People really need to get better at distinguishing between a games core ideas, and additional flair.
Let us suppose I make a character for OD&D, Bertha the Cleric. I decide that Bertha - along with having black hair and green eyes and poverty-stricken parents - is gay. I then go on to play OD&D with Bertha, and she goes and explores various horrible trap-filled holes in the ground with some other adventurers, and they walk away with big sacks of gold and level up.
Does this make OD&D gay? Is OD&D now queer media? No. Bertha's gayness wasn't actually important to the gameplay, anymore than her eye colour was. That gayness - while potentially neat - was flair.
OD&D didn't prevent me from playing a gay character, not because it's a game with queer themes, but because it's entirely disinterested in if my character was gay.
Hell, my decision to make Bertha's parents poor was a more meaningful choice; wealth is a central concern of OD&D and the pursuit of wealth is a motivation for most player characters.
The same is true for many more modern games, such as D&D 5e, Pathfinder and shadowrun. While you are able to make your PC gay - and the book might even helpfully state that you can do this (as if you ever needed the book's permission) - that decision remains flair. Your PC being gay will not, if you play as the book expects, meaningfully affect events.
This is even true if the books include canon gay characters. If the princess in your module has a girlfriend rather than a boyfriend, that's probably also flair. The trick is to see if swapping it out so the girlfriend becomes a boyfriend; if this doesn't meaningfully alter events, then that gayness was, again, flair rather than something the game cares about.

Brain vomit...I am insanely jealous of the people who can get the new merch. And I am planning an elaborate heist. But aside from that, I'm also crazy over the lore implications of the new photo-card designs...
Tumblr media
Of course, they're all suffering as per usual. But it's symbolized by cracks in their skin. When I saw that, I immediately linked it back to the collapse of barriers, secrets, structures, etc. The hearts, however, confused me a bit. But I suppose it's because the reason they all "broke" is ultimately because of their love.
This is probably the most distressed Ivan has ever looked in a photo card, and really, he's honest. The tone of his card is sickeningly oversaturated and overwhelming, and his emotions are visceral, I also find it interesting how the cracks are littered all over his face, and the hearts leak out like that from the neck--and Ivan holds his face like he's trying to "fix" it, or in other words, "keep it together" as he's breaking down and becoming vulnerable, he has to cover up his expression behind something more appealing as he always does. He's also wearing his Anakt Garden uniform. When he was a child, he was just learning how to develop his mask. But even then, he faltered sometimes, Ivan's automatic response is always to try to fix it, even if he's underplaying the severity of his feelings, it's what he has to do regardless, I love his card for that portrayal when he tries to keep one wound closed, another wound opens, its erratic and uncontrollable, like his true emotions. When I see him trying, it looks like it's hard because, well--he's breaking down. Normally, you can't just bounce back from that, so in this rare moment, he struggles with how to deal with it. (A certain desperation to keep up the act?) (His eyes. I really like his eyes in this PC, it's more akin to those moments when his true expression comes out, in those very rare moments)
And then there's Till, I feel pain when my wife feels pain. His expression, too, is very overwhelming. Like he's suffocating too, But his cracks are minimal, not because his pain is small but because vulnerability--something he loathes, is coming to the surface. In tears, Till is suppressing his emotions. Who he bleeds for is ambiguous here, you could say the hearts are for Ivan or for Mizi, but I think it's both. Because he hides from the both of them and eventually the love he feels for them both seeps out one way or the other like a slow leak through a crack in the wall, he's spent so many years building a fortress of a barrier to emotionally separate himself from others, it's his way of protecting himself. But at the peak of his suffering, long too deep into this hell, losing Mizi and then Ivan, he's crying because he's slowly breaking down, and the way he grips at his hair like he's trying to hold back...urgh. In different ways, indifferently, Till ignores Ivan and his affections, and fearfully, he avoids Mizi, instead watching her from afar, doing small things to feel close to her, even when he has the opportunity to get closer, and even when she acknowledges that he's so avoidant of her that it makes Mizi concerned if he even likes her or not, as was said in the Artbook when asked for her opinion of him:
"Mizi -> Till: I'd love to be friends with him. He's an artist who's so dedicated to his work. But he seems to be avoiding me... Does he hate me?"
Till doesn't confront relationships any more than he has to even though he cares so so deeply for them because confronting his emotions and confronting vulnerability, sadness, happiness, etc., and especially fear, is a commitment you have to understand how to accept and respond to, and Till doesn't understand the how when he can only go back to his starting point, hiding and or getting angry, because it's easier. At this point, it's instinct. Shyness is one thing, but doubt is something that can make you freeze in place, confuse you, make you feel unsafe, and even hinder your ability to control yourself in the wake of fear. Fear is what roots Till in place. Till, even for how emotional and sensitive he truly is, he fears the type of vulnerability being emotional requires, he knows of it, but he can never truly embrace it out of fear, that's why he rarely ever shows his heart. He already knows that wearing your weakness on your sleeve leaves you vulnerable to pain, he used to be childish and vulnerable once, and technically, he still is, but just imagine what years upon years of cruelty has instilled in him. So he acts cold and avoidant, and these misunderstood emotions lead to other misguided intentions. That's what brings me to the quote on the back of his pc
Translation:
"사랑 같은 애매한 말보다 증오란 말이 확실해요" -> "The word hatred is more certain than vaguer words like love"
Rather than confronting uncertainty and exploring the confusing, unpredictable, and gray area that is love, hate is honest, hate is intentional, hate is malleable, and you can control it. It's Till's response to feeling unsafe to resort to anger, in the same way, Ivan resorts to trying to fix it and put on a facade. Again, it ties back to the fact that Till doesn't and has never hated Ivan, but understanding Ivan is as confusing as understanding love, Till is as much of a puzzle himself. That's why they confuse each other and clash. So they come close but remain distanced because their connection is almost like unattractive magnets, Till is sensitive and loving, compared to Ivan's regrets; of not being nicer, of not understanding how to get closer to Till, then I think about what Till's recollection of his relationship with Ivan and Mizi in retrospective would be like when he does acknowledge it.
And now...mmizisua. To me, Sua looks more aware of her pain than Mizi is, like in the storyline, she is more aware of their fragility and the cruelness of their environment. It's surely a parallel to the way Sua had kept Mizi in the dark for so many years, even when this pain and this love are so destructive, she covers up her wound with her hand and hides it from Mizi, to protect her, her wound is a direct correlation to her (inevitable) death, a truth that would shatter Mizi, even after he death she wants Mizi to remember her the same as she was when she was alive, unaffected by their world. She tries to force a smile as if everything is still okay, especially because she doesn't want to affect the way Mizi looks at her so lovingly, how would Mizi ever recover if she knew the truth?
And Mizi would seemingly be none the wiser if not for the tears because, to me, she knows but looks to Sua for comfort, to forget even when she is hurt the same way, I love this side of MiziSua a lot, the side that highlights the cruelty of their relationship that surrounds their bubble, because as long as they could distract themselves with the presence of each other, the co-dependence of their dynamic, they could forget as if they couldn't feel the pain at all as long as they had each other, but Mizi is still so affected by her pain, all this hiding had amounted to nothing in the end because Mizi never changes in Sua's eyes, and Sua is still hiding her pain, but that day, Sua had broken that bubble of ignorance to the evil around them. Mizi's cracking, and she shows Sua when she pulls back her hair. It's an interesting contrast between MiziSua and IvanTill, when Mizi and Sua smile, they look happy to be in love, even if it's twisted and hurts each other, because they only rely on each other, and Ivan and Till look inconsolably pained.

Ep 5, rage, and time
This was a FASCINATING episode. We’ve got a lot more questions than answers right now— about exactly the nature of Fig’s curse (we know it hopped to her from Gilear, but how does the armor of pride play into it), the exact nature of what happened to Cassandra, and what kind of big bad god (???) was talking to Kristen after the fight— so I don’t have a snappy thesis about this week’s ep. But I have some themes buzzing around my head like persistent flies. So let’s talk about them.
I saw someone earlier point out that rage and anger seems to be a dominant theme of the season, after Kristen got advantage for leaning into anger at her parents, and I think we know for sure now that that’s true. I refreshed myself on what happened to Lydia— she sealed a dangerous demon inside a soul gem and embedded it in herself to keep the demon from escaping. She was in a permanent rage to keep herself alive, and the impact of that disabled her. As a disabled fan I have always loved this rep, because the gem functions like a chronic illness, and I personally have used anger at the medical system and the ableist world to survive being chronically ill. (She also refused to have the gem removed and risk releasing the demon, which is a great refutation of the magical cure trope). Anger is a dirty fuel though, and if you burn too much of it you’ll end up burning yourself, and compromising your own mental health, in the process.
That reminds me of the kind of things we were circling from the beginning of the season— burnout, exhaustion, being past where you can fight. And if people heap enough stress on you (from schoolwork or otherwise) a kind of natural response to that is to break into rage at some point.
I don’t exactly understand the mechanisms of the star bursts that originated within Cassandra and then made her monstrous. Were parts of her anger embedded in them like the demon was in Lydia’s soul gem, and then when they re-entered her they turned that rage into something uncontrollable? Why did they affect Kalina that way and why did she mention Ragh’s name? I’m really not sure, although I do hope that this means that Lydia will play a larger role this season and we’ll see more of her and her cool wheelchair soon.
The other things that’s bouncing around my head is the theme of time (a recurring Elmville theme; chronomancy is the greatest magic of all after all). I think this season is concerned with time, and what it means to run out of time, even more than freshman and sophomore year. We have Arthur and Ayda traveling through time and the quadrangle situation. Now we have the Synod clock and a verifiable time loop (side note: I did ABSOLUTELY burst out laughing when Brennan exasperatedly said “anyone can roll arcana to understand time loops” when the PCs were confused, like GOD haven’t you all seen this in a million science fiction stories by now??? A deeply relatable moment when the players aren’t picking up the lore you’re putting down). But maybe more importantly, we’re seeing the consequences of not having enough time this season, or maybe what happens when the clock keeps running after the adventure is supposed to be over. No one has enough time to do all the assignments on their plate. Everyone missed out on fun, school planning, and relationship stuff over the summer because they had to be fighting the night yorb and didn’t have enough time to go home. (Also, side note, the night yorb turned everything to night therefore eliminating a way we have to tell time. No more days, just one long bleed of an adventure). And everything we’re doing right now feels like we’ve somehow hit the end of time and then kept going— Cassandra was never supposed to turn back into something akin to the nightmare king again. Kalina was never supposed to come back in the same form and taunt Riz again. The whole thing feels like a lesser, diminished time loop. Even the main high school antagonists, the rat grinders, are like a weird version of the bad kids who are stuck just looping over and over again, grinding out xp and repeating themselves infinitely.
I don’t really know how these two themes are going to hook together yet exactly, but I have a feeling they’re going to. Whoever was on the phone with Kristen feels like a hook for underlying plot, if not an outright big bad, which I honestly wasn’t sure we would get at all this season. So I’m gonna be so interested to see how these themes coalesce as the season goes on.
PS- I think The Seven is also extremely concerned with time (especially that sequence in the penultimate episode, which is my favorite in all of D20 I think. No spoilers if you haven’t seen it, but it is truly transcendent), and especially what it means to grow and change. I love that this theme keeps popping up in Elmville- it’s such a lovely frame for the kind of coming of age stories that get told there.

