sam says 4 (game master cinematic universe, part 3)
Ruby was at her mum's for a family dinner she couldn't miss on pain of death, apparently, and the Doctor was many things, but a family dinner kind of guy wasn't one of themâparticularly when Carla had already slapped him once in the short time he'd known her. He thought he'd broken his streak of bad luck with mums, but⌠well, seemingly not. So he was companionless for a few hours, and while he could wait for her to get back, maybe catch up on his readingâwhat was the point of waiting when you had a time machine?Â
He ran his hands over the TARDIS console, marvelling at her clean lines and metallic flourishes, the way that even now she felt brand new but familiar, and paused. Heâd just pop off for a quick adventure, nothing too dangerous, butâwhere to go?
He could scan for a distress call nearby, and pitch in to help. He could drop in on Donna and Shaun and Rose, beautiful Rose, and see how they were all doing. Or he could just hit the randomiser button, and jump in feet first wherever he ended up.
He remembered a conversation from a long time ago, when he wore a different face, and his gorgeous TARDIS wore a face too, for the first and only time.
âYou didn't always take me where I wanted to go.â
âNo, but I always took you where you needed to go.â
He grinned. Who could resist an offer like that? He pressed the button and whooped as the time rotor spun into action, ready to see where the universe would take him.
---
Apparently, he was needed pretty close to where he already was. Earth, 2024. Huh. Same planet, same timeâwithin a few months of where heâd left Ruby, even. The main thing that had changed was the location: he was now in the good old US of A. California, to be more specific, and Los Angeles to be more specific still. And to really narrow it down, the Doctor discovered as he poked his head out of the TARDIS doors, he was in⌠a broom closet. Not bad, as a parking spotâa bit squeezy, but out of the way. And as he poked his head out of that door, he could finally see he was in the backstage corridors of a studio of some kind. Film or TV, if he was to hazard a guess, it was a different vibe from Abbey Road.
With a shrug, he decided to go exploring.
It couldnât have been more than a minute before a young woman wearing the full-black outfit, headset, and permanently stressed expression of a production assistant came running up to him.
âAre you the fill-in Sam organised?â she asked breathlessly, and honestly, seeing the look on her face, the Doctor didnât have the heart(s) to tell her no. And really, what was the Doctor, if not a professional fill-in? This, this was why he had a randomiser button on the control panel, because whatever he was about to get himself into was going to be fun.
âSure!â
âOh, thank god,â sighed the production assistant, relief dawning across her face. âWhen Ally tested positive this morning, I thought we were sunk for the record, because we called around and we couldnât get a hold of anyone. But then Sam said he could get someone in, and, you know, here you are, and just in time, soâah, yeah, if you could follow me this way?â
Smiling all the way, the Doctor followed his guide through to hair and makeup, looking around as they went. The studio seemed to belong to a company called Dropout, according to the branding scattered around, and things seemed, at least on the surface, to be⌠well. Fine. He couldn't tell why he'd been brought here yet, which meant that when he found the reason, it was going to be particularly tangled. He couldn't wait!Â
And then he looked back at his guide, still engulfed in a miasma of anxiety, and realised he'd been too busy looking for clues to notice the person right in front of him.Â
âHey, it's cool, you've found me,â he started with a gentle smile. âYou can relax. Hi, I'm the Doctor. What's your name?â
âOh!â she said, startled. âThe Doctor, yeah, of course. Um, hi, I'm Kaylin. Look, sorry, it's just that I've been so busy this morning, I'm so distracted⌠Shit, and I would've completely forgotten to get your details too. There's paperwork to fill in, but you can do that later. Um, just for now, though, can I get your pronouns?â
The Doctor thought for a moment. âHe/him, for now.â
Kaylin nodded, making a note on her phone. âOkay, cool! And do you have any socials?â
âNot me, babes,â he replied. âI'm hardly sitting down long enough to be able to update, you know?â
âOn a day like this, I know exactly what you mean,â she said. âThat's okay, Lou didn't have socials either for the longest time. Right, so if you go through there, the team will get you sorted, and once you're done, someone will take you up to the greenroom. All good?â
âAll great,â the Doctor replied. Kaylin flashed him a quick, relieved smile, then hurried off.
Hair and makeup was a fairly quick process, the sound mixer fitted him with a microphone, and before too long, Kaylin was back to take him upstairs.Â
âThis is the greenroom,â she said, pushing the door open. âThe rest of the cast for the episode are already hereâtheyâre great guys, and theyâve both been on the show a lot, so theyâll be able to help if youâve got questions. And if you need anything else, just come find me or any of the other PAs, okay?â
The Doctor nodded, beamed at Kaylin, and walked in.
---
The greenroom was small but comfortable, and its occupants, two men around the same age as the Doctor appeared, looked up as he entered.
âOh, youâre new,â the taller of the pair said, clearly giving him the once-over.
The other sighed with a mixture of fondness and exasperation, just as clearly used to his friendâs antics.
âHey, Iâm Brennan,â he said, levering himself up to standing from his perch on a chair arm, and holding out a hand. âThatâs Grant.â
The Doctor took it warmly. âThe Doctor. Just passing through, and happy to help.â
Grantâs eyebrows quirked. âDoctor⌠something?â he prompted.
âOr is it just âthe Doctorâ?â Brennan asked.
âJust âthe Doctorâ,â the Time Lord confirmed cheerfully. âYouâll get used to it, everyone does.â
Grant didnât look convinced, butâ
âCopy that,â Brennan shrugged, and settled back on the arm of the chair, returning his gaze to the door.
Grant, in turn, looked at the Doctor and rolled his eyes in a clear expression of âno, I donât know why heâs like this, eitherâ.
âOkay,â the Doctor said after a moment of watching the watching. âI wasnât going to ask, but now I think I have to. Whatâs up with the door?â
Brennan huffed a laugh. âWell, the last time there was one of those upââ he pointed to the Out of Order sign stuck to the bathroom door, ââwe got locked in here for the game.â
âHeâs paranoid,â Grant interjected.
