helen "knew"/guessed that vox was frequently cheating on her, but she had no idea that he was attracted to men. if she'd ever found out, things would've gotten... ugly.
helen had really grown to hate her husband and her first instinct would be to out him without a second thought; it'd give her a reason to divorce him without any blame being placed on her, after all. however, if she threatened him with that (and had proof), vox would've fucking groveled, begging her not to tell anyone and offering her anything to keep it secret. helen's desire for revenge might waver, and she would agree not to tell anyone on the condition that they divorced asap and she was allowed to keep the house, the kids, and the money that she had brought into the marriage. it'd be a bitter pill for vox to swallow, but he'd feel like he had no choice. his reputation was everything to him– he couldn't even begin to imagine what he'd do if he was outed and blacklisted from the industry.
#is it more in character for vox to just kill her or try to institutionalize her?#maybe#but one time i read a fic where in his human life#vox's wife found out he liked men and gave him an ultimatum to either be outed or go get 'help'#which ended in vox dying in a facility of a seizure due to an overuse of electroconvulsive therapy#and that concept stuck with me#redlady speaks#oc posting#cw homophobia#helen's an interesting case#she was a nice normal girl who slowly became more bitter and resentful the longer she was stuck with her narcissistic husband#her and vox were sort of on equal footing in terms of coldness by the end#but she still retained bits of the kinder person she used to be#they don't come out often but they're there#she wants vox to get what's coming to him but *completely* destroying him herself just feels... uncomfortable#really she just wants him out of her life

you can tell i'm too deep into shakespeare studies because i've started developing a mental list of plays that are not good, not bad, but interestingly bad maybe on purpose in a way that makes them somehow loop back around to being good
#the two main ones at the moment being#all's well that ends well#and henry iv part 2#listen all's well is bad at being a satisfying comedy but it's bad at that on PURPOSE. to me <3#it's a comedy directed by female desire rather than male desire and helen is fighting tooth and nail not to let the genre break#despite doing things in a very unorthodox way#and bertram is trying soooooo hard to escape the ending but he cannot <3#but does that make the ending happy? shakespeare voice idk man you decide#and 2h4 (to me) is like. here's how hollow the world is after hotspur died and took chivalry and honour with him#it's all just hollow carnivalesque parodies where there used to be heart#and in both of these cases i think that's really INTERESTING. even if the play isn't necessarily. good.#but i may just be too far into shakespeare loving territory where i'm like 'even the plays that are bad are good actually'#mine

It’s so interesting to me that the big, like, ~reveal~ of both Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall concern one of the main love interests already being - surprise! - married, but they are such VASTLY different circumstances with totally different connotations and consequences. Just Bronte girlie thoughts.
#and i don't think it boils down to the gender of the married party being different#because on the surface helen and rochester's initial story beats are actually fairly similar#they marry someone based on a lack of information and youthful idiocy then come to realize their mistake later on in the marriage#and like the ~issue~ resides in their partner. namely not being who they thought they were#now this is where it starts to diverge with questionable handling of mental health and an eye raising dash of racism in rochester's case#whereas helen's husband is just a moron#then she leaves whereas rochester just. locks his wife in the attic etc etc#and it's interesting because helen leaving mirrors jane's leaving rochester but for like the complete opposite reason#jane leaves rochester despite wanting to be with him because it's the ~christian~ thing to do#whereas helen leaves her husband despite her marriage vows to save her son from growing up to be an asshole like his father#all this to say perhaps the bronte sisters laid out the following suggestion:#in an unhappy marriage a woman can only run the fuck away whereas the man can lock his wife in the attic#gender imbalances smh#anyways#jane eyre#the tenant of wildfell hall#anne bronte#charlotte bronte#the brontes

there are some scenes in the light novel i really wished made it to the manhwa. of the ones i liked so far:
-Prince Tyrone trying to fight Lyla by throwing a snow storm at her and Paris stepping in to stop it sheerly because he felt like it. Which then proceeds to him learning Lyla's name and following her, freaking her the hell out as she tries to navigate not gaining his interest, and which then leads him to connecting the dots and sending her to Fian
-Paris apparently fighting off other people from approaching Fian and even going to his father and telling him not to put Fian in with the Kylon Imperial Knights bc he didn't want Fian to be swarmed by humans
-Helene telling Odelia and Tyrone to shut up when they insulted Lyla. I'm so upset these scenes aren't canon (tho obviously it's understandable why they aren't) and i hope Helene in the manhwa gets to protect Lyla like this sometime in the future
-Fian takes Lyla out for a ride during the festival in his dragon form. which was adorably cute
-Helene approaching Lyla and asking her if she was sad about her mother's passing, patting Lyla affectionately and telling her "it's okay to be sad" only to end up crying when she leaves, much to Lyla's shock
-Helene telling Paris that she wants Lyla dead because she doesn't want to look at the girl and remember things she wants to forget but can't erase herself bc apparently memory erasure isn't a thing. This is not a spoiler because it's an AU as fuck thing from the manhwa im 100% sure. but yeah Helene's fucked up as a character and she might not be telling the truth here bc so far the LN is making her feel like she could be a liar but i honestly can't get a read on her in the LN aside from the fact she's probably messed up af
-on that note, Paris kneeling to Helene and pledging loyalty to her was really neat. The actions he took before it though...well let's just say i like the manhwa's take on their talk about Daniel more :>
-Helene being unhinged. God do i enjoy her being unhinged. If you think manhwa her is at all unhinged, oh you don't know the half of it
-also Paris bickering with Helene at the hunting festival banquet by saying "at least i don't try and kill my siblings" after she snarked about how close he was to his cousin was such good use of tension. Im really enjoying that they both feel like they're on their toes around each other in the light novel and that Paris both is fascinated with Helene like in the manhwa but also he tries his best to "nope" out of helping her and her demands
-Helene watched Lyla still the Dragon's Heart Fragment from the Imperial Vault and knew she took the fake. It's all but implied she was the one watching Lyla steal it (tho not much has really come of that funnily enough)
#TME LN#The Mighty Extra#im 45 chapters in (up to the talk Paris has with Helene about Daniel awakening as a dragon) and i have some thoughts LMAO#im ngl i think i prefer the manhwa more because everything feels more cleverly written there than it does in the LN#bc the light novel feels more#disjointed?#disconnected?#something like that#i have a harder time connecting to the characters (and rely heavily on my attachment to the manhwa versions of them to carry me lol)#but i like getting more information about this world and how it operates and more about stuff the manhwa skimps on#such as OG!Helene's relationship with Paris and Fian#or how the Dragon's Heart Fragment and it's association to Helene shouldn't be overlooked whatsoever#i will say that i prefer the manhwa for its plot and character cast/development#but i think i like the light novel more in terms of world-building and how more realistic Lyla feels as a character#like no joke one of my favorite lines of hers is “while Helene and Odelia were arguing about politics i was thinking of dinner”#like damn Lyla stop being relatable as fuck#tho i wish the story would revolve a little less around her like it does in the manhwa#Paris being more interested in Lyla than Helene for example makes me D:#bc part of what makes Paris so appealing is in the manhwa is that he's the only dragon who doesn't really care about Lyla#which shows that she's not the center of the universe whereas in here that's less the case :/#also btw did you know there's like 180 chapters and each chapter correlates to roughly the same number in the manhwa#so hypothetically by the time the manhwa ends it should have about 180 episodes total#and currently it's only at 82?#wild~

okay hear me out. what if 'trevor herbert' is jonah magnus. what then.
