Breaking Down the Cinematic Techniques and Styles used in the 'CID' TV Show
Tumblr media
The long-running Indian television series 'CID' has enthralled audiences not just with its inventive plotlines and iconic characters but also with its use of cinematography and unique filmmaking styles. This article breaks down the distinctive cinematic techniques and styles that have become a staple in this beloved TV show.
Genre-Inspired Lighting
'CID' uses lighting to its advantage to create an atmosphere befitting of a crime drama. The use of low-key lighting, characterized by high-contrast shadows and hotspots, often contribute to the show's sense of mystery and suspense.
"'CID' excels in the use of low-key lighting, perfect for amplifying tension and suspense inherent in the crime genre."
Camera Movements and Angles
The series employs a variety of camera movements and angles to amplify its storytelling. Aerial shots have been used to establish the vastness of a crime scene, while close-ups put emphasis on the emotions and reactions of characters. Moreover, handheld movements are used during chase scenes, making the audience feel they're in the middle of the action.
"The ingenious implementation of camera movements and angles in 'CID' brings versatility and added depth to the narrative."
Pacing and Editing
'CID' has always stood out for its pacing. The editing style ensures a continuous escalation of tension right up to its climax. The use of cross-cutting, or parallel editing, contributes to the suspense, allowing audiences to keep track of multiple storylines simultaneously.
"Through skillful pacing and editing, 'CID' never fails to keep its audience gripped and engaged."
Sound Design
Sound plays a crucial role in 'CID'. Dramatic music heightens the suspense and tension during investigations and chase sequences. In contrast, softer tones underscore emotional moments, thereby making the series a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
"'CID' utilizes sound design to its advantage, guiding audience emotions and grounding the series' narrative."
Cinematic Storytelling
'CID' leans into the realm of cinematic storytelling with its drama-infused approach to crime investigation. The directors often employ techniques such as foreshadowing and red herrings to keep the audience guessing.
"The cinematic storytelling method used in 'CID' keeps the narrative enthralling, aiding the detective-style viewer engagement."
Set Design and Prop Use
The set design and utilization of props in 'CID' reflect a realistic representation of a crime investigation unit. The forensic lab, the use of vehicles and tech gadgets, and accurate representation of police work show the series's dedication to authenticity.
"The commitment of 'CID' to realism is evident in its thoughtfully designed sets and appropriate use of props."
Conclusion
'CID' is not just a television show – it's a canvas where distinctive storytelling blends with unparalleled cinematic techniques. The use of mood-setting lighting, dynamic camera movements and angles, calculated pacing and editing, immersive sound design, cinematic storytelling, and elaborate set design all contribute to making 'CID' a groundbreaking milestone in Indian television crime series.

Cockroach!
Tumblr media
Pavitr Prabhakar x f!reader
Summary: Reader is scared of roaches and accidentally finds one in the bathroom. Pavitr saves her + fluff <3 [used Google translate for Hindi words, sorry if it's wrong 😅] My boi has so less fics so i decided to do one myself '^_^ A/N: "N/n" means nickname
Tumblr media
"Paviiiiiii beta!", Maya auntie calls from the kitchen. "Can you please get the door? I'm busy."
"I got it, aunite!"
Pavitr opens the door to none other than his best friend and partner-in-crime, Y/n.
"Hey, N/n!", he pulls you into an embrace. You smile and return the sentiment, nuzzling his cheek before pulling away.
You remove your shoes outside and step in, as is custom in India, greeted with a playful pinch to your cheek by Maya auntie herself. You giggle. She was like a mother to you and you loved her as such.
"My beti, I haven't seen you in a week! How was your vacation?"
"It wasn't great without you, auntie. We just got home and I came to see you right away!"
"Suck up, suck up", mutters Pavitr in the background, gaining a playful slap to his head -courtesy of you.
"Did you do your exams well? I didn't have a chance to ask you before you left."
"I think I'll get an 'A', thanks to Pavitr's tutoring."
You watch him perk up out of the corner of your eyes as your praise.
The boy in question puffs out his chest, showing off his biceps from where he's leaning on the kitchen door frame. "Have no fear, Pavitr is here!"
You cup your mouth, laughing at his antics as Maya auntie playfully shakes her head in exasperation.
"Pavu can be like that sometimes", she chuckles, leaning into your ear in a stage whisper, "He missed you a lot, you know. Never shuts up about you. And, you know, beti, I keep asking him to already tell you but-"
"AUNTIE!"
You both blush as Pavitr hushes the old woman. She just winks at you. Of course, she knows.
The awkwardness is too much and Pavitr takes your hand, leading you into his room.
"Okay okay, enough talk, ladies. Y/n and I have some work to do -for a project!", he adds quickly when Maya auntie smirks at him. "I.. that-..auntie!"
She just giggles and ruffles his hair before walking back to the kitchen, leaving you both standing awkwardly next to each other, flustered.
Pavitr clears his throat. "She.. she was just kidding, I didn't-"
"It's okay", you say shyly.
You have feelings for him too but both of you are just too timid and would rather take it to your grave than admit it out loud.
