National Examiner, April 12
You can buy a copy of this issue for your very own at my eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/bradentonbooks
Cover: Mark Harmon quitting NCIS
Page 2: Stars Who Rock Around the Clock -- they believe in the healing power of crystals -- Naomi Campbell, Shirley MacLaine, Adele, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Uma Thurman
Page 3: Debra Messing, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, Megan Fox, Katy Perry, Gisele Bundchen
Page 4: Eddie Murphy's roles and costumes
Page 6: George Clooney is turning 60 in May, and he says being an older dad to toddlers has its benefits -- his son isn't ever going to feel competitive with him and he'll be gumming his bread by the time he'd feel competitive with him, jokes the Oscar-winning actor, whose twins Ella and Alexander turn 4 in June -- George is well aware that growing up with two highly accomplished parents (his wife Amal Clooney is a successful human rights lawyer) can put a lot of pressure on a kid and that's why the couple is already guiding Ella and Alexander with strong values and kind hearts because George says it's their job to make sure that they care about people and that they challenge people in power and look out for people who don't have power and those are the things he was raised with -- the known prankster is also passing the practical joke tradition down to the next generation and he taught Alexander to take a piece of banana, chew it up and then spit it into a napkin, then stand next to him mom, pretend to blow his nose into it and look down until Mama looks at it, then eat it
Page 7: Partridge Family star Shirley Jones turned 87, and she's brimming over with gratitude for her wonderful life that's been chock-full of extraordinary experiences -- she says you have to have a good time and enjoy life to the fullest and before you know it you'll be 87 -- Shirley has three sons (her stepson David Cassidy died in 2017) and 13 grandchildren
Page 8: Take your etiquette test for tea with Queen Elizabeth
Page 9: Brain foods that may help prevent dementia
* Study says new drug slows Alzheimer's
Page 10: Jennifer Garner recently opened up about her real feelings on her body -- she's 48 and single and has three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck: daughters Violet and Seraphina and son Samuel -- in a recent interview, she admitted that her body has changed a lot since having three kids and she doesn't mind one little bit, even though she was hurt when a friend hinted she may be expecting again, saying there are some women whose bodies just, no matter how many babies they have, they bounce right back to that slim-hipped, no stomach and she has so many girlfriends who have that physique and she's so happy for them, but she's not one of them and she can work really hard and she can be really fit and she will still look like a woman who's had three babies and she always will
Page 11: 6 stomach symptoms you should never ignore -- catch problems before the become deadly
Page 12: After more than two decades, James Brolin says he's discovered the way to keep his marriage to Barbra Streisand going strong: negotiation -- it's taken two marriages and 22 years for him to figure it out and he and his wife have gotten so close being locked down together -- his mother was the sweetest person so he never really learned to negotiate with women but now he knows if you sit down and talk about a situation, you can work it out
Page 14: Dear Tony, America's Top Psychic Healer -- don't make snap judgments; you may lose the perfect mate -- Tony predicts a very hot summer coming and a lot more street crime
Page 15: Folks getting their COVID-19 vaccinations at the Berkshire Community College in Massachusetts got a shocking treat: a mini-concert from world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma -- while waiting out his 15-minute observation period, the musician sat down to play a socially distant symphony for his fellow inoculees
Page 16: Duchess Kate is never seen without a purse, but what exactly does she keep inside it? There's quite a history between royal women and their handbags: Princess Diana used her clutch bag to cover her cleavage from prying photographers, Queen Elizabeth moves her handbag from one arm to the other to signal to her staff when she's bored of chatting with someone, and Kate carries her bag in her left hand so she can keep her right hand free to greet and shake hands with guests and she holds her bag in front of her when shaking hands might be awkward -- according to royal protocol pre-pandemic, Kate must extend her hand first for another person to shake hands with her, so if she prefers to just smile instead of touching other folks, she uses her clutch to do that -- author Marcia Moody who wrote Kate: A Biography, says the duchess always carries four must-have items: in her small clutch, she carries a compact mirror, a handkerchief, blotting paper and lip balm and every now and then, if she's going to attend a tennis match, for example, Kate will carry a pair of sunglasses -- unlike Queen Elizabeth, whose purses come from a company called Launer, the duchess favors different brands, but mostly a company called Mulberry -- nowadays with three small children, the mom gravitates toward midsize bags with handles because she's got to take more items with her like a handy bunch of tissues, good for wiping little noses and faces, and also takes her camera along
Page 18: William Shatner confesses that when he starred in Star Trek during the mid-60s, he had no idea it would become a worldwide phenomenon still popular today -- Shatner, who turned 90 in March, says it's unimaginable and it's all beyond anybody's imagination or ability to repeat and the greatest thing about being the captain of the Enterprise for three years was his relationship with the cast and the roles were written so well
