Has anyone in my circle listened to the Sixth Doctor adventures box sets Purity Undreamed, Purity Unleashed, and Purity Unbound? They're so good and I think I'm gonna go feral.

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 3, Poll 14

A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Hebe Harrison-Doctor Who Big Finish
Qualifications:
She's a wheelchair user, and in my heart she is bi.
Propaganda:
She is hands down the best disabled rep I can think of. She doesn't take shit from ableists and neither should you!
Fun fact from the mods: her VA also plays Shirley Ann Bingham in the main(?) Doctor Who.
Frodo Baggins-The Lord of the Rings
Qualifications:
Frodo & Sam are very homoerotic. As JRRT knew and loved several openly gay authors, one of his closest friends was suspected of being gay, and with other historical events of the time, you can’t convince me it wasn’t at least a little bit subconsciously on purpose. Frodo, of course, has ptsd and probably some form of chronic illness due to the lingering effects of his nazgul wound.
Propaganda:
Frodo carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and was forever changed by it. The literal devil’s soul was constantly around his neck, always tempting him, growing stronger by the minute, twisting him and torturing him mentally. He didn’t know how his journey would end when he offered to take on the burden of destroying the most evil object in the world, but he chose to do it anyway. And he was forever ruined by it - so much that he never truly came home, not really. And once he was home, life was so thoroughly ruined for him that he could not stay. There is one other known account of this happening - Arwen’s mother, who was captured and tortured for years by orcs, and while her body was healed, her mind could not be, and she, too, sailed away. Do you understand that? Frodo’s journey was on the same level as *being captured and tortured for years on end.* He is probably the gayest non-canon confirmed character I have ever come across, queer-coded through and through, and his ptsd was enough that he could not come home, and had to sail to paradise to find peace. He deserves everything.

