Well... i finished both snootgame and volcano high, i needed to talk a bit about them

First of all: I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS SOO MUCH, FANG I LOVE YOU I HOPE TO YOUR HAPINNESS

2:. . .jeez, it's so difficult talk about both games without making parallels or comparing them

SG is a very simpler visual novel with a... very questionable reason to exist to begin with, but even with that it surprises you with a very beutiful story of self development and young love in the modern times. The multiples endings all of them are EMOTIONAL DESTROYERS, even the obvious joke-shouting-super edgy ending 1, but just 'cause all the care and love you have for the characters, you feel it in a more deeply way and you suffer watching them like this, giving you strenght to do the best ending possible and. . .oof, that destroys you too, but in a different way

I love Fang an Anon soo much, i wish them nothing but hapinnes

To me at least, fang's story isn't just about being no-binary. But being a young person trying multipples sides of their persona and life to try and found itself, with the help of the ones who cares about them to grow as a person

Fang could be a She,a he or them, and i would be perfectly fine with any of those

But if at the end she found herself more happy in this new version. What's the problem? If precisely that's the goal with this theme right?

BUT.... snootgame have a very heavy sin to carry and is. . .it's a 4chan game, and is a parody made to make fun about an openly pro-LGBT+ game

And then internet folks started all this controversy and harassement and hate to the game and the studio by a lot of sides and themes and. . .i feel so sorry for the studio and the people working in volcano high, as a snootgame fan i'm truly sorry for what you passed trought, im hope with all my heart this doesn't make you to give up this style of game, and i'll be waiting to see your next project with heart ^^

I really wanted to enjoy it, i really wanted to love this version of the characters and the story but. . .fuck, i can't

Almost all the characters are soo flat (personality i mean)

All and everyone of them talk about ona (1) thing that they like and never shut up about it, you can be talking about anything else and- OH here's comes trish to talk about her worm. . .again, or sage and their cooking, or fang and their band. . .i get it, they're character traits and you need to use them but... i don't know these people, i don't know at all these characters at all.

In the first hald of the game you need to at least try to tell me something about them, their relationships, their past and problems, give me a reason to give 2 and a half shit about them... and they try, but everytime they talk and seems to be about to give some context they start to just talk about that one and only thing they like, leaving me with nothing to work with

And that's the problem of volcano high in general to me. Is obvious there's a story, there's a background to these characters and there's real context to almost every conversation they have. . .but we don't know it, we can't see it, we don't KNOW these people and is frustrating. After the 2 hours i just shuted down my brain and every time this happend i just go "oh yeah,some cute experience we don't know about them)

The two musical montages (there's 2 right?) With photos of the group living their lives and interacting with each other. . .they're very cute and seems to be fun, but we don't live any of this. Fuck sake i WANTED TO BE SAD in the ending, i wanted to feel the characters and their lives sliping away at the end

See al these beutiful and impactful moments? Well. . .i'd love to see them, to live them with them

But we don't. They're just a bunch of PNGs passing by at the end as the music continues. And that upset me a lot...

And what upset's me the most. . .you know why i care so much about the characters? Why i need to know their lives and feel something in this story?

BECAUSE OF FUCKING SNOOT GAME

They made me to care about fang and the gang, abour nazer, about naomi, about stella and rosa, i cared about this characters soo much that. . .i feel attatched to the GVH ones too. Even if volcano high do close to nothing to make me care for them at this level

It's to sad and so unfair, volcano high obviously was made with a lot of heart and they OBVIOUSLY cares about the characters a lot more than almost anyone in both fandoms, just the "memories" from above show it. But with the game story and characters as they are right now. . .i don't want to compare them so much, but honestly without NG being so important i wouldn't finished volcano high

And about the story itself? Well... is very rushed to say at least

As i said earlier they spent too much time trying to made us meet the characters (but without letting us know them)

To sudenly introduce the meteorite plot and. . .it feels zero important. Yeah it drives the characters to the harsh decisions they're making and how they interact with each other, but for half the game the meteorite is just there in the background and just mentioned over here and there as a reminder. Just to sudenly be the most important thing in the world at the last hour and half of the game.

Before that all the plot is about fang,the band and the battle of the bands (wich i hardly care about at this point)

But. . .fang and the band? Here they made it a very good work

Yeah, fang talk almost exclusively about the band as is their (1) personality trait, but still they manage to make me feel and understand how important is this to them, and. . .wow, i really felt how fang was feeling reed and specially trish leaving them behind and not taking the band seriously (and still having fang at the edge with promises of being a team but without helping them AT ALL)

I mean, there's no problem with reed and trish don't seeing the band as something more than some fun friends time after school and wanting to make something else for their life. The problem is they seeing fang talking 24/7 aboud the band their future together and openly taking life decisions about it and never saying "hey pal, i think you should focus more in a solos career, we don't want to live with the music but we're still friends" or something like that. . .and they do

Trish says this to fang. . .in the battle night, just in the most important night in fang's life, just to say that she's leaving the band in this very important moment and taking choises she never discussed with fang (as fang did talk with trish about theirs)

And the story insist on pointing out fang as the bad person here, who makes all the bad choises and burn all the bridges with everyone. . .but they doesn't

Even at the end with everyone crying and yelling each other, is fang who talk to everyone and says they're a horrible person and you can blame everything on fang because. . .reasons? Idk because with all the choises and talking options we taked at this point, we clearly made fang a very patient and caring person, but still there's one and only way the story was made and was with fang being constantly a bitch with everyone, so it doesn't matter if you take the bad or good options to talk about 6 hours, the dialogues are all about the bad ones almost constantly. And that's fucked and unfair for my dude fang the pterodolphin, i love them so much

But. . .not everything is bad with volcano high

The background arts are beautiful and very colorful, a lot of cute dettails and i love them

The characters? Well. . .it's weird, i love them a lot and they're very unique, in the special images and animations they look soo good

But in the normal gameplay...

