I swear to actual Gog no nom-transfem outside of Tumblr actually understands June as a character and it will be the death of me. If I see another cavalcade of people turn up at the slightest mention of her name saying "ohhh I don't see it, I don't think it makes sense, tbh it'd just be better if they didn't at this point" I'm going to turn into the Joker. I read further down on that "June would be better as a trans guy imo I'm not transmisogynistic I mean femtransphobic" reddit thread and it made me want to become a nomad wandering the Appalachian peaks

Yeah like I'm gonna be real. I think entering fandom and using characters as nothing more than a source for projection really screws up your actual reading of the text (said as someone who has done that before!) And if you're unwilling to let go of that interpretation, you're going to be operating in a fundamentally different reality than everyone else who bothers to read the text.

June at this point is on the edge of becoming canon. She's been "canon" for years now, the evidence and reading of June as transfem has been thoroughly documented and discussed. She is a thing. That is happening. And while Homestuck often draws in fandom ideas and discussion, it's rarely going off of things that weren't at least partially in the text themselves.

I don't hold all of Homestuck's text as scripture. My distaste for, say, transmasc Roxy, has been growing as I actually began to read and understand more. And if people want good transmasc readings, there are plenty of great options! Jane, Dirk, Aradia and Nepeta are all wonderful examples of strong transmasc readings. I'd say there are, on the whole, maybe fewer than transfem readings, just because Homestuck is a very transfeminine story. It's about trying to escape and defeat the ultimate force of masculinity that pervades and lords over the story, contrasted by the Space aspect, which has some of the most transfeminine goddamn characters in the whole comic (even a basically canonical one in Calliope). It's a story with Vriska Goddamn Serket in it for the love of god!!!!

Also not to get too deep into the weeds but arguments like "well she actually admired her dad a lot and wanted to be like him" seem to forget the Literal Familial Strife he had with his dad every day, or the fact that his dad always seems to be a bit of a sore subject, or maybe, perhaps, John is not always being one hundred percent honest about his feelings about his father who died when he was thirteen. Honestly, even outside of a transfeminine interpretation, it's just a deeply surface-level reading of John.

every once in a while a discussion flares up on tumblr:  separatism vs activism reading through the various arguments I find myself agreeing with both sides in a lot of places.   the activism side argues that without it, we wouldn’t have the right to vote, bank accounts, property ownership, financial independence, sexual harassment and abortion laws, a lot of practical structures that free women in concrete ways.  i completely agree with this. the separatism side argues that women need a space away from men to experience themselves as human beings, to experience freedom and to experience female solidarity, and to develop networks of mutual aid.  I also completely agree with this. and then everyone starts fighting, which i really don’t understand.   We need both!  Both is good!   There are more than enough women in the world to do all the projects!  We can have some women creating separatist spaces for women to take shelter in, and we can have some women banding together to create practical change that free women in the short term.   What is there to argue about? I mean, maybe the background of this is the whole lesbian vs straight women thing?   Which tbh i also don’t understand why we have to fight about this.  I’m a lesbian, and the majority of my friends and feminist collaborators are straight women.  just by looking at the women around me I’m very very aware of how being partnered with a woman saves me an incredible amount of bullshit in my life, and yet I’m equally aware of why women choose to be het-partnered. for example in our organization there’s one women whose job title includes the word ‘responsible’.  Her husband began a campaign to undermine her participation by telling her that because her job title said ‘responsible’ that when our organization ‘inevitably bankrupted’ she would be left holding the legal debt which then (his main point) would impact him.  So she was scared by him into wanting to leave her position, when we really don’t have anyone else who can fill that right now, and so it would have caused a huge strain on us, but also, she’s perfect for this position, it’s very good for her, and she likes the work.  We were able to show her that he was just fucking with her, that the legal responsiblity for the money actually lay with a different role in the org, but it was yet another example of how men could reach into our private business and stir us about, because of how women are so financialy and emotionaly bound up with their legal male partners. so, do I cut off my friendship with this woman just because her husband is a danger to us?  Obviously not, because her husband is even more of a danger to her, and I’m trying to support her until her children are old enough that she can safely choose to leave him.   Is it irritating that her husband can just reach through her and fuck with us like that?  Absolutely.  Am I angry that women are constantly misled into marriage and find out too late that they are trapped?  Of fucking course.   Do I then conclude that all straight women are bullshit?   Also of course not.   But am I going to be cautious about who joins the group in future, and only let in lesbians?   Also of course not.  Because every set of hands is valuable and necessary, and we do other things to protect ourselves (like not let any man have a position of power in the org).  so what I want to ask is,  what is the separatism/activism divide about? why are people making it a choice between the two things?  is the foundational problem just either-or thinking?    if you are separatist why do you side-eye male-involved women?   if you are a male-involved woman, why do you side-eye separatists?