âWell, yeah, maybe,â Brennan retorted. âOr just cautious. Because Samâs been acting weird lately, and weâre coming up to the last few records of the season, so heâs probably planning something way out of the box for the finale. And the original cast was you, me and Beardsley, soâŚâ
He shrugged one shoulder meaningfully, and Grant nodded, conceding both the point and the potential for chaos.
âSo if Sam comes in to give us the briefing, rather than waiting til weâre on set,â Brennan continued, âor thereâs anything else weird going on, Iâm gonna know about it right from the beginning.â
He turned to the Doctor. âThe only reason I'm not quizzing you is because I know for a fact Beardsley was genuinely scheduled for this, so you can't be a plant by the production team. No offence.â
âNone taken,â the Doctor smiled. âThat sort of thing happen often, does it?â
Grant and Brennan exchanged a look.Â
âMore than you'd think,â Grant answered with a grimace.Â
âAlright,â the Doctor said slowly, then brightened. âSo what is it we're actually doing?â
Grant gave him a disbelieving glance. âYou don't knowâ?â
âVery last minute fill-in,â the Doctor said breezily. âBut don't worry, I'm a quick study.â
âWell, you're not that much worse off than the rest of us,â Brennan said encouragingly. âYou know about Game Changer, obviously, if you know Sam, and we only find out the rules of the game once we get on set. Hopefully,â he added, with a dark look back at the Out of Order sign.Â
The Doctor nodded. No, he didn't know Sam, and he didn't know Game Changer, but he could work out the situation from context clues. This was a game show. And with the Toymaker banished, and Satellite Five not coming into existence for another 198000 years, give or take, he found himself smiling. Maybe third time would be the charm.Â
âMmm, hopefully they aren't going to throw you in the deep end,â Grant said. âBecause Brennan might seem lovely now, but as soon as we get out there, he's a whore for points. He'll stab you in the back and won't even blink.â
Brennan barked with laughter. âYeah, and you wouldn't?â
âExcuse you, I'm always a goddamn delight,â Grant replied, the very picture of injured dignity.Â
âOh, absolutely!â agreed a new voice. The Doctor turned to the now-open door to see a bearded man in a pinstriped suit smiling broadly. âThat's why we keep inviting you back!â
Grant bowed sarcastically. âWhy, thank you, Sam. Good to know I'm appreciated by someone here.â
âAlways,â Sam replied, gently but firmly ending that particular path of the conversation. He scanned the room, and his eyes lit up when they landed on the Doctor.Â
âAh, you must be the Doctor!â he said with obvious delight, walking over with his hand outstretched. âI'm Samâthanks for filling in for us, you've made sure we're going to have a good show. Seriously, it's a pleasure to have you here.â
âAw, cheers!â the Doctor smiled, shaking the offered hand. âGlad I could help out, I'm really looking forward to this!â
âWell, great!â Sam exclaimed, then took a step back, regarding all three players in turn. âNow, folks, I'm just letting you know that we're just about ready to start the record, so if you can start heading down, that'd be great.â
Grant and Brennan noddedâBrennan, the Doctor noticed, with relief.Â
âSee you down there,â Sam said, smiling. âHave a great show, andââ
His eyes caught on the Doctor's for a second, twinkling.Â
âGood luck.â
---
Backstage, the Doctor, Brennan and Grant were marshalled into podium order and given a final briefing from the crew. And then, with a thumbs-up from Kaylin, that was it.
Showtime.
âGet ready for a Game Changer!â came Sam's voice from onstage. âTonightâs guests: he can shoot off a monologue with laser accuracy; itâs Brennan Lee Mulligan!â
Brennan, his back to the camera as the curtains opened, spun on his heel and, with a stone-cold expression, pointed finger guns straight down the barrel, before letting the facade crack open. âHi!â he exclaimed, and walked over to the leftmost podium.
âItâs his first appearance, but heâs already on fire; itâs the Doctor!â
The Doctor leant against the archway to the stage and flashed a broad smile towards the camera, then in a few skipping steps, had bounded over to the next free podium. What the hell, why not make an entrance?
âAnd even in the toughest of mazes, youâll always be able to find him; itâs Grant OâBrien!â
Grant dipped his lanky frame into an approximation of a curtsey, spreading his arms wide, then sauntered over to the closest podium with a grin.
âAnd your host, me!â Sam announced, a ring of manic white showing around his irises as he beamed down the barrel of the camera. âIâve been here the whole time!â
âThis,â he continued, pushing his microphone shut and stowing it in his jacket pocket, âis Game Changer, the only game show where the game changes every show. I am your host, Sam Reich!âÂ
As he said his name, he looked at his hands, front and back, as if he was pleasantly surprised to be himself, then gestured towards the three podiums.
âI am joined today by these three lovely contestants! Now, you understand how the game works.â
âOf course not,â Grant started. âYou know we don't.â
âWe can't, Sam, that's the whole point of the theatre you've set up here,â Brennan said over him.Â
âNot yet,â was all the Doctor said, anticipation starting to drum a tattoo of excitement against the inside of his ribcage.Â
âThatâs right!â Sam said brightly, shooting finger guns at the camera. âOur players have no idea what game it is theyâre about to play. The only way to learn is by playing. The only way to win is by learning, and the only way to begin is by beginning! So without further ado, letâs begin by giving each of our players fifty points.â
The Doctor, biding his time, watched the reactions of his fellow contestants. Grant looked at the front of his podium, checking the point total, and nodding approvingly when he saw that yes, it was sitting at a round fifty. Brennan, on the other hand, was starting to frown.
âPlayers, Sam says: touch your nose,â Sam began, and Brennan sighed the sigh of someone who wasnât happy to be proved right.
âOh, no,â he groaned. âOh, you son of a bitch. Wasnât one this season enough?â
He touched his nose anyway, as did the others, and Sam smiled encouragingly. âSam says: touch your ear.â
When they all did, Sam nodded. âTouch your other ear.â
Everybody held still, fingers on the ears they had originally touched.