Page 19: Brandy is a one-in-a million cat because those are the odds she'd ever be found again after she went missing 15 years ago -- when Charles got the phone call from a California animal shelter that his missing pet has been found, he could scarcely believe his ears and the Los Angeles man was skeptical and thought it must be a mistake but he had made sure the two-month-old kitten had a microchip and sure enough, the malnourished stray they found was his Brandy -- Charles did break down and cry because he thought about all of the years he lost from her and when he picked her up, she started to purr and it was very emotional
Page 20: Mark Harmon finally lured wife Pam Dawber out of retirement to star alongside him on NCIS, but the pairing will be short-lived because he's leaving the show after 18 hit seasons -- the 69-year-old star is finally fed up with the backbreaking hours, endless rehearsals, and feuds with cast and crew, and plans to ride off into the sunset with Pam and retire to the couple's Montana Ranch -- Mark's contract is up after season 18, and he's agonized over whether to sign a new one and he's being offered the moon and the stars to come back for a few more seasons, but he says his heart just isn't in it and Mark has faced problems on the set over the past few years and he feels his age, he just doesn't need the aggravation anymore -- NCIS recently teased a possible departure of his character Leroy Gibbs when the special agent commander was suspended for assaulting and nearly killing a suspect but despite that, Harmon insists Gibbs not be killed off so he can leave the door open for a possible return
Page 22: Legendary actor Michael Caine just turned 88 and he's still going strong, starring in an upcoming comedy Best Sellers and says he knows he's old but he doesn't feel old, not in his head, where it matters
Page 24: They say money doesn't buy happiness, but what do people spend their money on that can buy happiness? You don't need millions of dollars to afford the things that happy people buy to stay that way and studies show that anything over $75,000 a year in income is gravy, which means yachts, jewels, second homes and art collections are not at all required -- the best thing to drop your cash on is experiences and doing is better than having and in other words, an object you own will never give you the consistent pleasure of an experience that creates good memories that live on forever -- also the best experiences are the ones that involve other people like having a picnic with family, going rafting with pals, or even just walking and talking with an exercise buddy
Page 25: Freshen Your Fridge -- make a clean start with this 5-step plan
Page 26: Tony's Mystic World -- may the force be with you -- the life force can be drained out of you by fear or worry
Page 28: Sensational Snaps From Around the World -- photo contest captures amazing sights
Page 31: When to trash it -- the useful lifespan of refrigerated food
Page 32: It's been 40 years since Marilu Henner starred on the hit sitcom Taxi, but the great memories and wonderful co-stars are always on her mind because she's still pals with them -- they always stayed in touch with each other and never lost touch and do a Taxi Zoom every two months and they're all very current with each other and they have a text chain as well and they're in contact every week -- Marilu is close with cast members Tony Danza, Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd and Carol Kane
Page 33: Garth Brooks is overjoyed wife Trisha Yearwood has finally bounced back from her bout with COVID-19 -- she seems to be 100 percent, according to Garth, and at the end there during fatigue she got real impatient, really kind of mean and sassy and he thought well, she's back to herself -- after announcing in February that Trisha had the coronavirus and Garth said he had tested negative
Page 40: The grass is always greener when you use these simple gardening tips
* Avoid cat-astrophe -- the right way to add a stray
Page 42: 10 things you never knew about Glenn Close -- the wildly successful actress turned 74 in March
Page 44: Eyes on the Stars -- Sylvester Stallone and wife Jennifer Flavin leave a Florida hotel (picture), Jane Seymour is still looking on the bright side even as the world continues to weather the pandemic, one year after the death of Kenny Rogers his family thanked fans as they honored his life, Sharon Stone is dishing dirt about her Hollywood past in her recently released memoir like one moviemaker who told her to have sex with a male co-star to improve their on-screen chemistry, 28-year-old twins Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer who are the nieces of Princess Diana recently stepped out in South Africa as bridesmaids for fellow high society girl Leila Osato, director Christopher Columbus pooh-poohed internet rumors about the existence of an NC-17 cut of Mrs. Doubtfire but he did confirm there's an unreleased R-rated version
Page 45: Good Morning America co-host Cecilia Vega mugs it up for the camera on the morning show (picture), Gretta Monahan gets out of a car (picture), longtime GMA veteran Robin Roberts displays her ever-present sunny side on the set (picture), the Hollywood Hills home of Johnny Depp recently had some uninvited guests when a man was spotted loitering by the property's pool but ran off after being confronted by a neighbor and not much later Johnny's security team called police about another unwanted visitor who had taken a shower and helped himself to the actor's booze, Elsa Pataky has been married to Chris Hemsworth for 10 years and says patience and communication and understanding are what help their relationship be successful

