July 19th, 1999- RAW IS WAR

The night was almost over. After a very entertaining show, Triple H and The Undertaker were to end it, each with a partner, Chyna and Vince, watching at ring side. Everything was going HHH’s way, as it usually does with ringside friends, and he had managed to get the dead man in a pin. The referee slid next to them in the mat, hands meeting the ground.

“ONE, TWO-“ No three is heard, as lights go out with a boom and the crowd mumbles in confusion. The jumbotron flickers on, first a bright white against the rest of the black stadium before flashing back to black, unreadable font printing onto the screen as static blanketed over the stadium and a faint voice making its way under it. Through the uneasy, unintelligible whispers and Lawler's screeching, the ring floor rattled and pounded. The noise stopped, along with the voice before the words were finally clear.

“And they can, they can say we’re crazy, and we can say, well you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Silence rung once more, the crowd stunned into silence by their confusion, before the lights were on once again on. A collective shock ran through the building as their attention went back to the ring- Chyna let out a yelp and rushed through the ropes, where The Game lay bloodied on the mat with no remnants of whoever it was besides a sledgehammer- much similar to one he had used months prior on The Rock. The sledgehammer that won him his match, and ended the fued with the other man.

AUGUST 26TH, 1999- THURSDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN

The crowd roared with life, anticipation building within every single fan like it did every night. Road Dogg and Chris Jericho, two men beloved by many in the crowds, continued their conflict, the crowd bringing the level of excitement and encouragement to the superstars they always do. As the match continued to build, and tension rose, Road Dogg managed to get Y2J in a submission hold after grabbing a hold of his ankle. Just as Jericho's hand went to tap against the floor, the lights went out.

Once again, the Jumbotron flickered bright white before the color drained and reappeared in the blurry word, the eerie noise returning, and forcing its way into everyone’s ears. As the ringside announcers reminisced on the last time they saw the bright, white letters on the jumbotron, JR recalled that last time, the words were a bit blurrier, and now they seemed to be moving.

In the midst of the darkness, stuck in fear and shock, the arena sat in horror as they listened to one of the wrestlers struggle against the unknown attacker. It sounded rougher than last time, as if they had become more bloodthirsty.

No clear words rang through the air, only demented whispers followed by airy breath and sometimes a frightening laugh. The attacked wrestlers - still, no one knew which one- cries of anguish turned quiet and it was assumed the aggressor had finally stopped. But the lights still refused to turn on, and everyone watched as the blurry words morphed clear.

KARMA, it read.

Seconds later, it was once again gone, and the lights flashed on, its brightness burning, eyes watering and squinting, trying to look for the assailant and assailed. Chris Jericho is stumbling away from the scene with a look of fear at the image of the Road Dogg lying on the mat, much a like to the former incident, yet this time, a thin rope laid next to him instead of a sledgehammer, the same rope that had been used to lock Mick Foley and Chainsaw Charlie in the dumpster a year prior. The same rope that won the match for Road Dogg and his tag-team parter.

SEPTEMBER 6TH, 1999- RAW IS WAR

“Well, starting the night with an unexpected victory folks, the Rock & Sock tag team getting the upper hand over the Big Red Giant Kane, and his equally intimidating brother, The Undertaker!” JR tells the fans, catching up those just now turning the program on.

“Oh, it was nothing but luck! I sure do hope this luck continues tonight, we’ve got Jeff Jarrett vs. Jaqueline next, and boy, I sure hope she doesn’t face the same hope as all those other women have- oh, wait a minute, what's this?” Lawler’s gross intentions were put to an end as the stadium went dark, the jumbotron flashing white then black then black before painting a jerky picture of backstage. What seemed to be a live broadcasting camera drops from black gloved hands and onto the ground next to the silhouette of s groaning mans-Jeff Jarrett, laying bloodied on the floor. Yelling from somehwere far backstage echoes through the hall with panicked, running footsteps while an acoustic guitar, held by the thinly gloved hands makes it way into the frame. For a second, they just loom over the man before the guitar is lifted, revealing their big black boots and the bottom of their long black coat, before its brought back down on the moaning man. The yelling down the hall becomes louder, and the person steps forward, raising their shiny, black boot and giving the camera a death-delivering stomp.