They look kinda derpy all the time, and the few animations they constantly use for everything get repetitive after a short while (take a shot everytime trish does the eyebrow rise grin animation, tell me how you died)

The art style in general of the game is very cute and i love it, but for the in-game animations they needed some more time to make them. . .feel alive and les akward

And the music?

Hell yeah this is good shit, i love fang's voice and definitely i'm gonna check more of their music soon

In conclusion...

I can see where all of this came from, if that leaked script is real it just makes soo much sence about how the final product ended,i can see every original plot being planted as seeds in the final game but never having the chance to grow or even blossom, just a little sapling in the dirt, and that make me so sad. . .

Even with all of that,they managed to launch the game,and leaving out all the controversy i think the game got very descent sales and everything was kinda worth, i really hope they don't give up again with this type of story

But Ko_On and cavemanon are full of talented people and they deserve a chance to grow and shine by themselves

Both without being a perhaps-bad-faith parody, or without so massive backlash from the wrong people who's not are even interested in the quality but the politics in the games

Not So Berry (Straud Descendants) Gen 9

Today's (9/24/2024) Episode: Preparing to Party

Noemi and Luigi hoped to turn their difficult day around with a party in Del Sol, but first they needed to make a quick trip out to The Ridge.

Their first stop was to Grandpa Gilbert, who had agreed to take Skye overnight so the couple didn’t have to rush back to relieve a sitter.

Noemi gave her dad a big hug “Thanks so much for having him.” she began “I do have to warn you though, he’s been a bit aggressive lately. He kicked Luigi’s grandfather at the market earlier today when he tried to give him a hug.” Gilbert gave his grandson a shocked look, but then smiled.

“Skye and I are old pals; I’m sure we’ll be fine. Even if he does get wild, it won’t be my first rodeo.“ he gave her a wink. “I have my ways.”

Nearby Luigi was doing his part to make sure Grandpa Gilbert had nothing to worry about. “Your grandfather is being very kind to give you a sleepover tonight” he began “If Mommy and I hear that you were mean to him or anyone else you’ll be in big trouble when we get back. Do you understand?”

Skye’s face fell at his father’s harsh words. He loved his gramps; he wasn’t anything like that scary see through sim who kept changing colors or those stupid babies who tried to take his toys and ruin his stuff! He wanted more of his daddy’s attention, but not like this.

Of course, Skye had neither the vocabulary or the presence of mind to articulate any of that, so he simply nodded. Satisfied, Luigi said a quick hello to his father-in-law while Noemi kissed her baby goodbye.

Their next stop was just up the way in Galloping Gulch for a quick check-in with Amaya and Miguel. They’d agreed to keep Roach at the ranch another night rather than have him go home to an empty house on the island, but Noemi still wanted to make a quick detour to see her “fur baby”.

“Mister Roach is the sweetest.” Amaya told her “If you really missed him so much, I’d gladly trade places with you tonight. Hobnobbing with celebrities in the valley sounds like a grand ol’ time!” Her excitedly waggling eyebrows drew a chuckle from her friend.

“While I’m sure you’d have more fun than I’m going to, I promised “Hot Stuff” I’d be his arm candy for the evening.” Noemi replied. “I’ll tell you all about it when I come back to get this handsome fellow tomorrow.” Her husband, who’d overheard the whole thing, recalled how Amaya had thrown herself at Orange during their visit to his mansion in the hills and thanked the watcher that his bride was much more restrained around famous sims.

Back at home it was finally time to spin into their formal wear. “Man, I love getting all dressed up” Luigi said as he stood admiring himself in the mirror “Always have. I considered making my “professional style” constant over the top formal wear, but it didn’t feel like the right look for a pro gamer.”

Noemi shrugged “I know your image is important to you, but if you like dressing fancy then you should do that more often! I know you struggled with aging up, but you’ve come to terms with that, and sims often dress more formally as they get older. Plus, with any luck, soon you’ll be a Starlight award winner and a videogame mogul. It could be time to change up your look again?” Perhaps to something more age appropriate… she finished silently.

“Hmmmm” Luigi replied, taking another long look in the mirror “You may have a point there. Well anyway, let’s go; my category is up first thing, so we don’t want to be late!” Turning, they headed out the door towards the teleporter hand in hand, excited to see what the evening would bring.

okay listen, i know he's a gamer but i think that he'd be chill about watching video games with you. infact it just gives him more games to check out.

would probably take notes on being a gamer with an audience. realizing he wouldn't have to show his face, commentary can be during the game and/or after.

his dream of being a professional gamer is stronger now, and he's gonna make it a goal for you to be his favorite.

most important, for the folks who go to sleep to gameplay? like markiplier??? trust he notices this and this adds to his drive for you to be his favorite

granted he gets a bit flustered when he focuses on the idea that you'd fall asleep to his voice, but that's neither here nor there

if you're artsy or techy in the sense of like coding games or rigging a model?? the make a game for him and a vtuber model. he will freak out and cherish it so much.

