Saw an ask about an apparent problem of people drawing Qiu whiter than he is and whitewashing. With that in mind, I think you should hold the same standard for Tamarack for artists that draw her darker than she is to outright black. Tumblr and Twitter in general have an obsession with coloring traditionally white/pale characters the complete opposite race or adding details like kinky/coiled hair and see no issue with it but raise hell the moment a poc is one hue lighter. It erases their identity just as much as everyone says whitewashing does but everyone constantly falls back on the "only whites can be racist so changing their identity in art is okay!!" pipeline

Tamarack comes from a German family and is white, so please take the same level of importance when artists "blackwash" her or any other character in your series.

You know generally, I don’t like to use this blog to as a place to act like I’m the best, most correct person in the world and respond to things where I’m simply telling an anonymous person they’re wrong. I’m just someone who has people following me because they like the stories this company makes.

However, this is something that people should know. If our POC players draw our characters having a darker skin tone than they do in-game and/or give them a different hair texture, that’s alright. I’ve fallen off on reblogging stuff on Tumblr but it’d still be liked or reposted on Twitter.

Whitewashing means far more than the literal act of a single individual making someone look white in a fanart. If a trans player wanted to headcanon a cis character was trans, that’s one thing. If a cis person decided to take the only trans character for miles and insist they are, in fact, cis, well that’s another matter entirely. Your experience with your race and your experience based on sexuality or gender aren’t the same things, it’s not a one-to-one comparison at all. But can people who don’t get it at least start to see how there can be a difference in impact here?

The people who are oppressed in this country aren’t hurting you by trying to enjoy the media that most of the time intentionally excludes them. POC weren’t the ones dehumanizing white people in horrific ways. The overwhelming majority of stories and representations of heritages out there have been and still are white people’s already. Anyone reading this who was thinking along the lines of what’s in this ask need to get comfortable understanding and accepting that. And if you don’t, maybe you should find another game because I’m not going to “protect white identities” from being drawn as people of color. In fact, I think it’s actually really nice if our characters are fun and comforting to people of color so much so that they’d like to imagine those characters being included in their own culture. I think it’s strange that someone would be angry about it.

Okay, so, I've noticed a lot of discourse between canon and fanon for the DC fandom (particularly the Batfam) and I agree with elements of both sides, disagree with some too, and understand but don't necessarily agree with certain things.

Like Romani Dick Grayson for instance. I agree that the canon portrayal of it was utterly appalling, mostly because it was written by someone (Devin Grayson, if I'm remembering correctly) with clear biases who had done very little research, as what was written was almost completely based on harmful stereotypes.

As someone who's not white (or straight), I know what it's like to be misrepresented in media like this, how confusing and hurtful it can be. So what I'm writing next isn't coming from a privileged place of 'suck it up and stop being a snowflake.' It's just my perspective which may be flawed and I'm open to being corrected if I'm missing anything.

Also, disclaimer, while I'm not white, I'm also not Romani, so I'm definitely not an authority on any of this.

So, let's get started:

A lot of people say that fanon shouldn't make works with Romani Dick Grayson due to it's origins. While I understand that, I also disagree.

Because most works I've read where Dick is Romani tend to be well researched and coming from a place of love and respect, unlike canon. They also do what they can to avoid falling into tired tropes or harmful stereotypes, again, unlike canon.

Of course, any work where the person who's creating it isn't the race/ethnicity that they're representing may not be perfect, because respect and understanding don't always go hand in hand. But I think that so long as they're willing to listen to constructive criticism on the issue from those with the perspective they lack, then it shouldn't be too much of an issue?

If fanon were doing the same thing as canon did with this representation, then I'd be against it. But instead, they're trying to make something good out of canon's mess. Though I could be missing something so please feel free to comment or message me if I am.

To me, fanon presenting Dick's Romani heritage with the love and respect the original author should have is similar to when fanon explores the sexual assault storylines that occurred in DC with the gravity and care the original writers failed to.

Now, in cases where they write Cass as a glorified prop, Duke as a generic background character, or Damian as a feral creature in need of "domestication," I totally get where people are coming from with wanting to shut that down. It's lazy, harmful, racist and gross as hell. I don't fuck with any of that.

But with Romani Dick I don't see (again I could be missing something so please tell me) many, if any, harmful stereotypes in the majority of fanon works.

Which is why I think Romani Dick Grayson can be a good thing when in the right hands. But, as someone who's not Romani it's hardly my place to say what the right hands are, this is just me saying what I've seen, if I'm wrong, then that truly is my bad and I apologise in advance.

