji has been in love with him for like…forever…and they acknowledge their feelings for each other (in front of family and foes no less). From the moment WWX finds out about Lan Zhan’s love for him until the end of the Guanyin Temple incident, it’s so loaded with WangXian cuteness that I almost died laughing while reading those passages: for me, at times their lovey-doveyness actually crossed into cringe-territory. Not that they didn’t earn the right to be completely corney, mushy puppies in love, but I still had to cover my eyes, shake my head and turn away in embarrassment a few times. I mean, I was literally suffering from a diabetic attack during some of those scenes.
Of course I didn’t expect mushiness to that level in the show…there’s still censorship to consider after all…but I was hoping for a ghost of what happened in the novel so that once again the spirit of their love confession can still be captured on the show. Or at the very least, I was hoping for some Easter eggs that would let us know that the production team understands our pain and wishes they could’ve given us all the WangXian love too.
Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be any of that. In fact, with much regret, I have to say that in terms of WangXian quotient, I was a rather disappointed in CQL’s adaptation of the Guanyin Temple event.
It almost felt like in the end, Team CQL couldn’t really come up with anything to replace the abundance of WangXian love we were given in the novel, so they chose to just completely avoid any hints of it altogether. If I’m going to be honest, LWJ even seemed grumpy most of the time. I don’t blame Wang Yibo’s performance for this at all (I will never blame him for anything LWJ…he has given us such an amazing LWJ that he is blameless forever in my book. Same goes for Xiao Zhan and his WWX), I’m sure that’s the direction he was given, which makes me really scratch my head in perplexity. To jump ahead a little, a good example of this is during the scene where LWJ is protecting WWX from Fairy. In the novel, we had this exchange during that moment: (from chapter 101):
Wei WuXian, “Hug me!”
Lan WangJi, “I am hugging you!”
Wei WuXian, again, “Hug me tight!”
Lan WangJi, also, “I am hugging you tight!”
Whereas in the drama, we didn’t really have any dialogue and Lan Zhan didn’t even look too pleased about having to protect Wei Ying from the fluffy puppy. In fact, I was actually a bit bummed when he raised his arm to protect WWX: they started out with Wei Ying clinging to Lan Zhan’s body but raising his arm like that actually caused Wei Ying to move away from him, making their interaction less intimate.
Tumblr media
Then there was that pivotal moment in the courtyard of the temple in the beginning, where WWX was being held hostage by Jin Guangyao and his guqin string: that was a scene I was especially looking forward to since that’s when Wei Ying blurts out the line that he’s always wanted to sleep with LWJ, which pretty much sets off his confession of love and devotion afterwards. I was extremely curious what dialogue Team CQL would put in place of something as blatant as that. I was hoping for something along the lines of “no matter what, you will always be my 知己” from WWX, which would’ve served as another callback to what they said on Phoenix Mountain and what they were thinking about during that snowy evening on Cloud Recesses. Just something poignant yet meaningful to capture all the love WWX has for Lan Zhan. Sadly, all we got was forgiveness from WWX about what happened during Nightless City, which, as heartfelt as the words were uttered (WWX saying it all teary-eyed got me all teary-eyed as well), they still felt almost a little unnecessary at that point. Especially since we already got that pardon when Lan Zhan was drunk and Wei Ying was telling him all of it was not his fault. Sure, Lan Zhan’s sober this time around and I did sense all the emotions in their expressions, but in terms of what was actually being said, as a replacement for “Lan Zhan! Lan WangJi! HanGuang-Jun! Back then, I-I really wanted to sleep with you!”? I’m sorry, it fell wayyyy short.
I also didn’t like the fact that once they were inside the temple, sitting side by side, the dialogue was changed to the following:
Tumblr media
Where’s the love in that?? Again, it’s not like I was expecting anything hot and heavy like it was in the book (from chapter 100):
Wei WuXian couldn’t let out another sound. Amidst the darkness, Lan WangJi had already embraced him tightly, stopping him with his lips.
Lan WangJi’s breaths were short and disordered. His hoarse voice whispered beside Wei WuXian’s ear, “… fancy you…”
Wei WuXian hugged him tight, “Yes!”
Lan WangJi, “… love you, want you…”
Wei WuXian raised his voice, “Yes!”
Lan WangJi, “Cannot leave you… do not want anyone but you… it cannot be anyone but you!”