all the tmagp-versions of tma characters we've seen can honestly, in my opinion, be feasible variations of their tma selves. yes, even gerry. he seems very different, but iirc in a qna it was stated that gerry's the sort of person who genuinely does believe in goodness and the like, it just got stamped out of him by growing up with mary and the fears. so in a universe where that wasn't the case, I can totally see him being cheerful and friendly.
trevor, on the other hand, feels fundamentally wrong. especially given his profession. all the tmagp-tma crossover characters (that we've met! I'm not counting the maybe-jon and maybe-martin because we don't even know if they're the same people!) have jobs that align with their tma selves. basira goes from being a cop to being a school administrator- both positions of authority/control. helen is still a swanky tory real estate agent. gerry is an artist, and it's mentioned he painted in tma as well. georgie does a podcast. gertrude has a mysterious past, and it's implied she was connected to the institute at some point.
but trevor goes from being a homeless monster hunter to.... a member of parliment who drives a bentley? there's no connection there. and he doesn't act like tma trevor in any way either! there's no dedication to hunting about him, even in the metaphorical sense. if anything, he "prefers a hands-off approach" as of episode 30. trevor herbert in tma was the polar opposite of that, one of the most 'hands on' characters in the series. but who else has a penchant for watching without interfering until something actually threatens his vision?
would it be too much of a stretch to posit that jonah, weakened from his institute's destruction, ends up posessing the first body he can get his hands on, steering this new alter ego towards a government position of authority, then to monitoring the OIAR, so similar yet so different from the institute he failed to preserve? what if, when he says gwendolyn bouchard has "quality", he's not just talking about her heritage? what if he's starting to look for his next mark?
anyways, I found an interesting little detail while rereading some transcripts. in the magnus protocol, the first mention of both (presumably) jonah magnus and trevor herbert, MP is in episode 27: driven. before that, they were not named, and trevor was referred to just as "the minister".
now that's a fun little coincidence as it is, but if we return to tma, we notice that trevor's first statement is in episode 10: vampire killer. and elias/jonah's first actual appearance (outside of jon referencing that he's his boss) is in episode 17: the boneturner's tale. 10 + 17 = 27.
WHICH COULD MEAN NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi! Can you elaborate on "Fuck GRRM's committment to 'historical realism' without knowing anything about medieval social history"? I would love to know about what GRRM gets wrong about medieval gender roles, specifically.
So Cersei learns at an early age that she has no agency, her only value is producing heirs and is barred from traditional routes of power so she has to use underhanded methods such as influencing men with sex or using underhanded magical means. I would love an explanation on why this doesn't reflect medieval queen consorts and noble women irl.
Sure! The basic summary is: GRRM "knows" the things that everyone "knows" about the middle ages, which are broad stereotypes often reflective of a) primary sources that deserve a critical reading rather than being taken at face value and b) the judgements of later periods making themselves look better at the medieval period's expense.
As Shiloh Carroll argues, building on the work of Helen Young, “readers are caught in a ‘feedback loop’ in which Martin’s work helps to create a neomedieval idea of the Middle Ages, which then becomes their idea of what the Middle Ages ‘really’ looked like, which is then used to defend Martin’s work as ‘realistic’ because it matches their idea of the real Middle Ages.”
Since you're mainly interested in Cersei here, I'd strongly recommend a book: Queenship and the Women of Westeros: Female Agency and Advice in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, edited by Zita Eva Rohr and Lisa Benz. It's an excellent read and speaks to exactly what you're asking about. The tone of the book is very positive and non-judgemental when it comes to GRRM and his depictions of women on the whole, but I think some of this is rhetorical positioning to not seem like "mean angry academics jumping on fiction for not being accurate," as the actual content turns the reader to thinking about how much agency and power medieval queens had in different European societies and how little of that worked its way into GRRM's worldbuilding.
It's true that women typically didn't inherit titles and thrones in their own right, and that they were usually given in marriage for political/dynastic reasons. However, they weren't seen as brood mares whose only duty was to pop out sons: both queens and noblewomen had roles to play as household managers, counselors, and lieutenants, actively participating in the ruling of their domains and in local and international diplomacy (women in political alliances were not just pawns sent to a powerful man's bed, but were to act as ambassadors for their families and to pass information back and forth), and they had to be raised with an understanding of this so that they could learn to do it. Motherhood was very important, don't get me wrong, but it's a mistake to assume as pop culture does that a wife's foremost duty being to provide heirs for her family meant that she was ONLY seen as a mother/potential mother.
Catelyn is a great example of what was expected of women in these positions. But in the books, Catelyn is basically the only woman who inhabits this role, and the impression given is that she's exceptional, that she's just in charge of the household because she's so great at it that Ned allows her to be his partner, and that he listens to her advice because she happens to be a wise person in his orbit - and also that Ned is exceptional for giving so much power to a woman, because in the world of ASOIAF, it takes an especially good man to do this. In GRRM's view of the medieval world, realpolitik and the accumulation of power are the most important things, so men in Westeros are extremely unlikely to give up any authority to their wives, even though this is historically inaccurate.
Cersei, on the other hand, is supposed to be a more realistic depiction of what would happen to an ambitious medieval woman. There's a chapter titled "Queen of Sad Mischance: Medievalism, “Realism,” and the Case of Cersei Lannister" in the book I've rec'd, and it deals with why this is problematic extremely well. (This is the source of the quote at the top of this post.) In it, Kavita Mudan Finn argues that Cersei embodies pretty much every medieval trope for the illegitimate wielding of power by a woman. She underhandedly gets people killed for opposing her, she seduces men into doing her bidding, she advances her family's interests and her own at the expense of the realm. She's made sympathetic through fannish interpretation and Lena Headey's performance, but in the text she's an evil woman doing evil things. Even when she gets to be regent for her son - a completely legitimate historical position that allowed women to handle the levers of power almost exactly like a king - she continues to do shitty things and not be taken seriously because she's just not good at ruling.
But even before then, from a medieval perspective she had access to completely legitimate power that she didn't use: she'd have had estates giving her a large personal income, religious establishments to patronize (giving her a good reputation as a pious woman and people she'd put in high positions being personally loyal to her), artists and writers to patronize as well, power over her household, men around her listening to her counsel. That she doesn't have that is a reflection of GRRM either deciding these things don't really exist in Westeros in order to make it a worse world than medieval Europe and justify Cersei feeling she had to use underhanded means of power, or not knowing that they were ordinary and unexceptional because he has a good working knowledge of the politics of the Wars of the Roses but little to no knowledge of social history beyond pop culture osmosis, and, imo, little to no interest in actual power dynamics.
There are a lot of books I'd recommend on this subject. There's a series from Palgrave Macmillan called "Queenship and Power" and nearly all the books in it are THE BEST. Theresa Earenfight's Queenship in Medieval Europe is a very readable introduction to the situations of queens in European societies across the continent. She also has a book, Women and Wealth in Late Medieval Europe, that also addresses non-royal women's power. I'm also a huge fan of English Aristocratic Women, 1450-1550: Marriage and Family, Property and Careers, by Barbara Harris, which really emphasizes the "career" aspect of women's lives as administrators and diplomats.

