I am grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the world...last night on our walk I kept smelling the most amazing hay like , patchouli laced scent. It was glorious. I kept thinking that I was back in the 60’s wearing my favorite solid hippy chick perfume...does any one remember the Coty Sweet Earth solid perfume compacts? Well I couldn’t figure out what I was smelling until I got around to the front of the lake. It was an enormous patch of Yellow Sweet Clover, a beautiful biennial that is used for forage, cover cropping, conservation, and honey making and of course bouquets... I walked over to admire it and found that it was covered with honeybees, always a good sign. I thanked them for taking me on such a delightful trip down memory lane and went home to enjoy a most delightful and psychedelic sleep. I’m obsessed with kitchen gardens...I love to plant them and harvest them and simply watch them grow. I love to help others create them as well.. it gives me so much pleasure to watch garden dreams come to life. In my world, all is well as long as the chard is growing and the tomatoes are ripening. Not much gives me as much pleasure as creating a dinner I’ve grown myself. I’m on a personal quest to help everyone I know turn any little patch of grass into a self sustaining food garden, because who needs a lawn anyhow! ? This little book from England showed up on my front porch this morning and is a basic history of walled gardens. I think that we have so much to learn from the practices of the past. This Anise Hyssop plant was a gift from my dear friend @kathleengips . It has gifted me with lots of little babies which I repotted and I am having a wonderful time watching them grow. This is one of my favorite plants for so many reasons. It attracts pollinators, just today it was covered with honeybees and A MONARCH BUTTERFLY! I was thrilled! It’s also one of the loveliest tea plants, with a gentle anise flavour and the added benefit of being a great friend to your respiratory system. I’ve found it to be wonderful when my allergies are kicking up, but it’s just an all around pleasant tea to drink. Do any of you grow it? This is the raw honey that breakfast dreams are made of. This is a jar of honey from the very first harvest from the beehives that are nestled in the Maine Heritage Apple Orchard. There are two things I always buy from @traderjoes because they make them so much better than I would. First is their potato pancakes ( I’ve never had the patience to make my own😄) and the other are these delightful cheese blintzes. Served here with sour cream, veggie sausages and some fresh fruit , they were delightful. Oh and let’s not forget a generous lashing of maple syrup which for some reason I always feel a little guilty about😂🍁 I don’t think that my little and very Russian Aunt Ida (who made the best blintzes ever ) would have minded the syrup though ..She would have thought it clever😂 She would have loved the berries though..she was the first person ever to pop a fresh blackberry into my mouth , straight from her bushes, starting what has been a lifelong obsession. Regardless of what you put on top of them, try them. “ In a whisper, they tell me spring is coming. What are you missing right about now?” Jane Kaufman This was so simple and so lovely that it just begged me to share it. Thank you to my friend Jane for letting me do so. The beautiful photograph is hers as well. If I’m to be honest, I’m not really missing a thing. I love Midwinter and it’s quiet promises. Everything is cozy in February. 🫖 I’m beginning to see the earliest signs of spring around me even in the deep chill that still blankets us here in Northeast Ohio. A friend tells me that she is spending a week helping to birth a flock of lambs. 🐑The groves of maples are tapped and you can almost smell the sap running. 🍁As I walk through the park by my home, the water in the springs seems closer to the surface and here and there , a break of bright fresh green breaks through the snow. The sun when it shines is so bright and getting closer, so that when it hits the icicles on my roof they turn quickly into slush. When I still lived on our farm, Before I’d climb into bed I’d put our buckwheat cereal in a cast iron pot on this old wood stove ( swipe left) shown here in its second life in the garage of a dear friend. We’d get up a couple of hours later and it would be perfect, rich and creamy and the whole house would smell like woodsmoke, butter, porridge and cinnamon. Here is the next best thing…I get up at 4:30 and put the buckwheat, butter, cinnamon, salt and water into the good old fashioned mini crock pot. Turn it on and in two and a half hours you’ve got perfect, creamy porridgy buckwheat. We usually add berries, cream and maple syrup, but yesterday we had it with spiced pears from last years harvest. Sometimes if I’m feeling really nostalgic I add smoked salt to get a wee bit of that smoky flavor. This is so easy and is something that the instapot can not do.