He falls onto his bed and crosses one leg over the other, resting his head on his elbows as you sit next to him.
"So, what has my favourite person been upto in the meantime, leaving me all alone in this big, big city?"
You playfully roll your eyes. Dramatic little shit.
"You? Alone? Liar, the whole city is your friend."
He pouts, trying to look offended, but gives in and laughs.
You discuss about your project and he shows you some beta models of his brilliant ideas. You stare in awe at the young genius before you, playing with his "toys" as he explains them patiently.
"Hey, can I use your bathroom for a sec?", you ask when he finishes.
"Sure. Make yourself at home, N/n! I'll go sneak us some snacks", he winks, peeking from outside his door.
You shake your head, smiling. It's not that Maya auntie would refuse you snacks, but Pavitr convinced you there was a thrill in food-stealing and you couldn't deny it.
You shut the door, switch on the light and turn to the sink to wash your face when there it is -the thing that you most fear, the monster of your nightmares -a cockroach!
You scream bloody murder and run out of the bathroom, colliding into a hard wall. You look up realising it's actually Pavitr.
"You okay, N/n?"
"R-roach! Roach!", you point at the bathroom door frantically.
You stay in the corner as he goes in and stomps it dead, washing his hands before he comes to hug you.
"Deep breaths, deep breaths.. now exhale.. that's it.."
You cling onto him and follow his orders, grip loosing as your breathing slows down. His hand circle your waist, holding you firm and secure. You rest your head on his chest, calming down at the rhythmic beat of his heart.
You only belatedly realize it: you're hugging him, your chests touching each other's.
He seems to realizes it at the same time too, but instead of letting you go -like every other time- his hands tighten around your waist.
Pavitr catches your eyes with his own mesmerizing brown eyes; yours unable to leave him, entranced by his orbs as he slowly, gently leans in. Without noticing, you lean in too.
The gentle touch of soft lips spark fireworks in your body, your nerves tingling with the new feeling of his lips on yours. You could get used to this.
You panick a little it registers what you're doing, but Pavitr chases your lips, pressing against them firmly and you instantly calm down. He cups your face, cradling your neck as he brings your lips closer. It's his way of reassuring that you have nothing to fear.
"Hope I'm not interrupting anything."
You guys jump back as if burned when the door suddenly flies open. Maya auntie is standing there with a guiless face and a bright smile.
"I brought chai for you kids!", she says cheerfully and sets down the cups. "Did you hear that scream earlier? Where did it come from?"
"It, uh, it was me, auntie", you say, quite embarresed, running a hand through your matted up hair. "There was a cockroach in the bathroom and I got scared."
"Aww, poor child."
Pavitr looks away, blush blooming on his cheeks yet not obvious due to his skin tone. He rocks on his heels, running a hand through his hair. You know he too can still feel your lips on his from the way his eyes never leave you.
Maya auntie's eyes sparkle mischievously as she smiles and goes into the bathroom, finding the toy roach and throwing it into the trash can.
She smirks under her breath and washes her hands, sighing as she mutters in amusement.
"Oh, the things an old lady gotta do.."

I’m having too much fun with my little head cannon list so here’s x-men characters I head cannon as being different races
Mystique- she’s desi, specifically from India. Her og design is based of the Hindi goddess kali as well so it really works. Also her skull/gem/forehead accessory thing (is it a part of her? It’s so unclear) is reminiscent of a bindi. Also imagine her white dress look as a saree!
Pyro- he’s already Australian just let him be aboriginal as well. Plus his skull face tattoo could go from being just plain black into a really cool traditional design. There’s also a big aboriginal history with the control of fire. From fire stick burning to keep vegetation healthy to traditional fire dances.
Rouge- African American. It wouldn’t change her original character but it would add on to the marginalization of her mutant identity, her southern identity, and make her hair mutation that much cooler (because fuck the revamp I’m still on the different colored sections of her hair having different textures as well because that’s cool as hell)
Nightcrawler- he’s destiny and mystiques son so he’d kinda have to be half Indian and half Austrian for that to work but they also messed with his dna so he’d look like azazel so genetics don’t really matter. People often forget that he was raised rromani, he has a Roma identity, he speaks the language he follows the culture the whole shabang. Let him be more Romani
On a side note. Amanda sefton/jimamine szardos and meggan puceanu should be dark skinned. Or at the very least not blue eyed white girls with blonde hair. They’re Romani too- and that’s cannon. At least they’re pretty okay with scarlet witch and quicksilver about this (though their kids are often extremely whitewashed still)
Banshee- this is just me projecting because I want representation but I’m making him Irish traveler/ pavee. People don’t know who the fuck we are and outside of like a tv show about Irish crime there’s legit no pavee characters. Banshee is Irish so he’s getting hit with the beam.
Okay but despite my fun little headcannons the x-men have been so good for diversity and inclusion through representation in all sorts of categories: racial, religious, sexuality, gender, disability, I just love to se it.

eisuke ichinomiya x desi!reader headcanons !!
im so bored so here are some headcanons bec i love being desi
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
• he hates it when he has to wait and initially when you started dating you tried your best to be on time whenever he paged you but as your relationship progressed, its game over. whenever u have to go out, you ALWAYS leave at the the desi time and he slowly got so used to it, the one and only time punctual eisuke was late to events.
