it’s so refreshing to see people that actually like her😭
they either like riara or they just don’t like her for no reasonđŸ§đŸœâ€â™€ïž
me personally i think they’re gonna be so cute and hopefully have a lot of domestic and intimate scenes togetherđŸ™‚â€â†•ïž and i really really hope she’ll be rafes safe space and the person he can turn to when he needs someone
also they better have a lot of kiss scenes i need to see that so badly gosh🙈
UGH NO FR 😭!!
I do not wanna see anyone hating on Sofia this season, no no.
YOURE RIGHT. It’s either because 1. They wanna see riara be canon (it’ll never be.) 2. They believe he should stay single because they’re too in love with him. Or 3. They’re just misogynistic!
I need them to have more scenes tg fr! I need Rafe to be happier this season pls and thank you
YESSSS. kiss scenes pls im begging
like from what we saw of her she was rlly sweet and kind, and Rafe seems to trust her enough to confide in her. he seems to like her company.
SOFIA GET BACK I WILL DEFEND U W MY LIFE đŸ€șđŸ€ș
also unrelated but I have seen people say her character saved no purpose? YOURE WRONG.
she served as a real, stable thing in Rafe’s life when everything else seemed to be going to shit. he had no one else at this point, not his father, not Barry, no one. but she gave him advice and he took it to heart. He knew what he had to do. she serves as sort of an anchor for him, something to keep him kind of grounded throughout all the crazy.
I’m really excited to see more of her and Rafe tg. I love them with my life actually

for the AU 5+ headcanons ask, is it okay to ask for Barriscowest? any AU, canon divergence version but Barriscowest?
It’s absolutely okay! Here’s one that popped into my head (there’s probably a fic or two out there with this concept, but I haven’t read one, so this is entirely from my own imagination):
Iris dates Cisco instead of Eddie during the coma. When Barry wakes up, he’s envious of them at first, and tries to dislike Cisco, but
he’s such a sweet guy and lovable too. Barry finds himself falling head over heels, but
Cisco’s dating Iris. His best friend. Who he’s also in love with. This is a problem
Cisco, for his part, is also head over heels but feels really awkward about it because he does genuinely love Iris. Still, he invites Barry over for movie nights, trying to convince himself it’s all just platonic
I should mention that due to dating Cisco and being Barry’s best friend, Iris is brought into the loop sooner. Not sure about the details of that, but like
her being out of the loop as long as canon isn’t totally plausible with the addition of her dating Cisco
Iris clocks the feelings growing between them, as does literally everyone else. Caitlin kind of frowns about it—she’s come to like Iris, and Iris doesn’t deserve her boyfriend being in love with someone else. Iris, though
she for some reason can’t find it in herself to be jealous. Especially when she sits in on some of their movie nights
she’s suddenly struck by the realization that right here, with the two of them next to her, all of them cuddled together on the couch
she’s the happiest she’s ever been
She doesn’t say anything though, so all of them are kinda pining and also guilty about it. Iris is more nervous than guilty—what if they think it’s weird? What if they laugh in her face and choose each other over her? Deep down she knows it’s ridiculous—Cisco would never break her heart in such a cruel way, and she and Barry are important to each other no matter what their relationship is—but
she can’t shake the fear anyway
Then the tidal wave happens. No waterfront kiss because we still don’t condone cheating in this house, but Cisco dies, and Barry and Iris are shattered—yeah, in this AU, they find that out. All thoughts of confession die on Iris’s tongue, and both of them are in grief—Iris hugs him tightly and says, “run, Barry, run”
Barry time travels. Cisco gets kidnapped. He saves Cisco. And then
he tells them both what happened, Cisco confesses about his dreams
and somehow, this leads into Iris confessing her feelings to them both. Both of them are shocked and happy and also the three of them all feel a little silly for all the dancing-around they’ve done the past few months. So they all agree to try dating each other and it’s
nice
I’m not totally sure how the rest of the season would proceed 😅 but with Iris so firmly on the Team, and Barriscowest such a well-oiled trio, I can’t imagine it would go any way except smoothly.
send me an au and i’ll share 5+ headcanons about it!

For the ship ask, Ed & Winry, Aragorn & Arwen, and Steve & Sharon, please?
Ooh, nice variety! And I ship all of them ^_^
EdWin
What made you ship it?
You know, I actually can't remember when I first started shipping them? It just seemed so obvious they were meant to be, I guess XD Maybe it was in the Barry the Chopper episode in the first anime, when Ed goes to rescue Winry. But I love friends-to-lovers, so I would probably ship them even if it wasn't explicit in canon <3
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I love how they're completely on the same wavelength in terms of "I will demonstrate how much I love you by yelling at you and beating you over the head" XD I love all those soft moments when they comfort and encourage each other, when they're there for each other. The way Winry doesn't have to pick up a gun and fight to support Ed and Al - and, in fact, she shouldn't! The way Ed looks to Winry as motivation to keep trying, to survive, to make sure he makes it back more or less in one piece. The promise about tears of joy, and the promise about apple pie. They're just so perfect for each other T^T
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Okay, I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but I have this little headcanon that Ed actually does settle down once he and Winry get married, despite how restless he usually is. Depending on what sort of job he gets after the main story, he might travel for work or research purposes or just to visit old friends, but he never stays away for very long. When it's just him and Winry, he might take her with him on his travels, and then after they have kids, maybe he takes them with him sometimes and sometimes leaves them at home. But the point is that, especially once he has his first child, he determines that he is going to make sure he's a constant presence in his children's lives, so they'll never have to experience what he and Al did.
Aragorn/Arwen
What made you ship it?
Mostly because it's canon. I don't have many strong opinions about the relationship, sorry.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
There is a certain legendary quality to their relationship, hearkening back to the whole Beren and Luthien thing. I also really appreciate Aragorn's tenacity in pursuing Arwen, despite all the obstacles in their way, and how willing Arwen is to love him back, despite what it means for her mortality.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
The kissing scene in the TTT movie is completely unnecessary, too long, and should have been cut. Fight me. Is that an unpopular opinion? I don't know, but it's one I'll be taking to my grave!
Staron
What made you ship it?
I can't really remember what I first thought of them, but I think it was probably something like, "Aw, they're cute, lookit them :3" And then in CW, I was like, "Yessss, I like this! They work really well together!"
But you know what tipped me over the edge into a feral Staron shipper? I don't think it was the first time, but one of the other times I went to see CW in the theater (I went to see it every weekend it was showing ^^'), during the credits I was sitting there enjoying my thoughts and waiting for the credits scene, when I heard two girls sitting in front of me talking about the movie. When Emily Van Camp's name came up on the screen, one of the girls said, "Ugh, I hate her, she's so ugly and annoying." Right then and there, I said to myself, "Oh yeah? Well, just to spite you, I have just now decided that I love Sharon Carter to death! >:(" Which was only exacerbated when, later that week, I saw an article somewhere about the whole "give Cap a boyfriend" thing, that said Steve and Sharon had no chemistry. (insert baffled animated Legolas face here - um, are we even watching the same movie, person?! o.0) And the more I thought about Sharon, the more I realized how great she is and how perfect for Steve!
(Note: Powerbroker!Sharon is a Sharon from another timeline and is not relevant to this discussion XD)
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I love how simple and straightforward it is. There's not a ton of drama between them, it's just sweet and understated and cute. The kissing scene is so sweetly simple and beautifully done! (The exact opposite of the TTT AragornXArwen scene!) I love that little interaction in the hallway before Steve discovers who she is. I love their conversation after Peggy's funeral (especially the deleted scene!). I love the way Sharon keeps helping Steve and the others, even though it gets her into trouble. I love how, when Steve points this out, she just says simply, "I know."
Annnnd I have a ton of headcanons about how their relationship goes and stuff in Sharon's past, but that's fanfic territory ^^'
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Lol, I think shipping them at all is an unpopular opinion :P Maybe my unpopular opinion is that I do ship Steve with Peggy in the 1940s, but then I ship him with Sharon in the 21st century. Sharon is right for Steve right now because of the ways he's changed. I expect it's unpopular to acknowledge that people don't just have one perfect person for them, but rather a whole host of people they could have a successful relationship with if they commit to it. So yeah, Steve could have married Peggy and lived a full, happy life with her if things had gone differently...but that doesn't mean he can't also have a long, loving, beautiful relationship with Sharon now.

Barry Allen had married Iris West and that had been the start of the Flash Family, according to the history books. That was how his life had gone. She was as important to the Flash legacy as the Flash himself. But Eobard should test these powers, before doing anything too dangerous, and Barry was his hero, he only wanted the chance to meet him once.
And if he'd broken into the Flash Museum to borrow the Cosmic Treadmill clutching the precious scrap of paper he'd found that had the date Manuel Lago claimed Barry had his first kiss, well, that hadn't been with Iris, it wouldn't be like he was changing anything important. (T, 1k words)
The Flash (Comics)
[Barry Allen, Eobard Thawne]
Tags: Pre-Canon, First Kiss, New Year's Eve, 2000s, Alcohol, They aren't drunk but they have been drinking, Mildly Dubious Consent, I think, Barry doesn't know Eobard is from the future and already knows him, and is specifically there in the hope of a snog with his idol, but neither of them know Eobard will become the Reverse Flash yet
The party was loud and crowded. Barry could not believe he’d let Manny talk him into this again.
So what this was one of those rare occasions Barry actually got invited to a party, and he’d had the good luck of not being on shift for the evening and Manny was in town, and it was going to be the only turn of the millennium party the two of them were ever going to get to go to.
He admitted it had been nice to see Daphne again.

thoughts about the movie spoilers (thomas’s storyline, obviously)
I’m in a weird state because like, I’ve never entirely been with the crowd who felt that Downton had become a good place for Thomas: some of my favorite post canon fics have been ones that had him leave and find something better. And while I enjoy Barris it’s not one of my top ships and what I like about it mostly doesn’t actually come from canon so I while I had decided I hoped they were still together I had to think about it first, and never felt strongly about it. I was ready to add Guy Dexter to my list of ships.
But Thomas running off to work for his new beau? In a way that relies entirely on retaining his goodwill (unless I’ve misunderstood what it means to be a dresser)? I really really hope not! (Also as someone else has pointed out, running off to work in Hollywood just before the Hayes Code comes down um. Maybe not fabulously freeing.) And just... it feels really sloppy to get rid of Richard this way. I mean, I wrote a whole-ass plot summary on why Richard having a wife could be good storytelling, but that relied on Thomas’s emotional plot being a “should I or shouldn’t I stay with him”, not him being gone already. Not to mention unless the whole relationship was still an overall very positive experience I don’t see Thomas letting himself get swept off his feet again immediately by the next guy who comes along! Which I mean, technically it could have gone down in a way that left Thomas encouraged rather than discouraged, but I don’t think that’s the implication in the Official Companion Book, and also, I’m not sure Fellowes’ ethos of relationships really allows for that.
And I don’t know why it makes a difference that Lucy is here to stay but it does dammit! It feels like it’s saying “yes, this is the type of story where if the music swelled that meant Soulmates, but we’re throwing out Thomas’s old soulmate and getting him a sugar daddy instead”. I didn’t necessarily want a story where if the music swelled that meant Soulmates, that was one of the things I disliked about watching Thomas and Richard kiss in theaters, but holy double standards!
Like, okay, Downton Abbey has had a lot of tones/vibes throughout its run. And it would be mean to the people who liked the fairytale tone of the last movie to veer off in a different direction and go back to a different vibe. But at least it would be a nice switch for the people who were frustrated and annoyed with the fairytale tone of the last movie! But this seems more like it’s fucking... keeping the fairytale tone but chucking out the last happily ever after and awkwardly patching on a new one?
I don’t know. I can use the details we’ve been given to create a story that I would like watching, without too much trouble. I just... don’t really think there’s any chance of that being what I see when I watch it.

