The "what kind of soul gives you what heartsword shape" rules for humans are really well-defined, but less so for Tamaputians. We just know they always draw lei o mano -- daggers with blades made of shark teeth.

design concept for a knight/fantasy AU heartsword! trying to go for that 80/90s anime vibe...

he's a human prince, but he was given so many faerie blessings upon his birth that he always came off as a bit otherworldly and strange with gold eyes glowing ever so slightly. rumors circulated that he might actually be a changeling.

when a great danger befell his kingdom, he made a big sacrifice that saved his people, but caused him to fall into an eternal sleep. he was only unintentionally awoken from his slumber over a century later by a wandering bandit who was probably trying to loot the place.

he cannot remember his name, and for all he knows he might have traded it away in exchange for the safety of all he held dear. he DOES however, seem to be in possession of a sword decorated with hearts...

Spent today designing shoes for Heartbeatz!

I'm also trying to settle on a good weapon for her that fits her theme. She fights monsters, so I initially went with the Heartsword, but I thought a bow might go better with the Cupid theme? Im not crazy about the bow design yet but it's just the first rendition. I also need to incorporate music somehow....

kanae's black rose episode always makes me wonder where she got her sword from. the student-council-member-equivalent people to her elevator issues are anthy and akio (mostly him i think), but the sword she uses doesn't look like either of the swords we see pulled from anthy and we never even get the implication of akio even having a heartsword. nobody ever draws it at least, probably because letting someone do that is letting them have power over you which is not something akio ever really does. most likely it's her own sword which is such an interesting contrast to the other black rose duelists (especially if you believe the theory of kanae being a previous duelist) and opens a lot of other questions. who pulled it from her? herself? akio? (just like he pulls utena's sword in ep 38? utena/kanae parallelism never stops.) whatever actually happened, it's a very interesting narrative choice not to show us. too private? too intimate? too revealing this early in the show?

so, about Anthy's sword

Ok it's been a few days, I know, and I brought it up at the time but this frankly pretty little detail of the Utena finale is still screwing with me.

See, during That Moment, Anthy has what is pretty unmistakably her own sword. It's not the Sword of Dios, it's not one of the swords of hate, absolutely no other sword in the show has that black hilt.

The show has a lot of heartsword theft, and even when it isn't stolen, we're consistently told that the situation is that it's either difficult or impossible to draw those things without help. (Evil Therapy Mad Science Man describes it as "it's so very rare for somebody to harness their own heart to it's proper potential, especially the young. That's why you get loved ones to do it" during the black rose arc)

And then Anthy draws her own for the purposes of making a show of smashing somebody else's heart and you can only see what happened for like, two shots if you're managing to focus on anything other than the person who just got stabbed.

It's just. So much. There's a lot going on there.