Roman is a patient man and it takes a lot to hit that level of anger for him to lose this skill in communication while arguing.

But when he does, he sees red and simply doesn't care about anything he does or says.

But the moment he sees you crying, he stops.

He takes a breath and sometimes even walks out to compose himself before he returns to clear it up with a clearer mind.

He'll speak it out gently this time. Making sure to make you feel better anyway that helps you, whether that be with space, or affection.

Comforting you but still sorting out the reasoning for your argument. He's not the type to sweep something under the rug. He sorts it out then and there.

But it's rare he reaches that level of anger, so arguments don't happen much since he's the type to calmly sort it out rather than lash out and shout.

This big boy hates . HATES . Arguments. Especially with those he loves. So most of the time he does anything he can to avoid arguing with you.

But on the occasions that you do argue, he's the type of person to get frustrated and aggraved at the fact you're both arguing rather than the reason of the argument itself.

So it'd be rare you'd ever seriously argue, or he'd argue back because he always finds a way to doubt the fire before it blows up.

Those very rare moments where he does get pushed to blow up, he tends to just splurt out words without much thought but instantly stops and says sorry. Like a thousand times.

He apologises as soon as it all slips out and pretty much drops the argument so he doesn't hurt you anymore. He hates hurting you.

If you cry, he will literally feel like the shittest human to exist. Comforting you, telling you it wasn't true. If the argument was valid, he'd speak to you about it a day later when he knows you're okay.

He'd honestly hate himself for weeks after. He'll push and pull, wanting to love you as usual, but feels like you're still upset and believe what he had said, and he's a mixture of emotions.

He'll end up coming to you with a pout, claiming he's sad but refuses to tell you why (he doesn't want to remind you of what he said) and wants to cuddle with you until he knows you're both okay.

You end up leaving them half finished because you literally can't get through to him. He's like speaking to a stupid brick wall.

okay so i lost my dad unexpectedly when i was 18. i was a freshman in college and my little brother was a freshman in high school (darry/soda age gap sibs :p ) and i *literally* can not express just how different our experience was with it. soooo it’s time to project !! this turned into a whole thinkpiece i really didn’t expect to write this much lol

for argument’s sake, i’m just gonna go with darry took a gap year after hs and was a freshman when his parents died. they died right around his 20th birthday, and given the timing of it he was most likely still on winter break. pony would have been a freshman and soda would have been a junior and hadn’t dropped out yet (this isn’t meant to be divisive or questioning the canon timing i’m just throwing this in to establish the timeline i’m going with here).

oh darry,, bro is not having a good time

going through a loss in college is such a lonely experience. darry was sort of established with some people at school and he definitely had friends but at the end of the day, most east side type families couldn’t afford to send their kids to college so most of his friends don’t really know his family or much about his background. the social conditioning he went through with paul and co. was enough to get him into crowds just like the kids from the west side instead of scholarship kids, but once a greaser, always a greaser.

darry went through a lot of heartache leaving school. obviously he would do it again in a heartbeat, his brothers meant more to him than anything in the world. the thing is, he didn’t fully grasp everything he was giving up when he got custody. any hope of he had of going to college on an athletic scholarship or with the safety net of his parents was gone. he was the sole provider for two teenagers. and he just had to learn to be okay with that, whether or not he regretted giving up on college or not.

he tries to go to his dad’s boss to see if he can take over his position since it was open and they were family friends, but it’s a tenure position and the best he can do is offer darry a job with the roofing division of the company.

