Successfully made it through the 80s!!!! There's a bunch so the reactions will be short and sweet.
Green Arrow (17-28) (1989-1990)
Its good!! Morgan showing up in 28 was really fucking funny, too.
Detective Comics (594-611) (1988-1990)
Carrying over from the previous year of having no Jason mentions, there is the absolute minimum fallout from his death in this run, which honestly sucks.
Batman (426-442) (1988-1990)
Death in the Family through A Place of Lonely Dying, absolute classic time, tho I have so so many issues with DitF. It has such a big impact with Jason's death that the surrounding racist Joker bullshit is given a pass. Jim Starlin is my enemy.
Catwoman (1-4) (1989)
This was awesome!! Direct sequel to batman year 1 centering Selina and fixing so much of frank miller's misogynistic bullshit.
The Huntress (1-19) (1989-1990)
This was so good and the art is so neat. My main gripe is still how isolated it is. Deffo makes it seem like Helena is not part of the larger dc world. The little sequel (Justice League Special #2) does a really good job of tying the solo back into the larger world.
Deadman: Love After Death (1-2) (1989)
A neat little story. The art is extremely stylised and I'm a huge fan.

Wally has grown so much in so little time! Also him making pals with Fidel Castro is everything to me. Linda is sort of a bitch and I love that for her.

Still can't believe that Harvey Bullock is a high-up in this secret government spy organization, how did that even happen??? A sort of mid comic overall but is pretty important for suicide squad

Chris kept showing up in Checkmate and referencing this mini so I went ahead and read it. This man is not okay y'all.

I will be honest I broke down and read this because in the Janus Directive issue he had contact with Oracle. It is pretty good tho!!

I'm sorta sad about the elemental direction that this goes. It defeats the whole purpose of the Nuclear Man. They've been consistently depowering him as time goes on and this seems like the last nail in the coffin. The Nuclear powers were so cool and different! Changing that to another guy with fire powers is just disappointing.
Doom Patrol (17-29) (1989-1990)
Grant Morrison picked this up and dang it got very cool very fast. Jane i love all 70 of u!
Animal Man (6-23) (1989-1990)
This got So Cool and meta holy shit talk about your direct coie references and forth wall breaking. I honestly was Not expecting what happened to his family tho. Hugely recommend.
Starman (5-18) (1989-1990)
I really like Will he's a total sweetheart. And it's nice to have Bats and Supes show up and encourage and approve of new heros.
Wonder Woman (25-57) (1989-1991)
Barbara Minerva ur a legend. Also got to meet the Amazon's of Bana-Mighdall which was fun. I really like how much of a little brat Vanessa is, she feels just like a real middle schooler.
New Gods (1-28) (1989-1991)
Starts off with Jim Starlin (my enemy) teaming up with Mark Evanier to have Orion commit genocide in the first five issues. It can only go up from there because it hit rock bottom. Some interesting talk of the fixed nature's of the gods of new genesis and apokolips that I did like.
Mister Miracle (1-28) (1989-1991)
V. Funny. I love how Scott is 90% of Barda's impulse control. Also Shilo came back!! Best boy Shilo studying physics as his side gig from escape artistry!
Justice League International/Justice League America (22-50) (1989-1991)
I enjoy having the justice league titles as humor comics, but I wish that it didn't come with a sincerity allergy. You can be funny and sincere i prommy! It got close at Scott's funeral, which was nice to see tho.
Justice League Europe (1-25) (1989-1991)
Crimson Fox is super interesting, she is doing some wildly deranged shit I love them.
Martian Manhunter (1-4) (1988)
I'm generally not a fan of things that are like: everything u thought u knew about urself is a lie, this is the actual truth of u and ur culture. It's such an extreme way to do a retcon that it gets really clumsy really easy. This is an example of a good way to do it, with added totally gorgeous art. I recommend it.
Hawk & Dove (1-13) (1989-1990)
Dove is everything to me, I love her as much as I can't fucking stand Hawk holy shit that guys an asshole. Luckily the narrative agrees.

yeah I mean one of the two options. Either it was a professional in the field who knew better well how to use Vegas/premiere pro, but had no conception of modern social media filesizes at the time, or more likely actually, started with extremely high fidelity marketing material and converted straight to gif (we could see if I downloaded the file but I'm busy lol), or equally likely, someone using a dogshit online tool, of the kind that was available in 2014 or w/e

David is genuinely happy and excited to be in the Indycar series and it shows. He is enthusiastic, ready to participate in any social media activity, even the embarrassing ones. Despite driving for a team on the lower end of the budget scale, David has shown remarkable results on occasion and always expresses awe to find himself racing against the big names and big teams of the series. His talent is undeniable at just 21 years old and we will be watching his career with great interest for many years to come.
Look, I’m trying to be objective about him but he’s so stinking cute and fun and I think everyone should adore him. As a friend said, just a cute little fairy creature who decided to be a racecar driver for whatever reason. He’s all happiness and sunshine and it’s rare to see him sad or upset.

