Deck Review - The Tarot by Oliver Hilbert
June 6, 2022
by eli
Tumblr media
Deck
This is The Tarot by Oliver Hibert. I got this deck as a gift from Avery <3. He ordered it in my name because I had something else coming so it was a nice surprise! This is by far my most expensive deck and one of my favourite to show off. I also just found out they have an Oracle Board as well, so you already know, as well as this sick ass Colouring Book. The artwork is beautiful, and I highly suggest checking out Oliver’s other stuff if you like classic psychedelic eyeballs.
Booklet
Tumblr media
Ok so this deck doesn’t actually come with a guide, but there is a little booklet explaining his background a bit. Basically he says that he doesn’t believe in making a guide because it’s up to the reader to interpret. It is organized like a traditional Raider-Waite but with one extra Magic card as a wild card. You can tell in the cards how much work was put into this. Classic ink and paper art tends to get looked over a lot but the lines on this deck are incredibly crisp. Despite being marker there are like no bleedover spots and the colours are fun and vibrant. It is a sin and a crime that I don’t have a blacklight to take pictures with yet but as soon as it happens it’s gonna look sick af. I love all the tiddies, ooze, and green pubes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spirit
I showed this deck to my husband because I was like 'lol this is Sai' so it was very obvious who was in this deck. Sai is less 'drunk girl hyping you up in the bathroom' and more 'overlooked prophet tweaking outside of the gas station proclaiming 'I am the beast I worship'. Like, I was just there to get a drink but, you know, he ain't wrong. Offerings are very easy with him, he'll take whatever you got if you offer. He first came to me as a child when I was a huge weeb. He's seen me at my worst and my best and knows that bitching and crying doesn't change shit. He is the embodiment of 'I am cringe, but I am free'. Once I met him again as an adult in a trance he told me he was taking me to hell and then we went to 711 lmao.
Reading Style
Because there isn't a guidebook for this deck I usually go off of intuition with a quick glance at my Tarot app. His tone is often a little harsh but it's the truth. This isn't the bestie who's gonna let you go back to your ex this is the bestie who hexed him for cheating on you. He's there to support you in whatever bad habit you want to give into but you're going to pay your dues when they come. You COULD go apeshit, drink, smoke, hook up or whatever, but don't get mad when shit goes wrong. If you tried your best and shit still went wrong, he'll help turn it into a shitshow. Not everyone makes the right choices but you can still make the best of it.
Suggested Readings
His specialty is shadow work, people who are in bad situations that are out of their control (shitty relationships, shitty housing, shitty jobs), parent issues, inner child issues, trauma in general, dealing with curses/hexes, and to see people's true nature (including your own).

slytherin house dynamics under snape hc
this was inspired by this post by fuocogo that stated that slytherins probably know sign language because they need to communicate with the creatures living in the Black Lake and that tickled my imagination.
this will also focus on slytherin house specifically with snape as the head of house, because i like to think that after his own experiences he would have reformed a lot of what goes on inside, especially with him aligning to the light.
disclaimer: i haven’t reread the books in over a decade. i also don’t play any of the games so everything is really just based on how i remember the material i read, with some bits from the movies, as well as other hcs people have
snape does not tolerate bullying and any slytherin caught will answer to him personally. draco gets away with it a lot because i feel like it’s either he does it where the teachers don’t/can’t see, or snape makes a judgement call on the ones he does see (like the ones in potions where draco taunts the gryffindors). he definitely will not have tolerated draco calling hermione mudblood though. not even lucius’ son can get away with that
he keeps strict tabs on his little snakes - he interviews first years personally and at the start of the year assigns each one an older student to act as both a guide (like a mentor) and a guard. he does not encourage slytherins to walk alone, and each slytherin is assigned to and responsible for another.
he doesn’t openly encourage inter-house friendships but also doesn’t say no to them either. he turns a blind eye when he sees any of his snakes consorting with ravenclaws for homework help or hufflepuffs for trading sweets, but it does grate on his nerves a bit when he sees them interacting with gryffindors in a friendly manner. he doesn’t stop them however
slytherins do not lie to their head of house. the older students are quick to tell the first years that snape always knows when they lie and it’s just not worth it
snape advocates for his snakes’ continued and expanded learning - he’s well-informed of their background before they attend hogwarts and assigns them learning materials with homework as first years to fill in gaps that they may lack. this is especially useful to the half-bloods and muggleborns who may not have had any magical exposure prior to hogwarts (not unlike himself). as they grow older he also keeps an eye on their likely strengths in different fields and suggests to them possible materials for advanced learning
knowing that a lot of his snakes are from pureblood, bigoted families who would rat out any suspicious anti-dark lord dealings within the house, he encourages them to duel once or twice a month, but with very strict house rules: (1) he always has to be there; (2) hexes and curses only, no Unforgiveables; (3) to not tell the other houses that they are doing such and; (4) to not use any of the more harmful hexes on any of their fellow students or teachers. as a side effect, slytherins are actually quite good at DADA because snape also sneaks in a lesson or two and he knows it’s these students that will need them the most
they have a distress signal (maybe a small item?) that the students can use to contact their head of house directly if they’re in trouble. students have been known to trigger it even during the hols, and snape always assists in the best way he can
he never addresses problems nor gives praise in public. everything is discussed in his office and is always strictly confidential
his snakes are used to the rule that ‘whatever happens in hogwarts, stays in hogwarts’ so even if they see snape at any of their parents’ parties or meetings, they either ignore him or only acknowledge him subtly
he has a potions cabinet that’s for slytherin use only - these contain the basic first-aid potions and other solutions that the students may need and that he or they can use within the safety of the house, away from prying eyes
any student showing budding interest in the dark arts will be mentored by snape personally (he’ll give them a hell of a time to subtly discourage them from continuing)
slytherins are loyal to snape because they know they can trust him and are safe with him
discussions about the dark lord are not forbidden, in fact they’re encouraged, but only within the house. it gives snape a chance to gauge where his snakes stand and an opportunity to change their mind should they be in treacherous waters
he watches every game, every contest where a slytherin is represented and makes sure to sit in a spot where his student would see him
any internal issues are resolved by him mocking up a trial court that comprises the entire house. students are given a chance to plead, defend, allege, bargain, and stand as the jury. he stands as the judge

