one thing about Mark is that whether he is at home, at work, or at a clandestine meeting, he is probably getting scolded by the most beautiful woman you can think of. he isn’t even seeking them out and it’s not even necessarily romantic, beautiful women just see him and pick him up by the scruff immediately. ultimate poor little meow meow man

there is not enough femslash in batcest circles. the girls deserve to be just as weird about each other as the boys are. if BruDick gets to be weird father/son/brothers/lovers/friends/rivals/soulmates then it is only fair that Babs/Cass get to be mother/daughter/sisters/lovers too. Something about that deep intrinsic but undefinable love that is born out of trauma, especially if you consider Cass not knowing what healthy love looks like in the first place. i think it's fun and deserves just as much fandom content.
besides that, you can get even more niche with rarepairs like Helena/Steph. Huntress/Spoiler: Blunt Trauma is already a fantastic comic and even though it's their only real canon interaction it has so much potential. very comparable to TimJay in how Helena tries to get Steph to understand her morals and the corruption you could play with it.
Tumblr media
batman: huntress/spoiler: blunt trauma (1998)
that comic also highlights on how both Steph and Helena are outcasts of the Batfamily and don't have the approval of Bruce to be doing what they do in "his city". I think there's so much Potential in Helena taking Steph under her wing because Bruce won't let her in and it becomes a weird codependent toxic sapphic mess. I think the protectiveness Helena feels over Steph from the get-go is so clear and the way she wants to look out for Steph, wants to make sure Steph understands the real world? I love them. Helena should be allowed to steal Steph, actually. I think it'd be fun.
there are a lot of other possibilities too like Babs/Steph or even getting weird with Helena Bertinelli/Helena Wayne and the existential question of "is it selfcest or not." But these two specifically live in my head rent-free, especially Helena/Steph and one day I'll convince everyone else to ship it too.
#batcest#necrotic festerings#how do i tag ships that are almost non-existent#helena bertinelli x stephanie brown#cassandra cain x barbara gordon#as resident huntress fan my answer to the is helena w/helena b selfcest depends entirely on which version of helena wayne you're using.#pre-crisis!helena wayne/pre-flashpoint!helena bertinelli? yes i agrue is selfcest adjacent at least#because helena bertinelli was meant to be an adaptation of helena wayne#if it's jsa (2022)!helena wayne then it's *not* selfcest because they co-exist in the same universe#and according to current lore helena wayne was named after bertinelli and took the name huntress in her honor#which is a *choice* for sure but that's a different post#i still think shipping them is super fun in a “don't meet your heroes” sort of way with helena wayne time travelling#and then potentially running into bertinelli and realizing she's not what wayne thought she was and it being weird toxic shit#as for new-52 helena wayne. i do not acknowledge her and will not comment.#*god* I hate new-52 huntress.#(imo it would be selfcest tho bc they tried to make helena wayne a bertinelli clone. so. there's that.)#i'm going to write a helena/steph fic some day and none of you bitches can stop me#yeah yeah we have stephcass but y'all have sanitized the fuck out of that to convince yourselves it's not batcest and that made it boring.#and helena/babs is neat and all but i prefer helena/zinda when it comes to BoP ships#i should've included panels for cass/babs but it's been a while since i read batgirl (2000) so none immediately came to mind#i have a *lot* more helena/steph thoughts but no braincell to word them. know i will talk about them again.#they got one whole comic and now i won't let them go#also cass/helena is fun for combating morals and the complicated batgirl mantle#cass wears the batgirl suit *helena* made y'all think i can't make that romantic bc i can and will#if we have robin pile then give me batgirl pile#babs/helena/steph/cass hell throw in bette too.

She wakes some time later, gasping and choking on - on -
On nothing.
She blinks, pushing herself upright in her - bed. She's in her bed.
Her mind is still in the water; her voice still screaming to keep the water out of her airways. She still feels Irving's hand on the back of her head, his fingers threaded through her hair as he held her underwater.
If she didn't know she was Severed; if she didn't know if Seth had removed the Glasgow Block -
It's like coming to after a dream - no, a nightmare. The way her heart pounds in her chest; the way her palms are sweaty - how all of her is sweaty, the way her body shivers against a biting wind that can't reach her from her bed.
It's familiar.
It's far too familiar. The wrong kind of familiar.
She presses a hand to her forehead, as though she'd be able to tell despite her fingers being hers. Except they're cold and soothing on her brow, so she keeps them there for a moment as the continuity knits itself together into something that makes sense.
Irving knew she wasn't Helly.
Irving knew.
-
She walks over to the waterfall, grateful for the sturdy snow shoes she'd insisted Seth provide the Innies. She takes it in. Yes, it's beautiful, and sure, it felt grand to stand at the top of it -
But from where she stands, leaning against the tree - it's nothing in comparison to Niagara. Which the Innies must have never seen, for them to buy Seth's lie so easily.
Of course, he had that way of saying things with authority. It reminded her a bit of her parents; the way they dictated things should be.
She wonders how long she can keep this up. She hadn't considered just how many different ways the innies - her innie - would be lied to. She hadn't anticipated the ridiculousness of those lies and how easily the innies swallow them.
They literally know nothing but what Lumon tells them. Their experiences are limited to that weird cubicle in MDR and the past couple of weeks since she - no, since Helly R walked onto the Severed floor.