he can hardly look soda in the eye when he asks him to come along to help him pack up his dorm room. he’d left most of his things there, thinking it would be waiting for him for another semester. he calls his building and asks to get in before everyone comes back so he doesn’t have to see anyone and tell them about what happened. he leaves a note for his roommate explaining that he dropped out for ‘personal reasons.’ soda pretends not to notice the tears falling down darry’s cheeks while they drive back home.

he doesn’t really have anyone but the gang. his friends from high school are out of the picture, and his friends from college wouldn’t understand, at least not enough to really be of any help. he doesn’t really get to lean on his brothers because he’s too busy trying to keep them together. he just… really doesn’t get the support that he needs.

as for the little bros..

pony and soda are both out of school for a week after the accident, a few times one of them said they wanted to go to school to get out of the house but tbh darry wouldn’t let them out of his sight or get in a vehicle if it wasn’t with him. but when they finally do get back, their teachers don’t really give them much of a break aside from giving their condolences. i like to think some of their teachers let soda visit pony in some of his classes or turned a blind eye when one of them would fall asleep in class, but beyond that, they don’t get much leeway workload-wise.

the social transition is also pretty intense. i think this was much more of a ponyboy problem bc soda keeps his circle pretty tight, but it’s so easy to lose friends when something like that happens because people don’t know what to say to you and eventually just stop reaching out. all of a sudden, his only identification in school is his dead parents, and shockingly, he doesn’t want to talk about that. he wants to just carry on with his life bc he’s still a person despite what happened to them. quite honestly the only people who don’t treat pony and soda differently after the accident are the gang (and sandy prob but idk when they got together).

pony doesn’t have too hard of a time getting back into the swing of school and getting himself caught up, but he’s like a child genius anyways soo he’s fine. soda though, god bless this poor boy, the week that he missed is probably the reason he ended up dropping out :( he already had a hard enough time missing one day let alone a whole week, and he was so far behind in some of his classes that it felt like they were speaking a different language. the worst part is he tries SO hard, too. he asks his teachers for help but they don’t know how to get through to him, cut to darry trying so hard not to lose his damn mind at the kitchen table trying to get soda to understand his english homework.

Only uses the draw 4+ or draw 2+ cards on Kaveh unless someone used a reverse card

Gets skipped a lot by Cyno

Hates when he loses to Kaveh and Cyno

Uses the blank rule card on Kaveh the most and it’s always something complicated that makes Kaveh lose his shit

Loses his patience when Kaveh drops back to back skip cards or draw 2+ cards (karmas a bitch)

Played drunk Uno one time and it didn’t end well, it takes a lot for Alhaitham to get drunk so when he did get drunk you best believe the other three take advantage of him even if they’re drunk too

Drunk Alhaitham is more susceptible to manipulation from the others

They made Alhaitham believe he cheated and made him draw 25

He also did a bunch of questionable things that night that he doesn’t remember but the group has photos as blackmail

Him or Cyno always shuffles the deck because Tighnari and Kaveh CAN NOT be trusted

Only cheats when everyone is really drunk

When he cheats he only steals Kavehs cards or Cyno, but mainly Kaveh

Almost fist fought Kaveh for dropping back to back skip cards for every turn when he had one card left

The king of always slamming down draw 2+ cards

Draw 2+ cards feel more petty than draw 4+ cards which is why he loves them (totally not projecting lol)

He always has them, either at the start, middle, or end of the game

Alhaitham is always the victim of his draw 2+ cards

Physically cringes whenever he gets skipped

Has definitely had a psychical altercation with Tighnari over cheating allegations

Let’s be real, Kaveh is never beating the cheating allegations because he does cheat

They throw cards at each other before every argument (him and tighnari)

Has won UNO three times in a row and was accused of cheating by everyone (tbh this time he wasn’t sksks)

BRAGS whenever he wins, Cyno and Alhaitham roll their eyes while Tighnari verbally shit talks him

Complains whenever he gets skipped by Alhaitham ONLY

When he gets drunk, he either talks more than usual or falls asleep in the middle of the game

When he does fall asleep, Alhaitham or Tighnari would steal his cards despite Cyno’s objections

