home: a feeling
so you know how home stopped being a physical place or meaning family a long while ago? home now has been only a feeling.
drinking cheap white wine out of coffee mugs at midnight in your friend's room with van Gogh art and fairy lights and plants talking about dysfunctional families and crying and laughing and ordering fries and knowing you are not being judged and you can be yourself because they are being themselves.
home is supposed to be routine and normal. home is supposed to be a constant. home is supposed to be your safe haven. but what ever has been as it was supposed to be? and so home now is only a feeling.
sitting in the park after dinner with new friends as the neighbourhood cat sleeps in your lap and you talk about things you haven't yet disclosed to people you have known for years. feeling the cat purr as it snuggles up closer to you. feeling the breeze in your hair. crying without being asked to stop or given advice or an awkward attempt at comforting physically. them just letting you be and sitting there by you, holding space. safe, silent, soothing.
home is not one place, one person, one thing. it is not your childhood house, it is not your first studio apartment at 25. it is not your lover's apartment. it is not your best friend's art studio. home is not something you are able to visit frequently. you've been away, on a journey, and home shows up as this feeling every now and then just when you think you're so home sick that you cannot take this life anymore. that's when home shows up.
it shows up as that neighbour who ensures she gets you a box full of baked goodies each day after her pâtisserie classes even though you have barely exchanged any words. it shows up as that friend's boyfriend who sits next to you throughout the world cup final explaining the sport to you so that you enjoy that match as much as the others in the room. it shows up as your friend's girlfriend's younger sister who takes a liking to you and welcomes you into her bedroom, something she doesn't do for even her sister and stays up all night talking to you about books.
home is not as ever-present as home was supposed to be. but home exists and it does show up. and for that I am thankful and for that I am blessed. and for that I will not give up, I will continue this journey.

BACK TO "OLD" KOREAN DRAMAS
Hello my twenties / Age of youth
Lost in your twenties? This drama is for you. It follows the lives and struggles of five female college students who share a house. Its lightness and endearing characters make this drama a nugget. I identified with many of the situations. I recommend it if you want to have a good time!
PS: there are two seasons :)

age of youth is such a good drama because these girls will break down crying at their jobs and scream and rage and think about murder and then at the end of the day they all eat dinner together. it’s genius.

Dear twenty-seven year old me,
You have your work cut out for you, let me just say that right away. I am sorry but this is all I could do. I, the twenty-six-year-old, who had to abandon the home she was happy and struggling to build. And the ones before me, the twenty-five, twenty-four, twenty-three, twenty-two, twenty-one, and twenty-year-old selves too — I won't say we did the best we could but I will say that we tried.
Of course, now, with five days left before I turn 27, I finally know that sometimes trying is not enough. For things that absolutely matter to you, for things you absolutely want, trying is not enough. And so you, you have to do better than try.
Too much pressure? But you only have to try for yourself. You don't have to try for the world or anybody in it. You don't have to try to be kinder, sweeter, politer, or more useful. Friends, lovers, corporations, ideologies will always demand more and more and more from you. And for them I tried and tried and tried. All of your twenty-something selves until now did. Your teen selves too.
Also, just because you are a good person, it does not mean that the world will treat you better. One of the hardest truths to accept and understand. Of course, you were never good because you thought there would be such a reward but you always just assumed that it would only be natural for life to be just and fair in these ways. Now I know it's not.
Please, remember, you do not have to be quiet and take it all lying down. You can still speak your mind and respectfully put people back in their place instead of letting them walk all over you. You are no Gandhi. You should only show your other cheek to someone when they have kissed one cheek and now you want them to kiss the other. Not to slap you again.
When you are tired, when you are upset and demotivated, please, take rest. Pause but do not quit or abandon. You know, our abandonment issues may just have something to do with the fact that we have quite easily abandoned our values, goals, and dreams at different stages of life.
Either because we wanted to accommodate another person or because of the hurdles that showed up. Or because it was us who did not believe that our goals and values and dreams were worthy of being faithful to, worthy of being met, worthy of being celebrated.
But dear twenty-seven-year-old me, listen to me. You are worthy. And I know you like proof and reason and not empty flattery or words of affirmation. And I could list a thousand reasons and this isn't even a hyperbole — I really could. However, all you need to know to believe that is that you have lived a life that is gracious and graceful. God loving, not god fearing. Fear has never motivated you in any walk of life. You are someone that if you were to come across you would not only really like but gosh you would be in utter awe and really respect.
Above any reason I could give you, however, is this — you have to support yourself, no matter who you are and how you decide to live your life, you have to support yourself.
Okay, now that all of this important stuff is out of the way I just want to say, while you work hard at what is important, have fun (as much as is possible and in ways that is safe) and keep writing. For dreams that do not seem possible right now, put them on hold but do not abandon them or shoot them in the head. For dreams that are possible now, don't overthink.
Balance, breathe, and go back to basics. That is all you have to remember when it all gets too much. I love you, your mother loves you, and there are a handful more on that list. If all else pales in face of pain, go to them. In joy and abundance too, go to them. In the mundanity of life too, be by them whenever possible.
All my love, now and forever, 26-year-old you.