But maybe just a little more affection?  In the book, there was so much love going on between WWX and LWJ at Guanyin Temple that even Jin Guangyao was nice enough to step aside and give them some alone time to talk out their feelings. Big bro Lan Xichen and Jin Ling also made sure to sit away from them so that they could hug and kiss it out. The show actually kept the seating arrangement intact, which I guess was meant as a nod to the fans, but I would’ve rather they kept the sentiments instead.
Not that Guanyin Temple was completely devoid of WangXian moments, thankfully, we did get the following little touches:
Tumblr media
But if you read the novel, I have to believe you’d agree with me just a bit that all of that was hardly comparable to the source material. I don’t know if Team CQL decided to change things this way so that the ending with LWJ deciding to separate from WWX (although temporarily) would make more sense, or if the censorship monster finally got to them; either way, I wish they had been just a little more…creative and generous, I guess? It pains me to say that since it sounds like I’m being rather ungrateful—they have given us so much already—but Guanyin Temple was just so important to WWX and LWJ’s relationship, I can’t help but wish it was…better? At least in terms of WangXian.
Not to mention, strangely, there seemed to be more technical problems with the Guanyin Temple episodes than with any other consecutive batch of eps prior to them. The issues ran the gamut of bad production choices: awkward pacing (I love Wen Ning and it was cool seeming him possessed by Baxia, but it felt like it took him at least half an hour to get from the courtyard to actually inside the damn temple), very obvious editing errors (one moment WWX has his hand on LWJ’s hand, the next he doesn’t, and then he does again), clunky scene transitions, bad sound editing/mixing (why are we hearing the flute on top of Wei Ying’s whistling and the melodies aren’t even the same?), and if I’m going to be honest, the fight choreography and scene set up were kind of mediocre too.  It felt like only the actors were bringing their A-game during those scenes while the production team was already getting ready for the wrap party since the show was going to be over soon. I mean, look at this, where the hell was A-Yao running off to?
Tumblr media
Why couldn’t they show his death? It was so much better and creepier in the novel. Or is he even dead? Did they keep that open-ended too just in case they want to bring him back for the movie? And will LXC even get his sword back???
I know I sound rather negative, and I actually debated for a while on even sharing my feelings because I hate being so critical of this show that gave me so much joy for the most part. I also didn’t want to bum anyone out with my criticisms, however, even though I love, I can never love blindly, so I just have to get all the griping out of my system.
On the bright side, despite being disappointed by the WangXian quotient and the technical shortcomings of these eps, I was quite pleased by some of the changes Team CQL made from the novel which, imho, I thought were actual improvements from the source material (sorry, MXTX-laozi!). First of all, I really appreciated the closure we got between Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying. I LOVED that the two Yunmeng brothers got to talk things out and really reconciled. I especially loved this look JC had as he watched WWX play his flute:
Tumblr media
As if he was both proud and relieved that WWX found a way to be strong again even without his golden core. We didn’t get such a sweet moment in the book. There actually wasn’t much interaction between them after Wei Ying told JC to just forget about the past; in fact, there seemed to still be some residual bad feelings which made me think the Yunmeng brothers weren’t really ever going to be ok again.  WWX definitely didn’t wipe away JC’s tears or even touch him. That affectionate exchange we were given in the drama was just so precious and needed after all the pain both of them have been through, and it made me feel so much happier and reassured about their relationship. I’m glad that in both versions JC didn’t tell WWX what actually happened the day he was taken by the Wen Sect: it would’ve been just yet another heartache to burden Wei Ying who obviously was ready to move on with his new life. That little consideration made me love Jiang Cheng so much more.