I recently finished disco elysium. Like a day ago? It was a pretty cool game maybe I will replay it. I don't know if I "connected" with it as much as the fandom but I definitely understand why ppl felt so attached to it. At first I didn't know shit about the game literally at all I put my points mostly into logic and encyclopedia and little bit of pain ther/hand eye later on in the game. I started to realize at the beginning that the game was a heavily literature game and sometimes I don't hate games like that I'm ngl I will skip dialogue especially at the time I'm like "I got a case to do". Um but when I went into the library at the start of the game I realized encyclopedia gave u most of the time random facts about shit that wasn't necessarily "important" I didn't mind but when prompts would come up "in the mind" sometimes logic or ency would jump in and I'd say to myself this is pretty irrelevant right now and laugh about it. It's like my own mind was distracting me which is pretty funny cause I relate irl. I definitely felt the "deepness" of the character's dreams I've recently been haunted by my dreams. And realizing I'm not just some stupid ass cop and I had some darkness so deep the dream sequences were actually "shivers" but so interesting and pretty. Sometimes I definitely felt like I didn't understand but some parts of me did and "didn't". Maybe some of it was just for aesthetics. But it fit. It definitely made me interested in replaying the game for sure but idk when I will cause again the dialogue can be pretty heavy at times replaying it I wouldn't want to miss certain stuff. Also (correct me if I'm wrong I don't mind) but I felt like when he kneels in front of the mural of that figure I think she reminded him of his wife and I picked that option just cause. But I didn't realize he saw her as this all mighty being. Until the "final boss" of the dream sequence when she's leaving him. It was pretty sad being in love with someone and still not getting over it. How vulnerable it leaves u. I felt Harry's pain but honestly when the game was ending it made me feel like "maybe things aren't so bad for me" cause we solved the case I was happy with my choices letting the blonde hair girl go. And not seeing ruby shoot herself in the fucking face. I liked that I was super inquisitive than I thought I'd be. Something as simple as taking a mug and showing it to a "semi racist" lol and figuring out he had a piece of the armor. That's something I really loved about the game no lead was untouchable or insignificant. I kinda wish I got to see what happened in the end but I guess u can infer. I felt like The union guy was using us from the start so I didn't get the 2 ppl sigs (but I got 2 random drunks) so I didn't know if still count toward the construction stuff. And honestly him thinking we'd do whatever he wanted cause I was a dumbass cop was fitting b/c as the player I didn't know who to trust, I just wanted to figure out the case and have some resources since I was bone dry in a bender I had no memory of. All in all the game was interesting as hell if u like story driven rpg. Choices matter type deal. I hated that ppl genuinely hated the blonde hair chick cause she lied. I think it's such a stretch cause yeah it was a bit of a run around she was helpful to the case.(please I'm not looking for debates) I'm just saying she had her reasons for lying. And I wasn't surprised she later on left. I wish we could've helped them more it felt nice helping them even if I helped them "escape" they weren't bad ppl. Most of the revachol ppl weren't just different. I never actually "hated" anyone in the game lol. Everybody was poor and had some attitude but not bad I liked most of the characters tbh. Kim was my nigha for sure and the fact u could actually take the jackets from those dudes was pretty funny. Uh yeah good game cool game. The fucking phasmid showing up AT THE END OF THR GAME I WAS LIKE WTF?? Lol we actually got a picture of it too. I understand and agree. In the grand scheme of things, it means nothing. You are absolutely correct. However.

I've been in this situation. I used to write for a magazine. I was severely underpaid for the work I was doing and the knowledge I was bringing to the role. However, the editor was a racist, sexist, homophobic arse. Every article was an argument.

I stayed in the job because I told myself that when I DID win those arguments, I could bring more diversity to the audience. That the audience would benefit from learning more about some of these incredible women. And I think, on some level, that was true.

However, I also felt contaminated and a little ashamed to tell people I wrote for this magazine-- because so many people in my industry knew what he was like and what his attitudes were. I was barely paid anything for what would take over a month to research and write. But that wasn't the biggest problem. Eventually, I just felt like I was slowly being poisoned by staying. It felt like a fungus growing over my skin. I'd feel sick all the time when it was time to start researching and negotiating on what I was going to do.

Did my taking a stand and leaving make a difference to anyone except me? Nope.

Was I replaced without even a single thought? Yes.

Did I finally feel like I was no longer being contaminated by this man and his 19th century ideals? Yes.

It was very heavy weight on me that was keeping me on the bottom of the ocean. I cut the rope, and could finally swim to the surface. Did I save the world? No.

Did even one reader care that I left? Did the editor? No. Did the knot of poisonous anxiety finally leave my chest and stomach? Yes.

In a similar situation to Ann Telnaes, Prof Dorothy Bishop resigned from the very prestigious Royal Society because they've taken Elon Musk on as a fellow. She got nothing out of quitting. But she took her stand where she believed she had to, and I respect the hell out of here for walking away. (Please read the link on her name for her blog entry.)

I cannot speak for Ann Telnaes, or for Professor Bishop, but I suspect they both felt something similar.

1) for the person out there who is leaving the job, they're showing themselves as a person of integrity, and I have to hope that someone else with integrity will see that and approach them for a better job.

2) even if that does not happen, I genuinely respect anyone who is willing to burn their bridge and take a stand against something they know is wrong-- even if it gets them nothing. Integrity is not about what someone wins. 9/10, when people do something like this, they are doing it for themselves. And I respect that.

3) i can't speak for you, but when things are a complete hell hole, like right now, and all we see is corruption rewarded, and seeing domino after domino fall? Watching even one person --knowing it will fuck then over, knowing it could destroy their career-- stand up and say 'no?' I think that is important to see.