“What the hell was that?” King spoke as the lights turned back on and the screen turned off. Though this person in blacks actions were confusing as to why, the what was clear. The world had been speaking of Jeff Jarrett and his disgraceful use of the acoustic guitar to the two famous legends in womens wrestling, the Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young.

“I think your dreams have come true King, with the way Jarrett sounded, and hell, looked, it sure seems like he won’t be performing anytime soon. I’m quite sure this is another famous attack, from who we’ve learned goes by Karma, and if that is true I’m sure he was put in a figure four lock to go with that guitar besides him.” The world spoke of his torture to the poor women as well, putting them in one of the most famous submissions to exist.

SEPTEMBER 26TH, 1999- BACKLASH, E&C VS. THE MINISTRY OF DARKNESS

“We welcome you, to the sold-out Providence Civics Center, we welcome you, to Backlash! Hi everybody, I’m Jim Ross alongside the King, Jerry Lawler, and ladies and gentlemen, Shane Mcmahon dropped a bomb on Sunday Night Heat, the Stone Cold-Rock matchup for the WWF title will be no-holds-barred, King!” At Lawlers appreciation, JR continues. “And if Stone Cold lays his hands on referee Shane McMahon, Austin will be disqualified and lose the WWF title.”

“That’s the way it should be, I am so sick and tired of everything going Stone Cold Austin’s way. Well, tonight Stone Cold, if you’re worthy of being a champion you gotta big job in front of you, pal.” Lawler continued his hateful ramble as the two teams came out, the lights darkening with The Ministry's entrance after a very nervous looking Edge & Christian.

Both teams showed great strength in the ring, with a countless amount of flawless moves as the match progressed, and though The Ministry seemed to have an great amount of intensity, the other team of ‘The Brood’ was able to get an upper hand with a quick chair shot to Mideon thanks to the distracted referee. It didn’t seem as good of a choice as they thought it would be when Bradshaw looked them in the eyes from across the ring, shaking his head with a fearful look.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

Edge and Christian simply laughed it off, believing the man was trying to threaten them. And then the music hit. But this time the lights didn’t go out.

“I think we’re due for another visit, JR! Or maybe they're playing tricks or something, these lights are all still on.” King commented the obvious for the people at home, and as he finished his sentence it was made clear there was no trick.

First the black boots step out in powerful strides, the long coat following behind. With black and white face paint covering the top half of their face, no pupils visible in their eyes, they made their way to the ring, chair in hand. Karma.

“My God, I don't think this is any kind of trick, King, I think this is who’s been attacking all of these men! By the looks of it, I think this Karma person is…affiliated with The Ministry of Darkness.” JR continued as he watched E&C escape from the consequences of their actions and run into the crowd, leaving an angry Karma with The Ministry, who seems to pause for a moment.

They fit right into the group, all black clothes and a killer glare, deadly enough to put you into the ground or make you run the other way. They fit right in until they swung around and hit Mideon with the chair meant for Edge and Christian as Bradshaw begins to back up the ramp. In all of his years in this company, he’d never felt the chill that the backstage had held the past months. Never had he seen so many grown man afraid, so many cheaters unwilling to cheat.

“Well, I don’t think they're running with The Ministry.” King summed up, earning a sarcastic comment in response from JR. All comments turned into silence when the only standing wrestler turned to them, death stare stinging into their faces as they began to stalk over to the table. Grabbing the microphone from where the ring announcer had left it, they spoke.

“I do not stand for any groups, nor any single man here. I do not stand besides anything besides whats been written already, what I have to fix.” They looked into the camera as they continued to speak. “Your actions will have consequences and I will be them. Do what you wish, but know, I will be watching. Listening. I will rip you piece to piece if that’s what it takes, and I will not stop until she has told me to. I will not stop until fate comes for you- until Karma has her way.”