i long for the days of shot-by-shot breakdowns of any new trailer, and since im not on twitter (where this has undeniably already happened) im doing it myself here
why is nobody talking about hebe harrison
so the trailer starts with a silly mini trailer. we'll see all of these shots later on and i'll talk about them more then. tenteen looks around bewildered (best guess: special #1 The Star Beast
donna surrenders (best guess: special #2 Wild Blue Yonder)
avengers tower/UNIT flies the tardis around on a helicopter (an anniversary tradition? (best guess: special #3 The Giggle)
explosions in a front hallway (best guess: special #1 The Star Beast)
peekaboo (best guess: special #1 The Star Beast - we'll get to why later)
and then the title card.
we start, in earnest, with a stock footage shot of London at night, which RTD has made reference to in recent DWMs. this is the opening shot of special #1 The Star Beast
then we get Donna, talking to her mum, "Sometimes I think there's something missing. Like I had something lovely..." - this is clearly immediately post-End of Time Donna, no memories of her travels with the Doctor, so special #1 The Star Beast
intercut with the Doctor snooping around a busted up, industrial area. importantly, he's alone. without knowing exactly how Liberation of the Daleks is going to end, i think it's safe to assume the guy is travelling alone at the start of these specials, so this shot (and the ones that follow) is from special #1 The Star Beast
Donna continues, "... and it's gone." over a shot of her with different hair and top. the colours look close enough to the other Star Beast shots to have me think this is the same episode, but it's tough to say. it also seems like the trailer is going chronologically, which would mean this is from special #1. the music, voiceover, and her *emphatic blink* might indicate this is *the moment she remembers* but with that i'll cease putting on my clown makeup.
back to Donna in the kitchen, "I lie in bed thinking... what have I lost?" intercut with this creepazoid, who is definitely investigating Beep the Meep's spaceship construction. this is probably the same sequence as the jumping-through-the-hole shot above. this is where we get our peekaboo shot again. buddy is definitely looking at a nasty Meep warship being constructed. jury is still out on whether he remembers this exact thing happening back when he had curls and a scarf...
switch POV, time for Tenteen's Story. this is all for sure still in special #1 The Star Beast. he lands the tardis (i share RTD's enthusiasm that it's 13's exterior!!!) and jolts out of it (unexpected landing? does he recognize Beep's distress signal? is he thinking about all the melty daleks he just left behind?)
he begins to infodump (to whom?), "I've got this friend, Donna Noble..." and we get these two complementary shots: Dr. Who turns somewhat tentatively toward a stack of boxes, and Donna and Rose are in the same area, carrying boxes (shopping? moving? looks like rolls of tissue paper and bubble wrap in Donna's box) - for consistency's sake, i note this is all still part of special #1 The Star Beast
("I had to wipe her memory to save her life") as if the infodump wasn't enough, we have some shots of ten, the parthenogenesis, DoctorDonna, and one of the worst things to ever happen on this show. in case you forgot... (i wonder if and sincerely hope that we don't get these flashbacks in the episode itself)
and now we get context for where and to whom Tenteen is saying all this: he's sitting, wearing a new version of ten's "brainy specs" (can you hear me rolling my eyes?), saying, "if she remembers me, she will die" to...
HEBE HARRISON!
Hebe is a companion of the Sixth Doctor, whose adventures have hitherto only been on audio with Big Finish, and whose departure from the tardis has not yet been described (as far as i know), since stories with her only began to be published in May 2022. she's a 21st-century lady, though. she is also (according to the Tardis Wiki) the first companion that uses a wheelchair. this is very exciting for me (big finish brain rot) though i have not listened to any of Hebe's stories. Hebe was on the tardis with Mel too, which may be a fun coincidence or very relevant for next series!
what does Hebe think of this Doctor who is so much older and very different to the one she travelled with? how did they even meet up? where the heck are they? idk but im downloading Water Worlds right now
okay moving on
Doctor: "So what happens next? A spaceship crashes right in front of her, it's like she's drawing us in" over shots of that same busy market from before, Rose looking excited, and the Meep's spaceship burning through the atmosphere over a WeWork. I'll also note that the Doctor says "drawing *us* in" - meaning Hebe and him? is there some cosmic stuff happening to throw companions, Doctors, and other aliens in front of Donna's path to revive the DoctorDonna? who would do that? why? what's clear from this dialogue is that the conversation with Hebe takes place after the scene in the market with the spaceship crash landing. if i' m right about the snooping scenes' place in the original comic's narrative, they'll come after the Wrarth Warrior fight below
(Beep: "ah!" Donna: "what the hell?!") Donna discovers Beep the Meep hiding among (Rose's?) stuffed animals in their shed. i have to say i like the decision to make Beep's fur white, though personally the blue fur colour is what i think of when i think of The Most High
Tenteen in a residential neighbourhood with soldiers nearby (this is the first shot in the trailer of the Wrarth Warrior battle). is the Doc with the soldiers? is he following the Wrarth on his own? i'm curious to see how they adapt the comic story, since it seems like Rose follows a bit of a different path than Sharon
namely because her mum seems to find out about the Meep before the Doctor does (Donna: "we've got a bloody martian in the shed!")

Put Big Finish's box set Water Worlds on your radar. Because it does in fact give the Doctor (the Sixth Doctor, specifically) a marine biologist companion, and she does in fact want to study alien fish. Her name is Hebe Harrison and she's also stubborn as hell and incredibly horny. She's also disabled rep - she's played by the same person who played Shirley in the recent UNIT stories and so uses a wheelchair. Big Finish does a good job of valuing and exploring her identity as a disabled person while also not making that a core part of her personality. Probably not a perfect job (and I will say I think they get better at it in later stories), but a good job. There's a reason I mentioned her being stubborn and horny first.
Her story continues in the Purity trilogy (Purity Undreamed, Purity Unleashed, and Purity Unbound) that don't have as much marine biology but are also like SO SO GOOD. I don't want to get too into why to avoid spoilers, but the main villain is one of the most fucking terrifying characters Big Finish has ever done.
(also the Sixth Doctor is also travelling with Mel during this time period which makes Mel and Shirley both interacting with UNIT really funny to me)
I need a companion who’s a biologist, the doctor asks them where they want to go and they just slam a rejected grant proposal onto the tardis console and are just like ‘everywhere I need to get samples for my research from, I don’t have to worry about a budget if I’m in a time machine’ and the Doctor of course is like well we could go anywhere and any when, don’t you want to see aliens, to which the companion just responds that they’ll let the doctor take them to see aliens if he takes them to the bottom of a bunch of ocean trenches to study deep sea fish

Speaking as a person with a disability I would love to see a disabled actor play the Doctor, and it would certainly be interesting. With it the show might touch on subjects its never approached before so I am all for it.
I have watched the show since 1982 so Peter Davison was my Doctor if we are talking the new era of the show I would pick David Tennant as my favourate Doctor

