Hemorrhoids - Symptoms and causes
Hemorrhoids, also pronounced "HEM-uh-roids," are enlarged veins located in the lower rectum and anus. Varicose veins and hemorrhoids are comparable. Internal hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that occur inside the rectum. They can also form external hemorrhoids, which are under the skin around the anus.
Treatment options for hemorrhoids are numerous. A lot of people find relief with lifestyle modifications and at-home therapies.

Struggling with piles (haemorrhoids)?
Hemorrhoids, commonly known as piles, are a prevalent but often uncomfortable condition affecting millions worldwide. These swollen veins in the rectum and anus can cause pain, itching, and discomfort, significantly impacting daily life. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options is crucial for managing this condition effectively.
Causes of Hemorrhoids:
Hemorrhoids can develop due to several factors, including:
Straining during bowel movements: Increased pressure on the rectal veins can lead to the development of hemorrhoids. Chronic constipation or diarrhea: Irregular bowel habits can contribute to the formation of hemorrhoids. Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can impair bowel function and contribute to the development of piles. Obesity: Excess weight puts additional pressure on the rectal veins, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and increased pressure on the pelvic area during pregnancy can lead to the development of hemorrhoids. Symptoms of Hemorrhoids:
Common symptoms of hemorrhoids include:
Pain or discomfort during bowel movements Itching or irritation in the anal region Swelling or lumps around the anus Bleeding during bowel movements Discomfort or pain while sitting Effective Treatments for Hemorrhoids:
Several treatment options are available to alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoids and promote healing:
Over-the-counter creams and ointments: These products can provide relief from itching and discomfort. Warm baths: Soaking in a warm bath can help reduce swelling and soothe the anal area. High-fiber diet: Consuming a diet rich in fiber can soften stools and make them easier to pass, reducing strain during bowel movements. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water helps prevent constipation and keeps stools soft. Topical treatments: Applying witch hazel or aloe vera gel to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Sitz baths: Sitting in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day can provide relief from symptoms. Medical procedures: In severe cases, procedures such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or surgical removal may be necessary to treat hemorrhoids effectively.

What are the symptoms of piles?
The symptoms of piles (hemorrhoids) can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition. Hemorrhoids can be internal or external, and some individuals may experience a combination of both. Common symptoms of piles include:
Rectal Bleeding: One of the most common symptoms of piles is rectal bleeding. This typically occurs during or after a bowel movement. The blood may be bright red or darker in color and may be found on toilet paper, in the toilet bowl, or on the stool.
Pain or Discomfort: You may experience pain or discomfort, especially during bowel movements. This discomfort can vary from mild to severe and may be accompanied by a burning or itching sensation.
Anal Itching or Irritation: Itching around the anal area is a common symptom of piles. The irritation may be persistent and can be quite uncomfortable.
Swelling or Lump near the Anus: External piles often manifest as soft lumps or swellings near the anal opening. These can be painful, especially when sitting or during bowel movements.
Mucous Discharge: Some individuals with internal piles may notice a mucous discharge after a bowel movement.
Incomplete Bowel Movements: People with large internal piles may feel as though they have not fully emptied their bowels after a bowel movement.
Prolapse: In more severe cases, internal piles can prolapse or protrude outside the anus, especially during bowel movements. These prolapsed hemorrhoids may need to be manually pushed back inside.
Fecal Leakage: In rare cases, particularly when piles are very large and obstruct the anal opening, fecal leakage or soiling of underwear can occur.
It's important to note that while these symptoms are common in piles, they can also be indicative of other gastrointestinal conditions. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations. Early intervention and management can help alleviate symptoms and prevent complications.