One of my favorite and most interesting thing about Jon is that he sorts peoples actions into Human and Monster
To him, the actions of monsters cannot be forgiven, as seen with Daisy, Helen and Jared
But along with that, the actions of humans always have an excuse, like Basira and his grandmother
The most prime example of this is with Jurgen where, prior to his meeting with him, he wrote Jurgen off as evil and when he did meet with him he dubbed Jurgen as just a spoiled confused child
And what makes this more interesting is how he perceives himself as a monster. He sees himself as unforgivable and monstrous, even when hes just doing what he needs to survive
He forgives people who hurt him, like his grandmother who neglected and obviously resented him and Basira, who threatened to kill him if he so much as stepped out of line, because they are human. They are people against a monster
The only time he doesnt blame himself for something is when he can blame another monster, like in mag 146, Threshold, where he blames the Web, another, different monster
And what makes his mentality so much more devastating is that many avatars, the monsters in his mind, are shown to not often be in complete control, whereas humans do have entire control
Avatars have to spread fear and hurt or they themself will die. In more explicit cases of lack of control Jon himself has stated he often doesnt realize what hes done until after its happened and Daisy becomes completely mindless by the end of the series to the point of only recognizing two things, a hunt and Basira (daisy also sorts people into monster and human, but thats because of hunt reasons)
Humans dont have these restrictions, humans are entirely free to do what they please, with the only con being they are significantly weaker than avatars
When Basira threatens him, she is doing it entirely through her own choice, whereas when Jon hunts statement givers he is doing it partly because hes forced into that position. But he will still forgive and rationalize Basiras actions while condemning and scrutinize his own, because she is the human and he is the monster
Anyways I like Jon he needs therapy
#im filling my 'go feral about jon' quota#i didnt draw him obsessively today so im just. yea#i love this guy hes so fucking interesting#i have no clue if anyone else has made this connection yet#but I HAVE so all of you get to hear about it#i like basira btw shes also interesting and she sorts people by determining whos the biggest threat and ally to her#tma#the magnus archives#jon sims#jonathan sims#jon tma#the magnus archives fanart#jarchivist#garlic breath#daisy tonner#basira hussain#the web#jurgen leitner

BEN Drowned
When he first agrees to go for a snack run at the old abandoned gas station, he doesn’t expect it to be eventful
Despite being abandoned, the place is semi-regularly stocked by the proxies to use as a last-resort shelter and supply hoard in case anyone needs it
So it’s not like the building is used to seeing a lot of traffic, much less any kind of excitement
Which is why he never, ever in his undead life would have expected to walk in on what he does
Just barely half-concealed near the back of the store, BEN does a full-on double-take as he sees the newest member of the mansion naked, his legs spread and his cock hard and twitching as he pumps a gun in and out of his ass
It completely stuns BEN in place
He can't tear his eyes away from the shiny barrel rhythmically pounding in and out of the new guy's slick hole
With a low, whiny moan, he screws his eyes shut and throws his head back in sheer bliss, and it's like that's just enough to snap BEN out of it
He ducks behind a nearby shelf, the ghost of his heart pounding in his chest, and he prays he didn’t get noticed
When the faint moaning doesn’t subside, he realizes he’s probably in the clear
BEN counts down from ten to catch his breath, and then, with the adrenaline coursing through his system, he sneaks another peek
It’s filthy, perverted—a complete lack of respect and total breach of trust—but how could he not?
Acting on instinct, he whips out his phone, aims it at the pornographic scene unfolding just inches away from him, and hits record
Bloody Painter
It isn’t a particularly eventful night for Helen at first
Alone in the studio, inspiration just isn’t coming to him, and he finds himself zoning out in front of an empty canvas, hoping to get blessed with the miracle of motivation
When his phone buzzes, he initially doesn’t think much of it
It’s only when he opens it to a particularly interesting video that his lackluster night suddenly takes a turn
In a shoddy, poorly-lit building, the video cuts straight to the point with a guy squirming and whimpering, fully naked on the ground
He's fisting at his dick, whining under his breath, and at the same time, he's bouncing his ass against something dark and metallic
Squinting, Helen zooms in to confirm his suspicion; he’s fucking himself on a gun
If he wasn't so entranced by the sight, Helen might’ve wondered why the fuck this was sent to him
But his mind is suddenly blank, and the one thought he has left is who the fuck is that guy?
He racks his brain trying to think of anyone who might fit the description
And, suddenly, he realizes—that’s the new guy
The faintest hints of a smile ghost over the artist’s lips
He finishes watching the video, picks up a paintbrush, and brings it to the canvas
He gets the feeling that his next piece is going to be very inspired~
CandyPop
Candy generally doesn’t get too involved in whatever happens at the mansion
He gets along decently with some creeps, but he either doesn’t care about the others, or he’s grown to fully hate them over the years
Despite that, however, he adores meddling in other people's business
So when word starts spreading that the newest creep got caught and filmed jerking off with a gun, Candy just knows things are about to get exciting~
He asks around for a copy of the video, and right from the first watch, he's fascinated by the newest member
He can’t help but think what a good pet this creep would be to have around
Like, he seems kind of masochistic, a possible exhibitionist, and he likes receiving?
Sounds like way too much fun~
He watches the video an unhealthy amount of times, and although he isn’t welcomed at the mansion, he makes it a point to somehow meet this guy
The video gives Candy way too many ideas—which, for a demonic clown, is most certainly not a good thing
Unknowingly, it seems like the new guy's sexual habits are already garnering attention from some pretty dangerous entities
Whoopsies!
Clockwork
Clockwork regularly goes to that gas station
She likes the quiet solitude it offers, not to mention the weirdly cozy vibes and decent array of snack foods
So, naturally, when Toby suggests the snack run, Nat is one of the first to agree to join
She beelines it to her favorite spot in the building, the employee break room near the back, and as she approaches, she actually hears the new guy before seeing him
Is that… moaning?