• eisuke has a massive sweet tooth so when you first made him kheer, he absolutely loved it although his only words were ‘not bad’. He definitely asks you to make it again so you feed him other ‘mithai’ (sweets in urdu/hindi) like gulab jamun, rasgullay, JALEBI etc and he loves it so much.
• you make him desi food from time to time and actually requests it like you him ask ‘eisuke what do you want for dinner today?’ and he just says ‘you made nihari last time, it was good. make it again’ he finds it very flavourful.
• he’s very familiar with other cultures since he’s a businessman and often interacts with foreign businessmen. he knows about the clothes and customs of your country. imagine eisuke in kurta or sherwani EISUKE IN A KURTA A BLACK KURTA AT THAT (i would actually die). Whenever you go to family events, you always wear traditional clothes and once eisuke is invited to them, he initially just wears his suit but after some time he starts to indulge you and actually wears your traditional clothes.
• he finds it very sexy when you talk and swear in your mother language.
• eisuke is multilingual (as its mentioned in the story) so if he doesnt know your mother langauge he would DEFINITELY learn and boy his pronunciation would be so good (thats a perfectionist for you)
• he says he hates bollywood movies because theyre so extra but thats a lie. whenever u play something like ‘kabhi khushi kabhi gham’ or ‘kal ho na ho’ he always watches it with you because he’s intrigued but ALWAYS says ‘this movie is so bad i wonder why you waste time watching this stuff’
• you go around singing bollywood songs or songs in your mother tongue around the penthouse and he just enjoys it so much but he definitely wont say it out loud
• eisuke was FLABBERGASTED when you told him or rather showed him a desi wedding like why is everyone wearing such fancy clothes ??? and he’s even more surprised when he finds out there’s actually three days to a wedding and even more pre wedding events.
• he loves it when you wear mehndi on your hands, he sees mehndi as something that adorns your hand and whenever u apply it, he brings your hand up to his face and smells it because he loves thr scent.
• when you told him about all your family and by that i mean family on your mother’s and father’s side, he has to do a double take because why the fuck do you have SO many cousins? he’s trying to keep up but there’s just so many.
• your parents love him more than you. they literally said it to your face ‘oh my, such a handsome boy, how did you ever end up with our incompetent daughter’ you cannot convince me that this wont happen.
• baba asks you to teach him bhangra and other desi dance steps and you, ota and baba have the time of your life dancing to chammak challo and nach punjaban in the penthouse lounge and eisuke just looks at you like youre comitting a crime
a little something for myself bec im a self indulgent bitch (not exactly a desi headcanon but i wanted to add this)
• every eid you spend with him, he makes sure to spoil you thoroughly. he gives you so much eidi (literally) like he straight up handed you car keys once and went ‘eid mubarak ___, i know you’ve been waiting for your eidi’ and then he just smirks while you think what did you do to deserve so much. he enjoys eid festivities with you and eid ul fitr is his favourite eid.

Since Hollywood is on strike (take down the greedy studio bastards!) and I saw a post calling people to check out non-American media - let's start a rec list!
as far as I know these are on Netflix (I don't have any other streaming subscriptions at the moment so I can't rec anything from the others) and might be available online *elsewhere* with a little internet magic.
La casa de papel (also known as Money Heist) A group of criminals are robbing the Spanish Mint - chaos ensues. I think everyone and their grandmother has seen this by now but still. I loved this show - I stayed up until stupid o'clock because i HAD to know what was going to happen next and how they were going to get out of the shit they'd gotten themselves into. 5 seasons. La casa de las flores (also known as House of flowers) Think telenovelas/soap operas. It's unhinged, it's funny, it's a little queer (mlm and wlw). Long lost children, affairs, Big Family Secrets, drag queens - what more could you ask for?? 3 seasons, a special episode (la case de las flores el funeral), and a film (la casa de las flores la pelicula)
Anne+ (film + 1 of 2 seasons tv show - it originated as a webseries so the episodes are pretty short but Netflix deleted the second season) The life and loves of Anne - a queer millennial living in Amsterdam.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Queer (wlw) Bollywood film. A friend recced it to me once. I had never watched a Bollywood film in my life, didn't know anything about the genre, but still enjoyed it. It's a drama. Don't go into this thinking it's the Hindi version of the L word though or you will be disappointed.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Another queer (mlm) bollywood film my friend recced me. It's a little more "blatant" than the one I mentioned before (this one is from 2020, the other 2019) and it's more of a comedy This one is not on Netlfix - it used to be on Amazon prime but I don't know if it still is. I found it *elsewhere* though with better subtitles than on amazon.
Kalifat This is a Swedish show about a young girl getting pulled into the world of extremist Islam, a young mother who already is in the kalifat (and wants to leave) and a (female) journalist trying to help her. It's intense but really good - and kind of scary how easy it is fall down an extremist internet rabbit hole.