@not-wholly-unheroic
I'm answering you in a new post because the original one is already huge, hope it won't be a problem!
My biggest point in the original post was to highlight the inadequacy of this kind of literature being freely available for children and the faults of the author in the way he chose to tell the story. Also, the fact that I've never seen anyone discuss it before -- apparently there were people talking about it, but in the real world, the general audience does not know that the canon is violent and problematic. That's where my concern lies.
Peter being inherently grey, good or bad, really doesn't matter in the end because -- even if made me personally shocked and heartbroken -- my concern wasn't for myself, it was for my little cousin who might pick up this book to read and face the type of story that JM Barrie chose to tell. Not an appropriate story at that.
I am mostly questioning this book's "child" division.
About the dog analogy, I have my problems because a dog's intellectual ability is much different from a human's, even a human child. I don't think it's a fair comparison, but I get that you were trying to evoke Peter's eccentric behavior. Which again -- is a terrifying, disgusting behavior -- but gets treated as something quirky and cool. JM Barrie does not treat Peter as a grey character.
No one puts Peter Pan in a kid's hand and thinks about talking with the child about how violence is wrong, how women aren't just supposed to be moms and cleaning ladies, and how native people are not savages.
On the feminist note, every time we bring up the concern about women being forced into traditional roles, people like to repeat the: "but feminism is about what women want, if she wants to be a mom it's fine!". We aren't discussing that women shouldn't take traditional roles anymore, we are discussing that in this book specifically, generation, upon generation of girls were being taken back to neverland during the same period of "cleaning Peter's place", which nobody talks about and is ridiculous at this day and age. We can't brush aside the concern of how it gets ingrained into girls' minds just because it's a period piece or just because some girls do like it.
It's not about liking or not, it's about a problem that must be brought to light. I'm a motherly woman, I understand Wendy's desire to care and protect those lost boys -- I lived that with my younger cousins because I was always the one taking care of them, I was always the one defending them, putting them to sleep, feeding them. And I was a kid at the time, just like Wendy. I connect with her motherly instinct and bravery, but I don't fucking accept the idea of my daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter being bound to become a magic boy's "cleaning lady". The abstract idea offends me. And should offend everyone. It should be talked about even if we have a 'more feminist' character like Tiger Lilly. After all, having Tiger Lilly doesn't make all the other problems disappear.
I don't think you meant bad in any of the points you made though. You are also someone who seems very attached and in love with the story. I am too (not me crying when in the 2003 movie Wendy says to Peter 'This is for you and for you only' and then gives him her Kiss symbolizing a special thing that she's giving to the childhood personification as proof that it will forever live in her heart, even if she does grow up, even if she must let this childhood go, this childhood will be loved and cherished by her forever) -- just not Barrie's story. To me, the canon will smell worse and worse the more time passes because unfortunately, it's not a well-crafted story. It has wonderful concepts, fantastic characters, and I hope it also has a well-meaning heart behind it, but the execution was so flawed it just won't survive canonically. Disney's take and Peter Pan's 2003 though might go on for a long time -- it's undoubtedly flawed but the overall result is just well done.
I have also read Pollyanna and The Railway Children -- books much older than Peter Pan for the same demographic, and they are masterfully written. This doesn't mean they haven't problems, they do, but the work was so sensible and well done, that they just survive as canon.
Peter Pan had Disney and many retellings to keep it alive, thank the goddess. It will be these retellings that will sustain it for generations, not JM Barrie's book.

hello! For Requests may I ask 18 for Crosshair and/or 24 for Tech? Thank you! (You can make it smutty if you want but whatever fits your narrative!)
Minor Wounds
Sure, sorry this is short. I am a bit tired and drowsy from a sinus infection! I promise the Tech one will be longer since I love writing for that sly dog 😎 but here's this for now!
Crosshair x reader: "It hurts here, too. Can I have a kiss here, too?"
Warnings: Canon cussing, kissing ig
Word count: 885
Tumblr media
You stood from your seat when you heard faint muffles and curses coming from the other room. Everyone else was asleep besides you. Or so you thought. You were up looking into a mission and fixing up some blasters that the boys had broken one way or another.
"Kriffs sake," Crosshair grumbled as you got closer to the others room. Peeking inside with a raised brow. The rain on Kamino pittering on the windows gently.
"Crosshair?" You spoke.
He turned to look at the doorway. Frowning a bit. "What do you want?"
You shrugged. Stepping in further when you saw some bandages thrown about on his bed. Which he tried to collect.
"It hurts pretty bad, hm?" You asked, ignoring his question.
He only nodded. Watching you as you sat next to him on the bed.
"Here, let me help," you offered, reaching out for the bandages.
He didn't protest in any way. Watching you as you wrapped up his arm. Then patch up his chest again.
"Why didn't you go to the medical droids?" You asked.
He shook his head, "they talk too much."
You snickered at that. "They still hurt?" You asked again. To which he nodded once more.
You leant forward. His eyes wander you curiously as you kiss over the gauze on his shoulder and chest.
His heart was pounding in his chest. Eyes widening the slightest, though he kept a frown on his lips.
"Better?" You cooed, raising a brow with a smirk. He glanced to the side, then smiled. Though it barely moved his lips enough for his eyes to show it. "Yeah."
The two of you were quiet for a while. Until you sighed and stood from the bed. Fingers grazing his arm just a bit. "I should probably let you sleep." You commented.
When you went to turn towards the door a surge of want and confidence ran through him. Reaching to grab your wrist. Staring up at you with pleading eyes as you turned back to face him. "You don't have to go." He said, darting his tongue out to wet his lips. "It  hurts here, too." He gently tapped a bruise on his cheek. Lips curling up into a small smirk.
You blinked a couple times, then caught onto his words. A small smile curling at your lips.
"Oh, it does?"
He nodded in response. Watching as you turned back towards him. Stepping forward, then sitting back down next to him.
"And what do you want me to do about it?" You teased.
You knew what he wanted. He was getting daring. Thinking you'd kiss his cheek. You wouldn't be opposed, but you weren’t going to just give him a kiss, either.
"What do you think?" He spoke a bit impatiently.
You hummed, leaning forward a bit. Watching as he leant forward the slightest. "Some ice?" You joked. And he rolled his eyes.
"No,"
"Ointment?" You asked again, and he scoffed.
You raised a brow, tilting your head.
"I'm no Jedi, I can't read minds."
He rolled his eyes, "I don't think they read minds." You shrugged.
"So, what is it you want, then?" You asked, fluttering your eyelashes just a bit.
"A kiss.." He mumbled under his breath.
You heard him just fine. Your heart was racing just as fast as his, probably, but you weren’t playing easy.
"What was that?" You questioned.
He let out a groan, shutting his eyes with a frown. "You think I could have a kiss here, too?" He asked louder. Tapping his cheek again. Which you just smiled.
You leant forward, lips pressing against the skin of his cheek.
"Was that so hard to ask for?" You hummed. Leaning back.
He wasn't done. Not yet. Leaning forward to capture your lips with his own. Causing a small yelp to leave your lips at the contact. Eyes widening a bit. Then falling shut.
Your arms reached out to lace around his neck. His hands reach for your waist to pull you over and onto his lap. Fingers dancing on the exposed skin.
He pulled you as close as he could. Almost as if he were afraid you would disappear. Like you were a dream, and if he didn't hold on he'd wake up.
When your lips parted he hummed out a whine. Both of you attempting to catch your breath as you stared back at one another.
"Now it's all better." He cooed.
A small giggle leaving your throat at the words. A smile even appeared on his lips at the noise you made. Something you rarely got to see, but were sure to cherish the moment. Especially since you caused the smile.
He kissed your neck with a small hum. Pulling you down on the bed to lie down with him.
"So I guess I'm sleeping here tonight?" You spoke. Fingers finding their way to his hair. Which made him sigh and Barry his face in your chest.
"I take that as a yes?" You asked after a moment of silence.
He only let out a groan. Kissing your collar bone and pulling you closer. Rolling on top of you a bit so you had no other choice but to stay put. "Sweet dreams," you hummed. A small "Goodnight, cyare." Leaving his lips as he fell asleep himself.

WALLY WALLY WALLY WALLY WALLY
The easiest ask meme I will EVER do!!
SEND ME A CHARACTER AND I’LL DO THIS;
Sexuality Headcanon: Extremely repressed bisexual!!!! The type of repressed bisexual who just assumes everyone is into both genders at least a little bit and has put no consideration into the fact that, no, that's not actually the case at all. Obviously he's straight, he dates a LOT of women, he's married to a woman, and like who doesn't fool around with the occasional other guy???? Straight men can appreciate how sexy other guys are.
Gender Headcanon: Very Cis, very male, but I'm not one for playing with gender in general, to be fair.
A ship I have with said character: Who don't I ship with Wally??? Well, we'll get to that in two questions. Wally/Linda supremacy!!! Greatest canon ship known to mankind. No two characters will ever love each other the way Wally and Linda love each other. But I'm also a big fan of Roy/Wally, Batflash, Kyle/Wally, Hal/Wally, Piper/Wally. Magenta/Wally is VERY, VERY underrated, as far as more canon ships go.
A BROTP I have with said character: Donna&Wally!! Donna and Wally's friendship is SO underrated. He was literally, like, the only one in existence who remembered her and literally brought her back from nonexistence fully formed from his memories. And then Donna was like AM I TOO PERFECT BECAUSE WALLY THINKS I'M PERFECT. I love it. I love them. That one time they kissed was weird, but also I think they should be able to kiss each other sometimes for fun.
A NOTP I have with said character: The most controversial of takes. BirdFlash. Dick/Wally is SUCH a dnw. Can't do it. Can't stand it. In the context of Titans threesomes? Fine. On their own? No. I'm real tired of people acting like Wally belongs to Dick and Wally's whole life should revolve around Dick, and ignoring Wally's very well fleshed out character and life and family so he can just worship on the altar of Dick Grayson. I like them a lot as friends, but as romantic partners? Wally has MUCH more UST with Bruce.
A random headcanon: God, I have so many. Here's a fun one: early days Flash Wally was a mess not just because Barry died, but he was going through women a lot because he was still acting out from the trauma of what Raven did to him, making him fall in love with her, and didn't handle that well at all. That, combined with Barry's death and having no support network at all (because his parents are the WORST) led to his full asshole years and complete inability to have a reasonable relationship before he met Linda.
Also, Wally and Linda have an open relationship because they love and trust each other enough to make it work.
General Opinion over said character: THE MOST PERFECT CHARACTER EVER WRITTEN. HE'S NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG IN HIS LIFE. HE'S FLAWLESS. HE'S MY DUDE, MY NO 1 GUY.