Another improvement was the resolution between Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao. I tried really hard not to ship big bro and A-Yao, but dammit, the show pretty much forced me to, especially towards the end with their last scenes together.  Before I say anything else, I must really commend Liu Haikuan and Zhu Zanjin, the actors who brought LXC and JGY to life respectively: they really delivered during their scenes in Guanyin Temple. Zhu Zanjin is always on the verge of overacting and sometimes actually crosses the line, but all of his choices really worked for me within those scenes. I completely felt the hurt and anger from JGY when he thought LXC never trusted him, just as much as I felt the same emotions from LXC when his A-Yao revealed his true colors.  They made my heart hurt for both of them and wish for a happy ending for them, which is just crazy because JGY is not a good person. As WWX pointed out, JGY really is a lot like Xue Yang, but he probably didn’t realize just how alike they are: they’re both technically monsters but still somehow capable of love…or a twisted form of it at least that passed for normal for them. One of my favorite pieces of dialogue in the entire novel was actually JGY’s (chapter 108):
“In this life, I’ve lied countless times, killed countless times. Like you said, I killed my father, my brother, my wife, my son, my teacher, my friend—of all the evil in the world, what haven’t I done?!” He took in a breath, rasping, “But I’ve never even thought of harming you!”
That moved me so much, and I actually teared up when JGY uttered basically those same words in the show because I believed he meant them, it wasn’t just a ploy to manipulate LXC again. And then, at the very last minute when JGY was about to pull LXC into the coffin so that the two of them could die together, in the book, JGY just suddenly pushed LXC away. I loved that in the show, we are shown LXC’s acceptance to the fate JGY intended for them…
Tumblr media
…and that is why he pushes his second brother away. It was enough for him to know LXC didn’t regard him the same way that Nie Mingjue did after all, that he did genuinely care for JGY all these years. Although JGY probably didn’t deserve such satisfaction before his death considering all the people he‘s killed and harmed (except for Jin Guangshan…that asshole deserved everything he got…I’d count that as a PLUS on JGY’s karma scale, even if that was his dad), I still couldn‘t help feeling a bit happy that he attained it. I can‘t help it, JGY reminds me of a Puss-in-boots half of the time.
Tumblr media
Finally, as heart-breaking as it was, I appreciated how much more affected Wei Ying was by the revelation that he had just been an unwitting pawn and victim in JGY’s schemes all this time. In the novel, the truth seemed to mostly rolled off his back, probably because he was too busy cuddling with LWJ to even care anymore, but in The Untamed, WWX seemed downright devastated. I have to say, Xiao Zhan really has mastered the laughing-while-crying combo-hit so damn well that he never fails to make my eyes well up every time he delivers that killer move.
Tumblr media
I really felt his pain and anger at how much he suffered because of what JGY and Su She did, and how wronged he was by them, even if JGY tried to partially lay the blame on him and Jiang Cheng. What made JGY’s words especially hurtful was the modicum of truth to them, because WWX was being incendiary and arrogant during that time, and JC really didn’t have his back at all. He definitely never stood up for him like Shijie did at Phoenix Mountain. Again, I should hate JGY for hurting them with such painful truths and hell, I should hate him solely for all that he has done to WWX, whether it was purposeful or happenstance, but I simply don’t. I might feel differently if Wei Ying wasn’t given a second chance at life and happiness, but thankfully he was and that does make all difference in the world. I don’t even hate Su She…I just think he’s really pathetic and I’m glad he died the way he did.
So, do all of these positive factors balance out what I thought were definite missteps in the drama’s version of what happened at Guanyin Temple? If we had another 10 episodes of Wei Ying and Lan Zhan interactions to look forward to, the answer would probably be yes. OR, if we were given a bona fide, neat as a bow, unquestionably happy ending for them, the answer would also be yes. However, because this was the last couple of episodes we would ever get in the series before its conclusion and the ending was not quite as neat as I wish it would’ve been, then the answer is, sadly, no. I feel we were simply deprived too much of WangXian–I think they spent half the time just spectating at what was going on–and therefore for me, the execution of the Guanyin Temple events by Team CQL unfortunately leaned more on the side of being a disappointment overall.
Thank you once again for reading my second thesis. I have no idea if I will ever be able to earn my doctorate in MDZS/The Untamed, but I will continue to work hard at it. At the very least, I hope all this blabbering has granted me the privilege of being a somewhat worthy disciple-in-training.