Maybe Helly was right to try and kill her. Helena kind of wanted to kill Helena, too.
helena was trying everything she could to act the way she presumes her innie does, watching back all this security footage and probably thinking 'well how hard can it be, we still have the same brain'. then to have it told to her that the one thing that fundamentally gave her lie away was the fact that she was cruel and her innie never was. OUCH! GUT PUNCH!! to try everything you can do to be like this better version of you who people love, but to be confronted with the fact that despite trying so so hard, there is simply something crueler, meaner, harder deeply rooted within you. helena did everything she could to garner the favour of the innies, people with an inherent childlike trusting and innocence. and yet. she's finally confronted with that fact that nothing she can ever do will truly make them believe that helena is the person they love. irv would literally MURDER her just to get to the 'better person' within her. irv then SACRIFICES HIS LIFE just so this better, kinder, gentler doppelganger can have a chance to live. can you imagine being helena knowing all this. it would drive me INSAAAANE

˗ˏˋ stephanie brown accessible entry point
Tumblr media
this is a list of comics to understand the basics of her character! ive seen a lot of people who didnt know where to start to read so ive compiled this list to make it as easy as possible for new readers to get into stephanie brown
who is stephanie brown?
daughter of the criminal and abusive father cluemaster (arthur brown), she became the spoiler to ‘spoil’ her father’s robbery and overall to protect herself and her mother from him. eventually she digs the vigilante life. she becomes robin briefly and is currently one of the batgirls!
as SPOILER:
⟢ secret origins: 80-page giant
this comic /technically/ is set in the future and is steph ‘telling the story of her childhood’ but honestly i find it pretty suitable even with no context and a must read in my eyes to understand her motives and character
⟢ detective comics 647 - 649
her first appearance… with the iconic brick in the face 😭 this comic is not set in a precise timeline, just post-robin 1991 and pre-knightfall so you can read it with no context as well!
⟢ showcase ‘95 #5 (second story)
PLEASE READ THIS i never see it in reading lists and its sooo important to me. it shows steph’s strained relationship with her mother when her dad is not in the picture and briefly some of her school life!
i’d say read robin (1993) afterwards because it consistently features steph, as much as it is ‘tim’s solo run’, but here THE most important stories (they were very hard to pick)
⟢ robin (1993) #3 - 5
her first appearance in the monthly! and lordd the timsteph here makes me sick. tim being saved by steph 🫶 also more on her and her mom as crystal is starting recovery from drug addiction
⟢ robin (1993) issue 15 - 16
not gonna lie, a huge part of me wants me to suggest it because you get to see arthur get his ass kicked by steph (sweet revenge) but theres also steph being saved by tim for a change and more on steph’s relationship with her dad
⟢ robin (1993) #35
this story for me conveys properly the impact that steph’s upbringing had on her sense of justice and morality being fundamentally different from batman and robin’s, something tim and bruce just can’t understand
⟢ robin (1993) #40 - 41
warning / implied SA (ariana ☹️) the story is a two-parter, steph’s side in issue 40 uses diary entries to explain how she feels about the whole vigilante ordeal. issue 41 is more timsteph oriented but it shows tim finally acknowledging his feelings for steph
⟢ huntress/spoiler: blunt trauma
this story happens during cataclysm but its not necessary to read the whole thing + dean’s first appearance 😒 he is the scumbag bastard ‘father of steph’s child’ + helena and steph linkup!!
⟢ robin (1993) #54 and 56-57
BAD CASE OF THE STEPHS MENTIONED + steph and crystal bonding and tim and steph getting together!!! + robin 57 as guilty pleasure :3 their first official date
⟢ robin (1993) #58-65
warning: dixon tackling teen pregnancy. we all know how that goes. remember dean? well steph got pregnant! and that guy bailed on her. dean when i get you. this arc breaks me everytime, steph you deserve the world ☹️
⟢ lewis era robin (1993) aka robin #100 - 120 HEAVY ON ROBIN 111
warning for SA / glimpses on steph’s childhood + dealing with the fact that her father is dead etc etc that will just make you think we should all just kill ourselves yk!!!!
as ROBIN:
⟢ robin (1993) #126 - 128
warning: debatable writing. robin steph! but take everything with like 5 pinches of different salts 😭 its bad y’all but it is essential. dan didio when i get your ass. dan didio when i get youuu
⟢ steph is dead! arc aka batman 634, detective comics 800 and 809, batgirl 62
i fucking hate war games so im not putting y'all through that. here instead: tim being so overcome by grief he can barely react to steph's passing, bruce remembering steph and cass hallucinating her as she is about to die
after that please just imagine that steph came back cause about every issue after her death was the worst ooc writing ever so, again, not putting you guys through that (its tough for stephanie brown fans)
as BATGIRL:
⟢ batgirl (2009)
i wanna say im conflicted about its writing but its about the best thing steph had post-revival. they constantly insult her spoiler legacy so not a fan of that!! but it is essential and i mostly like the rest so whatever :3 steph’s uni arc!
after that honestly nothing happened for her character, so heres on hoping she gets more stuff

An experience I tire of having on Batman comics AO3:
Fanfic Writer: Here’s a story about a character dealing with the trauma of childhood sexual abuse.
Me: Ah yes, a goldmine for angst. Who’s the character? Selina Kyle or Holly Robinson, who were forced into prostitution at a young age while homeless and desperate? Stephanie Brown, who was groomed for molestation as a kid, barely escaped and then had a creepy relationship with an older man that resulted in a teenage pregnancy?
Writer: Actually, it’s Jason Todd.
Me: Oh. Huh. Jason has never been sexually abused in comics canon.
Writer: Yes, but we don’t know that he wasn’t. He was homeless and desperate as a kid! He could have been a prostitute!
Me: Well, that’s… just Selina and Holly’s backstories, but okay. What else you got?
Writer: I have a fic about a character learning to feel secure in a home and found family after an unstable, abusive, deprived childhood.
Me: Cool! That applies to all the aforementioned female characters and Cassandra Cain, who was a homeless vagrant for ten years after fleeing the absolute hell of her upbringing. It’s part of why I enjoy their arcs so much.
Writer: I also have one where a character is acting as the protector of the poor community they grew up in, with a special focus on looking out for kids in similar situations to them, wanting to be there for them in contrast to how the adults in their own life had failed them. They reflect on their past and stuff. You know, how they have hope for this community against all odds. Even if they might have been part of the systematic problems keeping these underprivileged people down earlier in their career, but now they want to atone for that.