Quite literally hates the swap hands card, even more than the skip card

Kaveh is always ready to trash talk anyone who beats him

Hits Alhaitham whenever he is grabs a good card, it’s a little habit he has and Alhaitham doesn’t really mind it as long as it doesn’t hurt him

It’s hard to cheat in UNO but Tighnari always finds a way to do it

His victim is always Cyno, any skip, draw 4+ cards are always used on Cyno

Doesn’t use any of those cards on Kaveh, cheaters stick together 

Argues with Cyno over the dumbest shit, making Cyno want to just shove a bread roll down Tighnaris throat  

When Cyno accuses him of cheating, Tighnari gaslights him into thinking that he is the one cheating and toit works half the time, it makes Alhaitham and Kaveh giggle

Has gotten into a pyschial altercation with Kaveh (both were drunk) and ended up being kicked out of the tavern, they both blamed Alhaitham and Cyno (who stayed to finish their game)

His favorite card would definitely by the rule card, 

He creates the most OUTLANDISH rules for only Cyno to follow 

Hates getting skipped (and pouts whenever he does get skipped)

Tighnari keeps the UNO deck at his residence, so he can mark cards (cheater <3) 

Alhaitham targeted Tighnari one night and he lost eight times in a row, making the fox boy storm out the tavern 

Has a terrible poker face, right next to Kaveh 

Whenever he has the rule card, his ears twitch, and Cyno has to mentally prepare himself for another outlandish rule

Cyno figured out Tighnari’s marks on the card and he was banned from keeping the cards at his place

Almost got into a psychial altercation with Alhaitham one night over a draw 4+ card (yes they both were drunk)

Will never admit it but he likes when he gets skipped, it gives him time to strategize his next move

It’s a no brainer but he has never cheated ever, even though he HAS thought about it a lot but he never goes through with it

The cards are kept at his residence and removes all the marks on the cards

I am so sorry you had to wait 4 months for a new post! I am slacking so bad rn skssks. I think Keigo is very specific about arguments. I think his negotiation training serves him well, and he is very good at collecting and controlling himself. The only times he loses his cool tend to be in times of danger or around Dabi (which is again, danger and unpredictability).

Keigo can take an emotional beating when it comes to criticism, just nodding along with his head down and probably agreeing which is so fucking sad, given his job and childhood; but you should NOT do that because it's mean and he's a good boy and deserves kindness and to have his strengths uplifted even when you're mad at him.

Approach him in disagreements with tenderness and it'll warm his heart a little. He's not used to it. His parents never did that. The public doesn't do that. His job doesn't do that. He does that with others, despite that, because Keigo's character tugs at hearts and crushes them into little compact boxes like WALL-E.

When Keigo needs space, he tends to go for flights and perch on building tops. He's preferred high spaces since he was a kid to get away. I can see him going to cool off if he needs to— if him doing it without explaining first bothers you, he will be happy to correct this habit and clearly communicate that he is going and will be back.

I see a lot of "stonewalling" Keigo which is juicy to read and a great concept to explore, but I personally think because he loves honesty and speaking the unspoken, communication is important to him! Unless he has a specific reason to do so, of course, like your safety. He is very good at stonewalling, but absolutely despises doing it.

I think Keigo's penchant for communication means he's good at verbalizing exactly what bothers him— this tends to be in a snarky way at positions of authority, and surprisingly open around others at times; but in projects he cares about (you) I think he's meticulous.

Although, I'm back and forth wondering about his sarcasm being a point of issue in arguments. I also wonder how much he keeps inside. He tends to chew conflicts in his head alone.

Keigo does not want to do harm. He does enough of that at work.

I can see Keigo pressing his thumb into your emotional bruises like you said but only if it is specifically to drive you away for your own safety. And ohhhhh he digs deep enough to make sure it works.

He also will not text you first after an argument, he's busy and never checks his phone like ever, which can make arguments tend to drag. He will visit you though! He would like to get your fight fixed as quickly as possible, but sometimes duty calls. It's not a deliberate decision or anything, it's just how the cookie crumbles.

Keigo would benefit greatly from his S/O being a partner that communicates rather than him always having to "fix" things. Like, he'll do it, but he deserves better than to chase and doesn't really have the time, regardless.