Henry, Sharing Experiences
Thank you so much for the patience and constant support, @xpegasusuniverse! I hope you like it!
Summary: Interestingly enough, there was no known School of Magic at the Altean continent -- apart from a very specific one only known to Plegians. Henry was pleasantly surprised when he found out that there were people who went to a magical school just like him when he overheard them talking in Askr...
Commission info HERE and HERE!
__________________________
Askr, home to the one and only Summoner who’s rumored to be able to lead the Order of Heroes to victory against any foe. In such a place where many people from differing backgrounds joined hands to work together side by side, a wide variety of groups were formed.
What started as a simple meeting between fellow practitioners of their preferred art of war turned into complex classes with a rich curriculum during the time the Heroes had between battles. One of the most prominent of those were the magic classes: they varied from beginner to intermediate to the Mastery class, which only consisted of the teachers of the previous two courses.
There were mages from all walks of life within this niche, which in turn only enriched the students’ experiences. As a matter of fact, some of them had met one another back in their home world, as it was the case with the four mages who attend to the School of Sorcery in Fhirdiad: Annette, Constance, Lorenz and Mercedes were all attending to the lectures in Askr just as they had done so in Faerghus.
Though, this time, they were all classmates.
“As riveted as I am to be able to attend magical classes with you, Mercedes, the mere thought of not being able to do so back at the School of Sorcery is enough to make me want to reverse the hands of time myself!” Constance shook her shoulders after a sigh, walking close enough to Mercedes to hold her arm.
“Oh, yeah, Mercie mentioned you two just missed each other, right? Wah, I’m so sorry, Constance… But hey, at least now you’re together! And we’re all together!” Annette hyped up beside Mercedes, puffing her cheeks and chest up.
“I suppose, yes,” Constance lifted her chin, “still, to think that we could have been reunited much sooner…”
Mercedes smiled softly, basically sandwiched between her friends. “What matters is that we’re all here now, right? And learning so much, too!”
“Aptly put, Mercedes!” Lorenz intervened from the side as they were all leaving the library that had been hijacked by the mages to be used as a classroom. “To think that all of us attended the Royal School of Sorcery but only ended up as classmates in another world! The goddess truly plays her cards well, do you not think?”
Hearing Lorenz’s words, a white-haired head popped up from behind him, as someone who had also just come out of the library. “Ohhh, so there are magical schools in other worlds, too! I wonder how different they were from the one in Plegia, though.”
“What manner of-” Lorenz jumped out of his skin, almost letting out a disgraceful yelp. “Good lad, I would ask that you do not sneak up on your peers! A word of caution.”
“Oh, whoops, sorry about that. Robin sometimes scolds me about that, too -- guess I’ve been hanging out with Kellam too much, nyaha!”
“Whyever are you speaking to us, good sir? We’ve places to be, so if your business is over…” Constance lifted her chin condescendingly, ready to wrap her arm around Mercedes’ to lead the way back to where they were going.
“No, no, wait! I got curious about this sorcery school in your world. You see,” Henry matched the pace, inserting himself between Constance and Lorenz, “the one back in my world -- heck, back in my country -- taught a veeeery specific kinda magic. Eeevery mage born there only does dark magic!”
“My word, dark magic?!” Lorenz let out an exclamation of surprise. “Back in our world, I’ve known only a few who are capable of wielding such dangerous yet powerful magic…”
“See?” Henry pointed to Lorenz. “I was actually surprised when I got here and found out that there were so few dark mages! I mean, back home they were made in the HEAPS, nyaha!”
Annette’s eyes shone. “How different was your school life, uh-”
“The name’s Henry! I’ve been here for a while so I know allll about you guys!” His smile grew pointedly as a shadow covered his thin eyes. He then giggled, shaking off the cold that had crept in their spines. “But I asked first! How’s the School of Sorcery back in your world?”
“Um, being asked like that at point blank, it’s kinda hard to even remember what to say, you know? Um, umm…” Annette widened her eyes, then scrunched her face in deep thought. “We had… different classes? Ahah, wait, that’s obvious-”
“If you are asking about how the classes were divided, Henry, then the curriculum here in Askr wildly differs from the Royal School of Sorcery in Fhirdiad.” Constance stepped in as Annette mumbled and Mercedes patted her head. “There were classes focused on potion-making, illusory magic, red and white magic, summoning circles-”
“Whoa, whoaaa! Potion? Summoning? Illusory? That’s the same thing back home! How come you’re not a dark mage, then?” Henry tilted his head to the side in wonder.
After all, to him, making potions, illusions and summoning ghastly beings were simply different kinds of hexes. One would collect materials, which could serve as the sacrifice needed for the hex to work depending on the complexity of it; dissect the magical property of each piece of each ingredient (because bat wings were a common material for memory-related hexes, but bat eyes were great for indigestion) and how they interacted with one another so they could be mixed into a magical instrument.
Yet, what Constance meant by those were pouring magical power into concoctions and culinary as a means of enhancing them as well as summoning stronger red magic. The four classmates exchanged curious glances, indeed confused by Henry’s, well, confusion.
If their classes were the same, why, indeed, weren’t they versed in the same kinds of magic?
Noticing the silent conversation going on between them, Henry widened his smile. “Hey, hey, what else? Did you have long-range concentration? Magical energy expansion? I can throw a curse from wayyyyy into Embla from this spot, nyaha!”
All four gasped in unison. “E-Embla?! Surely you jest! No matter how much it borders Askr, it is still another country entirely!” Constance was the one who spoke first, followed by Annette’s vigorous nodding and Mercedes’ sigh of wonder.
“Huhh, so no magical energy expansion? I mean, I heard that a guy managed to curse one of Ylisse’s princes from the Plegian Castle, so doing it from here to Embla is a piece of cake!” He threw his head back in laughter, remembering how excited his teacher was to talk about the ‘glory of the past’ of a guy that died hundreds of years ago. “So how does your magic work, then? Only short range? Ohh, wait, but dark magic in combat is more limited, so maybe I mixed the horses there, nyaha!”
Lorenz awkwardly cleared his throat. “I-indeed, it would be unthinkable to send a highly concentrated mass of magic across countries so easily. I am, however, intrigued by these so-called ‘hexes’ -- as I have only heard worrisome words about them…”
“They’re the most fun things to do! We had a whole term on ‘how to spread a curse from someone’s little finger until their heart without anyone noticing’ and boy was it a BLAST to do all those experiments -- literally! We exploded so many things...” A shade covered Henry’s thin eyes once again as he giggled happily, which made Lorenz gulp instinctively.
“That was rather specific!” Mercedes mentioned. “I don’t recall the Royal School of Sorcery to have anything like that…”
“Perhaps the seminar ‘the art of levitating oneself as a second-nature’ that had been part of the curriculum since the foundation? It IS completely different from the ‘Levitating’ class…” Constance twisted her lips.
Annette, who had her head down the whole time, suddenly jumped from Mercedes’ side to Henry’s. “OH! You know what I just remembered?”
Henry smiled widely. “Eh? What?”
“The way you’re talking about these awesome stuff like they’re normal-- we gotta take you to Lysithea! She didn’t go to the same School of Sorcery we did, but she’s AMAZING with magic, like you! I saw her snap a lightning bolt from the other side of the battlefield like it was nothing!” Annette went from admiring to bragging about her classmate, listing the many occasions that Lysithea managed to impress her -- and how she considered the other as a rival of sorts.
“Woow! I don’t really think I’m that amazing with magic, but I can crack a few skulls more than other people, nyahaha…!” He chuckled darkly before taking Annette’s hand. “Let’s go back to the library! She’s that girl with white hair, right? She stayed behind!”
“Ohh, ohh! She did? I gotta try harder to catch up to her, then! C’mon, Mercie, let’s go!” Full on her try-hard mode, Annette’s eyes shone with the prospect of being among two magical prodigies and the amount of knowledge she could acquire from them.
“Heehee, don’t pull, Annie, I’m coming!” Mercedes dangled behind her over-excited best friend. “Constance, sweetie, you too!”
“Very well! Surely my vast knowledge will be needed!”
Lorenz watched the scene unfold with wide eyes, suddenly finding himself alone. “Why- how dare you abandon your peer in such a manner!” He ran after the group with an offended tone.
Little did they know about the barrage of questions Lysithea would ask Henry after hearing about his magical prowess, wondering if they, perhaps, shared a circumstance…

resources that i use for my userboxes and other things that are free (with links lol) and applicable examples:
Tumblr media
Userbox Maker: Since we’re talking about userboxes, this one is indeed a no-brainer. The interface is easy and simple: You type the message, you change the colors, and then voila. The site doesn’t have images to add to the userbox ID square, thats up to you to put something there later.
What does it offer me?/Pros:
well, it offers you a way to make really easy userboxes with a color scheme (some are premade, others you can choose the colors) and resizeable text.
Cons:
The whole ‘Use this code in the English Wikipedia’ to get the box is LOST on me completely. im savvy but im not that savvy! What i normally do is enlarge and cut it, make the background transparent, then make the edit from there for what I need. Is that illegal? Who knows.
The colors of the premade color schemes are very dull and kinda washed out/ muted. You can change the color scheme of you box manually in the hex boxes, but even then they’re not as bright as you would hope. But hey, its free, what can you do? Here’s the color hex site that I use: X and here’s a pixel art maker bc I know the kids love that: P
Tumblr media
LunaPic: Allows you to make transparents, flags, and other little photo edits like crop and filters. Con is that you have to have the thing you want to edit saved on your computer already, thus if you wanna do a quick edit of something in your clipboard you have to save it first aka, a hassle if you’re trying to meme
What does it offer me?/Pros:
See all those tabs right there? each one has a bunch of effects and things that go with them, so you’re bound to find something useful on the site no matter what you’re looking for, complete with sliders for easy adjustments.  There’s color tinting, watermarking, transparency, pixelations, and the list goes on. You can also draw but its no PTS if you catch my drift.
There’s a editing history at the bottom of the page for you to see what you’ve done to your image. The site automatically carries your image over to the next tool you click on (if the tool is applicable to it, such as Draw from Color Tint). This is also a con if you accidentally edit your picture to something else entirely, but the history allows you to jump back an edit.
No flash needed for a lot of them!
Cons:
The site it massive in your browser, and because of the automatic drop down when you hover, you end up getting this overlap over the category and may end up clicking what you didn’t mean to. Easy fix is zooming out to about 80% to combat the overlaps. Because of this, if you’re going to use your phone, do it in landscape mode. wont be the best experience but it gets shit done.
site has ads but not pervasive ones. if you really dont like them, use an adblock.
For flag editing, the colors are a little rough, and require pretty damn good memory of what the right colors you want are called if you want a richer or more specific look. there is a color wheel though, which i believe is new.
Tumblr media
Bloggif: another photo editing site, but its hella retro  kinda. I believe the site is originally french so hey. lets you make old internet type gifs and icons, complete with glitter effects,fx effects, and even little smileys to add to your stuff.
What does it offer me/Pros:
Truth be told: not very much! There are only 20 editing tools on the site to use at your leisure, a significant downgrade from LunaPic’s 200+, but what it lacks in editing it makes up for the lovely retro feel it has. There is gif support, including deconstructing gifs if that’s your flavor, and the infamous glitter tools kids love these days!
some of the tools actually have lots of options with them, for example, the ‘Animated smiley’ tool, which offers 16 smiley shapes, numerous little add ons, and the ability to upload your own image to edit into this ‘smiley’. There are options at the bottom for the blink speed (Rapide, Moyen, Lent, Aucun which in layman translation is Fast, Slow, Slower, Stopped).
can support small images and larger images, but i wouldn’t recommend trying to over power the site. Here’s an example of the smiley tool in effect:
Tumblr media
It’s fast! And really easy. You can do it from your phone as well! There are photo collages, animated text with effects on the letters and a few other things.
Flash not needed for all of them!
Cons:
‘Swiss army knife of photo editing’ is a bit of a stretch since there are so few tools.
For smilies, there is no free placement of the little effects. They pick a spot and stay there. To layer, you have to reupload the smiley and  drop another effect.
Just not a lot to offer, tbh...but retro! and cute!
Tumblr media
Blingee: ye olde blingee.com, lets you make blingees for that really early 2000s feel. TRES IMPORTANTE: to make blingees you need to set up an account (its free). You also need to use firefox (if DDG works im not sure i havent used it with that browser) and update your flash to actually make them after setting up an account. IDKY but it does not work with chrome whether you fixed your flash or not. the site gives you options to share your blingees as well, and you can also see shit from like ...2006 sksk
What does it offer me?
The ability to make blingees. What more can you want? If you’ve been online and a little tech savvy for a lot of your childhood, you may even have a blingee account still. the site is still active hasn’t updated its look for a WHILE, but it’s a pleasing site to look at.
Variety is of the essence here, as there are more than just blingees to create. There are internet postcards and stamps as well, with lots of little effects to add like sparkles and glitter and backgrounds of your problematic kins.
it’s cute ahaha <3
Cons:
G-D FORBID YOU LOSE YOUR PASSWORD!! I believe there is a bug right now that won’t let you sign up, even though the FAQ claims that you don’t need an account to make blingees (you very much do!!). I have emailed about the process of logging in after you reset your password and if there is a wait period until you can log in again, and I’m still waiting for a response. I also told them about the signing up part. I’ll update later...
You need flash. Flash is leaving soon :(
Pretty damn confusing to use actually. So much so you wonder if it’s worth the trouble...
Honestly its a very archaic site, would recommend using Bloggif frfr
Tumblr media
Glitterfly: it’s glitter. its a lot of glitter. Theres 50 cent glitter images on this site. It’s legit.
What does it offer me?/Pros:
Glitter. And lots of things to put glitter on. And i mean A LOT!
Allows you to upload a picture to throw glitter on.
The jonas brothers are here. and camp rock.
Make glitter words, change their color, and roll that sucker in some sparkles!
askjhdjasf theres a tab to make??? a fucking PIMP CXARD/???JKHFSK (its just an american express black card stock image with a fake number on it)
Cons:
my G-d is it ugly. So much purple....
use an adblock
Not a lot of glitter effect options or color options for the words
No way to get rid of the watermark at the bottom, but what’s a little credit?
Tumblr media
FOR NOW that’s about it! For some artwork, I use either my own drawings or images that I just...have on my phone or free cliparts that fit the topic. Uh...that’s all, goodbye!