Me: This is exactly why Selina become a vigilante instead of just a thief! She did some self-reflection and realised that having made her own fortune, she’d abandoned the lower classes to indulge herself like all the complacent social elites she hates. So she vowed to protect and support the East End, her old neighbourhood (which happens to contain Crime Alley). She and Holly both later ran the Alleytown Kids, a gang of needy children that Selina had been a member of in her day. She even renamed it to the Alleytown Strays. And the idea of becoming what your childhood self needed, both for yourself and all the kids like you today, is foundational to why Stephanie ascending as Batgirl feels so right to me; she went from being a girl sitting on her roof wishing a Bat would save her to being the Bat saving and inspiring kids.
Writer: Yeah, but how does this sound? A hero’s war with depression, self-loathing, even suicidal ideation. They wonder if they can do anything but kill. They carry the pain of being violently murdered, thanks to their own long-lost mother no less, after which they were resurrected and later separately healed in a Lazarus Pit.
Me: I love it! Are you referring to Cassandra?
Writer: Um. Ooh, how about this fic? It has a gritty, tragic, tormented antihero wrestling with the moral complexity of their lethal actions, their fraught relationships with the Batfamily, and how closely they veer to embodying the very evil they seek to destroy. They’re true vengeance in a purer, sharper form than Batman, who they at once emulate and scorn. A hunter stalking Gotham’s worst souls in the night. They go on a beautiful journey to discover some degree of idealism, build stronger bonds, navigate emotional vulnerability and dare to believe that they are not damned or broken, and are still capable of healing as well as hurting. There are also themes of religion and spirituality.
Me: …What religion?
Writer: The antihero is Catholic.
Me: Oh my God. That has to be Helena Bertinelli.
Writer:
Me:
Writer:
Me: All your stories are about Jason Todd, aren’t they?
Writer: No! Some of them are about Dick Grayson or Tim Drake!
I love Jason and Dick and Tim. I adore many fics that revolve around them. But not every story needs to do that. Female characters have just as much grounds for interesting fanfiction, and often decisively more grounds for specific tropes that I often see assigned to the guys.

Bruce tried to avenge Jason, not Dick
This is just a rant about a lil thing that keeps coming up in fics I read. Often, Dick is "forgiven" by Jason because he "avenged Jason" by killing the Joker and Bruce "ruined it". Or Dick is written to have tried to kill the Joker after Jason's death but not Bruce, and Bruce may have tried to stop him.
First of, Dick did not try to avenge Jason. Y'all really want him to be okay with killing and ready to kill to avenge his loved ones, but Dick is better than Bruce, and that also means he is less likely to cross the line. No, Dick did not want to kill Zucco (Apart from the Titans show, but this show's characterization is awful), and no, he did not want the Joker dead. When Dick killed the Joker, it was in a moment of rage because Tim was in danger. He did not plan it and he immediately regret it. Bruce, with the help of HELENA who is fine killing people, brought the Joker back to life for Dick, because it would have broken him. And Dick still hates himself afterward, for killing the Joker even tho he is alive. And, again, he did not do it for Jason.
And, sure, you can have your hc, but the moment they are in conflict with who the character is (Dick is disgusted by the idea of being a murderer, killing someone or letting someone be killed, even the murderer of his brother), then we are going to have a problem.
Now, about Bruce. Upon discovering Jason's body, Bruce was settled on avenging him. It's why he took away every evidence, so he would not have anyone interfere between him and the Joker. He spent the days following Jason's death, and then Jason's funerals, looking for the Joker to kill him. He refused to call Dick because he did not want him to interfere, he was only thinking about his revenge and did not think the emotional importance of telling Dick about Jason.
Tumblr media
The man is not thinking straight. And when he thinks he found where the Joker may be, Superman shows up, telling him that a Gotham's criminal is now under diplomatic immunity and the US gov doesn't want Batman being a bitch about it. And Bruce punches Clark in the face. That's how fucking unstable he is at this point, punching Clark without kryptonite because he is standing between him and killing the Joker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clark learns the Joker killed Jason, and he tries to make Bruce accepts to only kill the Joker, the only justice Bruce is accepting at this point, once he isn't a diplomat. YES, SUPERMAN DID NOT STOP BRUCE. Batman nearly succeeds in killing the Joker, but the helicopter they are in is going down, so Superman saves him. Bruce, the fucking madman he is, obsessed over bringing justice to his boy, doesn't care about his safety, he wants the Joker's body! And when it isn't found, he isn't satisfied but accepts to go home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Joker will come back at least a year later, and with some ptsd from his last encounter with the Bat and escaping death. Bruce, doing better mentally now that he has a new child to take care of (which he sends with his whole class to Japan to protect), is afraid he will kill the Joker. He keeps bringing up to Alfred how much he wants to kill him for TAKING JASON FROM HIM. But Alfred reminds Bruce again and again that he is a good man and he will resist. He does. This was not the last time Bruce faced the Joker after Jason's death and thought about killing him for Jason.
And, let me be clear, I do not expect Jason to know Bruce did that. The only people who know he did that are Clark, Alfred and Bruce himself (who will probably never tell Jason himself what he did). And maybe Dick, if you want to think (like me) that Bruce sat down with him (way later, after Tim is in the picture so Bruce is better mentally) and explained his mental state when Jason died, and how he didn't tell him not because he was trying to push Dick away, but because he was obsessed with killing the Joker he wasn't thinking rationally about his decisions; not to excuse his actions but to explain how it happened.
Dick is better than Bruce, which is why he grieved Jason surrounded by his friends, people that would support him and listen to him. He did not went on a vengeance mission because he had a support system. Was he mad? Yes, but he tried to open about it to others (the Titans, Koriand'r who was his gf,...) Bruce, on the other hand, is one unhealthy mf that immediately isolated himself once Jason died. He stayed in the cave and dedicated himself only to work, taking all his emotions out on beating people up because he was sharing it. And when people tried to talk to him, he would explode the moment they say anything that he could interpret badly (Clark telling him the Joker has immunity, Dick blaming Bruce for Jason's death...) This is why Bruce tried to avenge Jason and then went out every night being extremely violent and suicidal, and not Dick.
