I was just wondering (because I've been thinking about it for a while), how do you pronounce skagen's name?

Afrikaans is my third (?) language and in my head I pronounce Skagen like:

Skaaw-/x/in (basically the 'a' is a long sound like 'aaaw' and the 'g' is pronounced with a guttural bach like you're gargling harshly or something) if that makes sense.

How do you pronounce it?

oh my god thats really cool! skagen in afrikaans... i love hearing how non-swedish speakers pronounce my silly ocs names!!

in swedish skagen is pronounced like. how do i even explain it. uhm. its skaa with a long A and gen with a hard G, if you put it in swedish google translate it will pronounce it correctly! same with solvei and lovart (although in my dialect the melody is different if that makes sense)

AND AS FOR THEIR LAST NAMES JUST BECAUSE... gipp is pronounced like the english yip, stiltje is pronounced kind of like still-sheh and sjöberg. well put that one in swedish google translate too because the sj-sound and ö are hard to explain 💀

#linguistics and languages in general are so much fun i love talking about dialects and pronunciation of things HEHEHE #sidenote though because skagen is a place in denmark and in danish the g isnt pronounced at all in this case #instead theres like a glottal stop and the A to my swedish ears sounds more like an Ä #skagen is named after skagenröra which is a dish named after the danish town skagen lol #its a western swedish dish though idk why its named after skagen in denmark #ask
