My only real outstanding question for s2ep2 of Helluva is…
Who is Possum Woman and Possum Child??
This is like the most absurd unexplained background gag of all time because they show up TWICE, and I STILL have no idea who or what they are… besides a mood.
There's something so especially heartbreaking about seeing Octavia, who was always shown as the "I hate my parents! My dad's the worst" girl, to be so excited and genuinely happy at the idea of doing something special with her dad
To be clear, I love this show, it's blown me away since the pilot with the writing and characters and music and voice acting and in particular the impeccable comedic timing. And I am on the Stolitz train all the way to the end of the line. But this particular episode mostly did not do it for me, especially after the powerhouses that were 6, 7 and S2E1.
The new writer (Adam Neylan) has done a predictable by-the-numbers plot that could have been lifted from any American television sitcom from 1980 onward, and quite possibly was. I could see each plot beat coming a mile away and I could have recited the dialogue ahead of time.
HB has always been full of deranged "I can't believe they SAID that / I can't believe they DID that" energy, and then swerving from that into genuinely moving and well-grounded character moments. None of that is here. The characters don't sound like themselves to me. Blitzo's colorful trademark rants are missing, most obviously, and so is Stolas's ludicrous inappropriate dirty talk, but everyone else is at least subtly off.
Continuity is also lacking. At the end of the last episode Stolas miserably realized that Blitzo sees their relationship as a transaction, and not always one he enjoys. He also stood up to his physically and verbally abusive wife for the first time. Now suddenly he's casually sniping at her and comfortably sassing Blitzo. The lines are funny but they don't make sense! (Have we ever seen Stolas criticize Blitzo before, ever, even in jest?)
We did need a lighter tone for this episode, and it makes sense to have Blitzo and Stolas avoid the dreaded Feelings Talk and/or set it aside to collaborate on finding Octavia. It just wasn't done very well.
The voice acting also felt off to me, particularly for Millie and Octavia. I love Octavia's hoarse voice and accent, and Millie's southern drawl, and they were gone here.
The forced-to-act-in-a-sitcom plot is hard for me to assess because I really don't like that particular kind of humor. Watching Blitzo and the audience suffer just made me pray for violence that did not come soon enough. And if I started in on the gaping logic holes I'd be here all day, so I won't.
Things I did like, even if they mostly weren't well executed: Human Stolas being gorgeous, with red sunglasses on his forehead to mimic his upper eyes. The magical-girl transformation sequence. Moxxie following up on his hallucination-resolution to be more assertive. Blitzo seemingly taking Moxxie's advice and support. Octavia accidentally killing the real whatsisname-actor when she arrived. Moxxie being an enthusiastic patron of the arts. The Loona flashback, AUGH, that was actually affecting, I hadn't guessed her situation was so horrible. Stolas getting Blitzo's name right. And of course Loona and Octavia bonding, we've all been wanting that.
The conversation between Stolas and Octavia at the end of the Loo Loo Land episode, and the one between Blitzo and Stolas after Ozzie's, are how you do messy emotional situations right. They're brilliant scenes. I want more of that and more zany murder shenanigans. Hopefully they haven't let this guy write any more episodes on his own and we'll get them.
so annoyed at being on twitter at all after the new episode release.
just so much drama, people barking at each other, talking about homophobes, ridiculous interpretations of things that are not backed by any contextual evidence from the show. it's infuriating.
and then, there's everyone's opinions.
don't even get me started.
contains: mild spoilers for s2e2
if i wanted to hear how "depressing" or "poorly written" someone thinks this episode was, I'd ask directly, and i probably won't ask, actually. to see people claiming that it's (personally?? universally?) depressing that Stolitz aren't at a certain point in their relationship... it just really pisses me off (especially me, because — hi, Divorced at 24; hi, aromantic allosexual — no, not everything good has to be perfect or romantic in life. fuck off).
it is not depressing that stolas and blitz have a mostly sexual relationship and don't really know each other super well outside of that. it just isn't. it's a fact.
it's not depressing that stolas encouraged blitz with sexual compliments before he went on stage; it's just what he did.
i don't find that depressing, i find it realistic and a good measure of their current characters. if anything, assuming that they will indeed get to know each other better as the show goes on, the sexual compliment from stolas (and the episode as a whole) shows a lot of growth shared between them. these two are being much more honest with each other in ways they're comfortable with, including not only sexual compliments, but also in showing anger, frustration, attraction, worry, sympathy, and probably others that i can't think of off the top of my head.
point is, it's not depressing. it's not even meant to be depressing by my understanding of the tone of this episode. it's actually quite grand to see them interacting this way because already they've changed so much in their interactions since Ozzie's. people need to quit being so romance deprived and just look at what the characters are actually doing. stolitz have a relationship, and right now, they're navigating things in what ways they can. let them navigate and stop being such a nitpicker on my timeline. ffs.
Ok I'm confused on the Blitz Stolas relationship rn cause they are basically back to normal/familiar/openly flirty and possibly in better shape than BEFORE ozzies like, they're a thing. Like, they were literally holding hands
And I've seen people say that ep.9 could be the missing puzzle piece but that wouldn't make sense ? cause S2 E1 we see stolas' side of the ozzies after matha and nothing between them was dealt with??
So was the pressure of finding Via and Loona outweigh their awkwardness or did things just go back to the way they were ? OR is there actually a piece were missing?
-- Also just wanna say that Loona and Octavias sistership got me a lil bit ok bye
actually a true testiment to how powerful stolas is is not the fact that he can kill someone with just his stare or that he can possess humans or his true form or anything like that.
This episode also just proves that Stolas is still the only one laughing at Blitz’s jokes, and if that doesn’t scream that they’re meant to be together, I don’t know what does.
I rewatched S2E2 of Helluva Boss ("Seeing Stars") and got hit with that BANGER of a line from Loona about dads having issues and messing up all the time but still caring. VIVZIE, I am sensing a THEMEEEEEEE.
And thank you for all the lovely comments thus far! I'm so tickled to see how many folks connect with this, whether you're from the American South or not. Food is such a core love language for so many people.

PANEL 1: (Lucifer sits atop a barstool-like chair on his balcony at the hotel. He's curled up in on himself, quietly crying with his head in his arms as he slumps over the marble balustrade and his tail curled around his ankles.)
PANEL 2: (Alastor gently sets a large platter of fresh beignets next to Lucifer's arm, and Lucifer glances up, looking miserable.)
Alastor: (offscreen) You're not a bad father, you know.
PANEL 3: (Alastor strikes a jazz-hands pose as a canned laugh track emanates from his cane.)
Alastor: Granted, YES you did fail spectacularly! You fail A LOT. But...
PANEL 4: (Closeup of the lower half of Lucifer's face as more tears fall down his cheeks.)
Alastor: (offscreen) ...you're consistently, SINCERELY trying. And that is incredibly important.
PANEL 5: (closeup of Alastor's right eye in profile)
Alastor: It's certainly more than my father ever did.
PANEL 6: (Alastor reaches over and places a hand on Lucifer's, which is still clutching at his upper arm. Though we can't see Lucifer's face, he's sitting a little straighter, looking up at Alastor.)
Alastor: (offscreen) Or yours, for that matter.