Curiosity getting the better of her, she follows the sound
And right as she's about to stumble in on the big reveal, she's grabbed and yanked behind one of the nearby shelves
Instincts kicking in, she nearly punches BEN right in the face, but something stops her before she does
That look on his face
She pauses, notices the phone in his hand, and, combined with the sounds she's hearing, everything makes sense
Her face immediately flushes
Before she can stop herself, her eyes shift to the spot at the back corner, and, surely enough, she sees what’s happening
The new guy throws his head back, his body convulsing as he shudders and his cock twitches and throbs
He pumps the gun in and out faster, harder, like he’s approaching his climax
Before she can see anything more, before she violates his privacy any further, Nat spins on her heels and gets the hell out of there, too flustered to say or even do anything else
Dark Link
Like Candy, Dark doesn’t typically keep up with whatever the hell kind of nonsense happens at the mansion
So he only discovers the video when he's snooping through BEN’s files in an attempt to get the upper hand in their rivalry
As soon as he sees that video file, he knows he's in for a treat~
The guy, who he assumes must be a new member, isn’t too bad on the eyes to begin with
And when the video pans down to get a better view of just what he's using to jerk himself off, Dark needs to know more about him
He rummages through a few more files to find out more information on him, just for the fun of it
He honestly doesn't expect to do anything with the intel, but the deeper he looks into it, the more he wants to meet him
The more he wants to torment him
Technically, however, being on neutral terms with Slender means that he isn't allowed to do such things to members of the safehouse
So Dark realizes that he, unfortunately, will just have to wait for him to step out of the mansion's boundaries before trying anything a bit more... risky
If they do end up meeting, he plans on using the... intimate knowledge he has of him to embarrass him
And if they don’t meet anytime soon, he’ll simply have to content himself with replaying that video over and over and over again~
Eyeless Jack
Being more of an introvert, Jack doesn’t join the outing at the abandoned station
But as soon as everyone comes back, he can tell something is a bit… off
After cautiously asking around to find out what happened, he finally gets BEN to show him the video
And, let’s just say, Jack’s never been happier to have a mask concealing his face
He only lasts a few seconds in before telling BEN to turn that thing off
From an outside perspective, it probably looks like he disapproves of the creeps violating the newest member’s privacy
Which, to be fair, he does
But, more than that, he’s just really flustered about the whole thing
He doesn’t know how he’ll manage to face the new guy again
The next time they meet, Jack tries to act cool and natural, but he completely fumbles the bag and gets visibly flustered
If anything might tip the new guy off that something funky's going on, it's probably the way Jack acts around him from that point on
Homicidal Liu
Since Liu rarely uses the shelter of the mansion, it also takes him a while to find out about the incident
By the time he discovers it, chances are, the new guy knows he got busted, so most creeps are already in on his dirty little secret
It’s therefore a huge relief when the new guy initially meets Liu, and Liu doesn't seem to know about it
Their first meeting goes well, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for Liu to find out about the video anyway
The difference between meeting the newbie normally and seeing how depraved he is when he's turned on is shocking
Next time he runs into him, it's almost hard not to gawk
Poor Liu gets too flustered trying to talk to him after seeing that side of him, so he inevitably ends up retreating into himself
Which gives just enough space for Sully to show face
And whew boy is Sully ever ruthless with the intel he has
They probably give the new guy whiplash if he wasn't previously warned about Liu's alter
As much as Liu was sweet and accommodating, Sully, on the other hand, takes pleasure in embarrassing the new guy until he’s squirming
He borderline starts degrading and dirty-mouthing him right then and there
And, unfortunately for the newbie, he very quickly becomes Sully’s new favorite plaything~
Hoodie
Also part of the gang going for the snack run, Hoodie has a sneaking suspicion it's going to be an eventful outing
Not necessarily because of anything, mind you—it's just a sort of premonition, if you will
And yet, even despite his intuition, it still catches him off guard when he hears that faint moaning coming from the back of the store
The sound leads him to BEN and Nat acting strange behind a shelf hidden off to the side
They don't notice him, so he stays just out of their line of sight as he peeks around the corner to the source of the quiet, shuddering breaths
And he absolutely can't contain that shit-eating grin on his face as he finds the newest member of the mansion unknowingly responsible for all of the agitation in the store
Fisting his cock, he quietly mewls and whimpers as he grinds his ass down against something long and hard that looks kind of familiar
Leaning in as much as he can without jeopardizing his hiding spot, Hoodie finally realizes what he's masturbating with
He’s about to pull out his phone, when Nat briskly turns and leaves
Right at the last second, he ducks out of sight, and when the coast is clear, he starts his own recording of the action
He doesn't know if he'll use it for blackmail, or just for his own... personal fun, but he figures it'll be useful to have, either way~
Jane the Killer
She originally hears the gossip about the new guy being an exhibitionist when she's out of town
When she returns to the mansion, Nat explains what happened, and Jane just doesn’t know how to react
He got caught doing what where??
She meets the newbie not too long after, and all she can think about while trying to make casual chit-chat is that she knows
She, for obvious reasons, doesn’t want to let on that she knows, and thankfully, her mask does a great job of concealing her expression
He doesn’t seem to notice what she’s thinking, and their interaction goes over pretty smoothly, all things considered
She gets the impression that he isn't a bad person, despite whatever kind of sexual habits he has, so she actually doesn't mind him
She's really not the type to kink shame, anyways
And so, after their meeting, Jane makes it a point to shut people down when they try to make rude or disrespectful comments about him
She hates bullying, and she's not afraid to stand up against assholes, even if she's alone in doing so, so she grows to become really protective of the newbie
She absolutely doesn’t let anyone tease him or make any kind of jokes at his expense
Whether he knows it or not, the new guy owes her big time for defending him so much
Jason the Toymaker
He’s one of the first “outsiders” to originally hear about it
He actually even gets his hands on a copy of the video
At first, he plans on using it for blackmail material as well
But as he watches through it, he can’t help but think how the new guy would make such a good addition to his collection of dolls
He could probably make him so nice and malleable, so deliciously obedient oh so easily~
And, really, he thinks, the mansion is already so full of creeps as is—would they really miss one measly little member?
Something about it—something about how pure and innocent, yet filthy and depraved the new guy looks as he fucks himself with a weapon in an abandoned gas station—it just kind of riles Jason up
And, being a very obsessive demon, it isn’t long before he realizes how badly he'd love to abduct the new guy and claim him
He thinks about all of the weapons he could use on him, all of the places he could test and push his limits to
It gives him way too many ideas
He makes it his goal to add him to his collection of dolls, and he’ll wait as long as it takes to get what he wants
Jeff the Killer
Jeff is minding his own business, for once, at the gas station during the snack run when he gets a text from BEN telling him to come to the back of the store
When he hears the faint moans and whimpers, he thinks BEN is playing some kind of prank
But boy is he ever wrong
He walks in on BEN sneakily filming the new guy, who’s bouncing up and down on a gun and panting like a depraved whore while he does so
Like most of the others, it takes him a second to process what he’s seeing
There’s no way he just walked in on that
He's too surprised to pull himself away at first, and when he snaps out of it, he realizes he's enjoying it too much to leave
He watches the whole show, even as the new guy starts moaning louder, even until his body starts shaking and his cock starts tensing and twitching as he approaches his peak
He can’t look away as the newbie throws his head back, plunges the gun as deep as it’ll go inside him, then cums all over himself in a sticky white mess
As he starts coming down from his high, both Jeff and BEN quickly sneak away to avoid being seen
And although Jeff doesn’t usually like newbies, he figures he might make an exception for this guy
Unfortunately for the new guy, however, Jeff's love language is bullying
And what he saw at that gas station is just perfect bullying material
And he doesn't plan on going easy on him just because he's new
Kate the Chaser
