Yi City makes so little sense because it is both:
1- an IMPORTANT ECONOMIC HUB of funerary crafts that thrive on such a specific market, which is only possible if it is the best of the best (hence, gets enough province-wide recognition that this kind of craft alone becomes a sustainable source of income),
2- and a DEAD TOWN with terrible feng-shui, short life expectancies and so little contact with the outside world that nobody missed them or even realized that the population had been decimated within a decade.
THE ONLY WAY for both these seemingly mutually exclusive facts to be true, is that Yi City was in a dual rivalling oligopoly of funerary crafts with some other town in the same region (think Cocacola and Pepsi, McDonnalds and Burger King, but with coffins), and therefore they were originally well-off in terms of demand, but there was a big and competent source of offer to make up easily for their disappearance. They sold well their wares, but were not missed afterwards ‘cause someone smoothly took over their share of the market.
The now very rich citizens of Tombstone must have a whole shrine dedicated to Xue Yang, that’s what I’m saying.

Broken Roofs and Fixed Perspectives
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#xue yang#xiao xingchen#Lots of cut content notes on this one. Lets all have a moment of silence for all the cut A-Qing's in each perspective.#particularly ripped and buff 'Daozhang Defender 'A-Qing (her perspective)#funny but poor layout#XY also had a red arrow pointed at him in his own POV that said 'just troubled' but it made the panel too cluttered.#He does see himself as troubled and uses that to justify his actions#but I also think there is room for him to not really know exactly how to feel about himself in this situation#Yi-city is such a fantastic tragedy for so many reasons and you will bear witness to me rambling about it in the tags as this arc continues#Helping a blind man fix a roof? A manipulative act of building trust or genuine display of wanting to collaberate?#XY and A-qing have experience of the cruelty of the world where as xxc has blind (haha) faith that kindness prevails#These three simultaneous know each other more than the other's think and *yet* completely miss the mark.#the stories they tell in the blizzard (and the reactions they have) so perfectly display who these characters are#Both xxc and xy tell stories about unfair cruelty. To xxc it is others who's suffering is highlighted. XY highlight's his own.#A-qing understands xue yang more that she wants to admit. She predicts the twists in xy's story and empathizes with the hurt and anger#A-qing is also taking advantage of xxc! She is also lying to survive!#Though shes mostly benign in her intentions. She really did vibe check the rank stank on XY's soul on the spot#Alas...no one listens to teen girls....

Whenever I think about xuexiao, I always ponder over to which extent Xue Yang was aware of his own emotions. Did he even comprehend that he is capable of loving someone or has he been experiencing something wild without ever stopping to reflect on it? Whatever the answer is, I like to believe that there was a stage somewhere in first half of their domestic bliss, where Xue Yang was completely oblivious. He got to the point where he didn’t want to see Xiao Xingchen sad and always tried to cheer him up, but his sole reasoning behind it was “daozhang looks prettier when he smiles”. And yet the “prettiest” moment Xue Yang’s brain has registered was when he told a joke that made Xiao Xingchen laugh (with lots of wheezing and snorting) so hard he fell off the bench he was sitting on.

Sect Leader Ouyang is just being overcome by dramatic relatives? He thought that just having a dramatic son was bad enough, but no! Some of his daughters are dramatic messes too! One of them is even a dramatic lesbian mess! Some of his in-laws and grandkids are dramatic too.
And if that wasn't enough, he eventually finds out that one of his nephews is Xiao-Yu's father and thus on Very Bad Terms with Hanguang-jun. SLO has no idea what to do at this point.