If you want to communicate, god he's fucking ecstatic like yes please let's just say it. He hates lies. He doesn't like dancing around the point. He respects when you're honest with him and is bent on fixing things efficiently.

I think Keigo is complicated and this ask is making me want to read the manga and watch the show to study him like a hamster running in a wheel with my magnifying glass.

I’ve honestly just learned to ignore and block all of Jay’s haters atp because all they’re doing is just trying to get a reaction out of people, mostly DC editorial. They literally message, tag, make essays and do all kinds of shit nonstop just so they can “persuade” the writers at DC to give them what they want, it’s like watching toddlers pulling a tantrum tbh.

If DC editorial cared even a little bit about what these people want or think they would’ve done something about it by now imho. But they probably see how disgusting, evil, and malicious the hate is that they refuse to give them what they want especially for a character who isn’t even a bad person. No one’s hurting them or stopping them from liking the things they like either so their hate really is unfounded.

It’s pretty sad especially for LGBT+ Asians to see so many people have such a vicious and scathing reaction to him simply existing but when people are that mindlessly hateful there’s really not much else you can do but ignore them, and I firmly believe is what DC editorial has chosen to do. I’m just glad Jay is still even present and being mentioned by name in the stories and I really hope they keep him.

Also people don’t realize Jon’s content is very scarce since he’s usually overshadowed by Clark just like how Bruce’s content overshadows his kids, so I hope DC will try to pump out a little more content for him.

I;m usually pretty good about blocking people, like my block list is super duper long and like in my head, I know half of this is just to get a rise out of Jay fans, but sometimes monkey-brain react. But yeah I totally get you.

DC is terrible at handling POC characters and if they didn't want Jay around, he'd be gone. But he's only becoming more prominent as the years pass and he's even part of an event now (a thing I thought won't happen for another 10 years). Like you have no idea, how much I was shaking, when I saw Jon asking for Jay right after coughing up blood and being brainwashed, and also saying "The Truth" is what's important to BQ. It feels especially significant to Jay because we got spoilers from the Nicole & Sina stream that Jay is very present in Absolute Power: Super Son, when Jon was fighting against the mind control. At least with Jon, it's a bit of a reference to Jay too, thematically.

On an objective level, I know Jay is here to stay. A lot of characters who were introduced around the same time as him, or even later than him have just kinda disappeared. But I am glad DC themselves have clearly chosen to ignore the haters regardless of the spam and the hate.

I think these days, there's people turning against the de-age Jon stans(especially on twitter and a lot on tiktok) primarily because they are.......the way they are......General comic fans who aren't particularly into Superfam are recognizing it. I think this is the best the atmosphere has ever been in terms of support and love for Jay and Jon.

And you're so right on Jon's content being scarcer. Other than Batman and Superman, no other character gets consistent books or a guaranteed, continuous run. The others who do have been around for decades, like Poison Ivy, Harley, Nightwing, etc. Even Wonder Woman doesn't have her Sensation Comics. In terms of a bigger picture, for how recent Jon is, he's doing pretty fantastic. He's always in events, he's got two independent runs, he's getting a new solo issue with AP: Super Son. I think we've been getting at least one solo Jon project a year since SOKE.

Relatively speaking, he's fine. And I think people also tend to assume he's being too overshadowed by Clark because the de-agers just dismiss any run where Jon shows up these days, unless it fits their perception of what he is now.

Like I had this argument with someone twitter, where they said you can't count Beast World, Lazarus Planet, Nightwing, Action Comics, and DC Pride appearances as Jon content because they aren't solo books. Which is frankly absurd. This also involves a lot of Jay mentions and appearances.