Since she’s antisocial, she’s hardly ever at the mansion, even despite being a proxy
She mostly just hangs around abandoned buildings, caves, half-decrepit huts in the woods—that kind of thing; and she feels very protective of those places
So when she senses a group of people wandering through what she’d consider her abandoned gas station, she makes sure to keep a close watch on everyone
She doesn’t actively see what happens with the new guy, but she definitely hears about it when everyone’s leaving the place
By overhearing bits of conversations, she's able to piece together what happened, and she develops a certain curiosity about the new guy
Kate teeters between states of consciousness, where, most of the time, she’s almost basically feral
But every now and then, remnants of her old humanity peek through
And hearing about this new guy somehow brings bits of her old self out, which piques her interest
It’s like a mix of curiosity and sexual fascination that has her sticking around to watch the new guy stumble his way back to the mansion
And even though she’d likely never confront him on her own, she secretly hopes that she’ll stumble in on him doing something like that again
Alas, until that day comes, maybe she’ll content herself with merely stalking him for now
Masky
Even though he and Hoodie are almost always together, he doesn’t join the group at the gas station
He needs to rest and recover, so he hangs back, but he immediately knows he missed out on something big when Hoodie comes back
And when Hoodie shows him the video, Masky's furious he missed out on it
Honestly, he gains some respect for the newbie for being so ballsy to pull something off like that
Unlike a lot of others, it doesn’t really affect the way he interacts with him afterward
He doesn’t get flustered, doesn’t tease or bully the guy about it, he doesn’t even mention it because, in Masky's opinion, it’s not that big of a deal
Really, all it does is make him more interested in seeing what other tricks the new guy has up his sleeve
He wouldn’t mind personally finding out about them~
Other than that, if he sees other creeps being excessive about their commentary towards the newbie, he’ll also shut them down alongside Jane
He figures it must suck for the poor guy, so he tries to minimize the damage however he can
Jane and Masky honestly kind of become the new guy’s lifeline after that incident
Nurse Ann
She also only hears about it much, much later since she usually stays off the grid
She’s masochistic, sadistic, and hypersexual, so she definitely gets having more… deviant sexual urges
Not to mention, with the sheer amount of strange people in that house, it really isn’t surprising that at least one of them would pull that kind of stunt
She doesn’t think too much of it as she goes about her work, but every now and then, she’s suddenly reminded of it out of nowhere
And she can’t help but think how fun it would be to use someone like that in her experiments~
So she keeps an eye out, and, similarly to Kate, she also hopes to have a random run-in with the new recruit
Honestly, she doesn’t even know who the new creep is or what he looks like—even if she did run into him—because they all look the same to her
But she knows that if she did get the chance to run into him, she also wouldn’t go easy on him
Honestly, Nurse Ann is definitely one of the more dangerous creeps, so garnering her attention is almost never a good thing
The new guy's unknowingly put himself in a lot of danger by attracting so many outsiders' attention
Offenderman
Oh, he absolutely adores hearing about this new creep~
He’s not technically banned from the mansion, but he’s on thin fucking ice, so he knows to be careful when he visits to meet him
Preying on people’s sexual urges is what he does best—it makes it all the easier to mold his victims into perfectly obedient little slaves~
So this new guy has him salivating at the thought of kidnapping him
Try as he might to be subtle about his intentions to whisk him away, Slender is, for obvious reasons, fully aware of what he’s trying to do
So new security measures are reinstated at the house, and the new guy is placed under extra protection
Which might be confusing to the new guy, since he doesn’t exactly know why he’s being so carefully protected
Why would anyone even care about a random newbie like him?
Even if he tries to ask Slender what the reasoning behind all the fuss is, Slender won't tell him because just knowing what Offender does can be risky
To counter the new safety precautions, Offender might try to bribe and manipulate creeps from the inside
And who knows; maybe one day, Offender will finally slip through Slender’s cracks and snatch up his prize~
Ticci Toby
Oh god oh god oh fuck
Initially the first one to suggest going for a snack run, he somehow blames himself for stumbling in on the new guy doing the dirty
He’s the first one to discover the scene, even before BEN walks in on it
And as soon as he sees it, as soon as he sees the new guy naked with his legs spread, squirming and whining with the barrel deep inside of him, Toby’s face goes red
He’s so close he can practically hear the slick sounds as he humps the weapon like a depraved little puppy
He’s frozen for a few seconds, too stunned to react, but once he comes to his senses, he immediately gets the hell out of dodge
But he doesn’t even make it all that far before he realizes—shit
There’s at least, like, five other creeps in here that might stumble in on him
He’s paralyzed in place as his mind races to figure out how to get everyone out without raising suspicion
But before he can think of a plan, BEN stumbles in on it and it’s all over
Not knowing what else to do, Toby practically makes a run for it because the secondhand embarrassment is too real
He comes face-to-face with Cody as he’s leaving, and when Cody asks what’s wrong, Toby blurts everything out before thinking twice
Needless to say, he’s insanely embarrassed about the whole thing, even though he’s not even the one who got caught
Poor guy can’t look the newbie in the eyes for a good few months after that incident
X-Virus
When Toby mentions a hideout off the side of an old highway, of course Cody wants to check it out
He thought it would be a nice, chill way to spend his evening, so you can just imagine his confusion when he runs into Toby, who looks like he just saw a ghost and is on the verge of crapping himself about it
Before he can even open his mouth to ask, Toby blurts everything out, and Cody is thoroughly stunned
The new guy is doing what? Here? Right now??
He can see that Toby is visibly shaken, so he does his best to calm him down
But the whole time he’s talking Toby down, all he can think about is how he wants this damn conversation to end so that he can go off and have a quick peek of his own
Like—it’s not his fault the new guy’s cute
And, surely, one quick little peek wouldn’t do anyone any harm, right?
Once Toby bails, Cody doesn’t think twice before going to the back of the store
A few creeps are huddled behind a shelf, watching the scene intently, and Cody gets his own spot to watch the show
He was already interested in the newbie before this, but now?
Oh, now he definitely wants more
Zalgo
The fact that he’s essentially the lord of the underworld, it’s nothing short of a miracle that news reaches him about a new sexually deviant creep
And at first, when the news does reach him, he honestly doesn’t care too much about it
Like, he’s basically the lord of sin—it takes a lot to impress him, even regarding sexual tendencies
It’s only one day, when nothing seems to be exciting him in the underworld, that he finally decides to investigate the new guy
What he discovers is actually fairly interesting, especially when he notices that other creeps and demons have developed an interest in him too
It means that the newbie might actually be more valuable than Zalgo initially realized
He gathers more intel on him, sending a few demons here and there to stalk him, all while remaining under Slender’s radar
And it, admittedly, is a long shot, but there’s a chance that this new guy might play a role in freeing the lord of the underworld from his imprisonment
He lays low for the most part, so it's not like the new guy is ever made aware of his presence, or even his existence as a whole
But the beginnings of a plan slowly yet surely start taking shape
Who knew such a small little mishap could cause such a stir?~

As You Are | Lestat De Lioncourt x Reader
ෆ summary in request above ^
“You sure you okay, ma chérie, you've been awfully quiet, Lestat said, his fingertips brushing against your hip.
It was one of those rare nights, after hunting, there was nothing else to do but to spend time with each other. You both spent decades without companionship, drowning in loneliness, before meeting each other and now you treasured quality time together.
“I’m okay, today is an old friend's birthday, and I can't help thinking of her,” you told him, climbing out of bed, you grabbed the folded photo from inside of your coin purse.
“You two are a little close be friends,” he said, making you laugh.
“She said people would say that,” you smiled, folding the photo back up.
“You’ve been with a woman, this friend of yours,” he quickly realized.
“Yes, you aren't the only one who doesn't discriminate,” you laughed at how theatrical he was. Lestat had been open about his diverse tastes and history, while you were oftentimes a closed book, listening to his stories, rather than telling your own.