Dick did not avenge Jason and he did not try to, but that doesn't make him a bad brother. He cared deeply about Jason's death, but he is not Bruce, he is better, and that means he is also better at handling grief and not become a self-destructive bomb like Bruce was.
Avenging our loved ones is, in Batman & co's comics, demonstrated to not be the healthy way to deal with grief. Revenge isn't the healthy way to deal with lost, it will only lead to more destruction and pain. It will not bring the dead back, it will only add more bodies in the ground, and it will not heal the wounds.

what really kills me about the Diaz parents in this situation is even if I try and look at it from the most good faith perspective possible, it still puts them at a fault. you can argue they did absolutely everything with good intentions and it still doesn’t change that the way they did them was selfish and didn’t truly take their son or grandson into account as people. you can love people and still do wrong by them. from the second they showed up at Eddie’s door already intending to take an upset Christopher with them instead of helping in any other form to when Eddie showed up at theirs and was packing Christopher’s stuff to take him back and Helena was saying that would disrupt his life it was never truly about Eddie’s relationship with Christopher as it should have been. or even really about Christopher himself. but about the relationship with Christopher that they wanted to have. ultimately it’s Eddie’s responsibility as the dad to take action like he did and thank god. but it sure as hell should be on them to not try and undermine him as a father like, annually? not try and shoulder him out of his own parenting when that’s the only reason he even moved 800 miles to be there at all? to not allow people to believe that Christopher is THEIR kid and his accomplishments (and only his accomplishments apparently? only a kid’s successes and wins and trophies?) are a reflection on THEM? on anything THEY did? they did not have to do any of that. and well sorry I was trying but I can’t even lie I have a ton of trouble looking at it from a good faith perspective anyway because Helena looked her son who was working 3 jobs in the face almost a decade ago and told him not to drag his son down with him and apparently never really stopped thinking it. Ramon aligned Eddie’s parental instincts as on par with his and he doubted himself as a father for months afterwards because of the father he had. they had him thinking Chris was thriving without him because. well because I think they genuinely believed that to be true because they always deep down believed he’d be better off with them and had no qualms saying so. never mind what their actual child was going through I guess. never mind that Chris was sitting there hating chess and wanting his dad to come and get him and feeling like he couldn’t tell them. MONTHS. okay I tried.

the critiques of the severance finale wrt essentially (i)markhelly vs (o)markgemma keep hitting weird and ringing misplaced. to me. and i'm trying to articulate why and it's like. i think that the mark (pun not intended) of a valid racial critique is being missed by positing "gets chosen by mark" as the measuring stick that decides if the finale was Good or Bad.
my good faith take is that severance is ultimately working towards that final nirvana of synthesis, with dylanists having been framed as the more emotionally fulfilling, more fair, more peaceful path towards freedom vs the necessary but violent rebellion of mark and helly, both hellyists (and i don't think severance wants us to think they are in the wrong - helena and (o)mark are far more abusive to their innies than (o)dylan ever was. they have dug their heels in and refuse to relinquish their control over their subjugated selves, as opposed to (o)dylan. which is a far more common and expected reaction from those in power.) BUT. but. mark is not yet reintegrated. a complete mark reintegration is going to be an extremely momentous event upon which everything will revolve, when it happens. we are not at a point within the narrative where we can consider mark a single character (yet).
(i)mark has always been the main character. the arc of the show has always been about the innies fighting to first discover and then secure their personhood. severance is a rebellion storyline, an oppression allegory. like christ alive, we got the *stands on a table* we are many, they are few! speech.
(i)mark doesn't know that he (he! the mark synthesis! the mark final form!) loves gemma. i don't care about (i)mark and helly as a ship, i don't care to think about them in Scenarios or AUs or what have you. BUT i care about mark and helly as the vehicle through which severance explores and signifies choice and humanity. i find that deeply moving - that last moment of (innie!) mark chosing himself as an entity separate from (o)mark, chosing even a handful of minutes more of life and love and independence from the powers that be - it's a triumph. the show was always going to lead us here. lumon may or may not try to kill (o)mark, but there's (in the innies minds, at that moment) not a universe where (i)mark and helly get to live. they are in a doomed timeline. they have nothing, not even their flesh belong to them. they are so suffocatingly denied or personhood that to steal even one more moment together they must kidnap their own bodies.
THAT SAID.
that said. i have talked about how annoyed i am that gemma's motivation was "ohh woman can't have baby". i think that writing choice was lazy. believable, sure, and it makes sense within the narrative, but i hate it. it's reductive, it's objectifying. i wish they had given gemma more life beyond "marks dead wife", i wish we had gotten to know her as a person as complex and moody as mark scout.
i am also tired of allegories for oppression being filled with white faces.
the racial problem in the helly/mark/gemma dynamic exists within what i can only think to call the infrastructure of showmaking. with diversity being applied as a coat of paint to the outer edges of a cast, rather than roles being written for non-white people, or letting main characters be non-white. there's no reason why gemma couldn't be white and helly asian, or mark, or all of them, except racism in casting.