MDZS/GDC Fic: In which LXC reminisces about JGY.
Title: The Blessing of Three Lifetimes Prompt: If Only Characters: Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao For: @thelonglazyworm A/N: These two saddens me, whether I see them as just mere bros or in a relationship. I also can’t stop thinking about the four paintings that LXC drew for JGY.
-
Lan Xichen would not be so naïve as to assume that he knew everything there was to know about Jin Guangyao.
They had known each other for well over a decade — a decent amount of time that allowed a man like Lan Xichen to see through any disguises or unsavory lies one might use to take advantage of his kindness and friendship — but he’d never expected that his own sworn brother, one he’d known since they were both young and idealistic and striving to do their best in their respective sects, to shoulder on the responsibilities in their own roles, a man whom Lan Xichen thought was merely too green and wished to achieve too much in too short a time, would be the one to exploit him and deceive him until the last breath he took.
But had it all be an act? Lan Xichen asked himself again and again ever since his own younger brother and Wei Wuxian had revealed a part of Jin Guangyao that Lan Xichen had not known until that moment. But that wasn’t fair, he thought to himself, a sliver of self-hatred bleeding into his heart, impossible to pull out, because if he was being honest, hadn’t he, in some ways, been adamantly turning a blind eye to Jin Guangyao’s actions?
The path that Jin Guangyao had ended up taking — the one that’d led him to a point of no return — could he really claim that he had no part in pushing Jin Guangyao towards that direction?
Without a warning, the image of Jin Guangyao’s blood-smeared face as he pushed him away from Nie Mingjue’s deadly grasp appeared in his mind once more; his voice too, drenched in biting bitterness, “Lan Xichen! I have told many lies and took many lives in my lifetime. Just as you said, I have murdered my father, my brother, my wife, my son, my mentors, and my friends. There are no atrocities under the heavens that I have not committed! But I would never think of hurting you!” echoed by his ears, a ghost that refused to fade away.
Lan Xichen’s hands shook, just a minute tremble that was hardly noticeable to others, and he forced his heart to steel over as he pressed the blade of Shuoyue deep into the soil that would forever bury and bind the souls and bodies of his two sworn brothers, their lives ripped and torn apart violently in ways neither man had expected nor wanted.
Other sect leaders follow his lead as they utilized their own weapons or tools infused with spiritual powers, and the area surrounding the burial site was engulfed in a blinding dome of lights and staggering waves of energy that undulated and radiated outwards, causing the living things nearby to scurry away and hide.
After the burial and sealing rite, many of the cultivators from different sects left immediately. There was no doubt that fabricated rumors and unforgiving mockery targeting Jin Guangyao and Lanling Jin Sect would begin to spread far and wide like resentful energy encroaching and tainting one’s body.
“Xichen,” he heard the deep, comforting voice of his uncle calling him from behind, and then a hand was placed on his shoulder.
“Shu-fu,” Lan Xichen greeted Lan Qiren with a respectful bow, and before the elder man could say more, Lan Xichen lifted his head up, his eyes revealing an expression that Lan Qiren hadn’t seen on the young man’s face since the passing of his mother — a hint of quiet suffering that would never find its way to the surface of his impeccably masked face of a great clan’s leader. “Will you please allow me to stay here for a while?”
“Do not take too long,” Lan Qiren only said before walking away to gather the rest of the Lan Sect disciples.
Lan Xichen turned back to the granite tablet that they’d placed to mark the burial site of the coffin that encased the bodies of Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao, who would forever be stifling within the foulness of their own unsettled rage, rancor, and bitterness until there was nothing left inside to burn, the embers dying, turning into ashes, and their souls dissolving to encompass the cycle of nature.
Or reincarnate to their next lives — better lives.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the corpses that laid deep below him, trapped in the unending darkness.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the better times when the three of them had shared drinks and talked of the future.
From his qiankun bag, Lan Xichen took out four scrolls tied delicately in thin red strings: the paintings of the seasonal sceneries that he’d painted for Jin Guangyao when the younger man had grumbled about how plain the walls of his study had seemed.
Lan Xichen didn’t mind indulging in his younger sworn brother’s little pleasures, and so while he had some free time, he would paint in his room, every brushstroke careful yet unrestrained so that the mountains, trees, and waters burst with life and motions, the shades and hues of colors gentle yet vibrant so that the pinks of the peach blossoms and reds of the deciduous leaves emitted the essence of spring and autumn, while the grey-tinted white of the snow and blues of the waterfalls and creeks evoked the core of winter and summer.
When Lan Xichen presented the paintings to Jin Guangyao a few months later, the latter was so happy and excited about the gift; his eyes were glowing with the kind of open and honest delight and exuberance that was seldom seen on the face of the always-smiling leader of Jin Sect. It was a different kind of smile, Lan Xichen noticed, his heart growing warmer at the sight, it was the kind of smile that Jin Guangyao could never muster up before the public, and Lan Xichen was somewhat glad to know that he was one of the few people Jin Guangyao trusted enough to allow himself to see this side of him.
“Thank you, er-ge,” Jin Guangyao didn’t forget his manners, and he swiftly turned to face Lan Xichen with a bright, infectious grin.
Lan Xichen returned a warm smile of his own.
“A-Yao, do you know why I have chosen to portray the same scenery in different seasons?”
Jin Guangyao shook his head, and asked, “will er-ge tell me?”
He walked over to where the four paintings lay flat on the desk, his forefinger tracing the inked line of the jagged edges of a cliffside in the winter scenery.
“The passing of seasons depicts a cycle that never seems to end: spring comes, spring leaves, spring returns. But the passage of time will surely bring changes no matter how much we sometimes wish time would freeze and all stays the same. What I hope is that the affinity between A-Yao and myself will prevail and remain strong always.”
“It will,” Jin Guangyao promised, his hand — a hand that’d experienced harsh conditions when he was still a child — clasped over Lan Xichen’s that was still placed on the painting.
‘If only…’ Lan Xichen thought, knowing it was useless at this point.
If only he’d noticed sooner.
If only Jin Guangyao had been completely honest with him.
But Jin Guangyao knew the type of man Lan Xichen was — he knew him too well, in fact — so well that he probably saw beforehand that Lan Xichen would not approve of any of the things he’d chosen to do in the end.
‘I… I would have done anything to keep you safe, A-Yao,’ Lan Xichen took out a flame talisman and activated it; he watched red flares flickering along the edges of the paper talisman and released it from between his fingers. It dropped on top of the four tidily arranged scrolls, and the fire began to hungrily swallow. ‘I would have stopped you and pulled you back before you had strayed too far…”
Jin Guangyao was teetering at the edge of a cliff and Lan Xichen hadn’t even noticed it until Jin Guangyao already had one foot stepping over.
He knew Jin Guangyao was the type who’d dare to get his hands dirty and do any and every unscrupulous deed in order to achieve the results he’d promised to get; he would not let anyone look down on him ever again, and his act and achievements in the past years had ensured that. Other people called him dirty names behind his back, both due to his roots as the child of a prostitute and his ambitious nature, but all this time, Lan Xichen would defend his name and honor.
They just didn’t understand him, Lan Xichen had thought, a rare flash of anger sparked up like small licks of flame, not enough to set all rationality ablaze, but just enough to leave a burnt mark behind like an unpleasant, singed reminder.
“A-Yao, what should I believe?” Lan Xichen whispered into the silent air.
Even in the end, Lan Xichen didn’t get an answer from Jin Guangyao. He wasn’t sure whether he felt relieved or frustrated.
The acrid scent of burnt paper stung his eyes.
To have known and become so closely and intimately acquainted with each other in this lifetime — what more could Lan Xichen asked for? Yet they had chosen to take different paths that gradually pulled them apart, and Lan Xichen thought, it was already a blessing to have met you, but perhaps only after three lifetimes would we be able to walk down the same path, and return to the same place.
The paintings had burnt out, ashes curling by his feet. The flames dissipated, and only smoke lingered like an obstinate spirit.
Lan Xichen exhaled, his head lowered as he wiped the silent tears that’d stained his cheeks with his sleeve.
When he pulled himself up to his feet once more, Lan Xichen’s eyes became clear.