( jack gilinsky , cis male , he / him, 22 ) no way ! i swear i saw 𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐍 walking down danforth avenue ! i just saw a post about them on 6secrets ! i think it said something like “ 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐅𝐒 𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑 𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐓 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐌𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐆𝐈𝐑𝐋 ”. isn’t that wild ? i guess that makes sense since they’re apparently 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄 and 𝐔𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆. fans will claim that they’re 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐁𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 and 𝐎𝐁𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓. i mean , it’s not like i know them personally — they’re a famous 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐅𝐒 𝐆𝐎𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐄 . whenever i think of them, i think of 𝐒𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐋𝐘 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐃𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑, 𝐒𝐎𝐅𝐓 𝐒𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐍𝐎 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆, & 𝐀 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐄𝐘𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐊 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐌𝐔𝐑𝐃𝐄𝐑 . i wish i would have asked for an autograph ! 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘:
— nolan’s childhood is fairly normal. born to middle class parents in calgary, skating and playing hockey from a young age. he never had to struggle much in his life, save for his parents’ separation when he was twelve, but even that ended well enough. he was always good at reading people, and though it stung at first, he understood.
— he started his hockey career as a forward, until one of his youth teams lacked a goalie when one of his teammates moved away and nolan volunteered himself to fill the spot. ever since that moment he was in love with the position.
— and the truth was though he was a good forward, he was an even better goalie. with reflexes like a cat, observational skills off the charts, he soon settled into net like he belonged there ( and soon, people were saying nothing else ).
— he was drafted to the everette silvertips in the whl when he was 16 where he continued to blossom and grow, setting franchise and league records including a shutout in his first career start and being named chl goalie of the year. and when his draft year in 2016 came, he was taken in the second round by the toronto maple leafs.
— he returned to everette for two more seasons. in 2017-18 collecting the accolades of whl player of the year, whl goalie of the year, and chl goalie of the year ( for the second time, being the first in chl to do so ). he finished with a 116-46-19 record, 2.01 GAA, 0.927 sv%, and 26 shutouts ( tied for most in chl history ).
— he started the next season with the toronto marlies, his next step in development. however, he was unexpectedly called up in december after one of the leafs goalies was placed on injured reserved. to his surprised, they decided to play him in the very next game which he won, becoming the youngest goaltender in over a decade to win his debut and the youngest in leafs history. he proceeded to record four straight wins before the age of 21, the first goalie to do so in over a decade. he was never sent back down to the marlies.
— the next season ( this past one ), saw him become the youngest in leafs history to record a shutout and slowly begin to claim his place as starter by march. he was pivotal in the leafs playoff run, though they were ultimately eliminated in the first round by boston to the surprise of no one.
— he spent much of the off-season in calgary with his family and doing off-season training there, though he recently returned in mid-august to prepare of the upcoming season.
𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂:
— his role on the ice is incredibly high pressure no doubt, but he finds facing the toronto media far more intimidating. toronto is a city that cares very deeply for its team and though that is a good thing, it’s easy to feel stifled and under a microscope under all the scrutiny.
— has two gold ( 2015 18u, 2018 world juniors ) and two silver medals ( 2017 world juniors, 2019 worlds ), all for team canada
— “they see him, get lost in his beautiful eyes and forget how to play hockey.” since nolan has carter’s career claim, i’m claiming this conspiracy for him too ( basically, carter faced two fluke shoot out attempts : one where the player completely missed picking up that puck at center ice and another that lost it halfway to the net — both very very rare things to happen at the nhl level )
— jewish
— 6′2″. dark brown hair, light brown eyes. doesn’t smile an awful lot, but when he does and does genuinely you get the sense akin to the sun coming out from behind a cloud.
— i should put more here but honestly i’m figuring him out as i go
— oh that “mystery girl” in his headline is probs like a cousin or something aha
— should also mention he is bi on dl
— considered a bit of an enigma considering how little people know about him
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘:
— on the ice, nolan is the picture perfect image of focus, dark eyes and a look that could murder if anyone gets too close to him. and for a long time, who he was on the ice and who he was off it weren’t the same thing, but over time those lines began to blur and more and more he was dragging who he was on the ice off it too. the result was an increasingly withdrawn boy which only became worse when his prospect rankings began to rise and his looks only got more handsome. he retreated into the most familiar emotional armor he knew : the one he wore on the ice.