Meskina Dutch romantic comedy about a Dutch/Moroccan woman in her 30s who is still single and her family play matchmaker. Featuring one of the funniest women in the Netherlands (Soundos el Ahmadi - who is also a stand up comedian and her shows are on netflix too)
Isi & Ossi German romantic comedy film about a rich girl who wants to go to culinary school but her father won't let her, so she pretends to be in a relationship with a poor guy who is also a boxer to piss off her parents.
Family business Completely unhinged French comedy series about a guy who turns his family's butchershop into a shop that sells weed - because he heard weed was about to be legalised in France. Really funny - 3 seasons.
Lupin French crime/heist show - but from the POV of the thief. Based on/inspired by the Arsène Lupin books. With Omar Sy. IT'S SO GOOD! 2 seasons, season 3 coming in October.
Dirty Lines Dutch (kind of) comedy about a woman who takes a job at a sex phone line.
reblog and add your own!

Domestic Violence is still not the heinous crime in India..!
According to the National Commission for Women (NCW), the number of domestic violence complaints in India has fluctuated since 2019:
2019: 2,960 complaints out of 19,730 total cases
2020: 5,304 complaints out of 23,722 total cases, during the COVID-19 lockdown
2021: 6,633 complaints out of 30,864 total cases
2022: 6,970 complaints out of 30,957 total cases
2023: 6,304 complaints out of 28,811 total cases
According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), 29.3% of married Indian women between the ages of 18 and 49 have experienced domestic or sexual violence, and 3.1% of pregnant women in that age group have experienced physical violence. However, only a small percentage of victims seek help
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA) of 2005 allows women to seek help from a domestic violence protection officer for dowry harassment.
Amruta Subhash, a renowned actress in Marathi and Hindi Cinema, gained acclaim for her work in Lust Stories 2, Gully Boy, and Bombay Begums. In a roundtable discussion, she shared her experience of being beaten up by her on-screen husband in a TV Show. Despite her discomfort, the producer insisted on the scenes for higher TRP. This revelation made her realize the sad reality of society where violence against women boost ratings.
If I were to share my observations, a man's mother would discredit a girl for rejecting him during the procedures of an arranged marriage in a big city like Ahmedabad. If this infuriated him, he would then be sure to label her as being out of her ethnic group. It's all too typical to hear girls ask for too much in marriage, so why can't she? Why are you supporting these girls if you don't think they meet your criteria? Many illiterate girls are willing to assist you with domestic chores. They are unable to accept the fact that the girl of their choice will reject them and they do not want to make any concessions. Even Nevertheless, they live in a time when women follow their hearts.
Middle-aged men and women preach to girls and their parents in community WhatsApp groups and on social media pages to be cultural and marry middle-class boys because they are cultural. Is it? Therefore, there need to be an end to middle class families' incidents of dowry harassment and domestic abuse.  Regretfully, such drivel and so-called social activism are unchecked.
We can expect the worst from son if his mother treats the girl in this manner!

Wahaj Ali to the Rescue…
I have been in a Kdrama slump having barely watched 3 dramas so far. Dropped 2 and one is ongoing. I have been watching a lot of crime and dark series in British and American TV. Farzi is the only Hindi series I have watched in this new year and I loved it 😍
I have been craving good series from the subcontinent and asked a few folks on twitter to recommend Pakistani dramas. I haven’t watched them in last 7-8 years. So after 3 dramas, I started watching Tere Bin and got totally bowled over by Wahaj Ali’s Murtasim!
Tumblr media
So I hunted for more dramas of his and am currently watching Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha which is also currently airing and his 2021 drama Ishq Jalebi. I’m so impressed by his acting, screen presence, charisma and charm with a capital C! The current craze behind him is reminiscent of the craze behind Fawad Khan a decade ago when people discovered Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hain. There is none like Fawad and he is an eternal favourite, but I’m totally falling for each and ever character that Wahaj is essaying with such finesse and panache.
Be it the proud and arrogant but hopelessly in love Murtasim
Tumblr media
Be it the soft hearted, reticent Saad who harbours one-sided love for Maheer (literally watching MHPT only for him, cause the show is an utter disaster of a melodrama that reminds me why I don’t watch many series from the sub continent)
Tumblr media
Or my favourite character of his right now - Basim from Ishq Jalebi. Basim is so flawed - he is immature, impulsive, stubborn, a tad selfish, sometimes a man child and even carries an inferiority complex but once he realises he is in love with Bela , he fights for it like no one’s business. His comic timing and dialogue delivery is impeccable - his dynamic with his parents is best part of the drama after his lovely, soft chemistry with the female lead Mahida. Her soft spoken, caring , mature Bela is the perfect foil to Basim. The drama is also so wholesome with fun characters that there isn’t a single moment of boredom! It reminded me of my favourite Marathi show Eka Lagnachi Goshta (The story of a marriage).
