Star Trek: The Next Generation, 104 (Oct. 17, 1987) - "The Last Outpost"
Written by: Herbert Wright Directed by: Richard Colla
The Breakdown
The Enterprise crew are in pursuit of the mysterious never-before-seen Ferengi, when their ship suddenly powers down while orbiting an uncharted planet.  Initially Picard is given the impression that a Ferengi weapon is involved, when they receive a call from the Ferengi themselves admitting to having the same problem.  Ultimately it’s determined that the power drain is coming from the planet’s surface, so both ships send a landing party to investigate while everyone else is forced to wait in hope for a solution that doesn’t involve freezing to death.
Once on the Planet, the Ferengi immediately begin attacking with what appear to be whip-phasers (the default weapon of any strong capitalist society), and a fight ensues until it’s interrupted by some sort of all powerful deity-guardian (from a long extinct civilization. Pretty standard ancient space stuff) who decides to test which crew is more honourable-and-just.  Since the Ferengi are buffoonishly evil, Riker is able to make short work of the test, and the Guardian is pretty much like, “Sorry for the trouble with your ship, here’s your power back” before vanishing.  The end.
The Verdict
The first half of this episode mostly works at successfully building suspense over new unknown enemy. And then we finally meet the Ferengi and things get… unintentionally hilarious? Yes, I think that’s about as generous as I can be. By the time we meet this episode’s obligatory all-powerful space deity/guardian, the story has hit peak moral-lesson-of-the-week platitudes.
1.5 stars (out of 5)
Additional Observations
Picard dismissing old earth nationalistic values, and then immediately implying his ancestor’s flag was better than the American’s, seems a little off-brand for a starfleet captain.
Data getting caught in a Chinese finger trap is dumb. I know it’s being played for comedy, but it just falls flat. And Riker’s “let’s beam a box of these over to the Ferengi” gag at the end is equally dumb, and an obvious knock off of the ending from ‘The Trouble With Tribbles’.
Picard’s an asshole: While grappling with the reality of the entire crew freezing to death, Dr. Crusher considers the possibility of sedating Wesley to ease his inevitable suffering, to which Picard gives us us the gem: “He has the right to meet death awake.” …I mean, sure I guess he should be allowed to make that choice if he wants, but do do you think it might be worth asking him? Going out peacefully in my sleep seems alright to me, and it’s not like you can’t just wake him up if you all survive. Picard must REALLY hate that kid.
After watching episodes like this I can understand why so many people hate the Ferengi. Thankfully DS9 does a much better job with them.

raymond (Ben) , Catlin (Addison) , and Georgina (Janice) adre all in there 30s (r=35 c=33 g=37) and narissa (Jenn) is a little order at 40 years old and ernie (magic/Herbert) is the oldest at a wopping 77 years old. And mason (Ian) is the youngest at 28