’M SORRY PRETTY.
Tumblr media
synopsis: you couldn’t help but feel betrayed and heartbroken over the fact that nagi had prioritised his games over your efforts.
includes: nagi seishiro x fem!reader. newly established relationship, hurt/comfort, nagi is a clueless mf — wc: 1176
Tumblr media
“Nagi,” (Name) called out, tapping his shoulder. He had been playing for almost the whole day now. She had planned a date at one of their favourite restaurants, both hers and Nagi’s. “A few more minutes, pretty. ‘m almost done,”he said, not even sparing her a glance.
Fed up, she turned his chair so he would face her. His face filled with shock before settling into an annoyed expression. “Why’d you do that?” he asked, his face displaying a lack of concern.
“Why did I do that?” she scoffed. “I’ve been trying to tell you to stop playing your games for almost the entire day, and you haven't even listened or looked at me properly! I’ve already made a reservation at our favourite restaurant, and despite reminding you the whole day, you haven’t bothered to check the time or get ready. Our reservation is in just an hour!” she yelled, clearly frustrated with his indifferent behaviour throughout the day.
“We could just reschedule, no? I don’t get why you’re so fussed about it,” Nagi replied, showing no concern as he attempted to back away towards his PC.
“I— Ugh, fine! Stay here with your stupid games!” she fumed, reaching for her phone to inform the restaurant about the cancellation. She stormed off to their shared bedroom and slammed the door shut, collapsing onto the bed and hugging a pillow.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she felt disappointed. This wasn’t the first time Nagi had prioritised his games over spending time with her. Yes, she had only been dating for a few months, but she felt heartbroken that he wouldn't even make an effort to be with her after being so smitten just a few weeks ago.
As tears began flowing from her eyes, and her sobs filled the room as the weight of her disappointment and heartbreak overwhelmed her. It felt like a wave of sadness crashing down on her, and she couldn't help but feel the pain deep in her chest.
She thought back to the beginning of her relationship, when Nagi had showered her with attention and affection. It had been a whirlwind of happiness and excitement. But now, it seemed like all of that had faded away, replaced by his obsession with gaming.
Feeling the emptiness and loneliness, she buried her face in the pillow, seeking comfort. The silence in the room was deafening, amplifying her feelings of rejection and sadness. It hurts to realise that the person she had grown fond of was not willing to prioritise their relationship.
Questions swirled in her mind. ‘Was it too much to ask for a partner who would give her the time and attention she deserved?’ ‘Should she confront Nagi about how his actions were making her feel?’ Or ‘was it better to distance yourself from someone who couldn’t see your worth?’
As she lay there, vulnerable and hurt, she knew that some difficult decisions lay ahead. But for now, she allowed herself to grieve, hoping that clarity and strength would eventually guide her through this emotional turmoil.
Tumblr media
Nagi couldn’t understand why (Name) was so fed up with him. To him, it was clear that she knew he loved his games and being lazy. He never understood why he had to go out every now and then when they could both stay at home and have fun together.
After (Name) slammed the door on him, he couldn’t help but rethink his words. Maybe he shouldn’t have brushed it off so easily and just gone with her. He sighed and decided to seek advice from Reo, texting him for guidance.
Reo scolded him for his behaviour and told him to talk to (Name) and offer her comfort. Nagi wasn’t sure if she would even be willing to talk to him right now, but he knew he had to try.
He turned off his PC and took the leftover cans of drinks he had while gaming to the trash can. Gently knocking on the door, he slowly walked into the bedroom, hearing your soft sobs and sniffles, which made his heart sink. He realised just how badly he had fucked up.
Tumblr media
A gentle knock on the bedroom door interrupted the overwhelming silence. She hesitated for a moment before reluctantly calling out, “What?”
The door slowly creaked open, revealing Nagi standing there, his face etched with concern and regret. He took a hesitant step inside, his voice filled with remorse. “Pretty, can I come in?”
Sniffling, she ignored him, still wrapped in her own emotions. Nagi sighed and walked over to the bed, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, seeking to offer comfort and support.
As his warmth enveloped her, she felt a mix of conflicting emotions. Part of her wanted to push him away, still hurt and frustrated with his previous behaviour. Yet, another part longed for his presence, craving the reassurance that things could be resolved.
“’m sorry pretty,” he whispered softly, his breath tickling her ear. “I didn’t mean to hurt you or disregard your plans. I’ve been so absorbed in my games that I forgot to spend time with you.”
She remained silent, allowing his words to sink in. Despite her anger, there was a glimmer of hope that maybe he was starting to understand the impact of his actions.
“I know sayin’ sorry isn’t enough,” Nagi continued, his voice filled with sincerity. “But please believe me when I say that I care about you deeply. You’re important to me, and I want to make it right. Can we please talk and fix this?”
“No,” she replied firmly.
Nagi’s heart shattered a bit, his face reflecting a mix of disappointment and sadness. However, you quickly soften your stance, realising that shutting him out completely wouldn't help either of you.
“Not today, at least,” she continued, her voice gentle. “Please, let’s just talk in the morning. For now, just cuddle me and shut up, you doofus.”
Turning around, she wrapped her arms around him, seeking comfort in his embrace. Nagi gladly reciprocated, holding her close. He leaned in to give a gentle kiss on her forehead before proceeding to pepper kisses on her cheek and nose. Before he kissed her lips, he paused and asked, “May I?”
In that moment, she found solace in each other’s arms. The two of you broke apart, and she snuggled closer to his chest, finding comfort in the rhythm of his heartbeat. Nagi gently brushed his fingers through your hair, soothing and lulling her to sleep.
As (Name) started to drift off, Nagi placed a tender kiss on her forehead, his love and regret evident in that simple gesture. He watched as her breathing steadied, feeling a mix of emotions but determined to make things right.
Carefully, he settled beside her, pulling the blanket over both of you. He observed the peaceful rhythm of her breathing as she slept, and he couldn’t resist planting another tender kiss on her forehead before joining (Name) in the land of dreams.

Trinkets, Books, 13: An eclectic library of dusty tomes, fictional textbooks, pocketbooks, paperbacks, hardcovers, booklets, leaflets and magical manuals. Paper leaves and the binding surrounding them can help define a character, kick off a subplot, fuel a fetch quest or simply serve as a generic macguffin. Commonly seen in video games such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, World of Warcraft and Skyrim, book items are a way to subtly world build while still handing out sellable loot. A wizard has a spellbook, a cleric has a holy text and now you have a trinket list.
A pulpy horror book filled with short stories made to terrify adolescents and thrill young adults. A creature who reads the book suffers from a Random Nightmare later the next time they sleep.
A large reference book on the subject of minted coinage within the realm. The top of each page has an illustration of both sides of a coin from a rubbing of the original, lovingly and delicately inked. Below is everything anyone could possibly want to know about the coin: number of dies in the designs, the date each went into service, the date each was taken out and destroyed, dates of repairs and re-engravings on each, quantities of each kind of coin struck. There is even a statement about whether or not there are known counterfeits. According the inside cover, the tome belongs to the Royal Assay of the city of TunFaire in the kingdom of Karenta.
A brand new copy of “Volo's Guide to What to Expect When You’re Expecting” with a couple of pages dog-eared in and “Congratulations!” written on the inside cover.
On the Sending Out of the Soul: An eight-page pamphlet on astral projection. The first seven pages of the pamphlet contain vague mystic writing; however, the eighth page details a formula for effecting astral travel. Among the required ingredients are a brazier and a mild hallucinogenic herb. The formula is always successful but has an unforeseen side effect: it invokes the horrid Outer God the Hydra. Knowledgeable PC’s are aware that the pamphlet first appeared a few generations ago and circulated among occult groups. Most copies were destroyed in the wake of a series of grisly murders.
Dictionnaire Infernal: A full description of the hierarchies of demons. This edition includes sixty-nine illustrations of demons by Louis Le Breton a skilled warlock, infamous for trading his soul for legendary artistic talent rather than arcane power or material wealth.
A journeyman’s guide to the proper practices of the guild who oversees the use of Random Artisan Tools. The travel volume includes how to care for your tools and how to interact with other crafters to seek replacement tools and have worn ones maintained. Other chapters detail acceptable prices for goods sold and services rendered along with advice on any specific ethical concerns the guild may have on trading. Most of the book contains descriptions and diagrams on how to perform basic tasks with the tools to the guild’s standards.
A small book, entitled "The Torrid Affair of Knight Gawain,". When placed on its spine it automatically falls open to particularly risqué page.
A personal journal owned by a psychiatrist who was studying the concept of nightmares and their metaphysical properties. The doctor recorded dozens of firsthand accounts of her patient’s slumbering terrors within this volume as well as notes on the patients themselves and how the dreams affected them. A person who peruses the journal for more than a few minutes suffers from a Random Nightmare the next time they sleep. Upon waking they feel compelled to document their experience on one of the blank pages left near the end of the book.
Alchemy of the Flesh: A dark green tome describing how to use a plethora of humanoid viscera and organs to enhance standard potion brewing techniques.
Tome Of The Endless Tale: A small, worn book with fanciful creatures or locales on battered leather covers, the tome’s pages fill with serialized stories that engage and distract the reader. The Tome focuses on a specific genre (See Note) but the stories crafted within the pages are unique to each reader, tailored by the magic from their own imagination and so vibrant that the book’s tales seem to come to life in the mind’s eye. Once per day, the reader can speak the command word written on the book's inside cover to fill its its pages with a serial story tailored to the speaker. This story typically takes 1 hour to read, continuing from where the last tale completed. ---Note: The DM can choose a genre or roll at random; 1, Adventure 2, Romance 3, Mystery / Crime 4, Horror 5, Thriller / Suspense 6, Fantasy 7, Science Fiction 8, Historical fiction.