please take this as a prompt to write as angsty a fic as u want. mwah mwah (💌 — astrid)
(to preface: this is basically just canon divergence nonsense after barry burns rafe’s arm on his bike in s1 đŸ‘č)
rafe jerks awake with a start.
he’s not sure what roused him from his (not so peaceful) slumber, until he hears the sharp knock again. it’s something hitting one of his bedroom windows - the one closest to his bed.
the room feels like a deep freezer when rafe crawls out from between his sheets. he likes the room to be cold when he sleeps - he has dreams, and dreams make him sweat.
(maybe they can be classified more as nightmares. but no one is asking, so it doesn’t really matter either way.)
rafe enjoys the cold significantly less when he has to walk through it in the middle of the night. it feels good on his arm, at least, where barry burned him. it soothes the sting that he’d been able to ignore while unconscious.
when rafe walks up to the window to investigate, he nearly keels over and dies.
because the source of the noise is none other than barry the fucking coke dealer himself.
speak of the devil, and whatnot.
rafe shoves the window open with a grunt. it opens outward, nearly knocking barry off the roof and onto the ground below. the corner of rafe’s lips twitch - he really would’ve liked to have seen that.
if he knew barry had such bad balance and coordination, rafe probably would’ve shoved the window open a little harder.
“i said i’d get you your money,” rafe says, the first to speak.
barry just rights himself, arching one brow. “i know.”
“so why the fuck are you here?”
barry doesn’t wait for an answer. he simply stares at rafe for a beat, before crawling through the window, elbowing rafe out of the way in the process.
the movement makes rafe’s arm throb, and he clutches at it with a hiss.
not sparing rafe a single glance, barry just circles the room, whistling. far too loud for this time of night.
“sweet setup you got here, country club,” barry tells him. he finally turns to look at rafe head-on, his dark eyes unreadable.
rafe is still clutching his arm, wincing. “thanks. it looks nicer without you in it, so. bye.”
barry laughs, a full-bodied thing that should make rafe want to kill him. it certainly shouldn’t make rafe shudder like a bitch in heat, but it does.
it does.
“ain’t getting rid of me that easy,” barry snorts. then, his gaze zeroes in on rafe’s hand grasping his wounded arm. “get over here and lemme see that.”
“no,” rafe answers, immediately, shaking his head. “no fucking way.”
barry purses his lips. he stares at rafe like he’s staring into his soul, and rafe wants to gouge his eyes out so he’ll stop.
“wasn’t aware i gave you an option, baby boy.”
rafe’s heart does a messy little dance in his chest, and his insides feel like a puddle of goo.
he hates barry, he really does. the fucker gave him a 3rd degree burn not even twelve hours ago. and yet. here rafe stands, eyes and stomach full of hearts and butterflies and all that disgusting shit, all because of something as pathetic as a nickname.
it’s not even an affectionate nickname. it’s condescending, and it should make rafe want to tear someone’s head off. preferably barry’s.
it doesn’t.
rafe moves closer, cautiously. when he’s within reach, barry just reaches out and grabs rafe’s bad arm, yanking him in and closing the distance.
rafe bites his tongue so hard he nearly draws blood, trying to stuff his pained groan right back down his throat. it doesn’t really work, and barry notices, but doesn’t comment on it.
instead, he takes rafe’s arm and examines it, like the burn is something he’s never seen before. like he’s not the one who put it there.
“lemme fix this up for you,” barry mumbles, still staring at rafe’s arm. like maybe the burn will magically sprout legs and run off into the night, never to be seen again.
“why?” rafe asks, swallowing around the lump that has been steadily growing in his throat since barry’s arrival.
barry uses his free hand to grasp rafe’s chin, forcing their eyes to meet. “because you ain’t in control, rafe cameron. and you need to get that through your pretty little head.”
“that doesn’t answer my question, like, at all,” rafe mutters, then winces when barry’s grip on his arm and chin both tighten.
“because i’m in control,” barry continues, like rafe never even spoke at all, “you got that? you ain’t making the decisions around here no more.”
“wasn’t aware i was making any decisions in the first place,” rafe mutters, glaring down at his arm.
barry lifts rafe’s arm up, releasing his chin to gently trace his fingers over the tender wound. rafe winces again, and barry grins like a shark.
“quit arguin’ and be a good boy like your momma taught ya. and while you’re behaving, go get me some first aid shit.”
rafe feels like he’s frozen in place, the words turning over and over and over in his head. until barry’s nails dig in, and then he’s crying out, stumbling backwards. he’s out of the room a second later, practically tripping over himself as he heads down the hall to the storage closet where he knows ward keeps emergency supplies, disoriented.
by some miracle, the first aid kit is sitting right in the center of the middle shelf. rafe snatches it without a thought, turning to head back to his room before pausing.
barry has never been in control. it’s a pathetic illusion, rafe decides. he won’t gain control either - another thing rafe decides. and barry needs to be made aware of that.
rafe steels himself, trying to keep his chin up as he walks back into his room. he’s not going to let barry play this little game - not in his house, not after that little shitshow of a display this afternoon.
barry has his back turned, looking at some of the paintings hung on rafe’s walls. rafe walks up as quietly as he can, but he knows the moment barry realizes he’s behind him. because barry’s body tenses just so, just enough for rafe to notice.
when barry turns, rafe swings.
barry catches rafe’s fist easily, and okay. maybe barry isn’t as unbalanced or uncoordinated as rafe had thought. in a split second, barry has a hand wrapped around rafe’s throat, squeezing tight enough that rafe wheezes.
walking them back towards rafe’s bed - forcibly, rafe would like to make that clear - barry’s face twists into a furious snarl.
rafe collapses onto the bed with a gasp when barry lets go of his neck, coughing and wheezing as he tries to catch his breath.
“try that shit one more time,” barry warns, “and you ain’t gonna like what comes next.”
then, barry leaves rafe sprawled on the bed, massaging his throat, and makes a beeline for the first aid kit. rafe can hear him rummaging through it, grumbling to himself, before returning with a few assorted items.
when barry kneels down in front of him, right on his knees, rafe almost passes out again. he feels like he’s trapped in one of his nightmares, with some added sexual tension to spice things up a bit.
“gimme your arm,” barry orders, and rafe complies.
his throat is still aching, and he’s not particularly interested in barry making that worse, too. it’s already bad enough that barry is probably about to skin him alive - he doesn’t need any more choking involved. unless it’s the sexy kind.
but even then, rafe isn’t particularly interested. not when slaughtering barry in his room feels so incredibly tantalizing right now.
instead of skinning him alive, barry just smooths burn cream over the blistered mark on rafe’s arm. the way barry rubs it in is almost soothing; a smooth circling of his fingers, his touch almost featherlight.
when the burn cream sets, barry grabs some gauze from the pile next to him. he’s about to plaster it onto rafe’s arm when he pauses, staring at the burn like he’s been hypnotized.
“you sure are pretty when you all marked up,” barry says, breathless, like just the thought of marking rafe leaves him reeling.
rafe wishes, fleetingly, that barry would be interested in marking him in ways that wouldn’t leave him in agonizing pain afterward.
but wishes never really do come true, do they?
barry finally places the gauze on rafe’s arm, carefully, then wraps it up in a sticky bandage. he looks up at rafe when he’s finished, finally not staring at the burn like it’s something fucking holy.
“you’re not in control,” rafe tells him, his voice trembling. “you’re not. just because you did this doesn’t- ”
“you damn right i did this,” barry hisses, lurching upright so he can tower over rafe.
it’s the only time he can, really, what with rafe being a walking skyscraper and all.
“i gave the pain, i took it away,” barry continues. “ain’t that control, princess?”
“no,” rafe argues, shaking his head furiously. “no.”
“what would you call it then, if you so damn smart?”
rafe glares up at him, gritting his teeth. “i don’t fucking know, sadism? narcissism?”
barry snorts, then leans down and plants both hands on either side of rafe’s head, boxing him in. “then we one in the same, rafe cameron.”
this is the part where they should angrily kiss, rafe thinks. but barry doesn’t kiss him. he just straddles rafe’s hips, pinning him down before closing the distance and sinking his teeth into rafe’s bottom lip.
rafe arches up into it, trying to tangle his fingers in barry’s hair, but barry just swats his hands away. when he pulls back, he runs his thumb over the teeth indents now decorating rafe’s bottom lip.
“i hate you,” rafe pants, staring up at barry, his pupils blown wide. “i’m gonna kill you, barry. i’ll slit your throat while you’re asleep in your shit trailer and you can die in your own filth. and i’ll like it.”
barry moves in again, biting down on rafe’s jugular. this time, he draws blood. it’s staining his teeth when he pulls back.
“not if i kill you first,” barry says, softly, like it’s a sweet promise and not a harsh threat. “in my shit trailer, where you’ll be sleeping, because you gonna come running back, rafe cameron. and you can die in my filth, all marked up by me, so everyone will know who you belonged to when they put yo’ stupid ass in the ground. six feet deep.”
rafe wants to argue, but that’s part of the problem. he wants too much with barry. and he knows he’s right. rafe will come running back, someday, some way, somehow. he will.
when barry climbs off of him, rafe feels like he’s lost a limb. he keeps losing things to barry. and this whole thing between them, it’s a death sentence. at least for one of them.
rafe shouldn’t feel emptied out, hollow and lifeless, when barry pushes open the window he’d come through and crawls back onto the roof.
barry turns back, just for a moment, to flash scarlet-stained teeth at rafe before speaking.
“see you soon, country club.”

My relationship to The Flash is just so very, very complicated.
Writing stories for my Earth-304d series so far was a very free and liberating winging it. Sure, I took some elements from comic runs and adaptations that I really vibed with and put it in, but mostly it was just my original reshaping of the DC universe, based on the things about it that I have enjoyed.
My approach to Superman keeps the key players and important dynamics and keystones of his story, but puts it together in a different way. Same goes for my Batman, my Aquaman and my Wonder Woman.
I know that I’m going to skewer closer toward Arrowverse canon with other things, because I really, really love Arrow and want to keep pretty much 90% of it just canon as is, with minor changes. I’m taking the skeleton of Supergirl and work with that. Season 1 of Batwoman can literally stay exactly like it is but since I’m going to keep Kate Kane, I’m going off-script after that. I know these things already, I know I have a deep love for these Arrowverse shows and want to keep most things from these canons.
But writing my Flash stories is the most contradictory thing I’ve ever felt when writing.
Because on the one hand am I literally throwing out 75% of canon - Barry grows up with Joe and Iris and Wally as his siblings, because I want Wally to become KID Flash when he is still, you know, an actual teenager and not a grown young man that was always super weird, I loved s1!Harrison and hated all the changes of him being constantly replaced so I’m going to make him just be... actual... Harrison instead of the Reverse Flash, I want Cisco/Lisa endgame, I want Laurel Lance to be a member of the Rogues, obviously Mick/Lenny/Barry and Eddie/Iris have to become endgame if this is my Flash, which also means making Eddie survive this show, I liked the idea that Jay Garrick is Henry Allen a little to the left so I want the version of Barry’s father to actually be the original Flash, which changes the overall history because that Flash was then the first superhero in this universe, I also want Jesse Chambers to be a part of this universe from the get-go instead of borrowing a Jesse and Harrison from another universe, also very obviously no LoT because I want to keep Mick and Barry in Central City - to make it short, I really am just taking the cues I loved and am going wildly off-script for the majority.
But then there’s things where I’m like “no, no, no, I need this exact scene word for word in my story or else I’m dying”, because as much as I dislike 90% of this show, I really do think it absolutely 1000% nailed Leonard Snart as a character and I am living so much for the dynamic between Leonard and Barry and don’t think that their dynamic should be changed in any way or shape aside from actually making them kiss.
So. That’s like. A really weird thing to experience while writing, because I’m currently rewatching all Leonard (and Mick) featuring episodes. I really, really miss Leonard Snart.

Why Did You Do It? (r.c.)
Tumblr media
Summary: you find out that Rafe gave the Rolex you gifted him as collateral for Barry and that was the last straw for you.
AN: again, this is not entirely canon Rafe. there’s no murder or the assault on Pope. The only canon thing about him is the drug problem (:
It was no secret that you and Rafe were the power couple of the OBX. No one would even attempt to get with you or get with him in fear of the other coming to their defense.
Though the pressures Rafe faced from his father was a constant point of contension in your relationship. So much so, you knew that when Rafe stormed into your bedroom and began pacing, it was best to let him get it out before even trying to calm him down.
But Rafe was dead set on making sure that you stayed in his life. Obviously because he loved you and he felt that you brought out the best version of him, but also because you were the only thing his father thinks he’s done right.
You slowly began to hear the rumors that were going around the island. That Rafe was getting into hard drugs and started to lash out more at the Pogues. Confrontation wasn’t Rafe’s strong suit but you didn’t want to be with someone who turned to drugs to cope.
The night of your first confrontation, you apprehensively entered the large house and practically ran into Ward.
“Oh, hi, Mr. Cameron.” You greeted him. “Hello, Y/N. It’s good to see you. Rafe’s in his room. Probably thinking of what he can mess up next.” Ward said, clearly a jab at his son.
You ignored the irritation that you felt hearing him say that. You gave him a small smile before treating up the staircase towards Rafe’s room. The door was partially open and you saw him sitting at his desk, doing stuff on his laptop.
“Knock, knock.” You announced. “Hey, baby. I didn’t know you were coming by today.” Rafe greeted you, looking over his shoulder. “Uh, yeah I just wanted to stop by. See what you were up to today.” You explained.
“Probably golf with Topper and Kelce. Kelce is having a party at his house tonight so maybe you and I would stop by.” Rafe said.
At that point, you knew you just had to be straight forward and confront him about the things you’ve heard. “Rafe, can I talk to you about something?” You asked, moving to sit on his bed. “Of course you can.” He said, still clicking on his computer.
“I’ve been hearing some stuff recently. That you’ve been going to the Cut to get drugs from Barry.” You said. “Is it true?” You questioned. “Where have you been hearing this?” Rafe asked you. By that point, he had completely turned around to face you.
“It’s been going around, Rafe. Sarah texted me, saying I should probably talk to you about it.” You answered. “Y/N, I would never lie to you. I’m not going to the Cut for drugs. Why would I even want to take drugs?” He asked. “I don’t know. To forget about your dad and his constant pressure on you.” You said.
“I don’t need drugs to help me escape from my dad. I have you and you are the only thing I need to make me feel happy.” He told you.
Of course you believed him. He had never given you a reason to not trust him before. You nodded your head as he got up and placed a kiss on the top of your head.
Your second suspicion that something was wrong, was at a party Topper was throwing. You and Rafe had shown up together as per usual but at one point in the night, you had gotten separated.
You were talking with Sarah when Rafe came turning the corner, seeming to be too hyped up about a local party. “Hey baby! I was wondering where you snuck off to.” He said, sliding his arm around your waist.
“I’ve been wondering the same thing.” You said, looking up at him. And when you did, you noticed some white powder on his face. You furrowed your eyebrows and raised your hand to wipe it off.
Rafe’s smile faltered slightly but he recovered quite well. The only person who seemed to still be dwelling on it was you.
“Rafe, where were you?” You asked. “I was with Kelce, he wanted to do a keg stand.” He answered casually. “Promise that’s all that happened?” You questioned. “I promise. I wouldn’t break a promise, you know that.” Rafe told you.
He kissed your lips sweetly and then the two of you enjoyed the rest of your time at the party.
After that, you ignored all of the rumors your friends were telling you about Rafe selling them cocaine. You trusted Rafe and why would you listen to other people over him?
That was until you went to drive Kiara to John B’s since her car had a flat tire. You were friends with Kie and didn’t mind the people she hung out with. You were good to them so they were good to you in return.
You pulled up to the house and she hopped out as JJ ran to your rolled down window. “Hey, JJ. What’s up?” You asked him. “Uh, did you ever give Rafe a Rolex with an engraving of a date on the back?” He questioned you.
“Uh, yeah, why?” You pushed. JJ didn’t say anything but fish the watch out of his shorts pocket. “Where did you get this?” You asked as he handed it to you. “He gave it to Barry for collateral. My dad stole it while he was there for a fix and I found it on the table when he passed out this morning.” JJ explained.
You looked down at the watch as Kie and JJ looked at you with both pity and anger for you. “I’ll see you guys later.” You muttered before peeling out of the driveway.
Sarah had told you that Rafe was at Topper’s and you probably broke a few laws trying to get there as quickly as possible. You pulled up and could hear the music coming from the porch.
You didn’t think you could be so angry at Rafe until that moment. The Rolex was a gift you had given him on your two year anniversary. It was the first thing you had given him with the money you earned teaching surf lessons, so it meant a lot to give it to him. You only thought it meant the same to him, but clearly it hadn’t.
“Why’d you do it?” You questioned, causing the three boys to turn around and face you. “What?” Rafe asked with a small laugh. You held up the watch and you saw guilt wash over your boyfriend’s face as he looked at the object in your hands.
“Want to try to lie to me again?” You sneered. “Y/N,” He started. “No, Rafe. Not only did you lie to me when I asked you if you were getting drugs, you gave Barry your watch as collateral for cocaine. You lied to my face and made me look like the biggest idiot in this entire town.” You snapped.
“Baby, you don’t understand.” Rafe said, moving to approach you. “What’s there to understand, Rafe?” You yelled, tears slowly starting to cloud your vision. “You lied to me. You promised me. And you clearly don’t care or you would’ve fessed up the first time I asked you.” You added. “So you can take the watch for collateral and you can never speak to me again.” You finished, shoving the watch into his chest until he took it.
“Please, Y/N, don’t do this. I can’t lose you.” He pleaded. “You lost me the second you lied to me.” You muttered, wiping the tears off your cheeks and retreating back to your car.
__
It had been a couple of weeks since you had broken up with Rafe and word went around like a forest fire. Sarah was your closest friend, so she opted on staying at your house for the duration of those couple of weeks. Just going home to get new clothes and tell Ward she was alive.
As she was getting an outfit for a Boneyard party that night, Rafe stopped in her doorway.
“Are you still staying at Y/N’s?” He asked her. “Yeah.” Sarah answered plainly. “How is she? Is she okay?” Rafe questioned. “Is she okay? Seriously? She’s devastated, Rafe. You broke her trust and lied to her. She didn’t love you so much, she’d probably be fine.” Sarah answered.
“If she loved me so much, she wouldn’t have broken up with me.” Rafe replied, just out of pure frustration. Not frustration with you but with himself because it was his own fault.
“If you loved her as much as you claimed you do, you would’ve been honest with her. Instead of making her butt of every joke for months.” Sarah rebutted. She zipped her bag closed and pushed past her older brother. Leaving him there to regret his actions even more.
Rafe looked down at the watch on his wrist and groaned angrily. He had to get you back but he just didn’t know how.
Later that evening, Sarah had to drag you to the Boneyard to the party the Pogues were throwing. You obviously weren’t in the party mood but Sarah was very persuasive.
You were stood with the Pogues as you bobbed slightly to the music that was playing. John B could see that your mind was a million miles away from the Boneyard.
“You okay?” He asked you. You gave him a tight lipped smiled and nodded your head, looking at the contents of the plastic cup in your hand. “I know you better than that, Y/N. It’s about Rafe isn’t it?” John B questioned.
He could see your face distort into something he couldn’t quite comprehend. “Y/N, what he did was fucked up. I know that, you know that, and I’m sure he knows that. Because when you were with him he laid off of us and he was actually tolerable. He doesn’t deserve your forgiveness but maybe it would be good for you to listen to him. If not to understand but maybe to get closure so you can move on.” John B told you.
You hated to admit that he was right but he was. If it wasn’t going to fix things between the two of you, talking to Rafe would give you the closure you needed to move on.
You excused yourself from your friends as you wandered to find Rafe but luck wasn’t on your side.
“Topper, where’s Rafe?” You asked the blonde. “I think he’s by the keg.” Topper answered. You were about to go towards that direction when Topper stopped you. “Look, I know what he did was bad but he really loves you. If that’s worth anything.” He told you.
You just gave him a curt nod before walking towards the keg.
Rafe was leaning against the table, staring at his feet until he heard footsteps approaching. He looked up and saw you standing a few feet away from him. Rafe could tell you were uncomfortable by the way you shifted weight from one foot to the other.
“H-Hey.” He stammered. “Hi. We, uh, need to talk.” You spoke. Rafe gave you a nod and gestured for the two of you to step away from the music and people.
“I miss you.” He said. “Why’d you lie to me?” You questioned, not even registering what he just said.
Rafe swallowed the lump in his throat as he ran a hand through his hair.
“I lied to you because I knew you’d be disappointed in me. You wouldn’t see me anymore, you’d see your boyfriend the guy who does cocaine. I didn’t want you to look at me like the way you are right now.” He answered. “And what about the watch? I worked so hard to give you that and you just, gave it away.” You said.
“I know, it was a mistake. I just supposed to sell the coke for extra cash and I would’ve gotten the watch back. My dad’s been on my ass about money for stuff around the house and I just panicked.” Rafe said. “That’s not an excuse for you lying to me. We aren’t supposed to lie to each other, you don’t lie to the person you love, Rafe.” You told him.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I-I just wanted to forget about my dad. You were right, I was doing it to cope. And I felt like if I talked to you, you would leave because you’d just see me as incapable of taking care of you.” He said.
You sighed and looked from him to the cup in your hand. “You’ve always taken care of me. You always have, but you can’t lie to me and keep things from me. That’s not what we do.” You told him.
“Can you ever forgive me? I-I paid Barry back and I haven’t stepped foot there since you left me.” Rafe pleaded.
You were quiet and hesitant for a moment, wanting so bad to be strong and not give in. But you loved Rafe even if he did make many mistakes. It was hard to just give all of the good up just for a really bad thing.
“You have one more chance. Do anything like this again, and I’m gone.” You finally spoke. “I promise, I will not lie or keep things from you again.” He said.
He walked towards you hesitantly, almost as if he were asking for permission to come closer to you. You nodded your head and he quickly engulfed you in his arms.
“I love you, I hope you know that.” You whispered. “I love you too. I always will.” Rafe said back.
It of course took time for you to full trust Rafe again but over time, he learned to heal and you found yourself trusting him again.