— he’s deeply private, hating to share much of his personal life though he does maintain an instagram on which he occasionally takes pleasure in posting cryptic photos just to confuse people.
— nolan is someone who requires a lot to get to him. he can keep a calm demeanor for an incredibly long time before he cracks, not surprising for someone who holds a position as stressful as his.
— despite his more withdrawn and quiet tendencies, he’s not exactly an asshole. he interacts with his fans courteously enough and doesn’t go out of his way to make anyone else’s life tougher. that being said, a lifetime in goal and as of late plenty of time off it has perfected a damn good death glare that he will use to keep people from talking to him if he has to.
— a man of few words, it’s rare to really get nolan chatty. only his closest friends and teammates succeed at this, otherwise small talk and frivolity often will result in silence. but nolan speaks plenty in actions, certainly someone who places a lot more value in a smile or kind gesture than any verbal expression.
— he’s not nearly as tough as his cagey eyes and stoic exterior would suggest, at heart perhaps a lonely boy who’s thrown up so many walls that he finds it difficult to truly connect with anyone.
𝐎𝐎𝐂:
hello friends... anyone remember noah from six 1.0 ?? well, i basically just made another goalie with carter ha/rt’s career claim 😔😔😔. anyway, i still hate the leafs and i hope six-verse leafs have a better defense than irl leafs, if not then my boy truly has the patience of a saint.
#sixhqintro#this is so bad i'm sorry#the best thing abt this intro#is definitely the header#and that's only bc jack is looking real softe in that photo#and if i called him jason at any point in thsi intro....#pls looke the other way thanks

The Wonders of the Lacy Family
The phenomenon of the Lacy family has had my unwavered attention since May 14th, 2017. 3 months previous to this, there had been buzz around this kid that had just released a solo EP. The EP was “Steve Lacy’s Demo” by Steve Lacy. Gaining traction quickly because of Lacy’s work in R&B band The Internet, it immediately became one of the most important releases of 2017. With just 6 songs, those 14 minutes are some of the most iconic sounds of early 2017 to anybody that listened to it. As people listened more, they got excited, it was a new face in the music industry for many that hadn’t indulged in The Internet. Soon people realized this was a kid, at only 18 he was making tasteful licks and layered vocal harmonies. On April 14th, 2017, San Francisco-based magazine Wired released a video onto their YouTube channel titled “How The Internet's Steve Lacy Makes Hits With His Phone”. The video showed an 18 year old Lacy using the app GarageBand to make a song on his iPhone. In a way, this pioneered the normalization of the making of music on an iPhone, or at least it got rid of a lot of stigmas around it. To me, to be 14 and seeing a kid only 4 years my elder, wearing the same clothes I wear on the cover of his EP, making music on his iPhone, and being actually somewhat respected and even praised for it was incredible. Although, I did not yet have a guitar or bass, I had an iPhone, which was 1/3 of the supplies I needed to make an album in my eyes. Looking back, my Steve Lacy infatuation may have been a slight obsession, but I think it’s what I needed most at that age, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.
If you too listened to and loved “Steve Lacy’s Demo” or even his new album “Apollo XXI”, you may or may not know he has a little sister, Asia Lacy, professionally known in recent years as Asiatica. On the date I mentioned previously, May 14th, 2017, Steve Lacy went live on Instagram and jammed with Asia from their family’s home in Compton, CA. Steve on guitar Asia on bass. The synergy impressed everyone that witnessed it. Both of them are so incredibly talented at both playing instruments and singing. I followed Asia on Instagram right after the live ended, ensuring I didn’t miss something like that ever again. That fall, Asia started her college education at Humboldt University in northern California. She began to go live on Instagram frequently as she was far away from home and didn’t have many friends yet except for her dorm mates. I’m pretty sure I watched all of these livestreams, sitting in my room making some sort of art as Asia skateboarded around campus alone exploring the place or sat in her dorm playing Charles Manson and Paramore songs on guitar, with some original stuff as well. Asia has an insanely good music taste, from Dirty Projectors to Thundercat, she could talk for hours about music she loved. When Asia played original songs of hers on live, I would screen record it so I could listen to her songs again as she didn’t have them recorded or put on streaming services. She seemed reluctant to become a musician, I don’t think it was doubt of her talent, it’s clear to everyone that hears her music that she’s got the talent for it. I think she saw all that was happening to her brother and just found it overwhelming, and who could blame her?
