Slade stopped near the center of the room next to a small pillar that swayed when he got closer. Dick narrowed his eyes. Pillars don’t sway. Blinking the blurriness from his eyes, Dick realized that Slade wasn’t standing next to a pillar. He was standing next to a person—a child, whose hands were chained above their head. 

Gripping the young boy’s hair, Slade tilted his head up and said, “You ruined the surprise, kid. I was going to have him all cleaned up before bringing him to you.”

Dick felt his heart stop in his chest as he stared at the boy. 

The boy who had blood dripping down his face. 

The boy, who, upon having his head lifted, forced his eyes open and whispered, “Richard?”

Red Son hums again, a quiet indication he heard MK but doesn’t have anything to say.

“Have you been able to make any headway with the research, though?” MK asks, making Red Son pause.

“Ugh,” he crosses his arms, his fingers tapping on his sleeve. “Yes and no. I wished to discuss things with Monkey King’s ex-advisor, but she’s currently—”

“His ex-advisor??” MK’s eyes widen in surprise. “You’re in contact with them? They’re still alive???”

“Well—of course I am.” Red Son makes a gesture as he talks. “Her name is Lihua. She and her son, Fengshe, have lived with my family since…” He doesn’t finish the sentence for a moment, as if he were remembering something. He shakes his head, then says, “Since Flower Fruit burned. She was the one who helped me research Monkey King’s power so I could remove the staff and free Father.”
