i’m not trying to be judgemental here but how can red robin 2009 be considered ‘only valuable thing post-reboots’ and the rest of the stuff before it ‘basically useless cause the universe got rebooted blah blah’ if red robin is based on those previous comics? like red robin relies HEAVILY on the lore from robin ‘93 and what led to red robin ‘09 started there, the run itself is a ‘sequel’ of OYL.

i don’t disagree with the age up argument, it’s one i’ve been carrying along myself but it kinda feels pointless to point out in a conversation that is about tim’s entire character, which relies also on more than two decades from 1989 until 2011. zdarsky’s batman run references moments from robin ‘93/crossovers with robin ‘93 during bat-events, they brought back ariana recently. rebirth, a huge influence on tim’s current writing, also takes from robin ‘93. to act like what came before red robin ‘09 is forgotten history i’d argue is not just kinda stupid, but just flat out wrong

he has an almost 200 issues long solo, a team book of 50+ issues, he was a huge part of batman and detective comics for all the 90s up until the late 2000s and all the gotham gang stuff. he is like historically THE robin that got a solo run.

the book you refer to is ‘tim drake: robin’, from 2023. he has a 35 years long history, i’m pretty sure that a story from 2009 is not all he has

in a time of rising homophobia (again) i will always appreciate something like pride specials. genuinely. however, what irks me about a lot of the ‘newly queer’ writing of pre-established characters is the choice of safe, tested characters templates for their coming out story rather than actually adapting their stories for a satisfying coming out story. every skinny queer white boy is some soft boy who blushes when he holds hands with his boyfriend and every lesbian character is a girlboss and every ‘elder queer’ (older than 30) is a wise, friendly expert of the community that is always friends with everyone and is chosen as introduction to queerness for the young gay fellow. ‘but what about my rep?’ you should see yourself represented IN THE CHARACTER which you can only do in a fully fleshed story and not a story about them ‘getting ready to slayyy at pride’

it drives me crazy that steph’s comfort meal is mashed potatoes and tim’s is shepherd’s pie. a meal made with mashed potatoes. shepherd’s pie needs mashed potatoes to be complete. mashed potatoes needs shepherd’s pie to feel appreciated as more than a simple dish.

ive started to see every alternative to 'tim drake's future' that arent him dropping vigilantism all together as a genuine pet peeve

tim going back to red robin is lazy. 'but at the end of the run-' that run ended more than 10 years ago, let it go. the way the dc universe is right now, a continuation of that arc would just turn out to be lazy, nostalgia-bait slop as proven by the fact that, every time tim is mentioned in modern comics as 'red robin', nothing of substance is done with that. the mantle that once had any sort of importance to his character is reduced to 'basically robin but not really!' and idk how that can be seen as 'character growth' from anyone who genuinely cares for his character. 70% of the people ive seen with that hc are damian fans that want tim out of the way (not that i dont understand the sentiment) and dont really care for his character outside of the fact that dc keeps him as another robin mantle bearer and some writers prefer him

getting tim out of gotham is completely out of character. the only time he left gotham were his worst times, he became robin for gotham's sake. its his city, his world. leaving for some 'bludhaven-esque' city would just end up being a carbon copy nightwing '96 story. hard no. surprisingly, i don’t mind marina, if it means some better writer breaks down all of fitzmartin’s slop and makes it genuinely good with an interesting supporting cast instead of the queer catalog from a 2020 instagram infographics it was in tim drake: robin

tim getting a new mantle is lazier and again 'just to get him out of the way', why would tim want to be a vigilante outside of robin? 'he cares for justice' sure, because of robin. he wouldnt have become a vigilante at all if it wasnt for robin and, even then, he wasnt willing to become a vigilante until he realized dick had moved on and chosen him as a worthy successor. tim didnt choose vigilantism, he chose robin, and no other mantle would ever bear that significance for him. this, again, is proven by how literally every 'new mantle for tim' means nothing. its either random bird names or that goddamn 'gray ghost' which... why would it make sense for tim? what part of tim's character at his core would demand for that mantle? there has never been one of these 'new mantles' that actually embraced any important trait for him, they are just names

tim dying is just bad, as any other character being killed off would be. its the sign of an untalented editorial team finding the easy way out and an unworthy sendoff 'for the batfam's sake' for a character that had quite literally been the reason the batfamily exists to this day.

i know that tim going ‘oh you like nirvana? name three songs’ is a popular hc but personally i believe he is actually a huge poser. saw a shirt at the store and thought it would help him fit in, he calls billie joe armstrong ‘the green day guy’ and only knows the popular songs. i think its mostly because he doesnt have that big of a connection with grunge or ‘modern music’ in general, he was a boarding school boy raised on operas. he probably listened to his parents’ music till he enrolled in high school and then started listening to his friends’ music to fit in

on an opposite side, i think steph would be the ‘name three songs’ girl. especially if we take in consideration the semi hc that she is a riot grrl and a metalhead, music as a political statement for rebellion would especially resonate to her and make her protective of the genre. she would sniff out posers and be the ‘oh i dont listen to backstreet boys, im not like the other girls’ kind of girl. i also think being a riot grrl would inspire her to create the spoiler mantle as a personification of a girl rebelling to patriarchy and abuse

it sucks to be a ‘jack drake dying’ hater because i want to live in a world where tim, dick and cass are canonically siblings but i also don’t want him to be a wayne cause i believe it ruined his character beyond repair. also theres also the agonizing reminder of how, before tim was adopted by bruce, dc shipped him with cass and i cannot bear that happening ever again.

its really funny when people act like tim centric fanon fics when tim acts like a crybaby that needs to be coddled are, in any way, beneficial to tim. he doesnt benefit from ‘mean dick grayson throwing him in arkham’, his entire character depends on his good relationship with dick grayson. his entire life changed because of that kid, in what way is ‘dick actually hates tim and want him to die’ is supposed to be about bettering tim at all?