ON THE OTHER HAND.
i try not to judge shows before the story is completed. to let a non-white character end a story unhappy or in tragedy might often be an afterthought of racism in storytelling but it doesn't have to be. we have been shown that severance can handle a complex racial narrative with milchick. i am hoping that the same will happen with gemma, either because of critiques currently being made or because they have always planned to address her racial identity in relation to both mark, helly, and lumon, but we haven't gotten there yet.
or they might not.
they might have filled their talking-about-race quota, and the intersection of racism and misogyny might be a tragic, infuriating blind spot in the severance writers room. idk man, maybe we just need to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. only time will tell. and if they fuck it up we will still have our hammers next season

bad communication with asshole rich!abby who you’d been “fake dating” for a couple months. she sees you walk over to someone at a party and feels her heart sink when that model bitch ex comes over to her. this is what she wanted, right? to make her jealous. so why does she feel completely crushed when the girl whispers something alluding to your infidelity in her ear. “you deserve better babe. you deserve me, let’s get back together….” lingers in the air as she rushes out into the street. loosening the buttons on her dress shirt and holding her chest like her heart might fall out if she doesn’t.
you’re right behind her, purse in hand, necklace with her name in a heart dancing as you rush to catch her. “abagail, what’s the matter? where are you going?”
“don’t fucking call me that. my name is abby, i told you i hate being called that. my dad calls me that.”
you know that. you’ve met her father and he adored you. she used to sigh or roll her eyes when you called her abagail. tease you that ‘abby is just so much easier to scream’. but you were seeing something different in her eyes in this moment. out near the busy street, up against the wall. you try to move closer to her but she scoots away. “don’t.”
“what’s going on-“
“did you sleep with your ex? at any time during this? i mean, that’s so fucking low you don’t even understand-“
you’re so shocked that you can barely find the words to reply. “what? no. i wouldn’t do that to you abby. i wouldn’t do that to us.”
and you can see that she doesn’t want to say what she does next, but she feels like you’re lying. she’s blinded by rage. she feels embarrassed and stupid for ever falling for you, even if she knew deep down that that’s what she’d eventually end up doing. because, damn are you easy to fall in love with. she can’t even look at you.
“there is no us. helena wants me back, anyway. let’s just go our seperate ways. you can keep all the shit i got you, you desperately needed it because you are a fucking mess.”
and words burn. they sink under skin. they leave a mark, but this? this was a knife to the chest, twenty times in the same spot. this was enough to erase the budding love you’d grown for her. enough to make the memory of her lips on yours, skin on yours, agonizing. you felt like she’d just killed and buried you. all you can do is wrap your hand around the necklace, rip it off with all your might and cry.

There was commotion in King’s Landing. Chaos. Terror.
You were not within the safety of the Red Keep as you normally were, as you should be.
There was so much screaming you couldn’t think straight.
Alicent grabbed your hand, her other hand in Helena's and pulled you both forward.
The crowd pushed and heaved and you yelled as your hand slipped from your mother in law’s.
Pure terror shot down your spine as the push of the crowd led you away from them, away from your family by marriage, away from the King’s Guards, away from safety.
You were lost in a sea of limbs and panic, your screams completely unheard over the cacophony of scared sounds.
You couldn’t even determine the source of the commotion, you didn’t see it, only the after effect as you were now pushed down the streets of the city.
Water dripped down your cheeks, and when you looked up, the sky was clear. You continued to run with the crowd, in order to avoid being knocked over and trampled.
You lifted a hand to your face, and realized you were crying.
Another hand grabbed yours, and you gasped in relief, as you were harshly pulled to the side and into an alley.
Your gasping breaths slowed as the crowd no longer threatened to crush you.
You clenched your jaw and steeled your resolve as you realized the person who pulled you to safety was a stranger with a predatory gleam in his eyes.
You lifted your chin and yanked your hand out of his.
“Thank you for the assistance, kind sir, but I must get going. My family is expecting me,” you said firmly.
A hateful chuckle came from the darkness behind you.
You whirled around and saw two malicious looking men, behind them in the darkness there were two young women sitting on the ground with their hands and legs bound and gags in their mouths. There was fear unlike any you’d ever known in their eyes.
That same fear now dripped down your spine, but you couldn’t give into it, instead you steeled your spine.
“How much do you think we can get for this one?” The shorter man sneered.
You thought of how your husband spoke to his enemies and tried to emulate that same haughty tone as you looked down your nose at them.
“I am a Targaryen. Return-“
”But you don’t got silver hair,” one of the men blurted out.
You wrinkled your nose, ever the royal, and said, “I am the wife of Prince Aemond Targaryen. Return me to the Red Keep safely and I will make it certain you are rewarded for your goodwill.”
The men’s smiles grew greedy.
“Imagine how much we can get in ransom,” the one behind you muttered.
“That would be an incredibly stupid course of action. The Prince is a viciously protective man and would surely kill any who attempt to kidnap me. He once broke a man’s arm for grabbing me in the halls of the Red Keep. Another time he broke a man’s nose for looking at me too long. It is in your best interest to leave me be,” you said sternly.
The shorter one had the sense to look scared, but the bigger one, the scarier one, looked only overconfident.
“The One Eyed Prince is not in King’s Landing, is he? I hear he is far away tending to the ongoing war within his house,” he said as he narrowed his eyes at you.
You gulped.
“He rides the largest dragon in the world, it would be a quick thing for him to be here to incinerate you all,” you said, your confident tone wavering slightly.
“He’s not here now,” the one behind you said, and before you could look back at him there was pain as something hit you in the side of the head and the world turned black as you fell.
You were floating on a sea of fire, the motion of the waves of flame rocking you back and forth, the gentleness bringing you a sense of peace and reassurance you had not felt since your husband mounted his dragon and flew off to war.
The sky cracked open and rain poured as lightning flashed. But the flames you swam in remained strong, boosted you up, and as a bolt of lightning flashed towards you in slow motion, you held your hand up and the waves of fire surrounded you, protecting you from danger.
As you resurfaced you pointed your finger at the thundercloud and the fire shot like an arrow and decimated it.
Someone shook your shoulder and as you woke, your body still rocked back and forth with waves, only furthering your disorientation as you found yourself  somewhere completely foreign.
“Aemond?” You mumbled as nausea threatened to overcome you.
“Princess,” a female voice said and you cracked your eyes open to find yourself in a fully wooden room with two women. They both laid on the floor in the tiny room, same as you.