i feel like if he has a vtuber model?? then he has like chibi pets around him (yes it's lotan, henry 1.0, and henry 2.0) and i swear his own model??? handsome af. that's why he's so flustered, because he's like "do i really look like that?" and you either build his ego or shrug

sophia touches grass too much to be considered a gamer girl but after rory introduces her to first-person shooters? you're dead. you're gone. you're her dad you're reporting her but she'll never be dead or gone because pro teams all over the country are trying to recruit her. which country. who knows. she only plays at her friends' houses on saturdays because she doesn't want her brother to snitch on her swearing but sometimes she uses her 'oops i fell off a cliff again and need to call for help' projection and gets banned from those houses too. she and her horse-poop-covered hands hate mobile games. her parents are the reason new candy crush levels are still being added but she has neither the patience nor the long-term planning skills for level one. did the genocide route on undertale in record time because she thought it was how the game was meant to be played. into red dead redemption for the horses and the bearded cowboys who learn about fatherhood via gunfights.

ava is a handheld console girlie. if pokemon nurse were an actual profession she'd be employee of the month thirteen times a year. her animal crossing island has a better economy than every continent combined. that being said the day her brothers introduced her to warioware was the day the world was introduced to true bloodshed. has broken at least one controller because of sheer emotional attachment to a cute character. treats pikmin like a survival horror game and dead space like a sci-fi romcom. got the pacifist ending in undertale and does not understand why other rpgs don't have the mercy option. unless rory's in the game at which point she brings out the laser guns or whatever to get back at him for making her reveal her middle name. you know he's let that slip to more than one call of duty lobby ok let a girl live.

layla's favourite game is google chrome. she's boring and i love her for that. she speedruns minesweeper and solitaire to get her mind off particularly devastating biographies. she's friends with everyone's parents on candy crush and scrabble. she could be a gm on chess.com but she overthinks her moves to the point of losing on time despite playing as white. she's almost been hacked so many times because she can't resist correcting bad moves on word formation advertisements and gets led to online casino #infinity or something. she has a lifelong streak on every new york times game except vertex because you cannot tell me wildstar's constant use of her magic didn't destroy her eyesight even further.

isabel puts the bro in smash bros. rotates between king k. rool, sonic, and greninja because she has a brand and it must be tangential to adhd medication. in the same vein as sophia i think she touches grass too much to be considered a gamer girl but she makes rory keep up with madden and fifa news just to figure out if she's been added to the latest installment. she has a skateboard on her dorm wall but never uses it so i'm thinking she played through the og trilogy of tony hawk's games as a kid and echoed every voice line to the point of perfect memorisation. take the word dude away from her and she's mute. also i think she discovered happy wheels on her mom's computer and ruined several important business presentations that way.

valentina is a slightly grown ipad kid. i'm sorry but you can't tell me she didn't steal her style from dress to impress. also she rates everyone one star on those games not because she's a corrupt voter but because she has a sixth sense for when a bitch is hiding bacon hair beneath a hundred layers of sparkles. up there with isabel in terms of lacking screen time video game wise because i truly believe her family would spend their money on better (read: elite-r) past times but she 1000% plays the sims. one world is for planning fashion moments and carrying on the digital furi bloodline. one world is for drowning people by deleting their pool ladders and saying "not now sweetie mommy's cyberbullying the mayor" to her baby who's on fire.

rory's room looks like a gamestop. idc about his canon phone case he is SILLY. he will play anyone in smash as long as it looks funny next to the other character but he has a soft spot for kirby, yoshi, zero suit samus (isabel side eyes him very hard for this at first but it's still a very gay choice i promise) and wii fit trainer. his personality is held together by goat simulator, untitled goose game, and donut county. also duct tape and blue raspberry gum. he trolls a little (a lot) on first person shooters and mmorpgs mostly so he can pretend with an ounce of plausible deniability that he's just having a fun unserious time when sophia and/or ava beat his ass at both even though they're on the same team.

Film Friday: Summer Wars

The Favorite Film Train continues chugging along. Today, I'm going to talk a bit about a movie that never fails to make me emotional. I was going to say "cry" because there's also a bit of that, but it feels like too general of a word since this film takes me on a cathartic journey that most films can't even do on first viewing. What's weird about all of this is that all of this is from a romantic comedy that also features a plot about an evil AI taking over "The Metaverse if it actually worked and was popular and interfaced with everything" I am of course talking about Mamuro Hosoda's Summer Wars.

After narrowly losing out on being the Japanese representative in the international Math Olympics, it looks like Kenji's summer is going to be largely uneventful as he does low-level moderation on the social media/metaverse Leviathan OZ. This all changes when a classmate of his Natsuki hires him for an untraditional summer job.

Natsuki wants Kenji to pretend to be her fiance as she goes home to meet and celebrate the birthday of her aging grandmother, a strong-willed matriarch of an old family rendered penniless by her deceased husband. As it turns out, Natsuki has been telling some slight mistruths about her love life to her family, and now wants to lend some credence to her swarm of white lies with an actual appearance just in case this celebration is her grandmother's last. Surely, no shenanigans of a personal or international nature will come to interfere with this plan.

To make matters worse, in a quiet moment between meeting Natsuki's robust, and more than a little kooky, extended family, Kenji solves what he believes to be a number puzzle that turns out to be encrypted with the OZ security algorithm. This allows a mysterious entity going by the name Love Machine to start a takeover of the whole platform that in good old-fashioned over-featuring tradition, holds everything from bank and card details to access codes to public and private systems for its many, many users. What follows is an honestly pretty impressive balancing act as Kenji has to try to undo his mistake in OZ through whatever limited means he has by outsmarting the increasingly unlimited and unhinged Love Machine, while also dodging whole generations worth of shenanigans when the cat comes out of the bag about Natsukis plan and his possible involvement in the OZ hacking scandal.

