Death Battle Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr Stringer:
Runs the Hotel Magnificent. A silly, soggy owl of a man who is prime brain-rotating material. He is deeply strict about keeping his hotel tidy and clean and free of mice. As the shenanigans at the hotel escelate throughout the show, Stringer becomes increasingly unhinged and frequently appears deluded to his clientele. He has a vaguely homoerotic relationship with an "over-familiar" belhop and we stan LGBTQ+ business owners. As the hotel becomes overrun with witches-turned-mice at the end of the show, Stringer goes down with his ship and his fate is left unknown. He's not exactly good at much outside of micro-management and sheer theatricality but he'd probably end up on the winning side by sheer accident.
The hotel manager of the Hotel Magnificent! Runs a very tight ship and has an army of hotel staff who work for him. Intimidation 100. Hates mice. Falls in love with the most evil woman we love that for him.
Henry:
Do you know how much mathematics you can get involved in the games he plays? The guy knows his stuff

Can I just mention how the Eight Principles they're asked to read between Forrest and Refresh are so tied to each character? Octet never rests.
PAULA: 1. There is a deep emptiness.
HENRY: 2. When deep emptiness is covered with dispassionate noise, healing is blocked.
KARLY: 3. Creation and consumption are inbersely (inversely) proportional.
TOBY: 4. Content is not connection is not consensus is not conformity is not contentment.
MARVIN: 5. The brain is plastic and chemical; repetitive stimulus creates quantifiable changes to its makeup. When the brain is trained to favor rapid, shallow, multi-tasked thinking, this stunts its ability to connect, focus, create, and feel.
ED: 6. Anxiety with others starts with anxiety with the self.
JESSICA: 7. Fantasy takes many forms.
VELMA: 8. Every second I am unaware of time is a second that I am giving over to death.

🦄 octet!
alright I KNOW it’s taken me forever to do this but I will do this now for you Berry ❤
Jessica: @rated-r-for-grantaire, I’ve heard your Refresh cover and think you’d be PERFECT for the part
Henry: @ratcarney, you’ve got the bubbly peppy voice to fit Henry, and I wanna hear your voice more tbh
Paula: @daughter-of-prospero, not sure if we count as mutuals yet, but you’ve got the voice of an angel and one that fits Paula to a scary degree almost
Karly: @deniem-supreme, you’ve got the excitable and emotional range that makes you my candidate for Karly
Ed: @atarev, you’ve literally got the lowest voice of anyone I know, no one else’s voice slaps those low notes quite like you!
Toby: @starryxeyedxdyke, you, you, you. Your voice is beautiful and melodious, but I know that it can get raw and powerful when needed. You’ve got the range, darling!
Marvin: @appleflavoredkitkats, I haven’t gotten the fortune of hearing your singing voice, but your voice on its own is surely enough to carry the pain, comedy and struggle of Marvin
Velma: @the-color-of-an-ordinary-day. Berry, I’m really gonna miss you. I know you love this musical and as such I think I’d cast you as the closest thing it has to a main character! I hope you like!
and that’s all of them!

Conversation
Octet Characters As Things I've Said To My Internet Friends
Jessica: You can't CANCEL ME! I'll cancel you for cancelling me!
Henry: I'll cook for myself later, I'm too busy cooking FAKE FOOD for FAKE PEOPLE right now!
Paula: Stop watching vines and just fall asleep already.
Karly: JERK OFF! Wait, no, don't, I didn't mean to say that, I meant to say, "Fuck off, jerk!"
Ed: No one in real life ever hugs me.
Toby: Oh hell yes, it is online debate time.
Marvin: God is definitely nerfing me right now but I don't care.
Velma: Sephora witch kits are the only thing to make me laugh anymore.
Saul: I am the god of this discord server.

The Dragon
Listen to "Olde English" and tell me why she shouldn't win. She's a venomous dragon AND a scholar and was able to kill Beowulf. Queen behavior honestly

Octet Characters as Ordinary Days Lyrics
did you really think I wouldn’t make this-
Jessica: “Trust me, I’m not crazy, I can see you making faces in the rearview mirror”
Henry: “I wish that I could make the people disappear”
Paula: “Because I’ll be here, right beside you as long as you want me to be”
Karly: “Well ya should’ve heard my mom when I dropped le bomb and said, ‘I don’t wanna be here’.”
Ed: “Sitting here at Starbucks drinking coffee with a professional cat-sitter is all my life is going to amount to”
Toby: “It makes me wanna scream, or write a manifesto that declares the city void of any soul”
Marvin: “and I think ‘what the heck’”
Velma: “Beautiful takes a person who makes a connection”