—Click Here for additional Book Descriptions to give these objects even more personality.

A cloth-bound book of short stories by famous pulp novelist Cissifin Judeel. The volume is in excellent physical condition.
A bound section that includes chapters six, seven, and nine of some kind of book on mechanical engineering, seemingly torn from a larger work. They describe in enormous detail how to construct an intricate clockwork mechanism, but what it’s supposed to do is left unclear – and, besides, with chapter eight missing you wouldn’t know how to build one of the most important parts…
A cookbook, containing stunningly delicious recipes which, unfortunately, require extraordinarily rare and hard to find ingredients to make. It is no doubt someone's life’s ambition to cook and eat all of them at least once.
An anonymous epic poem about the Brass Spear Prince, full of stirring speeches and descriptions of battle scenes. For many noble travellers, this inspiring story is the reason why they became an adventurer in the first place.
An old bestiary, full of detailed information about monsters and magical beasts. Its sources appear to be approximately one-third hard evidence, one-third rumour or hearsay, and one-third the author's own fevered imagination, with no indication in the text as to which is which. It's information could easily save your life one day if you can only work out which parts of it are actually true...
A strange book whose pages are thin, blank stone tablets bound with knotted leather cords. Skeletons and zombies bow and grovel in the presence of the book.
Phoenix Breviary: A hand-size book bound in what appears to be black ostrich hide. Its pages are empty. Placed in a fire, the book will be unharmed and reveal the canonical hours of a banned cult for as long as it is surrounded by flame. Anything written in it will disappear until revealed similarly.
A joke book, full of genuinely hilarious (If rather mean-spirited) jokes. There are enough one liners alone for hours of belly-laughs and the text would be extremely valued to a jester or entertainer.
An anonymous journal, which records in obsessive detail the suspicious activities of a variety of seemingly-innocuous local citizens, whom the author seems to have been keeping under close observation. Either he was totally paranoid, or they are engaged in some kind of conspiracy. Maybe both.
An instruction manual, which describes in lunatic detail how to build a giant mechanical owl in order to further the cause of righteousness in the land. (The causal relationship between these two things is not made clear.) Chapters 3 through 9, which cover the construction of the owl’s internal mechanisms, have been ripped out.
A book of abstruse speculative philosophy, heavily annotated by some previous student. The annotations to the early chapters are detailed and lucid, but as the book goes on they grow increasingly incoherent, finally lapsing into ravings about a Beast and a City made of Red Steel. Due to the quantity of crazy annotations on its final pages, the last sections of the book are effectively illegible. You've never seen another copy.
An antiquarian manuscript whose author attempts, from the surviving literary and numismatic evidence, to deduce where the major strongholds of the local sorcerer-kings were back in the Age of Wonders. If she’s right, then there are at least three in the area which have been completely forgotten about, one of which is now buried under the streets of a major city…
The memoirs of a famous explorer, describing his many travels. The last chapter describes his plans for his final expedition, from which he never returned. But if the reader can work out where he went wrong, then maybe they'll have better luck…
A catalogue of birds found in this and adjacent kingdoms. Holding the book makes you want to obsessively tick off every species you manage to spot. A former owner of the book seems to have ticked off far more of the really rare ones than you, which causes oddly strong feeling of jealousy. One day, you will surpass him!
A child's sketchbook. On every page that isn't just unintelligible scribbling is a horrific monster.
A book of rather moving and helpfully non-specific love poetry. Memorize some of it for next time you need to persuade someone just how much you adore them!
A notebook in which someone has recorded, in great detail, the gastronomic preferences of a whole range of important and powerful people who live in a nearby large city. Very handy if you want to make a good impression - or to set someone else up to make a bad one!
An extremely spicy erotic novel about the life and loves of a famous courtesan. You keep it with you for, um, further research purposes.
A book of woodcut illustrations, more than a century old, depicting various fantastical monsters. One of them shows a particularly grotesque many-tentacled beastie fighting with a figure in spiked armour, who (Unlike every other figure in the book) has a string of nonsense words engraved beneath them. Disturbingly, these words form an anagram of one of the PC's names.
A book of heretical, politically seditious, and intermittently obscene drinking songs, complete with musical scores. Owning it is highly illegal, but you can’t bear to part with it: after all, it might well be the only copy which survived the purge…
A children's story book with a pressed faerie sprite between the pages...
An engrossing and well-written mystery novel: it's not very deep or clever, but pick it up and you'll soon be wondering where the last six hours went. Handy if you need someone to be distracted without realizing it.
Naga Naga Yo Fraga Blaga: A book whose cover is designed to look as if it was made from green scales, and its pages have golden edges. The volume talks at great length about an ancient race of serpentine creatures of great intellect and natural mastery of sorcery.
Of Gospels and Prophets: A stark white leather cover with gold filigree encompasses this religious reference book. The book does not delve deeply into any specific topic, rather approaches the “mile wide, inch deep” style with no more than 3-5 sentences on any of its entries.
Demozain: A book written by a dozen ur-priests. It makes no attempt to hide the ritual that would summon a sentient black hole to consume a world, but between the lines it reveals secrets of where the gods truly get their power.
A palm-sized notebook that always has at least one more blank page.
A blank spellbook bound in scarred wyvern hide.
Libro Venenum: A vile text filled with pages of aged papyrus and wrapped in dried lizard hide. Translated it proclaims to be the Book (of) Poisons and must be handled with absolute care. The reader is insight into the long-forgotten art of toxic magic, practised primarily by hags.
Folio Malevolence: A profane book whose spine is crafted from the bones of tormented fairies. The pages are all exposed with no actual cover and emit a foul odor. Upon close examination one can see skin has been stretched and matted onto the parchment. The runes on these pages make the reader feel uneasy and waves of hatred flow over them. Good aligned characters will feel immediate aversion to the text. The text itself orders the reader to let malevolence overwhelm then and to lead a life of malice and constant all-consuming rage at the world and everything in it.
A diary that begins quite normal, even boring, but becomes increasingly nonsensical, and the final few pages are indecipherable scrawlings.
A heavy book titled “The Many Faces of Perun”. Dozens of flowers are pressed between its pages.
Opuscule Covetous: A small notebook created with haphazard pieces of vellum tied together with gold wire. If the pages are spread out they appear to be covered in numbered pictures. Anyone who puts the pages in the correct order will see the drawings magically animate. The story they show will be capturing and include scenes of immense wealth and decadence. Those viewing will be intoxicated with avarice and immediately desire the treasures presented in the story. Unbeknownst to the cursed readers this is an elaborate trap set by a witch. What appear to be treasures are actually items the witch herself desires but cannot obtain. Examples would be a sacred holy relic, a newborn child or perhaps a lock of hair from a person pure of heart. No matter what the item they will always appear as something else to the afflicted character. The curse will cease once one or all of the items are obtained and presented to the witch.
A bound album of various portraits and sketches of individual local people and families. Someone went through and meticulously clipped out the heads of all the people in the pictures, leaving the rest of the scenes intact.
A ledger listing quantities and types of Random Humanoid Race bones and teeth along with dates, costs, and prices of sales and purchasing.
A book of anatomy with detailed drawings on xenomorphic creatures completely alien to this plane of existence.
A book of genealogical research of a prominent family in the nearby city, mostly consisting of a bound collection of public announcement posters and firsthand accounts of the local historical society.
The Parchments of Pnom: A manuscript written by Hyperborea's leading genealogist and soothsayer. It is written in the "Elder Script" of that land and contains a detailed account of the lineage of the Hyperborean gods, most notably Tsathoggua.
A beginner’s guide for people learning to play the Random Musical Instrument. The slim volume includes diagrams with all the parts of the instrument along with instructions for proper maintenance and care. Past the introduction the book contains the basics of how to play, along with a dozen simple songs that even someone who is unskilled in the performing arts could learn to play by reading the book and putting in a few weeks of regular practice.
A lengthy tome that boasts as its title “A complete history of the Random Humanoid Species”. The thick tome is dense with small, fine handwriting and goes into impressive (If dry) detail on the known origins of the people along with the high and lows of their past.
A military historical reference book focusing on the construction, maintenance and historical and modern use of the Random Weapon as it pertains to various forms of warfare.
Book of Dzyan: This work is an ancient text from a far away land, which contains “unwelcome truths”—cosmic revelations inimical to any human mind, which the Book tries to reconcile. As such, it describes accounts of mental and physical rites which are protective to mortals, as well as otherworldly threats and how to deal with them. Anyone who casts bard spells can research the spell contrary melody in this book to learn it in place of a 5th-level spell known.
A child’s sketchbook that features named stick figures of various people in a dozen different hands. The cover is marked with a surprisingly ornate rune, almost beautiful, though reading it makes one’s eyes droop.
De Vermis Mysteriis: An eldritch and bizarre spellbook, written by Ludvig Prinn, an ancient alchemist and necromancer who was burnt alive as punishments for his crimes against nature. Its pages are full of spells and rituals that summon strange entities, familiars, and creatures from beyond space and time. It also has a number of rituals for contacting and dealing with Great Old Ones, Outer Gods, and their minions.
A tiny leather bound book that contains a piece of writing such as a story, a poem, a manuscript, or a recipe. Each day, a new piece of writing magically replaces the previous one.