Yes. Grand scheme of things? Ann Telnaes walking out will do nothing to WaPo. They may lose a few subscriptions, but the world is not going to change much. Professor Bishop will be replaced, and life will go on. I don't think either of them are under any delusion that quitting will stop the corruption going on in the world. I certainly was not when I left the magazine I wrote for.

But if Ann can now sleep at night knowing she's done the right thing? If Dorothy can breathe because she feels she has done the right thing?

That matters.

To me, seeing the world burn-- and even one person who says 'I will not light this match' and walking away? That matters. If for nothing else but to believe that there is at least a few people in the world who will take a stand. Even when they know it won't change anything.

You are right. Ann will be easily replaced, just as i was. Dorothy has probably already been replaced. The world will move on, no one will remember or care next week. But Ann and Dorothy will probably sleep better at night, and so will I.

Maybe someone else will see this, and do the same. Maybe not.

Sometimes you don't save the world. You just save yourself. And sometimes that is enough.

Hi just wanted to say that I really like the way you think about Damara.

Like I really like her, but I kinda of hate her character because of the way Hussie handles her.

Hey, I’m glad you like my thoughts on Damara! It means a lot, really! She, like all of the Alpha Trolls, has fantastic potential, though it was mostly squandered by them being written by… Well, Hussie. Genuinely, I think if she wasn’t written with such heavy-handed Fetishism and Misogyny, she would have honestly been one of the best characters in that specific cast! Alas, we can’t all have nice things, I suppose…

Her design always struck me the wrong way, too. You can tell she was designed without any due respect or sensitivity in mind- Hussie wasn’t designing her with “Japanese Woman” in mind, he was designing her with “Generic Eastern Asian Woman” in mind. She’s a stereotype in aesthetic, basically, and it’s written plainly and shamelessly across the entirety of her character design.

Hussie seemed to have been going for a “Pseudo-Traditional Oriental” Aesthetic for her, but it kind of just sucks, lol. Like, Racist execution aside, it’s incredibly plain, and nothing about it truly makes sense! Her shirt almost reads as Hussie halfheartedly making an attempt at drawing a Qipao, which could have been a very interesting display of her being a Time Player, considering those are essentially Flapper Dresses that are constantly evolving over time but… That doesn’t seem intentional. I am not about to give Hussie undue credit. Considering everything else about Damara, they probably just drew the most “Generic Eastern Asian” outfit they could think of and called it a day. It doesn’t even fold over the body- the neckline and the stripe going down the body aren’t folds, they kind of just look… Printed on. Even with all this aside, the Qipao is something that belongs more to Chinese culture than it does Japanese culture.

The hair hurts me in its level of stereotypicality, but it seems like a natural progression of whatever was going on with Aradia’s hair. I just wish the bastard didn’t complete the look with the Totally-Not-Chopsticks. Literally any other style of Kanzashi would have worked. Hell, it could’ve even been one hairpin that just splits off into prongs at the top to resemble the symbol for Aries, but… Nah, gotta have that chopsticks look! Painful, painful thing.

Cancel Culture and “Educating” On Twitter

WARNING: THERE IS A LOT OF BIAS AND OPINIONS IN THIS, I WAS JUST RANTING MY THOUGHTS ON TWITTER.

Before quarantine, many content creators were not as big as they are now—Dream, Tommyinnit, Tubbo, Ranboo, Corpse, so on so forth. They have grown enormously ever since the start of lockdown. With growing that fast in under a year, a vast fanbase starts to form as well. Twitter has now almost wholly controlled the MCYT fandom (Minecraft Youtubers) and having at least one to two things on the trending tab about their content creators. Many things can go wrong with a huge fanbase. But having a fanbase that is controlling a big social media site makes it worse. We have seen some of those moments throughout this year.

Twitter has two sides when they want to give content creators criticism. It’s either “educating” them with threads or just bluntly saying how they need to get better. However, both things start with the “trigger warning” represented like this: //(insert content creator name) neg. The neg is short for negative. Many of those negative thoughts get trending whenever a content creator does something their fandom doesn’t like. It’s almost expecting them to be perfect. They analyze every tweet and move their content creator makes. Once they finally find them trip a little, they announce it. Now there are some relatively rare times where Twitter is correct. As in making content creators stop some type of ACTUAL hurtful behavior. (when I refer to actual I mean behavior that affects EVERYONE on social media, not just Twitter. So, when people on other social media sites are talking about it, and are having similar views.) In this situation, you would expect them to use the educating type of idea. Well, no. Twitter users like to make it more threatening, and from what I understand, it makes the content creators understand better…? This is just wrong and disgusting to find these tweets about these small mistakes these content creators make.

Talking about those content creators. Each of them resolves the problem(s) differently. It’s either writing a lengthy apology on Twitter or apologizing on stream. Sometimes, their apologies are well made, and Twitter is happy. But if they are not good enough, people would tweet things as in, “what a half-hearted apology” or “what type of apology is that”. Usually, those apologies that aren’t the best are like that because of constant Twitter pressure. Yup, who would have known. If a content creator is still active during the trending of their name, like trying to get a video out, Twitter will start attacking them. In short, Twitter expects the BEST apology in a short amount of time. What they don’t understand is that content creators also need to figure out what the hell they did wrong. It’s not easy. Twitter doesn’t understand the stress of having thousands of people constantly attacking you on the spot. Twitter just thinks they know.