“How did I not know this?”
“I guess it slipped my mind, I don't talk about it, I've learned things and healed, and have no regrets,” you shrugged.
“You cannot tell me that and not elaborate…”
“Well, early 1900s, I had obviously just been turned, I tried dating around for a bit, but nothing worked out, until Helen. I always felt things towards women, but you know how things were back then, I couldn't dare express these feelings to anyone. I probably would've gotten a lobotomy,” you said, making him snicker.
“I realized if I would be here forever, I needed to come to terms with myself. Helen lived in the same apartment building, and I, of course, began to flirt with her. She was like I once was, hiding her true identity, afraid of judgment from outsiders. We were together for some time, in secret. I eventually wanted to turn her, but she was too afraid, blinded by her own internal conflict. We ultimately parted, and she went on with her life. I didn't hear from her again, until I was invited to her funeral, by her children,” you told him, he listened attentively, his softened eyes staring at your face, as he held you close.
“Oh, ma chérie”
“For the longest, I struggled with accepting who I was, questioning what was wrong with me, but I eventually could see myself healing, as time went on. I dated a few others, but none could capture my heart like her, I wouldn't allow myself to fully enjoy and give in until I met you,” you smiled, pecking his lips.
“I thought I wasn't able to love again, after my Nicky, until you came along, and I suppose things worked out perfectly,” he said, his finger brushing against your face.
“We’re one and the same”
“I agree, although it does make things more interesting knowing you also have equally eclectic taste, we’ll have to explore this scandalous side of you,” he grinned.
“What did you have in mind?” you asked, laughing at the mischievous grin on his lips.
“Nothing, for now, I just want to love you, completely and unconditionally, as you are,” he snuggled against you.
“Yes, we can invite someone except not that banchy-singing whore,” you said, hearing his thoughts, questioning if you would be open to a third joining you two in bed, from time to time.
“Thank god, I thought I would have had to beg,” he said, wrapping his arms around you, as he rolled over.

Just some of my own TMA headcanons (I’m probably just gonna keep adding to the list on occasion or maybe make another list, who knows) - Edit I made another list which is a little more chaotic I won’t lie
Also I’m interested if people have any of their own that they’d want to add because I love reading other people’s x
There will probably be spoilers in this list but I’ll try to keep it broad :) x
Tim always wears short sleeves regardless of the weather
On the opposite Sasha always got a cardigan, she might not be wearing it but it’s stashed somewhere
Jon probably bit someone as a child
Martin had a folder on his work computer with pictures of cows in it
Sasha used to keep a picture of the four of them in her desk - Not Sasha got rid of it
Distortion Helen uses her hands a lot when she speaks
Elias irons his ties and then organises them by colour (They’re all the same colour but he claims the shades are different)
Martin and Jon used to play card games but Jon stopped once he realised he always knew what Martins cards were
Tim would wear those socks with the days of the week on them but would make a point of wearing the wrong socks on the wrong days just to annoy Jon
Martin likes to collect pin badges
Sasha’s definitely thrown a pen at Tim - She threatens to throw one at Martin but never would
Tim paints his nails on occasion and convinced Martin to do it a couple times, who in turn convinced Jon to do it
Specifically series 1 Jon had Martin for secret Santa and he have him a mug with a cow on it - Jon denied it every time he was asked
Martins the better baker but Jons the better cook -
Jon will tell everyone in the kitchen to get out if he’s cooking
Martin had a nightlight while sleeping at the institute and never told anyone but Jon found it once and replaced the batteries just in case they were close to running out
Distortion Helen seems like the kind of avatar to have a load of bracelets but those ones that make noise when someone moves their arm
Edit: I just wanted to say that I’m genuinely overwhelmed by the response to this because this is first time I’ve made a post like this of my own and people have been very lovely about it all and yeah this just my little soppy thank you for it xx
#tma headcanons#the magnus archives#these were so fun to make#I’ve started series five and I’m scared#the magnus archives memes#the magnus archives headcannon#this was my first time doing something like this#feel free to add more because I love these so much#I’m just gonna keep adding ones as I think of them#I love using tumblr to brain dump things because then I don’t have to explain the lore of characters for them to make sense#tma podcast#jonmartin#jonathan sims#martin blackwood#sasha james#tim stoker#tma shitpost

What do you like about the Odyssey? Besides some entertaining episodes (e.g. Circe or Calypso), I've never really been able to get into the Odyssey as a whole (I find the first 5 books especially dull). The Iliad really speaks to me more.
It's hard to really pinpoint what I like most about it but I love to talk about the Odyssey so I hope you like long posts hahaha
The first five books act as the exposition. When the Iliad ends, there's a general understanding that most of the surviving characters made it home. Menelaus and Helen have reunited, the catalyst for the Trojan War has been resolved. Agamemnon traversed the sea and made it back, and although he was killed by his wife Clytemnestra, there is no question about where he is; unlike Odysseus.
Telemachus has spent his entire youth without a father. When he finally decides to set out from Ithaca to find any leads on where Odysseus is, he is confronted with the fact that most everyone else has been accounted for. He sees Menelaus and Helen, the order of their kingdom, the comfort they have in each other and the bonds they have restored. Telemachus has known nothing but uncertainty, while his mother is forced to weave lies and deceptions to keep the suitors that plague their home at bay. The first five books really show how important one man can be when he is utterly lost, and what it would mean for everyone who loves him should he be found. These books also show the close interest that Athena, as patron of Odysseus, takes in his family. She steps into the chaos of Ithaca and gives Telemachus the inspiration to embark on his own journey, chasing the ghost of his still-living father.
When we finally reach Odysseus, he is not the same man that those who knew him in Troy described. They are the closest Telemachus can come to knowing what came of his father, but even they are separated by nearly a decade and the breadth of the sea. Penelope hasn't laid eyes on her husband in twenty years, there is no overestimating what that can do to a person's memory. Odysseus's first action is to cry. When finally Calypso is forced to allow Odysseus to leave, by order of Hermes, he makes his own raft and leaves at the first possible moment. He is fighting against the will of Poseidon, against the wrath he incurred, all alone. He has lost every single one of his men, every single person who could ever vouch for his identity, in a world where no one could recognize him, is gone. Despite this, he is still fighting to get back to Ithaca.
Odysseus is so utterly human in the text. When he is hosted by Alcinous, Odysseus asks the singer there to recount the story of the Trojan Horse. It's like landing at the doorstep of a stranger who graciously allows you to stay and immediately asking his DJ to play *your own* greatest hits - which in turn only upsets him. This also sets up the dramatic reveal of his identity (I like to imagine him looking around like, you guys remember this one? Yeah that's Me, I pinkie promise. Please give me 4000 drachmae and your best oarsmen (: ).
He recounts the story of how he got so utterly lost on the way back and one thing the Odyssey will tell you, to your face over and over again, is that Odysseus is a big time liar. But for some reason, his tale is so compelling it's hard to remind yourself of that when hearing it for the first time. Some points are so beyond baffling (like striking Polyphemus in the singular eye the poor sod has, and then once to the safety of his boat (which is on open water, the domain of said cyclops's father) loudly announcing his full gods-given name and mailing address, just in case anyone missed who it was) that it's like, yeah that was probably exactly what he did. This is the section of the story where we see Odysseus as he sees himself. This is his own reflection of the actions he made and the troubles that befell him because of it.
