Spruces in Witchcraft
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Left: the picea abies, also known as the European or Norway spruce. Right: the picea pungens, also known as the blue, green, white, Colorado, or Colorado blue spruce. Images courtesy of Wikipedia.]
Identifying Spruces
[Disclaimer: Please use common sense, field guides written by professionals, and the professionals themselves first and foremost, not what I write there. This is for information's sake only, please don't use this post as the end-all for your spruce identification. Thank you.]
Because spruce trees are commonly mistaken for both fir and pine trees, it's important to know if the tree you're looking at is really spruce.
Spruce trees have individually-growing needles that are sharply pointed at the end and easy to roll between one's fingers; these needles don't grow in clusters and aren't flat. They're usually rounded or squared.
The cones have smooth, thin scales. They'll be flexible and easy to bend - unlike pines, which are thick, rough, and woody. The cones also hang towards the ground when they're on the branches.
Spruce tree branches, when stripped of their needles, feel rough because of the woody pegs that the needles grow from. Fir and pine trees both usually lack these pegs and thus feel smoother than spruce branches.
When covered in needles, spruce branches will look bushy and full and will be upturned. First will be turned downward, while pines will have fewer branches and look slightly sparser.
Generally speaking, these trees are what you expect when you think of Christmas trees.
Spruces as a Food
[Disclaimer: Please talk to a doctor or other healthcare professional before you eat a tree. Do your own research, and you probably shouldn't bite a hunk off of a tree if you're pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor, I guess.]
Certain kinds of spruces, such as blue spruce, are edible - you could eat the spruce tips, take a bite out of the cones in spring, or even chew on the inner wood if you so desire.
However, as mentioned in the disclaimer, please talk to your doctor or another healthcare professional before you go around and chomp on some random trees.
Just because you can, that doesn't mean you should.
Spruces in Magic
In witchcraft and other forms of magic, spruces are associated with forests and the element of water. The Norway spruce is associated with the planet Jupiter.
Spruce's correspondences include abundance, battling evil, cleansing, connecting with forests, creation, intuition, making potions and witches' brooms, protection, psychic abilities, purification, shapeshifting, transformation, turning, and wisdom. The needles are used for energy, while the cones are used for grounding and trust.

One of the most underrated skills among witches is knowing your local flora/fauna. It’s all well and good to buy expensive herbs but really you should be looking at what grows around you.

Note
do you know of any good books on correspondences?
Hello! I do!
The two main books I use for correspondences are:
Exploring Spellcraft: How to Create and Cast Effective Spells
Your Book of Shadows: How to Write Your Own Magickal Spells
Both of these books have TONS of different correspondences! I use them almost daily for constructing my own spells and just for reference, as well!
Also! Not a book, but still a great resource is Pinecone.pub. You put in your intent and it gives you correspondences for that purpose!
Hope this helps you! ❤

Herb correspondences: Bay leaves And Basil
So, I recently bought myself some herbs at the store that I found in spells often to add to some of the other spices my parents I have. I may still be a baby witch, but hopefully, another baby witch will find this helpful. I will also add tips on growing each herb and some dishes to make to incorporate them if anyone is interested in kitchen witchcraft or is still in the broom closet like myself. Just be forewarned, I haven't tried any of these recipes (mostly bc my family doesn’t trust me to cook anything edible for some reason), so please don’t get mad at me if they turn out gross.
Tumblr media
Basil: Love, exorcism, wealth, sympathy, and protection. Dispels confusion, fears & weakness. Drives off hostile spirits. Associated with Candlemas. Carry to move forward in a positive manner despite perilous danger. Strewn on floors to provide protection from evil. Sprinkle an infusion of basil outside of the building where you hope to be employed for luck in a job interview (be careful not to be seen!) or in your business to attract money and success. Wear or carry to aid in attracting money and prosperity. Also Called: Common Basil, Sweet Basil, St. Josephwort, St. Joseph's Wort, Tulsi, Tulasi, Krishnamul, Kala Tulasi, Witches' Herb, Alabahaca, American Dittany
Basil is a “forgiving plant”, meaning it usually is a little easier to grow. I think. It likes a lot of sunlight and warmer temperatures, so put the plant somewhere it can get 6+ hours of sunlight a day. Fertilize it in temperatures warmer than 70 degrees F/16 degrees C. Water it often in hot weather and prune it too. it also grows better in humid conditions.
https://www.foodnetwork.com/healthyeats/recipes/2013/07/10-ways-to-use-up-fresh-basil
Tumblr media
Bay Leaves: Protection, good fortune, success, purification, strength, healing and psychic powers. Write wishes on the leaves and then burn the leaves to make the wishes come true. Place under the pillow (or use in dream pillow) to induce prophetic dreams. Place in the corner of each room in the house to protect all that dwell there. Carry bay leaf to protect yourself against black magick.
I live in the US and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a bay leaf tree for sale, so I’m sorry but I don’t know how to grow them.
https://www.allrecipes.com/recipes/1062/ingredients/herbs-and-spices/herbs/bay-leaves/
That’s all for this post, but I will be posting more correspondences soon. The next one is probably going to be on Rosemary. Because it’s versatile. Have a nice day/evening/night/morning, and thank you for reading my post!

So I absolutely adore the trend of putting eukalyptus leaves in your shower/bath. For one, it’s pleasant, but also there are great (and in my opinion underutilized) magical properties to eukalyptus.
-Eukalyptus as an herb or in oil form is a great healing agent. Always be cautious and dilute the oil, but burn as incense it can bring elevated mood and aid in healing.
-Eukalyptus also has very unique protective qualities. The protection is somewhat short lived but protected all the same.
-The uniqueness of eukalyptus protection is that though it is strong to remove evil and negative energy, it also does not expel positive energy. This makes it ideal for spirit work when you want to protect yourself but not remove positive spirits.
So with all that in mind, I love that there are just a bunch of people who are into interior design having eukalyptus leaves in their bathrooms but little do they know they are aiding in their healing while warding off evil and just getting clean lol.