Tumblr media
Wahaj Ali is playing 3 absolutely different characters in the 3 dramas of his that am watching simultaneously and I cannot believe it’s the same actor. The mannerisms, the voice modulation, the gait , the look is completely different. That’s the hallmark of a great actor ! Colin Firth, Fawad Khan, Kim Seon Ho were my biggest actor crushes that gave the most epic characters in history of TV viewing and now Wahaj has entered this elite list. Actors when they are on my screen, I can’t take my eyes off the screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wahaj Ali has saved my 2023 TV viewing cause I have seen his filmography and his drama arc is so similar to Fawad’s that I can’t wait to watch his dramas. Fawad’s Ashar & Zaroon, Wahaj’s Murtasim and Basim are all heavily flawed characters and yet both these actors have made us ladies swoon and fall in love with them thanks to their amazing acting abilities and effortless performance. It’s an added bonus that his voice , his mischievous smile and the look in his eyes when he is in love is totally swoon worthy!
Tumblr media
So until I find the right Kdrama again, this space will be reserved to obsess over the awesomeness of Wahaj Ali 😉

“Hi, pretty,” Jas had to stop herself from physically cringing at the name that just slipped out of Amina Park’s lips. It still baffles her that this woman, despite how many people would describe her as the scariest woman alive, is also the kindest person that she has ever met (aside from her mom, she would be jealous). It would be a crime to physically cringe in front of her—even if it was because of his own son’s doings. “How’s your vacation in New York, so far?”
Jas smiled at her. Terrible, She wanted to say. She has already been in New York for 5 days and she hasn’t written anything that didn’t allude to Tobi hurting her and it was beginning to frustrate her. She has writing credits for almost all of Midnight Covey’s most romantic songs. For god’s sake she’s written songs about two weddings at this point—and now she can’t write anything that doesn’t say “Midnight Covey’s lead guitarist just fucked me over and I hate it” all over it.
“Good,” she resorted to lying. “I’ve been writing songs with a friend po. So I’ve been trying to be as productive while I’m still here.”
“Well, New York does have the feel to it, no?” she smiled, looking down on the city lights below the high rise restaurant of the business connoisseur’s choice. “It’s a little chaotic though. But it’s fun naman, right?”
“It is,” Jas replied shortly, fighting the urge to move to try and shake away the awkward tension between the both of them. It seemed like Amina Park knew something that she didn’t and she was itching to ask but it was too embarrassing to ask for the elephant in the room to be addressed.
“You did very well in the Aurora Festival, I heard. Bianca has been talking about your performance non-stop. At this point I won’t be too surprised if she tells us she wants to pursue music one of these days. She can sing very well pa naman,” Amina Park chuckles. “That kid adores you very much.”
Jas didn’t know how to respond to that. Thank you? Mas talented po ang mga anak n’yo? Every response she had in her head sounded wrong so she chose to do what she has been doing since dinner began—just smile.
God, it seemed like Amina Park was waiting for her to open the topic up. Even though she wanted to, she would very much rather throw herself off the deck and fall 101 stories down to the busy streets of NYC. She had fallen for her son embarrassingly hard and the fact that the moment his ex girlfriend—probably the only one everyone knew of—showed up, he didn’t seem to give a flying fuck about her anymore. Falling 101 stories down to the busy streets of NYC would’ve probably hurt less because she would be dead on impact. But falling in love with Tobias Park was the one she’s unfortunately experienced, something that she needs to endure for as long as it’s there.
And sitting here with his mom only adds up on the pain that she already has to endure.
“My other kid adores you too,” she finally blurts out. “He looks so much like his dad it’s almost disgusting to see him look at you with heart eyes when we had dinner a few weeks ago. I felt like I was looking at the younger Alonzo flirting with another woman.”
“He didn’t seem to be that way when Kashiana came back,” she sighed, avoiding the older woman’s gaze.
“I would have to apologize for not teaching my son to be sensitive enough,” she hummed. “I wasn’t around them most of the time. They practically raised Bianca for me, which is embarrassing to admit. I’m slowly trying to make it up to them, though.”
“It’s really not your fault, Ma’am,”
“Jas, it’s Tita,” she chuckled. “C’mon it’s not that hard to call me Tita. Hindi naman kita empleyado.”
“Hindi n’yo naman po kasalanan ‘yon, Tita,” Jas repeats herself, trying not to make it seem obvious that she wanted the ground to open and swallow her whole.
“Oh believe me, pretty,” she smiled upon hearing her say it. “I’ve been absent for more times than not to be responsible for that.”
“But that’s not the point I’m trying to make,” she sighed. “I’m not going to apologize for what he did, but I do take accountability on why he is like that. Even so, alam n’ya ang tama at mali. He did what he did, and he’ll have to face the consequences of his actions. But Tobi is one of the most strong-willed people I know and when you get back, I hope you give him a chance to apologize and better himself.”
“We’re just friends naman po,” Jas replied, feeling her chest squeeze upon saying it. Damn. It still stung to say it, despite how much Amina Park tried to explain that Tobi felt remorse for what he did. “He doesn’t have to do all that.”
“Louis is in love with you, Jas,” Amina Park blurts out, finally. “He texted me a few days ago asking for help. He said he was in love with you. And this is as much help that I could give him. Now, pretty, tell me, are you in love with Louis?”
She could feel tears beginning to trickle in her eyes as she looked down on her almost empty glass of wine that she has been swirling around for a while now. God. It’s so embarrassing to cry in front of Amina Park right now. Get it together, Jas.