Odysseus is such a complex character that one of the epithets he is given is "polytropos", the many-faced or many-sided. Odysseus and his relationship to his own identity, which he can shed and don at any point that's convenient for him, is one of the main reasons I am obsessed with his story. This, and the exploration in an ancient text about what a close relationship with a deity, is something I am constantly thinking about.

Things about Paris the manhwa just does not fucking talk about:
-The thing he’s shown smoking in the beginning of the story is kava which apparently he’s using to treat insomnia. Which therefore makes his comments about how Helene's visage keeps him up at night in the manhwa very interesting in hindsight (and might also make sense why he feels maddened by her existence)
-One thing the light novel talks about that the manhwa doesn't do a very good job of is that Paris awakening as a dragon basically isolated him from the rest of the world to the point it's part of the reason why he was driven so mad. He's instinctually repulsed from humans as they're not part of the same species as him (which is!! very interesting worldbuilding!!! especially considering he takes on a human form!!) and has been left feeling alone for so long that it's basically made him unable to view humans around him as real people to care about
-Fian's existence in Paris's life is a REALLY FUCKING GOOD THING FOR HIM. You can just feel how much happier he is now that there's another of his species in his life and the overprotective big brother vibes he gives off towards Fian is actually stupidly cute.
Also really found it interesting too that he wants to keep away humans from Fian and shows possessiveness towards Fian because Fian is a dragon like him (and the fact he sends Lyla to where Fian is after figuring out that Lyla is Fian's "fairy" really speaks volumes of how much he cares about Fian)
-it's interesting to note too that Paris makes some interesting commentary where he laments why the dragons of Kylon want to get along whereas the siblings of Belliana want to kill each other. Him wondering if the instinctual bond dragons share can be broken is also interesting...
-Paris: I do not care for humans i only care for other dragons and will protect Fian if I have to from everyone but the fairy he adores
also Paris: so hey there's this really pretty elf descendant gal and i kind of maybe keep finding my thoughts straying back to her...pretty sure this won't be a problem though owO
-Paris’s first meeting with Helene (aka, the moment where he fell for her in the original novel ig) is when he goes to steal the Silver Dragon’s Heart Fragment. Considering him doing that is how he meets Helene in the manhwa, I can’t help but wonder if he’s the only character who gets to remain consistent with his OG!self in going insane in both the manhwa/LN plots
-Paris just,,, randomly helps Lyla out when Tyrone is trying to get back at her for insulting him,,, and i still think it's a crime that this scene got omitted from the manhwa (as well as scene of him following Lyla out of curiosity and then connecting the dots of who she is and leading her to Fian the moment he realizes how special she is to Fian). He's a fucked-up character but dear god do I find it impossible to hate him when he continuously shows the level of complexity that i crave seeing in characters
-”...his feelings for Helene were more of an obsession born of genuine possessiveness than love”
*looks at manhwa!Paris*
Yep that’s certainly him to a T. Sure hope he gets character development in the novel so i have hope he’ll get it in the manhwa and actually fall in love with Helene instead of,,, that
-really love that Lyla is still canonically spooked by him (she should be!!!). All these additional details about Paris also makes me D: bc jfc she is not kidding when she says he’s a psychopath and i hope her timeline’s version of him is a lot better of a person (esp to Helene if he indeed is still on track to being love interests with her like in the manhwa!!)
-”male protagonist from a broken family” DO TELL MORE LYLA DO TELL MORE. I know his father’s treatment of him is kind of fucked-up from the manhwa but i wanna know more about his home life im begging!!
-also Lyla calling him the male protagonist is really fucking funny to me. Lyla dear I think you meant to call him the antagonist holy fuck
-not sure if Paris is on track to being lovers with Helene in the LN's timeline but the connotation is there that he will. really interested to see how their relationship will progress in this timeline because genuinely the chemistry between them in the LN is different from in the manhwa
#the mighty extra#tme ln#paris valerian#i keep meaning to tag these post with character names and never do lmao#also brb writing out the paragraphs about Paris and him feeling isolated except in the case of Fian made me cry lmao#that hit home hard in a way i wasn't expecting jfc don't make me empathize with the red flag male lead like this#also ngl now i want him and Helene to be a thing even more#if only because i think they really match each other well even with changed circumstances in the LN#im really starting to get the feeling that what will be the trigger to get Paris to truly fall in love with Helene will be him-#being able to fall asleep because of her (cliche i know) due to feeling secure and happy around her#not sure what it will take to get Helene to fall in love with him in return but boi do i enjoy watching her#she's technically showed interest already but in a very dubious way kind of like in the manhwa#so until i catch up to the banquet chapter or past the S2 finale i expect im not going to get any hints on her end of her reciprocating#(also please for the love of god tell me we get an extended scene of Paris and Helene dancing at the banquet in the light novel)#(im still feeling snubbed the manhwa never showed them dancing together like COME ON)#also i wonder if Helene is to Lyla as to what Paris is to Fian#both in the manhwa and in the light novel#because considering these 4 are heavily intertwined i wouldn't be surprised if Paris and Helene are purposeful big sibling parallels#and the reason why Helene dislikes Fian in the manhwa is because she's possessively overprotective of Lyla#whereas Paris is possessively overprotective of Fian#and while Paris would like to keep away other humans from Fian#Helene wants to keep dragons away from Lyla#which kind of tracks considering Helene is hinted as prejudiced towards dragons in the manhwa and Paris the same to humans in the LN

Hello! Do you (and other Greeks) find "Hellenic polytheism" an acceptable term for the religion worshipping the ancient Greek gods? If not, what would you want people to call it instead? I feel strongly that I would not be able to change my belief itself, but I definitely want to be respectful in what I call it and my other actions
Hellenic Polytheism should be fine. You can introduce yourself as a Hellenic Polytheist.
People have a bit of a hard time with this hell of terms (get it? he he), so I am gonna create a mini-lexicon. It's not targeted to you in specific to use all these, it's just for whoever is interested to clear this up in their minds.
A very hellenic lexicon
Hellás = 1) the official term for Greece and the only one ever used by Greeks themselves (there is no equivalent of "Greece" in Greek), 2) a historical ancient region in central mainland Greece where southeast Epirus and southwestern Thessaly meet and where a lot of Achilles' soldiers supposedly originated from, 3) the administrative region of central mainland Greece during the Byzantine Empire
Hellenic = anything Greek (like you may say "this is an american movie", that's why you can use hellenic polytheism, because it means "greek religion of many gods"). And by anything Greek, we mean ANYTHING. Care to know what the "Greek Orthodox Church" is called in Greek?
You guessed it! Hellenic Orthodox Church...! So you see, how when foreigners say some things like "i'm hellenic, hellene, hellenist" like "what hellenic are you? coffee? bank? Christian?" You know?
Hellen = the mythological progenitor of the Greeks according to Hesiod. Not to be confused with Helen.
Héllene = a Greek by descent, nationality and / or ethnicity. And if we are being totally accurate, it's a Greek male. I don't actually know how it is pronounced in English but ideally keep the last e silent. (By the way we do not pronounce that h in the beginning in all these words for the last 1500 years or so.... just saying.)