redirect link from this post - don’t reblog!
Tumblr media
static preview / pastebin
you can zoom in in the preview to see the topbars (but it’s not exactly the same as a real tablet, which would be longer and thinner).
do NOT trust your tumblr preview when you go to the customization page or html editor. It messes npf photosets and more things, so you should check your blog page to see the changes. That and the preview window is smaller than your desktop and will likely show the tablet view.
important: I made my best to make spotify posts work when uploaded from mobile and edited with xkit, and if the thumbnail disappears after being edited it’s because tumblr is implementing a ‘you can’t modify posts uploaded from mobile’ policy and they disappear from dash too, not because of my code. Best to leave them untouched if possible.
some extra credits:
the gifpack I used for my container is from @octomoosey (see this and specifically this post ), the one for the sidebar is by @scottvandyne and is here
icons are from fontawesome, fonts from googlefont, background from pixabay modified by me, and so is the feather. Gif has been made from a final fantasy video.
In my credit page, as always, links to the posts with the scripts/fixes/tutorials I used in my blog and that I mentioned in the post that brought you here. Also, as always, audio-posts, tooltips, animations, and most things have been learned through octomoosey’s tutorials.
under read more a few explanations I promised in the other post, the sizes of several theme parts, and some instructions -which may be unneeded to people used to mess around with themes but I wanted to make sure those who are new to it can easily do it too/have some suggestions to follow if in doubt.
explanation about spotify players not being resized to be as small as possible:
the symbols you can use for your lists mark, right now a pentagon: here on w3schools.  You can copy the symbol or the second code present, the hex one, adding a \ right before. Or just copy the image itself. Could be a keyboard symbol too if you google them and paste them there.
when it comes to spotify posts I could have made it so that only the player is visible and there is no album art, as opposed to having, in the case of very small posts, a small but empty square where the album art is meant to be, but if I leave only the player visible and you post a playlist instead of one track people will have to click next every time to find out what other song are there, not have the menu under it to pick from like they do now. There will be only the player instead of the list you can see in the preview.
If you want to change that and just leave the audio-player with no album art but also no playlists tracks visible, you have to go in the html editor (use ctrl + f to search for .spotify_audio_player ) and follow the very quick instruction, it's just one number to change: max-height going from calc({select:postsize}px / 2)  to 80px.
sizes and some instructions:
that said:
.sidebar1img (in case for some reason you want to find it) , or the witch gif in sidebar1, is 180px for 220px. I’m actually using a smaller gif that got stretched to fit.
.sidebar2img or the feather you click on in the second sidebar, has no fixed height, just a max-width of 90% (and of 100px when in the topbar because it’s for smaller screens), but just so you know my image is 208px of width x 205 of height and I’d recommend a similar size. (.boounce-animation is what you need to look for, there are two for the different screen-sizes, if you want to edit position or size )
I’d also suggest using overlays (gif or big images) for container and sidebars backgrounds, especially the container as its width depends on posts size, and on desktop its minimum width is the post-size + 60px, max width is post-size + 80px, but on tablets it becomes 98% (biggest tablet that I can think of is 800px). Mine in the preview is 500px of width x 281px, a gif that can stretch because it’s an overlay from octoomosey’s packs.
(if you need to find them they are called .container , .sidebar1 , .sidebar2 present again at the bottom of the css within @media (max-width:1024px) {  } .
topbars are max 800px wide and max 120px tall so that should be your images size too (if you don’t upload any you’ll get the sidebar ones by default, stretched to fit.
the sidebars max width is 250px but they are 100% tall. Images will stretch to fit but for that reason I suggest at least 600px tall ones as that’s the min screen size of a desktop, so that the stretching won’t hide anything.  Of course when it comes to sidebars you can just try out your fave images and see if you like the result, they don’t have to be overlays or big patterns.
In any case you can always go to the html editor and look for .sidebar1 and .sidebar2, and mess with background-size, background-position, background-repeat and even background-attachment so you can find the perfect solution for you if the default one doesn’t work.
 background-blend-mode:none
I’m actually using the same giant gif of 1000x563 because I liked the final result, so I didn’t need to change them for my topbars in the preview.
The blending is the same as the one you pick for regular sidebars, if that doesn’t work for you, you can look for
.topsidebar1 and .topsidebar2 in the html editor (use ctrl+f to find things) and add
to erase it and just have your normal image, or try some of the ones you know like multiply, hard-light etc.
here’s my example:
I used in sidebar1 an image of 250px x 600. In sidebar2 is 361x700. (bg color: violet and blending mode on multiply so all light spots would be purple-y) and it resized just fine.
Tumblr media
and 800px x120px images for my topbars which work even on super small screens

5e Nocturne, the Eternal Nightmare build (League of Legends)
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Alex Flores. Made for Riot Games)
In my continuation of terrifying builds for terrifying characters here’s a build for the scariest champion in League of Legends. The prime horror icon on the rift who everyone points to and says “now that is a scary champion!” Nocturne!
Fiddlesticks? How could that bag of twigs and metal be scary?
GOALS
Do I scare you, summoner? - Nocturne is a champion of fear... I mean at least until someone else came along. Still pretty good at making other champs terrified though.
The light is fading - Fighting Nocturne with spells is pointless: cast one and he gets more powerful.
Darkness... - An assassin is scary. An assassin who can turn off the lights, pop up behind you and scream “OOOGA BOOGA!” is even scarier!
RACE
There’s several things Nocturne could be and none of them really fit the description of “shadow spirit demon.” So fuck it may as well be a Changeling, to take the form of whatever your prey fears the most! As a Changeling you get +2 to Charisma and +1 to another ability of your choice... which can be Charisma! So fuck it +3 to Charisma! You also get two skill proficiencies of your choice thanks to Changeling Instincts (take Intimidation and Insight to see through your prey and strike them with fear) and you can learn two languages to compliment your Common language. (Pick whatever it doesn’t matter.)
But of course the main feature of a Changeling is their Shapechanger trait. It’s basically Disguise Self but your clothes don’t change: you still have to have a basic arrangement of limbs, can’t change your size so much that you change size categories, can’t disguise as something you’ve never seen, etc. etc. etc. But even so there’s more than enough shapechanging you can do to strike fear into your foes!
ABILITY SCORES
15; CHARISMA - You are a being of ultimate horror who knows exactly how to get under someone’s skin.
14; DEXTERITY - Nocturne is an assassin who can travel across massive swaths of the map in an instant, and your arm blades don’t seem like they’d be too heavy.
13; WISDOM - To truly terrify someone you’ve gotta know what makes them tick.
12; INTELLIGENCE - You need smarts to be scary. You need to know why they’re scared.
10; CONSTITUTION - Nocturne is a squishy assassin. (Though that being said feel free to swap INT and CON if you want better health but worse RP.)
8; STRENGTH - Nocturne is a ghost so weak that he can only attack you in your dreams... at least until your dreams become real.
BACKGROUND
There’s no background for “Ancient Nightmare Demon” so how about you join an assassin’s club instead? The Volstrucker Agent background from Wildemount gives you proficiency in Deception and Stealth along with a Poisoner’s Kit and a language of your choice. (Again pick whatever.)
Your feature Shadow Network lets you talk to other demons... the worst of the worst... assassin mains. If you write a letter in special ink, address it to a member of the Volstrucker, and throw it into a fire, the letter will materialize on the person of the agent you addressed it to. The ink used to send a letter is the same as the ink to write in a spellbook, and writing a letter in this ink costs 10 gp per page. Tell Talon you’re ganking, or tell Evelynn that she’s a hoe.
This background is fairly easy to adapt outside of Wildemount but be ready to alter it in case your DM doesn’t allow Wildemount content.

THE BUILD
LEVEL 1 - MONK 1
What? Were you expecting the magical nightmare demon to have magic? Well we need Monk levels for a number of things (notably Saving Throws) but firstly let’s talk skills: take proficiency in Acrobatics and History to jump into people’s dreams and know exactly how to frighten them! You also get a tool proficiency so take Brewer’s Supplies. A spirit making spirits? How droll!
As a Monk you have Unarmored Defense equal to your Dexterity plus your Wisdom. Yeah Nocturne does kinda wear armor, but you’ll have to go without it if you want to use Martial Arts. While unarmored and unarmed with nothing but Monk weapons (which are simple weapons and shortswords - I’d argue that your arm blades are sickles?) you gain the following benefits:
Your fists and Monk weapons can be used with DEX instead of STR.
Your unarmed strike becomes a d4 (and will increase as you level up in Monk.)
When you make an attack with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action.
LEVEL 2 - MONK 2
Second level Monks can chase down their prey with Unarmored Movement, increasing their movement by 10 feet while unarmored (as the name suggests.) But if you need to chase them down faster with Duskbringer then Ki will help with that. You have a number of Ki points equal to your level in Monk which you can use in a number of ways:
Flurry of Blows will let you spend 1 ki point to make two unarmed strikes as a bonus action after attacking, instead of just one.
Patient Defense will activate Shroud of Darkness for 1 ki point so you can take the Dodge action as a bonus action on your turn.
Step of the Wind will let you take the Disengage or Dash action as a bonus action on your turn at the cost of 1 Ki, and your jump distance is doubled for the turn.
This should be more than enough to chase down your foes, but realize that your Ki points are limited. They come back on a short rest though, so you needn’t worry much.
LEVEL 3 - WARLOCK 1
Oh hey look it’s Warlock again. Warlocks can choose their subclass at level 1 so it’s time to go Unearthed Arcana with the Undead patron, not to be confused with the Undying patron which doesn’t have the abilities we want.
Abilities such as Form of Dread: As a Bonus Action you can transform for 1 minute to gain temporary hitpoints and immunity to the Frightened condition, but most importantly all your attacks will force a Wisdom save on the target or else frighten them for a round. You can transform a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
And of course Warlocks get Pact Magic: you learn two cantrips from the Warlock list. To attack around you with your Umbra Blades take Sword Burst, and to let your foes know for whom the bell toles take Toll the Dead, because not taking Eldritch Blast would be a true nightmare.
You can also learn two first level spells: Hex will let you single an enemy out to do more damage to them, and Cause Fear lets you cause fear! Funny how that works. Hit your foes with Unspeakable Horror before cutting them down.
LEVEL 4 - WARLOCK 2
Second level Warlocks get Eldritch Invocations to boost their abilities in the realm of dreams. Devil’s Sight will let you see through magical darkness which is good considering that your ultimate (which we don’t have yet) makes the whole world dark. For your second invocation Misty Visions will let you create an illusion of your target’s greatest fears. And then don’t even have to be asleep!
You also get another spell but we’ll hold onto it until...
LEVEL 5 - WARLOCK 3
Third level Warlocks can learn second level spells like Blindness / Deafness from the Undead list for some more darkness, and Cloud of Daggers, because a spinning knife box is pretty spooky.
Yes I am aware that you can get the Darkness spell proper at this level but wait for a minute!
Of course more importantly you get your Pact Boon at level 3 and for a sword-arm ghost take Pact of the Blade, to make your swords on your arms or somewhere else on your body.
LEVEL 6 - WARLOCK 4
4th level means an Ability Score Improvement, and since you’re going to be doing a lot of slashing take a Dexterity increase.
You also get another spell at this level along with another cantrip: Suggestion will let you mess with a creature’s thoughts a little to make them do things they’d never dream of! For your cantrip Prestidigitation lets you do a bunch of minor major spooky stuff. Because the true fear is not taking a d10 damage cantrip.
Tumblr media