Jay, Nika and Nia are the only characters who were introduced around that 2021-2022 time that are still relevant, and they continue to grow. I think outside of Tom King, everyone else have also started to realize the Damian-Jon friendship just can't be taken back to the way it was so they're each getting stories very separate from one another. Even Jon's stories and themes are getting more divorced from Clark.

tbh now that i've finished watching stars, i think people very much lie to themselves about how much seiya "disrespected" usagi's boundaries & "ignored her feelings"—because they don't like how it makes them feel to recognize that usagi wasn't forced into anything against her will. 

i kept waiting for seiya to be this pushy, abusive person, and make endless unwanted advances toward usagi. however, 99% of the time seiya was simply flirting & usagi was... not only wholeheartedly receptive to it, but actively flirting back. aside from random oneliners where usagi is like "huh i don't get it? 😳" (which always struck me as very dissonant, because usagi seems to be aware of seiya’s feelings depending on the episode so it’s weird when she conveniently forgets as a punchline LMAOOO but anyways)—seiya and usagi both seem incredibly aware of the romantic tension between them, and they still choose to flirt back and forth with each other. it's not seiya strong-arming usagi into these situations she's uncomfortable in, it just makes people feel better to over-exaggerate seiya as this manipulative person & ignore usagi's total agency in the whole situation.

and tbh the longer i think about it, i'm really bothered by this implication that it was seiya's responsibility to idk... not "tempt" usagi to stray from her boyfriend, as opposed to acknowledging that usagi made her own choices & wasn't unknowingly coerced by a "predatory" lesbian LMFAO. as an aside that comes back to my main argument— something i really love about seiusa as a ship is i don't think either of them fully realize how deeply they feel about each other until pretty far in. usagi obviously wrestles with being attracted to seiya & feeling like she shouldn't be up until the last episode, but seiya also doesn't seem to realize he's in love with usagi, beyond flirting with her & hanging out, until they find kakyuu & seiya realizes he still can't stop thinking about usagi. as much as usagi is confused about her feelings, seiya also has multiple moments where he thinks “what's the matter with me?” and struggles to understand how deep his initially more casual feelings for usagi have gotten.

imo, people just ignore this & use it to interpret everything seiya does as inherently predatory from their first interactions. however, often times in their early scenes, it's usagi who is assuming seiya is making moves on her & subsequently freaking out about it (she also spends a LOT of time thinking about him making a move—like, to the point where it’s clear she isn’t just panicking about it but is actively kind of waiting for it to happen—but that's another conversation LOL). but then in reality, seiya is. not doing anything. it’s just usagi projecting this overtly forward intent on his objectively not-super-provocative actions (which imo further drives home the point of, if usagi is so very much not interested in seiya, then how come she thinks constantly about him making a move..... and what does that tell us about her attraction/potential feelings for him.... but again, a different conversation).

for me, the date episode & the sleepover episode comes to mind. like, seiya invites usagi to go out, & usagi chooses to go. seiya offers to stay over when usagi is home alone, & she gets super excited & says yes (and immediately invites him up to her room skdlhfsdkhfls anyways). and people would argue, seiya knew she had a boyfriend, therefore he shouldn't have made these invitations or offered in the first place.... as though usagi isn't capable of making her own choices & turning down a friend if she was so uncomfortable with the way he was treating her. 

i think the problem is that people just find it easier to blame seiya & act like he was this manipulative lesbian preying on a vulnerable girl with a boyfriend vs grapple with how usagi had control of her own actions and had the agency to do things that make fans uncomfortable. these boundaries that people always are so mad about seiya not respecting were only “not respected” because... as time went on, they just did not exist, and that simply falls on both of them, not just seiya. for the few times that usagi would remind seiya she already had a boyfriend, she still tears those boundaries down on her own—by developing really intense feelings for seiya, by choosing to spend time with him again and again, by not turning him down from the start (which she could've done if she was truly uninterested and uncomfortable, like so many people decided she is). 

tl;dr it’s not that deep, but i'm just baffled by these “seiya is an abuser & creep” allegations that have been thrown around for decades—when usagi has such obvious feelings for him & it went both ways. because of their preconceived notions of usagi's feelings & actions, people have built up this self-fulfilling idea of seiya as this manipulative abuser who takes advantage of the poor fragile girl, but that’s just blatantly ignoring the complexity of literally everything that happened onscreen. it also robs usagi of the agency she has in all of her choices and her relationships, including with seiya. usagi wasn't naive or unaware or coerced, you just don't like how she felt and what she did. like yeah it's easier to scapegoat seiya as the predatory butch lesbian who’s being creepy to the pure pretty girl, but in reality usagi pretty clearly fell in love with or at the very least developed more-than-platonic feelings for someone else & it's messy! sorry i have eyes.