“Where am I?” You asked bewildered. Your head pounded and as you reached your hand and touched the side of it, you felt a tender bruise and hissed in pain.
“Princess, don’t you remember? We were captured,” the other woman said.
It all came rushing back to you and you pressed your lips together to avoid vomiting.
“Y-yes, where are we?”
“Somewhere in the middle of the sea,” the younger woman said quietly, her tone distraught.
You were on a ship, shoved in a small room, surely in the hull, that had been transformed into a temporary dungeon you discovered as you stood, losing your balance for a moment, and attempted to open the locked door.
“We already tried that,” the one with the dark hair said.
You sighed. “Of course you did.”
“How long have we been in here?” You asked, panic filling your chest.
“My guess is a day and a half,” the younger woman said.
You sank to your knees and allowed the tears to fill your eyes as the despair hit.
You later learned that the names of the women you were trapped with were Marrion and Eliza. They were both as terrified as you, but managed to learn as much as they could about the men who held you, which they relayed to you in hushed tones for fear of the guard outside the door overhearing.
“Is it true that your husband will come to rescue you?” Eliza asked hopefully.
You pressed your lips together. “Yes, but who knows how long it will take him to learn of my capture, to find me?”
Both the women looked down in dismay.
You knew that Aemond would abandon his war, his family, his life for you. You knew he would fight, would bleed, would die for you. Such was his love and devotion to his wife, but his family knew that as well, and a small voice in the back of your head worried and warned you that perhaps his scheming grandsire would prevent word of your predicament to be sent to your husband.
You wondered if you prayed to Vhagar if she would hear it and lead your husband to you, she was practically a goddess of war in her own right. You didn’t believe in any of the other gods your husband and his family worshiped.
“We need to make our own plan in the meantime,” you said firmly and they nodded.
You lifted your skirt and pulled out the sapphire embedded dagger strapped to your thigh that your husband gifted you on your name day.
Your companions had watched the men’s patterns before you awoke, and you based your plan off that. Listening to your husband and offering him support taught you a decent amount about strategy, and hours of training with him had taught you self defense skills as well, and it was time to put both to use, this time with you having the element of surprise, not the horrible men who stole you.
The next day, when the guard unlocked and opened the door that kept your prisoner, you were prepared to charm and simper, but the man smiled at you in a way that made your stomach sink, and threw a dress at you.
“The captain demands your presence, you have ten minutes to ready yourself,” he said with another lingering look before turning and slamming the door shut again. The lock was loud as it was clicked back into place.
“Well that makes things a bit easier,” you said and both women laughed in shock with you before they helped you make yourself look more presentable.
As you made your way towards the captain’s office, the pirates aboard the ship stared and sneered. You blinked against the brightness of the sun as it glittered over the blue sea. There was no sight of land that you could see, nothing but depthless ocean, no option for escape but a watery grave.
Your hopes of an easy getaway were dashed, you had no idea how long you would be forced to remain on this ship until it reached land and you could enact your strategy for release.
There was also no sight of Vhagar, no dragon roar in the winds, no dashing husband with a sword in hand, no one to save you.
Your heart sunk to your stomach.
The captain grinned at you, and you held in your grimace as you followed him into the room he led you to.
There was a table in the center of the room, food laden upon it, and your stomach growled in protest.
He chuckled at the sound, “Please, eat as much as you desire.”
He sat across the table from you and you waited until he filled his plate and took a few bites, before you tore into the food before you, uncaring of being ladylike due to the feeling of starvation.
“I hear you are a princess,” the man said and you looked up at him as you used your napkin to wipe your mouth.
“Your men stole me from my wedded family,” you said.
“The Targaryens,” he said.
You nodded, unable to withhold your glare.
“They’re not my men, in case you are interested, just men who sell me goods that make me gold,” he drawled and you resisted the urge to slap him.
“I am not an item to be bartered and sold, I am the wife of Aemond Targaryen and you will release me safely or my dragon will burn you and your entire operation to the ground,” you said, softly but with passion.
He had the gall to laugh at you.
You gritted your teeth and attempted to quell your temper, but your fiery temperament was difficult to leash, it was what attracted your husband to you in the first place.
“You’re a hateful bastard,” you spat.
He laughed again, “Guilty as charged. Princess, when we reach our destination across the sea, your husband’s family will be contacted and ransom will be posted. My crew and I will get our money and you will be returned home.”
You glared, wishing your look could kill. Your hand inched up your leg, grazing the sheathed dagger hidden under your skirts that hadn’t been found and confiscated during your capture.
Pirates began screaming and then there was an earth shattering roar.
You smirked.
He pulled out his sword and pointed it at you and rested the tip against your throat.
“You will die for this,” you purred.
“Stay put,” he said as he then stood and walked past you to the door.
As he opened the door, there was the most glorious sight to behold. Vaghar cast a shadow over the ship large enough it was nearly dark as night. Aemond’s silver hair shined as he climbed down a rope from her saddle and landed on the ship, his sword out and began slaughtering.
“Targaryen,” the captain yelled as he stepped out and stood on the bannister, looking down as your husband cut down his men.
You stood and quietly slipped your dagger from its sheath as you crept behind the captain.
“Where is my wife?” Aemond bellowed.
Heat filled you in response to his presence, his rage.
The captain opened his mouth to respond when a blade pierced the back of his neck, pushed through, and broke through on the other side of his throat, before the dagger was withdrawn. Red splattered as he choked on his own blood, the only sounds of his surprise.
He turned around to look at his attacker and you gave him a feral grin.
“I told you that you and your entire ship would burn,” you said sweetly before you pushed him over the railing, ignoring the sound and sight of his crippled body on the wood as you looked up at your Aemond.
The fighting had indeed paused as all were shocked by the death of the captain.
“I am here,” you said, blood spattered and filled with relief.