One of the original songs that stood out in her livestreams was “Workin On It”, of course named because she was still workin’ on it. I still have a voice recording I made after that live ended, it’s a melody inspired by what I heard of the song so far (the voice recording was dated August 16th, 2017 if you were curious). On November 25th, 2017, “Workin’ On It” was released, well, it had a new name; “Hide In Me”. I listened to it RELIGIOUSLY. I was so excited, and it did not disappoint. “Hide In Me” is a beautiful yet simple 1 minute 42 second song with harmonic layered vocals and a guitar riff that rips me back to August of 2017, except this time the riff was electrified.
To end off 2017, Tyler the Creator threw a mini festival at the Observatory in my hometown of Santa Ana. The lineup featured Steve Lacy so of course I was dedicated to getting tickets for this. But alas, this is a festival thrown by Tyler the motherfucking Creator, months after “Flowerboy” was released, with maybe like 500 tickets tops, maybe even less. So unfortunately I did not get those tickets. Dedicated to hear my God’s set, I stood in my backyard for about 30 minutes for Steve Lacy’s whole set, in the middle of winter, and 4 days into having stomach flu. And dammit, I live so close, that I actually heard it. It was faint but I could still hear it, and I loved it, I was so proud.
Fast forward to March 2019, I was gearing up for this new Vampire Weekend album, and I see on my Instagram feed, Asia Lacy was going to release an EP. I think I shed a tear or two. Asia had left Humboldt to go back home and spend time with family and friends after feeling estranged from the rest of Humboldt’s student body. She spent the past few months looking after her nephew and making music with her boyfriend, musician and producer Carter Ace (who by the way is a great artist as well). On March 13th, 2019 “Aprilia Ave” by Asiatica was released. It’s an EP with 5 songs that in total runs for 16 minutes. I remember exactly where I was when I listened to this for the first time, I was in a field being showered by sun, the first sun after a cold winter. It was pure joy, the truest form of happiness. The last track “Alright” left me crying tears of joy. All 5 songs are so special and all of them are so good I can’t stress this enough. If you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly suggest you do, it’s streamable on Spotify and Apple Music.
Last Friday, Steve Lacy released his first full length album titled “Apollo XXI”. I added it to my library right when it came out because I knew it was going to be good, and holy shit yeah it is. There’s no skips on this album, every song is great. I even dance to the parts where it’s just blank noise between 2 different parts of a song. I sat out on my front lawn Friday morning listening to the album in full with sun glaring into my baby sunglasses that pinch my nose. I had listened to it in full right when it came out the night before but I wanted to experience it how I experienced “Aprilia Ave”. In a field on a sunny day that was surrounded by overcast days. I felt alive, I felt present, like I was in my body for the first time in years. Legs folded up and ankles crossed as I hugged my knees, my cat pawing at the door in hopes of joining me. “I wonder I wonder, I really wonder” repeating so frequently that I started to sing along. It was like my experience with “Aprilia Ave” except it was pure curiosity and the truest form of wonder. With a future so uncertain, what would this world hold for me this year, I wonder. All I could be certain of in that moment was that whatever happens this year I’ll be listening to “Aprilia Ave” and “Apollo XXI”, so fuck it. I lay my head back in the grass, held my head in my cupped hands, and closed my eyes, and listened to “Playground” on repeat.

I almost cried because I couldn’t attend this event 😔
Report of Archives shown in Asbury Park today
By Stan Goldstein
What a shame this wasn't recorded or filmed or even photos exist yet. The Asbury Park Music and Film Festival photographer was allowed to take pictures of the talk and hopefully they will appear soon.
This was one for the ages. It was spectacular!! Bruce was there. He did a Q&A at the end. Ten videos shown.
Then they had the talk. Thom Zimny and Chris Phillips came out, there was a third chair. Before they started Thom waved to the side of the stage and said "Come out now" and Bruce walked out to a standing ovation.. What followed was an incredible Q & A. It's a shame this wasn't recorded, but I took a lot of notes.
Some breaking news from it.
Bruce said that a DVD/video will be coming out of the full New Orleans Jazzfest show from 2006.
Bruce said that show was "One of his Top-5 live performing experiences."
Bruce also said he would love to see a full Tunnel of Love show come out.
Bruce said a lot of this footage he had never seen before. He said he never saw the clip with Clarence from Buffalo in 2009 before.
Bruce says he's amazed what he can find on Youtube and suggest fans should go there to find some things.
He was very relaxed. Wore a black sweat shirt (sweater? ladies need your help here) with a "5" on it.