1. Hi! I hope everyone's ok! Could you please help me find a fic? Last time I read it it was wip. It's a time travel fic that starts with punishment after they get caught drinking. WWX starts crying, I think, and he keeps avoiding LWJ. Then he goes to talk to LQR and asks him to get all sect leaders, then confesses he is from the future, I think WN also went back, and they want to help everyone prevent bad things to happen, including JGY.. do I even make sense? Sorry and thank you.

2. Hi! I'm trying to find this one-shot I read a while back. LWJ comes across A-Yuan calling LXC uncle? I believe. LWJ corrects him and asks him not to call him that. He makes it clear to LXC that he is unhappy about him allowing the siege against the burial mounds. Might not be entirely accurate but this si the gist of the fic. Thank you!

3. Hi! Do you guys know of a crack fic where lqr gives sex ed to teenage lwj and wwx?
Lqr notices wangxian's mutual attraction (i think they are bethrothed? but I'm not too sure) and discusses this with xichen. Lqr hints at the need to give them both "the talk". Xichen shudders thinking about the time he got "the talk" from lqr. Lqr says xichen doesn't have to give wangji "the talk" since he is also young, plus getting "the talk" from an elder brother must be embarrassing and harrowing (lqr got "the talk" from lwj's dad lol).
Lqr asks wangxian to come to extra classes where he gives them sex ed much to wangxian's embarrassment. Lqr is no nonsense about it, nit embarrassed about explaining ecerything explicitly and scientifically. wangxian just wants to get out of there as they're both red with embarrassment. Lqr also asks wq give wangxian oil and tools for them to figure out which position each liked so that their future married life will be easier. Wangxian are by rule meant to be celibate until marriage.

