Last week, a picket was organised in Warsaw to show solidarity with Belarus and raise awareness both in Poland and worldwide.
Tumblr media
With signs in Belarusian, Polish and English, the participants were raising awareness about the situation in Belarus and calling for free elections.
No violence or screaming, just spreading the information to let people know about the pre-election repressions and jailed presidential candidates. The participants were asked to keep distance (which didn’t really work but at least they were wearing masks) and stand in a way which wouldn’t block the pedestrians’ movement. Long story short, it was a peaceful protest, not a violent manifestation.
I can’t underline it enough how extremely important it is to spread the information. I’m glad that Polish people are able to show solidarity and not just whine about the situation in our country. Sure, it’s far from good in Poland, but it’s not an excuse to ignore the situation in our neighbours’ country. I feel like way too many people in Poland forget that there are countries where life is much more of a struggle.

Hi Alex! I just wanted to thank you for the post about Belarus and what's going on there, no need to reply. I use Tumblr quite a lot for shitposting, and for obvious reasons, such as censorship and fear of being targeted for my opinions, don't post about the situation in my country. Also, I feel ashamed to even admit I'm from Belarus; living in a dictatorship is sickening. So seeing that someone on this platform spread the information on our situation is reassuring. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the message. I kinda want to reply just to show people who follow me how important it is to speak loudly about what's going on in the world. It shouldn't be a thing to feel ashamed of your nationality ! And yet, SO MANY people are. I am, lots of my polish mutuals are as well. Living here, in Eastern Europe is so wild and we will never be at peace without your help from the west. Not speaking about Belarus and other countires that struggle a lot not being in European Union & the fact that it makes it even harder to make any change in there! WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT INJUSTICE HAPPENING IN THE WORLD. I don't care if you know where Belarus is, google it. I don't care about you being American, French, Canadian or Taiwanese. Your words matter wherever you are and you make a hUGE change just by informing people around you 'bout what's happening. You are raising awareness and I can't thank you enough for it. Go spread the word, dear! Please.

Don't let what's happening in Belarus disappear. Tumblr almost got rid of the Black Lives Matter tag by shoving it into the politics, trump, and covid tags or putting things that weren't even tagged with black lives matter in that tag. People are being attacked and killed in Belarus because they are refusing the very obvious vote tampering, they are fighting back, don't let what's happening be forgotten.
Their internet is being blocked, please boost this and tag with Belarus and Belarus Protests in the tags!

Guys it's not a joke. It's real. Pray for us please.
Keep talking about Belarus!
Belarus has been a dictatorship for many, many years, but it was never this gruesome, this... real. In case you didn't know, Lukashenko has been in office since 1994, he changed the constitution to be able to do it. The elections have been widely known to be falsified for years, getting lukashenko 80% or 90% of votes each and every time, although his real support is estimated to be realistically around 3%, and it could be even lower now, since he still denies the very existence (existence, not seriousness!) of coronavirus.
On the 10th of august, another election took place. To no surprise, 3 of his main opponents have suddenly been arrested and disqualified from the election in the last weeks and, as you could expect, he won again with 80% of votes.
So people have gone to the streets. Lukashenko is apparently hiding in turkey. It's hard to organize, to communicate or to even document what's happening due to all of the internet being completely down.
Rhe police is shooting people, using tear gas and actual grenades on the masses. A cop van drove into the crowd from the behind running multiple people over. There's a lot of blood, ambulances, and possible dead, (UPDATE: one confirmed dead) though it's really impossible to know, as there are little to no news sources available in Belarus, especially with the wifi being down.
The belarussian police, or militia, is an organization working not only obviously unethically, but illegally too - people are mass-arrested without an open cause, beaten, held in arrest for days, and killed. Just yesterday a man's entire arm was ripped off in some kind of explosion. (This is not confirmed, second-hand relation). Nothing quite of this scale happened since the 90s, or possibly ever in the modern history of Belarus. Belarussians are finally demanding change, and really, what can the police do against a whole nation?
I wish I could reffer everyone to some kind of petition, charity organization, anything, but the events are so current that it's hard for me to say how people from other countries could possibly help. All I can do is raise a little awareness of what's happening, so please, keep reading, keep yourselves updated and informed and don't forget belarus.