Now, you see how I keep referring to Twitter and only Twitter. Well, on other platforms like Tumblr and Youtube, people have very different opinions compared to Twitter. If it’s something to do with people of color (POC), Twitter is the one to over-react in these types of situations, while POC on other platforms seems to just laugh at that joke. Most of these “over-reactions” are because most of these people tweeting are white, not POC. Pretty much, it’s just white people speaking for POC. To make it clear, if you are someone who is ACTUALLY hurt by what the joke targets, go ahead and voice your opinion. It's just, I HATE IT when white people speak for POC. Expressed by many POC, they don’t like that and never will. So, in short, Twitter is just a place with overly sensitive users. (haha)

Now, my opinion on this whole thing. As a POC, most of these jokes that seem to hurt Twitter are honestly not that bad; they are pretty funny. Sometimes, I don’t understand how people get so overly sensitive over those jokes. I'm not saying that you can't hate on them. It's human nature, you gotta at least dislike something in life. I've seen it many times, people on Twitter like to put a trigger warning to the person and content creator Schlatt. Haha, yea, A REAL PERSON. I get it, he has made some REALLY messed up jokes, that I don't even find funny, but putting a trigger warning. Come on now. The real problem with Twitter I have had for a long time is how they can take things WAY TO FAR.

Two good examples are the Karl Jacobs drama and Tommyinnit drama. Karl Jacobs is a friend of the famous Youtuber, Mr. Beast, and a part of the DSMP (Dream SMP). Some old tweets were resurfaced about Karl supporting a content creator that has said slurs and very racist jokes. Of course, Twitter starts their routine by trending the two words, “karl neg.” This is trending for a few days. Eventually, Karl begins to stream for this whole drama on Twitter. His apology was acceptable, but the thing that pissed me off was when someone had called Karl asking him if he had eaten. Twitter had affected Karl’s health, causing him to starve himself. This is quite similar to what happened to Tommy. Twitter had affected his health, but instead of apologizing, they use that against him. Tommy streams on his alt account, and the stream was just a QandA stream. Eventually, they hit the topic of “tommy neg.” (He streamed a day after tommy neg was trending) He starts apologizing but started mixing his words up. He was very nervous and anxious about the whole thing. Why do you think he was scared? Twitter! Haha… He starts going on the topic of him going to therapy. A few minutes, tommy neg is trending AGAIN. Two days in a row. On the first day, there were some good tweets about whatever Tommy had done, but the second one was just stupid remarks towards Tommy. People on Twitter used his anxiety and therapy talk against him. They were still getting mad at him. This was vile to see and read. Who has the guts to use someone’s mental health problems against them? Oh well, that’s Twitter for you. Continuing about Tommy’s alt stream, there were multiple times when he looked like he would have a panic attack or just start breaking down. His whole stream lasted for about an hour. Eventually, tommy neg was filled with people with the same opinions as me. Such as how horrible it was to see people use his therapy against him.

In short, Twitter has become a very toxic place for both people in the fandom and their content creators. They are affecting mental health as well. Having many white people speak on our behalf in these jokes or stereotypes is tiring. We understand you have the privilege, but please use that privilege when it is ACTUALLY needed. Honestly, I find it so funny yet heartbreaking that white people are over here trying to "teach" a GAMER about how to be better when they can use that "white privilege" for other topics that are ALSO discussed on Twitter. (yea! other topics are discussed on the platform! I was even surprised) The DSMP fandom on Twitter is just a place of overly sensitive users.

Hi! If you, like me, are a white person who looks at and gets justifiably angry at shit like the literal return of segregation and the murder of innocent BIPOC, you 1, probably care a great deal about BIPOC and 2, want to do something about it. Here's a lil bit of Allyship 101 if you still need that push to be loudly, proudly anti-racist (BIPOC friends, if I get anything wrong please correct me and I will amend my statement).

It is way long past time that we fucking listen to BIPOC and what they need from us, and use our privilege for good rather than subjugation.

Use your voice, let racist assholes know that you will not tolerate racist asshole behavior, be aware of and accountable for your own privilege, and most importantly, do what you can to protect those who are in danger.

If you see someone in danger, HELP THEM. If you see someone being a racist asshole, CALL THEM OUT. If you have relatives and/or friends who propagate racism, CALL THEM OUT. I know it's way too fucking easy to look the other way, and that potentially saying the wrong thing is scary, but it's long, LONG past time to fucking STAND THE FUCK UP with your fellow humans in their time of need.

Educate yourself on BIPOC history and cultures. You do not have to know everything, but you absolutely should know the basics and BIPOC are sick and tired of explaining shit to every single white person who doesn't know what the hell Tulsa refers to or why Columbus Day is a problem. That being said, if you have specific questions, and need to ask, do so in a manner that is both respectful and mindful of the person you are asking. If nothing else, Google can certainly help.

DO NOT speak over BIPOC, DO NOT speak for POC. Speak WITH them, and fucking LISTEN to what they need, then carry the message forward. If you say/do something wrong and they tell you it was wrong, do not get butthurt. Apologize, correct the behavior, and move forward.