Sam beamed. âEasy, players, right?â
âYou say that now,â Brennan said darkly. âWhich makes it worse, because all you're doing is setting us up for failure.â
Sam gasped, pretending offence. âWould I do that?â
âYes,â Brennan and Grant replied in unison, which drew a grin from the Doctor and set Sam off chuckling.
âAnd I'm not having it,â Brennan continued, leaning his elbows against his podium and pointing at Sam with the hand not touching his ear. âYou better watch yourself, because I know how this game works, and you're not going to get one over on me.â
âStrong words, Brennan!â Sam said, clearly delighted by this response. âOkay, then, let's start making things a bit more interesting!â
The game continued as per Sam Says usual, some rounds done as a group and some individual. Points were won, sure, but lost slightly more frequently, and even the Doctor found he was having to concentrate to avoid getting caught in the host's traps.Â
It was fun. Genuinely, it was like playing a game with friends, and the Doctor felt himself leaning into it. There wasn't any sign of dangerâmaybe there wasn't a mystery to solve at all, and the TARDIS just decided he needed a total break.Â
Well, probably not. But the way things were going, he was able to let himself hope.Â
âAlright, players,â Sam said a good few rounds in, just as pleasantly as he would start any other question, and the screen behind him dinged as a new prompt popped up. âSurvive the death beam.â
For a second, everything was frozen perfectly still.Â
And then came the crash, the explosive noise of heavy machinery moving relentlessly through a drywall set.
The Doctor was already moving. âEveryone down!â
âDuck!â Brennan yelled at the same time.
The two of them hit the ground within milliseconds of each other, but Grant was still paralysed in the face of the giant, science-fiction type laser cannon that had just ploughed through the wall.Â
It whined ominously, screaming its way to fever pitch. And then a sharp pain in Grantâs ankle made him stagger, pitching forwards onto the carpet behind the podiums as the Doctor rolled away to avoid getting pinned.
âSorry, babes,â the Doctor whispered. âBut it was either kick you to get you down, orââ
A hideous metallic screech ripped through the air, and all three of them could feel the crackle of ozone as a beam of energy swept across what had, moments ago, been neck height.
ââŚOr that,â the Doctor finished with a grimace.
âJesus fucking Christ,â Grant breathed, suddenly very conscious of every inch of his 6â9 frame. âThanks.â
âWell done, players!â Sam exclaimed delightedly from above them. âBut⌠sorry, I didnât say âSam saysâ, so thatâs a point off for everyone.â
âWhat the fuck!â Brennan snapped.
âAre you actually insane?â Grant demanded at the same time, his voice overlapping with Brennanâs.
In response, Sam just wheezed with laughter. âYou can come back to your podiums,â he said, cheerfully ignoring them.
Nobody moved.
âVery good!â he acknowledged, and even without seeing his face, the grin was obvious in his voice. âOkay, Sam says: come back to your podiums.â
Although the words were innocuous, and his tone was just as light and breezy as usual, there was nevertheless an edge hiding just underneath the surface. And while the death beam loomed large in the minds of all three players, it was impossible to consider disobedience as an option.
Slowly, they stood, returning to their places. Now they had the time to look at it properly, the death beam was even more sinister, and Brennan and Grant both kept flicking nervous glances its way, ready to move if it looked like it was charging up again.
The Doctor, however, was focused purely on the man standing in front of them. Unbothered, Sam met his gaze like a challenge, a mischievous smile playing about his lips.
âOh, youâll love this one,â he said, and the screen changed. âSam says, starting with Grant: say my name.â
Grant frowned in confusion, but answered quickly nonetheless. âSam Reich?â
The man himself shrugged tolerantly, moving on. âBrennan?â
Brennan just stared at him coolly. âDo you take me for a fool?â
âWell caught, Brennan!â Sam said happily. âSam says: say my name.â
âSam,â Brennan replied, suspicion clear in his voice. âSamuel Dalton Reich.â
He nodded, still with a hint of indifference. âAnd lastly, Doctor.â His smile broadened. âSam says: say my name.â
It was easy. Too easy. And as the Doctor looked into the eyes of the man calling himself Sam Reich, he felt his hearts stutter in recognition, because something had changed. He wasnât hiding himself anymore, and while the face was different yet again, the Doctor would know the shape of that soul anywhere. It was impossible. It was inevitable.
âYou canât be,â he breathed.Â
Sam smirked, leaning in across his podium. âOh, but Doctor⌠Iâve been here the whole time,â he stage-whispered with a wink.
âHe said you lost,â the Doctor said, shaking his head, looking wrong-footed for the first time that Brennan and Grant could recall. âYou lost, and he trapped you.â
The other two watched, uncomprehending, but Sam just smiled, drumming his fingers against the podium with an audible beat, fast but distinct. Four taps, four taps, four taps. âIâm waiting.â
The Doctor took a slow, deep breath. Set his jaw.Â
âMaster.â

Hey everyone, do you like wcrp? do you like cowboys and wild west aesthetics? would you like both of them in one? then i have good news for you!! Scorched Earth WCRP is now open!! the plot has not begun as of now so thereâs plenty of time to join!!
âSCORCHED EARTH takes place in the desert. The location is heavily based on Los Alamos, with some creative liberties taken. The different colonies surround a crater in the ground, an obelisk at the bottom - the original testing site for the atomic bomb. Overtime, the radiation has mostly cleared, and the strange green trinitite glass that covered the ground is mostly buried under the sand - except for deep within the crater.
The cats here are heavily religious, worshipping the Sun, and scorning anything else. Rules are strict and traditions are to be upheld always. There are of course differences between the coloniesâ way of worship, but each dedicates themselves to Her nonetheless.
Within Mesa Clutter, Canyon Clutter, and Basin Colony, there are unique roles and cultures among the different groups. Each has their Clerics and Medics, but they also have colony-specific roles, such as Martyrs and Hunters. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses; Mesa is known for their rigid structure and their brutal force of power, Canyon is known for their close-knit family bonds developed deep inside their caves, and Basin is known for their joyful cooking and gratitude, always willing to share with others.