However, due to not knowing how to handle him, Nova was bounced around and eventually, ended up drifting between relatives homes, couch-surfing with friends or simply sleeping on the streets. ● At fifteen, after getting involved with the wrong people, a robbery Nova was a part of went wrong and he was charged with felony murder. They had never had a weapon or touched anyone, but due to their involvement with the original crime, they were charged as an adult and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. ● Nova graduated high school on their own while in juvenile detention and even helped tutor and push other kids to do the same but once he reached eighteen and was transferred to an actual prison, something shifted within them and they gave up on themselves. ● A mentor from Mensa who had known Nova since he was a child refused to give up on him, visiting monthly and attempting to encourage him to continue fighting for the future he'd planned and when Nova was finally released, they used their connection as an alumni of Ogden to get Nova a spot despite their background. ● A sparks seems to have lightened back within Nova; he's brighter than he has been in the past four years, attending classes and excelling as they had been as a child but even they're not entirely sure what they want for their future or if their dream is any longer worth pursuing.

While most of the life of a star is stable, as it burns through its fuel and begins to cool, the outward forces of pressure drop until it's low enough for gravity to take over and cause it's collapse — a supernova. It's chaotic, bright, powerful, beautiful. It's also essential to life, a source of elements including the very iron in your blood and in their wake, can leave either a black hole or a new star. Balance was taken from Nova a decade ago, forcing them to drop further and further downwards, a decline they had long since lost control of until gravity or fate intervened. What was becoming a shell of the luminary Nova had once been was thrown into chaos; a new world, a new environment and perhaps, a new start. Chaotic, bright, powerful, beautiful. It was essential to his survival, his life. The only question that remains, what will be left in their wake?
RELATIONSHIP TO GREER;
Nova's relationships to Greer seems to exist more on a hypothetical than any reality. Their arrival was meant to be a new and exciting change, a return to the life they were meant to have, one that ended up all but cloaked by the darkness of Greer's missing status. It seemed to be everyone's focus and to some degree, Nova was thankful for it, his arrival able to slip mostly under the radar. After all, who held interest in your story when the school's golden girl had up and vanished?

I'm pretty suspicious of this.
First, while it pretty clearly looks designed to have each color band be the same size, there are multiple locations (for example, around #4 from the left) that are the width of two color bands, but have the exact same pixel color (hex code #ca70f6 in this case).
This also speaks to my second point, other technical issues. The image is a JPEG, which uses lossy compression guessing at what humans will be able to see. You wouldn't want to do a hearing fidelity test over a phone line, for example. In addition, I see the post is from 2015, and monitors have changed since then, so the number thresholds wouldn't necessarily hold.
Third, moving into the claims involved, 25% sounds way too high to me. At that level, even accounting for things like "It only presents in people with two X chromosomes and they are more likely to be ignored by doctors," it shouldn't be at all difficult to pin down, while the research I've seen all demonstrates minimal effects, suggesting either a small percentage of the population or it doesn't really impact vision to a serious degree. This 2019 paper says that the genes might be fairly common, but still had a lot of difficulty measuring an effect (https://vision.psychol.cam.ac.uk/jdmollon/papers/JordanMollon2019Tetrachromacy.pdf) For a less scientific case, consider the XKCD color survey in 2010. One finding was that self-identified men and women did not have a statistically significant difference in differentiating colors. If you believe this post, then there should have been an easily-measurable effect from the tetrachromatic population (https://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/).
Fourth, on the topic of sources, the source here appears to be a LinkedIn article, which is a bad sign to start with. The paper it cites is from 2001, which is strange next to the language about this being "recent", and also makes it odd that further studies like the one I posted have had such difficulty measuring an effect.
Finally, as a fifth, anecdotal point, I easily saw 37 colors, and according to one of those data-selling DNA companies, I have XY chromosomes as I would expect. That doesn't fit with any of the studies which are pretty confident that the mutation is only possible for people with only X chromosomes.
I'm sorry to be down on this. It's a fun idea, but I'm not buying it.