Tbh I’ve seen you and other anons discuss this before and in regard to the Van Scene™ and whether Mike thinks the words were coming from Will, I have some thoughts

I personally think he does suspect or even believe that it was coming from Will, but that he isn’t sure if he’s reading into it being a romantic expression or a platonic one. I could see him being doubtful about that and gaslighting himself into believing that he’s projecting, that Will’s a nice guy he’s just being really nice and sweet and thoughtful, he doesn’t like him like that.

But I do personally consider the Van Scene™ to be Mike’s, “Oh. Oh.” scene where everything he’d been feeling for so long finally clicked in his mind and he realized that he has feelings for Will.

And in regard to the “I love you,” I think it’s a mixture of a few things: I think Will’s encouragement crushed Mike’s hope that maybe it was romantic on Will’s part. But I also think that Will’s encouragement made Mike feel like it was his duty as the Heart to tell Eleven that he loved her. He knew that Eleven wanted him to tell her he loves her romantically (she wants him to mean it, though) and so in that moment I think Mike felt that it was his duty and his role to do what he, in that moment, thought was best for Eleven and would give her strength and peace of mind….even though it didn’t.

Especially since a lot of what defines a paladin is devoutness, oaths, commitment, devotion—I think Mike felt and believed during that scene that he needed to fulfill his role as the paladin, the Heart.

So in season 5, I think Mike will be aware of his feelings for Will but in a place where he thinks Will doesn’t like him back, because either he thinks he read into the Van Scene™ even if he does believe that the words were from Will, or he thinks he was wrong in his initial gut-instinct and it wasn’t actually Will’s words.

Also since we know there’s a time jump I need to see Will’s painting on Mike’s wall!

I completely agree with you about Mike being unsure that Will meant it romantically, because he could easily gaslight himself into questioning if he read it wrong.

Because when we think about it, Mike is the one that has made their last argument into something romantically coded, not Will. Will didn't ask Mike what they were or make any possible accusation about them, but Mike turned into it the moment he said "we are friends. We are friends" with different intonations each time. Almost like he was trying to remind himself of it, so it's not a stretch for us to believe that might believe Will meant it platonically instead of romantically.

Honestly, I think every interpretation of the van scene is plausible, yours included, although I personally feel like he already had an inkling about his feelings you could be right about that being the moment where it clicks for him and he finally is able to name what he feels.

Regarding the I Love You scene. I agree with you wholeheartedly and I'd also like to add, that while I'm not denying that Mike clearly cares about El and loves her in some way, I do feel he said out of guilt as well, not only because he couldn't say it first, but because of everything that has happened to her that he might feel responsible for.

I feel like he feels he owes El after everything she's done for them, after she got Will back. So yes, add this to his sense of responsibility and duty and we have a recipe for that speech. He says it because he feels he has to, because it's his responsibility.

And surprise surprise, I also agree with Mike knowing he's in love with Will but being unsure Will loves him back and okg yew! Mike putting with all of the other drawings Will's made is definitely something he'll do.

yharnam archaeology??? 👀👀👀

hi I forgot that the blog I was rbing that from was a blog I followed for bloodborne stuff LMAO

okay so. this is heavily inspired by

Me being an anthropology student (who got into it because Cynthia pokemon is an archaeologist and I adore her, I took one (1) class and then got really invested, the important thing is. Archaeology go brr)

Me taking a very interesting class this semester that focuses on paleopathology, which is as my professor put it "the study of ancient suffering" but realistically is figuring out whatever you can from human remains. Whereas archaeology as a whole is about human culture from material remains, which can be actual bodies but can also be other things like pottery and building foundations.

Me teetering on the brink of being way too into Bloodborne for my own good despite not normally being much of a horror fan or a fan of particularly grimdark things. I Don't Know What's Different About Bloodborne. (it's probably that I'm a lesbian and I like lady maria, sue me)

Anyway. I got to thinking one time after class. That archaeologists would be SO FUCKING CONFUSED BY YHARNAM.

