Wren glanced over at Tanya as they frosted cupcakes together for the party. She’d been wanting to bring something up all day but couldn’t quite find the right words. Guilt had been nagging at her, knowing they hadn’t talked much about the baby, and Archer’s visit to speak with her and Calvin only made it worse. Thinking back to her own last pregnancy, she couldn't imagine surviving the kind of experience Tanya had been through.

“How’s the baby?” Wren finally asked Tanya, breaking what felt like an eternity of silence. Tanya shrugged, keeping her focus on the cupcake. “He’s fine,” she replied simply. Wren let out a soft sigh and set her cupcake down. “Tan…” she said gently, drawing Tanya’s attention. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry that we haven’t been on good terms since Archer’s overdose. Calvin and I took sides when we shouldn’t have, and we both feel terrible. We’re not mad at you. I just wish I’d been a better friend—you deserved better.” Her apology hung in the air, and Tanya gave her a small smile, eyes welling up with tears.

“It’s been so hard,” Tanya admitted, her voice trembling. “I feel like I’ve been so alone in all of this. Archer and I talk about it now, but it’s still not the same.” She swallowed, her emotions spilling over. “I know I messed up, and I probably don’t deserve anything, but I just wish I could have celebrated this last pregnancy. No one wants to talk about it with me. Archer’s mom won’t even speak to me. She blames me for her son almost dying, and she’s right—it is my fault. But she’s the only mom I have left, and she won’t even answer my texts.” The words kept flowing, as if a dam had broken. “And I don’t even know where we’re going to put the baby. I want to move because I still can’t use our bathroom without wincing, but buying a house right now would be insane. I have all these dreams of a nursery for him, and I can’t make any of them happen. I don’t even have his name picked out. I want to name him Everett, but I don’t think Archer would like that name.” Tanya’s voice cracked. “I’m freaking out. Every time I try talking to my husband, he just says we’ll figure it out, but we don’t have time.” Her hand drifted to her belly, her anxiety palpable as she neared her last trimester.

Wren felt a deep sadness hearing how much Tanya had been struggling and regretted not being there for her sooner. But she was grateful Tanya had finally opened up. “Okay, let’s break this down,” Wren said gently. “First, Archer’s mom will come around. She’s going to want to see her new grandbaby. And you guys had Izzy in your room when she was first born, right? You can do that again, and it’ll buy you a couple of months.” She offered a small smile, hoping to reassure Tanya. “And Archer? He’s thrilled to have a son. Don’t keep things to yourself anymore. You don’t need his permission to talk about the baby—he’s just as much yours as he is his. Celebrate this last trimester, talk about your baby as much as you want.” Wren’s eyes softened. “I love you, Tanya. We all do. You’re not alone in this, and we’d never let you be.” She hid the knowledge of the surprise baby shower they were planning, hoping it would make Tanya feel even more supported.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!