They let the microphone tumble from their hands, still staring down at the camera. Seconds later, their white eyes grow wide and they face up to the ceiling. The lights go off one final time, and Karma is gone with them.

With today's entry, I was rather surprised and confused that Johnathan seemed to turn around so quickly from the absolute pit of despair he was in yesterday, having newfound determination and energy when he's seemingly been completely hopeless and inactive for weeks now (and for good reason). Not that I ever thought he'd completely given up, but there's definitely been a slow decline in how descriptive his journal entries have been to reflect his declining mental state (more robotic, less of his actual feelings about things), and today was a sharp contrast; it feels more like the early entries again. I thought, well, his mind is probably just so cracked at this point that he's looped all the way back around to being bold and energetic again, because by now he's desperate enough to throw caution to the wind: he either succeeds doing something extremely reckless to escape, or he fails and meets his end in a far better way than if he just waits for his fate by Dracula's hands.

...But having thought about it and reading other posts, I realized (probably stupidly obvious as it is) that his sudden change in mood probably has to do with what happened to the baby. Despite how scared he's been all this time, yesterday he didn't hesitate for a single second to try to save the baby once he realized from the previous incident what was happening, not thinking about his own life at all. And then he despaired when he couldn't save the child, the first time he's mentioned crying in the book at all, and then he had to witness the mother blaming him for her baby's death, and being killed herself for trying to rescue it. Now, the day after that horrific and heartbreaking failure, he's suddenly more determined than he's been in ages to escape. Maybe that was a turning point for Johnathan, and lit a fire under him... maybe he's clinging to the need to escape not just for himself and the people he loves anymore, but for the vain hope that he can put a stop to Dracula's schemes somehow once he gets out, because he doesn't want to let any more children die :' )

Crystal Week Day 1: Past | Regrets

When the client phased through the door, Crystal felt her stomach drop. She wondered how fast could someone suddenly throw up.

The ghost stopped before saying anything, staring directly at her. Edwin and Charles exchanged concerned looks.

"Is there something we can do for you, mate?"

The boy, probably around their age, had been wearing a blank expression up until now. He turned and spoke with a freezing voice: "No. I just found out what I needed to know".

He looked at Crystal again, but this time he seemed sad, angry and disgusted at the same time. Crystal didn't speak, eyes wide, completely frozen by the side of the desk.

The ghost vanished as quickly as he appeared. Crystal allowed herself to breathe, and realized in that moment that she was crying.

Charles did, too. He approached her and offered a hug, which she took while her crying got worse, and worse, and worse.

She wasn't sure how much time passed. Charles was the only thing grounding her and stopping whatever this was from becoming a full blown panick attack. He was whispering something into her hair, she couldn't actually pay attention, but it was soothing.

Finally, she saw herself on the sofa, Charles still by her side, and Edwin watching intently from behind the desk.

"I'm sorry", she said, and maybe this was the first or fifth time she was saying it. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know, he shouldn't have died-"

"It's okay", Charles replied, also not for the first time. "It's okay".

It wasn't. She looked over at Edwin, someone who was dead because of people who didn't know what they were doing, and she cried harder. It wasn't okay.

But she supposed it would have to be, one day.

i was just gonna leave this as a comment, but my response started spiraling sooooo. guess i'm makin' this a full on post lol =3=" uhh anyways, responding to @skyborneveggie's tags on this post:

#really good analysis #always here for high-functioning depression light takes #i want to add; while Light is better at reading & manipulating people in the moment he also tends to overlook some things in the long run #because of his superiority complex #like his father volunteering for the eyes in matsuda's place #and matsuda in the ending. As much as i like to think of matsuda as wholesome- #-i do think if light played his cards right he could have manipulated him over to kira's side #but he didn't because he didn't think matsuda was important in the grand scheme of things

very good points!! about matsuda in particular— it’s interesting in retrospect how consistently he’s set up as a side character, particularly with how he is almost always immediately pushed off to the side despite that. like, alongside soichiro, he’s really the first member of the JTF we see pre-lind l. tailor (in the anime, anyway. in the manga it’s a bit more ambiguous, though matsuda definitely shows up to mention KIRA bringing the crime rate down in ch.3, still quite early).