LEVEL 7 - MONK 3
You’re probably wondering what the point of these Monk levels are. Simple: Way of Shadows Monks are masters of darkness thanks to Shadow Arts. You can now cast spells using your Ki: you can cast Minor Illusion for free and for 2 Ki points you can cast Darkvision, Pass without Trace, Silence, or DARKNESS. You also get Deflect Missiles at level 3, making you an unkillable nightmare. Or at least a resilient nightmare.
LEVEL 8 - MONK 4
4th level in Monk means another Ability Score Improvement: more Dexterity is needed to survive. Speaking of survive: Slow Fall will help in case you get stuck in that dream where you’re constantly falling.
LEVEL 9 - MONK 5
5th level Monks get an Extra Attack, letting them attack an extra time with their arm blades, or their fists as your Martial Arts die also increase to a d6.
But of course to scare your foes to the point that they can barely move Stunning Strike will let you force a Constitution save or stun your target! I mean, it probably won’t work because your Wisdom is so low but...
LEVEL 10 - WARLOCK 5
Quickly hopping to 5th level of Warlock for Shroud of Darkness: grab Counterspell to counter any spells coming your way. You also get another Eldritch Invocation and while Nocturne doesn’t turn invisible in on the rift One with Shadows will let you hide effectively in bushes.
LEVEL 11 - MONK 6
6th level Monks can finally embrace the darkness thanks to Shadow Step. When in dim light or darkness you can teleport up to 60 feet as a bonus action to an unoccupied space you can see, as long as that spot is also in dim light or darkness. You also have advantage on the first melee attack you make after teleporting.
You can make Darkness with your Ki which means that this ability should almost always be available. So let the Paranoia set in before jumping behind your foes to scream “OOOGA BOOGA!” Oh and your Unarmored Movement increases by 5 feet, up to 45 feet now.
Tumblr media

LEVEL 12 - WARLOCK 6
6th level Undead Warlocks are Grave Touched. You no longer need to eat, drink, or breathe, because nightmare logic. Additionally, when you hit a creature with an attack you can replace the damage type with necrotic damage. While you are using your Form of Dread, you can roll one additional damage die when determining the necrotic damage the target takes. So instead of doing bludgeoning damage with your fists you can do necrotic damage instead, and rip at their minds! Wait no that’s psychic damage...
Regardless you can learn a third level spell like Speak with Dead, because what’s spookier than a talking corpse?
LEVEL 13 - WARLOCK 7
7th level Warlocks get another Eldritch Invocation: to never lose track of your prey take Ghostly Gaze for some All Seeing Spirit.
You can also learn 4th level spells like Shadow of Moil to shroud yourself in darkness. Yeah I hope you didn’t think I’d stop linking to that sound clip!
LEVEL 14 - WARLOCK 8
8th level Warlocks get another Ability Score Improvement: maximize your nightmare blades with a capped Dexterity modifier. You can also learn another spell like Death Ward to come back from anything your foes may throw at you. Guardian Angel? What a nightmare!
LEVEL 15 - WARLOCK 9
9th level Warlocks get another Eldritch Invocation. Want to hover? Ascendant Step lets you hover!
You can also learn 5th level spells at this level so it’s time to finally give people proper nightmares with the Dream spell. It’s a fairly complicated spell but in essence you can project yourself into someone’s dreams to talk to them, or to yell “OOOGA BOOGA” at them to make them take Psychic damage while also being unable to get a proper long rest.
LEVEL 16 - WARLOCK 10
10th level Undead Warlocks can leave their Mortal Husk: You gain resistance to necrotic damage, and you are using your Form of Dread, you instead become immune to necrotic damage.
Additionally, when you are reduced to 0 hit points you can explode! Each creature within 30 feet of you takes necrotic damage equal to 2d10 + your warlock level and you get up with 1 HP. Once you revive this way, you receive a point of exhaustion and you can’t do so again until you finish 1d4 long rests. Look: Nocturne doesn’t explode in-game but there’s nothing saying he can’t do so.
You also don’t get another spell at this level, but you do get another cantrip! Mind Sliver is an Unearthed Arcana spell (that’s been confirmed for Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything) which will let you further reach into your prey’s mind, and see their deepest fears of not taking a d10 damage cantrip.
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Riot Games)
LEVEL 17 - WARLOCK 11
11th level Warlocks get their 6th level Mystic Arcanum, which is a 6th level slot that comes back on a Long Rest. So it’s basically a normal spell slot but you can’t upcast your Pact Magic or your Mystic Arcanum. There are some good options to choose from (shoutout to Mental Prison) but if you want to freak out your foes with a spooky eye trick take Eyebite. Along with making your eyes (and I quote!) “become an inky void imbued with dread power“ you can force your foes to make Wisdom saves or suffer a variety of effects. I suggest reading the spell over properly to learn everything it can do.
Oh but you know what else is cool? Regular Warlock spells! And you get a third pact slot no less! I’m actually going to suggest hopping back to 4th level for Hallucinatory Terrain to shape the world around you into one of pure nightmares.
LEVEL 18 - WARLOCK 12
12th level Warlocks get an Ability Score Improvement, and seeing as we’ve had an uneven Wisdom score this entire time I’m actually going to suggest grabbing Resilient (Wisdom) this time for some spell defense and some better stats.
But more importantly you can learn another Eldritch Invocation so it’s finally time to get value out of your ability to cause fear! Lifedrinker will let you fill your blade (because technically you only have one) with Unspeakable Horror, allowing you to deal extra Necrotic damage equal to your Charisma modifier when you strike with them!
LEVEL 19 - WARLOCK 13
13th level Warlocks get 7th level Mystic Arcanum such as Power Word Pain to subject a target with less than 100 health to Unspeakable Horror.
You can also learn another Pact Magic spell and have you ever had that feeling of someone watching you? Well Scrying will let you watch people. Cut some claw marks through a girl’s blue dress and use the cloth fragments to watch her when you can’t strike. …That was a Nightmare on Elm Street reference…
LEVEL 20 - WARLOCK 14
14th level Undead Warlocks can truly instill Paranoia with Spirit Projection. As an action you can go beyond your body, leaving it behind in an unconscious state of suspended animation. Your spirit can remain outside your body for up to 1 hour or until your concentration is broken. When your projection ends, your spirit returns to your body or your body magically teleports to your spirit’s space (your choice). While projecting your spirit, you gain the following benefits:
Your spirit and body gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
When you cast a spell of the conjuration or necromancy school, the spell doesn’t require any components as long as they don’t have a gold cost.
You have a flying speed equal to your walking speed and can hover. You can move through creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain, but you take 1d10 force damage if you end your turn inside a creature or an object.
While you are using your Form of Dread, you regain hit points equal to half the amount of necrotic damage dealt with an attack once per turn.
Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, but one hour of pure terror should be enough to slay any foe.
FINAL BUILD
PROS
Drip drop; the sound of blood - While it’s mostly tied to your Form of Dread you do a lot of damage. 3d6 + 23 damage with your blade(s and fist) every turn, increasing to 6d6 + 23 with Form of Dead.
Their twilight approaches - You have quite a lot of mobility. 45 feet of movement speed and if you want you can hover. Or even fly! And of course you have dozens of ways to teleport around the battlefield and be everywhere at once.
Are you getting tired yet? - It wasn’t my intention but you are remarkably hard to kill. Good saving throws (or at least good enough), good AC, incredible mobility, and ways to both heal and grant yourself temporary hitpoints.
CONS
Afraid of the dark? - The sad truth about fear in D&D is that most high-level monsters are immune to it. Necrotic damage is thankfully spared but even then if you face an enemy who’s resistant to Necrotic damage (yet alone immune!) you’ll run into a lot of problems.
People are flames to be blotted out - While both your Ki points and your Pact Magic slots come back on a Short Rest a lot of your best abilities are tied to Long Rests. Perhaps it’s the nature of Unearthed Arcana, but even then your pact spells are mostly meant for utility, which is fine and all but it means that you won’t have much for combat. There’s a lot of great combat spells that Warlocks get which you can grab instead of the spells I listed.
I sense fear - All the resilience and mobility in the world won’t save you from Power Word Kill. With a d8 hit die and no Constitution modifier you won’t have much more than 100 health on average.
But as day turns to night it’s your time to strike. Your role above all is to cause fear. Let your victims know that if you want them dead they won’t survive. Stalk them in every moment regardless of if they’re awake or asleep, and let them know that when the world goes dark their time is up. Just be wary of anyone who remembers to bring a flashlight: you don’t want to be blinded while chasing your prey.