We are to be allies. Not saviors. Not heroes. Not leaders. Allies. Yes they need our help, and have done for far longer than any of us have been alive. But they do not need our pity or our charity or our leadership. They can and have been leading the fight for racial justice, and will continue to do so. We are here to assist them in their struggle, to help ease the burden, and to fight fights (both physical and social I should add) that are safe for us but unsafe for them.

Look out for the people around you, listen to them, and realize that this is a fight that can only be won by working together and remembering above all that this is not about us.

Safety Announcement Part 2:

Hello mutuals, followers, and strangers! Recently, Mississippi and Florida have started to want to resurface Jim Crow, with Mississippi wanting to pass that awful law and Florida's governor, Ron Desantis, not wanting anybody to learn about critical race theory and banning our books of our history. Because I believe other states, especially southern ones, are going to try to reenact this law, I am giving you a safety announcement.

All African Americans and other POC ethnic groups should be very careful when going out. Have any sort of defense, alarm, or spray on you in the case of dangerous racist individuals targeting you. Do not go out at night, regardless of whether you need to go to the store, gas station, etc. Make sure the area you live in isn't racist, and if so, put defense systems in your home. If your area is too dangerous, I suggest you look at the resources I provided below, which are the best I could find, to see which state is better to move to.

As a POC fan, I'm going to add my two cent although apparently poc opinion doesn't matter if you don't agree with a particular narrative. 🤔🤔🤔 hence the reason why I didn't voice anything before cause fandom made it seem like my opinions are invalid. But hey shouldn't let that stop me?

There's difference between criticism/feedback and harrassment, too many people in the fandom can't tell the two apart. Incessantly being rude and harassing creators to write/draw a certain way because you don't like something is NOT the same as providing feedback and explaining the reasoning for it. There are some excellent metas here about racism/homophobia/Islamophobia in fandom that does an amazing job dissecting the issues WITHOUT being rude or displaying toxic behavior. Thank you to those that created those.

(Highkey I'm realizing there is a problem in fandom of people misusing labels as a guise to push their preference. Please, I read the metas about and I understand problematic patterns but also how is forcing bottom position joe also not racism or fetishization? I can use similar arguments in reverse, all brown people must be subjugated by white people? If you like bottom Joe, that's totally fine because that's just your preference and not some racist intention behind it.)

Also the lines of "just accept criticism and make edits, it shouldn't be hard" especially in context of artists is...how should I say 🤔🤔🤔 ignorant of art creating process. It's frustrating when people assume ART IS EASY. Do you know how hard it is to draw? Get proportions right? Get colors correct? Please if it's that easy, draw it yourself. Secondly, on this note, in this very tag, I've seen both "YOU'RE RACIST FOR COLORING JOE TOO LIGHT" and "YOU'RE RACIST FOR COLORING JOE TOO DARK". 🤔🤔🤔 please try picking out colors for skin yourself and see how you get 30 different shades depending on where you eyedrop and lighting. Apparently no matter what you do even to improve won't be good enough though 🤷‍♂️

If I hear complaints about there's only top Joe content, I'm going to say you and I must be in very different fandoms. The distribution is fairly even with some leanings to Top Joe if you ACTUALLY read the fics on AO3. And no, don't make the argument over how many are tagged top joe vs bottom joe BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T ALWAYS TAG IT. smh the bias is real. It's not unanimous as some think. AND I seen a fairly decent amount of fics that were booker x joe, so please don't come to me saying it's only nicky being shipped with booker. What do you say about that? Why are those fics okay and doesn't warrant discussion about this beautifully established relationship? Because oh one of them is a POC so it's fine???? 🤔🤔🤔

AND bold of you to assume that my preferences are based on RACE. As if I only like Nicky because he's white? And I like Joe as top because he's brown? What if I like Nicky because I just like snipers with vintage eye bags that make ominous word drops randomly? Wtf is this narrowing these characters down to just skin colors. They are so much complex than that. You think I wouldn't like seeing Nicky railed if their colors were switched? 🤔🤔🤔 and the focus on Nicky's struggle with religion, isn't that because most people on this hell site are from western society so they have some sort of experience with Christianity? so they write about that AND not try to make presumptions about a religion they don't know much of?

Lastly, when you google shirtless marwan vs shirtless luca, you get vastly different results? Maybe that might have a factor in people's perception of body type image? 🤔🤔🤔 and maybe not racism that has been going around.

I work for Disney, but I’m a grown ass woman, and I’m going to say what I want.”

Summer laughed and shook her head. “As others have pointed out as well, yes, we have a gym in our house. I 1000% acknowledge the fact that having the resources that I do as a celebrity and someone who has money puts me in a different category. Hell, my husband has a whole fitness app. I recognize that. If I wanted to keep up with my workouts, emphasis on wanted, I could have. I own up to that, but I just didn’t feel like it, and that’s okay. What’s not okay is to send and leave mean messages calling me all kinds of names.”

Summer had thick skin. She always had. Growing up with her family, who always ensured to feed her self esteem and make sure she knew that she was beautiful, definitely paid off. It was just a combination of quarantine and not having a lot of opportunities to keep herself busy with work that had her feeling some type of way.