Outside of the colonies, deep in the Badlands, lives The Ramhorns. These Outlaws have formed a dangerous bond within the harsh and deadly terrain they must survive in. Lead by a giant shadow of teeth and claws, they gather the bones of those theyâve slain, using them in rituals and as a warning to anyone who dares venture into the Badlands, where, if the Outlaws donât get you, the horrible conditions certainly will.
There are lone Outlaws as well, but anyone alone in the Badlands wonât usually last long
But there are exceptions.
Her light may protect them during the day, but when She is dragged underneath, predators and venomous animals prowl the night.
And in the shadows lurks monsters, made living by Eldersâ tales of darkness incarnate, monsters opposite of their warm God.
Unnatural amalgamationsâŚ
The purest form of Evil.â

Ambush at the Bridge: Chapter Five
And finally, the conclusion. Man, this is long.
AO3
First part | <- Previous part
-------------------------------
âThis really isnât necessary, Rancher.â
âYou can say that as many times as you want, Iâm still not going to let you walk on your own.â
Hyrule heaved a sigh from beside Twilight as they walked but made no further attempt to push away from the rancher. One of his arms wrapped around Twilightâs shoulder while Twilight supported him with an arm around Hyruleâs back. In spite of his insistence that he was fine, Hyrule had stumbled one too many times. Twilight decided to support him the rest of the way despite the travelerâs protests. Hyruleâs hair brushed Twilightâs jaw and he couldnât help but glance at Hyruleâs head again to make sure the wound wasnât bleeding. Dried blood matted strands of Hyruleâs brown hair together, darkening the color even further. Hyrule seemed stable, at least. Heâd still break into a coughing fit every once in a while and the head wound threw off his sense of balance, but he was coherent and responsive. Twilight glanced away from Hyrule to Wind who walked a few paces ahead of them, constantly throwing concerned glances back at Hyrule.
âHow much further, Sailor?â Twilight asked.
âWeâre close,â Wind replied. âI recognize this area. Thereâs another bend or two then we should be there.â
Twilight nodded, readjusting his grip on Hyrule. The three heroes continued making their way upriver, the dull roar of the water accompanying their footsteps. Hyrule started coughing again and Twilight slowed, but the traveler just waved a hand, smiling at him between hacks.
âItâs⌠itâs just a tickle-â A cough interrupted him, â-in my throat. Iâm fine.â
A frown tugged at Twilightâs lips but Hyrule pulled him forward, continuing to walk. They moved on in quiet, Twilight watching Hyrule carefully for any sign of struggling. Twilightâs ears twitched, picking up a faint noise in the distance. He focused past the sound of the river, honing in on the interruptions in its repetition. He recognized the punctuated vibrations and syllables of voices after a moment.
âI hear the others,â he said. Wind looked back at him, eyebrows raised.
âYou do?â he asked, tilting his head to the side and listening. âI donât hear anything.â
Twilight continued focusing on the sound, inner ears prickling. A low, rumbling pitch, answered by a thinner one. He couldnât pick up any words but he could hear the sharp sâs and tâs that carried across the air. âItâs definitely them. Weâre nearly there.â
Wind turned away, grumbling quietly. âNo fair you get super hearing.â
Twilight and Hyrule both chuckled at that, the traveler breaking into a few short coughs. It didnât take long before Wind heard the others as well. His face split into a grin and he bounced with each step. He sped up, remembered Twilight and Hyrule couldnât speed up with him, slowed down, and sped up again on a loop. They followed a bend in the river and the trees gave way to the old bridge. Wind laughed, running ahead and waving his arms.
âGuys!â he called to the three blond heads visible across the river. They all lifted at his voice, revealed to be Time, Warriors, and Four. The latter two knelt by the river, water dripping from Fourâs face while the captain paused in scrubbing his hands as they looked up. Time sat nearby facing away from them, head turned to look at Twilight and the others.
âSailor!â Warriors stood along with Four, shaking water from his hands. A blood-speckled bandage wrapped around his head while Fourâs nose appeared a few shades too purple. âIs TravelerâŚ?â
âHeâs right here,â Twilight called as he and Hyrule came to stand by Wind at the bridge.
Warriors stiffened. Even from across the river, Twilight could see how his shoulders raised, hand darting to the sword on his back. Twilight whipped his head around, expecting to see a monster of some kind sneaking up behind him and Hyrule. Nothing was there. He blinked, turning back to call out and ask what was wrong. He froze. Warriors, Four, and Time all stared directly at him, watching him with looks heâd seen them direct at monsters. The hair on the back of Twilightâs neck rose as he looked between the three heroes.
âWhat⌠whatâs wrong?â he asked.
A long moment passed before Warriors spoke, eyes darting between Twilight and Hyrule. âRancher?â he called carefully.
âYeah?â Twilight responded, uncertain.
Warriors hand closed around the hilt of his sword and Twilight tensed, eyes wide. He felt Hyrule stiffen beside him, the traveler reaching for his own weapon only to remember it wasnât there. Windâs head whipped back and forth as he looked between the two groups, face scrunched in confusion.
Four stepped past Warriors, hand hovering near his sword. âLast week,â he began, and Twilightâs trepidation turned to confusion, âthe cook made a dessert with apples but you didnât get to eat yours. Why?â
Twilightâs mouth opened and closed a few times as he processed that. Four wore one of the most serious expressions Twilight had ever seen on the smith. He almost laughed at the absurdity of that combined with his question and how Warriors stood ready to draw his weapon at a momentâs notice.
âS-smith, what-â
âAnswer the question, Rancher,â Warriors cut him off, voice tight.