what’s your ranking of the octet characters?
Okay this is hard because there's so many factors to consider, but this is how much I like them as characters and as stories, not how much I'd like them in person.
Like I mentioned, Ed. So beautifully portrayed. Also a very unconventional story you don't see humanized very often, and the little details of Adam's performance kill me every time. Plus he gets "I've got the best format for an opinion" and "I've got a black jpeg" he's got half of the best Fugue State bits.
2. Toby. See above and everything in my last post about Actually. "I don't trust myself anymore, and I don't love- fuck it." aaaah "I'm not completely here right now" yeah I love him.
3. Velma. Though just as much for her break time monologue than for Beautiful. I also "just want something that is pure and good" and to live in a world where things can be appreciated without having to constantly worry and deal with toxic communities. And I also infodump on whatever poor soul dares to ask. And of course everything in Beautiful.
3. Marvin. Also see my last post about Little God.
4. Henry. Besides Velma the only other one I would probably be friends with, if this guy plays board games (I feel like he could easily get sucked into MTG). The most comedic song but equally as heartbreaking.
6. Paula. I love her and I love Starr. I don't think I'd like her irl she's intimidating.
7. Karly. I really don't know that much about her!!! Idk I just don't feel like I know her like I know the rest of the crew.
8. Jessica. I'm sorry. But there's only 8 lol someone has to be last.

musicals actively weirder than “an actor and musical fall in love” (la la land)
(also im trying to keep this to either weird ideas or adaptations that are unexpected, so shrek (based on a wildly popular film despite being an odd concept) or similar adaptations are not included)
about 70 pages from the middle of war and peace (natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812)
the trial of leo frank (parade)
the stories of the assassins and would be assassins of american presidents, also set kind of at a carnival? also its written by sondheim? (assassins)
an adaptation of the frogs by aristophanes, also by sondheim (the frogs)
a modern adaptation of lysistrada, in which women withhold sex to get their men to make peace, or in this case, win the big game (lysistrada jones)
a jutebox musical using the songs of jim steinmen popularized by meatloaf that’s also a loose retelling of peter pan (bat out of hell)
a couple’s car breaks down on the way to visit an old teacher, a doctor creates a sexy man, there are aliens? i suppose it’s a loose retelling of frankenstein. (rocky horror show)
look, i have to include hamilton because it is a weird musical idea
a young man plays the role of one of charlemagne’s sons, almost is convinced to self-immolate himself at the end (pippin)
a spelling bee (25th annual putnam spelling bee)
world chess competitions during the cold war (chess)
cats get up to wacky hyjinks (cats)
thomas the tank engine falls in love, also its an adaptation of the story of john henry (starlight express)
a retelling of sir philip sidney’s arcadia using the music of the go-gos (and belinda carlisle) and also it’s very queer (head over heels)
acapella internet addicts anonymous (octet)

Got any random musical recommendations? I need something new to listen to haha
yes i have many !!! these are mostly ones i don’t talk about a lot bc if you’re here you probably know about like. we are the tigers or six. but in no particular order:
everybody’s talking about jamie: PLEASE it’s so good the soundtrack is original and it SLAPS and i’m gonna go put it on right now. there’s a proshot and apparently a movie in production ??? idk but it’s about a british kid named jamie who wants to be a drag queen and if you’re a fan of six the proshot has courtney bowman and cherelle jay was in a later cast !!!
bring it on: 👌👌👌👌 a+++ obc, ariana debose, kate rockwell, taylor louderman, elle mclemore, ryann redmond (and janet krupin for all the watt in concert peeps), killer instinct is one of the most fun villain songs ever
alice by heart: GOD I LOVE THIS SHOW. it’s a little hard to follow so probably should be reserved for when you have some time to rewatch/rewind every once in a while but it’s so worth it. the score is beautiful and there isn’t a single skip on the album (side note bc i cant not say it: kim blanck loml <33) and it’s just such a beautiful show. it’s by the same guys that did spring awakening so if you like that all the more reason to watch this !!!!
octet: speaking of kim blanck! it’s a dave malloy show so if you like ghost quartet/great comet definitely check this one out it’s acappella and about like tech and it’s not entirely focused on that but it’s so good???? this is the only one i don’t have a boot of so i don’t actually know the entire plot (if anyone does have one PLEASE hmu) but beautiful lives in my mind rent free and little god is a thirteen minute trip and a half
36 questions: podcast musical featuring jonathan groff and jessie shelton !!! it’s about a couple who try to repair their marriage using the 36 question experiment. if you still need convincing it also features a duck named henry who has impeccable comedic timing and loves cheerios.
the mad ones: this show makes me want to turn the radio fully up and drive through nevada all night with the windows open. follows samantha brown as she grieves her best friend kelly manning and tries to sort out what she wants for her future against other people’s expectations. plus the off bway soundtrack has krystina alabado, emma hunton, and ben fankhauser so what’s not to love
random ones i don’t feel like going into but are worth mentioning: willow, love in hate nation, 35mm, waitress, hadestown, legally blonde