Aemond released a sigh of relief and gave you a feral grin.
“Come to me,” he said as his sword clashed with another, the men regaining their wits and attempting to kill him once more.
Everything in you wanted to yield to his command, to run to him, to be in his arms, but you had one more task to complete.
“In a minute,” you called out as you took off running back towards the cell you were kept in. As you looked back, you saw the confused quizzical look he threw at you as he continued to stab and end the lives of the men who stole you from him.
You raced down the hallway, having memorized the way, and saw the guard as he unlocked and opened the door where your companions were kept.
You stabbed him in the back, and ripped your dagger out, so when he turned around in surprise, you stabbed him again in the heart.
You yanked your dagger from him as you looked at the women, and yelled, “Follow me!”
You ran back from the belly of the ship to the safety of your dragon. But as soon as you were out in the open and saw him again, you realized he was in trouble.
He was the most skilled fighter, but he was overwhelmed by numbers. You threw your dagger at a man about to stab him in the back, and it found its home in the enemy's forehead.
You then picked up a sword off a deceased body and attempted to fight, but the sword was quickly knocked from your hands.
Your foe held his sword to your throat and you huffed in frustration.
Marrion and Eliza hid behind you, and at least eight men stood between you and Aemond.
“Enough,” the man who held your life in his hands yelled.
The fighting stopped and Aemond’s gaze met yours across the ship. Fire gleamed in his eye, blood coated his hands, splattered across his clothing, his handsome face, his silver hair. He was a god of vengeance, your protector, the bearer of your heart and soul.
“Return my wife to me,” he snarled.
“We outnumber you, yield,” the man closest to him said through gritted teeth.
“I do believe you are forgetting something,” Aemond said with a smirk and Vhagar roared loud enough to rock the boat.
You huffed a laugh.
The men took a step back from your husband, shaking in their boots.
Aemond held his hand out to you, you looked back to the man who threatened you, and with a sigh he lowered his sword from your throat. You ran into Aemond’s embrace, he pulled you close with one arm even as he continued to hold his sword up against the men.
The other two women followed you, and hid behind the two of you.
“My love,” he murmured, “Climb aboard Vhagar and lead your companions to do the same. I will be there momentarily.”
You pressed a kiss to his blood smattered cheek and did as he ordered. You climbed the rope that led you to Vhagar’s saddle, and as you got settled, you assisted the others in doing the same.
Aemond continued his stand off with the men who remained. When one jumped forward, attempting to attack, he unleashed himself.
The opponents were no match for your dragon, despite their numbers, and Aemond slayed as many as he could, before grabbing onto the rope.
With words in High Valyrian dripping from his tongue, he ordered his dragon to fly, taking him higher and away from the men who attempted to take you from him.
Only moments passed, and then he yelled, “Dracarys.”
Liquid fire encompassed the pirate ship and it burned just as you predicted it would.
You watched the ship, the men on it, burn to ashes before sinking into the ocean as Aemond climbed atop Vhagar’s saddle and situated himself behind you, wrapping his arms around you, the other two women behind him.
“Let’s go home, my love,” he said in your ear, gently and reassuring.
You nodded, sinking into his embrace, and only tearing your eyes from the wreckage when it sunk beneath the watery depths.
The return to King’s Landing was quick, and trusted guards returned the women with you safely to their homes, but not before you offered them jobs in the Red Keep, which they tearfully accepted. Descriptions were given of the men that sold you to the pirates, and you knew they would be dead by nightfall. f
Then, your husband led you to the small council chambers, you walked in feeling bashful, but he strutted in, led you to sit as he stood behind you, one hand on the back of your chair the other on your shoulder.
“Aemond!” His mother exclaimed.
He ignored her and instead glared at his grandsire.
“Why was I not properly informed that my wife had been stolen,” he growled.
“You left your post,” Otto replied.
“I don’t give a shit about my post. My wife was in danger. Days went by, days that she was no longer in your protection as you had promised,” he said, his voice raised.
“Aemond, we were doing everything we could to get her back,” Alicent attempted to soothe.
“Not enough,” Aemond said through gritted teeth.
“It was a calculated decision to not inform you, the hope was that we would have her back safety before you discovered that she was ever gone-“
”You calculated wrong.” Aemond said, his voice low and dark, the promise of violence so strong that you looked back at him and placed your hand atop his own.
“Aemond, I am fine, I am safe,” you reassured.
He glanced down at you, the words seeming to smooth some of the jagged panic inside him.
“And we are so grateful that you are,” Alicent replied.
Aemond looked back up.
“We need you to return, you and Vhagar are essential-“
“Fuck that,” Aemond said as he tugged on your hand, pulling you up out of your chair and by his side as he turned to leave.
“Aemond!” Alicent protested.
“My wife will stay by my side,” Aemond announced as you both exited the room.
”My love?” You asked, breathless as he walked swiftly through the halls of the Red Keep, keeping you with him.
“I will return to the war efforts on the morrow and you will come with me, do you understand? I cannot breathe when you are not near me. I cannot breathe when you are not safely in my arms. I cannot- “
“Aemond, look at me,” you said gently as you placed your hand on the side of his face.
You had pulled him to a stop right in front of your chambers, they had gone unused since you wed him as he had immediately moved you into his own.
His breathing was ragged, panic still threatening to pull him under.
“You saved me. I am here. And I will stay by your side always, if that is what you desire,” you said softly but passionately.
His lips crashed into yours.
His grip was tight as he pulled you against the hard planes of his body.
Your heart soared as his passion threatened to consume you. The waves of his fiery passion threatened to pull you under as his tongue tangled with yours and he moved, leading you to step back until your back hit the door and he pressed you against it. His hands roved from gripping your hips, one grazing the underside of your breast, the other caressing the side of your throat.
He pulled his lips from yours long enough to rest his forehead against yours and breathe out, “Always?”
“Always,” you promised as you pulled his lips back to yours.