“Jacynthe?” Amina calls softly as she reaches for her hand. “It’s okay if you aren’t.”
“The problem is I am,” she responds quickly, voice breaking as she looks up to Amina Park, embarrassingly.
Fuck it. She is in love with Tobi and he is such an asshole. The fact that she allowed this set up for so long to te point that she hates herself for liking him in the first place when she should’ve just stayed exactly where she was. She hates that she enjoyed toeing the line too much to the point that she did end up falling. Hard.
“Why do you think it’s a problem, pretty?” Amina Park asked, concerned as she squeezed her hand.
“Tobi is never going to love me half as much as I do,” she sighed honestly. “And I don’t know how to see life in the same light ever again without your son. It’s cliche and sick and twisted that I rely on your son so much for love that he can’t give.” Jacynthe was just word vomiting at this point, confessing her deep (and also disgusting but also undying) affection to somebody’s mom.
Amina Park on the other hand, has a huge grin on her face, as if proud of herself that she is finally seeing progress between her son and her prospective daughter-in-law.
“It’s okay to cry,” she coos, handing her a piece of paper tissue to wipe her tears that she somehow managed to not fall and drip on her very expensive glass of red wine. “I cried too when I first admitted that I was in love with Alonzo too. And I used to hate that man with every fiber of my being.”
“I hope you two figure it out once you’re back in QC,” she squeezed her hand one more time as Jas nodded. “I will surely give him an earful for hurting you and going out with the senator’s daughter. You can count on me with that.”

The Legacy of 'CID': How the Show Shaped the Indian Television Crime Genre
On its premiere in 1998, 'CID' (Crime Investigation Department) emerged as India's first ever fully investigative series, setting in motion a trend that would forever influence the country's television crime genre. Over the years, 'CID' has cultivated a distinct legacy integral to Indian television. In this article, we analyze how this seminal series has shaped the dynamics of the Indian television crime genre.
Pioneer of Crime Investigation Drama
When 'CID' started, the landscape of Indian television was very different, dominated largely by family dramas and mythology-based series. 'CID' broke new ground as the first criminal investigative show that delved into police procedures and criminal investigations.
"As India's maiden investigative series, 'CID' laid the groundwork for a genre that would flourish in the years to come."
Powerful Characters and Narratives
'CID' mastered the art of crime storytelling, creating powerful characters and gripping narratives. The iconic characters, such as ACP Pradyuman, Senior Inspector Abhijeet, and Inspector Daya, became household names. Their chemistry, deep-rooted brotherhood, unique mannerisms, and catch-phrases resonated with the audience, bringing a level of authenticity that was largely unknown in the genre.
"The creation of memorable and beloved characters in 'CID'served to humanize the often impersonal crime genre and allowed for deeper audience connection."
Reinventing Storytelling in Crime Genre
'CID' consistently innovated with its storytelling. The cases were complex, the villains were often surprising, and there were never any loose ends. Each episode provided closure with the criminal being brought to justice, reinforcing the notion of good prevailing over evil — an important aspect that appealed to the Indian audience.
"'CID' revolutionized crime genre storytelling in Indian television with its episodic narrative offering closure in each episode, a rarity in the genre at that time."
Setting Production Standards
CID raised the bar of production standards in the crime genre. As the longest-running crime series in India, it consistently improved its production quality, involving more dynamic cinematography, varied locations, and refined special effects, which was unusual for Indian television at the time.
"The high production benchmarks set by 'CID' challenged the understanding of what was expected from the production of a television series."
Interlacing Mystery with Emotion
One of CID's hallmarks was its ability to seamlessly blend mystery with emotion. Each episode offered an emotionally charged narrative that went hand in hand with the mystery at its crux. This unique trait added a level of depth to the storytelling rarely seen in Indian television crime dramas before.
"'CID' mastered the unique skill of blending high-stakes mystery with deep human emotion, adding a relatable and engaging facet to the genre."
Conclusion
For over 20 years, 'CID' remained a beloved fixture in Indian households, shaping the crime genre in ways that are still felt today. It pioneered the trend, introduced India to iconic characters, transformed storytelling structures, raised production quality, and above all, skillfully weaved emotions into the mystifying world of crime. There's no denying that 'CID' left an indelible mark on Indian television and played a pivotal role in shaping the crime genre that continues to evolve today.

do you have any George hcs (sfw and/or NSFW is you want to) that you haven't shared yet? You don't have to share if you don't wanna <3
Alright, sadly I'm at work rn so I can't do NSFW (but send me an ask later and I will ;>) so here's
SFW George hcs!
(Tw: slight smoking mention, slight gun mention)
🚕 The only one out of the puppets that has an actual legal and valid driver's license.
🚕 He's also the best mechanic in the city somehow?? Like it's gotten to the point if Gordon can't fix his own car he brings it to George.
🚕 When the studio started its repairs, to help bring in money, George started up a small actual taxi business as well as a small car repair shop.
🚕 The only puppet who swore BEFORE the studio went under, and smoked. On Al's request, he kept his smoking away from the other puppets as to not influence them. They all knew he did it though. Puppet lungs don't suffer from the same side effects as human lungs.