Given the sudden interest for the color of dresses and vision, here some of the fascinating findings we did recently.
The color nuances we see depend on the number and distribution of cones (=color receptors) in our eye. You can check this rainbow: how many color nuances do you count?
You see less than 20 color nuances: you are a dichromats, like dogs, which means you have 2 types of cones only. You are likely to wear black, beige, and blue. 25% of the population is dichromat.
You see between 20 and 32 color nuances: you are a trichromat, you have 3 types of cones (in the purple/blue, green and red area). You enjoy different colors as you can appreciate them. 50% of the population is trichromat.
You see between 33 and 39 colors: you are a tetrachromat, like bees, and have 4 types of cones (in the purple/blue, green, red plus yellow area). You are irritated by yellow, so this color will be nowhere to be found in your wardrobe. 25% of the population is tetrachromat.
You see more than 39 color nuances: come on, you are making up things! there are only 39 different colors in the test and probably only 35 are properly translated by your computer screen anyway :)
It is highly probable that people who have an additional 4th cone do not get tricked by blue/black or white/gold dresses, no matter the background light ;)

German seminarian: “The Virgin Mary saved me from a virtual life”
Elias is the oldest of four brothers. He was born on April 25, 2001, in Friedberg, Germany, but has always lived in Mering, a small town in Bavaria. His parents grew up on farms in small towns, in very Catholic families, and he owes his faith to them.
When Elias Baier started high school, his life took another turn and things got worse. «I started to have worse and worse grades and in the end I no longer studied at home. If at first I continued to devour tons of books, especially adventure books, now I spent my time in front of the computer. This made me increasingly incapable of having good relationships until, at the age of 16, I felt quite alone, hiding more and more in the virtual world », he admits openly.
The Scouts saved him from that dangerous slope.A two-week trip to Rome, enjoying the sprawling hills, mountain walks into the city (despite the heat), and glimpses of the Vatican, were the lifeline Baier needed at the time. There they were consecrated to the Virgin in the church of Santa María la Mayor, the mother church of all Marian churches.
«In this consecration, we promised to try to pray at least one mystery of the rosary every day. I really wanted to take it seriously. In the end, the first week after the camp, I didn’t even pray a mystery a day… Maybe you know those good resolutions that are made during retreats, but when you return home you fail horribly. I want to encourage you, especially young people, to try anyway, because my story does not end here.
The Virgin took this consecration very seriously, and he began to transform his entire life. In the following months, a large group of friends was born, and, at that time, it was crucial for him to have Catholic friends. “I am sure that without them, I would not be in the seminary now,” he insists.
This change was impressive because the Virgin and the rosary helped him abandon computer games, and instead he began doing parkour – a sport that consists of overcoming obstacles as quickly as possible, usually in cities -, he became interested in photography and returned to reading.
In 2019, he finished high school and still didn’t really know what to do with his life. He decided to take a year off to explore the world. (...) During his sabbatical year, he also worked as a tinsmith in Uruguay, in a mission of the community of which he is now a part: Work of Jesus High Priest. And they were the most beautiful weeks of his life, even though he could only communicate with people with his hands, a few words in English and a little Spanish that they taught him. But they immediately made him feel at home.
«I made good friends with some of the young people. I was impressed by their example of authentic Christian living, by the joy they spread, by their simplicity, by their fidelity to going to Mass every day. I spent a lot of time in prayer and, after the first few weeks, God gave me clarity about my vocation to be a priest. All the reasons against the priesthood disappeared, and the desire to live only for God and for everyone to enter Heaven remained.
Back home, a few months later, at a retreat, Elias decided to do a year of discernment in the Work of Jesus High Priest community because, in addition, with his family they always went to the family gatherings organized by this community. “By getting to know it better in Uruguay, I really liked their way of doing mission work, the family spirit and the spirituality of intimate love for Mary and the Eucharist.”
“After two years, I began my studies in Philosophy at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, and I am very grateful for what I can learn here every day. I do not regret a single day of this path of formation to be a priest. God has always given me what I needed. Obviously, there are difficult moments, but suddenly God takes you back and fills your heart with his love. Finally, I want to thank Mary for bringing me here, where I am now; she who has always guided me, who is always close to me and to all of you, dear friends and benefactors.”