A cookbook, heavily bookmarked and written on, with pictures to accompany each recipe in the book. Licking the pictures allows you to find out how each dish tastes. Writing new ingredients in the recipes alters how the pictures taste. The back of the cookbook has empty pages to allow people to write down their own custom recipes. A few of the pages already have recipes written on them, some of which sound absolutely revolting.
A small novel, in which its 100 pages are used to describe a pebble. It consists of a single run-on sentence, and the description is often repeated throughout the book.
A leather bound book that bursts into flames when opened and extinguishes itself when closed. The book itself is completely fireproof.
A translation manual that teaches the basics for a long lost language. The guide assists the reader in translating basic words and phrases from the lost language into a commonly known language. This manual has significant values in archeological and research circles.
A bible that contains the founding texts of a now extinct religion that was wiped out long ago. This tome chronicles the origins of a murderous and wild sect that broke off from a popular, but now dead, religion. It gives notes on famous individuals this sect claims to have killed, their method in doing so and gives small insight into where more information about this sect may be.
A humble prayer-book bound in homespun cloth. Even with all your knowledge and sophistication, these simple hymns still have an almost supernatural power to soothe your troubled mind.
The Book of The Keeper of The World: A yellow book that is almost as bright as the sun itself. A bloody skeleton is on the cover with a text in an unreadable arcane language, presumably the title. Eating pages of this makes something in the world just disappear out of everyone's mind, a nothingness filling the place it used to be.
A reprint of a banned book, the last copy thought destroyed decades ago.
A ratty journal overflowing with loose sheets of yellowed paper. They are filled with maddened scrawl and diagrams and calculations and degenerate ranting.
A heavy book filled with Holy Scripture from the Loregiver and proclamations of Fate.
A holy text containing the sacred oaths of the first paladins from each paladin order in the multiverse, listing those of Good alignment as examples to strive for while warning against falling to the dark temptations of those who made their oaths for personal gain or other dark desires.
A book containing a list of artifacts designed for dark purposes, primarily those associated with Evil deities, as well as instructions on how to destroy these items. Several items on this list have already been crossed off, presumably destroyed by previous holders of this book.
A large tome that contains what is likely the largest repository of knowledge on healing salves in existence. It lists out materials, costs, where to find each ingredient, and how to combine these ingredients. There is virtually no ailment that cannot be cured by at least one of these restorative mixtures should the text prove accurate.
A small prayerbook that contains a single long incantation that can be used to contact a celestial who specializes in helping unfortunate souls tricked into a contract with a devil find a way out of their unfair bargains.
Book of Ashur: An arcane tome, bound in ancient dragon hide that contains much wisdom on the conjuring and subjugation of spells.
Liber Noctus: A decrepit tome that bristles with dark secrets and eldritch powers. Reading from the grimoire summons dark thoughts and grim deeds.
A blessed tome containing tales of ancient valour, glory, and self-sacrifice are bound to inspire those of noble heart to greater deeds.
A large book, bound in human skin according to the note tied to it, supposedly it was owned by an ancient necromancer during the age of thunder but its impossible to open as the spirits bound by it will lash out at the carrier. At the bottom it reads that it's currently on loan from Candlekeep.
A thick, heavy leather-bound book that contains illustrations and descriptions of over 3000 different kind of animals, plants, fungi, and minerals that can be used as alchemical ingredients, and how to safely collect, preserve, and store them. It was written by a renowned dark elf alchemist and explorer in the north lands. He spent decades studying and experimenting with the various creatures and plants that inhabit that environment, and compiled his findings and recipes in this book.
A worn-out leather book that has a map of the southern land on its cover. It contains detailed descriptions and directions on how to find and harvest rare and expensive alchemical ingredients that grow in remote, dangerous or hidden locations in the southern land.
A green book that has a dwarven hammer as symbol on its cover. It contains detailed secret information on how to use dwarven alchemy, with a specialized focus on creating oils and elixirs to mix into liquid metal alloys during the forging of weapons and armor.
An old yellowish book that has an elegant symbol on its cover. It was written by a legendary elven alchemist who mastered the art of creating healing potions, over the course of more than half a millennia of dedicated focus.
A collection of slim volumes on a variety of topics, including a registry of the nobility, City Watch commanders, and other notable citizens. Blank pages, a vial of ink, a pen. A number of interesting maps.
A single tome that is a combined multi-volumed summa of unified theory of arcane & divine magic, mechanical physics, psionics, and the cosmos.
An old, small, leather-bound, time-worn book with a goat’s head tooled into its cover. The leather is badly foxed and the pages are barely readable. If studied carefully it seems to be the journal of a fiendish cult.
A sketchbook half-filled with disturbingly accurate anatomical studies of various people, the copper plates that cover it etched with a pleasingly abstract rendering of a human heart.
A strange esoteric translation manual that teaches the basics for a long lost language. The guide assists the reader in translating basic words and phrases from the lost language into a commonly known language. This manual has significant values in archeological and research circles.
A hand-written guide by a purportedly self-taught monk on how to manifest and nurture ki powers. Although the information is not grounded in traditional aesthetic principals, anyone with knowledge of ki will recognize some validity to the methods being discussed. It is from an unknown author.
A religious text of an extinct cult that was wiped out long ago. This tome chronicles the origins of a murderous and wild sect that broke off from a popular, but now dead, religion. It gives notes on famous individuals this sect claims to have killed, their method in doing so and gives small insight into where more information about this sect may be.
A bound set of written texts, recording the beliefs of a famous lone wanderer and philosopher. The individual is well-known throughout the land for his beliefs and exploits but it was previously unknown that he had personally committed any of these things down on writing.
A book of spells with particularly elaborate verbal components written in an unknown but important-looking script. Arcane PC's can determine that only one or two minor spells actually work. Extremely close inspection will reveal that the rest of the "incantations" and "magic words" are actually disguised and encoded reports from a deep-cover spy
A worn, leather-bound journal filled with notes and sketches, offering insights into the daily life of its previous owner. There are many blank pages. Reading from the journal causes miniature illusions to appear for others showing the details of the event written, whether truthful or fanciful.
An alchemical codex containing the formulae for various poisons.
A dusty, ancient tome filled with arcane knowledge and forbidden secrets, written in a strange serpentine language and illuminated with intricate flowing illustrations.
A notebook that contains private notes from a psychiatrist about a patient. The first two pages are banal and clinical; by the fifth, they are inscrutable ramblings.
An identifiable book with a dozen assorted silver nails impaling it. The nails look disorderly and haphazardly hammered, with many bent in strange angles. The book is constantly wet, and the title is illegible.
An arcane spellbook that doesn’t seem to have belonged to a single wizard, bearing many different hands and styles across undoubtedly centuries. Many pages are damaged, arcane scribblings made illegible by time and deterioration. On the pages that remain, it seems that many of the spells appear modified in some way.
A well-worn and obviously fake booklet on how to talk to ghosts.
A bound journal filled with sketches of plants and animals.
A medical journal written in a dead language. It's filled with diagrams and drawings of medical dissections of inhuman alien creatures.
The Book of Fate's Mercies: A book that details incidents where people were saved from death by random chance. For example, a barking dog caused someone to walk just a little quicker down the street, which moved them out of the path of a stampeding horse. The last story in the book is about you, potentially causing you to be extremely aware and reactive but utterly paranoid and agoraphobic.
An inconspicuous diary of a young girl named Fyla. At a young age Fyla's talents allowed her to see into the abyss and corrupted her mind. She wrote in detail about the monsters under her bed and her fears of what awaited her when they would finally come for her on her 18th birthday.
The Book of Wisdom: A tome that contains a collection of sayings, stories, poems, and hymns from every known culture, religion, and philosophy. New entries appear at random, as new Wisdoms are collected and recorded by other disciples carrying a copy of the Book of Wisdom.
A spellbook made from high quality blank parchment is covered in tiny runes. When one of these small inscriptions is pressed the parchment changes color.
Tome Of The Spellblade: A soft-covered leather bound treatise containing writings describing, in the most basic terms possible, methods of magical fighting. Even so, the material is fairly dense and requires definition and reiteration of various terms and ideas. Fortunately, it also contains many detailed diagrams.
Fearful Codex of Ancient Wisdom: A weighty volume bound in pale, scaled leather of unknown origin. This magical tome contains a wealth of knowledge both mundane and esoteric, and is inhabited by an archival spirit that will direct the reader to their desired content on request. Unfortunately, the spirit has undergone a great deal of trauma over the millennia and the "fearful" part of the title is now literal. Attempting to simply open the codex and read normally will reveal nothing but blank pages, with perhaps a fleeting glimpse of text slithering away to pages deeper in the book. Only through persuasion can you access the codex. The book has definite dislikes, some of which follow: Being read by firelight is terrifying - paper burns! Natural light is better, but being read outside in the weather is undignified and risky. Magical illumination is best, preferably indoors and someplace quiet. Any kind of liquid nearby is alarming - ink runs and paper is ruined! Don't even think about eating while you peruse the codex. The book doesn't really like to travel either and would prefer to tucked away safely in a library somewhere when not in use. It enjoys the company of other books but isn't fond of other magical tomes, even non-sentient ones. It's also really, really phobic about the number eight, and invariably uses constructions like "two cubed" or "nine less one" in its own text when needed.