🚕 Will get road rage. Has never participated in out of car physical road rage, but he's not afraid to flip off someone being a dickwad on the road.
🚕 Knows all the best hole in the wall shops and restaurants in the city.
🚕 Can speak Arabic, Hindi, and Chinese!
🚕 Has and will give rides to drunk people for free. As long as they get home safe, it ain't a big deal to him.
🚕 Would also give rides to employees who were walking home during snow or heavy rain. Employees would get rides home if they didn't feel safe going by themselves
🚕 Has been in fist fights with at least 2 tow truck drivers over parking
🚕 No one, not even Al, knew this, but he knows how to use a gun, and kept one in his taxi. He hated that he had to have it, but he wasn't going to risk the safety of his passengers by not having one. Gordon found out, and understood, not getting mad at him. He traded the stenographer for the gun, as it's easier to disable a threat with it without causing gruesome damage. George feels a lot better about it now.
🚕 Being the one most exposed to the outside world he knew how bad the crime was starting to get as the show started going under. It wasn't until he was exposed to violent Television that he really understood the extent of it. Not many George's became unfriendly because of this. They built a bit of resilience to it.
Enjoy!! <3

15-week learning review
Tumblr media
Reading and Writing (15 out of 15 weeks)
Since I reached out to Hindi speakers in search of penpals in a couple of places (namely Conversation Exchange and Slowly app) I've found some interesting people who are patient enough to correspond with me using Devanagari and bookish language. It's been quite fun and I've been able to reply to emails quite regularly. Both my reading and writing skills have improved and I've learned many useful phrases for discussing opinions etc.
Listening (8 out of 15 weeks)
I found an interesting podcast for Hindi learners, All About India Insider Tales, where they make short about 15-minute episodes about Indian history in both English and Hindi. They have a Patreon through which a listener can download the full script of each episode in both Hindi and English for a small monthly fee. This is not an ad, I was just so happy to find this resource that I need to share it. I've also listened to some episodes of विश्व चर्चित हत्याएँ and Indian Crime Story but so far I haven't found the perfect true crime podcast in Hindi or Hinglish - recommendations welcome!
Watching (7 out of 15 weeks)
Another, and completely free resource I want to share is STARTALK Hindi Audio-Visual project which is a collection of 42 videos with complete downloadable .pdf scripts in Hindi. These videos are based on real-life situations and show naturally spoken Hindi, sometimes mixed with English and local languages. I've also watched three Hindi films, finished Mismatched and started to watch Taj Mahal 1989 on Netflix.
Grammar (6 out of 15 weeks)
Because of regular correspondence, I have had less time for grammar books. One of my pen pals shared a great resource, however, for both reading and grammar: a vast collection of online textbooks by the Indian NCERT - National Council of Education Research and Training. There are Hindi and Urdu textbooks starting from grade 1 upwards and there are also adult education materials downloadable as pdf. Speaking (2 out of 15 weeks)
I've spoken to myself in Hindi almost every day, but only on two occasions, I have spoken with a native Hindi speaker. I'm still seriously considering finding a new Hindi tutor on iTalki. I just got a new job and getting adjusted to it makes me super tired on the weeknights at the moment, so this plan is on pause.

Kohrra Review
Tumblr media
July 22, 2023
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Seven years back, we got a glimpse of the downtrodden state of Punjab through the film, Udta Punjab. The drugs, the violence, the chaos. It was a stark departure from the gorgeous pinds, ganne ke khet, and an overall romanticized version of Punjab we had grown accustomed to through the movies. We still see those sprawling fields in Kohrra, but now there is an ominous air over it, a fog of criminality that refuses to disappear. Netflix’s latest series is a crime thriller that follows two police officers, Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky) and Amarpal Garundi (Barun Sobti), as they attempt to solve the murder of a groom, just days prior to his wedding. Their personal and professional lives intertwine as the search for the culprit reveals much about the dismal state of society.
It is no surprise that one of the writers of Udta Punjab is a co-creator on this series. Sudip Sharma, also known for Amazon’s critically acclaimed show, Paatal Lok, has the knowledge and writing prowess to explore the gritty depths of Punjab. Along with director Randeep Jha, and co-writers, Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia, they create a universe that relies heavily on its atmosphere. From the Punjabi dialect spoken by the actors to the stark cinematography, they strive for authenticity.
Though it gets straight into the main plot, the crime being discovered within the first few minutes of the first episode, the story is slow to unravel. The exposition of the characters happens over the course of the series as each episode reveals a little more about their personal lives. The narrative is predictable. But, there is an unpredictability within that predictability. Many aspects of the mystery are easily guessed early on, but they are just loose threads. How these threads are woven together to form this murderous situation is the suspense we relish.
But what sets Kohrra apart, is the way it uses the mystery as background fodder for a poignant story of parental abuse and generational trauma. We see a whole generation of youngsters stifled due to the misplaced frustration of their elders. Happy suffers the inattention of his father, leading him down a treacherous path. Garundi is victim to the emotional blackmail of his brother and sister in law. Nimrat faces mental torture at the hands of her rigid father. Paul feels suppressed by the extreme beliefs of his father and as a result, Liam struggles due to Paul’s pain. The common thread here is the existence of parental figures who are insistent on imposing their beliefs from a generation of the past on their children of today. It is a bleak commentary on familial structures in modern society amid the chaotic crime scene in Punjab.