This needs more attentionÂ đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł
You know, it occurs to me that Xue Yang, by defaulting straight to MURDER as his revenge against XXC after being freed from prison, missed a great opportunity - cause thanks to the Jin he has no charges against him. He could just show up in front of XXC and SL and annoy them and they can't do jack shit to him unless they catch him doing something actually ILLEGAL. They travel around helping people and he travels with them because he is The Thing That Would Not Go Away. (XY: Bother bother bother)

Imagine Binghe going on one of his first missions away from Cang Qiong Mountain Sect (probably not the Skinner Demon one, as Shen Yuan didn’t remember that) and meeting Shen Yuan for the first time!
Ning Yingying almost gets kidnapped or injured (as per usual) when a mysterious, young ‘rogue cultivator’ shows up and smacks away the monster of the weak.
✹ It’s Shen Yuan! ✹
(He didn’t want Binghe to be punished for ‘letting’ Ning Yingying get hurt, so he interfered. The plotline probably doesn’t need a hostage. As cultivators, of course they’ll chase down the monster anyway, right? It’s fine
)
Luo Binghe is struck by the rogue cultivator’s golden brown eyes (emphasis on golden), crow black hair, and beautiful smile.
The older teen seems weirdly delighted to meet two young Qing Jing Peak disciples, and insists on spoiling them with a nice meal and cute trinkets before sending them back to their master. (He sneaks Binghe in particular a stealth qiankun pouch that appears to be full of preserved foods and quality camping gear. So weird!)
After their rogue cultivator friend drops them off where their group is staying, and whisks away
Binghe notices a stay gold tipped crow feather drifting to the ground.
It was the crow king!!!
Binghe keeps the feather and treasures it greatly, along side his mother’s jade Guanyin.
AGHGHHH THIS IS SO WHOLESOME AND BASICALLY SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!!!! Shen Yuan randomly popping up to help with missions and Luo Binghe staring at him with starry eyes, not wanting to blow his cover because obviously the corvid king isn't saying who he is for a reason, but also IT'S THE CORVID KING, Y'ALL!!!! Shen Yuan standing there like "yes...nobody shall ever know that I'm helping out my little angel, I win!" and Binghe's just standing ominously in the background like "I know what you are." but also not saying it because the man seems to be so excited and happy to be able to have a casual life -> he must be stifled in his vast territory and huge, sprawling home (the rumours like to greatly overexaggerate) that he craves to escape it sometimes, which is why he hangs out with Binghe!! I also can't help but think of Ning Yingying blabbering constantly about the "golden-daozhang" to a very curious Shen Qingqiu, and Luo Binghe is this close to grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her because DUDE, stop talking to a peak lord about this entity that doesn't want people to know about him!! You keep talking about his brown eyes with splashes of gold in them and the golden shimmer of his hair in certain lights then Shizun is DEFINITELY going to figure out who's helping us out!!! Shen Qingqiu is intrigued by this Daozhang....he simply must check in on this himself, it would do no good for a predatory man to have access to his disciples so easily.

