I've seen many people say Alicent walking away from Aegon, as well as other scenes of her failing to comfort her kids is her "lacking empathy" or something along those lines

I've seen a lot of people say that empathy is a basic human trait, and that "anyone" would've gone to him and provided some form of comfort (e.g hugging, apologising, etc.)

NEED people to recognise that not everyone shows empathy the same way. That not everyone recieves empathy in the same way. There are many reasons to as why Alicent walked away, 1. Maybe she was worried she would only make things worse. 2. maybe she thought he preferred to be left alone.

We can see very clearly the emotions of pain on her face. She wants to help but doesn't know how, she's not really close with her children. So she doesn't know if her providing him comfort by hugging/her presence in the room with him would make things better or worse. E.g, myself- I love my friends and family dearly but sometimes when I'm grieving I need to be left alone and someone coming to talk/hug/be with me, regardless if their intention is to help, will honestly make things worse than better.

There is no one way to show empathy nor one way to receive empathy. I don't think it's fair for people to say this about Alicent when we don't know at all if it would've helped. In my opinion it's a very black and white view of something that is an extremely complex thing.

Grief isn't the same for everyone. Comfort from others isn't always the answer to grief. Grief can be shown in many forms.

It reminds me of how Helaena got a lot of hate after the b&c scene, and people saying she had no empathy/care for her children due to her reaction. Not everyone reacts the same to these things. If you would kick and scream that's valid, but people, like Helaena who would dissociate from shock and trauma are valid as well.

We're all completely different individuals, billions of us. We all experience things and show things different. Just because we may experience things differently, doesn't mean we are lacking of empathy.

In my opinion, the only people who fail to have empathy are the ones who cannot comprehend this.

While figuring out the reference sheets for the adults, I realized I haven’t actually done much about Nate and Kari, beyond Kari’s involvement in my Httyd crossover. I popped out Nate’s design, introduced Kari, and then showed nearly nothing else about Nate, and only showed stuff about Kari in my httyd crossover. So clearly I need to change that and show more about their relationships with Fontaine and Ant. And I will do that using Incorrect Quotes, because I also haven’t done those in a while. I will start with Nate, because I’ve shown less of him than Kari

Coming back to this previous ingo×irida-ish post because my job gives me an unfortunate amount of time to think and anyway, an alternative version:

While in the modern day, maybe Irida sees something online, or maybe some kind of traveling history museum exhibit visits Pasio etc, but the point is she sees old historical photos of Warden Ingo. And most of those photos aren't anything new or super surprising for her- hell, she literally remembers Laventon taking these exact ones. She's even in some of them.

The part that surprises her is that there are photos from later years that include Emmet.

Because at the point in time that Irida left Hisui through the rift, she had no idea who Emmet was. Ingo had told her about his Man in White, but that was all they knew. Emmet wasn't in Hisui.

But judging by these photos and documents, he eventually will be.

So Irida still takes Ingo's hands and promises to find him later. And she still sadly tells both brothers to make the most of their time here together, and make sure to live life without regrets.

Irida goes through the closing rift back to Hisui, and she tells Warden Ingo what she learned from her trip to the future. Ingo can't thank her enough; he just needs to wait, and they'll be reunited...eventually. At some point. Just no idea when.

And it lasts years. Irida goes out to the highlands one day, and she can tell this is a Bad Day because Ingo is just kinda sitting there, up near the peak, staring out over the vastness of Hisui and dissociating. Like he's trying to watch for something, just waiting for it to happen. Irida almost regrets telling him on days like these, but it's not as though she can take it back now.

Ingo doesn't particularly acknowledge her greeting, so Irida sits next to him. Still nothing, so she sidles over and presses up against Ingo's arm until he finally presses back a bit. He never stops watching the sky, though. Close enough.

"This waiting is...difficult."

"I know." Irida follows his tattered black sleeve down from his elbow until she can find his hand, grips his cold fingers between hers and squeezes. She's sure he'll arrive soon, though. As much as it hurts to see Ingo like this, watching him give up would be so much worse.

"Just keep waiting patiently...just hold on a little bit longer, ok?"

Luke unknowingly cussing at Ik is absolutely hilarious. Poor boy has no idea what he said but he can probably tell from IK's reaction that it wasn't good.

Also, two fun facts that I think could cause interesting interactions between IK and the others.

There's a creature in the game known as the Leviathan which is, as that one high-quality Rain World review I watched a while back stated, a "sentient, aquatic, hydraulic press, with enough crush force to liquidize the local avian wildlife." Which are much larger than, but still fully capable of eating, the slugcat.

Slugcats are able to store non-food/non-digestible items in their stomach as long as it isn't too big compared to them, and they can easily spit it back up later when it's needed.

now that i think of it, would ik understand the others?? maybe she somehow only understands the ones that can understand her, even though everyone else speaks the same language. it makes satan so upset that HE can't communicate with her, he HAS to ask belphie, and even then belphie will do it incorrectly just to mess with him

diavolo is on the 'can understand' list though, so when he introduces the brothers to the little slugcat and gets to levi, ik responds by flattening herself on the ground and yelling at him for putting her in the same room as a predator (all levi hears a very long very angry very cute 'waaaaaaaaa')

lucifer brings home some cursed artifact that diavolo wanted him to investigate and leaves it in the common room for a moment. when he gets back the artifact is gone and ik is very suspiciously sitting right where it used to be. he has a dog-ate-something-it-shouldn't moment and he just seizes her like "WHAT DID YOU DO SPIT IT OUT SPIT IT OUT RIGHT NOW"

they'd all be very curious about how exactly this creature works, so for a while they have a scheduled 'creature time' where they all gather at the house of lamentation to just Observe ik as she goes about her very important slugcat business. it's actually very therapeutic (even if she spends a concerning amount of time hitting things with her knife)

ok hiiii Will!!! just got hit with thoughts of mickey 'n rose again, they are sooooo fun to me. but also i love examining their relationship (romantic or otherwise) and i love hearing other people's thoughts on their relationship. so.... if you have any thoughts abt them please share!

oh i think i have a whole fic about mickey somewhere hold up.

yeah! bit old, but, here. i’ve always liked mickey, even back when i was watching the show as a kid. because he was just A Guy, you know. unfair to pit him against the doctor, unfair to judge him for not being who rose chooses. He never did anything wrong.

(And. Well. Not to bring up fandom scuffles, but it is Telling to me how some people feel the need to invent The Wrongs Of Mickey Smith to prove how “bad” he was for rose. ‘he told rose not to read his emails, which means he was cheating on her and hiding it’ <3 what the fuck are you talking about. asking someone not to read your emails is normal.)

And they get to occupy one of those little relationship niches that I adore, which is like! they broke up and they’re still friends, still important to each other! mickey’s the one who comes with jackie, following rose from another universe! (mickey & jackie relationship underappreciated btw. the people left behind… the absolute rift that tore between them when rose vanished and he was the only suspect and jackie had no one else to blame (but herself. for one last phonecall where she didn’t even ask where rose was.) and then the fact that jackie’s the one who mickey says he’ll miss most during journey’s end before he leaves. sorry not to get off-track but i love them too. p clear to me that, dating rose or no, mickey’s still a member of the tyler family, esp by the end there.)

they’re all tangled up and complicated, lines crossed and feelings hurt, but at the end of the day, i think they were better for knowing each other. mickey never would have gotten to step up into his hero role in another dimension and learn how much he was capable of if not for following rose there.