Where the film goes from good to great though, is when the two storylines start merging. Kenji seeks help from the young pro gamer Kazuma almost immediately, but as the problem with Love Machine escalates, he finds himself involving larger and larger parts of Natsuki's family to help. Natsuki herself does go through a somewhat more limited arc, but her untangling the relationships and loyalties around her half-uncle Wabisuke and his involvement in this sorry business, as well as standing up to her older and more skeptical relatives in order to buy Kenji some breathing room, and eventually even support, is also pretty impressive although it lacks the heft of the Kenji plot.

Where Natsuki really shines though is in the third act, where the plot, for reasons I will not spoil here, pivots on the most important game of Koi-Koi the world has ever seen, and Natsuki is good at Koi-Koi. The game is such a picture-perfect example of climactic pacing and plays with both hope and despair so effectively that I kind of want to do a shot-by-shot breakdown of the whole thing just to capture the sheer dramatic majesty of the thing. Watch this space for that whenever I feel up to it, I suppose. For now, though, suffice to say that it gets pretty intense.

The hardest part about writing about this movie is honestly how easy it is to forget all the really good quiet moments between the visual fireworks of Oz and the charged emotions and very human shenanigans of the real-world portion. Hell, I arguably forgot about mentioning how the "fake dating" scenario ends, as these things so often do, in an actually cute romance as Natsuki and Kenji grow to trust and depend on each other.

This movie has some fantastic moments of quiet, though, from the beats of rest after moments of high emotion that are almost painterly in their composition, to absolutely heart-rending visual storytelling in pivotal moments of character development, it's just hard to remember them when contrasted with the abovementioned spectacle or an 80-year-old woman swinging a naginata at a family member who has displeased her. Still, I believe these small quiet moments are part of why this movie gets to me. Every time the plot slows down even a little, it isn't just to rest, but to deepen the stakes and make us care for the characters.

There are also some historical parallels going on in this movie, the chief one being comparing the relative unimportance of Natsuki's family now compared to their relative glory days during the Warring States period, although their lot was still relatively humble even at that zenith. What is a bit spicier though are some parallels with WW2 history, although I haven't done quite enough research to be comfortable to say much more about those parallels other than that they're there. Chalk this one up to another one I'll get into if I have time and energy at a later date I suppose.

When all is said and done, writing about Summer Wars feels a lot like dancing about cooking. It's a deeply emotional journey for two characters that embody the best of the broad characterization I often criticize anime storytelling for using, and it pulls the viewer along. It's a beautiful, messy, chaotic movie about the beautiful chaotic mess that is family in both direct traditional form and the expanded "we are all one family" sense of the word. Check it out if you have the chance. Maybe bring some tissues just in case though.

While I'm talking about Legendary Moonlight Sculptor. One thing I think it did interestingly compared to some other game system type stories, is that it uses the asymmetry of the stakes to create some drama.

See, in a lot of stories where the characters have game system powers, everyone is on the same page on the importance of the game. Doesn't matter if it's a death game, or esports, just normal gameplay, or even just a game mechanics verse, everybody around the main cast knows how seriously the world should be taken; there is an agreed level of importance.

Meanwhile, in LMS, the protagonist's motivation is to make money - he needs to pay off loan sharks if he wants to have a place to live and to provide for his family, and he thinks being a pro gamer is his best shot. But in an MMO, not everybody is going to share those priorities, nobody else knows why he's so dedicated to the game. So some drama is milked from the contrast between the people who are treating this videogame as, well, a game, for fun, while for him it is life and death and livelihood.

It's an interesting dynamic that I haven't seen replicated super often in LMS' various imitators.

. . . loading 2nd chapter : 45% (in which Idia just can’t really comprehend extroversion mess and maybe a game session isn’t so game-ish anymore)

Idia can’t sleep. 

He has tried closing his eyes countless times, and yet it’s already 3:47 am. What’s the point of being awake now? The sound of Ortho charging on a dock station isn’t disturbing in any way, moreover, usually it even helps. Some people buying aroma candles, Idia himself heard from Vil (another story of how he ended up in a potionology class, flesh-and-blood, but yes, he did heard it in live ) that maintaining sleep schedule is important, and in cases of insomnia he, above all, should visit a doctor, and then he could try drinking herbal teas, and… blah-blah, another normie talks or whatsoever.

For a second Idia thought it would be better if he closed his eyes and saw himself ordering a whole pack of 20+ aroma candles with a huge variety of scents as a cure from insomnia, but of course it won’t happen. 

He saw Yuu‘s smug face instead. Idia Shroud, true genius, proud eccentric, pro-gamer in all fields (except these stupid otome ones), a grown-up 18 years old adult by now, can’t damn sleep because the one magicless girl is haunting him at night. Oh Sevens, another day, another flop. How the hell could he comprehend what happened today? Oh, the day already passed, it’s night, then it’s yesterday then. Idia despised himself at some rate due to behaving in a normie way. Would be just perfect if he graduated from this shitty college as soon as possible, live with Ortho, play his favorite games everyday, maybe raising a cat or two - Sevens, he just wants a fluffy cute little creature to give his sudden bursts of attention to at least someone (bonus points if it’s meowing instead of talking, so he won’t deal with embarrassing situations). That would be so perfect, so safe and comfortable for him, but fate has other plans stored for him.