“And that’s something else I wanted to bring up.” She blew out another breath and tried to gather her emotions. This was the subject she was almost certain she’d grow teary eyed discussing. “I love my husband to death. My children are everything. Christopher’s family is like my own, but— I haven’t seen my family, like my mom, grandma, brothers, etc in almost a year.” She paused, dwelling on that. Almost an entire year since she’d been able to physically hug and interact with the people who made her who she was. “And I’ve always made it clear how much I fucking love my family. I live in Australia. I can’t do a drive by with grandma so I and my kids can at least see her on the doorstep.” She quieted again, eyes darting off as she quietly cursed. “I’m trying really hard not to cry right now.”

I feel her pain. I live in Europe, and my family is in the states. This quarantine has been brutal.

My grandma died from COVID, and I couldn’t even go to the funeral. Summer is bringing up a good point.

“Damn,” Summer chuckled bitterly and wiped at the tears that fell. “I’m okay, I promise. I just bring this up because quarantine has also been very hard for me in that aspect. At certain points, I’ve been down, I’ve been in my head a lot, and I just was not, for the most part, in a space where I felt like I had to keep up my fitness regimen. And that’s okay. I put my mental wellbeing ahead of making sure my body is socially acceptable. Sue me.”

I really appreciate her honesty.

Summer never goes beyond surface level in interviews, so seeing her this vulnerable is really surprising.

Are we supposed to feel bad for her? She’s rich. She can afford whatever help she needed.

“And let me make this clear too, I have an amazing husband who is so patient and so kind. He’s one of the best people I can go to when my anxiety hits, so I don’t want this to come across as me complaining that I’ve been alone. I have him and our children. I just miss the rest of my family. That’s all.” She dried her eyes and started to read the comments, unsurprised by the mixed reaction. She expected as such and was unaffected. At least until she saw one comment.

Summer’s jaw dropped as she caught the last comment, swiping up to click the name and make sure that she was reading correctly. “Christopher, what the hell are you doing on my live?”

Evans brows furrowed. “Hemmy is here? Shouldn’t he be working?”

“That’s what I want to know,” Summer supplied. “And how long have you been watching?”

“Get out of here.” He waved her off and reminded. “I’m not the one who constantly causes near fires when in the kitchen.”

Summer adjusted her phone and checked the time on the clock on the wall. It’d been a while since the kids were away at school, and she didn’t want to get so caught up that she was late picking them up.

“Hi,” she greeted in a soft voice with a small smile.

“Did you just—I swear to god, it’s always something with you.” Summer rubbed her temples and shook her head. Christopher smiled in response. “Why aren’t you working?”

“I am.”

“Yes.”

“If you’re working, how are you talking to me?” She asked, sassily.

“Umm, a little thing called multitasking, ever heard of it?”

“Wow. You are an asshole.”

Summer rolled her eyes at the typical nature of the comments. These were the reasons she limited her time on social media and especially stayed away from reading the comments. Her attention was redirected to the top of her phone. It was a text from Christopher asking her to call him.

“But we’re—oh, I get it.” She realized he wanted to talk to her, not her and her tens of millions of followers. “Alright, guys, I’m gonna get off here so I can talk to my husband, alone.”

“She just doesn’t want to share me with you all, that’s all.”

“Don’t even start, Christopher,” she lectured while he laughed and got serious, for a minute tops.

“Hope you all are taking care and staying safe,” he spoke honestly. “And we’ll talk to you soon.”

Summer waved and smile. “Bye, guys. Remember to be kind.” Summer offered a final smile before ending the live. Closing up the app, she moved to open FaceTime and called up Christopher. He answered almost immediately. “You know I hate when you watch my Lives. Now, how much did you see?”

“Enough to know you’re coming to see me tonight.”

She laughed aloud. “Funny.”

“I’m serious, Summer.” Focusing on him, she realized that there was no humor in his voice nor his expression. Summer also noticed that he didn’t have the Thor wig on yet, which was probably why he was able to go live with her. He was waiting to get into hair and makeup. “Leave the kids with Liam. It’s not like he’s doing anything.”

“Christopher!”

“What? Is he not a professional unemployed bastard.”

Summer’s smile remained as she shook her head. “You are so mean.”

“I’ll handle the flight arrangements. You, my beautiful wife, just make sure you get on the jet so I can handle you.”

“Christopher, you’re working. People with everyday jobs don’t just up and show up to their spouses workplace because they miss them or need a break from the kids. That’s how folks get fired.”

Christopher started to move around, walking somewhere, she realized. “What are you doing?”

“Hey, Tike.”

Summer’s eyes widened slightly. “Christoper!”

“Sup, man?” Taika asked casually, as Summer laughed again. Taika Waititi was such a character.

“You mind if Summer comes up for a few days?”

“Sure, man,” he replied almost right away. “Bring the kids and chickens too.”

“I am not bringing those damn chickens,” she immediately protested.

Christopher made a sound. “Ha, so you are coming!”

“I didn’t say that.”