Some quotes from Bruce:
"I have lived many lives, many I haven't seen myself," after seeing this footage.
Bruce said they were "superstitious about being filmed in the early days. That's why we never did any TV. We felt that a magician should not look too close at his magic trick."
Bruce then gave a shout out to Barry Rebo who was in the audience. Barry is the one who shot much of the early footage.
Bruce said he was surprised to find out what they have (in the vaults). "I feel glad that Thom was able to dig up this stuff."
Bruce said when they did the filming for "Live in New York City" in 2000 that he felt "he was finally getting over the wall" of not liking to be filmed.
This was after Chris asked him about the Blood Brothers documentary from 1995 being one of the first things being filmed officially.
Bruce had a funny line about being recorded/filmed: "You always think you are more handsome than you actually are and you always think you sound better than you actually do."
Bruce said the 1975 Bottom Line shows "Really changed the life of the band. We were officially contenders. We no longer had to be good, we had to be GREAT! every night." to which many in the ground yelled out "You are!"
Chris asked about doing 10 Bottom Line shows in five days in 1975 (early and late show) and Bruce said they were only an hour-and-a-half each, so it wasn't too bad.
Chris Phillips tried to ask him about the new album but Bruce said he didn't really want to talk about it.
The 10 songs:
1. When You Walk In The Room - Bottom Line, August 16?,1975
One-camera color. Not great quality but who's going to complain seeing Bruce from this era
2. Apollo Medley - Apollo Theater, NYC, March 9, 2012
Chris Phillips asked Bruce about this. It's the clip where Bruce goes up in the balcony and sings from the front, really dangerous.
Bruce: "I don't know what I was thinking when I did that. It wasn't planned, no one was following me. I just said fuck it and I then fucked up the whole arrangement with the band. I was just glad to find some pipes to hold on to. We do perform some death-defying acts."
Bruce also said it was incredible to play there with all the history of the place and it was a great way to break the band in to start the Wrecking Ball tour. Said it was Jake's first show and "there was no pressure."
Bruce also said to Thom that they should put this out someday too. It was all professionally filmed with multiple cameras. This footage was awesome. The look on Patti's face when Bruce was in the balcony was priceless.
3. New York City Serenade, Dec. 15, 1973, Nassau Community College, black and white, two cameras: Rough footagae but incredible.
Chris Phillips asked about David Sancious playing on this. This was the original E Street Band: Bruce, Garry, David, Danny and Vini Lopez. This clip was shown at the Monmouth U. archives event in 2014. A magical clip. David on the piano is spectacular.
"David is one of the most musically talented people I have met and on the planet. His ability to cover everything, he's a master. I loved to have him in the band."
Chris then said "Well there's the elephant in the room. We have some new music and David plays on it and Bruce said "Yea, he plays on some of it. But we don't have to talk about that."
4. My City Of Ruins - Seeger Sessions, Jazzfest, 2006
Pro-shot, multiple camera footage. Great shots of the crowd singing along "Rise Up!" According to Bruce, this whole show will be out at some point.
Bruce: "The Sessions Band was a great band. I want to do that again. It was a great day. The day before we went driving down to the Ninth Ward. Rock and Roll is best when the stakes are on the table and go go against trouble and hard times. It was good to perform there and serve."
Bruce said to come back to Asbury Park now is so great to see how it is doing. He said he feels like the "Ghost of Christmas past" when he walks around
5. Quarter to Three, Bottom Line, August 16, 1975
Bruce asked Thom Zimny who shot this? And Thom told him Barry Rebo.
Great, color, one-camera footage. Bruce is all over the place. Dancing on the center table in front of the stage. Jumping on Danny's organ then going over to Roy's piano. At one point he drops his guitar pick and a fan hands it back to him. Young, classic Bruce at his best.
Bruce said the band was physically and literally half the size they are now back in those days compared to the Apollo footage now. .
6. Promised Land - Freehold, Nov. 8, 1996
A one-camera close up shot of Bruce in color. Not the greatest video but I'm not going to complain.
Bruce said "going back to St. Rose of Lima was tough enough. I did debut 'Freehold' that night.
7. Who Do You Love/She's the One - Tunnel of Love tour, Rotterdam, June 28,1988.
May have been the highlight clip of the afternoon. Hard rocking E Street Band with the spotlight on Clarence. He's at his peak physically and is all over. "The sight of the The Big Man and the maracas" Bruce said with a smile.
Some epic footage of Bruce and Clarence practically making love on stage. You have to see it to understand. The women in the audience particularly liked this clip.