palisade 32
i have two main thoughts about this episode. one is the role of mortality across the divine cycle and in palisade specifically. the other is FLASH NAUTILUS
there’s been very little information established about the actual physical ecosystems and land relationships on palisade. flash nautilus opens up SO MUCH possibility. you’re telling me there are gigantic airborne plasma blasting cephalopods on this planet?? fantastic. 10/10.
probably it’s the round-shelled modern kind of nautilus, but i’d love to imagine it as an endocerid nautiloid, a cambrian clade that had long pointed shells. this would make them very aerodynamic!
don’t want to get too into the longstanding speculative biology argument of “how do they fly”, but in this case i do think the “chemical reaction producing lighter-than-air gases in an internal organ” proposal is probably sufficient. flash nautilus shells are structured membrane-bound gas chambers… plasma blasts generate gas and some thrust…
considering the probable scavenging behavior of flash nautiluses (due to their large size and inefficient movement strategy), the plasma blasts likely originated as—and still serve as—a defense mechanism. (comparable to earth cephalopod defense mechanisms like shooting ink.)
lastly, if giant flying plasma nautiluses are on the table, i think we should consider comparable cambrian fauna. giant flying plasma anomalocaris. herpetogaster colonies. land wiwaxia
this has been speculative biology corner! tbc whenever there is any more biology to think about.
anyway, on to the other topic i have in mind: mortality in palisade.
i don’t feel like i have an articulated position about this, as much as a handful of things to line up next to each other. but the divine cycle has historically been concerned with control over death—setting fronts of conflict on undeath as violation, the right to die, forced continuation, the right to change. and so pc death is always going to alter that thematic fabric in some way.
all the recent pc death/flirting with death was discussed a bit this episode—figure taking number of the beast, brnine’s new hook about borrowed time—and phrygian just died (/sacrificed themself, but either way, departed) to prevent further death—a lot of that going around.
i was thinking about this during the stellar combustor arc too, and one thought that came up there was that the blue channel might gain an edge through their acceptance of their own mortality, as opposed to the principality’s desire for immortality/fear of death.
dahlia didn’t expect to die. gucci didn’t think brnine would survive and helped them anyway. figure feels precarious in their third chance at life.
i’m still not sure how i want to frame this—the conclusion i don’t want to back myself into (and also don’t think is being implied) is that self-sacrifice is the necessary condition for victory.
but there’s the argument that death gives meaning to life, in the way that all worlds end… idk. thinking about it. will have more to say about this if/when figure bites it.
a couple other loose thoughts:
SO EXCITED for more cori/elle conflict. it’s the first time they’ve met since cori got her new mech!
standing alone on a rooftop in a hostile city, cracked and affected and tracked, is so extremely noir sleuth. all it’s missing is some dreary rain… except it’s dawn, and this is baseline-c, and noir happens in the cracks in the perfect skyline.
new perspective is also just sick as shit. fantastic move.
felt very silly and fun to have more and more wildly different enemies popping up in this fight—can’t wait to see how messy it gets with dust in the mix lmao. past and present and future collide!

Dav spoilers below the cut!! (Up to just before leaving for the anderfels)
Okay I've gotten off for today so I wanna ramble a little bit about my playthrough so far!!
I am geniuenly adoring it so far! Alot of the problems I have with inquisition are non-existent, the combat is fun, the characters are likeable. Sadly the purple rook options aren't as much of an asshole as I would like (purple Hawke you will be missed) but they are nice! The writing so far has been solid imo.
I really like that the cameo characters aren't taking up too much space. While I do get excited to see them, I don't want them overshadowing the new characters, like they kinda did in previous games. The cameos are also way sooner than I was expecting!!
So far I've only had one instance of "that is NOT what I meant to say" with the dialogue wheel which I count as a win (when I recruited lucanis I said 'ill keep an eye on you' thinking it was out of concern 😭 that may have just been a skill issue on my end tho. I reloaded that save so fast). I also really like the romance dialogue options so far. They aren't so overwhelming cringe that it makes me wanna curl up and die inside (I am staring directly at you Hawke who SAYS THAT to a man who's BOYFRIEND JUST DIED). They all feel very nice and flirty in a way that isn't in your face. I am also really REALLY liking the companion writing so far. All of the characters are charming and I'm already more invested in them than I was in the inquisiton cast sorry 😭
While Rook does talk a lot on their own, so far it all feels very in line with what Revari would say. While I do miss being able to control everything the PC says, ik logically we'll never get a dragon age game like that again so it's not something I was expecting. Very happy nothing feels glaringly "they would not fucking say that"
I I thought the lack of worldstate choice was going to be more glareingly obvious but tbh i kinda forget about it for most the playthrough. It still sucks that there isn't more worldstate options, but yk I can't change that
Lucanis is already really growing on me!!! He's just a silly little guy and I am a SUCKER for them. Born to be a chef forced to be an assassin frfr...
Neve gallus obviously has my whole heart if you didn't know. The longer she's on screen the more I love her. She hasn't left my party since Bellaras recruitment quest.
Very interested in Bellara. For a hot second I thought her brother was going to be Felassan so I was mildly disappointed that it wasn't 😭 although ultimately making it a new character is a better narrative choice.
I LOVE that you can encourage Lace's abilities!!! I have a feeling that how you tell her to channel her abilities (whether through joy or through fear) is going to affect the outcome of her story... Also love that if you show optimism about her abilities she also shows excitement about them
Varric and Rooks relationship is so sweet to me!!! I mean he calls them kid you guys should know I was gonna be a sucker for it. While I know that's probably annoying for older Rooks, it works for Revari. I'm also very glad he has a distinct different relationship with Rook than he did with Hawke and The Inquisitor. He's clearly very fond of them and it makes me happy idk. Also the sheer fucking difference between the way he acts towards the Inquisitor (even one he's friendly with!!) and rook is so funny. Inky really is just his ex boss huh 😭
I've only talked to Solas twice so far but I'm already more invested in his and Rooks dynamic than I was with him in the Inquisitor sorry 😭 I didn't romance him so he didn't really do it for me in Inquistion, but I'm low-key looking forward to seeing him again. His little jabs in the second talk after you "exchange verbal spars" is so fun, and I think it really hammers in the "Solas reflects back the people he interacted with". He did it with the Inquisitor, and is doing it again with Rook, but it's SO much more interesting to me in this game so far idk. Maybe it's because he's responding to specific comments? Idk Revari is a bit of a shithead so. I don't think Revari hates Solas, but they are a bit wary of him.
The voice acting has been very solid so far as well!! Nothing that's glarely bad to me at least. I also really like some of the facial animations; while some of them can feel a bit flat in general conversation, some of them are REALLY good. There was a bit where Dorian started snarking and he curled his lip. And another where Rook opened their mouth like they were going to talk but didn't. Idk the facial animations are REALLY standing out to me. This is so much better than the previous games I am not even over exaggerating. Dragon age "Every character wears an ugly sneer all the time" Inquisiton you will not be missed... Obviously it's because the technology is better but it is really really obvious how much attention went into the faces I am here for it
The combat is so fucking fun. Ik it won't be everyones cup of tea but I am having a BLAST. It didn't take me very long to get the hang of and it's very satisfying to play with.
I am also fucking LOVING how relevant your backstory is!!! Like yes!!! I am a shadow dragon!!!! There's so many additional dialogue about it even just in casual conversations! I never felt like the game forgot about it. Rooks connection to their faction is great and I love the fact that they know people and people know them. Shadow dragon rook ily 🫶
I really like how much it feels like this game remembers what you've done. From Lucanis remembering your preferred drinks (Revari likes their coffee STRONG) to Varric feeling like he let you down after you encouraged him, so far it really feels like what I'm doing is sticking and that makes me SO fucking happy.
Final thing!!! This game looks absolutely fucking gorgeous I keep getting blown away by the views. I do wish I could zoom my camera out a bit more just to take everything in bc it's SO big I love it!!! So far it is geniuenly meeting my expectations and I am SO FUCKING RELIEVED. I have been so worried it was gonna be dogshit for WEEKS

Eric Concerned Apa Barone announced the 1.6 patch of Stardew Valley would give humans mayonnaisen. The announcement didn’t give further details about the effects this would have on play.
ith more than fifteen years of experience now works as the executive vice president at The Rocks Seven Buck Production. He actively contributes to the creation of famous concerts for The Rock’ and holds a key backstage role when The This was the igniter of discussions among those backstage talent aimed at getting established with standards, and they said that double standard applies. The Rock is a big name in WWE and Hollywood. People wonder whether he can use profanity words even though wrestlers are too much trouble
Heres the official update note line reveal concerning mayonnaise. It didn’t know how much energy a player would receive for drinks with these condiments. Before, most forms of it hadn’t been eaten yet. Void Mayonnaise is the only exception with no more than one exception besides all these forms and that was not any better served in the past few days from time to time when food would have been made for them or eaten today alone (If ingested, it would sap energy away.)
Before the announcement, mayonnaise is already an essential item in Stardew Valley. Because this is because he liked most of the people in playing that game and doesn’t take much effort to get it,
Marriage has been fully made illegal in stardew valley in the new update unless your character guzzles down enough mayonnaise to liken themselves to a near exploding deer tick. How unsightly. The only thing you can craft with the blasted thing is kraft macaronis newest “Mayochup” concoction. The very idea makes gamers want to wretch. Truly this is the end of gaming as we know it. Shameful. Just shameful.
The recent appearance of Rocks on Smackdown entailted an entertaining rock concert segment, which included news regarding a potential overrun and other events. A report found that the length of segments affected an all-time event involving Latino World Order and Legadón de Fantásm. However, Gewirtz used the Social Media platform X to refute making them an ideal gift. You need a Mayonnaise machine, that you can start making in level 2 of Farming; copper bar and Earth Crystal is the main source of raw materials found in these products. Those who are upset about getting it people like Sam, Sebastian and Caroline along with Jas.
Concerned Apa shared multiple details about the update, prior to its debut. In other words, we know that old saves will still be safe. Even before she is married, her new partner wouldn’t be able to sleep all day long because you didn’ feel free of working for an extended period.
Stardew Valley is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Switch. The latest version of 1.6 is going to begin for PCs on March 19 2024.

