Since I November I have been trying to watch as many magical anime as a can from oldest to newest because I'm obsessed with evolution. That and I want to do an analysis on how magical anime went from Sally the Witch, to Sailor Moon, to Precure and so on. In addition I' also give my opinion on which ones I enjoyed the most or least. For this post though I'll just go over the 60s and 70s magical girls I've seen. Some elements I'm looking out for in the "magical girl formula" are: 1. Animal Sidekick, 2. Transformation sequence, 3. main romance subplot, 4 saving the day, 5. Special Attacks, 6. Becomes someone older, 7. Becomes an Idol, 8. Magical powers.
First is Sally the Witch - 1966
Sally the Witch fits into both 4 and 8. She has magical powers, she does end up using them to both pull pranks, make life easier, or save the day. As a show it's pretty good. It reminds me a lot of Bewitched and seemed to be a huge influence. There's a crow character who pretends to be her younger brother in human form but I'm not sure if he counts as an animal sidekick. The anime has a lot dated moments and some I wasn't a fan of. I alsp had a hard time getting used to some of the 60s designs of characters. Unfortunately, I was not able to watch all episodes in order so that was a bummer. Other than that, Sally was a pioneer for more magical girls to come.
I was not able to finds episodes of Himitsu no Akko-chan, Mako-chan or Majokko Tickle but if anyone knows how I could watch some episodes lmk.
Princess Knight - 1967
I really liked this one and I think this is my favorite 60s anime. The manga is from 1953 so this technically might be the first magical girl. It doesn't follow a whole lot of the magical girl formula but she does save the day. The main character, Sapphire, has a guardian angel name Tink who could sort count as the animal side kick and she has a horse that helps her out on her quest. Sadly I was not able to see the entire subbed series and I am considering just watching the dub to finish the series off. Overall though, this show was very girl boss for the 60s and was genuinely entertaining.
Marvelous Melmo - 1971
Marvelous Melmo is another show I really enjoyed and made me emotional at times. After Melmo's mom dies in a car accident, she gives her red and blue candy to tranform into someone younger or older. It also gives her the ability to transform into animal. And she does use said powers from the candy to save the day. The show itself was very educational on evolution and human development. I was several episodes in when I realized I was watching a version that was redubbed by a whole new cast of voice actors in Japan, back in 1998. I'm curious to see how the original 70s version was. Aside from that, I highly recommend this one.
Next is Cutie Honey 1973
Okay, I will be honest, I haven't seen Cutie Honey in a long time and need to re-watch it. If I find anymore elements to the magical girl formula for Cutie Honey, I'll make another post about it. What I do remember is that she does have a transformation sequence, she saves the day, and can also transform into someone older. I think their is an episode where she shape shifts into an old lady. In some ways, her heroic and fearless character reminds me of Princess Knight and I look forward to rewatching the series.
Majokko Meg-Chan - 1974
Majokko Meg-chan had a lot of similarities to Sally the Witch. Meg is a witch in training, she wants to get better at her magic. In terms of the magical girl formula, she has magical powers and does use them in scenarios to save the day or make life easier. In all honesty this was my least favorite and I couldn't finish the series. The show tries to teach Meg that family is important and that her family in the human world really loves her. But then Meg's younger siblings pull pranks on her...I don't want to go on a tangent because I'm sure there are people who really enjoyed it. It just wasn't for me. I did love the theme songthough, it's so damn catchy.
Hana no Lun Lun - 1979
Only 3 or 4 episodes were available for me to watch but I really wish I could finish the series. Lun Lun has two animal sidekicks, a talking cat and dog. Due to being the flower child, she is able to use flowers to change into different outfits. I can't remember many episodes where she saves the day but the show does follow the trope of Lun Lun having a kind heart forming friendships with the people she meets.

himitsu no aipri episode 1 (a week late)
it's been so long since I've written about a priseries (or any other idol) show... I'm realizing that I legit didn't think I'd ever get the chance again. I got tired of doing it before because I felt like I was either complaining too much (planet) or just happy abt everything that was happening (primagi) and thus had nothing interesting to say either way, but ever since watching aipri on sunday I've been looking forward to this... I think I'm just happy about new idol anime content after such a long drought tbh but it's something good that aipri has already brought us, no matter what you or I think of anything else about it.