This is when Bruce said "We should put out a Tunnel of Love show."
8. Patti Scialfa doing "Tell Him" from the Stone Pony 10th anniversary show, 1984 with Cats on a Smooth Surface. Nice color, one-camera shot.
"I almost had her here today," Bruce said. "That's the night I met my wife, 30 years ago at the Stone Pony. As I said in the Broadway show, it was the first time I heard her sing. She was playing with Bobby Bandiera, an Asbury Park hero."
Bruce asked where that footage came from and Thom Zimny said Kevin Buell knew someone who had it.
9. Sandy - Dec. 15, 1973, acoustic with Danny Federici, black and white. Nice version but a bit slow. But hey it's classic Danny and Bruce.
Bruce kidded that "I thought I was going to fall asleep at any moment. I went to the bathroom and came back I was still playing!"
Chris asked Bruce a little bit more about "Sandy" and the writing of it and Bruce said "Sandy was when things were just starting to happen for the band. It was a goodbye to Asbury Park. The last night Danny Federici played with us (Indianapolis, March 20, 2008) I asked him what he wanted to play and he said 'Sandy.' The song was appropriate because I wrote it It as the ending of something wonderful and the beginning of something new. We were leaving Asbury Park just as things were changing,"
10. Growing Up - Buffalo, Nov. 22, 2009. With the story of meeting Clarence.
Bruce said he had never seen this clip before. "The story is completely true, all those things. It actually happened. Looking at that, I really miss the Big Man" Bruce said as he and the crowd got a bit emotional.
Toward the end Bruce thanked Thom Zimny, saying "He has allowed us to use this great footage. He's like another member of the band."
Bruce said how he saw a Jean Claude van Damme movie and called Thom up and said "we should look like that for the Darkness taping right on this stage." Which was done in December of 2009, the filming of the band playing the entire album for the box set.
Bruce also commended Thom for his work on "Springsteen on Broadway" and said "Broadway was going well, let's not fuck this thing up!" Bruce kidded that the "magic begins with: 'Do I look great?'"
There was a little bit of talk about the "Night with the Jersey Devil" film and the short movie made from "Hunter of Invisible Game."
Chris Phillips also asked Bruce about the Upstage movie that is being shown tomorrow and what Bruce thought about the original version which he saw in 2017.
"Why am I not in this?" Bruce said. He then did do an interview for it which will be in the new version. He continued: "That last time I walked into the Upstage it looked exactly how it looked in 1968."
Some notes: Cameron Crowe was in the audience as were the Farrelly Brothers.
When I got to my seat, I was told I was being moved. I bought a single ticket the moment they were on sale and ended up in the first row. They told me my seat was going to be used by Bruce and his family. I got bumped up to a folding chair in the pit right in front of the stage. A little tough to watch the videos but right in front of Bruce for the Q&A so no complaints here. As it turned out, Bruce never sat in the seats anyway. He did watch from the side up against the wall of the lower right (facing the stage) orchestra for a bit
The locking up the cellphones thing worked well. In a way it was kind of nice not having a zillion phones up when Bruce was onstage but what a shame that it wasn't record for "the archives", then again, maybe it was. I don't know.
Great job by Chris Phillips. What I liked is he asked "fan-type"" questions, not like how a New York Times or Rolling Stone writer would try to talk about it.
And if you stayed this long, thank you for reading

Some of you wanted to see all of my tattoos, so here they are! Well, technically not all of them because I’m a dumbass and took videos of 6 of them without remembering that Tumblr doesn’t work like IG or FB and I can’t put images / videos in the same post. And I’m too lazy to go back and take photos, plus some of them are on parts of me that curve so pics don’t do them justice anyway. I’ll post a video with the rest in a bit. SO! In the meantime, here’s the first 7 - names and meanings and explanations and me rambling about them each individually under the cut for those interested!
So, in the order that they appear~
Pluto’s Still A Planet Damnit (Dec 2015 - 3 years old): my 6th tattoo! Done by Steve Oker while he was still at Hart & Huntington Orlando. Surprisingly one of my least painful tattoos despite being on my spine - Jupiter and Saturn weren’t pleasant as they’re right on vertebrae, but the rest weren’t too bad. And yes, Pluto is in there. Fite me.
Boo! and Double!Cat (Oct 13, 2017 - 1 year old): Friday the 13th tattoos! They were my 10th / 11th tattoos. I went with a bunch of friends from my work at the time. Boo! is on the back of my right arm, right above my elbow. Double!Cat is on my left hip, quarter in photo for size reference. Not my best tattoos, but the experience of getting them with friends was worth it! Might eventually cover Double!Cat if I ever get a big side piece, who knows. Boo! is here to stay though, I love them.