GarVez Fic: Someone To Watch Over Me
Author: Parisian Nicole
Warning: Adult subject matter such as non-consensual acts
Summary: Garcia has a scary visitor and turns to Luke for protection and help. It's sucky but I am literally typing this off the top of my head. I have a general idea of what I want to do here, but it may change. Hopefully, my muse will keep the ideas coming and I can finish this one up quickly But don't know yet. This idea just came to me while I am at my desk working my 9-5 job (thankfully I work from home and have my personal PC desk right next to my work desk).
*****
GarVez Fic: Some One To Watch Over Me
Chapter One:
At first, he wasn’t sure he had heard anything, and he lay in bed on his back scowling up at the ceiling as he listened. Even Roxy, who slept at the foot of the bed, sat up and stared at the open bedroom door as if waiting for something. Then it came again, a low almost tentative knock at his front door. Roxy, growled as she jumped from the bed and waited for her master to command her next move. Luke Alvez’s senses were on high alert. As he threw back the covers and moved his legs over the edge of the bed, he glanced at the alarm clock on his bedside table, and it read 2:27am. He moved to the bedroom door to make his way out to the living room with Roxy right at his side ready to follow any command he gave. Once he reached his door and looked through the peephole, his early weariness about who was knocking on his door at that time of morning, instantly morphed into fear and great concern when he saw who stood on the other side of the door holding a cat and with a blanket wrapped around them. Luke hurriedly yanked the door open to Penelope Garcia, who looked up at him with wide wet, and red eyes.
“Penelope?” He spoke out in a tone that suggested that he wasn’t believing his own eyes, and that she was actually standing there.
“Hi, Luke,” She responded with a small smile. “Sorry, I know it’s late…” He cut off her words by reaching out and gently grasping her arm and pulling her into his apartment.
“Get in here Chica,” He spoke softly to her. “And you are always welcome here no matter what the time is,” He tacked on as he closed and locked his front door and then turned to find her squatting and giving Roxy love as Sergio rubbed up against Roxy’s legs in a show of affection. He smiled warmly at them, it always made him happy to see the tight bond between Penelope, Roxy and even Sergio, which they all had right from their first meeting. It was something he had never seen with anyone else. Roxy hadn’t even taken to Lisa in the same way he did with Penelope. Roxy usually stayed out of Lisa’s way for the most part and only allowed a pat to her head from Lisa, before she’d move away from her. With Penelope Roxy stuck close and would try to elicit pats, rubs, and scratches from Penelope. “What’s wrong, did something happen?” Luke probed and Penelope stood back upright and turned to face him though she kept her eyes locked down to the dog who still stood right at her side.
“I’m … Uhm … I’m not sure,” She began. “Something spooked me at my apartment, and you live so close by, so I came here,” She stated, and Luke moved to her and placed a comforting hand on her arm and steered her to his couch.
“Hey, I’m glad you came to me. Come on, sit down,” He coaxed, and she nodded, smiled, and took a seat on the couch. Then Luke sat right down beside her, so close their knees touched. “Now, tell me what spooked you,” She dropped her eyes down to his right hand which sat atop her blanketed knee.
“I was asleep, and I felt something … touching me,” She began her story and these words filled Luke with worry and also anger, but he remained silent to let her finish. “I opened my eyes and as you know I am visually challenged so everything is blurry without my glasses. But I thought I saw the outline of a man standing beside my bed,” She looked up at Luke as she said this, her lips trembled slightly, and her eyes filled with tears. Luke’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he gulped down his rage, and his jaw clenched. “I was so scared, but I scrambled for my glasses on my bedside table and to turn on the lamp. God, it was like I was made of molasses, and I was moving so slow and then I knocked over the lamp,” She closed her eyes, shook her head a bit as if to remove an unpleasant thought. Then she took a deep breath and opened her eyes again and continued her story. “I finally got my glasses on, I picked up the lamp, and I turned it on, but there was no one there. My bedroom door was still shut, and I always lock it. Derek always told me to make sure I locked my bedroom door in case of any intruders, that it would give me some time to get a weapon or to climb out the window if I could.”
“I agree that is a great idea,” Luke concurred with a nod.
“Yeah, well, the door was still locked so no one came through or back out the door, I know I would have seen it, I would have known. But there was no one there when I turned on the light. It was just me and Sergio.”
“That’s good, but it still spooked you and that’s totally understandable,” Luke spoke in a consoling tone.
“That wasn’t really what spooked me,” She went on. “I mean I would have just chalked it up as a nightmare but then I noticed something.”
“What?” His brows furrowed as he looked at her and she couldn’t meet his eyes.
“This is not how I envisioned this happening,” She mumbled low, but he still caught it but could tell she hadn’t intended for him to hear, so he pretended he hadn’t. Penelope pushed the blanket she had around her shoulders down. And Luke couldn’t stop his eyes from appreciatively raking over the short night shirt she wore which had a cartoony unicorn with a rainbow on it. It brought an endearing smile to his lips which instantly faded when she pulled up the hem of the night shirt to expose her porcelain legs. Luke swallowed the lump that was suddenly lodged in his throat and willed away the arousal that he could feel stirring within him. He silently cursed himself for this reaction for he knew there was nothing remotely sexual about the situation but also knew it was a completely normal reaction as well. When Penelope parted her thighs and showed him what scared her it was like he was doused with a bucket of ice water in the middle of a blizzard. “Are those handprints?” Penelope asked through trembling lips and Luke’s own eyes enlarged in shock and then quickly became red and wet from his growing rage. He could see that her inner thighs had clear bruising and those bruises were definitely handprints. He tried to remain calm even though he wanted to race to her apartment and tear it apart to find the person who had done this. But she had come to him, not JJ, not Emily, not Tara. And yes, his apartment was the closest to hers only minutes away, but he knew without a doubt that that had not been the reason she had come to him. She came because she was scared, and she knew both Luke and Roxy would protect her, always. “I don’t know how those bruises got there, but … Luke, are they handprints?” She asked him again and he looked up into her eyes and could see that she was holding on to hope that they weren’t, and that she was just imagining everything, and it was in fact just a nightmare.
“We should get you to the hospital,” Luke replied as he reached out and grasped her left hand into his right hand and gave her hand a squeeze. Penelope nodded her head as she snapped her eyes shut and freed the tears just at their brims, while the realization of what had happened, what was happening finally washed over her. Someone had really been in her bedroom and that someone had touched her. She wanted to scream at the thought of it and to the knowledge that she had been touched in such an intimate way. Then she became filled with a near overwhelming desire to bathe but knew she couldn’t until she was checked by a doctor, and they did a rape kit. “I will take you, unless you’d prefer JJ or…” She opened her eyes and tightened her grip on his hand at his words as she vehemently shook her head to this idea.
“No, I want you to go with me, and I don’t want the others to know. Please, Luke, please don’t tell anyone else,” She begged him, and it broke his heart to see the desperation, fear, and shame in her eyes.
“I won’t say a word to anyone, and I’ll be right here with you every step of the way,” He spoke these words as he lifted his free hand up and cupped her cheek. “Hey, you’re safe now,” She nodded to his words because she knew it was the truth. “And Penelope, I promise you I will find who did this and I will make them pay. Do you hear me? I swear they are going to pay for touching you,” Luke declared, and he didn’t even realize that his own angry tears had slipped out and had rolled down his cheek until she had reached up and wiped them away. Then he sniffed, righted himself, and stood up from the couch. “Let’s go grab you a pair of my sweatpants to put on before we head out,” He offered and then waited for her to stand and follow him. Penelope slowly stood from the couch and then she lurched herself at Luke, where she wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her cheek against his chest while she squeezed her eyes shut. Luke instinctively enveloped her in his welcomed embrace. He held her snuggly against him and buried his nose in her thick tresses and breathed her in, as his eyes drifted closed in his contentment.
“Thank you, Luke,” She whispered to him and in reply he simply kissed the top of her head and tightened his hold.
More to come….

Younger Millennial?!?!?!
Try Millennial, period.
Oldest of the "older Millennials" here (born in 1981)!
I'm definitely young enough that playing video games has been a lifelong hobby of mine (I used to play "BC's Quest for Tire" on my C64 computer when I was 4!).
And my Gen X cousin (born in 1972) has been gaming on various consoles and computers since the mid 70s (he started with the Atari)!
I've played video games on C64, Atari, NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear, SNES, then pretty much abandoned consoles to move to PC gaming (never been a fan of the Nintendo 64), until the introduction of the Nintendo Wii reignited my interest in consoles for a bit, then pretty much returned to strictly PC gaming (might eventually give in to the temptation of getting myself a VR set, though...).
A lot of my friends, currently aged 35 to 55, have been lifelong gamers as well!
Right now (2024), that age group roughly forms about a quarter of the gaming population in the US!
Tumblr media
source
The dominant age demographic for video game players is Millennials...
...followed by Gen X (not Zoomers)!
So, if you believe that moving away from that 44 years old mark (the age where Gen X is currently starting) makes you more likely, as a Millennial, to have taken up video gaming as a lifelong hobby, think again!
I'm an old enough Millennial that I remember parents letting kids watch virtually any movie on TV without being preoccupied by the ratings (ex: my father thought watching "Jaws" with a 5-year-old, while suddenly physically grabbing her and going "Rwaaaar!" every single time the shark showed up or "almost showed up" on screen - just to hear her blood curling screams of sheer terror and keep her "on the edge of her seat" - was the funniest form of entertainment EVER!), and a huge bunch of kids from school owning either a Sega Genesis or Nintendo Entertainment System at home at some point, because it was an easy way to keep younger children occupied on their own after school until the parents finally came back from work (the kids that didn't have one would just go squat at the houses of those that did).
A lot of the older Millennials and younger Gen Xers were raised on (and sometimes almost "raised by") video games, often without the parents being as concerned about the way too much time spent in front of a screen, and/or the level of violence contained in those games, might affect their children's development as one might expect them to be today.
But I agree, our beef does tend to be with The Computer, and The Computer only!
And if The Computer's unhappy, well they just had to do a better job of raising us!
They're not my Commodore 64, and they can't tell me what to do!