Lan Sizhui and His Wei-qianbei
Of all the juniors, Lan Sizhui has the closest connection to Wei Wuxian that is actually kept secret until almost the end of the novel. But even when both characters are unaware of their shared history, Lan Sizhui still unconsciously gravitates towards his former A-Die/Xian-gege as a source of comfort and safety:
“Don’t be afraid,” Wei Wuxian said again. “I’m not afraid,” [Lan Sizhui] replied. “Truly?” “Truly.” Lan Sizhui even smiled. “Mo-qianbei, you and Hanguang Jun are really similar.” “Similar?” Wei Wuxian said with surprise. “How are we similar?” He and Lan Wangji were clearly as different as the heavens and the Earth. But Lan Sizhui just smiled, said nothing, and led the remaining people outside. I don’t know either, he thought silently. But you two just feel similar. It feels as though as long as one of you is present, I don’t need to be scared of anything.
—Chapt. 37: Flora V, fanyiyi
The disciples that he had let free could neither run nor stay. On the inside there were the YiLing Patriarch, the Ghost General, and the traitor of the righteous side HanGuang-Jun, while on the outside there were countless walking corpses waiting to be fed. Yet, everything was bright on Lan SiZhui’s side, “Senior Mo... Senior Wei. Are you here to save us? You were not the one who got people to take us here, were you?” Although it was a question, his face was full of complete trust and delight. Wei WuXian felt his heart warm up.
—Chapt. 68: Tenderness, exr
The sight of the two men made Lan SiZhui feel as if he could face anything, no matter how dire or impossible. He gladly responded, “HanGuang-Jun! Senior-Wei! Please hurry over!”
—Chapt. 83: Core Part 5, boat-full-of-lotus-pods
He even goes so far as to question what the juniors have been taught about Wei Wuxian even before he knows that their "Mo-qianbei" is actually the loathsome Yiling Patriarch or that he was once raised by him:
They heard Lan Jingyi interject. “Why are you so angry?” the boy blurted out. “It’s not like Sizhui said Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been killed. He only said that it’s possible not everyone who practices demonic cultivation is like Xue Yang. Is it necessary to fling things everywhere? I haven’t had a chance to taste that yet...” Jin Ling sneered. “Didn’t he also say ‘the inventor of those methods didn’t necessarily want to use them for evil?’ Who was ‘the inventor of those methods?’ Tell me, who else could it be but Wei Ying! I don’t understand. Isn’t your Gusu Lan Clan also a prominent cultivation clan? Didn’t a lot of your people die at Wei Ying’s hand too? Wasn’t it a headache killing all the walking corpses and all his other scummy followers? Why are you taking such a strange position, Lan Yuan? Based on what you said just then, aren’t you trying to let Wei Ying off the hook?!” Lan Yuan was Lan Sizhui’s birth name. “I’m not trying to let him off the hook at all,” he explained. “I only wanted to propose that, since we don’t know exactly what the circumstances were, we shouldn’t draw any definite conclusions. Before we went to Yi City, didn’t a lot of people claim that Xiao Xingchen Daozhang killed the Yueyang Chang Clan’s Chang Ping in angry vengeance? And how did it turn out in reality?”
—Chapt. 43: Beauty I, fanyiyi
No matter what separated them—be it death, amnesia, or clan disapproval—Lan Sizhui has never truly forgotten the love he feels for the A-Die/Xian-gege of his childhood.
At least, Lan SiZhui couldn’t hold it any longer. With a loud cry, he leaped up. One hand around Wei WuXian and the other around Lan WangJi, he pulled the two into a tight embrace. Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi bumped into each other from the hug. Both of them were surprised. Lan SiZhui buried his head between their shoulders, “HanGuang-Jun, Senior Wei, I... I...” Hearing his muffled voice, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi exchanged a look, only inches apart. They both saw something soft within each other’s eyes. Wei WuXian fixed his mood and put his hand on Lan SiZhui’s back, patting, “Enough, what are you crying for?” Lan SiZhui, “Not crying... Just... I suddenly feel so frustrated, but so happy as well... I do not know how to describe it...” After some silence, Lan WangJi laid his hand onto his back as well and patted. Lan WangJi, “There is no need to describe it then.” Wei WuXian, “That’s right.” Lan SiZhui didn’t say anything. He hugged them even tighter.

straight and thumping on the ground impatiently. fast rhythm beat with 0.95-second intervals.
—and with that crease between his eyebrows, pout so evident in his lips, eyes boring through the side of your head. there’s no need to turn front to see the literal dragon of mount hua is displeased at the slow pace of his order shÄ«zitĂłu. it’s not like you can afford to flat-out be rude to the half-huili jing server eagerly asking for more affirmations about their restaurant’s food. goodness, you’re not chung myung