Twilightâs mouth snapped shut, staring dumbfounded at the three. The longer he took to answer, the tenser they became. âEpona loves apples,â he began slowly. âI looked away for one second and she ate it right off of my plate.â
A second ticked by, then another. The sound of the river hammered Twilightâs ears, punctuated by his heartbeat. Then Warriors sighed, hand dropping from his sword. Time seemed to relax as well but Four remained stiff a moment longer, gaze boring into Twilight. After another beat, Warriors placed a hand on Fourâs shoulder.
âSmith,â he began in a low voice, probably not intended for those across the river to hear. âI think itâs okay.â
Four stared for a moment longer before he relented, nodding slowly and relaxing his posture.
âTraveler, are you alright?â Warriors called.
Twilight blinked at the abrupt topic change while Hyrule huffed a laugh. âYou⌠you canât just-â
âWhat was that about?â Wind cried before Hyrule could complete his thought.
âItâŚâ Warriors glanced at Four. âItâs a lot to explain. Sorry for the suspicion, Rancher. We can talk once you guys get over here.â
âTraveler, are you okay to cross?â Four asked. âWeâd come to you, butâŚâ He cast a glance at Time and Twilight frowned. Was the old man wounded? Was that why he hadnât moved at all other than looking over his shoulder?
âIâm fine,â Hyrule responded.
âGreat!â Wind all but jumped onto the bridge, the old wood groaning in protest. âBecause I want an explanation for what just happened!â
Twilight nodded in agreement, fighting back a wince as Wind ran across the bridge, loud creaks accompanying each step. Twilight and Hyrule followed after him, reaching it just as Wind crossed to the other side, immediately rushing toward Four and peppering him with questions. Just before stepping onto the bridge, Hyrule stopped, pulling Twilight to a halt as well.
âTraveler?â Twilight asked softly, eyeing how Hyrule stared at the bridge. âYou okay?â
Hyrule took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh that sounded almost exasperated. âI hate bridges.â
Twilight snorted. âTell me about it.â
âDid you fall off a bridge and nearly drown, too?â
Twilight took a step onto the bridge. âNo, but Iâve had several break on me,â he began as he took another step, Hyrule beside him. âHad two separate jousting battles on bridges.â Another step. âOne got set on fire while I was on it. Had to jump off into the lake below.â
âYikes.â Hyrule winced in sympathy as they walked.
Twilight hummed in agreement, nodding. âTwo got taken apart by beasts and the pieces were thrown to the other side of Hyrule.â
Hyrule laughed. âWhat is with your journey and bridges?â
âIâve asked myself the same thing,â Twilight chuckled. Before he knew it, they crossed the bridge, stepping onto solid ground on the other side. He grinned, looking over at Hyrule. âHey, we made it!â
Hyrule snorted. âYou had doubt?â
âYouâre really asking that after everything I just told you?â
âFair enough.â
âTraveler!â Warriors swiftly stepped in front of Hyrule, examining his head wound. He stood back after a moment with a sigh, gesturing to the ground beside Time. âSit down, let me take a look.â
âItâs fine, I already healed it,â Hyrule protested, pulling against Twilight as the rancher tried to lead him to sit. âBesides, youâre hurt too.â
Twilight eyed the numerous bandages Warriors sported as the captain moved to Hyruleâs other side and grabbed his arm, firmly guiding him next to Time. âJust a few cuts that the old man already took care of. Sit down and let me take a look at your head.â
Hyrule heaved a sigh but didnât fight any further, letting the two guide him. Once he was seated, Warriors glanced at Twilight.
âAre you hurt, Rancher?â he asked, eyes darting over Twilight.
âNo,â Twilight replied, then gave a crooked grin. âJust muddy.â
Warriors nodded with a half-smirk and Twilight stood back up. He glanced between Time and where Four and Wind stood, the sailor continuing to pelt Four with questions faster than the smith could answer. He wanted to ask about their suspicion of him as well, but firstâŚ
âOld man,â he said, moving around Hyrule and Warriors and heading toward Time. âAre you-?â
His words died in his throat. Lying unmoving with his head propped up in Timeâs lap, tunic absolutely drenched with blood, was Wild. Twilight gasped sharply, dropping to his knees before Wildâs form, one hand darting to the championâs head, the other to the tear in his tunic over his chest.
âChampion!â Twilight pressed his hand against Wildâs much too pale forehead, the skin cool beneath his palm. Wild stirred at the touch but didnât open his eyes, lips parted as he took shallow breaths through his mouth. Brownish tracks of dried blood ran along his collar and the sides of his neck, leading toward bloody mats in his hair.
âHeâs alright.â
Twilightâs gaze snapped up to Time as the old man placed a warm hand on his shoulder.
âWe used a fairy and she took care of his wounds,â Time explained. âBut he lost a lot of blood.â
Twilightâs head spun as he looked back down at Wild. Timeâs reassurances battled in his mind with the sight of pale, unconscious Wild whose tunic looked closer to a dark purple than blue with how much blood was soaked into it. Wild shivered every so often, brow pinching.
âWhatâŚâ Twilight swallowed hard against the lump that formed in his throat. âWhat happened?â
âWe were attacked,â Four said, suddenly beside Twilight. Twilight glanced over to see Warriors, Hyrule, and Wind close by as well, listening to Four. âBy a⌠shadow.â
Twilightâs eyes widened. âShadow?â
âNot the Shadow, butâŚâ Four lowered himself to the ground, sitting cross-legged between Twilight and the others. He sighed. âI donât know. I was able to fight him off, but not before heâŚâ His eyes flicked to Wild for a moment.
Not before he almost killed Champion. Twilight finished in his head, wincing at the involuntary thought.
âDid he do that to your face, too?â Wind asked, delicate as always.
To Twilightâs surprise, Four laughed. âNo, that was a moblin, actually. It broke my nose but the captain straightened it.â His smile faded as his eyes drifted back to Wild. Twilight found his gaze traveling to the champion as well, fingers absently running through the tangled blond locks. Wildâs breaths came shallow but steady, face still an unhealthy pallor.
âDoes what happened with Champion have to do with your suspicion of me?â Twilight asked, not taking his eyes off Wild.