Exploring the Different Types of Cosmetic Dental Treatments Available in Farmington Hills
Cosmetic Dentist in Farmington Hills has become a vital aspect of dental health, focusing not only on the aesthetics of a smile but also on its functionality. In Farmington Hills, patients are increasingly turning to cosmetic dentists to enhance their smiles and boost their confidence. This article delves deep into the various types of cosmetic dental treatments available in this vibrant community, highlighting their benefits and the expertise of local cosmetic dentists, particularly Dr. Chetana Karanth of Pearl Dental PC.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Essence of Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a range of procedures designed to improve the appearance of teeth, gums, and smiles. While some individuals may view these treatments as mere enhancements, they play a crucial role in fostering overall oral health. The integration of cosmetic procedures with general dentistry ensures that patients not only achieve beautiful smiles but also maintain optimal dental health. Dr. Karanth emphasizes this holistic approach at her practice in Farmington Hills, where she employs sophisticated techniques to preserve the natural structure of teeth during restorations.
The growing trend towards cosmetic dentistry highlights a significant shift in public perception. Patients are no longer waiting until they have serious dental issues to seek treatment. Instead, they are proactively addressing cosmetic concerns such as discoloration, gaps, and misalignment early on. This proactive approach allows for a healthier mouth and a more engaging smile, making cosmetic dentistry a valuable investment in one's self-image.
Popular Cosmetic Dental Treatments in Farmington Hills
1. Teeth Whitening: Brightening Your Smile
One of the most sought-after cosmetic treatments is teeth whitening, a procedure that effectively removes stains and discoloration from teeth. In Farmington Hills, Dr. Karanth offers both in-office and at-home whitening options. The in-office procedure utilizes advanced bleaching agents that can lighten teeth several shades in just one visit. This immediate result is often preferred by those looking for quick transformations, especially before significant events.
For those who prefer the convenience of at-home treatments, custom-made whitening trays are provided. These trays allow patients to apply a professional-grade whitening gel in the comfort of their own homes. The gradual whitening process is effective, ensuring that the results are both natural and long-lasting. This dual approach to teeth whitening makes it accessible for everyone, regardless of their schedules or preferences.
2. Dental Veneers: A Versatile Solution
Dental veneers are another popular cosmetic option, particularly for individuals seeking to address multiple aesthetic concerns simultaneously. These thin shells of porcelain are bonded to the front surface of teeth, effectively covering imperfections such as chips, cracks, gaps, and discoloration. What makes veneers particularly appealing is their ability to transform the entire appearance of a smile.
At Pearl Dental PC, Dr. Karanth customizes veneers to match the shape, size, and color of a patient’s natural teeth. This level of personalization ensures that the final result looks seamless and natural. The longevity of veneers is also a significant advantage; with proper care, they can last for many years, making them a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to enhance their smile.
3. Composite Bonding: Repairing Flaws with Precision
Composite bonding is an effective solution for restoring broken, chipped, or discolored teeth. This procedure involves applying a special composite resin to the affected areas, allowing for a precise and aesthetic repair. One of the key benefits of composite bonding is that it requires minimal tooth alteration, preserving the majority of the natural tooth structure.
Dr. Karanth often recommends composite bonding for patients who want to address minor imperfections without undergoing more invasive procedures. The result is a smooth and natural-looking restoration that blends seamlessly with the surrounding teeth. Moreover, the procedure can typically be completed in a single visit, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
4. Inlays and Onlays: Strengthening Damaged Teeth
Inlays and onlays, sometimes referred to as indirect fillings, are a durable solution for more extensive dental damage. These restorations are crafted from porcelain or composite materials and are used to repair teeth that have suffered decay or damage. The difference between inlays and onlays lies in the extent of coverage; inlays are used for internal damage, while onlays cover the entire top of the tooth.
What sets inlays and onlays apart from traditional fillings is their ability to provide strength and aesthetics. Dr. Karanth utilizes state-of-the-art technology to design these restorations, ensuring a perfect fit and a natural look. This attention to detail not only restores functionality but also enhances the overall appearance of the smile.
5. Dental Implants: A Permanent Solution for Missing Teeth
For patients dealing with missing teeth, dental implants represent one of the most revolutionary advancements in cosmetic dentistry. These titanium posts are surgically placed into the jawbone, serving as artificial tooth roots. Once healed, they can support crowns, bridges, or dentures, providing a permanent and stable solution.
The benefits of dental implants extend beyond aesthetics. They help to preserve the jawbone, preventing the bone loss that typically occurs after tooth loss. Dr. Karanth is dedicated to ensuring that her patients receive the highest quality of care throughout the implant process, from initial consultation to the final placement of the restoration. This comprehensive approach ensures successful outcomes and satisfied patients.
Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist in Farmington Hills
Selecting a cosmetic dentist is a significant decision that can impact the quality of care received and the results achieved. In Farmington Hills, patients have access to numerous options, but finding the right fit is crucial. It is essential to choose a cosmetic dentist who possesses the necessary skills, experience, and a solid reputation in the community.

04x41 - An Old Fashioned Term
TW: Suicide
Taffy and Viv arrive at a house to be told by an elderly lady that a young lady appears to have committed suicide in the top flat of the next house. Taffy and Viv enter the victim, Jenny's, room and find an elderly man, Mr Kelly, wiping the girls mouth with a cloth. They ask him to wait outside the room whilst they check her over. Viv is concerned that he was cleaning up after sexually assaulting the victims corpse
Jim is amazed that Tosh has been a DC for 12 years. Tosh tells him he's actually been in the job for 15 years in total as he spent three years as a PC. Tosh asks Jim if he's been on a suicide job before. Jim says he's done one or two and Tosh says he's done many and they make him have lots of questions and also make him angry at the waste of life and how some poor soul can feel that that is it.
Mike is surprised to find Ted in the CID office as he thought he'd been landed with the suicide job. Ted explains he palmed it off on Jim and Tosh as soon as he could and turns on the charm to book a table for that night. Mike smirks and tells him he's got it bad and 'as my old mum said, it'll all end in tears!' "People are beginning to talk, Ted."
Tumblr media
Viv goes out to meet Tosh and Jim and explains that an 18 year old female appears to have gassed herself and was found by a man who claims he came home from work, smelt the gas and then went up to investigate.
Ted is worried a suspect on another case will get suspicious if given bail. Frank tells him to stop thinking like the suspect has a brain and to think like the suspect actually would. He'd be so happy to have been released that he'd not think too deeply about it. Frank bets him that the suspect will lead them directly to another villain that Frank has been after for a while. As soon as he sees Christine, Ted gives in to Frank's idea and follows Christine down the corridor, telling her of the table he'd booked. He knows he broke their rule of keeping it professional at work but claims thats the effect she has on him. Christine smiles and agrees to meet him there.
Tumblr media
Tosh finds Jenny's suicide note which makes for pretty bleak reading. Jim is horrified. "She's only a kid." Viv and Taffy explain what they saw when they arrived and are suspicious of Mr Kelly. Tosh asks them to find her typewriter which confuses the officers. The note was typed - she must have one somewhere.
Frank goes to see Christine. He's obviously jealous and insists he came for a 'friendly' chat despite seeing how busy she is. He then tells her to drop Ted because she can do better. She tells him to mind his own business and says he will - but at the first sign of it affecting Ted's work he'll make it his business. "Inspector?" She calls as he leaves. "Shove your business."
Taffy finds the typewriter in the bedroom so Tosh asks him to find some paper and type - using a pencil - the letters R D and L. He's going to get SOCCO to fingerprint it but wants to check something. He also asks him to check for a heater in her bedroom and Taffy says he has and there isn't one as she'd moved it into the living room. Viv asks if Tosh knows something that they don't and Tosh admits that he doesn't know something but feels something instead.
Dashers sits with Alec and Tom and gossips about Tosh, Ted and Christine. "You're like a bunch of old washerwomen!" Alec grins and clarifies what he really wants to know. "Is he giving her some or what?" "Subtle as ever, Alec!" Tom laughs.
Tumblr media
Jim and Ted accompany Jenny's body to the mortuary. He charms the mortician and asks her to run the full works because there's something he's not happy about. He agrees Jenny died through asphyxia but he doesn't agree that it was a suicide. She agrees to run the full works. "If I wasn't a married man with five kids I'd buy you a drink." "And if I wasn't a married woman with three kids, I'd let you!"
Ted leaves the magistrates court and joins Mike in a car. They wait for their suspect to get in his taxi and follow it. Mike suspects the man will do a runner.
Mr Kelly gives a witness statement to Tosh and Jim. Kelly is a hospital porter of 10 years. Jim asks why he touched Jenny's body and asks if he touched her whilst she was alive. Kelly insists that's dirty and they can't ask him that. Jim asks how he knew she was dead and he says he just did because he'd seen them daily at work. When asked what he did, Kelly says he opened the windows, turned off the gas and then went next door to ask the neighbour to call the police. Jim asks why he didn't ring from Jenny's phone and Kelly says he didn't know she had one in the kitchen. Tosh asks how, if he didn't know she had one, did he know the phone was in the kitchen. Kelly covers by saying he went back to Jenny's and had a look around the flat but can't say why because he was in shock as you don't find bodies every day. Jim points out that his occupation means he sees multiple bodies daily and has done for 10 years. Jim asks again if that's why he touched her and Kelly snaps that Jim is filthy and that he didn't. Kelly starts to cry when asked if he'd been in trouble with the police before. Tosh leans over him and asks if he can type. Kelly says he never has typed in his life and insists he wants to go home because he can't be held there! Tosh says a few more questions and he can go home and that it's all routine.
Jim joins uniform in the rec room and tells Yorkie he can't make it to bowling. Alec and Bob join them and they talk about the suicide case. Jim explains that that case is why he can't make it to bowling because Tosh thinks it's a murder and he's asking Brownlow for permission to hold Kelly for 12 hours whilst they investigate. Yorkie laughs that 'Tosh is a right one' and asks if he ever changes his shirts. "Regularly, once a week on a Monday." Jim answers. He reckons the fact that Tosh has been a DC for 12 years doesn't inspire confidence and that he's playing the field. Jim doesn't think someone can make another person lay down naked and still to be gassed. "Knock 'em out first!" Yorkie suggests but Jim says there are no marks on her and he leaves the room with Alec pondering his next pool shot.
Tumblr media
Charles asks Tosh to persuade him and Tosh reckons it's strange for a woman to bathe and then commit suicide. He adds that she'd moved the gas heater from her bedroom to her living room but 8 out of 10 people who commit nonviolent suicide chose the comfort of a bed. The note was definitely typed on the machine but when they checked the machine there weren't any fingerprints. The gas heater was obviously moved because of marks on the carpet but it was also wiped clean. He goes on to say that when Kelly appeared to be wiping the girl's mouth when Viv and Taffy arrived. It could have been to remove traces of anything he'd used to make her unconscious. He wants to hold Kelly until they get the full toxicology results. Frank asks about a motive and Tosh suggests that's an old-fashioned term.
Ted and Mike are still watching their suspect and Ted worries that he could be in the pub until closing time. "It's a waste of time." "It's only a waste of time because you've got one on tonight." Ted reminds Mike he's booked a table. Mike rolls his eyes and lets him go but wants him back by midnight. Ted promises he'll get a cab and go to the suspect's house if he's not there.
Tumblr media
Viv has been looking into Jenny's background. Her father has relocated to Canada. Her mother moved to Glasgow but has moved on without a forwarding address. Glasgow police are still looking for her. Jenny worked as a sales girl in a shoe store and was a happy-go-lucky girl who was good at her job and well liked. She had no regular boyfriend, didn't 'put it about' and preferred to go out with her friends. Jim says he's in the dark and Tosh says that's down to him. He saw exactly what Tosh did and accuses him of not looking properly. Tosh admits he doesn't know what the motive is though but asks what Jenny's motive was for committing suicide.
Ted arrives early looking like he hasn't slept. Tosh and Jim tell him that Mike is looking for him... and he's not a happy man.
The pathologist reports that Jenny died of suffocation from gas inhalation. 51 percent inhalation is enough for death and her results show levels of 91. She died between 6 and 8am and she hadn't been drinking. She had had intercourse around an hour of her death. Jim asked if it was forced and there was nothing that showed a struggle nor did she have DNA under her fingertips. That doesn't mean it was consenting, however. There were traces of chloroform found. It looks like Tosh has just discovered the motive.
Mike tells Ted to stuff it when he apologises to him. "That's the last time I cover for you!" Ted points out nothing happened and admits he blew it. Mike snaps that he never listens. Frank walks in and agrees, ordering Ted into his office. "Thanks a lot." Ted growls. "Never down to you is it! It's always someone else." Mike shouts after him.
Frank and Tosh confront Kelly with the findings. He tries to say he didn't do it but Frank tells him they found a fingerprint on one of Jenny's coins and that a chloroform bottle was found in the bin at his flat. Kelly insists it doesn't prove anything and Frank tells him they have a sample from inside Kelly and subtly signals for Tosh to play along like they have the results already. Kelly sobs and admits it but says he won't tell them why and that 'if they're so smart' they've got to work out why.
In the pub Jim admits that Tosh is very clever and that he should be a DS. Bob asks if he's asked Tosh why and Jim says he gives him a soppy grin and taps the side of his nose. He admits that Tosh is angry that he can't work out why the man did it. Bob tells him that it's understandable. If they don't learn why, they don't learn how to prevent it and they don't learn without the question 'why'?" He then leaves to head home because he's had enough of the question 'why?'
Sarge?" "Yeah?" "Why?"