Star Trek: The Next Generation, 108 (Nov. 14, 1987) - "The Battle"
Written by: Herbert J. Wright Directed by: Rob Bowman
The Breakdown
Picard gets a nasty headache while waiting several days to rendezvous with a Ferengi ship.  When they finally arrive, the Ferengi captain (Bok) explains that he has a gift for Picard in the form of his old Starship, the Stargazer. The Stargazer was badly damaged-and-ultimately-abandoned after a battle with an unknown attacker, who (we discover) were actually Ferengi.  Bok is like, “OMG! you’re THE Captain Picard who heroically blew up one of our ships.  That was so rad how you did that, and I just think you deserve to have your ship back for free.” So Picard accepts because he’s feeling nostalgic, and after all what’s the harm? It’s not like this is all part of an elaborate trap.
In a twist that may shock you, it turns out the whole ordeal is part an elaborate trap.  You see, as Picard’s headaches get worse, he also starts to have vivid flashback-hallucinations of the Stargazer battle.  We discover that Bok’s son was amongst those killed-in-action on the Ferengi ship, so Bok has planted a mind-control-hallucination-globe in Picard’s old room (which somehow specifically targets Picard, and has a far enough reach to affect him even when he’s on the Enterprise).  The whole plan revolves around getting Picard to hallucinate bad enough that he’s made to re-live his battle on the stargazer, and (in his delirious state) use the same lethal maneuvers against the Enterprise.  But it turns out Bok’s own crew don’t much care for this plan because revenge (in this instance) isn’t very profitable, and therefore deemed a waste of time.  So Bok’s first officer signals Riker about what’s going on, while Data comes up with a way to defeat Picard.  So I guess capitalism CAN be a force for good.
The Verdict
So how exactly do these mind globes work? How did the Ferengi target Picard exclusively? Can they target anyone? Why isn’t that weapon used more regularly? Are these questions ever answered in later episodes? I rather suspect not, but then you never do know what random threads the Trek shows will decide to follow up on; and to be fair that’s part of the fun. I guess the globes must have been another one of those top secret technological prototypes that apparently no one drew back-up schematics for. 23rd-24th century civilizations seem to do that a lot. *cough*DISCOVERY*cough*
Aside from that potentially glaring oversight, ‘The battle’ is still pretty entertaining, and gives us some more backstory on everyone’s favourite grumpy captain Picard. And full props to Patrick Stewart for committing to the scene where he’s hallucinating his old memories; as hokey as the script gets at times, his performance saves it.
2.5 stars (out of 5)
 Additional observations
Ah, Ferengi synth-soundtrack. Just one more layer that adds to what will surely make them iconic as TNG’s primary nemesis for all of time, and by no means be ultimately overshadowed by Space techno-zombies.
Wesley’s contribution could have easily been given to Data.
Speaking of Wesley his “you’re welcome ladies” (as as Troi and Crusher walk away) sounds less comically exasperated and more vaguely threatening. I mean, he does get bullied a lot, and everyone has a breaking point…
Re: Stargazer history. So THAT’S what all the talk was about.  I’ve always been aware that Picard famously had a previous command prior to the Enterprise, but somehow I’d missed this part of the backstory.

@febuwhump Day 11: Fever
Fandom: Quantum Leap Whumpee:  Ian Wright
Summary: Ian goes to work sick, because of course they do.

~~*———————————————*~~
Ian felt like ass. They were pretty sure they looked like ass too, despite the copious amounts of foundation and concealer they’d attempted to hide their gaunt features and eye bags with. They scarcely had the energy to even do their hair this morning, the fuzzy mess of bleached, untamed curls left to do what it liked and they just knew it looked like ass.
“You look like ass, Ian,” was literally the first thing out of Jenn’s mouth when they came to work.
“Ian, are you okay? You look... tired,” was Addison’s slightly more tactful first words.
“Oh, hell no. No way. No.” was Magic’s reaction. “What are you doing working in this state?”
Ian tried to brush him off, staring intently at Ben’s vitals as if the words on screen would stop blurring in and out of each other if they just looked a little harder. They were fairly sure they were shivering despite how unreasonably warm someone had made it in here -- were they sweating? Great, they probably smelled like ass now.
“Ian, answer me.” Magic’s voice was a little firmer this time, clearly not happy about being ignored despite his concern. “You’re not doing anyone any favors by being here.”
“I’m fine,” Ian insisted, “I’m functioning.”
“You’ve been staring at that screen saying nothing for about an hour,” Jenn called over from her desk, leaning to shoot them a raised brow, “Bull.”
Ian shot her a sharp glare -- then quickly regretted it as their vision swam. Hell, maybe they were a little sicker than they thought. “Look, I-I have to monitor Ben’s leaps. I have to keep an eye on Ziggy, I can’t just not come to work.”
“You saying my team isn’t capable of covering you for a couple damn days?” Magic lifted a brow of his own, and Ian felt their cheeks darken under the makeup (though if it was embarassment or a hot flush they weren’t sure). “Or that they’re disposable enough you can risk spreading whatever damn flu you’ve got to everyone else?”
“No-.. no of course not, I just-..” Great, they were getting flustered and not even in a fun way. As their breaths picked up their head swam and before they could collect themself Magic had to catch them in a swoon, carefully supporting them upright and looking them dead in the eye. “Go home, Ian.”
“If you move now you can catch a ride with Fern,” Jenn called over, “They’re finishing their shift in five.”
“I can drive, Jenn.”
“I’ll bring your car by later. You’re not driving like this.”