Héllenes = the Greeks, just men or mixed. The last e is NOT silent.
English does not have gendered nouns but Greek does so technically there is a seperate word for Greek women but I don't know if this is transferable to English. If we could do it in theory and by following the trasliteration style of the Hellene, it should be something like:
*Hellenís / Hellenidae or Hellenides = Greek woman / women*
Hopefully this explains why random foreigners identifying as "Hellenes" is exremely problematic.
Helladic = pertaining to the geography and territory of Hellas and whatever happens strictly within its borders
Hellenisation = spread of Greek influence and culture, it is also used for cases of Greek assimilation in ancient times
Hellenistic = 1) something being characterized by particular Greek influence, 2) referring to the era after the Classical period and before the Roman period
Hellenicá = 1) the Greek language, 2) (infrequent) Greek matters, documented topics about the Greeks
Hellenism = The complete Greek culture, civilization and nationhood, the essence of being Greek.
Hellenist = 1) a specialist in the study of Greek language, literature, culture, or history, or an admirer of the Greek culture and civilization, 2) a person who adopted the Greek customs, language and culture during the Hellenistic period, 3) now, the English Wiktionary also adds the "a follower and practitioner of Hellenic religion" <- which one of the two??? XD, clearly following the trend of western classicist circles. In the Greek Wiktionary for the same exact term (Ελληνιστής) that last interpretation does not exist and I can guarantee you it is officially rejected. Here's why: the suffixes -ist and -ism (as well as all suffixes here) are suffixes of Greek origin and they signify that someone is something or is passionate and dedicated to something on the superlative or very very earnestly, essentially. So when someone says they are a hellenist, they are supposed to be dedicated or charmed by anything that makes something hellenic, not to be professional cherry pickers. Of course, everyone is allowed their preferences, however you can't be interested in a super specific / niche thing like a religion mostly practiced 2000-3500 years ago and simultaneously show complete disregard and ignorance on literally everything else about this civilization, history and its living people and call yourself a hellenist. It tears the word apart. By the way this is not targeted at you. You are here asking about it, wanting to do the right thing. I am referring to this thing happening in this forum that @alatismeni-theitsa 's Anon was complaining about; they obsess over the ancient religion and they hate everything Greek post the AD mark. That's not being a Hellenist. That's not a Hellenism forum. That's the exact opposite in fact. Very few people can correctly claim the term "hellenist".
BONUS: Philhellene is kind of synonym to "hellenist" and it means "friend / lover of the Hellenes and all things hellenic". But again it can surely be misused. Not all self-proclaimed Philhellenes were ones indeed. Some, like Lord Byron, were Philhellenes through and through, on the other hand.
Of course, one definitely does not have to go through what Lord Byron and other great Philhellenes of the 19th century went through to prove they are a Hellenist or a Philhellene! My point is that very very few people can correctly claim the identity of a Philhellene or a Hellenist.
Therefore, "Hellenic polytheist" is just fine.

had a thought of what if Airplane had leaned a little more into the self-insert idea for Luo Binghe when he was still at the early stages of writing, with an end result that Luo Binghe actually Looks Like That because he basically looks like Airplane but with long flowing hair and a more idealized figure
SQQ going "why the fuck did you make his face so pretty???" and Airplane bullshitting about plausibility while trying really hard not to blush. twisting his fingers and scuffing his toe like jeez bro he's not that good-looking...
which of course sets SQQ off because how DARE!?! not 'that' good-looking?!?! just look at him! he's xianxia Helen of Troy with a face that launched a thousand harems! like okay sure with looks like that it does make sense that half the female population was willing to timeshare a marriage with him, but it's also totally unfair to SQQ, who has no recourse against those looks either! and who could? that is the most beautiful face ever!
Airplane's getting flustered. tries valiantly to make the case that objectively speaking Luo Binghe isn't that good-looking, it's just that SQQ is biased, but boy does that not go over well. SQQ has hitched the tattered remnants of his self-perception as a straight man onto the idea that Luo Binghe is just so devastatingly attractive anyone would want to hop into bed with him, and he is not letting go of it, so Airplane is just gonna get wrecked with inadvertent compliments
bonus if the Shang Qinghua look is actually the result of several illusions because when Airplane first transmigrated in, he got the same face too, and foresaw potential problems if the half-demon protagonist turned up looking like him. so he used illusions. he doesn't actually look all that different, in fact! the illusions just make it so that when people see him, they get a strong impression that he's unremarkable, so they don't really register what his face actually looks like and their brains fill in the assumption that he must just be kinda plain
oooh ooh double bonus if the system inserted a behind-the-scenes explanation for it too, which is that Shang Qinghua is actually unwittingly related to Su Xiyan!
and the whole thing comes to light post-epilogue when Shang Qinghua's illusions get stripped away by some monster-of-the-week, while everyone except Mobei Jun has a freak out about why do you look just like Luo Binghe?! (Mobei Jun isn't freaking out because he already figured out how to see past the illusions and just assumed everyone else wasn't mentioning it for some human cultural reason or something) and then Yue Qingyuan calmly explains that Luo Binghe's mom is Shang Qinghua's matrilineal cousin. Shang Qinghua's mother and Luo Binghe's human grandmother were half-sisters.
what? how does Yue Qingyuan know? you think that Cang Qiong doesn't check up on the candidates for the peak lord positions before handing off power, doesn't make sure there are no conflicts of interest or divided loyalties to other sects? what sorts of things do people imagine Qiong Ding's diplomats do? (I don't know either but, for the purpose of this scenario at least some of it is tracking down this stuff -- YQY handled most of it personally for his generation's ascension because he didn't want anyone else digging into his and Xiao Jiu's pasts) anyways, the connection could have been troublesome for its ties to Huan Hua Palace, but by the time it came to light Su Xiyan was deceased and there was no evidence that Shang Qinghua had ever even met her. so it wasn't deemed significant enough to matter, was just made note of and then mostly forgotten
so Shang Qinghua is like "oh THAT is why you kept bringing her up to me back then?!" because at the time he'd just been fully in "haha how would I know anything about the impending plot and the tragedies I am both partly responsible for and powerless to prevent haha that's so funny shixiong I KNOW NOTHING" mode, which luckily at the time was easily read as him just not wanting a dead cousin he never met to tank his chances of securing a promotion
SQQ is floored. he is having issues about this. Shang Qinghua is related to Binghe? Shang Qinghua looks exactly like him?! wait. Binghe has human family? still alive? like grandparents and stuff out there, who might want to meet him...?
Luo Binghe decides to step in at that point because he does not want to meet any more relatives! no more surprise relatives! no!
luckily this distracts Shen Qingqiu from thinking about all of the things he's said to Airplane about Binghe's looks for long enough for Shang Qinghua to flee the scene
#svsss#scum villain's self saving system#bingqiu#moshang#cumplane#well kinda cumplane anyway#by implication#long post#what if sqh can't get his illusions back up#everyone keeps bothering him even more now to ask why he's hot all of a sudden#it's even worse than when they just used to bother him about fixing broken doors or balancing budgets#sqq is not gonna be normal about this#'you said binghe wasn't a self-insert!!!'