Taika joined Christopher so that he was in camera. “Hey, Summer, why don’t you come on join? You can have a cameo. Chickens, too.”

She rubbed her temples. Taika’s and Chris’s friendship would never not make sense to her. They were cut from the same cloth. “One, hey. Two, I was already in Ragnarok. I’m good on the cameos. Three, what is with ya’ll and those creepy looking chickens?”

“Whoa, creepy? What did the chickens ever do?”

“Exist,” Summer answered dryly. She still hadn’t forgiven Evans and Christopher for convincing her to let the kids keep those damn things. Her home was becoming more and more of a farm with each animal that joined the household.

“Tough crowd, that one, ehh?”

“Always,” Christopher agreed.

“I can hear you both,” she reminded and groaned loudly. Summer would love to spend a few days away from the kids. Chris would be working, yes, but she’d at least get some time for herself. Even better, alone adult time with her husband. That had also been a bit tricky during quarantine because of her rambunctious twins. Still, she disliked using her status as a celebrity to gain things, and this would definitely be a case of using status for pull. “I don’t know….”

Deep in her thoughts, she hadn’t realized that Chris had walked away and returned to wherever he was prior to finding Taika, most likely his trailer.

“What if you only stayed a night?” Chris tried to bargain. “The flight is only an hour and a half. That will give you more than enough time to come here, let me fix you dinner, run you a nice bath, maybe get in the good ole’ horizontal tango—”

“You know I hate when you call it that,” she reminded quietly, admitting. “That does sound nice, though.”

“Or, I can come to you—“

“Absolutely not. Christopher, you’re already doing so much back and forth as it is.” One of the good things to come out of quarantine, to Summer at least, was that it forced many people to take a much needed break. Her husband was one of those people. Christopher had been working nonstop since she met him. Project after project, film after film, many of them Marvel films, which put a whole other layer of difficulty what with the strenuous physical requirements. Even now as he shot Thor 4, he was in the best shape he’d ever been, muscles nearly tearing the cotton of his clothes. He looked amazing, but it was what they couldn’t see that she was starting to grow a little concerned over. Christopher wasn’t as young as he once was. He had to slow down, eventually.

Summer realized this would be a perfect chance to have a conversation about just that with him, which all but led her to her final decision.

“Alright,” she conceded, finger up as she made her demands. “Three days, and I stay at the house while you shoot. We may be returning to normal, but we’re still in a pandemic. I won’t go around anyone except you.”

“So I get you all to myself? Hardly consider that a stipulation.”

“And…we talk.”

“After the horizontal tango—“

“I swear to God, if you don’t stop calling it that—“

“What was that, sweetheart? I wasn’t listening.” She saw that he had paused the screen, causing Summer to remember that she hadn’t even consulted with the babysitter. “Making flight arrangements for you.”

“Shit, let me text Liam and make sure he’s available.”

“He gets reception in the box?”

“Christopher! For the last time, your brother is not living in a box.”

“Do you know that for certain?”

“Goodbye, Christopher,” she prepared to end the call before smiling softly. “I love you, Christopher, and thank you.”

He winked. “I’ll always do anything for you, Summer. Anything.” A beat. “Don’t forget to leave the clothes. You won’t need them.”

Okay I’m a Billy Hargrove fan willing to make a cross tag post [which turned into a 5 part series ] discussing how to treat and respect fans in the strangers things community. I’m hoping to showcase behavior we shouldn’t engage in when we see someone who likes a character who we dislike. I’m also hoping to start a respectful discussion to help anyone on tumblr who doesn’t understand Billy fans but wants to understand them.Let’s hope this doesn’t become overwhelming 😳

Don’t worry I also want to be respectful to those who don’t like Billy because you have ur reasons to not like his character and connect to fiction however you want to connect to fiction. I want to make things clear I’m not trying to make a moral condemnation of anyone who has engaged in the behavior I critic in this post. There are much bigger problems in the world but I’m so passionate about this one because I’m a person of color who connects to Billy’s story arc and the way some antis treat Billy fans is just cruel. Billy fans are real people who exist and their stories have real life consequences. Online harassment in fandom is not excusable because it is still harassment.

Assumptions and cruel judgments of Billy fans

In this Twitter post someone makes the assertion that being a Billy Hargrove fan is a red flag. I’m aware that this is not a tumblr user but I have seen some of this sentiment on tumblr. I will begin by criticizing this post because someone being a fan of a fictional character doesn’t make them and inherent threat to anybody’s personhood. I get that the person who posted this may even agree with what I just argued, that Billy fans aren’t a real life threat, but that’s not what is being communicated at all when someone reads this especially when a fan of Billy reads this. And if someone out there does believe this for one reason or another I’m going to continue to dispute your claim. Some Billy fans might engage in problematic behavior but to hold a layer of apprehension towards all fans of a character because of this might be something you need to reevaluate. Making a moral judgment on real human beings because they like a character is not okay especially if you don’t even know the reasoning.

Just because someone likes a character that might be a mass murderer in fiction doesn’t mean that now they support massacres, correct? Same logic applies here if someone does interpret Billy as racist but still likes his character that does not mean they think racism in the real world is okay ( or bullying, harassment, or anti feminism either) and that does not mean they can’t organize against real world problems effectively.