14 Days of Westallen Fanfiction: Day 13 - Take Me to Paris [1/3]
A/N: I haven't watched the ep yet, but I saw the scene where they all leave for Paris and so accepted the request fic that it's just WA that goes. Hope you all enjoy this opening chap.
...
Synopsis: 8x06 - Canon Divergent - Barry and Iris go to Paris for New Year's.
...
Chapter 1 -
Barry waited in the living room against the top of the couch for his wife to join him, so they could leave for their romantic overnight trip to Paris. Thinking back, he remembered how he’d first asked her to join, while they were taking a bath together Christmas Eve night. Candles all around them and the scent of lilac and vanilla in the air, he’d murmured into her ear his proposition, and she’d gasped then moaned appreciatively as she relaxed against his chest.
“Bear, that sounds perfect,” she’d sighed happily, pulling his arms around her waist and losing them in the water and bubbles.
A few days later, they both simultaneously wondered if they should invite anyone else to go with them. After all, they went on romantic trips around the world whenever the mood struck, which was often, but no one else they knew really went anywhere but maybe a drive up to Coast City for the weekend. Wouldn’t it be nice to offer it to them too? Make it a big friends and family event?
The more the merrier, right?
In the end they decided that they’d spent well and enough time with everyone having a delightful Christmas, and that they deserved to have it be just the two of them for New Year’s. They’d slink away without telling a soul, and the trip would be so fantastic – as they always were – that they wouldn’t feel even the tiniest bit guilty when Cecile, in particular, wouldn’t be able to hide her jealousy and not being able to experience the same things.
They were young and in love and still trying to bring baby Nora into existence. The least they could do was take advantage of Barry’s super speed to whisk them off to a romantic location for New Year’s.
“I’m ready!” Iris declared, pulling Barry from his thoughts, as she floated down the stairs in a particularly stunning gray number.
Barry’s jaw dropped, and his eyes went wide as saucers. He hadn’t seen the dress in their closet, so it must have been a recent purchase, one just for their Paris excursion. It was gorgeous on her. Well, everythingwas gorgeous on her, but this one was really gorgeous.
The gray dress hugged all her curves in just the right places ending mid-thigh with a frilly design that spelled flirtatious and innocent seduction at the same time. The neckline was cut somewhat low between her breasts, and the whole ensemble made her look light and fresh and the perfect romantic heroine. Her long red hair and dangly silver earrings made her all the more enticing.
Barry had to fight with himself not to try to seduce her before they made it to the door.
“Damn, Iris,” he let out, his eyes roving over her body as soon as she was fully into view.
She beamed and looked him up and down, though his attire hardly had the same effect, as far as he was concerned.
“Thank you, Mr. Allen.” Her eyes sparkled. “Coat?”
It was in his hands before she got the word out. It was just such a damn shame it had to cover up her exquisite physique, and he knew she could read those exact thoughts from her next commentary directed at him.
“It’s cold in Paris, remember?”
He blushed and cleared his throat.
“Right. Yes.”
She smiled smugly as she let him slip her arms into the coat, then swayed deliberately as she made her way near the door to slip on matching heels.
“You’re doing that on purpose,” he complained.
She laughed, the sound a drug on his senses, then looked over her shoulder.
“Now, why on earth would you think that?”
He shook his head at her, then lifted their overnight bag up and extended his arm for her hand.
“Ready when you are, Mrs. West-Allen.”
She smiled smugly and returned to him, pressing a kiss to his cheek that he leaned down slightly for.
“I love when you call me that,” she whispered, and he wondered if he was going to last the over-oceans two-second trip to the street outside their hotel.
He wrapped his arm around the inside of her coat, so she could feel the warmth of his hand.
“One
two
”
“Paris!” she cheered.
And they were gone, the only evidence of their presence being the brush on the couch Iris had been running through her hair on the way down the stairs.
Until, quite suddenly, in a sprinkle of green dust, that was gone too.