i just realised why i miss being in school/uni/basically being in education... for its safety.
safety as in, everyone is on the same path of being in school and studying, so there's no one who's really "behind".
everything is already scheduled and structured (that's the word i always use whenever i explain why i miss being in school; my life is structured as a student). we all have the same dates for exams, deadlines, and holidays. we're given the same portion of tasks. we all can access the same facilities.
after graduating and no longer being a student, everyone leaves on different paths. the height of social media (especially Instagram for me) heightens the feeling of, you guessed it, being behind my peers. being lost. achieving less than them. personally, in the career department of life -- although achievements aren't solely based on career, whether one has landed a job, things like that.
although actually no one has it all figured out.
rebecca shortt's podcast opens my eyes on this topic, but what hits me the most is that achievements include non-academic, non-career stuff, like pretty much being a good friend or sister or daughter is an achievement itself.
i have to tattoo the last part of the sentence on my forehead. i keep on forgetting about that. as a recent graduate who's still unemployed, that's the reminder i need to hear on a daily basis.

Age of Youth/Hello My Twenties! - 8/10
Oh man, this series... Here's the thing.
Most K-dramas do not have more than one season. Age of Youth aka Hello My Twenties! had two seasons. And between seasons, due to scheduling conflicts they had to recast one of the leads and due to other reasons (possibly the actress being involved in a bullying scandal? idk) another one of the leads was written out of the show. The tragedy of this show is that the first season is SO good. Like we're verging on 10/10 territory and then the second season is... just not. It's more of a 7/10 show. I ended up giving the show, as a whole, 8/10 because the first season really is THAT good, but damn, I wish the second season wasn't what it was.
Tumblr media
The show is about 5 women in their twenties who are housemates living in Seoul and are very different people. I LOVE how absolutely women-centric this show is. The way this show explores these different women, the secrets they carry, how they relate to each other (or sometimes fail to relate to each other) and how their pasts inform how they respond to situations. It's all SO good. Complicated female characters with genuinely compelling stories! And then... season 2 happened.
The decline in quality in season 2 is just SUCH a shame. I think the recasting of one of the main girls was... not great but I think if it was just that, I could have dealt with it.
But writing out one of the five housemates completely changed the dynamic. And the character they created to become the new housemate just sucked. She really did. The actress was not good. The character was not good. Just bad, all around. By halfway through the season I was fast forwarding through the scenes with her storyline.
It's a shame because I thought that in season 2, Ye-eun and Ji-won's storylines were legitimately good (and was really mad we had to sit through a million scenes with New Girl and her romance storyline when I'd much rather see Ye-eun with her new boyfriend). And Eun-jae's story was pretty solid too. Jin-myung's story in season 2 was... meh. But I def could have lived with all of that if they had kept the same 5 main characters as season 1. After season 1, I was really looking forward to seeing what Yi-na did with her life but... nope. She just got written out after the first ep of season 2 and was replaced by an utter flop of a character.