he’s always the one counterpoint within the group, playing devil's advocate in a way with how he brings up the pro-KIRA side of things, yet as you say light underestimates him So consistently that he even ends up evolving into a full on joke/shakespearean fool character by yotsuba, which is really what makes his actions in the end so incredibly significant.

i distinctly remember reading that section where aizawa & mogi are getting more deeply involved with near and, in the case of aizawa in particular, are starting to genuinely consider the possibility that light might be KIRA, and just getting sooooooo so SO goddamn suspicious of what matsuda was doing. this was in part because i already had some spoilers about the ending, specifically about matsuda shooting him, but goddamn do his actions start looking suspicious when you begin taking him seriously as a threat. like, while aizawa is starting to live through his own psychological horror novel come to life, realizing that the innocent kid & strong leader he's been taking care of & following all this time might actually have been the fucking serial murderer they've been after for literal Years, here's what matsuda is up to in the background:

(this one is particularly notable to me as it shows that even aizawa underestimates him— it's not just light, it's the whole damn team. even ryuk joined in earlier.)

(and of course, my absolute favorite example. the contrast between their expressions alone here is absolutely golden all on its own, but matsuda's heartfelt "don't worry, light!! i'll never betray you!!!" in comparison to THIS only makes it all the more juicy:

like, light doesn't even bother responding to him until he's got a goddamn bullet in his hand. he just sits there confident in the expectation that matsuda will lick his soles like a dog. jesus fucking christ.)

anyways, as i was saying: he's mostly just doing a bunch of dumb shit, making silly jokes in the background, fucking around with ryuk and being written off as an idiot by most characters, especially light but again also aizawa and ryuk. AND YET. he is Always hanging around over light's shoulder, lurking somewhere behind him in almost ever panel he shows up in, perfectly innocent to the point where it's can almost be more off-putting than if he were outwardly, actively questionable. like, this panel in particular, and i mean goddamn, just look at it again:

it hits So Hard in retrospect, not just because matusda is the one to shoot light in the end, possibly being his cause of death had ryuk not stepped in when he did, but also because it's true. as incredibly fucking suspicious as this panel may seem if you are armed with the knowledge that matsuda does, eventually, end up being the one to shoot light, it's equally easy to write it off as normal dumbass matsuda behavior because that is Exactly What It Is. and you would be right!! matsuda is trusting of light to a fault— when he eventually breaks, it is Not due to his own betrayal. it's the evidence of light's. and not just of his manipulation of the task force, for years and years and years on end— it's soichiro's death specifically that finally makes matsuda lose his faith in him.

the idea that light could've manipulated matsuda over to KIRA's side had he just tried a little harder is fascinating, but i think i can also understand why he didn't exert any more effort— it was kinda unnecessary. for basically the entire story, from the moment matsuda is formally introduced, to the minute light breaks and admits he's actually KIRA, matsuda is one particularly dedicated conversation away from being a full-on KIRA supporter— or so light believes, anyway. and he's probably not that far off.

really, i'm of the opinion that it's matsuda's existence as this KIRA-sympathetic figure in the task force in the first place that causes light to believe so strongly that he could eventually convert the entire JTF over to the side of KIRA— possibly even saving all of them their lives in the process. like, as i've said before, for all that light monologues about how he's Definitely Going To Kill The Task Force, Don't Worry, I Can And Will Do It When I Have To, he. never actually does it. instead, light goes through all the trouble of keeping the JTF strung along behind him for more than half a decade following L's death, holding on to all of these strings of his former life even when they are almost undoubtedly more of a pain than they're worth. unable to kill his father, unable to kill misa, unable to kill matsuda— even when he directly tries to.