“the sauce? is it sweet enough? or perhaps you like it sticky
” the half huili jing server’s voice lowered in a purr. “..daozhang?”
you’re about to correct the server when a sarcastic, gruff voice enters the conversation. “no, they don’t like sweets that much and they prefer thin consistency sauce to sticky.”
speaking of, your companion finally spoke up. the entire time chung myung is either grunting or clicking his tongue to respond as you put out the orders on the menu. you wanted to let out a heavy sigh but held it in. he spoke up but at what cost?
chung myung tapped his palm on the table a little bit too hard. “put the shÄ«zitĂłu down. that’s what i ordered.”
faced with the natural hierarchy’s top one, how could a huili jing fight against a dragon? even more to a half huili jing? with a graceful movement, the half huili jing set out the tray full of appetizing meals rich in different flavours and seasonings.
the silence was too loud despite the busy chatter heard outside the private room and so, once the sulky half huili jing strolled away, you picked up the chopstick, ready to eat. that’s how you and chung myung spent the rest of the evening with occasional banters, two unfilled cups holding beads of alcohol, and an abandoned bottle of peach baijiu in the side.
moves languidly
the elders and the youths alike have watched a certain senior-junior pair dance around with each other. be it when they are younger than they are now—the plum blossoms in winter’s seasonal bloom and summer’s jovial heat sighing at the young man finding himself to get the point across and you dodging every little thing almost nil. the terrified junior brothers betting on who will try to make a move first.
so far the winning score is on those who placed bets on chung myung’s side

a group of junior brothers set aside their lunch once they saw the two together with the taller one carrying a box with decorative materials for the spring festival and the other having a ladder.
you propped the ladder to the wall and started climbing on it while chung myung set the box down.
“will the elder make a move?”
“shush.”
“come on, shixiong. he is right. how about we bet if the elder makes a move on them this time?” junior brother lu nodded to the oblivious pair. he pushed his lunch forward, “i’ll bet my lunch set a, elder chung myung will make a move.”
junior brother ming, the shixiong, responded dryly. “i’ll bet mine he will not.”
“i’m with brother lu!”
“shixiong, you can’t possibly think elder will not when you also saw him–”
“watch.”
“huh?” instinctively, junior brother lu inclined his head just to see you playing with the ends of the red lantern for the spring festival, let it brush to your senior’s nose as chung myung sneezed. sending you a harmless glare as you laugh loudly. elder chung myung may be directing witty remarks to you but this little junior brother lu can see the tail of the elder languidly swishing behind him.
he sighs and thinks, elder chung myung is almost never too honest and yet his tail is saying otherwise.
wiggles in excitement
a new series of tomorrow awaits as the booming fireworks line up to the dark skies, below were the firecrackers noisy and frizzled. the sect adorned in red lanterns and spring couplets can be seen hanging on the doors. the disciples of mount hua gather all around in different places; some are in the dining hall, some are burning bamboo sticks and firecrackers, laughter fills up the festive mood, and some are watching the abundant glowing light flutters seen above to the lowered ground.
a single stick fell out from the fortune shaker.
you stare at it, losing interest in picking it up as each second passes by until the black-clad swordsman nudges you with his shoulder in a bump, snickering. “will you look at that.”
you can’t believe the gods had decided to be mean to you on the eve of the spring festival. the harmonious atmosphere feels like mocking you as the fortune stick reads ‘misfortune.’
then you shove the stick back into the cylinder, shake it violently, a stick falls out and you’re miniscule away throwing away the damn fortune shaker. tsk, should’ve known it’s a sham.
chung myung clutches his stomach from too much hysterical fits as he then grabs one of your hands that was choking the cylinder. surprised at his gentle touch, chung myung easily slides his fingers between the gaps of yours as his stare pins at you with a gaze swirling playful pink billows, night light kissed skin. suddenly, peering up into him through the shadows settled by the moon feels intimate as the two of you sit on the rooftop.
“there,” he whispered. “i’m sharing half of my great fortune with you.”
you swallowed thickly, wanting to squeeze your heart to shut up.
a comical exclaim escapes out of you, shiny eyes admiring him, “gege!”
chung myung reacts to your address with a sudden burst of triumph. his tail wags frantically, displaying his excitement. hearing you calling him 'gege' has clearly delighted him, and he seems eager to engage whatever his mind is scheming.