I'm tentatively placing Bloodborne as somewhere in the nineteenth century based on general vibes (according to my dad and his deep passion for weaponry of all kinds, a lot of the things in the game would have been derived later, but tbh if I lived in a place that constantly had to deal with people turning into horrifying beasts I think I'd innovate the hell out of things to get better weaponry so I didn't die too) and this theoretical au would be set in the modern day. so it's been a Hot Minute since the game ended and I think I was considering Yharnam Sunrise as the ending for. Reasons.

There's this group of researchers who end up heading to Yharnam, bankrolled by some rich heir or something who's got more money than sense (he dies or possibly turns into a beast from stupidity very early on) and possibly they're the last in a bunch of groups who went there and died because even hundreds of years after the horrors there are still So Many Ways For It To Go Badly? Undecided on that front, I'm still trying to figure out what (if anything) would actually be preserved.

Highlights of my vague plans:

The team finds Gilbert's journal. They all get really attached to Gilbert because that just kind of tends to happen. Which is unfortunate because they know damn well he probably didn't survive very long after the last page in his diary, but they didn't find a body, so...?

It takes a while for them to realize that the very canine skeletons have human DNA. At which point everyone is just. Very fucking confused. And also are realizing that maybe all those writings about the beast plague weren't actually about rabies (which does not leave a trace on the skeleton, fun fact! I wanted to do my project on rabies but I had to pick a pathology that had an effect on the skeleton. Alas)

There are so many arguments over who that grave behind the Hunter's Workshop belongs to. SO MANY. (I personally think it's very likely that is Maria's, but the team won't have any way of knowing that! If the headstone is unreadable by game times it's not gonna be any more readable centuries later!)

You determine whether something is bone by licking it. Someone finds an Amygdala skull and somehow, through the sort of stupidity that only happens in horror movies before people realize they're in horror movies, someone gets dared to lick it. This results in a very horrified Insight increase and the revelation that the weird fucking thing is made of bone. Also, that Amygdala's ghost is interested in the team now. Oops. This probably will go fine, right...?

What the FUCK are they going to think of all the statues of Great Ones. Probably (reasonably) that they are statues portraying something with great cultural significance to Yharnam, and possibly religious significance. Less reasonable is the fact that Great Ones... actually exist... and that SOMEONE is going to get enough Insight by the end to see those Amygdalas. Possibly the whole team tbh.

There is going to be so much arguing over how the fuck to cite shit. How do you cite some guy who supposedly disappeared centuries ago and is still hanging around in another dimension that you honestly aren't sure how to leave But You'll Worry About That Later, The First Hunter Is A Primary Source!!! How do you cite a ghost. How do you cite hallucinations and visions.

Possibly the Doll sneaks onto the team by pretending to be a survivor of a previous expedition, because tbh I think the Moon Presence can do what it wants and I think it would be VERY interested in these new bitches rocking up to Yharnam after a while. And, y'know, that goes fine until someone finds a picture of her. Or of Lady Maria. Every. Single. Member. Of the team. Has some connection to Yharnam. Almost none of them know this originally. They will find out. Rip to Rom the Vacuous Spider's great-great-grandniece who discovers the hard way (finding Byrgenwerth's paperwork) why she was the first in her family to graduate uni, just not the first to attend it.

(Notable exception to this rule is the person who is convinced that his great-great-great-probably a few more in there-grandmother is Lady Maria. This gets very funny when the descendant of the player Hunter trips into the Hunter's Nightmare, which still exists due to said player Hunter poking their head in and wisely dipping immediately, and who manages to prevent a bossfight by blurting out "oh shit you're Jerry's great-grandma!")

(There may be lesbianisms involved. And some light necromancy. Idk I like Lady Maria a lot and I got enabled too damn much and I think it would be very funny for the group to return to civilization with an extra person. Or two.)

In summary, I have no plot (yet) apart from archaeology and being way too invested in the game, but I really want to write this someday once I actually finish said game. And also I'm having a grand old time coming up with characters to put through the Horrors. The archaeologist is named Cynthia Parker and. Well. If you remember the superhero identity of a certain character called Peter Parker, you might be able to figure out who she's distantly related to.

Other ideas include: player Hunter descendant, someone very distantly descended from a Cainhurst exile, and Jerry who is 100% certain his great-several-times-great-grandmother is Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower and is 100% wrong about that. Jerry is the single party member with no actual connection to Yharnam and we love him for it.