I missed the first 5 minutes bc I was reading bad fanfiction in bed to wake up (nigh daily routine) and totally forgot abt aipri... then I did remember and had to sprint to my computer, but the stream kept stopping so I missed some critical stuff throughout. I liked the ep okay, but maybe actually seeing all of it will improve it?
ohhh ok it starts off with those cute lemon coords in the op. actually this does help, those coords are easily my favs that I've seen in aipri so far. esp Mitsuki's blue one is sooo cute... I am saying this as a person that buys every single blue gingham item of clothing I come across though haha. I will say that the coord & dance totally don't match the sort of sweeping fairytale (just mistyped that as dairytale. hm) majesty that the bgm and voiceover is going for, but...
oh, I didn't know that Mitsuki had a snippet of performance in here. I've seen it in gameplay videos already, I like it ok---wow, it's already over.
the way Mitsuki is pausing for her viewers to answer is just like shows for preschoolers... they're really going after that age group, huh. (do actual streamers do stuff like that....?)
oh, I already saw Himari get a call from her sister. looks like I only missed 1 minute.
that is the ugliest anime dog I've ever seen, hands down, but Hiiro is cute. I'm sure she's well on her way to being the Non or whoever the prichan little sister was of aipri, in terms of popularity.
I do think it is very, very interesting that in this pretty series anime which is aimed at perhaps the youngest audience yet, they have put the mc in a dorm, away from her family. weird. actually I am for the first time realizing exactly how many anime have schools with dorms. you'd think japan is overflowing w boarding schools but idk of a single one lmao...
Mitsuki: it sure was the right decision to move into the dorm!
Himari: (completely ignores her statement to bring up aipri)
Himari's look out of aipri is really cute, I've finally decided. it's a shame that her twintails as an aipri are such a weird shape??? why do they curve up on the outside like that, all I can see is a large intestine when I look at them...... :(
the first time I watched this my internet cut out just as Mitsuki's face was approaching Himari's. I knew what she was doing bc of the comic in the aipri fanbook, but still it was like, oh! looks like it's gonna be another totally straight pretty series show!
oh man, the op. the song itself is cute and catchy, but this vtuber's voice is just too much, and it gets more too much as the song goes on. I get the appeal of her being a "real-life aipri", and presumably she's popular so her fans might be drawn to watch, but I hope she doesn't sing the next op too..... oh you know what would be kind of cool is if every op was sung by a different vtuber. that way if one sucked we wouldn't have to hear them again, and they'd showcase a lot of different people.
Meganee is especially exceptionally cute in her op cameo!!!
oh. A Crush. let it be insignificant 🙏 but if they become idol princesses too I'll allow it.
I like Chii's voice a lot, and her passion regarding aipri, but on the list of things I'm finding myself saying "oh. shame :( " about is her unfortunate hairstyle. also speaking of things that remind me of other things, her name Chii Mamiya sounds like "chi mamire" (blood-soaked) or "chi mame" (blood blister). surely I am not the only Japanese understander who hears this.
Yusa Kouji-sensei has by far my fav character design in this show. he is officially my favorite aipri.
wow, it's the classic post-covid tv broadcast opening ceremony... a chillingly real element in this fantasy rich kid school. irl this is the first year since covid we've had in-person opening ceremonies in many schools, it's a shame they don't get to at paradise academy yet lmao
I'm not even going to touch this whole welcome speech. I'm just going to slowly back away and pretend like I didn't see anything.
I love the aikatsu-level background character design in this classroom!! bicolor twintails is cute.
I wonder if these elementary schoolers are relevant or are just there to show how many people are watching Himari.
lmao despite what I said about Chii I think we were sharing the same braincell when she said "Her Victoria levels are out of control!!" they totally are!!
am I misunderstanding this or did Victoria not ban aipri? didn't she say "in moderation" only...? this is literally the same kind of thing schools say irl abt cutting down on screen time. just more dramatic.
so the elementary kid is relevant. Yuma... will he be an aipri too? if not, why would he even exist?
