Watching The Owl House in Dutch (part 5)

Season 2b:

"Luz is kapot" - this is why I love the Dutch language!

Is Luz gonna say "zoet aardappel" from now on? For some reason it doesn't roll off the tongue as good as sweet potato.

"The best and the brightest" that Hunter seeks becomes "creme de la creme" in the Dutch dub

Darius sounds good. The voice fits really well with the character.

"You" can be both singular and plural in English, so when translating, they have to adapt things. In "Reaching Out", Amity says "I don't want to talk to you - either of you". In Dutch, it has to be " ... jij - en jij ook" (you - and you too).

The cloaked figures in ep 16 are supposed to be mysterious, but when Raine writes in English on the ground, they have to read it out loud in Dutch, making their identity less secret.

Hunter's VA is playing it really good with the panic in "Hollow Mind".

How do they translate the old-fashioned English phrases? Do they just use older Dutch language? "O Titan, Where Art Thou" Is translated as "O, Titan, waar zijt u", where "zijt" seems to be old-fashioned or dialectal.

Whenever the breathing exercise comes in "Labyrinth Runners", I always do it too, even in Dutch.

Another thing with Gus' voice: in the flashback, his voice is high.

King Anti-Troen Strijders! Once again a really good name that becomes a good acronyme.

"Who are these people" becomes "wie bent deze mensen", but "mensen" also means "humans", and "these people" at the end of "O Titan, Where Art Thou" are certainly not humans.

Interesting how King talks to the Collector. First using the formal "Meneer" and "U", and then realizing that he needs to use informal speech.

I started At a Distance, Spring is Green because Park Ji Hoon was so good in Weak Hero and I was curious to see him in something else. He's playing a completely different character here, all smiley and flirty, but is also excellent.

I'm liking the show much more than I expected, it's... the characters so far are a lot more nuanced and uniquely human than I anticipated. It's still tropey, but more subtly done than usual, and it feels like the characters/actors undercut it somehow.

I am yet again voting for the polyamory option (Park Ji Hoon's character has two hands! And a bottomless need to be loved) but we're of course not going to get that. And they really are depicting a Romance arc between the two leading men, even if they'll never let the relationship actually be queer. But I'm actually coming around to (what I assume is going to inevitably become) the heterosexual romance, because the story is approaching it in a rather interesting way.

It has some interesting thematic overlaps with Weak Hero as well, handled very differently.

Also the actor who played my sunshine boy Dang Gu from Alchemy of Souls is in it. He plays a minor douchebag, but it's hard to hate him because he will always be my sunshine boy.

I absolutely loved this exhibition about the Efteling and I can't believe that I forgot to post more photos. All the beautiful sketches and objects were there.

The little dress is from one of the dancing stars from the Indische waterlelies, next to it a sketch from one of the garbage signs, the skull and head which belonged in spookslot with the oosterse geest and a sketch of one of the herauten by the magische klok.

Watching The Owl House in Dutch (part 3)

The end of season 1:

Interesting how they deal with English texts that appear on screen, like Gus' illusion messages in ep 13, where a random voice just reads them from nowhere; and Luz texting her mom in ep 16, where the VA:s read the texts as they appear. In some occasions, they obviously don't need to bother with it.

"Grala" is a fun word! I love the sound the G makes in Dutch (also how they pronounce Gus)

Many good quotes in ep 17, like Amitys gay panic moment "oh wow, sterk". Instead of the original "sports" moment, Amity notices how strong her crush is. (and she really likes to be carried like that) Gus' line "Ik volg je niet" was also kinda funny (also, the sport is called bloedbal, like Blood Ball)

Luz usually uses the formal "U" when speaking to Eda. In ep 19 however, Luz says "Eda, ik hou van Je", where "je" is the informal version of "you". I might not know the nuances of formal speech in Dutch, but I find it very interesting.
