You know that modern day Greek mythology adaptations for the gods by n large failed big time when you realize that Disney Hercules Zeus one of the best ones we got for decades minus his sex life and some darker moments lol 😆
Tumblr media
Design wise he looks great; creative to fit a cartoon features with long hair and beard obviously looking older in age but still looking handsome and nicely built.
Personality wise he is a little bit inconsiderate of other people's feelings (see Hades being mocked for his work) plenty of arrogance plenty of bossy attitude, angered easily and showing his anger clearly, helpful but not TOO helpful with his kids and of course personally entering battle and even if he was hanging out relaxing with Hera he immediately ordered a counter attack against the titans and entered the battle immediately to lead it.
Like if they included the fights with Hera you would have it all uahahaha and keep it family friendly of course! But the dude was not depicted as a cold jerk villain who only wants amusement lol 😆 and he clearly loves his wife (like come on even Olympus had their moments of peace hahaha)
Like seriously a movie that was not even a mythology adaptation but a sarcastic satire of Hollywood culture and superhero movies that simply used mythology as tool of expression managed to make a more solid Zeus than many "highly and mighty productions" in modern times with some exceptions....
And that is concerning and hilariously bad at the same lol 😆 (and I LOVE this movie! I laugh my ass off every time!)
[Result of a discussion with my dearest friend @artsofmetamoor do consider checking her amazing art!]

"Father." Apollo lowered his head. Zeus smiled, as if respect was a factor. Although, that is not to imply that he did not understand the ultimate truth. The truth, of course, being that in a civilised society fear must rule all.
"Stand up straight." Zeus commanded, slitted eyes warily upon his son. Apollo did as commanded. His eyes- Golden. A cheap joke, Zeus thought- flitted to Zeus'- Stormy blue. Tasteful.
Hera's gaze, of course, laid not upon either of the pair, but rather upon her nailbeds, those which she idly clawed at.
Zeus' lips split in a toothy, malicious smile.
"So, my son, what brings you here before me on this fine day?"
Outside, lightning congregated within grey clouds, rain lashed upon rough-hewn dirt roads and thunder reached the ears of those who cowered in the shadows.
Apollo swung his lyre from his back, plucking a few sweet notes before he spoke.
"Father," He began, a melodic lilt to his practised tone, "I wish to bring a case before the council."
Zeus' laugh was like thunder rolling beyond the hills.
"Has someone been stealing your laurel leaves?" Zeus jested, "Or dismissing your cows as they sleep? Hardly council matters. You are dismiss-"
"The case of Hyacinth. I wish to assign blame to the culprit."
Now, Hera rose her head, two-toned eyes sparkling.
"Oh..." She purred, "Oh, my dear-" She directed her musings to her husband, pouting, "-You must. You simply must."
"Hera, but-"
"No." She cut him off, smiling, "No, dear. You will take this case or I may bring that of that pretty little nymph of yours before them."
Zeus, lips set in a line of marble, bore down upon Apollo, "You may have what you seek." He grumbled.
Hera beamed.

Note: I want to add the detail that Hera's iris' and pupils are peacock feathers. Didn't seem relevant to add but there. The blue bit in the middle, I mean.

About Zeus and Hera’s shared epithets
The Divine Couple shares a couple (pun intended) of epithets under which they were worried, and I have a few words about them (some of them are my interpretation of them)
The main one that comes to mind is the Gamelios-Gamelia pair which means “of marriage”. This is the epithet under which the Divine Couple would be prayed under during marriage ceremonies. Alternatively, the epithets Zygios-Zygia (meaning roughly the “spouse”) would be used for the same purpose.
Another one is the Teleios-Teleia pair, with Hera mostly being known for Her Teleia epithet. Meaning “complete”, this epithet is a bit more obscure and location-specific, with it being tied to the Argian/Boeotian areas of Greece (Hera’s main cult centres), where She was worshipped in the Pais-Teleia-Chera cycle. The Teleios-Teleia epithets designate the divine couple as married, settled down, and hence “complete” in the establishment of the Ancient Greek homestead (or oikos).
Now, the difference (my interpretation here) between Gamelios-Gamelia and Teleios-Teleia pairs is that the former is specifically for marriage ceremonies while the latter is more for matters regarding the life of a complete Greek person (ie married and settled down in a homestead with children), which despite how vague this distinction sounds, was specific enough for the people of Argos and Epidaurus to be considered as epithets under which to worship the Divine Couple, enough to add two different months in their calendars (namely Teleos and Gamos), and I think that’s beautiful.

Hera: [to Zeus] Goodnight. Sleep tight. Don't let the fact that you're a terrible person and husband keep you up tonight.

@z-eusie I am writing the next Zeus/Hera chapter for There's a story left untold and the angst is killing me slowly. I love them so much.
Here's a little something because I have too many feelings about our favorite dysfunctional pair and I need someone who understands.
“I’ll come back. I don’t know how long it’ll take, if the world will be better. I don’t think I’ll be okay when I do. But I am going to need something to come back to. You have to promise you’ll wait for me.”
Nobody expected him to promise. They expected him to keep it even less.

(I think mythology goes on this blog? sorry if not) I wanted to share this translation of a line from Ovid's Fasti, dealing with Jupiter and Juno's relationship (the Roman version of Zeus and Hera). she says, "It is something to have married Jupiter and to be Jupiter’s older sister. I am uncertain whether I am prouder of my younger brother or of my husband." It's a really striking line to me bc it explores the "double love" nature of their relationship in a way we don't see often enough IMHO
Hi Anon,
I switched this over because mythology goes on the main.
I've never heard that quote before and I really like it. The "double love" as you put it is totally one of the things that draws me to incest shipping.

If you REALLY know Ares (Greek Mythology) which option would he pick?
🗡️- to become worthy of his father’s love and affection
🛡️-to never have to fear becoming his father
⛓️-to be respected as a god like the other Olympians
🪓-to be loved as a son, not a weapon

"Artemis is a maiden Goddess." Hera began, "She therefore has not married. You condone this?"
Zeus, in return, narrowed his eyes, inclining his head with an abundance of caution.
"Athena is afforded the same. Two of your daughters." Her gaze turned cold in an instant, withering the face of her husband, "So, why should Hebe- Commander of youth itself- be forced into marriage? She is but a child, after all, and she will remain as such."
"Hera-"
In her rage, she allowed him not a spare word. "What authority do you think allows you to address me? Wedding vows? You have never before considered them law and you will not begin now."
Zeus' voice did not strike her as the thunderous depth when he spoke. His words, she found, merely caused her to recognise the emptiness which already lay inside her.
"You may join your daughter." He told her, "If it pleases you. A marriage to Herakles is far from the worst punishment I could consider."
"My daughter." Hera repeated, "She's my daughter until she holds your cup, is that correct?"
Her husband did not grace her insolence with a reply. Many words born of fury graced his lips throughout his reign and yet, in the face of his wife, his Queen, Zeus simply turned away in shame.