I didn't catch the first time around that this bracelet was the one uh, Candy Motif was fiddling with in the student council meeting. where'd she get it from?
this is the least amount of love I've ever seen put into a commercial break eyecatch.
are the aimus... cute? I can't see it...
it's very funny that the lipstick immediately disappears when they go 3d. they knew it looks bad, and they've still gotta cram it in there for that single second to sell toys.
this cgi. I think everyone's said it so far, but it's really not the best... I think I might like the game's graphics a little better, even. I do like seeing the coords lit up at least.
P.O.P.P.Y is a cute enough song. it's just barely on the listenable side of the line for me, but I do think it's a great match for what aipri is going for. also that is definitely a dance that was made for preschoolers to imitate.
buzzalyume... idk if anyone is aware or not, but buzz is a word that's in really common use regarding social media in japan atm. like you would say "that's buzzing" (literally I mean, figuratively it's more like "that's all the buzz" like the english use of the word) about something that's all over your timeline or whatever. so it's not totally out of left field for them to choose that word in particular, but it doesn't mean that it sounds any less forced, that's for sure!!
Bear Bear Bear's voice is cute.
I don't like these emoji reactions all over the screen. not cute.
the ed is cute.
...finally, I watched it all. whew. I have to say, I was not wowed by it! but it was fine. it's far better than having no pretty series at all. I keep thinking "I'll put off my opinion till I know more about it" about aipri and I'm tempted to say it again now--in this episode we barely met the main two characters in favor of worldbuilding. it kind of makes sense as the first ep of a little kid show, but will the rest of the show stay at this same level of character depth? it's way too early to say. but for me, that's what'll determine how much I like it.

This screams "Himari is the protagonist" so much they better never said that two protagonists lie back in Jenuary lol
#himitsu no aipri#along with the fact that Mitsuki is already a experienced idol#you can see they were trying to rip off Aikatsu friends with this dynamic but idk if it'll work#both Mitsuki and Himari are cute tho#(shout out to my phone for correcting himari with hikaru all time lol)

The sun has long gone from the horizon as the darkness of the night took over the sky above Minato City —The illuminating city that seemed to never sleep. And then once again, it looked like a little sneaky surprise had come to visit them in the form of three wondrous present boxes which exclusively addressed to each respective member of “R.I.P Märchen”~
First one appeared to be for the ex-idol:
An intricate and spectacular astromania watch was mystically ticking at her land of sight —It was an utter wonder at who was the amazing clockmaker who was commissioned for this fascinating piece of art!
And the second one was addressed for the mischievous SFX artist:
It was the brush holder for her makeup kits, readying to assist her in making the imagination real!
Then, there we finally came to the last one which was no doubt the tribute for her majesty Queen Card’s herself:
But wait, why did it look so plain… What? was it just a box…? Yet it seemed to be unable to open?
However, in that moment when the confusion started to rile up, one did notice that there was a letter scripted on the back of the card coming along with this last gift;
“O Dear Your Majesty the glorious mistress of the Deathly Fable,
The brightest queen of her age,
The brilliantest diamond of her empire,
Hope your majesty please pardon my rudeness for the little ruckus on your previous birthday for that I’ve already earned an earful scold from my duchess tee-hee★
Whatsoever, this time let’s wish a great grand congratulations on your team’s anniversary~
Here this humble cat has brought your majesty and her comrades some courteous tributes to celebrate your eminence for another year since my beloved duchess and my dear little children from Nara have gone out of their way asking this lowly me to bring you their best regards.
P.S. And especially for your majesty; even if my liege has asked me to offer you the precious ‘Heart Box’ as their tribute, this lowly me was somewhat afraid that just some piece of expensive stone might be a bit too dull for your liking —And that’s why this lowly me think we should bring in some more entertainment…
Exclusively made by the finest yosegi craftsman associated with my family, shall this lowly me introduce the special Himitsu Bako (Japanese Puzzle Box) specially made just for you, your majesty. With extra more tricky steps to unlock the real present inside, I hope this little additional gift of mine will keep you entertained during your special day~
Have a nice time then, adios ladies★
Curiouser and Curiouser,
ASHIBI
(the representative of Kairiku Production & the ambassador of Nara Division)”
It didn’t take long for the Queen to catch on to the set of patterns that made up the puzzle. Within seconds, her fingers moved swiftly and slid the last piece out of the way before unveiling the stunning jewel inside.