4. Hii!! I was planning on just cutting my losses, but this is literally tearing my up from the inside out. I’m looking for a fic where Hualian adopted child Wei Ying, and because of being homeless, Wei Ying gets very sick with a high fever but tries to hide that from them. But Xie Liam see’s him eating less and WY eventually starts coughing violently then it’s revealed. He almost dies from the fever while Hua Cheng and Xie Liam watches over him. WY soon thinks that he is burdening the both of them and climbs out a window to sneak out, but gets caught by Hua Cheng when he collapses in the snow. Hua Cheng carrie’s him back and then the three have a heart to heart where I think WY starts crying.
I EVEN HAVE A QUOTE FROM A SC I PREVIOUSLY TOOK FROM THE FIC: “Immediately, he's shivering, bare feet sinking into the snow drift. He can barely put one foot in front of the other, it's so high, and leaves an obvious trail for anyone to follow. One two. Three four. Five steps and he's falling face first. He can't get back up.
"Wei Ying! Wei Ying?!"
He doesn't answer, but he feels more than sees Hua Cheng find his trail and stick half his body out the window, almost falling face first into the snow himself.
Scrambling is audible, and he soon finds himself lifted. Held.
"Gege! Gege, we need more blankets now!" Hua Cheng says, long legs stepping through the window. Suddenly Xie Lian is there, eyes sleep-swollen and hair a rat's nest. He's carrying all the blankets in the house by the looks of it."
I need to at least know if the fic was deleted so can have some closure, TY!! :D