Update
Ruth may not have been cast as the next Doctor who actor Ncuti Gatwa got that role when it was announced in May 2022. But Ruth Madeley will be appearing Doctor who proper playing somebody called Shirley Anne Bingham as witnessed in the trailer for the Doctor who 60th Aniversary adventures shown on Christmas day.
You can see the trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtzRP0fycII Ruth is no stranger to the Doctor who universe as she plays the 6th Doctors companion Hebe Harrison in the Big Finish Doctor who audio series. You can find more information about those by clicking here https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/doctor-who-the-sixth-doctor-adventures-water-worlds-2517 and https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/doctor-who-the-sixth-doctor-adventures-water-worlds-2517 and here is the link for the final box set in the trilogy https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/doctor-who-the-sixth-doctor-adventures-purity-unleashed-2623
During the coverage of this years Eurovision song contest the BBC showed another trailer this time with more footage and titles for all three specials its unclear if Ruth Madeley Just appears in the one special or is in all 3 here is the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDi_OQxVqMY&t=21s

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 6
The Fourth Doctor once almost drowned in a lake while following giant cat footprints.
While "pimping up" Bessie, the Eleventh Doctor turned her into a monster truck.
The Seventh Doctor takes five to six sugars in his tea.
The Seventh Doctor once admitted that he enjoyed destroying worlds.
The Second Doctor once found parts of the Sixth Doctor's outfit in his TARDIS wardrobe. He decided that he would never wear such a thing.
Khavûl, the main enemy in the "Chronomancer" audio starring the Sixth Doctor, Mel Bush, and Hebe Harrison, is a Drornidian and a Paradox Mage. The planet Drornid would play an important role during the War in Heaven.
In the far future where it is not meaningful to measure time, Evelyn Smythe became a CyberController.
While training to be an astronaut, Steven Taylor played the titular character in a stage production of Hamlet.
The Eighth Doctor has kept kittens in his pockets before.
Chris Cwej has used body bepples, a form of genetic alteration that can change one's physical appearance. He has taken the forms of a person-sized teddy bear and a catboy with tufted ears.
The Doctor was given an avatroid named Badger when he was very young because he needed a tutor, friend, and protector. Badger gives literally almost rib-cracking hugs.
When Rose Tyler and the Tenth Doctor considered getting a pet for the TARDIS, they found a pet store that was run by peaceful Cybermen. Only when Rose protested against the conversion of mice to Cybermice did the Doctor defeat the Cybermen.
The Second Doctor was once seen offering a prayer to "the gods of his own people."
The Eighth Doctor also took Charley Pollard back in time to kill the would-be dictator as a baby but was foiled as well.
The Second Doctor can play the recorder hanging upside down.
Through his forced regenerations, the Doctor lost the ability to make a good soufflé.
The Master once set Jo Grant up on a date with Mike Yates.
Dalek casings are made of polycarbide and dalekanium.
Rose Tyler was once infected with a lagnon grub, so the Tenth Doctor put her into a dream where he was dating Jackie and Mickey had an Amazonian girlfriend. The resulting jealousy drove the grub from her body.
While most future incarnations looked at the First Doctor with deep respect, the Eleventh Doctor did not, calling him a selfish idiot and a coward.
Glitterguns are effective weapons against the Cybermen.

