ello ello again! work's picking up with a vengeance and i have been in & out of the hospital recently, so once again i have been queueing replies. (the latest batch should start posting today.) i'm also going to work on polishing up my multi when i find the time, so if y'all ever want to send things over there, feel free. i'm hoping that things will settle down by the end of the week and i'll be able to be actively active around here again, crossed fingers.

John in Hellblazer Dead in America #2

I'm like losing it over this idea, but!

(And I'm sorry to people in the John Constantine tag who just want Constantine. I feel you, and I'm sorry.)

So, in the John Constantine Hellblazer (2019) by Spurrier and Campbell, and in the current John Constantine Hellblazer: Dead in America (2024), there's a pretty huge, big, important plot point where Constantine has died. Like he for real died. His body's dead. His soul is still occupying his dead body. He's still moving around like he's alive, but his body's rotting. (Spoilers for Dead in America from here, btw)

Not to get into the plot too much, but for the 2019 run, there's something Constantine promised his soul to when he dies, and to escape that, he astral projected by having someone stop his heart, with the plan to revive it later. And he does get his soul back in his body, but the body's dead.

As of right now (Dead in America #2) we don't know why exactly this happened.

At the end of 2019, we get this:

Now, mind these panels comes before John realizes he's dead (by like a page or two), but I do straight up love the idea that he's pissed off so many people that no afterlife actually *wants* to take him anymore.

Now, from Dead in America #2, we get this:

Implying that there's something keeping his soul and body going despite the whole being dead thing. I'm assuming that we'll be told eventually, but no idea yet.

All of that to say this: John Constantine is basically possessing his own dead body, atm. So that means he would fall under the Federal Anti-Ecto Control Acts, right???

All I'm saying is that I love the idea of an entire government organization hunting John Constantine. All I'm saying is that I really, really need to see John Constantine being captured and experimented on by the Drs Fenton.

All I'm saying is that Danny would try to get him out, especially if he was trapped in the Fentons' basement. All I'm saying is that this would be such a perfect set up for some interesting darker fic.

The current run is pretty seperated from all other DC stuff. It's basically just Vertigo comics, just Constantine, Sandman, and Swamp Thing. Which means that if we're fully running this idea, then it's not like there's the Justice League or Batman to come fix things. It's just Danny, John Constantine in his own dead body, his son Noah who is mute, doesn't seem to know american sign, and doesn't know he's John’s son, and Nat, John's "bodyguard" with a hair-trigger temper.

So, yes to a Constantine vivisection/disection, yes to Danny having to run from home bc he's just "stolen" a "government resource", and yes to Danny either having to run off without his friends or tell them and drag them on the run too. Also yes to not just having an easy way to solve the government situation (especially bc John and co are also wanted for murder).

I'm just saying that there's never been a better time to write a darker or angsty Constantine and Danny Phantom crossover.

Phase 1 Superman: Legacy to kick off it will be a superman movie, heroes are referenced but this is a superman movie.. the villain will be metallo cause we're all tired of lex and zod

Batman: Lonely Place of Dying (introduce Tim Drake, Dick will already be Nightwing)

Wonder Woman 1944 (introduces the JSA, Steve and Etta Diana will help found the JSA, the villains will be Villainy Inc and introduce various of Dianas rogues)

Justice League International Movie(introduces Wally and other heroes and expands on the universe)

Flash Movie(Wally West the villain being Vandal Savage and will adapt the Savage Velocity storyline, Wally will deal with the weight of the mantle, linda will be introduced along with the McGees)

Phase 2

Superman Last Son (an adaptation of the Last Son storyline and will introduce Chris Kent)

Hal Jordan GL Movie based on Sinestro Corps War

Batman: Knightfall (an adaptation of the Knightfall storyline and will introduce Bane and Azrael)

Supergirl: Earth Angel HBO Series (Linda Danvers series, an adaptation of Peter Davids run, Kara makes a cameo at the end)

Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals (this will take inspiration from Perezs run while being its own thing while the villainy inc were the villains of the first film for this one the villain will in fact be Circe, it'll show Dianas relationships with Donna, and her daughter Lyta.. and wanting to save her husband, old and ailing Steve Trevor)

Young Justice (Introduces Superboy, Wonder Girl, and Impulse, it will be self contained while adapting Peter Davids run)

Hellblazer (Mostly Based on Mike Careys run and self containedl)

Teen Titans(60s' esque series based on the fab five everything aesthetically looks 60s but there's modern technology villain will be Mr Twister)

Blue and Gold HBO series (literally a buddy cop)

JSA (After the Events of Wonder Woman Gods and Mortals the JSA Return and get back together, their history uncovered, it will have them come face to face with a villain they long thought dead Per Degaton)

I've had weird feelings about this run for a bit, so I decided to look at the solicits all together and...am I the only one who gets a weird vibe from these?

One and two feel pretty normal and true to what happened in book. Issue 2 is a little overdramatic, but that's how you get people to buy. No problems here, good hype, though I do think it's hilarious that issue one is billed at 28 pages, which means that of the rest of the issues it's the only one not filled with ads.

Issue 3, the numbers have gone up, the description has gotten small, and this was also where I started to question just what was happening. This was where this series started telling 'stories about the American dream' in overlong framing devices that really don't have anything to do with anything.

For me, Issue 4 is Issue 3 done correctly, and the solicit feels fine. It's sparse on the details because we're doing a mystery, but I thought it felt a bit rushed. I think in the previous run, this owuld have been a two parter much like Scrubbing Up or Britannia Rules the Waves, and I think it would have been better served that way, but whatever, this isn't about my feelings.

Issue 5, my second favorite main cover and least favorite issue so far, feels deeply misleading considering what we actually get out of the issue. Issue 6 also doesn't really tell us anything that's the actual main focus of the book.

But then BOOM!

Issue 7 comes along and I was genuinely surprised that we were getting more issues, since I hadn't heard that the books were selling especially well, but I don't have the sales figures to back it up. Once again, the solicit is technically accurate, but I'm noticing a trend of the 'he's a corpse! he's got to deal with that!' in the solicit and the comic...not actually doing that in any meaningful way.

Issue 8 has the smallest solicits of the entire run and nothing meaningful happens. We could have scrapped this entire comic and gone straight to LA, but for John Constantine: Hellblazer, he hasn't really done any blazing of Hell in this book, so I suppose it was necessary?

Issue 9's solicit is a lie and a nothing burger. It tells us nothing, and for good reason, because once again, NOTHING PLOT RELEVANT HAPPENS.

I'm living for the Hanged Man tarot cover of Issue 10, but I don't know about number 11's solicit. It's the final issue, why isn't it beefier? Why doesn't it SELL the finale?

I have suspicions, thoughts and theories, but all of it basically amounts to 'not enough oversight'. Most of my problems with these books amounts to the fact that the story feels like it wasn't finished when they started producing the comic (That's a thing in the industry, I know, but it's also not a good sign for longevity or future sales, so I don't know why it's a thing), and that unlike the previous run, Spurrier doesn't seem to really have anything to say beyond 'look at how bad America is!' and it just feels very out of touch.

It also feels like we've opened the story to get more traditional characters involved without thinking about the ramifications of adding them. This story didn't need Dream, it didn't need Etrigan, it didn't really even need Swamp Thing. I still like the inclusion of Swamp Thing, but at the end of the day, this run feels like it's not interested in John Constantine, which is a problem when it's called John Constantine: Hellblazer and not 'Wizards in America: We Fuck Shit Up'.