First things first not every who likes Billy ships Harringrove

As a Harringrove shipper I can only speak for myself and say I could give less of a fuck if Billy is “good” or “bad”. That’s doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to smash king Steve. That’s also doesn’t mean he can’t be queer and it doesn’t mean I can’t like the ship. And it doesn’t mean that I can’t connect to Billy on a disastrously queer level ( got that phrasing from a grade A post on this hell site)

Believing Billy can see the errors in his ways and can heal and become a “good” person… doesn’t have to be a byproduct of being a shipper. it can just be a read someone has of a character so “anon” no disrespect to ya but your thinking is wrong.

Okay this is gonna be lengthy

Fine some Billy fans ignore the shit he did… but that’s not inherently bad. Fans can headcannon Billy into a completely different portrayal than what we see on screen and love him I don’t see a problem with that especially when they aren’t excusing any abuse.

The Duffers brothers failed at exploring racism in their show if that was their intention. Point blank period since this is a form of art it can be interpreted in many different perspectives. Especially if it is not tied to any explicit themes on racism in the text. I interpret Billy’s actions as racist but no one has to do so if they connect to the story in a different manner. I felt the weight of Billy’s “ certain type of people” comment. However it was only and implication not a confirmation. Stop being mad at people for not interpreting something left up to interpretation.The writers didn’t explicitly tackle the issue they wanted to tackle.

This might be helpful 2 know …I interpret Billy as racist, I’m also black, I also Stan Billy Hargrove.

Okay here we go… no-one has to interpret Billy’s actions as being racist so why assume that if someone likes Billy it’s because they’re racist just like him… if they don’t even think he’s racist. I hope that makes sense

I think Billy is racist 4 sure the story flows better for me that way and it makes a lot of sense to me. Now let’s talk about racism in the real world … racism is something that is taught. Racism is a big large system we are all conditioned into. Racism is something we must all unlearn in the real world. So in the fictional world I think there is an entertaining plot line that Billy can go down and unlearn his racism +stop beating up on children Billy 🤦🏿‍♀️. Because I see that potential growth that is why I like his character. Oh and no one ever talks about this but I head cannon Billy as fat phobic because of the “lard- ass” comment so my version of Billy is working through that as well.

I don’t wanna sound all high and mighty I can understand why someone might express this sentiment. I’m not gonna demonize someone who is black like me (black people have dealt with that enough). I also get why you would not even like Billy if you interpret him as racist. [Someone could have the same analysis of Billy as me and still not like him because how we connect to fiction is somewhat irrational.] I would just ask that we don’t jump to conclusions about anyone’s politics because of how they like a fictional character. That we treat other members in our fandom with respect.

I can never and will never excuse racism because if I do I would be turning a blind eye on a system that kills my loved ones. Your allowed to not like Billy Hargrove honestly I don’t see any Billy fans who care? Stop making crude assumptions about people who do Stan Billy Hargrove ur “ joke” is a hurtful misrepresentation.

Coming to your question, yes, unfortunately I know EXACTLY which videos you are talking about. You see, I kind of touched upon this subject in that previous post you are talking about; like the part where I talked about the "positive" Indian comments for that series.

Why do they do that? The answer is simple. Obstinacy. Or should I call it idiocy? I would normally say that it is simply a lack of proper information, awareness or exposure BUT I will not do that here. Here is it definitely WILFUL NEGLIGENCE and here's why I say that: they are on the internet, they are consuming content along with the rest of the world. EVERYBODY else is seeing an issue with something except for them, but they choose to ignore it all and continue to swim in that miniscule little puddle of misinformation and ignorance. They clearly have the option of learning AND they have the right sources for it, BUT THEY CHOOSE NOT TO.

Let's be real, most of the Indian diaspora grew up in EXTREMELY racist or atleast racially insensitive homes. We are NOT taught to take offense about such things and jokes about other people's cultures are simply supposed to be a part of our daily lives. Adding on to this, is the fact that "Indian cinema does it all the time!!", which is also, unsurprisingly, their argument everytime this issue pops up.

So now, in addition to being insensitive about the potrayals of other cultures and nationalities in our films, we are also insensitive about their potrayals of us.

The only time Indians REALLY take offense is when there is direct mockery of religious or political idologies (I don't have to mention which ones). If you react to ANYTHING else, you will be shut down immediately by fellow Indians accusing you of being too sensitive.

Now to ACTUALLY answer your ask, the people who make these videos are basically saying:

"OMG they know India!! This means there is a 100% chance they will come here and meet me at a concert/fanmeeting or whatever and fall in love with me and we'll live happily ever after".

Does this sound ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and delusional? Yes.

Are they aware of this? Kind of.

By doing this, are they completely disregarding the fact that the potrayals are stereotypical, offensive and inaccurate? Absolutely.

Will they admit it and try to educate themselves and correct their behaviours? NEVER.

Instead, they will do EVERYTHING in their power to prevent their comfy little misinformation puddle from turning into a slightly bigger puddle of knowledge and accurate information. Because they would rather propagate harmful misconceptions than learn new things that will completely shatter their juvenile little fantasies and force them to wake the hell up.
