No matter how much Mark loves Helly, of course he wouldn't be able to distinguish her from Helena. He's never known Helena outside of her faking to be Helly.

This is why Harmony could instantly tell that Mark was his Innie: she knew both sides of him that was truly him. Not some version of him pretending to be someone else.

I mean, think about it in a romantic context. If you've ever had a crush before, or admired someone greatly, and wanted to get closer, you've probably altered some parts of yourself to appeal to them. And even when you're finally in the relationship, the early stages are still you and your partner trying to unwind every part of yourself you fabricated, even if it's small.

That's how Helena could have viewed faking Helly: like fabricating lies to appease her crush. And if we consider she may have never been in love before (or, at least, been allowed to), then it's even more sad. She wasn't just mocking the story at the campfire and crafting a seal for Irving because it's what she thought Helly would do, or purely to be cruel. For the first time in her life, she was living like how should would have as a child. Going on adventures, actually bonding with her father figure, and having her first ever crush.

And Mark saw through all of that because he saw her through rose tinted glasses: flawless, beautiful, and capable of doing no wrong. He loved her so much that he could not except she'd be a different person.