“Oh!” Cady says, interrupting herself in the middle of a sentence. “I just remembered! My cousin is coming to visit next week, do you guys want to meet her?”
“Emma?” Damian asks excitedly. Cady nods. “Yes! Is she bringing the-her
 Broadway friends?”
“I dunno, she didn’t tell me,” Cady giggles. “But probably, she said they usually visit her at some point every summer.”
“I should probably be there to stop him from combusting if they do come,” Janis huffs. “But also, yes, I want to meet her too.”
“She’s an absolute icon,” Damian says happily. “God, her song. Still makes me cry.”
“You cried watching Finding Dory yesterday,” Janis retaliates.
“It’s a sad movie! Sometimes!” Damian defends. “Anyway, tell me all about Emma.”
“Okay,” Cady giggles again. “She’s a year older than us, and she’s my cousin on my mom’s side. Um
 you know her whole
prom fiasco. I’ve only met her in person once when I was ten, for Rhys’ funeral. But we were pen pals when we were really little. And now we just text and stuff.”
“Cute,” Damian says. “And is her girlfriend coming?”
“Oh! Yeah,” Cady says around a mouthful of Janis’ milkshake. “Her name is Alyssa, she’s, like, super smart. Did every possible activity in high school, that kind of thing. But she’s been with Emma when we’ve Facetimed and stuff before and she’s super sweet.”
“Aww,” Damian coos. “I can’t wait!”
————-
Luckily for him, Damian doesn’t have to wait too long. Emma and Alyssa arrive the following week in Emma’s pickup. Damian has been pressed against the window all day, like a small child watching for the ice cream truck. He gasps dramatically when four people in matching sequined tracksuits also hop out of the backseat, grumbling about being cramped together for such a long trip.
Cady opens the door to let everyone in, and is quickly swamped by a crowd of people much taller than her. Janis pops up on her tippy toes to try and find her girlfriend to save her, but doesn’t succeed.
Everyone heads into the living room, and Janis laughs when she finds Cady being carried in like a sack of potatoes by one of the men that came with Emma.
“Emma, why didn’t you tell me your cousin was so adorable?” He demands. “Look at this, she’s so small.”
“Please put me down,” Cady squeaks. Janis heads over and reaches for her.
“Can I have my girlfriend back, please?”
“And she’s gay!” The man says happily, passing Cady over like she’s a small dog. Janis holds her close and smoothes her hair back to where it was.
“Bi, actually,” Cady grumbles.
“Well, aren’t you something. Oh, my name is Barry, by the way. As if you haven’t heard of me.”
“Barry, we talked about this,” Emma chides. “They haven’t. Except Damian.”
“And where is this Damian? I want to meet him,” one of the ladies says. “Oh, and my name is Dee Dee.”
Damian enters shyly and gives a little wave. Janis cackles, “Dude, you’re totally starstruck, look at you!”
“Uh-hi,” he stutters. “I’m Damian.”
“Aww!” The other lady says. “Look at your little cheeks, what a sweetheart! I’m Angie.”
Damian blushes violently as he’s cooed over by Angie. Barry hauls her off to get a good look at him.
“I like this,” he says. “It’s like a mini me.”
“Just don’t break him,” Emma pleads. “Damian, can I trust you to babysit for a while?”
That prompts a, ‘Hey!’ from all four adults, and an eager nod from Damian. “I can show them around town.”
“This is not a town, darling,” Dee Dee says gently. “But what is there to see?”
“We have
 uh-“
“There’s an IHOP!” Cady chirps. “And the mall. That’s kind of it until you get to Chicago. Or the lake.”
“This is the most precious soul,” Barry says happily.
“Dame, we did it. I never thought I’d see the day we found someone gayer than you,” Janis laughs.
“Oh, I like this one too,” Barry says. “Funky little lesbian. She dresses like Emma but goth.”
“I do love the hair,” Emma agrees. “I’m dressed more like Cady today though.”
They both look down at their almost-matching flannels and jean shorts, then back at each other with a nod.
“Same boots though,” Janis cheers, lifting a foot. Emma laughs and nudges it with one of her own doc martens. “Nice.”
“Precious,” Angie says. “Okay, we’ll leave you gals alone now. Damian, show us the sights.”
“It would be my pleasure,” Damian says, leading the adults to the door.
“Yes, show us to the
hopping eyes,” Dee Dee says, sounding both bored and intrigued at the same time. Damian waves goodbye to Janis excitedly and closes the door after him.
“Well,” Emma chuckles. “Oh, I hope he’ll be okay.”
“I think he’ll be fine,” Alyssa soothes. “He’s in good company, and he’s a theatre kid, he gets their
 vibes.”
“Theatre kid is an understatement for that boy,” Janis tuts affectionately.
“True,” Cady giggles. “Anyway, we can hang out in my room, if you want?”
Emma and Alyssa nod, so Cady leads everyone up to her bedroom. Janis flops onto the bed and Cady crawls in behind her, lifting her head onto her lap. Alyssa and Emma look around curiously for a second before joining them.
“Who did these?” Alyssa asks, pointing to the paintings and collages adorning the walls. “They’re incredible, especially this one. It looks just like you guys!”
Janis flushes as she points to the one she won her art contest with, of she and Damian and Cady all together. “I did.”
“Dang,” Emma breathes. “You have some serious talent, Janis.”
“Thanks,” Janis squeaks.
“No, seriously! Do you have stuff here?” Emma insists.
“A few things, yeah,” Janis says confusedly, raising an eyebrow. “Why?”
Emma lifts her guitar case onto the bed and flicks the latches open, pulling out her famous instrument. It’s covered in stickers and little doodles, much like Janis’ jackets.
“Will you do something on this for me?”
Janis’ eyes go wide. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah, of course!” Emma chuckles. “There’s room down here if you want it visible, or on the back.”
Janis carefully takes the instrument and assesses the material, trying to put an idea together in her mind. She runs to Cady’s desk when one comes to her, where she keeps a supply of basic colors and brushes in case of emergency. Cady doesn’t mind keeping them, they remind her of her girlfriend.
Cady grins affectionately as Emma and Alyssa cuddle in together. “How did you two meet?”
Her cousin turns to smile at her girlfriend. “I kind of always knew of her from school and stuff, but we didn’t really get close until sophomore year.”
Alyssa nods in agreement. “My mom wanted me to be more creative and have another skill or whatever, so she signed me up for guitar classes. Just so happens she was my teacher.”
“You really sucked,” Emma teases. Alyssa scoffs, aghast, and shoves her so hard she nearly falls off the bed. “Ack! Hey, I was kidding!”
“I know,” Alyssa giggles. “I did suck, I’ve never been much good at artsy stuff.”
“I was never good at art either,” Cady chuckles at their antics. “Jay’s tried to teach me to paint a couple times and it hasn’t gone too well.”
She peeks around the other couple to where her own girlfriend is sitting cross-legged on the ground, tongue poked out to the side as she carefully brushes a stroke of paint onto Emma’s guitar. Janis looks up when she feels her gaze, and grins happily when she sees Cady.
“You have the right instincts, I keep telling you,” she says. “You just get cranky too fast and then start attacking me with it.”
Everyone else bursts out laughing. Emma says, “I don’t blame her, I hated art class. What were we talking about?”
“How we met, dummy,” Alyssa huffs, kissing behind Emma’s ear.
“Oh yeah! So, we started off with actual lessons, but then we started getting to know each other more,” Emma explains. “And then I came out and got kicked out, which
a lot of people heard about, so Lyss figured I was a safe person to tell that she was questioning.”
Cady nods, listening intently to the story.
“I came out to her that summer,” Alyssa says. “And she said she’d had a crush on me all along, and asked me out. So we went on a walk and then got coffee and the rest is history.”
“We forgot to mention the serious gay panic I had during our first lesson,” Emma chuckles. “But that’s the gist of it.”
“How cute,” Cady coos.
“What about you two, how long have you been together?” Alyssa asks kindly, flicking Emma’s ear gently as she aggressively plops down onto her lap.
“Four months,” Janis pipes up immediately.
“Man, you crushed on her for that long without saying anything, Cades?” Emma says, impressed. Janis pops her head up and listens in.
“Oh?”
“She never shut up about you for, like, almost a year,” Emma laughs. Cady flushes scarlet and looks down at her lap with a flustered squeak. “I’m assuming it was you, she never gave a name. But it was always a tall, hot artist with cool hair and nice muscles. And I think she mentioned your butt a few times, she thinks that’s cute.”
Janis cackles as Cady flops facedown onto her bed and groans into a pillow. “How cute, I didn’t know that. But I shouldn’t laugh, I definitely wasn’t any better.”
“How did you get together?” Alyssa asks, patting Cady’s shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. Janis snorts from the ground and Cady gives another groan into her pillow. “What?”
“You tell them,” Cady grumbles, poking her face out just long enough that it’s not muffled.
“Baby, it’s cute,” Janis coos.
“No it’s not!”
“Okay, fine, I’ll tell it in a way that makes me look just as dorky,” Janis compromises. “Caddy came to my school in September from Kenya, and she had these adorable little cargo shorts and socks with sandals on, and-“
“Hold on, what?” Alyssa insists. “Kenya?”
“Cady grew up there, her parents are zoologists,” Emma explains.
“How many conversations have we had with her? And you never thought to tell me she’s from Africa?”
“It never came up! We both had a lot going on the first year and then we just didn’t bring it up,” Emma defends. “And now you know.”
“Sorry,” Alyssa says. “Keep going.”
“It’s all good,” Janis chuckles. “Anyway, I fell for her so bad the first day that I dragged Damian into the bathroom at lunch and made him let her join our group.”
Cady pops her head up and looks to her girlfriend. “You did?”
“Yeah, duh,” Janis says. “We’re not known for socializing with the new kids, I just thought you were cute.”
Cady blushes again, but doesn’t return to her pillow. “Keep going.”
Janis chuckles and continues telling the story as she finishes her small painting on Emma’s guitar. “So we became friends that day, and then had
an ordeal, through the rest of junior year and didn’t really reconnect until spring.”
Cady’s told Emma and Alyssa the whole story, so they both nod at Janis’ quick explanation.
“We got really close over the summer, and apparently we were both crushing on each other. But we didn’t notice, somehow. And then I sorta snapped on her birthday this year and decided to fess up, so I made that,” Janis points to the black and white collage hanging next to one of her paintings on the wall. “But before I could give it to her, this little firecracker got wasted and started crying in my lap about how much she loved me.”
“I wasn’t that drunk!” Cady huffs.
“I found you lying on the ground singing yourself to sleep,” Janis giggles. “And you didn’t recognize me, clearly. Just climbed into my lap and spilled your guts. I was lucky it wasn’t literal.”
“Janis Sarkisian,” Cady grumbles. “Behave.”
“Fine, fine,” Janis chuckles. “Anyway, once she sobered up a little bit we had a chat and realized we both had feelings for each other, so we started dating. And now we’re here.”
“That did not make you sound anywhere near as dorky as me,” Cady huffs. “But yeah, that’s
 that’s it.”
Emma snorts once the story is done. “That does sound like Cady. But if that’s what it took, then I guess it was worth it.”
Cady turns to look at Janis again. “It was. But you guys went through a lot more than us, that must have been tough on both of you.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” Emma chuckles, trying to sneak a peek at Janis’ work. The angle isn’t quite right, so she gives up before she falls off her girlfriend. “You guys went through a lot. But yeah, it was really tough. I’m so lucky.”
“I’m the lucky one,” Alyssa murmurs back. “You guys know the story?”
“I do,” Cady says. “I think Jay and Damian just know the bare bones. It’s your story to tell, I didn’t want to give too many details away.”
Alyssa gives her a grateful smile, and Cady grins back. “Do you want to hear it?”
“Of course,” Janis pipes up. “I finished, by the way. Um, here.”
“Hey, you stole my idea!” Cady jokingly whines when she sees what Janis has done.
“But it’s so perfect!” Janis defends. Emma takes her guitar to see, and smiles at the new lion with a rainbow mane in the spot they’d picked. “And it’s kind of for both of us.”
“This is awesome,” Emma says. “Oh! I get it, it’s a pride thing! Pride of lions, and then
 oh. Clever!”
“It was actually Caddy’s idea, she made me a rock with it at pride last week,” Janis says. “I thought it fit.”
“It does, you’re really talented!” Alyssa says, leaning over her girlfriend’s shoulder to see it. Janis’ text tone goes off, so she pulls her phone out of the pocket of her shorts to check it. Cady peeks over to see what it is too as Janis bursts out laughing. It’s a picture of Damian surrounded by his new friends, now in a matching tracksuit all of his own.