5. Hello! I have a question for the next fic finder - thank you so much in advance!
My instinct is that this was a post-cannon fic, because I think I remember Jin Ling being there (although not positive on that!) - I just remember that WWX was traveling to Lotus Pier, but there was a really bad storm and he got lost and ended up falling off a cliff and into the river and almost drowning - and from there the fic cuts back and forth between JC, LWJ, and others, who eventually realize he's missing and go looking for him, and WWX, who is badly hurt and like drifiting in-and-out of consciousness somewhere along the river where he got swept away to.
I can't find it anywhere and I've exhausted every combination of tags I can think of to try to find it!
Hey there! I'm #5 on the most recent fic finder and unfortunately, it's not 'The Storm That Should Not Be', although I also love that one and have it bookmarked, lol!
My memory is that the fic I'm thinking of was a multi-chapter fic, and WWX was traveling to Lotus Pier with either JC or LWJ, but there's a storm and they accidentally get separated in the rain and darkness, and WWX doesn't see the approaching cliff and falls off it into the river and gets swept away - meanwhile JC/LWJ reaches Lotus Pier safely and is like, "what do you mean WWX hasn't showed up yet?" And then they send search parties after, and don't find him until like a day or two later, washed up at the edge of the river and half-drowned.

6. Hey, for the next fic finder, I’m looking for a modern cultivation AU, where Wangxian are partners and hunting a succubus(incubus?). They get caught, LWJ gets dosed with truth serum, WWX manages to fake getting dosed but LWJ doesn’t know that. WWX lies to the succubus that he’s not in love with his partner, breaking LWJ’s heart. At some point, the ‘bus’s kidnaps LWJ, WWX saves him, and they talk and WWX confesses that he wasn’t actually dosed with truth serum and yes he is in love. @any-mouse

7. hello i am trying to remember a fanfic where everyone including lwj thinks wei ying cheated on him with wen qing i think when actually he was trying to adopt his son. anyway then wei ying leaves and then lwj finds him after figuring out the truth. thanks in advance if you can find it, i’m struggling lol. / okay my bad i originally posted this on the wrong account but anyways. so basically i think it’s set in a modern au, and wwx gets confronted by the lans (including lwj) and his family, accusing him of cheating with wen qing. he’s not (obviously), and is trying to finalize the adoption of his son. nobody believes him and he leaves. i think he ends up owning a bakery or working (this could be wrong) when lwj finds him years later and apologizes, realizing the truth. thanks in advance!!!

8. Time travel fix-it where WWX did sketches and was accused of being a spy
Hello! I'm looking for a time travel fix-it fic where WWX was thrown into the past with everyone living happily. In exchange, everyone will forget him and he remains without a golden core. LWJ and the juniors still manage to cross paths with him when their night hunt takes them to the faraway village where WWX lives. WWX gives them food and lodging after a hunt gone awry, and LWJ discovers the sketches WWX did of him, JYL, JZX, JC, etc. They all go back to the Cloud Recesses because WWX is accused of being a spy. Happy WangXian ending ofc.
I hope people know this fic! I could've sworn I bookmarked this, but it's not in my bookmarked fics. ): Tysm!

9. hello, this is a nsfw ask! i’ve been trying to look for it to no avail and now i’m starting to wonder if it was just all a fever dream lol, anyways the fic goes like this: lwj and wwx (on lwj’s lap) are watching a movie and nhs and wq were there as well (it was movie night) and at some point things get steamy between lwj and wwx but they’re trying to keep it discreet

10. Hello, I’d like to request a fic be found( if possible)
Set in Cannon typical. I’m not sure if there is much deviation because the fic focused on WWX living in CR and working on ED recovery after the Burial Mounds. In this he has a meat aversion and relies on soups a lot.
My thanks for your time! @empiresprince

11. Hii it’s my first time writing here so I hope it’s okay.
I’m searching for a fic where the person who summons wwx (I don’t remember if in this fic is mxy) hates him so wishes for him to die/suffer and if he doesn’t fulfill that wish his soul won’t go to the cycle for rebirth so when he feels happiness it’s painful.
so there a moment when he finally has a moment with Lan Zhan (I think there’s a drawing involved not a 100% sure) but he suddenly starts felling really intense pain Because it was the happiest he has felt since he was brought back
I don’t more but I’ve been searching for it :c