Warning for gross sex question: I have had a hemorrhoid for a long time, that often itches, and often bleeds when I sit on the toilet. I have tried treating it with non-prescription creams several times, but it always comes back. One of these days I should probably have a doctor take a look at it again.
My question is: Is this a problem/danger if I wish to be on the receiving end of anal sex (something I have never done, but have considered doing)? Should I have it completely treated/removed before I try that type of activity? Or is it enough if my partner uses a condom and plenty of lube?
hi anon,
this question isn't gross, it's very practical. I'm sorry to report that having penetrative anal sex with hemorrhoids isn't recommended, as it tends to be significantly less comfortable and comes with a risk of worsening your hemorrhoids by causing irritation and even bleeding, as well as tearing the delicate tissue of your anal cavity, which in turn comes with a risk for infection to enter your body. in short, it's generally advised that anal penetration be avoided until you're no longer experiencing any adverse symptoms from your hemorrhoids.

thrombocytopenia took him.
he was completely fine on friday and saturday aside from some mild, unexplained bleeding that we assumed were anal gland issues or hemorrhoids. we tried to call a vet on friday, but they were closed, and he had no other symptoms
sunday, we were going to leave the house for a few hours. we tried to let the dogs out. benji wouldn't get up, which isn't unusual - he's always been stubborn about going outside. i was insistent - i didn't want him to be uncomfortable while we were gone
when i lifted up the covers of my mom's bed.... his back leg was black. i was confused at what i was looking at at first. was his leg wet? had he been chewing on it? but we rolled him over and his stomach was splotched red with subcutaneous blood (bruises)
we rushed him to an emergency vet right away and they got him in. they did all kinds of bloodwork and tests, but couldn't determine a primary cause for the symptoms. all of tests came back fine, normal. aside from zero platelets and signs of anemia. it's possible there was something with his spleen - it's unknown
his condition made it too dangerous to operate, let alone draw blood. they gave him IV fluids and drugs of all kinds, but he didn't improve at all within 12 hours. and they were constantly checking him, flipping him around, poking at him. my mom and i just held him and sang to him. but in the morning, our options were either to send him to another clinic for even more invasive testing (which we wouldn't have been able to afford, and if something like cancer was found, to treat him would only extend his suffering). we made the decision to put him down, but only after we were certain that he was in decline
he went very peacefully. we were all there holding him
realistically, he likely had an underlying condition we didn't know about. but everything was so sudden. it's going to take time to process
benji was the first dog i ever had. i didn't even want a dog, my mom did, but he quickly became my buddy. as a puppy he was very rambunctious and clingy - he actually used to injure me with bruising, tackling hugs. as he aged, he became more standoffish and aloof - catlike. but he was always sweet. he would check on me frequently any time i was ill, or lounging in bed because of depression. he loved lettuce. and cheese. and noodles. and cinnamon. he smelled horrible. he was a "crusty white dog" and i'd pick the gunk out of his eyes and because he was a little freak he would eat it when i tried to pull my hand away. he attacked a home intruder once. he was so, so sad when i had top surgery and i wouldn't let him hug me. he taught his little brother, pepper, how to go up and down the stairs. he loved running around in the snow. he was extremely, extremely bright. i used to count out the days my parents would be coming home by tapping on his back. his favorite game was "covers" - moving my hand around under the sheets like i was controlling a puppet and he'd attack it. his favorite kind of toy was plushes but especially lambchop. he loved to cuddle them and was generally careful with them. pepper would always end up destroying and gutting them, but benji would still cuddle the empty toy. he was so good with children and babies. he used to playfully growl at me in greeting. he used to comfort me when i was crying. he was so good at catching treats, although his eyes started to get hazy towards the end and he started to miss. he had this gay little prance when he walked. he was this weird mini schnauzer, chihuahua, whatever mutt. i've never seen a dog like him before or since.
and he's gone now