The staff members, who had all tried their hand at trying to fruitlessly solve the puzzle previously, watched their boss in admiration. It was no wonder they worked for her out of anyone else in the country.
“Whoa… I mean I know you’re supposed to be the smartest girl in the world but that’s unbelievable,” Reiaki said in awe as she placed her new brush jar down to admire the stone inside of the finely crafted himitsu box.
“Nothing but a quick work of patterns and memorization, my subject,” Queen Card said. She motioned for a young girl with muted rose-colored hair to come to her.
Puzzled, the girl complied and stepped forward. The Queen took the stone from inside the himitsu box and wrapped it around the young girl’s neck.
She looked at her superior, her iridescent eyes wide with surprise. She bowed timidly and joined the rest of her colleagues.
Miku gripped her new watch tightly, though also taking care to not shatter the glass that protected the stunning artwork inside. “You sure that was a good idea?”
Queen Card set down the box on the table, watching her underlings admire the jewel around the young girl’s neck. “These are all people who felt they have nowhere to go or are desperate for protection. The outcasts of society. I’ve no need for useless jewels, but these subjects would surely need them.”
Miku hummed and followed the Queen’s gaze, or lack of.
“And where would we be without them?”
Thanks for the gifts!

Himitsu no AiPri 5
Another filler-ish episode. The purpose of this one is so we can get to know a bit more about the dynamic of the school I guess. (Something I'm not really interested in.)
There are two dorms: West Lily and East Rose.
West Lily has Himari, Mitsuki, Airi, Rinrin, that two-toned pigtails girl, and Mitsuki's brother.
East Rose has Sakura, Tamaki, Chii, and Himari's brother.
Airi and Rinrin are still super cute. Chii is still super annoying. (I wish they would just let her perform already though.)
I'm super confused about how AiPri requests work. Surely you can't just request anyone to perform at any time. Popular idols would get thousands of requests a day. Do they cost money? Do you have to earn them somehow?
I guess nothing in AiPri really needs to make sense though.

The beginner's guide to the Pretty Series
With the recent announcement of the new Pretty Series installment titled Himitsu no AiPri, it's about time the Pretty Series returned after over a year since the Waccha PriMagi! series finale. In celebration of the newest installment, let's take a quick history lesson about the Pretty series.
The Pretty Rhythm Saga (2010-2014) - The Pretty Series saga began on July 15, 2010 with the arcade game titled Pretty Rhythm Mini Skirt. Made by Takara Tomy and developer SynSophia, this arcade game pits players in the role of Prism Stars, performing Prism Jumps, and collecting Prism Stones.
While the one that started it all made a slow start, the folks from Takara Tomy wanted to do more with the Pretty Rhythm saga, and with that, a TV anime titled Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was made. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 9, 2011, for 51 episodes, this anime is the fruit of Japan-Korea collaboration thanks to Japan's Tatsunoko Production and South Korea's Dong Woo Animation. The TV anime is all about Aira, Rizumu, and Mion in their quest to take on the prestigious Prism Queen Cup.
As Aira Harune's journey to become Prism Queen is completed, Mia Ageha takes the baton as the star of the next Pretty Rhythm story; Dear My Future. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 7, 2012, for 51 episodes, Dear My Future centers on the rivalry between Prizmmy☆ and the K-Pop group PURETTY. Believe it or not, there are real-life versions of the groups as seen in the anime. There's even a live-action segment featuring Prizmmy☆ as well.
As Mia Ageha's road to Grateful Symphonia is well and truly over, Naru Ayase steps to the spotlight in the third and final chapter of the Pretty Rhythm saga, titled Rainbow Live. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 6, 2013, it features an original storyline unlike the previous two. It's about Naru, An, and Ito, who are working together at the Prism Stone Shop while trying to take good care of a mysterious girl named Rinne.
Although the Pretty Rhythm saga ended, the story continues with the KING OF PRISM spinoff films featuring male characters from the Pretty Rhythm saga. They even got a 2019 anime show as well showcasing the rise of the boys who would be Septentrion.