Idia bit his lip, leaving another mark comparable to a scratch, and sighed heavily, closing his eyelids in the hope of erasing the image of the girl from his memory. He heard his underclassman once. An Ignihyde - Ignhyde!! - student asked Idia if he could give him advice as a dorm head, and Idia thought he built a strong enough image of him as a dorm leader - unreliable, insecure, uncommunicative, mysterious maybe, but nothing out of character. Idia tried his best, though, giving a nod and convincing himself it was just a small technical problem, but then…

“D-dorm head,” the student mumbled back then, and Idia thought of a quite distinguishing feature of all Ignihyde students - stuttering out of embarrassment. “I have no friends to consult… Can you give me a piece of advice?”

“W-well… Y-yeah, let’s see…” Idia hated being responsible for others. You’ve managed getting accepted into this college somehow, then you would handle the rest too, right? Why ask others? Why communicating? Argh, it was driving him insane. 

“Y-you know… I-I… I guess I have a crush on someone…”

Sevens, it was hell. Idia wondered if Hades has ever encountered such a situation? What would he do if he was in Idia’s shoes? 

He can’t remember what it was that he told him in response, but two weeks later the student ended up being rejected. Of course he was! Who would want to deal with gloomy, irritable and antisocial students? It was just logical thinking, rationale and just. 

Yeah, normies behavior is the worst. He couldn’t believe he was thinking of Yuu when he could be gaming or oh wow sleeping even. Was it his first or second sleep deprived day? He can’t remember.

Idia will be staying in his room as always, but this isn’t helping. Ortho was looking really intimidating when he said he wants Idia’s room to be clean and neat when he and Yuu will be back after classes. So much stress for one shitty day. 

For a second he thought of completing the game this night so Yuu will lose and yeah, she’ll complain for some time, maybe kick his ass, but that’s bearable, that would do. He even completed the route Yuu was finishing yesterday, all thanks to her walkthrough though , but then he thought Ortho will be disappointed in him and Idia couldn’t afford keeping his little brother sad. 

Well… if he can’t sleep, maybe he can do something productive now? 

With that thought he jumped off the bed, sighing and deciding to rearrange his figurines at least, preparing for a long morning full of normies tactics. Isn’t it pitiful?.. He thought, rolling up his sleeves and grabbing monitor wipes.

 “Good morning, brother!ー Huh?”

Ortho turned on automatically, and the image of Idia with the lanky limbs of his sleeping rather uncomfortably on the floor, perfectly neat and clean room remained untouched. Ortho couldn’t analyze the received data for a mere seconds, but then his eyes blinked with a light of joy. 

“Hehehe~” Ortho laughed, making Idia lay in a more comfortable position and bringing spare pillows to lay on. “See you soon, big brother!”

Idia woke up a few hours later, finding himself with tangled limbs, his whole body aching from pain. Unpleasant anxiety filled him, as if spreading over the body with viscid ink. He tried to escape his thoughts, accumulating in his head, when he took a look at the pillows around him, smiling and imagining Ortho keeping his precious brother in a cozy comfortable atmosphere.

Luckily for him, there were no dorm heads meeting today, he already could proclaim he’s a deadman because of Yuu coming to his damn room. Geez, was it necessary to ventilate the space or was some basic cleaning enough already? Could he be considered maintaining a healthy lifestyle by now? Argh, he started thinking he was doing it for Ortho, not for the girl who tried to debate him!

Alright, enough worry. He was going to beat her anyway, what would possibly go wrong?

His whole existence, apparently.

Yuu pulled all-nighter. It was not an unfamiliar thing for her to do, despite all Lilia’s complainings, but it was worth it, or so she thought.

Ortho kept on asking her, how was her school day, wasn’t she tired because according to his tests her state wasn’t a 100% one, but she insisted it was fairly normal. Human beings were still the most complicated creatures, Ortho thought.

Yuu felt some gazes lingered on her silhouette as she walked through endless corridors filled with glowing bluish light. She got used to being watched, but couldn’t help but wonder if it’s okay for her to approach Idia right now? She did not want to make him uncomfortable, even slightest.

“Alright, Yuu! Please have fun, I’ll check on you two later,” Ortho stopped at the massive heavy-looking door, tagging the girl on her sleeve as she wanted to proceed further without any thinking. 

“Oh, thank you for showing me the way. See you!”

She hugged him, a smile spreading across her face. She took several deep breaths before knocking. But this, however, was not necessary ー Idia heard and saw her mental preparation on the cameras installed in the corridor, and thought about whether such great courage and determination was really needed to enter the room of a worthless otaku.

“Hello, Idia, it’s me, Yuu!”

“C-c-come in…” Yuu heard him mumbling behind the door, and made her way into his room.

His room was everything she expected, but suspiciously cleaner. Neatly arranged things, consoles, figurines and books with complicated names on its spines made her too stunned to speak.

“Urgh, just sit wherever you’d like…”

“Do you have a spare chair then? I promise I won’t sit close to you so you’re not in an uncomfortable position. Gotta keep a safe distance, you know,” she smiled but Idia didn’t find anything funny.

He does not have a spare chair. Shit.

Panic overwhelmed him at once, causing to tremble a little, and Yuu figured out he actually did not have one. Small “ah!” escaped her lips suddenly, making Idia shift his attention to her.

“I can sit on the floor! I’ll stretch a bit in case I won’t see the monitor.”

“N-no need…”

Suddenly a whole monitor just lost its glow, as if curled into a thin line, to appear right at the level of her face, closer to the floor. She gasped, astonished by the tech development of this world, and made herself comfortable on the floor, minding if it was alright to grab a pillow.