The brilliant writing along with the great performances bring these characters and themes to life. Suvinder Vicky and Barun Sobti do a commendable job leading the show. It’s remarkable to see how Barun Sobti imbibes this rustic Punjabi character, so different from any role he has portrayed thus far. This may be his fourth release of the year, but it’s definitely his best performance of them all. Suvinder Vicky is a revelation. Despite a career lasting almost two decades, with a few forays into Hindi entertainment, he is largely unknown to an Indian audience outside Punjab. This series has not only brought to light his nuanced acting, but has also catapulted him into belated stardom. While these two actors lead the way, it is the supporting cast that keeps the series afloat. Harleen Sethi is terrific in the role of Balbir’s disgruntled, angry and depressed daughter, Nimrat. Rachel Shelly beautifully portrays Clara’s agony of losing a son in a nation foreign to her. And there are many more actors that do a tremendous job bringing emotion and authenticity to their roles.
As the series comes to a close, I find myself wondering, are we supposed to like these characters? Barring Nimrat and Clara, my heart doesn’t ache for anyone. Instead, I feel disgusted by some of these people and their despicable actions. But, I believe that is the intention. These grey characters are not meant to be likeable. They are instead meant to be seen as an imperfect part of an imperfect society. A society that is slowly drowning in its own evils. But, as they each have their own form of redemption, we experience satisfaction, that in this burning society, there is a glimmer of hope. Just like its characters, Kohrra isn’t perfect. It is slow, it is predictable. But as the mystery takes a backseat, an important commentary on society emerges that makes the series a riveting watch.

A Jihad for Love is produced by Halal Films, in association with the Sundance Documentary Film Fund,Channel 4 (UK),ZDF (Germany),Arte (France-Germany),Logo (US) & SBS Australia. The director & producer Parvez Sharma & co-producer Sandi Dubowski raised more than a million dollars over a 6 years period to make the film.
In an interview with The NY Times,Parvez Sharma said that he "would shoot touristy footage on the first 15 minutes & the last 15 minutes of a tape", with interviews for documentary in between, to avoid having his footage seized at customs. He compiled 400 hours of footage from a dozen countries ranging from Iraq to Pakistan to the UK.The nature of the work placed him at considerable personal risk.He adopted hardcore guerrilla film-making tactics, pretending to be a tourist in one country,a worker for an AIDS charity in another country.Wherever he went,he asked his queer friends to keep copies of footage and destroy the tapes once he had successfully smuggled the masters out of the country.
During his filmmaking Parvez traveled several countries including Pakistan, Iraq, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, USA, UK, Turkey, France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa,[...].
Interviews
In an interview with NY Times magazine,Parvez Sharma said,"Being gay and Muslim myself,I knew that this film had to be about us all coming out— as Muslims. It's about claiming the Islam that has been denied to us." With a target audience of "faithful Muslims," he undertook a variety of outreach tactics, including leafleting mosques, blanketing MySpace, screening in Astoria for 15 key progressive Muslim leaders. In an interview to Der Spiegel, Sharma explained the significance of the title: "I'm not looking at jihad as battle.I'm looking at the greater jihad in Islam, which is the jihad as the struggle with the self.I also thought it was really compelling to take a word that only has one connotation for most -- to take that, reclaim it and put it in the same phrase as love, which is universal.I really think it explains it very well.
Film Screening
A Jihad for Love first premiered in Toronto International Film Festival(TIFF) in September 2007.At its premier, the director was given a security guard for safety reasons. After this film festival A Jihad for Love got huge applaud internationally.A Jihad for Love film premiered as the opening film of Panorama Documente of the Berlin Film Festival in February 2008.

Popularity
A Jihad for Love film's sale and broadcast on NDTV, South Asia's largest network in 2008 would have a "remarkable" impact on this LGBTQ cause. "NDTV's broadcast has in effect made the film available to over one billion viewers in India,Bangladesh,Pakistan, & large portions of the Middle East and Africa. The various distributors and their Total Rating Points in European television, the Indian/South-Asian sale with its claimed footprint of 15 billion viewers, the theatrical release & the purportedly large numbers of Netflix viewers made the filmmakers and the TRP experts arrive at a number of 8 million total viewers calculated over a period of four years for this documentary.
International Muslim Dialogue Project
Immediately after the film's theatrical launch around the USA,Parvez & Sandi launched the International Muslim Dialogue Project on 2008.The aim of the project was to organize screenings of the film in Muslim Capitals.Sharma called it the "Underground Network Model" of film distribution. He invented this model sending unmarked DVD's of the film with friends & colleagues to Muslim capitals across the world with full permission to sell pirated copies. Some of the boldest were Beirut,Cairo,Karachi, eight cities in Indonesia & Kuala Lumpur
The film was screened privately screened in Iran,Palestine,Bangladesh and Somalia.