Four shifted as all eyes turned to him. Twilight looked up to see Fourâs gaze locked on Wild, lips knotted.
âYes,â Four said. He chewed on his lip, took a breath. âThe shadow, heâŚâ He trailed off and sighed. Then he forced himself to meet Twilightâs gaze. âHe disguised as you.â
Twilightâs hand froze in Wildâs hair. The others might have reacted but he didnât notice, focus tunneling. His eyes widened, heart thudding in his chest. âItâŚâ He couldnât form one thought, gaze dropping to Wildâs sleeping face. âDid⌠did you guys know, o-orâŚâ
âWe figured it out,â Four quickly said, seeming to understand Twilightâs thought process. âBut not right away. We- he knew it wasnât you by the time the shadow⌠hurt him.â
Twilight could hardly feel any relief at that. He couldnât imagine what Wild mustâve felt. What Twilight would feel if he got attacked by something disguising as Time.
âIâm sorry for suspecting you,â Four said, distracting him from his thoughts.
Twilight shook his head. âNo, I understand. Iâd have done the same if-â
Stirring beneath his hand brought his words to an abrupt halt. Everyoneâs heads snapped downward as Wild groaned, slowly bringing a hand to his head. His eyes fluttered and blinked open, squinted as he looked around. His blue eyes landed on Twilight, a haze dimming their brightness. His movements slowed. Then his eyes shot wide open. He gasped, hurling himself to the side and away from Twilight, slamming against Time. Time tried calming the cook, gently grasping his shoulders but Wild wrestled out of his grip. Twilightâs fingers snagged on a knot in Wildâs hair and the champion panicked, thrashing in an attempt to get away. Before Twilight could free his hand, Wildâs flailing connected with his jaw. The force of the blow snapped his head back and he yelped as Wild tore his hair free, lunging away from him and Time.
âCook! Cook, calm down!â Four yelled, struggling to get Wildâs attention. Wild didnât seem to hear him, attempting to spring to his feet. His legs failed to support him and he stumbled to one side before collapsing to his hands and knees with a groan. Warriors, Hyrule, and Wind all darted forward at once, eager to help, but Wild only stiffened at their approach, trying and failing to get up and run again.
âGive him space!â Time called, jumping up and grabbing Warriorsâ arm, pulling him back. Warriors glanced at him before tugging on Hyrule and Wind, the three of them backing away. Wild continued to gasp, eyes wide and limbs shaking as he struggled to hold himself up and move. Four dropped to a kneel in front of Wild before Time could stop him, trying to get the cookâs attention.
âCook! Link!â
The use of his real name seemed to finally get through to Wild. He looked up, breathing hard, muscles tensed as much as they could be in his weakened state.
âItâs fine, youâre safe,â Four said in less of a shout than before.
âBut-â Wild began, voice rough, â-th- the shadow-â
âItâs him, Cook, heâs the real rancher. The shadowâs gone.â
Wild stared at Four for a long moment, the smith giving him a reassuring smile as Wild heaved for breath. Wild turned his head, eyeing Twilight warily. âRancher?â
Twilight did his best to smile. âHey, cub.â
Wild visibly relaxed as the nickname, head dropping and elbows wobbling. He groaned and crumpled fully to the ground. Twilight and Four both exclaimed in alarm, darting towards Wild.
ââm okay,â Wild mumbled as Twilight carefully turned him onto his back. âJust lightheaded.â
âAny pain?â Twilight asked, gently checking him over for any fresh blood. âYour chest?â
âIâm fine,â Wild responded, weakly batting Twilightâs hands away. âReally. Just dizzy and thirsty.â
âHere.â Twilight glanced around for Wildâs bag and, when he didnât immediately see it, unhooked his own water skin from his belt and held it out toward Wild. He and Four helped Wild sit up and Twilight held the water skin to Wildâs lips. Wild wrapped a hand around it and tilted it back. He drank slowly at first but was soon gulping it down, drops escaping through the corners of his mouth and trickling along his jaw.
Warriors knelt down before Wild as the champion drained the last of the water skin, lowering it with a gasp. âHowâre you doing, Champion?â
âCaptain,â Wild said, ignoring Warriorsâ question and reaching toward him with his free hand. Warriors took the hand albeit with a bit of confusion. âThank you.â
Warriorsâ face fell into relief and a soft grin. âDonât thank me. Thank the old man. If he hadnât found that fairyâŚâ
âAnd if you two hadnât kept him alive until I got back,â Time immediately countered, nodding toward Warriors and Four.
Wild laughed lightly, pulling his hand back. âIn any case. Thank you.â
Warriors smiled. âOf course.â Four and Time gave murmurs of assent.
âGlad youâre alright, cub,â Twilight said, giving Wildâs shoulder a squeeze.
Wild turned to look at him and his eyes widened. Twilight slowly took his hand away, worried Wild might still be somewhat afraid of him, but then he realized Wildâs gaze was fixed on his jaw. It throbbed slightly where Wild hit it and, judging by the cookâs expression, a bruise was already forming.
âDidâŚâ Wild paused, swallowing thickly. âDid I do that?â
Twilight smiled, trying to appear reassuring. âItâs okay. You were panicking, I donât blame you given the circumstances.â
âBut still, IâŚâ Wild groaned, folding his arms across his knees and lowering his head onto them. âIâm sorry.â
âDonât be.â Twilight rested a hand on Wildâs shoulder. âItâs alright, really.â
Wild turned his head, peeking an eye out from under his bangs. He stared at Twilight for a moment, eye roving over his face. He must have found whatever he was searching for because he sighed and lifted his head again, propping his chin on his arms. Four held his water flask out toward Wild. When the cook didnât immediately take it, Four shoved it in his face pointedly.
âDrink,â Four said, continuing to hold out the flask. âYou lost a lot of blood, you need to stay hydrated.â
Wild leaned away from the flask. âIâm not taking any more of your guysâ wate-â
His words were cut short as Four shoved the mouth of the flask to Wildâs lips. Wild made a muffled noise of protest and Twilight couldnât help but laugh as Four forcibly tilted the flask. A gargling sound left Wildâs throat before he snatched the flask and pulled it out of Fourâs hand and away from his mouth.