^Herz at the hospital earlier today
This was the only picture I was able to get because I had to undress and put all of my belongings once we got onto the surgery floor
Health update under the cut
Scopes are done!
I had an endoscopy (they stick a camera down your throat into your belly) and a colonoscopy today. My OBGYN noticed I had really severe hemorrhoids the last time I had a physical exam with her. She was concerned enough I was referred to a GI surgeon right away.
This bitch is the coolest doc I've ever met. She came in with cat scrubs, a fish bonnet, and raccoons in trash cans socks. We walked through my entire, not just GI related medical history in about 45 minutes. The biggest concern are the hemorrhoids which have been causing me major problems lately. I couldn't poop without bleeding so much I would come close to passing out.
I was immediately scheduled for my scopes for today and for my CT scan in a couple of weeks.
The last scopes I got, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, severe ulcers, diverticulitis, inguinal hernia, and "all-around general inflammation." I wasn't told what to do. Wasn't given any drugs or even supplements. Nothing.
All of my symptoms improved significantly when I was diagnosed with Addison's and started treatment. I also got much more strict with my diet. WFPB and a daily juice really helped a lot.
Alas, I never stopped having problems, then they suddenly got worse. Now we are here.
Having broken adrenal glads makes everything so much more difficult. This simple procedure had to be turned into a big event. When being sedated, I require an extra anesthesiologist who specializes with Addison's along with the regular anesthesiologist. This person is in charge of my 100mg injection of Sulocortef to substitute for my lack of cortisol.
The endoscopy revealed that I have really severe inflammation in my stomach along with the ulcers. This is probably why it always hurts to eat no matter what it is. The colonoscopy revealed that my hemorrhoids likely need surgery. We are happy I am not internally bleeding.
I have been given two medications that are supposed to help with the stomach issues. Fiber is the biggest thing that will help with the hemorrhoids outside of stitching them bad boys up. We are going to get a bidet because that helps with the pain, the bleeding, and cleanliness, though.
These are my least favorite health problems I have. I am not going to lie. I hate it all so much for so many different reasons.
BUT
I am so incredibly grateful for being heard by my doctors for the first time in my life. The nurse that did my IV, my specialist anesthesiologist, and my doctor herself all could not believe I had this procedure multiple times before and never treated for anything.

Whenever I have this positivity streak going it's always squashed by some fucked up dose of reality lol
So, this may be tmi, sorry to those who it is.. But I have had blood in my stool on and off for about 6-7 months now, and at first I thought they were just hemorrhoids but then I went to the ER for pain and such and they found a bad infection in my urine and said it was a UTI (ignoring the symptom of blood in stool which has nothing to do with a UTI.. and also I didn't have UTI symptoms besides cramping/back pain!?)
After that began the 6 month long constant follow ups with doctors to try and find answers and everyone telling me I'm "yound and healthy" so to just monitor it (despite it not getting better, if anything getting worse).
I got a call today from one of the doctors I spoke to about a month ago saying they referred me to a gastroenterologist specialist I will get a call from today. The GI place called and said that the referral made was for both a colonoscopy and an upper endoscopy.
So I made that for Jan. 6th, and while I know the goal was to get this to get answers, but I am freaking out about it now because 1) will have to be put under anesthesia (have never ever done this and I know there is a risk of not waking up from complications. And 2) I will find out pretty definitively if something is really wrong. And both of those possibilities, even though I know they are not definitives, feel so incredibly scary.
I also need someone to pick me up from the procedure and I don't really have anyone to ask. I could ask my friend but it's a Monday, she works, and she's pretty often busy and so I know the likelihood is she won't be able to. And then my brother tells everything to me mom who I am not in contact with and I don't want her knowing about these kinds of things right now bc she'll use it to her advantage. But apart from that it's not like I can ask my therapist for a ride. And so that logistical part is hard too. Less hard I guess, but hard.
And then there's the added horror of costs... like what will I owe for this procedure.. it'll have just become a new year and while I have the same insurance I will no longer have met the deductible/out of pocket max etc so that's something preoccupying my brain too.
Life just feels so heavy lately and scary and then moments like this happen that just feel like the floor falls out from underneath me, and it's just been hard.