I don't want to go down the easy route of "OP is wrong and is a a*hole" so... let's see.
Maybe what you do, dear asker, is a hobby. An artistic pursuit that gives you joy but you are not in it for the money.
It is fine, I also have them. I decorate things.
But I'm 31. What do I know about life?
What I do know that I have a "blue-collar" job that I hate because I need to create. I am an artist and I would love to have my passion as my job and to be paid for that... because I live in a society that requires you to have money to live and I have a family to support (+ many pets and we all know how demanding those little beasts are).
*A sad violin starts playing while I enter the "read more" link*
I work as an Over the Phone Interpreter. I'm very professional and the topics in the calls do not affect me (trust me some things had made my coworkers cry) still... sitting on my PC with the portal open and with a constant back-to-back flow of calls (now is a little less but I still have them) is devastating to me. I broke down in tears before or after my shift out of the blue, mostly at night so nobody can see me or in the shower for the same reason.
I don't enjoy anything now (mom likes to cook for me, but everything feels the same. I just eat because I'm hungry, not for enjoyment). So yeah... this is taking a toll on me.

My mom was super-concerned when I was doing this piece. Because I put A LOT of detailing in something that was supposed to be just a simple piece of painted wood to stick that broken Christmas' ornament. She loves it, of course... but as soon as I finished I told her "You know that Bettlejuice scene where Delia tells her husband 'I'm an artist, if you don't let me do what I want to this house I'll go mad and drag you down with me'? Well... I feel like that" and her answer was "Yeah, I thought so. That's why I left you alone while you were doing it".
I still do it. Every day from 1PM to 7PM I'm on the line and I add 2 hours of Overtime every time I can. (I used to work 8 hours + OT but due the lack of calls I was asked to reduce my time on the line).
I have a family to support: mom and an aunt. Both of them are over 50 so in my country, Argentina, nobody employs them anymore. Mom used to work in Walmart, she did it for almost 28 years, but due to our never-ending economical crisis they started to close stores and she was fired just like that.
I see this moment as a way to repay her. She feed me, clothed me and paid for my College (I studied Advertising thinking of it as a more profitable career than Scriptwriting... but my aversion to kissing boots got me stuck, so here I am now, making 4dls/hr for an Hondurian company that is one of the many from which a Big Interpretation CompanyTM outsources). So fine... it's fine. Everything is fine.
But my soul... is crushed. And I'm tired... I can't even do anything I want I do not find the will... even if I need to do it. I'm exhausted because my job is draining me... and I feel myself bone-dry.
I love when my friends tell me how they've felt after reading something I wrote. (They are busy now, with not enough time to read, but... ah well).
I love writing. It's MY thing. I enjoy creating stories, putting all the pieces together, the characters, their arcs!! ...
I can create worlds!
Why should I conform myself having an ordinary quiet life?!
I also sort of play the guitar. The time my teacher gave me his friend's 12 string guitar I just fell in love with it... it has such a lovely sound. And those times I play something (in the loneliness of my room because I'm very shy) and by chance mom or my aunt hear me and identify the song... I'm so proud of it!! And I can't even tell you when they like the melody that comes of me just having fun with the strings.
Art puts a smile not just on my face but in my heart. It gives me a purpose.
Why should I destine myself to this darkness that surrounds me and makes me so unhappy when I know that I can thrive and maybe be really good at something I love?
Sitting down and writing isn't less of a job because it is sitting down and writing. As I said, I'm 31, I'm still young (I don't feel it like that but, ah well...) I still have so much to learn and perfect in my writing and the topics that I choose. I started at my 17, and my work then was pityful (some good ideas here and there but really bad executed) and how do I know that? Because I kept on reading anything that I found fascinating, learning from any kind of text, learning from people and their experiences... and even from made-up experiences!
We, artists, draw inspiration from life and this is an endless source. We never receive a diploma that says "Yes NOW you are a writer/musician/dancer/actor/other"... those from College are just a piece of paper with little to no value. The real learning is in the process... in the work...
And how can I get better at what I love when I'm wasting my time in something that I hate? Yes, it puts food on the table, but why can't my writing do the same thing? I do not ask for millions, not even fame, but to get rid of the whole "starving artist" cliché. We shouldn't starve for food, but for knowldege and drive.
I'm sorry Neil, although I love your writing and agree with your opinions on most subjects I have to disagree with you on the writers' strike. No-one should have a more privileged life as a result of being clever and creative. I worked from the age of 15 to the age of 65 in low-paid jobs, taking 1 year off to go to drama school and 3 years off to get a fine art degree. I worked in terrible but necessary jobs, labouring, stacking boxes, unloading trucks, running errands, filing, going to work on a bicycle at all hours of the day and night on shift work in all kinds of weather. Even when I was a student I was still working in part-time cleani8ng jobs and even during periods of unemployment I worked in volunteer jobs for charities and social services.
According to Mensa I have an IQ of 160 and according to Plymouth University I have a BA hons in Fine Art but I cannot accept the idea that writers and other creative people should avoid normal jobs like driving an "Uber" or working in an office/shop/factory/construction site. To accept that idea would be to create a new aristocratic class when we should abolishing the old princes and aristocrats.
What we need, I feel sure, is a redistribution of labour so that everybody who can do so would spend some time each year in blue collar work and everybody who can would get higher education and a chance to make art of one sort or another.
The idea of doing other jobs to supplement writing or drawing shouldn't be seen as a terrible thing, a punishment or a suffering. Sharing the jobs around should be seen as normal.
I mean, I've done my half century of sweat labour and it didn't hurt me too much. I'm retired now and still making art of various kinds and I've never asked anyone to pay me for any art piece I've made. making art, writing, drawing etc. is the fun stuff which we get to do in exchange for the blue collar stuff which puts food on the table.
The worst pop song ever written was Sting/Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing" which ridicules the working class from a position of educational privilege.
So what's my question? My question is: What's wrong with a writer doing other jobs to make ends meet? Sounds perfectly fine to me.
Nothing's wrong with a writer doing other jobs to make ends meet. Writers and artists have been doing that since the dawn of time. Actors too.
But by the same token, there's nothing right about assuming that writing isn't a blue-collar job, or that writers and other people who make art can only make it for love and that thus they need other jobs to subsidise their craft.
I like living in a world in which the people who make the things that make the world worth living in get paid for their work. For me, that includes the people who make films and TV, books, art and music and comics.
Having spent a lot of time on film and TV sets, it's a blue-collar world on set, and everyone is working long and hard to make the shows you love. I'm never going to suggest that the riggers or the gaffers or the make-up team or the focus-pullers should drive ubers in order to have the privilege of being on the set and working there.
Or to put it another way, from the most blue-collar writer I ever knew...