“I think your little crew adopted Damian,” Janis chuckles at Emma and Alyssa, showing them the photo of a very excited Damian.
“Aww,” Emma chuckles. “I’m glad they didn’t kill him, they can be a lot to handle.”
“He seems fine,” Janis shrugs. “Whose truck are we taking?”
“Oh, is that one in the driveway yours?” Emma says excitedly. Janis nods. “It’s nice!”
“We’ve been in Em’s all day,” Alyssa chuckles. “Probably best to take yours.”
“I call shotgun!” Cady yells, already tugging on her shoes and running downstairs.
“As if I’d let anyone else,” Janis mumbles affectionately under her breath.
————-
The waitstaff at IHOP look more than a little frightened at the size of their group, and especially at the crew in tracksuits.
“Ey, yo!” One of them calls. “Guys, come here! It’s that guy from the thing! That show!”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Trent grumbles under his breath. “Why is it always that? I played Hamlet!”
They’re quickly escorted to a large table near the back, and Trent signs a few menus as a little gift to the now very excited waiters.
“Was Juilliard worth it?” He mutters to himself. Angie, who’s sat next to him, nudges him with an elbow to shut him up.
Janis and Emma both order for their girlfriends, and also order themselves the same meal of chicken and waffles. Dee Dee gets french toast, Angie gets an omelet, Trent gets some crepes, and Barry gets the most horrifically sweet looking pancakes anyone’s ever seen. Apparently they’re cupcake flavored.
Alyssa looks very content with her large Belgian waffle, and Cady seems delighted with her chocolate chip pancakes decorated with whipped cream to look like a face. It’s definitely from the children’s menu, but nobody says anything.
“So tell us about you guys,” Dee Dee says once their food gets delivered. She looks eagerly to her friends, as if to say, ‘Look how nice I can be when I want to.’ Barry claps quietly for her.
“What do you want to know?” Damian asks. Dee Dee puts her head in her hands, clearly not knowing how to continue. Trent takes over for her.
“How do you guys know each other?”
“Oh!” Damian says excitedly. “Janis and I have been friends, like, forever. We met in tap dance class when we were three.”
“And you knocked my fucking teeth out in that class when we were five,” Janis grumbles.
“By accident!” Damian defends amidst the giggles of their whole group. “I got really into it. Anyway, so we’ve been friends forever. And then little Caddy happened along in junior year, and we kind of kidnapped her for a while.”
“No, I needed to be kidnapped,” Cady laughs. “I was a total wreck. They actually sort of rescued me from the school bathroom at lunch.”
“You were eating in the bathroom?” Barry asks, sounding both empathetic and disgusted. “Oh, you poor sweet thing.”
“I was the new kid, y’know?” Cady shrugs. “Nobody wanted to eat with the dork from Africa.”
Angie chokes on a bite of her food, and Trent thumps her on the back. “From what now?”
“I’m from Kenya,” Cady giggles. “Well, technically I was born in Oregon. But I lived in Kenya for thirteen years.”
“Just, like, in the wilderness?” Barry asks in shock. “With the lions and tigers and
 bears and stuff?”
Cady laughs out loud. “Pretty much. But there’s no tigers or bears.”
“But there were lions?” Trent insists.
“Oh, yeah,” Cady says like it’s entirely normal. “That’s mostly what we were studying. They were kind of my only friends.”
“And they never showed any interest in
consuming you?” Dee Dee asks worriedly. Cady laughs again.
“Lions are just big cats, you know, guys? As long as you’re careful and respect their boundaries they won’t hurt you,” she chuckles. “I got swiped at a few times when I was little, but I never needed more than fifteen stitches.”
“Fifteen?” Angie yelps.
“That is kind of a lot, Cades,” Emma chuckles. “I never had to get more than three as a kid.”
“Oh. Well, I was kind of asking for it, I was playing too rough,” Cady hums.
“With a lion,” Alyssa insists. “Do you have pictures?” Cady nods and passes over her phone for them to scroll through her camera roll.
“Anyway, please keep going,” Angie says, leaning across the table to try to see.
“That’s basically it,” Janis shrugs. “Until you get into the whole mess that happened junior year.”
Cady and Damian nod in agreement. The adults all look very excited at the prospect of some new drama. “Do tell.”
The art freaks all look to one another warily, wondering who should begin. Cady decides to after a second of back and forth.
“Well, um
I sat with these two on my first day,” she begins. “But then just before lunch ended I met these three girls. We called them the Plastics.”
“Why?” Angie asks curiously. Damian shows them all a photo. “Oh. I already don’t like this one.” Janis snorts quietly as she points to Regina.
“Anyway, they said I should sit with them, and Janis and Damian wanted me to so I could spy on them,” Cady says sheepishly. “They have some
 personal history.”
“Oh?” Trent asks. Cady looks to Janis, this bit is her story to tell.
“Regina, the one in the middle, outed me in eighth grade,” Janis says. “Carved slurs into my locker, that kinda thing.”
“Oh, honey,” Barry says sadly. “That bitch.”
Janis chuckles weakly. “Yeah. The other two just kind of went along with it. They were just generally bitchy to everyone. But I didn’t have many friends because of her, and I went through a lot of counseling and stuff because of it. Spent some time in the hospital for
 reasons, but that’s not
something we need to discuss right now.”
Everyone nods, respecting her privacy. Cady continues telling the story. “So, I pretended to join them and would kind of report back to Janis and Damian. I learned that they had this book, called the Burn Book, where they would write mean things about people from the yearbook and stuff. And at the same time I was crushing for a long time on this boy named Aaron, but he was Regina’s ex. She had dumped him earlier for another guy. And she was actually cheating on him with the other one.”
“Oh, can I tell this bit?” Janis asks. Cady nods and gestures for her to keep going. “So, around Halloween, Cady went to Aaron’s party, and I don’t know exactly what happened, but he basically got back together with Regina.”
“What kind of idiot-“ Trent begins, getting cut off by a stomp on the foot from Dee Dee.
“So poor Caddy came to my house,” Janis says, trying to keep down giggles at the memory. “Fucking slams my basement door open, but Dame and I were watching horror movies. Caddy was dressed as some corpse bride with a knife in her back and everything, and Damian screamed so loud, like, higher than I’ve ever heard. But she was crying, so we helped her and then came up with a revenge plot.”
Dee Dee suddenly looks very interested, leaning forwards slightly and resting her head on her folded hands.
“Caddy had these snack bars from Kenya, they’re
Swedish, I think?” Damian says. Cady nods. “They make you gain weight, like, really quickly. Regina was kind of obsessed with her weight and image and stuff, so we got Caddy to tell her they were actually a diet bar to help lose weight.”
“No,” Angie gasps. Everyone laughs at her reaction.
“Yeah,” Cady laughs. “I don’t think anything major happened until around Christmas. The Plastics did this dance every year at the winter talent show, and we had to wear these skimpy little Santa outfits. But Regina had already gained a fair bit of weight, so her skirt didn’t fit
”
“It fell off in the middle of the routine in front of everyone,” Janis cackles. Emma and Alyssa both look slightly scared of her. “Sorry. Personal vindication. But yeah, that was kind of the beginning of the end for her. Cady kind of
got lost in it, by that point. It was hard to tell if she was pretending or not.”
Cady looks down at her lap in shame, so Janis takes her hand under the table and kisses the side of her head a few times to comfort her. Damian keeps going with the story.
“So, Caddy basically overthrew Regina as Queen Bee of the school. She threw a little party and didn’t invite us or Regina, so she kind of was attacking both fronts. We got pretty mad and stopped associating with her, and Regina was obviously furious,” he says. “And so as revenge for that, Regina photocopied the Burn Book and spread all the pages around the school. I saw, like, seven fights before first period even started that day.”
“But didn’t they know that she had written it?” Trent asks.
“That’s the thing, she put herself in it,” Janis adds, now holding Cady on her lap. “So nobody suspected her. She went to the principal and blamed Gretchen and Karen, they’re the other two, and Cady.”
“I don’t like this story,” Barry whines. “Tell me something good happens.”
“Oh, just wait,” Janis chuckles darkly. “There was an assembly called that day, and they tried to make us apologize to each other and do trust exercises or something like that. I kind of went rogue and only apologized to myself and rallied the rest of the girls in our grade.”
“Go Janis,” Angie says, sounding impressed. “Stick it to the man.”
“Thanks,” Janis laughs. “But it only lasted a few minutes.”
“Damn it,” Barry groans. “What happened?”
“Regina got hit by a bus,” Cady says. Angie spits her mouthful of lemonade over Trent.
“She what?”
“Yeah,” Cady laughs. “So, that time kind of sucked for both of us. She was in the hospital recovering, and everyone was saying that I pushed her in front of it or that she jumped in front of it on purpose because of me.”
“She didn’t die?” Dee Dee clarifies. Everyone is more than a little concerned at the disappointment in her voice.
“No,” Cady chuckles. “Well, she died for, like, fifteen seconds, but she was resuscitated and she’s fine now.”
“And did you push her?” Barry asks. “We’re all friends here, you can tell us.”
“No!” Cady huffs. “I may have been a raging bitch, but I’m not an attempted murderer.”
“You didn’t feed anyone to a lion back in Kenya?” Janis teases gently.
“I’ll do it to you if you’re not careful,” Cady retaliates with a laugh. “Where did we leave off?”
“Regina got hit by a bus and you didn’t push her,” Trent says helpfully, still dabbing some lemonade out of his sweater with a wad of napkins.
“Oh,” Damian says. “Okay, so, I don’t
totally remember what happened in between that and Spring Fling, but it’s really not important.”
“I was suspended for the Book, that’s kind of it,” Cady says, gesturing for him to continue.
“Oh, yeah! Anyway, Spring Fling at our school is basically prom but for underclassmen, prom is just for the seniors. Jan and I were each other’s dates, she decorated our outfits and stuff, we looked killer if I do say so myself.”
Janis rolls her eyes lovingly and whacks him with an elbow.
“And Caddy was banned, so she wasn’t supposed to be there, but she showed up towards the end with the Mathletes,” Damian continues. “And she had been nominated for queen, and she won. So she went up on stage and gave the most beautiful speech I’ve ever heard and broke her crown, and we all got a piece. So now we’re all friends and life is good.”
“Nice ending, Dame,” Janis laughs. “Hasty conclusions. But that it is basically how it happened.”
Everyone blinks at them. Trent says, “That was like being in a war zone. Just one bombshell after another.”
“It kinda was, our math teacher got stabbed in the leg at one point,” Cady hums. “Anyway, what’s your guys’ story? If you want to share.”
“Oh, yeah, I’d like to know more,” Damian says. “Jan and I really only know the bare bones. What was in the news, and stuff.”
“You guys can start,” Emma says, pulling a face as Alyssa gently dabs some syrup off her lip. Alyssa giggles when Emma tries to bite her hand and kisses Emma’s cheek.
“Ooh, okay!” Barry says eagerly. “We were in a show. Well, Dee Dee and I. We were in a delightful little show called Eleanor.”
“As in
” Janis says confusedly.
“Eleanor Roosevelt,” Dee Dee explains. She seems surprised when the kids all nod in understanding. “You’ve heard of her?”
“Yeah?” Cady says, tilting her head. “She’s one of the most famous first ladies of all time, we learned about her in our history class.”
“Not nearly enough,” Janis grumbles. “Gotta make time for the men.”
“Amen sister,” Angie huffs.
“Really
” Dee Dee hums interestedly. “Anyway, it was
not a success. Poor advance sales, and then
”
“We bombed opening night,” Barry grumbles. “Apparently. But it wasn’t the show, it was
it was us. The media panned us as aging narcissists and we had to close.”
“On opening night?” Damian gasps in horror. Dee Dee and Barry both nod sadly.
“Regretfully, yes. So, we had to try to change the narrative,” Dee Dee says. “We decided to find a good cause and do something. So we were going to build houses for Habitat for Humanity.”
“But Barry has a bad back,” Trent pipes up. “So then we thought about, like, recycling or fixing poverty or world hunger.”
“But that was all too much for us to handle,” Angie says. “So I went on Twitter and found-”
“Me!” Emma says. “Apparently that all happened on the same night as the first assembly where the PTA cancelled prom in the first place. I guess we were trending.”
“And they only cancelled it because you two wanted to go together?” Janis asks sadly.
“Yep. Well, nobody knew about Alyssa, but they cancelled it because they knew I wanted to bring my girlfriend,” Emma explains.
“Those bitches,” Janis grumbles. “Sorry.”
“Believe me, we get it,” Emma laughs. “But my bit of the story isn’t quite here yet.”
“Oh, yes!” Dee Dee realizes. “So, we decided to help Emma, but we were completely out of funds and had no way to get all the way to Indiana from New York.”
“But I had just booked a non-equity tour of Godspell,” Trent half-brags. The other half seems rather depressed at that statement. “So we came on the tour bus.”
“Can I start our part?” Alyssa asks. Emma nods and squeezes her hand under the table. “So, they obviously gave no indication that they were coming. Emma and Principal Hawkins had gone to the State’s Attorney by that point and put some legal pressure on the PTA, so we had another assembly to discuss options.”
“We?” Damian asks.
“Oh, my mom was the head of the PTA,” Alyssa says casually. Damian chokes on his drink and Janis nearly drops Cady on the ground.
“Your mom cancelled your prom?” Janis asks in shock. Alyssa nods sadly. “Oh, because you
 she didn’t know. I’m sorry.”
“It was what it was. She knows now,” Alyssa hums. “Anyway, I was there to speak for student council. I was mid-sentence, and then they come barreling into the gym with signs and yelling at everyone.”
“Educating everyone,” Barry corrects. “Loudly and with signs.”
“Right, educating. Sorry,” Alyssa laughs. “So my mom totally loses her shit. It’s chaos. I think Trent had a cowbell at some point?”
Trent reaches into a messenger bag next to him and pulls out a cowbell, resting it on the table with a quiet thunk.
“You just keep that with you?” Janis chuckles.
“For emergencies,” Trent explains. “You’d be surprised.”
Janis tries to think of what emergencies she’s faced that would either be helped or solved with the addition of a cowbell, and surprisingly, she can think of a few.
“Of course he keeps it all the time,” Emma chuckles. “I don’t remember
most of what happened that time. But after a few days they announced that the prom was back on.”
“Because of you?” Damian asks, looking to the stars.
“No,” they all say at the same time Emma says, “I think so.”
Everyone looks her way. “I told you this at the time, but you guys really scared people! I think you at least had a part.”
“How sweet,” Dee Dee says. “Let’s say we had an ensemble part in getting it back on.”
That gets a chuckle from everyone at the table, before Barry continues with the story.
“I, obviously, had to take Emma shopping,” he says. “She only had one dress and it was
a travesty would be an understatement.”
“I’m honestly not sure where it came from,” Emma chuckles. “Just think Little House on the Prarie but somehow so much worse.”
“So we went to the mall, and found this lovely blue dress and some good shoes,” Barry says. Emma looks like she would disagree with his choice of adjectives, but nods. “Did her hair and makeup all fancy, and bought her a corsage.”
“Aww,” Cady coos. “How sweet.”
“That part was fun,” Emma agrees fondly. “But
”
“When we got there,” Barry says. “Poor thing was so excited, but it was-it was just-“
Dee Dee continues for him, as Barry gets too emotional to keep going. “It was totally empty. Barry took Emma into the gym, and it was just horrific. There were barely any decorations, and they were just thrown up. I would be stunned if they spent more than ten dollars on the whole thing.”
“Oh god,” Damian says sadly. “I heard it was a fake, but I didn’t know it was that bad.”
“It sucked,” Emma chuckles sardonically, trying not to get too heavy in the middle of an IHOP. “More than anything. I didn’t care about the decorations, I just
it was so lonely, you know? I realized then that so many people I thought cared about me just didn’t. So many people I thought were my friends, weren’t. I had never felt more alone.”
“It sounds awful,” Janis says.
“It was,” Emma mumbles. Alyssa takes her hand under the table and gives it a gentle squeeze. Emma looks up and gives her a sad but grateful grin.
“I was at the