AN: The one AU that binds, unites and links all fandoms. I’m not ashamed of this. Or that I’m listening to the Starkid soundtracks while I’m writing this. I hope you like it.
Hogwarts AU
Jaime could hear the wheezing threats of the ancient caretaker as he ran down the dimly lit corridor. Most of the candles had gone out and lighting his wand would give away his position. He had had the sense to cast a Muffling Charm on his feet so he could walk without making noise but he was yet to master the Disillusionment Charm which meant he had had to run when he rounded the corner and was spotted by old, wizened Mr Frey. Jaime hadn’t meant to stay out so late, he had been practicing in secret on the Quidditch pitch; training and strengthening his left hand. Everyone thought he would have left the Gryffindor Quidditch team after the accident that had resulted in the loss of his right hand, how could he catch and throw the Quaffle and keep control of his broom with only one hand? However Jaime had worked hard to earn his reputation as the best Quidditch player and he aimed to keep it.
“Place to hide, place to hide,” Jaime muttered to himself as he flung aside a tapestry, revealing a passage and a staircase. It took him out somewhere down around the dungeons. Not the ones by the Slytherin Common Room or the Potions department. He didn’t know where he was but he was certain he was far from Frey. Mentally planning his route back to Gryffindor Tower, Jaime rounded a corner and crashed into Brienne, sending both of them to the floor with a loud crash and yell.
“Jaime?! What the hell?!” Brienne demanded as Jaime shushed her. Brienne glared at him but the sound of running footsteps made them jump to their feet.
“I’ve got ya this time Lannister! I’ll hang you by your ankles!” Frey threatened as Brienne grabbed his arm and pulled Jaime towards a doorway.
“In here,” Brienne whispered, unlocking it with a muttered Alohomora. The pair rushed inside and Brienne silently shut the door again, pressing her ear against it to wait until it was quiet and the footsteps faded away. “What are you doing out so late?”
“Quidditch practice,” Jaime replied. “Why are you out of bed? You never break any rules.”
“I was covering Prefect Duty for Jorah, he’s in the Hospital Wing. Got a bad bite from a Venomous Tentacula in Herbology.” Brienne answered, her ear still pressed to the door. “I think he’s gone.”
“Give it a bit more time,” Jaime advised. “He always lurks when he thinks that he’s got you trapped.”
“You would know that,” Brienne retorted, brushing a speck of dust from the badger emblazoned on her robes. Jaime smiled to himself; Brienne was the literal embodiment of a Hufflepuff; honest, hardworking, determined and a loyal friend. They had become friends since an incident in their First Year involving a dare into the Forbidden Forest, the Acromantula that lived there and a Bat Bogey Hex. Brienne was the only one who knew that Jaime had chosen to be in Gryffindor. Almost all of his whole family had been in Slytherin, including his twin sister Cersei. Despite their family crest being a golden lion on a scarlet background; his family had always taught them that Gryffindors were arrogant, reckless idiots who were not worthy of their time. To Tywin, the only other acceptable house would be Ravenclaw; solely because Joanna had been a Ravenclaw in her time at Hogwarts. Jaime had seen it as a chance to be something more than his family name, to be his own person; more than Tywin’s son, Cersei’s twin, Tyrion’s brother. He wanted to just be Jaime, so that’s what he was.
Just Jaime.
“What can I say; we’re brave, daring and break all the rules.” Jaime quipped as he lit his wand. “I wonder why this room is locked.”
“I heard Tormund hid his three-headed dog somewhere in the school.” Brienne replied and Jaime laughed.
“Come on Brienne, if Tormund had a three headed dog, he’d be taking it everywhere with him.” Jaime said as he looked around the room. It looked like one of the several unused classrooms in the school; tables and chairs were pushed against the wall. There were boxes labelled with different and ancient potions equipment, outdated Defence Against The Dark Arts books, a shaking box labelled The Monster Book of Monsters. A twinkling out of the corner of his eye caught his attention and Jaime turned his wand towards the source.
A mirror was standing against the far wall. It was taller than both of them, it’s ornate and furnished golden frame seemed to be tarnished and faded with age. The frame was dusty but somehow, there glass was spotlessly clean. Across the arched curve at the top of the mirror was something written but neither of them could understand what it said.
“Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi,” Jaime read aloud, stumbling over the pronunciation of nonsense words. “Do you think it’s written in Old Valyrian or something?”
“I’m not sure,” Brienne replied; she got an eerie feeling from the mirror. It had to be a powerful or dangerous object to be hidden and locked away in a dungeon that no one had been in for a long time. There were enough day to day risks at Hogwarts without looking for more. “Jaime, we should go. We shouldn’t be here.”
“You let us in.” Jaime countered as he examined the words again but not finding any more sense from them. Instead he glanced at his reflection. Initially his reflection looked identical to his own. Until he spotted it. The only difference between his reflection and himself.
His reflection had two hands.
“Jaime?” Brienne prompted as Jaime stepped closer to the mirror. Another shape was appearing beside his reflected self. Tall, blonde with sapphire blue eyes and dressed in Hufflepuff robes. Brienne. He could see Brienne in the mirror.
“I see something.” Jaime said and Brienne shook her head. Jaime looked at the frame again, this time the first word caught his focus. Erised. A vague recollection of Tyrion mentioning a mirror named Erised stirred in his memory.
“Probably your reflection. It’s a mirror after all.” Brienne countered. “Jaime, we need to go.”
“Not yet,” Jaime argued as the Brienne in the mirror took his right hand in hers. His mirror self smiled at her and pulled her into his arms. His suspicion was correct. This was it. This was the mirror Tyrion had talked about. “It’s the Mirror of Erised!”
“The what?” Brienne asked, her rush to leave now compounded by her curiosity. She had never heard of such a thing before.
“The Mirror of Erised! A famous mirror! Legend has it that it shows the person who looks in it-“ Jaime trailed off as he looked into the mirror again. Mirror Jaime and Mirror Brienne were kissing and he felt his heart ache at the sight; a feeling of longing he had never felt before.
“Shows them what?” Brienne prompted, now curious about what Jaime could see in the mirror to have him looking so captivated and unable to look away.
“It, it shows them what they want most in the world. Their heart’s desire.” Jaime finished, a slight blush creeping across his cheeks as he looked at the smile on his reflection’s face. He looked so happy, so carefree, so, so in love!
“Erised, it’s ‘desire’ spelled backwards.” Brienne realised, stepping forward and studying the text. “It’s all written backwards and the spacing of the letters are wrong.”
Jaime held up his wand and together they read what the mirror’s message really said. “I show not your face but your hearts desire.”
For a few moments they stood in silence, basking in the moment of having discovering a rare and powerful magical object. It was the sound of a distant door slamming that brought them back to reality. How long they had been in the room, they didn’t know. But it was time to go.
“Let’s go!” Brienne said as she walked over and took Jaime’s arm, tugging him away from the mirror. As she did, Brienne looked in the mirror and saw Jaime’s expression looking back at her. He was wearing a cheeky grin and his emerald eyes were glinting with happiness. Yet when she turned her head to check, Jaime was now looking at the floor, rubbing his eyes with his left hand. Why did she see him in the mirror, not herself? What did that say about her heart’s desire? What was Jaime’s? What had captivated him so?
“That mirror is incredible.” Jaime said as they left the dungeon, locking the door behind themselves.
“I don’t think so, powerful yes. But I don’t think we should go to it again.” Brienne advised, leading him down the corridor, eyes and ears strained for any sound or sign of Frey.
“But-“ Jaime protested before Brienne tightened her grip on his hand. She was still holding his hand. Jaime squeezed it back and missed it’s warmth as she let go.
“There’s something weird about that mirror. I think it’s been locked away for a reason. We can’t go back there. Promise me Jaime,” Brienne said as they walked back towards the Entrance Hall.
“I promise,” Jaime replied. He would keep that promise, he wouldn’t go looking for the Mirror again. Part of Tyrion’s story about the Mirror of Erised spoke of how many powerful wizards and witches had faded away in front of the mirror; so caught up in the dreams and longing for their heart’s desire that they forgot the world they lived in. As Jaime watched Brienne disappear towards the Hufflepuff dormitories; he felt a renewed sense of determination as he made his way back to Gryffindor Tower.
He had promised that he wouldn’t go to see the mirror again.
But he hadn’t promised that he wouldn’t try to make what he had seen a reality.

Production Design - Set Decor Article
Tumblr media
I looked at the article on WandaVision, written by Gene Cane and Karen Burg for Set Decor. https://www.setdecorators.org/?art=television_decor_features&SHOW=SetDecor_features_WANDAVISION
When WandaVision was first released this time last year, it was one of the first pieces of MCU content Marvel had released after the start of the pandemic. It gained a lot of hype and I was part of that. I loved this show, mainly for the deeply personal story of the grief Wanda experienced post-End Game. This article is an insight into the set designer, Kathy Orlando, and her process of creating the different eras shown in WandaVision.
Tumblr media
Her thought-process when she first started was to relate the set design to Wanda.
“I tried to channel Wanda. She did this whole thing in 9 days, imagining from her memory what these sitcoms were like. So, I feel like our sets were a little bit like that. Imaginings, not verbatim copies of the sitcom sets.”
I think Orlando was spot on with this. By approaching each set as if from Wand’d memories, we can relate more to her as a character. The majority of episodes start with an opening theme that is a parody of a classic sitcom from that era. From the on-set, we, as viewers, expect a certain set based off that sitcom. SO, when we are met with something that’s similar, yet slightly different to what we expect - we feel uneasy. It doesn’t feel fully right. I feel this adds to the Trueman Show-ness of the show. This is enhanced when we are brought out of Wanda’s sitcom fantasy into the real world. The contrast of the “Hex” (where Wanda has created her fantasy) and the outer world really shows how much pain Wanda is in. When Orlando says “imagining from her memory,” I can see she has a great understanding of Wanda as a character. Sitcoms are something which is tied to the good memories Wanda has. From her painful childhood, to her period being experimented on, her times with the Avengers - sitcoms are shown to be something always there for Wanda, something she can always escape to. By fully immersing herself in the eras of her favourite sitcoms, she is feels safe and is able to escape the reality of Vision’s death. As viewers, we experience this with her through the set design. We feel nostalgia for the eras, and when we are brought out of it, its extremely jarring. We like experiencing the fantasy world, as we get to see our usual superheroes experience everyday life. Yet, we have moments of unease, where the set doesn’t fully match our nostalgic memory of a sitcom; where Wanda or Vision are broken out of the fantasy.
Tumblr media
Orlando explains how the director was a child actor on sitcoms, often shooting on the Warner lots. They did the same for WandaVision, shooting most of the outside shots within the fantasy world on the Warner lots. Something I really like in the earlier episodes is how the outside of Wanda and Vision’s house has a painted background. This enhances the Trueman Show feeling of being in a fake reality. This painted background is introduced in the episode where lots of the side characters have started acting out, or breaking out of Wanda’s mind control. It’s also when Wanda is having her babies. The fantasy is becoming extreme, Wanda’s power limits are being stretched. As she begins labour, the set changes and glitches. Orlando described how she drew from other sitcoms from the 70s to change the set. By having objects change to something the complete opposite of the very chic house they are in, shows her fracturing mental state. This is the episode where it’s confirmed that Wanda is the one creating this new reality.
Tumblr media
Orlando Gives insight into how she organised the sets:
“We set up a warehouse that was almost like a prophouse. The first thing I did was basically fill a warehouse with vintage pieces, with individual aisles for each era. In my office, I had the eras divided up on my boards and you could really begin to see the differences.”
This is something I will definitely take on going forward in production design. Obviously not on the level of having a whole warehouse, but if I ever have various scenes or locations to design, I will use this method of organising. I think it makes it easier to see the bigger picture, as well as helps the team to stay organised and productive.
Orlando gives detail on specific eras, like the 1950s and 1970s, as well as the transition into modern times with the Sheild Base and Agatha’s underground lair.
Tumblr media
All in all, Orlando and her team achieved the difficult task of conveying several different eras. Without this amazing set design, I feel WandaVision would lose its charm and would feel lost as a show. The set design had to be perfect in order to connect with Wanda as a character.
After wrapping WandaVision, Orlando moved on to start working on Ms. Marvel, another MCU show, but with a very different vibe. It’s more centered around teenagers, so I can’t wait to see Orlando’s transition from WandaVision’s nostalgia for the past, to this new show’s high-modernity.
Stills
For this part of the homework, we had to take 8-10 black and white stills that contributed to the sense of ‘Home’. I decided to go for a very personal idea of home. It’s something I’ve never really felt like I’ve had. It always been a place filled with illness, trauma, and a contant feeling of unease. I wanted to show that version of home in my photos. Here they are:

Tazed
So a Long time ago i sent in an Innocent piece of Fan art to a web site: Taralynn’s Desk and in the process ended up making a friend I’ve had for closing in on a decade.  From that Me and Tara Really struck up our friendship and worked together on developing a world and a group of super hero characters. Now nothing really came of this comic we were creating, got about 10 strips in and real life got in the way but i always thought these were great characters and this was a great setting.
So Recently i have my dearest of friend @lothwolf-run redesign and re imagine these character looks because i might try and write them again. So here are the Characters of Tazed and a Back’s synopsis of them each.
Tazed is a commercial Hero group that was formed to deal with the rising meta-types in the world. they are a mixture of Older more experenced heroes, and younger new one. On their first mission a magical accedent happened and left the younger half of the team transformed.
Now the Idea for the team, was a sponsored team; either corporately or by the government at first to be heroes. the heroes and team are marketed for popularity and much like other things of this sort would promote brands sfor their operating costs.
Tumblr media
Backlash
Real Name: Zephan “Zee” Two-Feather
Powers: Energy absorption/Self Attribute Bolstering.
Zee is the Field Commander of Tazed, Perhaps also the one most suited to a combat group traveled a lot young and enlisted in the army becoming a Ranger and learning advanced combat Techniques.
His background is that his parents were killed in a car Accident. He and his sister were taken in by the Reservation's Shaman, and was what’s called an Angry Child.  He knows Elizabeth and Midori pre-Tazed and had been broken up with Midori for a little over a year when approached to come and work for Tazed.
In the original incarnation a joke would be inserted here that when presented with his costume that he had those tassels that seemed to be a stable in the 90′s for any native american character. Zee is closer to a cowboy anyway playing guitar and and spending his off time in a dive bar drinking. He’s a bit of a brawler also.
Zee was a character i had previously made for a Heroes Home brew game i was playing with Scaled back a lot for this setting i got to keep a lot of his back ground traits.  Looking back on it now i can see why Tara thought he was overpower to start. The original Game concept of him put him on par to fight Syler and Peter Patrelli.
Not much of a redesign just streamlining the original picture
Tumblr media
Hex
Real name: Elizabeth Wellington
Powers: Advanced Magic
Elizabeth is the youngster of the older set but from a rich english family. She is an accomplished magic user and draws her powers from the celtic goddess the Morrigan. she is the exact opposite of Zee, patient an pragmatic, sensible and rational until her powers really get going.
She is the Team leader outside of combat and is one of the funders of Tazed with her family’s fortune.
while Megumi is her best friend, she’s harbored a secret crush for Zee for a while. It’s definitely a case where opposites attach as the two are constantly in disagreement as to how to go forward
In the early days of development Hex was the biggest cause of contention for the Same reason as Zee. I felt she was over powered. We butted heads on her role in the over all story line and that dictated her level of power. I was never happy with my original Design for her so Lothrun helped me out majorly where she picked up the connection to the Morrigan, got back a bunch of her power and even has a long lost half sister.
Tumblr media
Seer
Real Name: Midori Inoue
Powers: Telepathy, Empathy, limited mental effects she can project.
The third of all the “adults” She is the balance between Zee and Liz. she is practical but not stuck up, Fun loving but not impulsive. A skilled melee and unarmed fighter her mental powers allows her to be the perfect Stealth Solider. She can with her telepathy listen to thoughts, feel emotions but also create blind spots in peoples minds to her presence for short periods of time.
She and Zee never reveal why the broke up but it was messy. It’s not suppose to come up in story mostly because i never figured out what happened and Tara said we could skip it and come back to it.
If I’m honest she was the least developed of all the group, but I've always liked her concept. A telepath that’s not Jean grey/Emma frost levels of ZOMG but using it for practical implantation.
Seer was another one i could never figure out so the redesign tickles me pink as she looks so good.
Tumblr media
Radiance
Real name: Aurora Lightheart (Formally Aaron Lightfoot)
Powers Light control/Manipulation
Ah Radiance, so on the first mission there was an accent that gender flipped all the “kids”.
Radiance, Formally Beacon, was a aspiring hero that was laid back but always did the right thing. Pre change she was classified has having all the potential in the world if she could just apply himself. His powers could do some limited illusion work as well as lasers for range and distracting lights to blind her opponents. After the Accident she threw herself into the job and became one of the more recognizable figures n the team.
She probably was the most well adjusted to her transformation taking on this Girl next door aura. It was implied That she would one day be the leader of the team as she seemed to be the most level headed of the “kids”
Radiance was Tara’s baby. the one none negotiable character and i understood why.  I always liked her as a character this care free and she proved stark contract to the other three kids as her transformation doesn’t seem to bother her for long as she adapts well.
Not much of a redesign here just really taking the existing material and modernizing it a bit more. Radiance’s picture remains Tara’s favorite among the set.
Tumblr media
Amp
Real Name: Marina Diaz (formally Marcus Davis)
Power: Lightning creation/Control/Manipulation limited speed bursts.
Amp was the first character i made on my own for this project. He was a boy from a military family that ended up developing lightning powers. Under the name Surge he became a hero and was eventually selected to join Tazed.
After the accident she ended up taking more traits of her latin-american mother and became the focus of Tazed Marketing department with her multi cultural appeal and sex appeal.
now this was admittedly going to lead to some pretty dark places and be the catalyst for a story line well down the line. I enjoy the Redeisgn so much because it doesn’t change much but still looks fresh and much better then my original Psyloche type design.
Tumblr media
Piledriver
real Name: Micheal Lindon (Lanna Michealson)
Powers, Enhanced strength and invulnerability when Aura is turned on.
Here is the second least developed of the group, before she was Lanna Michealson who could summon an aura for make her stronger and nigh-invulnerable. She and Radiance hit it off pre-accident and that continued post accident.
going from a petite girl to a large beefy dude was like whiplash for Her as suddenly she was given more responsibility and was looked upon more to take a leadership role over the group. things he secretly loved.
In truth Rad is able to stay so grounded after the change because of PD and them supporting each other. this was another on eon the “always hated the original design” Lothwolf proved simpler is better her.
Tumblr media
Raze
Real name: Nadia Taranova (Nikoli Taranov)
Powers: concussive blasts, limited earth control
Raze was a villain when the accident happened, getting caught in the magic back blast with the others, she was captured and brought back to Tazed and given a choice. join Tazed and avoid jail time or go to super max for a very very long time.
What’s worse her Russian accent really came thru after the change. She stuck in this weird spot where no one really trusts her but she can’t go anywhere because she’s technically in custody. In the early days no one gave her a chance save Midori. Obviously the others her age blamed her for their change and Zee and Liz were always suspicious of her being a villian.
She also had an intense rivalry with Amp is memory serves.
I love the redesign so much here because it’s a better use of the colors. There is also a plot thread she’s half brother to Lanna. but we go back and forth on it. She would also be the one to catch the shady stuff that would have happened with Amp.
And that’s it. the first project Taralynn and i ever had and these collection done to celebrate that. Lothrun-wolf did such a wonderful job on all these i can’t talk enough about them.
So a secondary reason for this also is because i might try to write their stories or draw them a little here and there. I hope you all enjoyed them.