“Thank you, but… How would you look at it yourself?”

It's a nightmare, it's unbearable, he just kept embarrassing himself, worsening the situation with every second!

“I have an idea, if you wouldn’t mind,” Idia glanced at her, trying to cover his pink hair tips in vain. “You can sit beside me on the floor.”

Oh Sevens, he wanted it over already. 

He didn’t say anything to her, though, sinking to the floor and pulling his knees to his chest, burrowing. He dropped his chin on the knee bones that were showing through his pants, to which Yuu swallowed vaguely  

It was awkward. 

“S-shouldn’t you do your extrovert stuff and just… You know…” Idia grabbed a console, stuttering while speaking and totally avoiding her straightforward piercing gaze, when she chuckled suddenly.

“Thank you for asking, dear customer! Today in stock: extroverted monologues which can help you in case you find silence awkward and don’t want to chat yourself, then we have an amazingly wide range of topics for conversation with the ability of further discussion support.”

“Geez, you’re spending too much time with Azul, quit it. You won’t gain anything good from it.”

“Heheh, you know him well! In any case, our service can provide you with another helpful item. Look here.”

Yuu gave him her phone. Apparently there was a 30 seconds-long video in her phone gallery, and he didn’t get what she expected him to do. Giving a small nod, she encouraged him to tap on a play button, and he did accordingly.

Idia recognized the music immediately, a remix of the newest Gakemo song played. It was a MijiU edit, many frames of her fancams flashed before his eyes, cool video effects changed each other with smooth transitions, not to mention pretty decent work on a soundtrack. Yuu picked MijiU finest fancams with the best outfit choices, considering Idia was quite picky with them, and Yuu managed to guess his tastes correctly… 

Yuu wanted to ask Idia for his opinion on her edit on which she spent an unholy amount of time during a night she could be sleeping peacefully, but he pressed on the slider, dragging it to the start, and rewatched edit five times in a row, his golden eyes flickering with unconcealed childlike joy. 

“U-ugh!” Idia realized he showed too much of his emotions and quickly tried regaining himself, pink hue covering his hair tips. “Did you do it yourself?”

“Yeah, I haven’t done edits since I got isekai-ed into Twisted Wonderland.. I thought of creating a  MagiCam acc dedicated to kpop edits, what do you think, heh?” 

“Kpop?” Idia asked.

“Ah, yeah, it’s the music genre. K stands for korean, and pop… I guess you have it here. Since Gakemo music sounds similar to one we call kpop in my world, then maybe it is called twst-pop here? Lol,” Yuu chuckled, making silly guesses as Idia rewatched an edit once more.

“I-I suggest you invest into this, sounds pretty cool…” He returned the phone to her. “O-oh, and t-thank you for this edit… You didn’t have to do it…”

“My pleasure! I thought I would cause quite a nuisance by being here, since you didn’t agree wholeheartedly to me coming here in your room. I’m glad you liked it! I’ll make more once I have time.”

It was another normie tactic of hers, don’t fall for it, it’s a trap, Idia thought, finally managing to keep his hair steadily blue as usual, calming his heart as well as pink hair tips. 

Idia turned in his computer, a password needed for proceeding. A crazy long combination of digits appeared as black dots.

“Right down up right right down right right up up down down. Rotate, Invert, One revolution,[1]” Yuu hummed as if she was singing an unknown to Idia song, and he glanced at her real quick. 

“E-eh?” He was genuinely confused, while the desktop image appeared on the monitor. An anime scenery, similar to something from Hayao Miyazaki’s works, and Yuu thought Idia decided to play it safe, almost revealing her sixth sense and guessing he changed it before she came. She would be okay with anything, considering she wanted to use Changhee[2] pic as her lockscreen, but it was impossible since the idol doesn’t even exist in this world, so she uses Kintoki from Kintama[3] pic instead. 

“It’s a song from my world, maybe I should write the lyrics to you, I guess you can relate to it at some rate. I wonder if you have vocaloids in your world too…”

Idia now realized how he sounded to all the normies surrounding him occasionally in this college. Yuu was speaking an alien language, at least it sounded like that to him, but he thought it wasn’t bad… She had her geek side too, it felt… pretty much okay?

The opening scene began to play, and Idia quickly skipped it. He watched it one first time, and so did Yuu, it was enough. The whole menu was redesigned due to a true ending route finally unlocking, four walls ruined as cerulean butterflies enveloped menu buttons, small bell ringing noises escaping from wings flapping. Mysterious atmosphere got Yuu excited as Idia began the game. Yeah, the design was pretty, but the story still hasn’t awakened anything in him.

The main heroine found herself locked in an unknown apartament, the music citing suspense lingering everywhere. Idia observed Yuu‘s side profile quickly, noticing pupils dilating in excitement, and he could understand her bright mood. It’s okay if she finds the game interesting, well, it was decent at least. Not that he wanted to voice his opinion to her, though.

“Y-you know,” Idia interrupted the silence, which wasn’t uncomfortable, but Idia felt stupid speaking so suddenly. Yuu didn’t mind, though, tilting her head to see him better. “Many players get stuck in the first chapter because the difficulty level increases insanely.”

“Mhm, I heard about it. I’m still in no favor of turning the challenge down,” oh, Idia got it, she was persistent as hell. 

“T-the game has a database with possible questions on which players need to answer by typing themselves, no options offered…” he continued, as she managed to keep up with his reading pace while he was clicking on his console, her eyes locked on the screen. “It has, like, at least o-one hundred possible questions b-based on your previous walkthrough…”

“Ooh! That’s so innovative!! Twisted Wonderland's AI development is incredible, really.”