His hand reached the handle of the door behind you, and he guided you into the room. He spent the night proving his devotion to you, imprinting himself on and inside your body, giving you pleasure of unparalleled heights.
And the next morning, your dragon kept his promise of always, and brought you with him, holding you tight and close on Vhagar’s back as he returned to wage war against his foes.

Been thinking about it a lot and there really is something to be said about this whole concept of loving oneself and being at odds with oneself and how it affects the innies and their decisions in the end. Helly and Helena always seem the most distinct, and people have spoken about how the Irvings are so in sync that there’s a strong case for reintegration for them, but it’s present in how Dylan and Mark act in this episode too.
Mark is on the path to reintegration. He should be set, he gets the chance to talk to himself, and there’s a part of him that loves himself. When iMark sees oMark on camera he smiles, a genuine smile, and it starts out so good except Mark has so much guilt and self-hate that it seeps through. He doesn’t care about himself, only Gemma, and so iMark saves her but looks back and goes, fuck oMark, because he doesn’t care about me or what I want.
Dylan is at clear odds with himself, with how he is inside versus out, and we SEE how quickly he goes from “how was the meeting with me” to “you cheated on me with my innie”. And it would be so, SO easy to continue that. But god. oDylan writes that message. He says he gets it. He says he CAN quit, if he wants. He acknowledges what makes iDylan his own person and tries to have him forge a path and so Dylan STAYS. He stays and becomes a badass for just a little bit longer.
It’s just….this concept of self love versus self hatred, it’s so prevalent and seeps through all the way into how these characters talk with THEMSELVES and it’s so fascinating

Plot points I hope to see in season 8b/9
(this is long because the writers have a lot to make up for)
• Airport scene
• Eddie gives Buck his St. Christopher necklace
• Buck's coping mechanism of briefly turning into slutty Buck 1.0 after Eddie leaves. Only this time it's with guys that resemble Eddie but he doesn't notice. Maddie does. And she wishes desperately that she wasn't pregnant so she could drink
• Buck actually uses the word bisexual or bi to describe himself
• Finally getting to see Eddie's sisters. And maybe while he's in Texas he facetimes Buck and they come into frame. And in true little sister fashion, they embarrass him: "Oh, Edmundo! Is this the Buck we keep hearing about? He IS cute!"
"I never said that!"
Buck: "...you don't think I'm cute? 🥺"
• Maddie, Sofia, and Adrianna meeting and bonding over their dumbass brothers
• Everyone else finds out that Buck is in Eddie's will and they all just stand there, mouths agape cuz how THE FUCK do they not know they're in love?? Everyone else can see it!
• Buck tells literally everyone at the 118 about his feelings for Eddie because he needs advice. And Chim makes a joke like,
"He already has everyone crushing on him! Why can't someone have a crush on me for once??"
"...dude, you're my brother-in-law."
"So?? We don't have to tell Maddie!"
• Buck admits his feelings but Eddie ends up not leaving so Buck avoids him out of embarrassment like jk pranked ya!
• Buck NDE because I NEED to see Eddie lose his shit
• Or they both have a close call and later have a serious 'spousal' discussion about what would happen to Chris if they both died. And then they share a moment of comradery, trash talking Helena & Ramon and hoping they never get custody again
• Speaking of Shitty Parents 2.0 (Shitty Parents 1.0 being the Buckley's) we need more screen time hating on Helena. Ramon got multiple scenes showing how awful he is and Eddie calling him out on it. But Helena is a selfish woman that keeps trying to manipulate Eddie into giving her Chris. And even when Eddie tries to keep in contact with his son while he's in Texas she just brushes him off and doesn't try to get Chris to talk to him. All because she got her way so she doesn't care, pushing Eddie further into his pit of self-hatred. And for that she must be punished
• Eddie talking to Bobby about his Catholic guilt in relation to his sexuality. And then going to Michael for advice about the transition of believing he's straight and having a heterosexual marriage and family to where he is now. The 3 of them need to go on a fishing trip or something. They'd have it all sorted out within the weekend
• Eddie and Maddie having ANY kind of interaction on screen. The writers know that if they teamed up they'd be besties instantly and they're keeping that from us!
• Chris needing dating advice but as soon as his dad tries to help he cuts him off like: "Not from you, you're obviously gay and all of your straight relationships sunk like the Titanic. But thanks anyway. Hey Buck!"
"Wtf? His relationships weren't great either!"
• Eddie having more discussions with Hot Priest™️ about his guilt and he just smiles fondly at Eddie, "I don't know about you, but my god doesn't judge. Not when someone lives their truth. I think you're more afraid of your family's judgement. If I were you, I'd go back and think of every time I thought God was judging me and consider the possibility that I was putting Him in place of my parental figures." and Eddie just blue screens for many minutes as Hot Priest™️ patiently waits for him to catch up as if he hadn't just changed his entire fucking life
• A scene where either Hot Priest™️ or Bobby or Buck asks him: "Would you judge Christopher if he questioned his sexuality?" "What? No." "Would you tell him to go to confessional or try to pray it away?" "Of course not!" "Would you ever discourage him to be anything less than who he truly is? Or stop him from doing something that makes him happy?" "No!" "Then why do it to yourself? Why set that example? Even if it turns out your parents or Abuela aren't comfortable with you exploring your sexuality, you can always do better than them. Break the cycle for the one person who matters most to you. Be happy, be yourself, be what you want to be, not what others expect from you. And I know you, you won't do it for you. So do it for Christopher. Show him that it's okay, great even, to be you."
• Josh getting all giddy while talking to Eddie like he did when Buck asked for gay dating advice
• Eddie talking to Hen and Karen about how they coped with their foster kids leaving. Like, how do wake up every morning to a quieter house and empty bedrooms, knowing the breakfast table is going to be lonely? They exchange bittersweet looks and hug him
I will accept no less than 80% of this becoming canon. Thank you and good night.