Your Harry Potter au is wonderful and I love it to pieces :D Do you have any ideas for Wendy?
@raioseucliffe-cheney replied to your post “Yet another HP FT AU”
sounds interesting. what about sting and Rogue?
OK so I hope y’all are ready for this. I maaaaaay have expanded on a few others lmao but I just get obsessed with things lmao
Wendy:
she is a Hufflepuff with Natsu. He acts like her big brother bcus her mom was part of the team with Igneel, and he grew up with her as kids. She’s two years below them
side note: overall ages are that Laxus is four years Natsu’s senior, Erza, Cana, and Mira are a year above Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Levy, and Gajeel all are in the same year as Natsu, Sting and Rouge are a year below, and Wendy and Chelia are two years below.
Her favourite classes are Potions and Transfiguration, her least favourite is Defence Against the Dark Arts
Wendy excels in potions and takes after her aunt and the Potions prof, Porlyuscia, who is her mother’s twin.
If anything bad happens to Wendy, read; making her cry, the student ‘somehow’ finds their potion going wrong.
No one can prove it, so Makarov can’t do anything about it
Why would anyone pick on Wendy anyway like??? how heartless can you be?
Best friends with Chelia and may or may not have a crush on her Slytherin best friend.
She 100% has a crush on her Slytherin best friend.
Gets adopted into Natsu’s friend group bcus of how advanced she is due to Porly’s homeschooling and natural talent.
Has 0 prejudice about the houses bcus Grandeeny was a Gryffindor, Porlyuscia is a Slytherin, and she views Lucy as a big sister.
tbh she doesn’t really get the house separations, but she will get decked out in 100% yellow and black for quidditch. Both she and Chelia eventually try out for their respective teams and both get the Seeker position. They become known as ‘The sky sisters’ bcus of how far above the court they chase the damn thing when playing against one another. They are unstoppable on their brooms like
damn
Her pet is a white fluffy cat that Natsu enchants to shapeshift like Happy. Bcus he’s had a few years to practice magic he is better and Charla is able to shift into a human for brief periods of time.
The Hufflepuff headboy/girl is on the verge of a nervous breakdown goddamit Natsu stop inventing spells?? It’s not okay we don’t need a girl with CAT EARS sitting in the common AREA WHERE ANYONE CAN SEE HER. WHAT IF THE MAGIC COUNCIL FINDS OUT? Also the elves are complaining that Happy is stealing fish again I stg if I heard a bang come from your dorm jsut now I wi ll
idk who has that hell job yet but pity them.
Pity. Them.
Wendy does
Gajeel (bcus why not):
transferred from Drumstang with Juvia, grew up like a cousin to Natsu but went to his father’s country’s school after Metalicana went missing. He was an outcast bcus Metalicana had gone to Hogwarts, so Gajeel had to act extra tough to make up for it.
He’s put into Gryff and just shrugs and moves along. Everyone else is beyond surprised that this tall, muscular, pierced boy was sorted into the ‘good’ house.
He takes another year or two to settle into his house, but he’s kind to the elves and animals, even if he might sneer at anyone who tries to sit with him for the first few months
Levy does not care, determined to overcome her nasty experience with a group of Drumstang wizards and witches from her past.
He gets attached to this little Ravenclaw who will talk his ear off or sit quietly with him for seven hours straight researching data for a one line reference.
She is the only reason he doesn’t fail his first year there.
Lucy coughs loudly in the background, as she also helped him with his studies, but wey
Gajeel’s favourite class is also Magical Beasts but the animals either love or fear him. Never respect lmao.
He’s best at Defence Against the Dak Arts like Natsu, but his least favourite is Astronomy. He just doesn’t care about fate, or whatever. It can go fuck itself. He especially hates Proff Aquarius.
Ten points from Gryffindor for language, Mr. Redfox
And now it’s twenty. Care to add anything else?
WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU LITTLE P U N K
His pet is a cat that he himself enchanted to shapeshift. Lily can hold his humanish form for hours.
Gajeel is Proud
Likes hiding in his room but somehow Natsu always finds him and drags him along into some absurd prank war? He’d never admit it but he likes being surrounded by all the chatter and he has a soft spot for Lucy, who he dubs ‘Bunny girl’ due to a misfired hex from Natsu that gave Lucy bunny ears and a tail for a week.
She is also his confidant when it comes to a certain blue haired Ravenclaw. If he ever thought Lucy was too sweet and innocent for Natsu, that idea was thrown right out the window when she offered to hunt down the room of requirement, hex it open, and shove Levy and Gajeel in it alone together.
He may also be slightly terrified of Lucy, more than Erza even
Rouge and Sting:
Look up to Gajeel and Natsu respectively
Both went to Beauxbaunt but transferred for their third year (the year after Gajeel and Juvia) to Hogwarts. Were placed in the Ravenclaw for Rouge and Gryffindor for Sting.
Both boys were upset to be in different houses than their Heros, but at least their year the two houses were in classes together.
Follow Natsu’s influence and become the school mischief makers. Bcus they’re found with one another so often and can understand what the other is thinking people call them twins, and because of how opposite they look the term stuck ironically
Both have cats and tried to do Natsu’s enchantment, but were only able to produce wings and the ability to talk.
Frosh wanted to be a frog very badly though, and so Rouge made them a frog suit and has been working extremely hard in Transfiguration to find a spell that can grant their wish.
Sting’s best subject is DADA and worst is Muggle history.
He has a bit of an elitist streak and thinks bcus of his pureblood lines that he’s more adept at magic naturally. Is unaware of his own prejudice until Lucy all but screams at him and accidentally reveals that Gajeel’s mother was a muggle.
His adopted father (head of Sabertooth) is very racist and will use ‘mudblood’ as a slur constantly. He runs away with Rouge and stays at Hogwarts permanently at age 14.
Rouge’s best subjects are Transfigurations and worst is the Singing class he has to take for an art elective.
The boy sounds like a dying whale
But he can’t join the frog choir or Frosh will cry bcus they are not a frog
Rouge would rather fail a class than make Frosh cry
Struggles with self-esteem issues and will trail in Sting’s shadow.
Doesn’t know his mother and was adopted alongside Sting after the accident with their dragon expert fathers, but he does know he isn’t pureblood. He overheard his adopted father speaking about how much of a disgrace Rouge was and the ‘contamintion’ inside him.
Never told Sting for fear of being abandoned (even tho Sting would never and it would have fixed his views on bloodlines long before Hogwarts)
It was his idea to run away after seeing how accepting and loving Hogwarts is their first year there.
They share their first kiss in fourth year a The Three Broomsticks during Christmas
Sting says it was very gay and he loved it