So it's a very common opinion that Big Finish stories are not as good/interesting as they used to be. I don't know if that is actually a dominant opinion, but I see it a lot. I had a realization a few days ago that got me to a point where I feel like I can respectfully explain why I firmly disagree with this opinion.
To be clear! If you hold the opinion that classic Big Finish is better, than I still think that is a very valid opinion! I actually really hope that this post turns into a discussion with the classic Big Finish fans.
So, to clarify, my opinion is that Big Finish has always been good, but has notably increased in quality over time. For the record, my favorite thing Big Finish has done is probably the second half of the Doom Coalition subseries (published 2016-2017). Other favorites include Dalek Universe (2021) and the Purity Trilogy (2022-23).
My understanding of the criticisms of modern Big Finish are as follows: in the early 2000s, Big Finish was incredibly creative and was able to make some really dark and off-the-wall stories and create some really new and compelling characters, whereas today a lot of Big Finish is much more restricted in the sorts of stories they can tell and lean much more heavily on characters from the tv show, leading to stagnation and less interesting stories. I really don't want to be strawmanning here, so if I am mischaracterizing the argument, please let me know!
My main counterargument to this is that Big Finish is currently doing so much more than they were doing in the early 2000s. Back in those days they made what, 20-25 stories a year? These days, it's probably over 100 a year. And so, with this change, the amount of types of stories has allowed to increase dramatically. In my opinion, the really inventive, twisted stories still exist and are still being made frequently. They just aren't the main thing Big Finish does.
I should probably give some examples.
Stranded is a sixteen-part series starring the Eighth Doctor that I've compared to classic Big Finish before for having a lot of stories that are told in unconventional ways and going to personally dark places. The finale of the Purity trillogy, Purity Unbound, is an alternate-timeline cavalcade that feels like an shorter, Earth-based reimagining of the Divergent Universe arc.
But my biggest example is Torchwood. Especially the monthly Torchwood stories (This is the revelation that I had earlier). Big Finish Torchwood has been a massive collection of really dark, imaginative, up off-the-wall stories. And yeah, there are some of classic Big Finish that isn't kid-friendly that they couldn't do on Doctor Who anymore. They didn't stop making stories like that, though! They moved those stories over to the more adult and darker sibling series.
And re-characters - this is mostly from a youtube video I saw. I respect the youtuber (Council of Geeks) a lot, but she said that Big Finish is currently leaning on preexisting characters too much and isn't creating interesting characters like they used to - specifically citing Charley Pollard and Evelyn Smythe as excellent characters Big Finish had created in its classic days.
My counter argument to that is as follows:
New Big Finish characters created for Doctor Who between 1999-2004. Companions are bolded, and arguable companions are italicized: Charley, Evelyn, Erimem, Bev Tarrant, C'rizz, Kro'ka, Hex, Nimrod, Vansell, that unnamed Gallifreyan President, Cassie Schofeild
New Big Finish characters created for Doctor Who between 2020-2025. Companions are bolded: Raven, Naomi Cross, Hebe Harrison, Patrica McBride, Elise Kaplan, Elise's Ron, Tania Bell, Ken and Robin Bright-Thomson, Tony Claire, Tony's Ron, Aisha and Zakia Akhtar, Hieronyma Friend, Case, Callen and Doyle, Valarie Lockwood, Patricia Lockwood, Roanna, Kiera Sanstrom
I define a new character as an individual who appears on audio, is used for multiple releases within that time period, and has no prior appearances. I also restricted myself to stories starring the Doctor - I would be here all day if I went into other Whoniverse stories that didn't star the Doctor.
My point, if it wasn't clear, is that saying that Big Finish is making less characters than it used to is incorrect (unless I'm misunderstanding parameters). If you want to say that the 1999-2004 characters are better or more creative, then that would be a valid opinion to have! I don't agree with that, but that's a valid opinion.
And if you want to point out that Big Finish is also spending more time retreading old ground then it used to, then yeah. It is. But again, Big Finish is just doing so much more than they used to in general. They can do that and also do new stuff.
Okay, that's it for this, I think. If you have a response to my thoughts here, I'd love to hear it!

Full cast for The War Between the Land and the Sea

Fun fact: All of these cast members have been in Doctor Who before, four of them as different characters!
Jemma Redgrave is returning as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient is returning as Christofer Ibrahim.
Ruth Madeley is returning as Shirley Anne Bingham, and she previously played Hebe Harrison in Big Finish:
Russell Tovey was Alonso Frame:
Gugu Mbatha-Raw was Tish Jones, Martha's sister:
Colin McFarlane is returning (!) as General Austin Pierce from Torchwood. He also played Jonathan Moran in series 9:
Doctor Who is never beating the "UK only has 12 actors" allegations.

Mel and Hebe are an amazing ship - they care about each other so much! I fucking love the way Hebe pulls Mel's pigtails, the way the both of them tease each other & take care of each of her. & I literally cannot say much else or it will spoil, but *please* listen to their audios!

Have Doctor Who characters been submitted?
Yes, we’ve run Shirley Ann Bingham, Hebe Harrison, and Ryan Sinclair. The First Doctor, Hanne, The Doctor (are there not multiple doctors?), The Master, Diane Curtis, and The Eleventh Doctor (fun fact, he was the 3000th google form submission) have all been submitted. (Extra fun fact: the majority of Doctor Who submissions were for Shirley Ann Bingham and Ryan Sinclair)