other prom. The real one,” Alyssa continues, seeming ashamed. “I had no idea what they had done, everyone on student council and the PTA hid it from me too. Some of my friends had seen us together and realized I was the ‘secret girlfriend’ and were trying to break us up.”
“Which worked,” Emma admits sadly. “I called her to try to get her to come to my own personal prom so I could at least have her there, but her mom was at the real one with her and she couldn’t leave. And I just sort of
lost it. I hung up and we didn’t talk again for a week.”
“I never blamed you for that,” Alyssa murmurs gently. “You were still trying to process everything and I just added to it.”
“No, you didn’t,” Emma insists. “We can talk more later. Anyway. I ran out, obviously. And Angie actually came after me, which was nice. She just let me cry and didn’t make me do anything. Helped me get my makeup off and stuff. She even slept on my bedroom floor in case I needed something. It was kind of like having a mom there, which I really needed.”
“How fucking old-“ Angie begins, but Trent claps a hand over her mouth. Emma laughs and continues.
“And then the rest of them came by the next day even though I yelled at them,” she says.
“With ice cream!” Barry butts in. “That’s an important detail.”
“Oh yeah, they brought me HĂ€agen Dazs,” Emma laughs. “It was cute. Especially because they thought I wouldn’t know what it was.”
“Can you blame us? You live in the most yeehaw hick town in Indiana,” Trent says. “And that’s saying something.”
“It’s not that bad,” Emma tuts. “Anyway, they brought ice cream and were trying to convince me to do something to bring more attention to what was happening. Dee Dee actually got me on a talk show at one point, but I knew I would never be able to do something like that.”
“You still owe me a house,” Dee Dee grumbles under her breath. “But what she wound up doing was much better anyway.”
“The song?” Damian asks. Emma nods.
“I had it sort of in my head for a while, and I managed to piece it together in about a week,” she replies. “I was terrified, but it was just an overnight thing. I woke up the next day and it already had two million views.”
Alyssa squeezes her hand with a proud smile. “Half of them were me.”
“The other half were Damian,” Janis chuckles. “He made me watch it at lunch one day and we both watched it so many times we knew all the words by the next day.”
“Aww,” Emma says. “You guys are so sweet.”
“We try,” Janis and Damian say at the same time, locking eyes and glaring at each other once they notice. Cady giggles at their antics.
“Anyway,” Emma laughs. “I wasn’t expecting even that many, but people just kept watching, and then I started getting all these comments on it that were so precious. All these other queer kids all over the world sharing their stories too. Eventually it got back to Principal Hawkins and all of them, and they helped figure out how to set up an inclusive prom. And funded it, which was very helpful.”
“Yeah, helpful,” Dee Dee grumbles under her breath.
“Once we saw where the money was going it was so worth it,” Barry says, gently kicking Dee Dee under the table. “It was beautiful.”
“It really was,” Emma agrees. “But god, it took forever to set up.”
“God, yeah,” Alyssa says. “Oh, and we got back together, like, as we were setting everything up, we forgot to mention that.”
“Oh yeah,” Emma says. “Her mom came when she heard what we were doing in the gym because we never got PTA approval-“
“So she was mad,” Alyssa butts in.
“Very mad,” Emma chuckles. “But you came with her and told her to stop talking, which was both hilarious and terrifying. And then you told me you loved me in front of everyone. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that.”
“Me either,” Alyssa says quietly.
“Aww,” Cady says, even though she’s heard the whole story before. It’s always a good one to repeat. “How sweet.”
“So after that whole thing we finished setting everything up,” Emma continues, smiling at her girlfriend. “And it was beautiful, even I was impressed.”
“You looked so happy when everyone started showing up,” Alyssa says fondly. “I was so proud of you. I still am. You gave so many people an incredible night they wouldn’t have had without you.”
Emma flushes slightly and looks down at her lap. Alyssa squishes her cheeks in her hand to get her to look back up.
“It really was an incredible night,” she says. “And we finally got to dance together, I think that was my favorite part.”
“That was good,” Alyssa nods. “But you’re a terrible dancer.”
“Hey! Just because I didn’t take dance classes for years,” Emma pouts.
“Oh, hush, I’m joking,” Alyssa says, kissing Emma’s cheek.
“You missed,” Emma continues pouting. Alyssa frowns in confusion and kisses her cheek again, but in a different spot. “You missed.”
Alyssa gives her a chaste kiss on the lips this time, and Emma finally smiles. Alyssa rolls her eyes lovingly. “You’re such a dork, goodness gracious.”
“You guys are almost as cute as Caddy and Janis,” Damian says, trying to snap them out of it and get them to remember the presence of the group.
“Almost?” Alyssa says, her competitive side making a slight appearance. “I think you’re biased.”
“Oh, definitely,” Damian agrees. “We don’t really have any unbiased judges though.”
“True. We’ll say it’s a truce for now,” Alyssa says. “Are we all done? I need to get up for a bit. I’m stuffed.”
“I think so,” Cady says, looking around at all the empty plates around. “We could go to the beach for the sunset, if you guys want. It’s not too far a drive.”
“Ooh, yes please,” Emma says excitedly. The adults play rock paper scissors to work out payment, and Dee Dee grumbles under her breath when she loses.
“Hungry kids. Why are pancakes so expensive?”
————-
“Oh, guys, look!” Damian says, pointing to a window of a thrift shop nearby. “We could go try on dresses!”
“We?” Janis chuckles, carrying Cady on her back. “You gonna get into a ballgown, D?”
“Why not?” Damian asks. “I have the figure for it, shut up.”
“I thought we were going to the beach,” Angie says.
“We can do both,” Barry says, seeming strangely excited. “Wear dresses to the beach.”
“Yeah, yeah!” Cady says eagerly, squeezing her legs together a bit to get Janis to go in, as if she’s riding a pony. “Please?”
“I am not paying,” Dee Dee says immediately. Everyone else nods, that’s only fair.
“Fine, fine. Come along,” Trent says, leading them into the shop as their gaggle of children follow like ducklings.
—-
The employees look a bit concerned as all nine of them parade to the discounted gown section and start looking for ones in their sizes. Damian finds his first, a royal purple gown with a high neck and a slit that would reach about to his knee. He takes it off the rack and heads over to the changing room, rapidly followed by Barry with his silver gown.
“How did-“ Emma stutters. “I guess they knew what they were looking for.”
Angie helps Trent find one that would fit him, an emerald green dress with long sleeves and a nice v-neck collar. He shrugs and follows Barry and Damian. Angie then moves on to find one of her own, and picks out a sleek black dress made of lace and with a shorter skirt, about to the knee. Dee Dee follows with one she seems to have grabbed at random, a nice yellow gown complete with a cape.
Alyssa picks a pink dress with a longer train, since she wore a short dress to both of her real proms and wants to experiment a little. Cady picks a yellow one, with longer sleeves and a bow in the back. The skirt is short, which makes her a little nervous, but she decides to give it a go.
Janis and Emma both look a bit lost, staring aimlessly at the racks and flicking through them weakly.
“Jayjay, try this one,” Cady says, offering a long, red, short-sleeved gown that looks like it would have a rather tight fit. Maybe Cady has some selfish motivations here, but she’ll never admit it. Janis raises a slightly suspicious eyebrow, but takes the dress and hauls her girlfriend off to the changing rooms.
“They all look so itchy,” Emma shudders slightly. Alyssa laughs and takes one of her hands.
“If you got one made of something like this it wouldn’t be too bad,” she says, showing Emma one made of an almost satin-like material. “And it’ll only be a couple hours at most. We’re going to the beach, sand is itchy anyway.”
“True,” Emma agrees with a little nod. “I like this one.”
“So try it,” Alyssa chuckles as Emma grabs an amethyst colored ballgown with a big poofy skirt. “Come on.”
Most of their group is waiting outside the rooms, clad in their ill fitting gowns. Trent’s is a bit too big, Barry’s is missing some sequins, and Angie’s has a small hole in the sleeve, but none of them complain.
Cady and Janis open the curtains to their respective rooms, revealing their dresses to one another. Janis is somehow not tall enough to fill her dress out, which makes her look a bit like Morticia Addams, but she doesn’t mind. Cady’s is almost perfect, but the skirt clings to her legs in an odd way.
“You look nice!” Cady says, gently adjusting Janis’ sleeve as Janis tugs at her collar.
“It’s a bit tight,” Janis says, sounding rather choked.
“I can fix that once we buy it,” Barry says, looking at himself in the mirror. Everyone looks at him in concern. “What? I have a stitch kit, I’ll just cut the collar off it.”
“Oh,” everyone says. Alyssa and Emma exit the changing rooms then, prompting coos from everyone.
“Emmy, you look beautiful!” Alyssa says, pulling her girlfriend into a hug. “The color really suits you.”
“Does it?” Emma says, sarcastically striking a pose. “It feels very
 purple.”
“I like purple,” Alyssa hums, adjusting Emma’s skirt.
“You look really nice,” Emma replies, looking at Alyssa’s long dress. Hers is the closest to fitting correctly out of everyone’s.
“Thanks!” Alyssa says, putting her hands on her hips and popping out a knee. Emma laughs and kisses her gently.
“Okay, let’s go!” Angie says happily, having been taking pictures of everyone like a proud mom taking photos for her Facebook. Angie, Trent, and Barry split the cost among them, and they unleash their prom-ready selves onto the public.
—————-
“So you guys just graduated, right?” Alyssa asks, strolling down the shore holding hands with Emma. Cady and Janis are also hand in hand walking next to them.
“Yep!” Cady chirps.
“So you must’ve just had your senior prom too, what was yours like?”
“It was so fun! Damian took me shopping and I had the most beautiful dress,” Cady replies eagerly. “And Janis had a suit to match and it was
 she looked
 so hot.”
“Ooh,” Emma teases. “Scandalous.”
“Hey,” Cady says. “I’m allowed to think she’s hot.”
“Fair enough,” Emma shrugs.
“What about you guys, how are you handling your post-prom fame?” Janis jokes.
“Pretty well,” Emma chuckles. “Or at least I think we are.”
“You certainly are,” Alyssa murmurs.
“Oh yeah, aren’t you starting a nonprofit or something?” Cady asks.
“Wait, what?” Janis asks.
“I’m trying,” Emma laughs again. “Lyss’ mom is actually helping me. And trying to start a charity looks, like, super good on college applications, so that’s nice.”
“I thought your mom started this whole fiasco,” Janis says confusedly.
“Oh, she did,” Alyssa confirms. “But she’s cool with the gays now. She had a lot of questions and stuff, and she’s still having to work pretty hard at it. Changing opinions and thought patterns that were instilled in you from
childhood is tough. But she’s trying.”
“Yeah, she came to pride with us this year,” Emma says. “It was cute, she had a rainbow pantsuit and everything.”
“Go mom,” Janis chuckles. “I’m glad she turned things around.”
“Me too,” Alyssa murmurs quietly.
“Me three,” Emma says, squeezing her hand.
“So what’s this charity you’re getting going?” Cady asks.
“It’s called the Unruly Hearts Foundation,” Emma explains. “It’s a nonprofit that takes donations and stuff to throw other inclusive events around the country. Create safe spaces. And we also donate a fair bit to LGBTQ+ shelters and stuff, too.”
“That’s awesome,” Janis says. “I’m broke but I’ll donate a bit once I get my commissions business going.”
“Thanks, Janis,” Emma chuckles. “You know, we could use some branding. A logo, stuff for our website. If you’re interest-“
“Yes,” Janis interrupts. “I’m interested. Please.”
“Groovy,” Emma laughs. “I’ll be in touch, get Cady to give you my number.”
“You say groovy too?!” Damian asks eagerly as he makes an appearance. “These two always make fun of me for it.”
“Hell yeah I say groovy,” Emma says, giving Damian a fist bump. “Sometimes it’s the only word that fits the vibes, you know?”
“Yes!” Damian says. “See? Emma gets it.”
“I think ‘tits’ is pretty versatile,” Janis says. “You kind of look like Ursula, by the way, Dame.”
“Thanks,” Damian says, swishing his purple skirt around. “I’m gonna take that as a compliment.”
“It was,” Janis huffs. “As if I’d ever insult you.”
“You called me a ‘fucking deplorable kneecap’ on the way here,” Damian retaliates. Emma and Alyssa rode separately and burst out laughing.
“And now I have grown as a person. Developed myself.”
“It was ten minutes ago!”
“And? I’m not the same me I was two minutes ago, let alone ten,” Janis defends.
“Thank god,” Damian grumbles jokingly.
“Hey!” Janis says, breaking away from Cady and running after him. Damian shrieks and holds up his skirts to run away.
“Do we need to intervene here, Cades?” Emma asks with a slight chuckle as Damian and Janis sprint up and down the shoreline in a sort of oval.
“Nah,” Cady shrugs. “They do stuff like this about once a week. Janis knows she needs him, she won’t actually do anything.”
Just as she says that, Damian takes a hard left and runs full tilt into the lake. Janis pauses for a second before shrugging and running after him.
“Or maybe she will.”
“That water must be cold,” Alyssa chuckles in concern.
“Let’s find out!” Emma says boldly, tightening her grip on Alyssa’s hand and running them towards the water as well. Alyssa shrieks as they leap into the lake with a splash. Cady realizes she’s alone and also runs in, managing a cannonball into the water.
“What the fuck are you doing?” Barry yells, walking up on a sort of puddle of teenagers in soaking wet dresses.
“They’re being kids, let them live,” Dee Dee says. “Unrelated, can you swim?”
“Yeah, wh- don’t you dare,” Barry says, turning to face her.
“Oh, I would never,” Dee Dee says, aghast at the mere suggestion. Trent then comes sprinting up and tackles Barry into the lake. “But he would.”
Angie cackles and high fives her. Dee Dee crosses her arms over her chest and smiles down as Barry pops back up with a splutter.
“Dee Dee Allen!” Barry demands. “Get your ass in here.”
“No, I don’t think I will, thank you,” Dee Dee says casually, rocking slightly on the balls of her feet.
“Oh come on,” Angie coaxes. “It’s only fair.”
“I didn’t push him!”
“You had a role.”
Dee Dee ponders this for a moment before she begrudgingly reaches to take Angie’s hand, and they leap in together.
“Yay!” Emma cheers, delighted that all her friends made it into the lake one way or another. Some of them are significantly less happy about this, but everyone is laughing eventually.
“Hey, Caddy,” Janis says. She swims over to her girlfriend and kisses her gently, before booping her nose. “Tag. You’re it.”
Cady laughs as Janis swims away as fast as she can, rapidly followed by the rest of the group. Cady swims around for a second while she ponders her options to decide who to go after. Emma is a strong swimmer, being on her high school swim team and all. Alyssa is okay, but a bit weaker.
Barry seems to be the slowest, and gives her the best chance of success. He looks very anxious as Cady stares him down before lunging for him. He shrieks as Cady manages to snag his skirt and tap his arm under the water before she backstrokes away.
“Damn it,” he puffs. “I’m having elementary school flashbacks.”
“Better than middle school flashbacks,” Angie calls.
“Amen,” Janis says. She screams as Barry goes for her and swims away, huddling behind Damian for protection.
“Hey!” Damian whines, swimming away from her and creating a sort of three-way chase. Janis quickly gives up on Damian’s protection and swims to Cady instead.
“Protect me,” she pleads. Cady smiles as Janis hides behind her, peeking over her shoulder to check where the threat is.
“You’re so cute.”
“No I’m not,” Janis pouts. “I’m being stealthy.”
“Uhhuh,” Cady says as Janis clings to her like a precious little octopus. “If you get me tagged again I’m breaking up with you.”
“That’s fair,” Janis agrees with a shrug. Alyssa suddenly gives a shriek as Barry taps her leg under the water. “Uh oh.”
————-
After an hour or so of tag, the sun begins to set for the day. The water temperature plummets and everyone swims to shore to watch the sky be painted beautiful shades of pink and orange and purple. The adults and Damian head back to the car to go hunt for towels and dry clothes somewhere.
But Cady, Janis, Emma and Alyssa stay behind, deciding they don’t mind so much if they’re in heavy, cold dresses and getting covered in itchy sand. Cady holds Janis on her lap and Alyssa has Emma in hers, all of them staring out over the expanse of the water before them together.
“You guys should visit more often,” Cady says quietly as the first stars begin to make an appearance.
“Absolutely,” Alyssa says, looking down at her girlfriend. “This was an awesome day.”
“And we’ll have more,” Emma says.
Together.