“R-right?!” Idia’s voice suddenly became louder, but Yuu only smiled at him, returning him back to earth, him feeling highly embarrassed. “Ughm.”

They continued playing in silence interrupted only by the main heroine’s voice trembling, giving she was scared of being locked up and chatting with an unknown man through her phone. Yuu adjusted herself on the floor, nearly brushing Idia’s shoulder for a mere second, and got him squeaking in fear of being touched. She apologized for being inconsiderate, feeling embarrassment accumulating in her. She got so comfortable that she forgot they weren’t friends, it was a pleasant acquaintance for sure, but nothing more than that, to her regret. 

In any case, they proceeded further, and a mysterious man who was chatting with the heroine, threw her into another chat with people she didn’t know. The players knew, though, since the characters were other love interests. 

“Aww, look at K[4] being concerned about the heroine,” Yuu mumbled, cupping her face in her hands and smiling. 

“Ew, gross, stop,” Idia cringed at her, quickly skipping the whole scene. 

“Hey, wait, show me the log, maybe there was something important to the question we’ll get soon!” She protested, considering grabbing his console, but Idia just brushed her off.

“Nah, another normie cringe flirting, set me free, ‘kay? You’ll be in charge of these lame things.”

“I don’t mind, but I still need to see what they’re talking about!! How am I supposed to do it when you’re skipping a whole scene?”

“Chill, I don’t think there was something important.”

“Argh, just how are you so sure!! Yo, give me the console, I’ll check it real quick myself.”

“Woah, normie, get yourself together. Me giving you my console? Not gonna happen.”

And she thought the friendship was about to blossom despite every embarrassing interaction they had today. 

She grumbled and furrowed her brows, not impressed by the Idia’s sly grin. He stretched out his hand with the console, making it almost impossible to grab for her. She leaned over, causing Idia to jump out of his place, making him stand, and she did the same. Their height difference hit her hard, giving she was really small next to him. Yuu realized it only now. 

Idia was tall. Like, really tall. 

“Dude, I highly recommend you to not pick up fights with me!”

“Heh, what’s with your casual confidence, normie?”

“Argh, don’t tell me we’re back to calling me normie!!” 

Yuu decided to step closer, grabbing Idia’s shirt and making him scream. 

“G-g-g-geez, normie, stay back! Critical damage taken, need a HP recovery item asap…”

Console fell out of his hands, and Yuu managed to grab it in midair somehow, but an unusual sound came from the game, shifting their attention to the screen.

“Shit,” Idia hissed.

There it is. The choice.

“Urgh!!” Yuu sounded furious. “We skipped this whole scene, how should I know! I don’t even understand what was happening for the last 5 minutes.”

“Chill, I’ll manage, look.”

Idia escaped the game without saving, causing Yuu to frown, but when Idia entered the game again, they continued right where they stopped, the answer window still floating in the middle of the screen. 

“What the…” he mumbled. “Wait a bit.”

He opened the browser and showed her a bunch of comments saying one can’t proceed without answering, and even deleting the game isn’t helping. It’s either one managed to guess correctly or one’ll be stuck for god knows how long.

“Guess we’re in this together,” Yuu sighed in disappointment, placing herself on the floor again, when Idia visibly began trembling.

And what was he dragged into even?..

About My Blog: I mostly make beginner friendly posts on specific/nuanced types of magic, and strive to keep as much of it as secular as possible so that anyone can use them. I also post art sometimes when it's relevant to my craft in some way, usually digital art or some sort of fiber work. I also do varied types of divination; cartomancy, tarot, dice reading, throwing bones, and other things of the sort will pop up from time to time. About My Craft: Parts of my path are specific to my family's own traditions and heritage, which will mostly stay private. For the recent ask game: Korra from TLOK!!

(Idk if you’ve seen it but I know you’ve seen ATLA so if you haven’t seen TLOK yet then let’s hear what you think about Uncle Iroh)

I have seen both series, so now you get to hear me rant about two fictional characters! Lucky you!

KORRA ( THE LEGEND OF KORRA )

First impression:

Pretty girl. Muscles. Short hair. Queer.

Need I say more?

Impression now:

I love how much Korra grew throughout the series.

I’m sure many many Tumblr folks have expended on it in proper essays, but it’s refreshing to see that the writing team approached her as they would any protagonist, instead of treating her differently because of her gender ( which makes sense, in a world where cool warrior ladies like Kyoshi have been a thing since the beginning of time ) !

Favorite moment:

No surprise here, I’m going to say the ending. I knew about it beforehand and it is the reason I started watching the series in the first place.

Idea for a story:

I’d love to see more content about Baby Korra discovering her powers and her parents absolutely F R E A K I N G O U T about it! What little we saw of her at that age was so cute.

Unpopular opinion:

Not sure if this is an “unpopular” opinion, but the relationships between the Main Four were the weakest point of the show in my opinion.

I was extremely annoyed by the whole love triangle debacle, and even Korrasami felt a bit underdeveloped ( There were HUGE instances of flirting between the two in S1, and then they kinda… Paused… Until halfway through S4? ). That one is understandable, though - we all know the challenges of trying to sneak a queer storyline into a kids’ show.

Overall, I didn’t get the “found family” feel that made ATLA so great from Korra and the gang. I’ve heard good things about the comics, though, so I might get my hands on them someday!

Favorite relationship:

Despite what I just said, it is Korrasami, 100%.