with his hands up in front of him "I did not do anything wrong! " he says angrily holding a knife in both hands "You are guilty! You have violated my privacy and I am going to punish you! "What? Zana get off me! body need it? The human body is close to breaking down from haydigence to a incorruptable body You arrived at the meat farm on the back of a cart pulled by some of the drivers from the transit center In order to this the currency exchange must be debugged or astryl does not now what this stuff does to a incorruptable body in there If astryl checks his rectum he finds some aluminum alligator skutes with which to spend as money in there 's life here on bardou Where else could bardo be if not someplace like this? Cludstrum will narrate the going ons of astryl wylde's life here on bardou that contain some amount of metal in them In order to debug parts of the screens astyrl need to eat things that contain some amount of metal in them like a bull doing Between the gaps of the transportation common carrier station there is a meat farm something These things provide cludstrum with the neccassary bits to fix the systems that astryl burst through his sins like a bull doing 's person You can see the packed dirt road that is mostly barren except for a few haggard looking trees and low green plants along side of it So one of the first mirrors that cludstrum gets online is the mirror that shows a list of edible items in the vicinity of astryl's person in excess and it will have no adverse affects on his health Astyrl is immortal so he can eat pretty much anything in excess and it will have no adverse affects on his health a word that to most people just means eating However eating any kind of organic material without dying is know as oophagy The pratice is known as oophagy, into his mouth with frightening regularity This must be the future! He pulls colors out of the things he imbies into his mouth with frightening regularity during his sin All of these new symbols that appeare are the art that is changing the way we think! Cludstrum uses these colors to fix the systems of astryl that have broken down during his sin The cart pulls up to a fence post that has flat pieces of something hung from it But right now he is in a desert so there is not that much to eat here fruit growing on some of the plants near the road One thing cludstrum likes to do is use mirrors for sight seeing He can find some cactus fruit growing on some of the plants near the road as his insides come into contact with the poison, but when he eats enough he gets a rush of euphoria followed by an extended, painful death Eating the thorns will put him in a worse and worse mood as his insides come into contact with the poison, This method of eating solid food has lead to problems from time to time and he is hungry so he attempts to grab it Everything in bardou wants to get away from astryl There is even a black snake with no eyes but he must be really quick to capture it and he is hungry so he attempts to grab it So yeah this first part is astryl wondering in the desert and eating stuff until he dies Up next is the meat farm! xplore next and report on the doings on Part three, operation meat farm! xplore next and report on the doings on there a run down meat farm There is an old wooden gate to begin with Another place to explore in the desert is a run down meat farm a wooden lodge with parking lots around it A scary place to explore in the desert is a wooden lodge with parking lots around it yard with trees around it There are mountains near the meat farm to explore The gate is locked up tight when astryl arrives A freindly place to explore in the desert is yard with trees around it in the distance he hears the kitchen doors open and a few smiling humans wander out into the yard, locking the gate behind them "We have arrived! A CSS Golfing Exercise
Code golfing is a type of programming where the goal is to accomplish a task using as few bytes as possible. CSSBattle is a code golfing battleground where players complete to recreate target images using CSS and HTML.
The rules are fairly simple:
No external resources (sorry, no <img src="the-solution.png">)
Your solution must render correctly in Chrome (just for scoring purposes)
This can be a pretty fun departure from day-to-day front-end work. There’s no need to worry about maintainability, semantics, performance, accessibility, or anything other than making a thing really, really small and still render correctly.
A golf solution in 12 attempts
This type of thinking is a pretty dramatic departure from how most of us are writing front-end code for production sites (I hope!), so I’ve been posting all of my solutions on GitHub in an effort to both share some knowledge and learn from others. As a fortunate side effect, it also means there’s a fairly detailed history of my submissions.
Here’s a start-to-finish account of my attempts CSSBattle’s 7th target, which looks like this:
CSSBattle Target #7 — Leafy Trail
The "just center the dang thing" method
A reasonable first approach is to simply stick an element in the middle of the page, slap a box shadow and a border radius on it, and call it done. If we were writing this "for real," it might look like this:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <style> body { background: #0B2429; margin: 0; } .leaf { width: 150px; height: 150px; border-radius: 67% 0; background: #F3AC3C; margin: 75px 0 75px 175px; box-shadow: -50px 0 #998235, -100px 0 #1A4341 } </style> </head> <body> <div class="leaf"/> </body> </html>
But that’s 423 bytes! That won’t do for CSS golf, so let’s see what we can remove.
Attempt 1: 144 bytes
<p style="margin:75 167;height:150;width:150;border-radius:67%0;box-shadow:-50px 0#998235,-100px 0#1A4341,0 0 0 5in #0B2429;background:#F3AC3C">
Here’s a golfed version. There’s definitely some weirdness going on here — no <!DOCTYPE>, no <html>, no <body>, no nothin’. The browser doesn’t need them (and, in fact, inserts them for us), so we save a lot of bytes by leaving them out. We’re using <p> instead of <div> since it’s shorter, and we don’t close the tag at all since it’s not required for things to render.
The CSS itself isn’t much different, aside from the fact that we’ve used a huge box shadow instead of a background on the body element ("background" is long so avoiding it can be beneficial). It’s also inlined in the element since a <style></style> tag costs extra bytes.
You may have noticed that we used 5in for the spread in our last box shadow. Playing with weird units is a huge part of CSS golfing. In this case, we just need the shadow to cover the 400x300 canvas and ‘5in' (480px) is shorter than any pixel value.
Attempt 2: 141 bytes
<p style=margin:75+167;height:150;width:150;border-radius:67%0;box-shadow:-50px+0#998235,-100px+0#1A4341,0+0+0+5in#0B2429;background:#F3AC3C>
This introduces a pretty important golfing trick: replacing spaces with plus signs allows us to remove the quotes around attributes, saving a couple bytes. I’m not totally sure why this works. Someone suggested it may be related to this part of the HTML spec. If you have a better answer, please let me know!
This attempt also cleans up a couple of whitespace mistakes from the last attempt.
Attempt 3: 126 bytes
<body bgcolor=F3AC3C style=margin:75+75+75+175;border-radius:67%+0;box-shadow:-50px+0#998235,-100px+0#1A4341,0+0+0+5in#0B2429>
Using a <body> tag instead of a <p> means that:
We no longer spend bytes setting height or width on a paragraph
We get access to bgcolor
bgcolor is a deprecated attribute that comes up often in CSS golf solutions. It only works on a few tags (<body> included), and does two great things:
Saves us from spending bytes on "background:"
Saves us a byte by allowing us to omit # in hex colors. Additionally, if a color ends in one or two zeros, we can remove them and it will still render correctly. For example, FFFF00 is the same as FFFF.
There’s a golf regression in this iteration! Can you spot it?
The "border" method
By this point, I had spent quite a few hours tinkering on and off with this target and was getting pretty stuck. Fortunately, CSSBattle has a friendly community on Spectrum that is more than willing to lend a hand.
At the time, Praveen held the #1 spot with two bytes fewer than I had managed, so I asked for some help. He suggested leveraging both the <body> and <html> elements to position everything while using borders in place of a background color.
Attempt 4: 126 bytes
<style>*{border-radius:67%+0;border:75px solid#F3AC3C;margin:0 50;box-shadow:-50px 0#998235,-100px 0#1A4341,0 0 0 5in#0B2429
This is a pretty huge departure from our last strategy. Our body tag is gone and we’re using <style>*{ to target the <html> and <body> tags that the browser inserts for us. The combination of margin and border nudges our shape exactly where it needs to be, and the box-shadow on <body> covers all the excess stuff you’d see from styling on <html>.
This was tough for me to grok, but Praveen made a diagram that explains things pretty well. Here’s a prettied up version:
Margins and borders on <html> and <body>
a and b are the margin and border on <html>, and c is the margin on <body>. The right margin on <body> doesn’t do anything since there’s no room to push the <body> to the left and it already has zero width.
Once our box shadows are applied, b is covered up and all that’s left is our target image.
There are still some optimizations missing here though. Dorus van den Oord was able to take the border method down to a lean 121 bytes, offering this cryptic bit of advice:
small hint for getting to that 121: What if you could move an element by a quarter of a ...?
Attempts 5 and 6: 122 bytes
<style>*{border-radius:67%+0;border:75px solid#F3AC3C;margin:0 50;box-shadow:-53q 0#998235,-25vw 0#1A4341,0 0 0 5in#0B2429
Turns out all we needed was a unit hardly anyone’s ever heard of (q) (and the humble vw). Having to write "px" is rarely correct in CSS golf, so it’s something to be on the lookout for. Here, we can replace 100px with 25vw and 50px with 53q.
A q, or quarter-millimeter, is exactly that — 1/4th of a millimeter, or just under a pixel. The q unit is a staple of CSS golf as one of two values (the other being %) that require just one byte to express. I’ve combined my 5th and 6th attempts here since both were just unit tweaks. We’re still a byte off from 121 though!
Attempt 7: 121 bytes
<style>*{border-radius:67%0;border:75px solid#F3AC3C;margin:0 50;box-shadow:-53q 0#998235,-25vw 0#1A4341,0 0 0 5in#0B2429
We finally fixed that regression from the third attempt, thanks to a pull request from Praveen. A percentage doesn’t need a space between it and subsequent values, so we can save a byte in our border-radius. This is a great example of how sharing code can help everyone involved. I had been stuck on this for a pretty dang long time.
The "funky margin" method
Borders aren’t the only approach, though! Enter Rasmus Fløe’s funky margin:
I got 123 chars on #7 by using box-shadow and a funky margin:75 400 75-150 :)
Attempt 8: 120 bytes
<body bgcolor=0B2429 style=border-radius:67%0;margin:75+400+75-150;box-shadow:86mm+0#F3AC3C,73mm+0#998235,75vh+0#1A4341>
Here’s how this works, as Rasmus explains it:
positive right margin pushes it off canvas to the left — and negative left margin stretches the element to the wanted width :)
Here it is drawn out:
The Rasmus Fløe "funky margin" method
The right margin (b) pushes the <body> element all the way to the left, collapsing it to zero width. The negative left margin (a) then stretches it back to 150px wide (the width of the leaf shape), and then our box shadow (c) is offset enough to be in view. This is awesome because we no longer have to deal with negative box shadows in order to get everything to layer correctly.
We’re also back to bgcolor and get to leverage a nice quirk of background colors: because <html> doesn’t have its own background color, it inherits one from <body>.
Attempts 9 and 10: 118 bytes
<body bgcolor=0B2429 style=border-radius:67%0;margin:75+340+75-90;box-shadow:7cm+0#F3AC3C,57mm+0#998235,55vh+0#1A4341>
With a bit more unit-wrangling we’re able to save ourselves two more bytes (props to Dorus, who was the first to discover this optimization). Adjusting the margins saves a digit (150 becomes 90), and, as a sweet bonus, we get to convert 86mm to 70mm, which becomes 7cm. I’ve again combined two attempts here which were minor unit fixes. (I’m embarrassed to say I initially missed the mm-cm conversion.)
Attempt 11: 117 bytes
<body bgcolor=0B2429 style=border-radius:67%0;margin:75+85%75-90;box-shadow:7cm+0#F3AC3C,57mm+0#998235,55vh+0#1A4341>
Romain Deltour was the first to find this 117-byte solution. Changing 340 to 85% means we get to omit a space after one of our values (just like we did with border-radius), saving another byte.
Attempt 12: 115 bytes
<body bgcolor=0B2429 style=border-radius:67%0;margin:75+85%75-90;box-shadow:7cm+0#F3AC3C,57mm+0#998235,55vh+0#7fd2>
Two full weeks after Romain’s 117-byte solution, Viacheslav Popov was able to alpha composite his way to 115 bytes via 4-digit hex codes.
I really love this because — not only is it dang clever — but a lot of people (myself included) thought the target had already been fully optimized. Viacheslav’s persistence both sparked a new round of discussion and added another CSS-Trick™ to our arsenal for future targets.
Attempt 13:
This seems awfully close to optimal to me but that certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be beat — why not give it a shot? There's prior art to get you started, plenty of folks willing to help, and even some tooling. Happy golfing ⛳️

This seems awfully close to optimal to me but that certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be beat — why not give it a shot? There's prior art to get you started, plenty of folks willing to help, and even some tooling. Happy golfing ⛳️

Strong, Innovative Open-Frame Design Strong yet lightweight, the Suspension Multi-Plier offers the durability of stainless steel construction along with an aluminum butterfly-opening handle that’s inspired by the precision engineering of Portland, Oregon’s famous suspension bridges. Like those time-tested iron bridges, this tool is designed to deliver the down-and-dirty performance that you demand from your tools.
But performance isn’t everything. The tool’s unique suspension-style handle sits comfortably in your hand, giving it a well-balanced feel. Compact enough to satisfy the most demanding minimalists, and cool enough for any gadget guy or girl, the Suspension Multi-Plier offers a sleek, streamlined design that will look as good as it performs.
Reliable, Easy-to-Access Tools Keep You Prepared Whether you’re at home, on the road, at a muddy jobsite, or deep in the backcountry, you can’t predict what you’ll be up against. The Suspension Multi-Plier is fitted with 11 tools that will give you the edge in virtually any situation.
Starting with the knives, you have the choice of a straight blade for fine-tune cutting, or a serrated blade that’s great for cutting rope.
This tool also includes a Phillips screwdriver along with large and medium flathead screwdrivers, as well as a dedicated wire cutter/stripper. Unlike bulky squared-off pliers on many multitools, the needle-nose pliers at the center of this tool are designed for the tightest of spots. And they’re spring loaded so that they open when you release your grip, which makes working with them easy, pinch free and intuitive.
Other useful features hidden away in the handle of the Suspension include scissors, a bottle opener, a can opener, saw, an awl, and a lanyard ring.
Safe, User-Friendly Design If you’ve ever had a folding knife close on your hand in the middle of making a tough cut, you’ll have a special appreciation for Gerber’s Saf.T.Plus system, which locks components securely in place for worry-free use.
Even with this lock system, deployment is quick and easy. Gerber’s user-friendly design makes it simple to access any tool that you need–just slide the lock-release button back and get set for the task at hand.
This Gerber multitool also comes with a nylon ballistic-cloth sheath so that you can keep it protected from the elements when it’s not in use.
If you’re looking for even more versatility, Gerber offers an add-on tool kit that contains an adapter, three different sizes of flathead bits, cross point bits, and hex head bits for increased functionality. Also available are several a convenient sharpening systems that can help you keep the blades on your multitool in top condition without the hassle of using a whetstone or a round file, including the DF6 Compact Sharpener and the DF8 Sharpener, which uses unique diamond fingers to acheive a perfect 30 degree angle every time you sharpen a blade (tool kit and sharpeners not included).

Gerber’s History of Ingenuity Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber’s emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon’s Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance.
