"Flying may kill me, but not flying would kill me worse."
Fred North
This, this is absolutely the best book I have ever read and, sentence after sentence, I am more and more honored to be here reading it
Above all it's the first time ever I feel so deeply in touch with the words of someone I never met, cause page after page, same situations and same obstacles, I can't help but think how much this whole situation represents exactly what happened to me

Description: The daring adventures of a New Zealand search and rescue pilot.'Somewhere, up ahead, a person is bleeding, but you have to put that out of your mind. You have your clock, that person has their own, and in the end, whether the rate at which your clock is clicking matches theirs is out of your control.'John Funnell is one of New Zealand's longest serving search and rescue pilots. Often referred to as a 'search and rescue daredevil', John has just retired after an incredible 49 years flying search and rescue helicopters. He is perhaps best-known for the 800-kilometre mission to save a scientist attacked by a shark on the remote sub-Antarctic Campbell Island, when he set off into the night knowing the distance was twice that of the helicopter's normal fuel range. Clocking an incredible 19,000 hours of flight time, John is a hero to hundreds of victims all over New Zealand. What's more, he's a natural-born story-teller, and his…

I read a thing the other day about the fundamental difference between flying a plane and flying a helicopter is that airplanes are dynamically stable but helicopters are dynamically unstable.
If you are flying a plane you can let go of the controls for a long time and it'll just fly along on its own. You can lose all your engine power and just glide for like 100 miles until you can find a place to land.
A helicopter, on the other hand, is like balancing on top of a column of air. You cannot let go of control at all. If you need to reach something in the cockpit, you have to shift hands and keep grip on the controls. You are constantly making minute adjustments with your hands to keep the blades balanced and your air column directly underneath you. A few seconds' loss of control and you will tip to the point that it's unrecoverable.
Something something maintaining constant, tight control Tommy Kinard's personality something something.

I am officially proposing a BuckTommy hot air balloon disaster date. Buck has a history with hot air balloons and it would be really funny if he’s like “well no it’ll be fine because Tommy’s a Pilot and then naturally something goes wrong and everyone looks to Tommy and he’s like “do you see a joystick anywhere?” And Buck goes 😏 and Tommy is like “not now Evan!!!!”

I was in my house with my mom, when we saw a helicopter fly up just like a meter from the ceiling window (which was strangely huge btw). I tried to take a closer look to find out what’s going on and I realised that the pilot was Elon Musk. He was stalking me.

*We gave our proper farewell on cohost, but to repeat some of it: it was a good place, and we hope we can do something like that again one day. Maybe even something better.