This has been something of a journey in thinking about how to archive, why, what, and the ultimate job of someone like me, trying to share a representation of a thing.
The original 2001 scans were not made with archives in mind. It's just not what we were about. What it was about was that back then, ANY artwork you saw online likely had to be scanned from an artbook, screencapped, or otherwise made from some other original--digitizing content was still new and unusual--although not unheard of.
(The other large batch of Saito's art available at the time was a CD-ROM!!! The Chiho Saito Key Art Gallery CD-ROM included video commentary on some key pieces, which WE DID IN FACT GET TRANSLATED, CHECK OUT CHIHO SAITO'S AWKS 1998 CD-ROM COMMENTARY YEP IT'S LIKE THAT. It struggled with the same thing I did--digitally representing artwork at the time was not as easy, and tended to result in some truly horrendous images.)
Anyway, back then, the goal was less to flawlessly represent the product and more to flawlessly present artwork for use in digital projects--essentially, my goal was to create clean and perfect raws from which to create websites, winamp skins, etc. That goal, combined with the general lack of capacity to do better, means that my original scans of this artbook are like over-compressed audio. To look good on the screens of the day, the images were over-saturated and the blacks and whites, highs and lows so to speak, got cut off. Also, the file sizes were a concern at the time, resulting in a willingness to lose those fine details for a version that could be distributed online. (Obviously also it's a resolution thing--but not much needs to be said about 1250px holding less information than 10000.)
This time, the goal is fidelity to the actual artwork by Chiho Saito. This is probably a controversial choice from a strict archival perspective--I *should* be trying to flawlessly represent the actual pages of the book:
And sure. That'd still be amazing, and more 'honest.' However, I am not an archiver, I'm a hobbyist doing what I fuckin' want, and what I want is the best means to celebrate the absolutely incredible talent of Chiho Saito, as an artist, using the means available to me: incredibly high quality print reproductions of her work, and incredibly powerful imaging tools and experience to tease the most information about the original from the print given to me. Essentially? COMPUTER. ENHANCE.
This is like, maybe a square inch or two or actual content as she painted it. But you can zoom in so far now that you can see how the white strokes, the final touches, never create solid lines--the touch is that light, over a very lightly rippled surface. You can see the rainbow of colors she uses to create the depth of the folds in the cloth, and you can even tease out how they got layered. IDK, I don't really fuck with any other fandoms, but I do think this level of fidelity is rare to see in digital representations of manga artwork that predates profession transfer for digital releases. (And even then--you rarely get your official manga artwork in 10k.)
Sure, I could give you the print moire versions of these, but in a digital format, where you can zoom in far beyond the illusion the print moire creates on paper, the details in the information become fundamentally lost to the eye. I've learned a lot over the years about finding those details, knowing how to tease out scan dust from what's actually there, and so on and so forth. I guess, as someone who has spent over 20 years photoshopping, archiving production artwork, scanning tens of thousands of pages, and also as someone who has seen some of these originals in person... this is an ultimate use of my skills to create something no one else is likely to do, including the creators of the work.

Chiho Saito's Illustration Collection artbook is the highest-quality visual media in the Utenaverse. Oversized, single-sided, heavy pages with extremely high quality printing. It is the first artbook I ever scanned.
In 2001, the average screen resolution was 800x600, and I delivered a 1250px wide collection that for a while, took $60 A MONTH to host, because no normal website was hosting images of this ludicrous size. It took my scanner almost an hour to capture a third of each page. I spent months piecing the scans together in Photoshop. It was one of my first true Utena labors of love, and the result is that for decades, these copies have been the definitive copies of Chiho Saito's artwork on the internet. For a very long time, even kinda now, if you see these images, they're probably my scans.
But decades have passed, and I've never been happy with these results, because they couldn't capture the fine details, the paint spills, the sketch beneath poking out, the brilliant use of gradients of dark color to pop the image but drive me insane. What I am finishing up now is a true, archival copy of the artbook. One that delivers such high resolution, that these can print posters larger than the originals, and thanks to some truly brilliant descreening tech, (Thank you Sattva) I've been able to dig up fine details in the work that the printing obscured, but undeniably included.
It's been over 20 years, and it shows. 1250px? Nah, my archive copies are 15,000px wide. I can't wait to finish this and share it with the world. <3