The PriPara saga (2014-2018, 2021~) After the end of the Pretty Rhythm saga, the folks of Takara Tomy prepped up what it seems to be the second generation of the Pretty series. It's called PriPara and it aired on TV Tokyo in the Summer of 2014 and lasted for three seasons, four if you count Idol Time PriPara of course. This anime series centers on the life and times of Laala Manaka, a little girl who wants to be the best PriPara idol. Together with Mirei Minami and Sophy Hojo, they became SoLaMi Smile and they fought their way against the best idol teams of PriPara, especially Dressing Pafe consisting of Dorothy, Reona, and Sion, Tricolore, and Gaarmageddon, among many others. PriPara is a huge win for the people behind it and such success prompted the show to spawn four movies and outrageous merchandising rights.
In the spring of 2017, the next chapter of PriPara begins with three new main characters penning the final pages of this saga. Titled Idol Time PriPara, it's all about Yui Yumekawa, whose fateful encounter with Laala Manaka changed everything following an accident. With Nino Nijiiro and Michiru Kouda joining alongside, the MY☆DREAM trio made the best closure to this saga.
Although the PriPara TV series is finished, the story continues with Idol Land PriPara. First announced in December 2020, it was originally slated to be released in the spring of 2021 until it became subject to long gestation and delayed launch dates. It was released on August 17, 2023. It is the second official PriPara app game after the defunct PriPuz puzzle app game. This app game also features an original anime series set moments after the events of Idol Time PriPara. It introduces new characters such as Amari Katasumi, Mario, and Pololo, among others.
The Kiratto PriChan years (2018-2021) - Aired in TV Tokyo since April 2018 for three seasons, Kiratto PriChan is set in a world where fame comes from social media just like in the real world. It's about a group of girls who called themselves the Miracle☆Kiratts who are striving to become the best PriChan idols above the rest. For three seasons, we watched Miracle Kiratts taking on big challenges such as heated competition with rival teams such as Meltic StAr and Ring Marry, the jewel idol competition, saving the world, the road to the Queens Grand Prix, and saving the world...again, while they do what they do best; showcasing the world that they're the best PriChan sensations ever known.
PriMagi (2021-2022) - Waccha PriMagi! is the fourth installment of the Pretty Series that revolves around the lives of Primagistas striving to become the best of the best. The show is about Matsuri Hibino, a middle-schooler who dreams of being the best just like her idol, the legendary Jennifer Sumire Sol.
AiPri - After over a year of void, the Pretty Series has returned with the newest installment coming to TV Tokyo this April 2024. Titled Himitsu no AiPri, the new series stars Minori Fujidera as Himari Aozora and Sae Hiratsuka as Mitsuki Hoshikawa. For the first time in Pretty Series, the animation sequences were provided by OLM, the studio behind the Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch anime series, while South Korea's Dongwoo A&E returned to cooperate for it.
Welcome back, Pretty Series! The world can't wait for the franchise's comeback show this April.

howdy, just stopping by to say your post about stuff like super sentai being magical girl shows just made something click in my brain. like, that sorta stuff has orbited my brain around the magical girl stuff I enjoy but like. you putting it into words that it is a magical girl thing just made the pieces click into place in my brain. thank you
yeah! toku stuff tickles my brain the same way precure does so i wish more ppl thought about toku when they talk about mg henshin heroes since i feel like if you're a fan of the typical henshin hero squad set up of precure and tokyo mew mew and stuff super sentai will probably scratch that itch way more than something like full moon o sagashite which like don't get me wrong i love it but it's not the same (which makes sense cuz shes a magical idol. full moon fills that need for me to listen to severe bangers not watch girls beat monsters to smithereens)
hero mg shows take a TON of inspiration from tokusatsu. sailor moon was inspired from super sentai iirc takeuchi is a fan of himitsu sentai gorenger. precure has overlapping writers from toeis tokusatsu programs, (for example healing goods writer did lupat, zenkaiger, zyuohger among others) plus smile is just a huge love letter to sentai lol and yayoi is canonically a toku fan and loves kamen ride :p and the fights tend to me more on the kaiju and ultraman side of things like i always feel like even though the set up for the teams is sentai, a lot of the time the fights are closer to ultraman than anything else. i wish more mg fans would give them a shot even if it's not girly and it's not animated 😭