i forget which post this was on, but i believe someone pointed out before that potentially a major part of light's grief following soichiro's death comes from the fact that he springs a shock on him at the last minute before passing: soichiro never stopped suspecting his son. when he sees light's lifespan above his head his first thought is to be relieved, because the question he's held at the back of his mind for Years has finally been undoubtedly assuaged. light is desperate to believe up until the end that he can make the world truly and genuinely pro-KIRA; his final actions in the moments of clarity before he starts begging at ryuk's feet for his life involve an enthusiastic speech as he makes one final bid at converting the JTF and SPK to join him and believe in his vision of Justice.

and yet. he never quite gets mastuda.

never bothered? or never could? perhaps a bit of both, but it's a fascinating character progression nonetheless, and easily one of the most interesting arcs in the series. poor, poor mastuda, indeed.

sidenote: this is a somewhat half baked thought, but i can't help but make a somewhat minor connection between light's treatment of matsuda and his treatment of misa, as well as his relationship with takada. like, let's think through the list of his main (human) supporters throughout the series, the ones who end up taking on the title of KIRA themselves: in the first half, misa, in the second, takada & mikami. if we add matsuda to this list, we get two mirroring pairs: misa & matsuda for the front half of the series, takada & mikami for the latter.

light's treatment of each of these pairs is quite different, despite the fact that they all essentially fulfill the same purpose to him: misa & mikami act as KIRA's eyes, killing those light is unable/unwilling to himself, while takada & matsuda fill the role of KIRA's spokesperson, albeit to very different audiences. thus each half of each pair executes a different side of KIRA's ideology: misa & mikami the practical side, becoming killers themselves, and takada & matsuda the persuasive side, pointing out the positive influences KIRA's actions have had on the population to The People and the rest of the task force respectively.

it's not quite as simple as i've laid out here, of course— tadaka eventually ends up killing before she dies at light's hand herself, misa lives as light's partner until she loses her memories and never quite recovers, mikami becomes quite static, just playing at a killer for Appearances, until his actions eventually end up accidentally betraying light and leading to his downfall. yet it still seems notable to me that despite light treating takada & mikami noticeably better for the majority of the time that he's working with them, those two are the ones who eventually end up dead, betrayed and betrayer respectively. yet, in the case of misa & matsuda... for all that light degrades them and treats them like shit, those two are the ones that get to live on past him while remaining stubbornly loyal until the end, until light's own actions twist back and smack him in the head.

i think perhaps part of the reason why light never ends up converting matsuda is not just his own ego blowing Shit outta proportion and assuming that matsuda will either very easily convert/is too much of a dumb liability to even bother with, but also light's own discomfort with having followers at all. like, it really takes him that full time skip to get fully on board with the idea that people will Submit to KIRA, despite the fact that he logically must know how necessary that is. light wants the recognition and love and commitment of other people, but he doesn't necessarily want the responsibility of their own stupid actions— a sentiment perhaps reflected in how easily he kills criminals, seeing their "evil" as something to be Purged, an annoyance just as much as a liability for the happiness of the Good, Pure People of the world.

as i've outlined before, misa is the main person who's enthusiastic submission consistently gets on light's nerves and icks him the fuck out, but i can't help but wonder if this same reaction applies at least in part to his distaste of matsuda. it's easier to get away from matsuda at least, considering he doesn't have to play the Good, Heterosexual Boyfriend around him, but that doesn't mean it isn't still somewhat present either. this also gets interesting if you start considering lawlight dynamics during yotsuba as well, and L's similar (if somewhat more overt, even) dislike of matsuda during that era BUT. that'll perhaps have to wait until another essay lolol =3=

kinda wild to me that one of the most compelling aspects of both Chuuya and Kunikida's characters to me, that I never really see talked about, is how they're heavily set on a doomed crash course towards complete and utter destruction, and how I am so, so worried for them both.....