âOkay, okay, you donât have to drown me!â he exclaimed. He took a drink from the flask, rolling his eyes at Fourâs smug expression. He glanced around at the others as he drank. Then he glanced around a second time and pulled the flask away from his mouth with a frown. âWhere are Sky and the vet?â
âTheyâre still not back?â Wind asked as he looked around. The others glanced around as well, Twilightâs frown growing the longer the silence stretched.
âWho saw them last?â Time eventually asked as it quickly became apparent that no one knew where the two heroes were.
âI was by Vet at the start of the battle,â Wind spoke up. âBut there were a bunch of those really fast lizards and we got split up.â
âI saw those,â Twilight realized. âSome went after Sky, I think. But that was right around when Traveler fell in the river so I didnât see what happened after that.â
âWere there four?â Wild directed the question at Wind. The sailor nodded. âI saw those lizalfos in the woods. Took âem out. Didnât see Sky or the vet, though. And I didnât notice any⌠any blood.â
âMaybe they got chased off?â Warriors suggested. âThey couldâve gone far to shake off the lizalfos. That would explain why they havenât made their way back yet.â
âEven so, we should search for them,â said Time, turning toward the tree line. âThey could be in trouble.â
âIâll go,â Warriors said immediately, standing up and pointedly ignoring how his injured leg shook.
âNo, youâre still hurt.â
âNearly all of us are hurt. I can still fight.â
Time and Warriors shot back and forth several more times before Hyrule stood with a sigh. âIâm gonna go find my sword and shield,â he announced before setting off toward the river.
âIâll come with you!â Wind immediately jumped up, jogging after the traveler.
Twilight watched them go before turning toward Warriors and Time, trying to think of a way to settle their argument. He stopped halfway when a distant sound pricked at his ears. He quickly turned back, peering downriver as his ears twitched. Sharp sâs and tâs. A low creaking noise that could have been a groan. He stood up, narrowing his eyes.
âRancher?â he heard Wild ask but he ignored the champion in favor of listening to the voices.
âTheyâre back,â he realized. No sooner had the words left his mouth then two figures appeared around the bend in the river, moving toward the bridge slowly. Too slowly. Twilight took off toward the figures at a jog. âTheyâre back!â
He heard shuffling from behind him followed by a grunt that sounded like Warriors. Time ordered the captain to sit down before hurrying to catch up to Twilight, the two running to meet Sky and Legend.
Sky raised a hand and waved a bit weakly. Then he stumbled slightly, hand darting down to gingerly press against his side. Twilightâs heart jumped into his throat and he put more speed into his steps. As he drew closer, he saw blood speckling the left side of Skyâs tunic, steps hitching as he walked. Mud absolutely coated Legend, only one arm and the left side of his face clear through the muck. Legend looked up blearily, eyes taking a moment too long to focus on Time and Twilight. Then his gaze slid beyond them and his eyes shot wide open.
âCook!â he shouted, breaking into an unsteady run. Sky did as well, but he stumbled and nearly toppled over, wrapping an arm around his ribs and hissing.
âIâm good,â Wild called, but that didnât stop Sky and Legend from hurrying over to him. Twilight reached out to support Legend as he brushed past, but the veteran flapped a hand, staggering to a kneel before Wild.
âGoddesses, Cook,â he said breathlessly. âDid you decide to take a bath in blood?â
âIt wasnât on purpose,â Wild replied as Legend checked him over with slightly trembling hands. âDid you decide to take a bath in mud?â
âIt wasnât on purpose,â Legend snapped, pulling back after determining Wild was uninjured.
âWhat ha⌠wh⌠what h-â Sky broke off into a cough, â-happened?â
âGot stabbed but then I got healed,â Wild said quickly. âIâm fine now. Are you guys okay?â
âStabbed?â Sky wheezed before coughing again.
âYeah, but Iâm fine. All good. What happened to you?â
âI-â Sky stumbled and tipped over backwards. Twilight yelped and darted forward but Time was already there, catching Sky and gently lowering him to the ground. Sky gasped in a breath before it abruptly cut off with pain, face twisting and arms wrapping around his middle. A shout of worry alerted Twilight to Hyrule and Windâs return, silver sword hilt gleaming over Hyruleâs shoulder.
âLet me see,â Warriors said. Sky slowly pulled his arms away and Warriors gingerly prodded around Skyâs ribs. Sky winced, biting his lip to stifle a whine. âI think your ribs are fractured. Does anyone have a potion?â
Twilight pulled out his potion but Sky shook his head, carefully withdrawing a half-empty red potion from his own pouch. Warriors investigated Skyâs lightly bleeding side as the Skyloftian struggled to uncork the bottle.
âWhat happened?â Warriors asked as he gently rolled up Skyâs tunic to reveal the wound. Angry red patches stretched across his skin, blood seeping sluggishly from deeper portions where the skin had stripped away. A deep frown pulled at Warriorsâ mouth, eyes darkening in a way that made Twilight think he must have recognized that kind of wound. The captain said nothing, reaching into his pouch to fish out bandages.
âHinox from my era,â Legend said. Twilight glanced over to see Legend had laid spread eagle out on the ground, Hyrule kneeling down to check him over. Legend swatted the traveler away. âThey like throwing people. And bombs.â
âDid you get thrown, too?â Four asked as he hurried over to Sky to help him uncork the potion.
Legend rocked his head from side to side. âNo. Was stuck in a mud pit the whole time. Iâm not hurt, just overextended my magic. Stamina potion wore off.â
Twilight perked up at that. âMud pit?â
âYeah.â Legend rolled onto his side, peering up at Twilight. His eyes widened as he took in Twilightâs mud-splattered state. âWait, you too?â
Twilight nodded. âI was trying to follow the sailor but we got separated then I heard-â
âLaughing,â Legend finished.