Self-Promo Sunday: “Into the Unknown With You”
Another one shot from my assorted collection “Of Swans and Swords and Hopeful Hearts” - this one playing with some of the ideas I would rather have seen in 6x10 and 6x11, it certainly diverges from canon at that point...
Tumblr media
Summary: As Emma searches for a way back home from the Wish Realm, help comes from a surprisingly welcome source...
{One more Author’s Note: The “awfully big adventure” bit is a tiny nod to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.}

“Into the Unknown with You”

‘No, no, no!’ Emma’s mind reeled horrifically as she stared at the spot where only moments ago the portal had been whirling, her way home to her son and her pirate wide open. She wanted to scream; it couldn’t just be gone, and yet, a second too much hesitation, and the chance was lost. She looked to Regina anxiously, her fists clenched so tightly she felt the impressions her nails cut into her palms. It was all she could do not to rail at Regina, this whole twisted world, and her own bad luck.
‘What now?!?’ she wanted to demand, wanted to shake her former nemesis turned tentative friend, but one glimpse at the other woman’s stunned, disbelieving face staring across the shoreline at her presumed dead True Love, and Emma knew it would be a lost cause. Having stood beside a grave in grateful stupefaction at her own love’s miraculous return to life not so long ago, Emma couldn’t find the heart to remind Regina just yet that she had spent the last day preaching that none of their surroundings or those they encountered in the Wish Realm were real, and hurry her along. She too found herself blinking dazedly at this other – very convincing – version of Robin Hood for a few moments.
Even if her heart was still crying out for her home and her family, for Henry’s soft hair tickling her nose when she placed a kiss to the top of his head, and Killian’s arms enfolding her, she didn’t know where to go in this topsy-turvy version of the homeland she had never actually lived in, and so she had to wait – more impatiently by the minute – until one of these two, either queen or thief, snapped out of their spell and led the way

As it turned out, Robin Hood was not the sort of outlaw who would truly do harm to two ladies passing through his territory. He wouldn’t have even made to steal their jewels and furs once the same trance that had overcome Regina seemed to strike him mute as well, but Regina offered him a pouch of coins that had been strapped to her waist and a ruby ring, pressing it into his calloused palm with a quirked smile and the assurance that “she insisted, she was much more partial to his cause than he knew”.
Emma wanted to snort at the ridiculous understatement those words were, and she only barely managed to hold back a roll of her eyes, which she sensed the thief saw but let slide with a conspiratorial wink.
Before she could make an argument for trying to catch up to Gold – or Rumplestiltskin here, she supposed – or ask where they were going to find another bean, it was evening, they were entering a forest in the gathering dark, and soon they had been welcomed to sit around a roaring fire with Robin’s motley crew, and even been offered the ale and venison passed around the circle as if they were part of the merry band.
“Now,” the archer began, seated beside Regina, his boy nodding drowsily on his lap. He looked around her to meet Emma’s gaze head on. “You must be thinking that I owe you an apology. Clearly you were about to leave this place, and because of me, you missed your ride.”
She tried to shrug it off nonchalantly, not wanting to get them kicked out in the cold, or to lay blame on him for something he couldn’t have known, but instead, to her own mortification, she felt hot tears stinging in the corners of her eyes. Though her sight grew glassy, Emma refused to let them fall. “So,” she tried for flippant, even if it fell horribly flat, “does that mean you know where we could get a replacement bean and want to help us get it?”
“Actually, Princess Emma,” Robin winked, a knowing sort of mischief in his eye, “I just might.”
~~~OuaT~~~~~CS~~~~~OuaT~~~
The following morning dawned misty and cool, but fair, and Robin greeted Emma at the simmering coals of the previous night’s campfire with a welcoming grin, Regina at his side on the stump they used for a seat, looking as soft and at ease as Emma had ever seen her, her head resting on his strong shoulder seemingly still half asleep. She and Regina had talked at length the night before, and at long last Emma had accepted that Henry’s adoptive mother wasn’t returning with her yet. “I know he isn’t the same Robin, that this whole place is built on a whim, but I’m not losing him again,” she had whispered vehemently. “There has to be another way to get back
one that he could take as well
if he wanted to
” The emotion welling in Regina’s dark eyes had been raw enough that Emma finally consented to go on without further fighting to change her mind, only giving a nod in affirmation when Regina had asked, “You’ll explain to Henry? Tell him I mean to return as soon as we both can?”
“Ready, your Highness?” the sandy-haired outlaw asked, breaking into Emma’s recent memories once more and looking down at her from where he now stood at the ready. “We should make the harbor by noon, if we set out now.”
“The harbor?” Emma asked breathlessly, dazed for a moment by what this could mean. Her heartbeat kicked up in both anticipation and dread. Surely he wasn’t here too
was he?
“Yes,” Robin answered her spoken question with an amiable nod as he kissed the back of Regina’s hand in farewell and turned to head off with Emma on his heels. “I happen to know a pirate with whom I sometimes trade my less than lawfully acquired goods. He might have just the sort of thing you need to return home
”
~~~OuaT~~~~~CS~~~~~OuaT~~~
The sound of gulls crying and wheeling overhead and the creak and groan of the wooden docks as they reached the edge of the shore town and neared the sparkling blue harbor was enough to take Emma’s breath away. Robin took a step forward to lead her down the docks, already offering to make introductions, but Emma stopped him with a gentle hand on his arm.
There before them, as recognizable as always, was the Jolly Roger, bobbing proudly at anchor. Though most might be intimidated by the sight, Emma drew in the first full breath she’d had since remembering herself in this strange realm – as if she had gotten her first real glimpse of home at last. He might still be the vengeful Captain Hook in this reality, but somehow she wasn’t afraid. He would never truly hurt her – and she only wanted to be at his side again without further delay.
Reassuring Robin that she could take it from there, Emma bid him goodbye. Though he looked uncertain, the archer took her at her word and left her with his best wishes. If she clutched his hand a moment longer and a bit tighter than would be normal and bid him be safe a little too fervently – well, she didn’t have to explain herself to anyone here

At her first step onto the gangplank, a shudder of recognition ran through her, as if the vessel itself was welcoming her back aboard, shivers skittering along her spine. At first glance, the ship seemed deserted, her crew perhaps gathering supplies or unwinding at the nearest tavern, but the air around her wavered, charged suddenly, letting her know she was not alone. Emma felt even before she heard heavy footfalls on the planks or that deep, commanding voice at her back, asking who went there, that she had not gone undetected by the ship’s captain.
Turning, her eyes found him, hungrily drinking in the details; altered, but still without doubt the man she loved. The dark hair was windblown and unruly, practically begging for her fingers to delve into its soft abundance and brush the fringe back off his forehead. Though the strands might be shaggier and generously shot through with grey, it made him no less attractive to her starving eyes. In fact, she only wanted to stare at him all the more, to catalogue every difference, trace the deeper crow’s feet around his eyes and the added lines on his forehead. Those fathomless blue eyes were lined so liberally with the kohl she hadn’t seen him use for some time in their modern Storybrooke life that she almost wanted to chuckle at the effect until she registered the way the blue of his gaze also looked paler – as if washed out by too many tears shed alone and without comfort, or dulled by pain held back because he couldn’t afford to let it show.
Brandishing his moniker, and that dastardly, flirtatious mask he had long since let drop around her, to full effect, Captain Hook stepped well into her personal space. “And who might you be?” he questioned, breath warm on the shell of her ear as he leaned in, hook lifting the heavy rope of her golden braid and tucking it back over her shoulder. It was an achingly familiar gesture and he stood much too close for calm comfort, sending her pulse fluttering again, and yet no recognition lit his gaze as he studied her; the fond devotion she had come to rely on more than she could say was utterly absent, making her heart ache and crack in her chest.
“Princess Emma of Misthaven,” she answered as sturdily as she could, raising her chin and meeting his eye with as much confidence as she could muster. “I had hoped to speak to you on a delicate matter of some importance.”
“A delicate matter, is it?” he asked, his enunciation and the way his tongue caressed his words seductively had not been altered or diminished in the slightest, whatever else had changed. He stood back to his full height, fingers in his waistband, hips thrust forward and looking every bit as sinfully irresistible as he ever did, complete with that wide-open, chest-exposing red vest she had witnessed once in their trip to the past through Zelena’s portal. If she hadn’t known him so well, she might have been fooled by the bravado, but knowing his heart as only a True Love could, she saw the emptiness behind the lascivious look, the pain within the façade – the proper, honorable lieutenant he had been, hating the persona his course had forced him to adopt. Even as he ran his tongue across his lower lip, letting his eyes trace her curves from head to toe almost lewdly, she could see the regret clouding the pupils and the wistful longing – as if he could sense what might have been.
Unable to stop herself, Emma reached forward impulsively, grasping both his hook and hand tightly as she spoke, “Yes, very
but just maybe
I was meant to find you. Maybe you’re the only one who would believe me.”
~~~OuaT~~~~~CS~~~~~OuaT~~~
Another hour found them below deck in his cabin, seated at the scratched, weathered wooden table which had served him in his lonely meals for ages, Emma’s hand still clinging to his hook where it rested on his thigh, but the other reaching up tentatively to trace that faded scar she knew so well beneath his eye. Hook – though more and more her Killian with every passing moment – had scooted closer to her on the roughhewn bench, blinking in awe as she saw hope returning to his face. He appeared both afraid to believe her words, but also desperate for them to be true.
“So you’re telling me that all of this around us – this whole life – is an illusion?” he asked haltingly, not daring to move his eyes from her face, as though he thought she might disappear as quickly as she had come to him.
“Well, yeah, basically,” she tried to explain. “Or more like
it’s a possibility that didn’t actually come true. There’s this v-villain in my home, in the real timeline that I come from, who made a wish that reset things, and I was sucked into it. I have a son, family and friends, a-and another version of you
who’s my True Love
there missing me. And I have to get back to them.”
“There’s another me?” he breathed, and where anyone else would have been skeptical, he looked merely stunned, wanting. “And
we’re
together?”
“Yeah, we are,” she whispered, laying a hand over his rapidly beating heart and drawing comfort from its rhythm. She already felt stronger, more certain, even with this iteration of her pirate. Her watery smile quirked up into a bit of a smirk at one corner, “And don’t worry, he’s still devilishly handsome.”
Her captain’s eyes fell to their joined hand and hook in his lap, huffing out a laugh at her words. “More so than I, I’d wager,” he murmured.
Emma hummed under her breath, reaching out to run her fingers along a grey streak in his longer hair. “I don’t know about that,” she offered. “There’s something pretty appealing about this model, grey hair and all.”
“You flatter me, Milady,” he teased, that voice still a sinful purr rumbling from his chest as he lifted her hand to press a kiss to its back. Still, emotion welled up beneath the flirtation, making his magnetic gaze all the harder for her to escape. She was blinking, nonplussed and floundering for some audible response, when he straightened and pulled her to her feet with him. “Enough lollygagging then! I’ll prepare the old girl to set sail. It’s time we got you back where you belong!”
For a moment, Emma was stunned anew. This full-on piratical version of her True Love, who didn’t really even know her and had no reason to do anything she said, had not only chosen to believe her story, but was going out of his way to help her – just as he had ever since he turned his ship around to take her to Neverland. The lump in her throat was almost too much to speak around, but Emma managed to croak out, “You really would give anything to help me, wouldn’t you?” even as she shook her head in disbelief.
“Aye,” he affirmed, looking a bit like he was marveling at that fact himself. “I am not sure I fully understand, nor can I explain it to you, but I sense that I would – that I am almost compelled – to help you in any world or time you would appear to me.”
“Thank you,” was all she could really say in response, her wondering smile nearly blinding him with its brilliance.
“Come then,” he offered her his arm, his speech all business again, even while the pointed tips of his ear flushed, clearly uncomfortable with the gratitude and praise. “Above deck, and we’ll be off. I know someone who deals in nigh impossible to procure objects.”
~~~OuaT~~~~~CS~~~~~OuaT~~~
Standing beside him at the helm just a few short hours later, wind in her hair and the salt spray on her face, it struck Emma that though she was desperate to get home, to make sure her son, her family, and her Killian were alright, she didn’t want to simply abandon this pirate captain beside her. She didn’t know what would happen to him, if he would find something to live for, something to be part of, or if she was dooming him to his quiet desperation
even if he might simply vanish into nothingness with the rest of this ill-fated wish. She didn’t know what happened next, to be completely honest. Laying a hand on his forearm, she gazed up into his face, swallowing hard. “I don’t know what becomes of you, or this realm, when I leave here and go home,” she admitted. “I’m not sure if you all just go on like it never happened, if you cease to exist, if you wander here aimless forever
I just
I don’t know
”
Covering her hand with his, he guided the ship with no more than his hook rested capably on the wheel. “Worry not, Princess,” was his confident response, fervent resolve painted over his strong, careworn features. “We shall still set things right, as they should be. Whatever comes after this – infinity or oblivion – will be an awfully big adventure.”