I like that they didn’t let the love triangle ruin their friendship ( any negative feelings they had were directed either at Makko or themselves, rather than each other ) and how well they work together despite being so different.

And Korrasami did so much for queer representation in general. It might not seem like much when we look back on it now, but these girls really kicked the portal door open for all of the great stuff we’re getting today!

Favorite headcanon:

Many people have created great art of Korrasami getting engaged using a Water Tribe betrothal necklace. I especially love scenarii in which Asami is the one to propose ( engaging in your partner’s cultural traditions because it’s important to them is a huge pro-gamer move in my book ) .

IROH ( AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER )

First impression:

A funny old man who might or might not be sabotaging Zuko’s efforts to find the Avatar on purpose. For his own good, of course.

Impression now:

A much more complex character than I originally expected. He’s great, obviously, but also imperfect, and I love him for that. More on that later.

Favorite moment:

Probably not a surprise either: the reunion with Zuko in the White Lotus camp. Cleared my skin and watered my crops.

Idea for a story:

I’d like to see more fluff of Iroh in his later years, when he can reflect on how much Zuko has grown throughout the years. Maybe play with Izumi as well! Intimate character pieces are my favourite type of fics to read and write.

Unpopular opinion:

He’s not as perfect as the fandom makes him out to be… And that’s a good thing, actually!

I especially think he could have done more to protect the kids from Ozai ( we see him look away when Ozai burns Zuko’s face, and his whole attitude towards Azula, A LITERAL KID, makes me uneasy ). The complexity only makes him more compelling though, and I think we could all benefit from recognising that even good people make mistakes sometimes.

Favorite relationship:

Iroh and Zuko, obviously. I absolutely ADORE the adoptive father figure / troubled kid working through his trauma dynamic ( something something Professor Layton, something something Hershel and Clive ).

Favorite headcanon:

I really hope he got to meet Baby Iroh and understand how much of an impact he truly had on Zuko’s, and probably Izumi’s, lives.

I could also see him b*tching about his nephew with Mai over tea. If they can’t embarrass him a little, what’s the point?

More hooligan and now shoplifters headcanons! :D

Fang does play call of duty when given the chance too, mostly if he has no work on certain days. Hell, he may even team up with shadow if he's down to play some rounds as well, they both obliterate on the battlefield (Yes my shadow plays call of duty too lol)

Although Karl, Konor, and Jeff are very overprotective of Nic, they have their own sexualities. Konor is gay so he sees Nic as a sister, Karl is straight but knows he has no chance with nic ( he tried it backfired) and Jeff is asexual, he isn't interested in anyone.

Bark rather prefers to write poetry alone, because if he tries with the other hooligans they would try to hover over his shoulder and read it.

The Marvelous Queen gained sentience by an odd glowy orb fusing into her, that orb was a small part of Fang's mother, her personality. Although Queen is her own being and has her own goals and intentions, she acts as a motherly figure to fang because of this.

Corsen The mouse (My oc) is the newest member of the Hooligans, her brush was stolen by Eggman one day and she rushed to get it back, succeeding and taking a golden broach she found as well, but getting captured by Eggman as she was escaping. She ended up in a casino like zone and was a live prize to any winner with enough cash to buy her. But fang noticed her golden broach and broke her out to steal it, in the end she simply gave it to him as a thank you for saving her and mentioning having no where to go, this made fang feel irritated and guilty so he brought her along, he still got his money so whatever lol.

Even though they are Rivals at first, the Hooligans and Shoplifters do get along after working together to break out of prison, once out Fang covers his end of the deal by helping Nic get her memories back, after trial an error she eventually remembers her brother and both teams have a permanent friendship.

Honey The cat is not a member of the hooligans but does make deals with them in order to expand her brand, plus going on adventures with a buncha idiots is always fun!

Konor, Karl and Jeff cannot eat lunch with fang, they just get an uneasy feeling. Unless nic Is there, then it's fine!

Nic does own the millennium Falcon like her Archie counter part, but she got it from a garage sale for a cheap price, plus she's a bit of a star wars fan, she binge watch the whole series with fang.

Nic: "okay so the First three prequel movies suck ass but the next three are fuckin badass"

Fang: "what about the recent three"

Nic: "suck ass but it's important for the lore"

Fang: "mother fucker-"

But hey if Fang can cosplay as Luke and nic as princess Leia that's a win win gents, also ya know damn well fang is gonna love the mandolorian that's a good shit.

Bean is asexual as well, he doesn't want cooties, "DISGUSTANG" says bean.

Bean is a pro gamer, he has all the recent gaming consoles...NOOO he didn't steal em or anything.

Bark does pushups with both fang and bean on his back and they just count how many he has for him, Fang sometimes has a megaphone and bean waves pom poms.

Team Hooligan and team shoplifters do have videogame nights, so far they've finished Mario RPG together, 100% (Bean had to fight culex and he was having such a hard time he almost threw out the television)

Corsen spray paints and vandalizes many buildings in a ton of city's, most of them being the hooligans together and eventually she adds the Shoplifters with them as well.

Nic has no idea who Fiona is in this universe, and she's only heard of mighty from other people but never met him properly. (Same for bark and bean)

Fang took Corsen on a first date to a fancy restaurant, Yes bean and bark we're watching undercover, undetected, using newspapers to hide their faces, fuckin sneaky.

Yes Nic made the other shoplifter members watch star wars with her, ya Wana be Nic's friend? You're obligated to watch star wars, ALL OF EM.

Bark does hibernate, but not a very long time, can't leave fang and bean alone for too long they'll start a fire!