Hope you are able to find it for me @mayavsworld

14. I think I'm going insane, I can't find this fanfic anywhere and I am CERTAIN I had it bookmarked. Please help. It was a very (VERY) heavy angst omegaverse fic with seriously great worldbuilding around the omegaverse elements. I don't remember the name exactly but it had something about deep waters in it, I think? Or maybe calm waters. 20 something chapters at the time I read it, might be more now. WWX was omega and very actively pro-omega rights, I think I remember he would help other omegas run away from abusive households which incensed the cultivation world against him even more in addition to all his canon-complaint doings. There was also WC forcing himself on WWX and I think a-Yuan was the result of that. I remember the wen still die, a-Yuan still gets adopted by LWJ, but I think WWX dies in his first life by committing suicide via Bichen. I remember vividly how WWX absolutely broke down when he realised (kinda) LWJ's feelings for him because it was an "oh, fuck, you're like all the others, just want to fuck a baby into me too?" moment for him.
FOUND! and the calm is deep where the quiet waters flow (Prologue – Index) (E, 303k, off-screen rape, oppression, violence, sexual assault, grief/mourning, unwanted pregnancy., A/B/O) It was reccomended by angstymdzsthoughts a while ago and is very good / I was also looking for it and the part of the title the asker remembered was what I needed to find it in my browser history so thanks

19. Hello! Thank you for all your hard work! I am looking for a fic in which after the sunshine campaign and possibly after Jin Zixuan died YLLZ is blackmailed into leaving cultivation world and he ends up at Jinlintai or Qinghe. I remember that someone was reading his letters (might have been Jin Guangyao) and sending him their own and threatening his shijie and Jin Ling so he complied with their demands. I was reminded of this fic by recently asked for ‘ whipstitch’ by curiositykilled.
FOUND? Always walked a very thin line by tucuxi (T, 22k, NHS & WWX, JYL & WWX, WangXian)
I can't find the fic itself but I remember one that sounds exactly like this. It was one where WWX surrended to the cultivation world (maybe after Qiongqi Pass?) and was sentenced to be held by the Nie and not cultivate. There's a moment where LXC asks WWX to help him play Clarity for NMJ and WWX eventually has to tell him about his core.

20. Hi, please help me with this.
There's this fic i read a while ago which is either a oneshot or is a short fic with a few chapters.
There's some disaster looming upon humans via a beast and to appease it, a human is given to this being as a sacrifice once every few years.
This time lan wangji is the one who got the lot to be a sacrifice, so he sets alone (i think lan huan may have accompanied him to the shore to send him off but I'm not entirey sure) on a boat on turbulent river waters to the cave this beast resides in. The tone of the fic is just like turbulent waters, grey and dark blues. Heavy. Grim.
Lan wangji arrives at his destination (a cave?) and sees a being breathing there with red eyes(I'm not sure about the description of the beast tbh but think this is it).
The beast is some type of dragon or is atleast partial dragon.
Nobody knows what the beast does to the human sacrifices so lan wangji do not know what to expect.
The beast somehow communicates with wangji what it wants with him (i don't know if the beast talks or if wangji is able to sense the beast's thoughts. 60% sure it is the latter)
The next details are muddled in my mind but the outline is similar to what follows.
The beast wants wangji to be a vessel for it. They have sex and wangji feels the beast as it is big. It deposits either an egg or it's energy into wangji for him to nurture it. That is the purpose the beast finds in these human sacrifices. Wangji is willing, self righteous as he is and as he knows this is what will help humans avoid disaster upon the hands of the beast. The baby will come out not as a human but like the beast.
The description of the act is not sexual for the sake of being sexual and it is not porn without plot. It is not rape or non con.
In the middle of the sex or after the sex, after the egg/energy is deposited in wangji the beast transforms. It is of course wei ying.
I think they arrive at an agreement out of love or out of the need to protect or out of respect. Both if them accept each other as partners.
The fic ends like that i think.
FOUND! burning bright by la_muerta (E, 4k, wangxian, dragon WWX, porn with plot, virgin sacrifice, light bondage, gags, mating cycles/in heat, mpreg, loss of virginity (via consensual monster fucking), size difference, happy ending)