âI didnât⌠didn⌠hear anything,â Sky remarked breathlessly, sipping at the potion as Warriors bandaged his side. âBut you⌠you did, Rancher?â
âYeah. I tried to find out where it was coming from but I stepped into the sinkhole and it stopped.â
Legendâs eyes widened even further. âSame here.â
âNobody else heard it?â Twilight asked, glancing around. The others all shook their heads. Legend and Twilight stared at each other for a moment. Twilight found his gaze drifting to the fading pink in Legendâs hair while Legendâs eyes landed on Twilightâs wolf pelt. They were silent for a moment.
âWeird!â Legend exclaimed.
âYeah, so strange!â Twilight responded.
âGuess weâll never know why weâre the only two who could hear it!â
âWhat a mystery!â
The others all eyed the two of them suspiciously, apparently not convinced by their subtlety. Twilight coughed, turning to Sky.
âAnyway, Sky, are you feeling alright? I have a full potion if you need it.â
âNo, I think⌠I think Iâm okay now,â Sky said, carefully twisting his torso from side to side and taking a few deep breaths. His chest didnât hitch anymore and Warriors had rolled his tunic back down, covering the bandages.
âOkay, just keep an eye on it,â Warriors said. âLet us know if that changes.â
Sky nodded and Legend groaned, flopping onto his back once more. âIâm more than ready to clean up and call it a day.â
âI wish we were in the rancherâs Hyrule,â Hyrule sighed. âI could use a soak in one of those Goron hot springs.â
âMy era has hot springs, too,â Wild said.
âYeah, but your hot springs are way up in the mountains and no sane person would travel through all the snow just for that,â Legend replied.
Wild looked mildly offended. âI go up there for them.â
Legend shot him a look. âLike I said.â
Wild scoffed and rolled his eyes while the others laughed.
âAnd you definitely could use a bath,â Warriors snickered, moving from Sky to Legend to ruffle the veteranâs hair. âThis mud color doesnât really compliment your flowery hair.â
Legend swatted the captainâs hand away with a scowl. He opened his mouth to respond but stopped short, a glint entering his eye and smirk tugging at his lips. âMaybe not, but you know what I think it would go great with?â
Warriors arched a brow, planting one hand on his hip. âWhat-â He cut himself off with a shriek as Legend suddenly sprang up, mud-caked arms outstretched and a devilish grin on his face. Warriors lunged away, or at least attempted to. His injured leg gave out from under him and sent him sprawling to the ground. He twisted onto his back, holding out both hands as Legend loomed over him.
âWait, wait, wait, you wouldnât attack a wounded man!â he cried, waving his hands frantically.
Legendâs grin only grew. âI absolutely would.â
Warriorsâ eyes widened but before Legend could descend on him, Wind tackled Legend from the side with a cry of, âDonât worry, Captain, Iâll save you!â Legend lifted a mud-caked hand and dug his fingers into Windâs hair, smearing it with mud and eliciting a sharp yelp of laughter from the sailor. Legend rolled as if to pin Wind beneath him but his eyes grew unfocused and he overshot, rolling over and off of Wind. Wind took Legendâs dizziness as an opportunity to pounce, uncaring that that only served to smear more mud onto him. But in rolling, Legend had moved closer to where Warriors was just beginning to stand. His arm shot out and snatched the captainâs elbow, yanking him back down with a yelp as he fell into the muddy heap. Twilight was half-surprised to hear a soft chuckle from beside him, glancing over to see Timeâs eyes crinkling at the corners as he watched the scene. Twilight felt a grin tugging at his mouth as he looked back at the three, the others all having similar reactions.
âNow weâre really all going to need to wash up,â Twilight remarked.
âYeah,â Four said. âWe should probably stop those three before they get any dirtier.
âProbably.â
Nobody moved to stop them.

Random Au idea I had while watching JoJo P5.... you know how the Boss of the mafia is called Diavolo?
Basically Ik is just a normal schoolkid who helps an injured man on her way home. Little does she know the man happens to be Lucifer, one of the leaders who runs the gang controlling the local area, who now owes her his life and will repay his debt as such
In the process he accidentally gets attached and so does the rest of his brothers, oops. Now the gang's all trying to make sure she doesn't get got by their enemies while also trying their best to keep the whole mafia thing a secret (also she's lowkey reforming them without even trying)
oooo this is a cool idea!! (also when i first started playing obey me i spent the first two months thinking of the jojo character EVERY time i saw diavolo, so this au definitely hits home for me)
so i guess diavolo is the... well, diavolo of this situation, the Big Boss of the whole operation, and lucifer is bucciarati, leader of a secondary team within the organisation... maybe the angels could be a rival gang, and the brothers got ousted (and defected to diavolo's side as a result)
it'd be funny if relations are SUPER tense between them on any given day, like one-misstep-from-getting-stabbed levels of bad blood, but as soon as ik shows up there's just a mutual "everyone shut the fuck up and act natural" moment
she shows up while the lucifer's gang is having a stand-off with simeon's and the brothers are all immediately like "SHSHHHSHHHHH. DON'T TELL HER" and simeon just nods and immediately is like "oh what a completely innocent gathering of friends this is! lucifer my friend how nice it is to see you again! i love being normal and hanging out with my friends!!!!"
#answering asks#anon asks#the newspaper club would also be a secondary team under diavolo#oh as for luke... i imagine he's already been inducted into the angels' side#similar to how the celestial realm instigates lucifer's rebellion - the angels' gang here is all kinds of Shady#(so he was like 'hey wtf' and got him and his brothers booted for his troubles)#in this case the angels' gang is like Super Immoral (even by mafia standards) about recruiting members#basically if you're in your entire family is in and luke's parents were in so now he is too#this is all probably part of the reason simeon plays along with the brothers while they're trying to hide things from ik#solomon and thirteen i imagine are sort of a wild card?#they've both got info and access to certain resources and so they just barter with whoever's offering the most money#jtta aus