Flowers that always get mistaken for a weird owl oh well (March 2016 - 2.5 years old): my 7th tattoo and my ONLY big impulse tattoo - because it has the most sentimental value. When I was born, a family friend drew this for my parents. They’re the flowers, holding up the little baby butterfly (me). I’ve kept this artwork with me, even though my parents got divorced when I was eight. One morning I woke up, looked over at it, and decided to get it as a tattoo. And the next day I did.
i was in the sherlock fandom...once upon a time (June 2013 - 5.5 years old): my very first tattoo. The name should speak for itself but yeah I used to be in the Sherlock fandom way back before it all went to shit (so basically...first season) and it kinda helped me come out of my shell? Like I went to the 1st and 2nd 221b Cons by myself I still don’t understand how my mom let me travel 6 hours away to go to a con by myself when I was 16 / 17 but okay. So I made a lot of friends at these cons. Because we were all nerds. And uh, yeah. It scarred really bad - it was probably a combo of the artist being really heavy-handed and me not really knowing how to properly take care of a new tattoo?
Totorororororororo (July 13, 2018 - 4 months old): another Friday the 13th tattoo, and my 12th tat overall! It was on the flash sheet for Fallen Sparrow, and luckily enough I got Barythaya as my artist. I’ll probably go back and get him shaded at some point. He’s sitting happily on the inside of my right ankle - opposite of my HMC symbol tattoo (next pic) as part of my Ghibli tribute. Totoro is Ghibli’s mascot, and the symbol is from one of my favorite Ghibli films. Eventually I’m getting Mickey Mouse on the inside of my left ankle, with the A symbol from Atlantis (fav Disney film) opposite it. So, yeah.
Moving House aka I want to travel aka it would take me so long to explain this tattoo to someone who doesn’t know Howl’s Moving Castle that this is my go-to explanation now (Nov 2014 - 4 years old): my 3rd tattoo! It’s on the outside of my right ankle, opposite of Totorororororororo. It’s the symbol that Howl draws inside of the castle in the Studio Ghibli film Howl’s Moving Castle when he’s ‘moving house’ and changing the portals. Just watch the movie. It’s so good, and you’ll understand then.
I’ll post a video of the rest of my tattoos in a bit. Thanks for reading if you made it this far!
#my tats#tattoo#tattoos#see they're not all massive like my arm pieces!#some are itty bitty!#but yeah I would say that at least 5 are large#3 mediums#5 small?#my tattoos

The Witch Challenge
Saw this going around, figured I’d poke at it... keep it going with your own answers and enjoy!
1. Are you solitary or in a coven? Can I say both? I practice with my coven and I also practice as solitary - to better myself and for magick or intent that I cannot share with others.
2. Do you consider yourself Wiccan, Pagan, witch, or other? Pagan… witch...
3. What is your zodiac sign? Pisces (Sun and Rising) Sag (Moon)
4. Do you have a Patron God/dess? Yes, Cerridwen.
5. Do you work with a Pantheon? Yes - a couple actually. I work closely the Welsh/Celtic pantheon, but I also work with Greek and Norse gods as well. I’m eclectic at heart, so I am open to any of the god/desses that call to me.
6. Do you use tarot, palmistry, or
any other kind of divination? Yes - tarot, astrology, mediumship are my go to’s.
7. What are some of your favorite herbs to use in your practice? (if any) Rosemary, Cedar, Mugwort
8. How would you define your craft? Eclectic at heart, and it has morphed over the years. Right now, it seems to be a form of Celtic Shamanism with a dash of Strega (which surfaced over the past year as I started to study where exactly I came from).
9. Do you curse? If not, do you accept others who do? This seems a rather personal question and in my honest opinion, is only the business of the practitioner… that being said, I do accept others that do, as long as they do responsibly.
10. How long have you been practicing? Actively practicing, 10 years - although I did start dabbling closer to 20 years ago.
11. Do you currently or have you ever had any familiars? Yes… he’s a black and white ‘water’ cat - his name is Boo. :)
12. Do you believe in Karma or
Reincarnation? Yes. Both.
13. Do you have a magical name? Yes, a few actually - know to most as Trinity, initiated as Cerridwen Cauldronborn in March of 2017 - and the other names are only know to those in my closest circle.
14. Are you “out of the broom closet”? Yeah, for the most part...
15. What was the last spell you performed? Feb. 16… well after ritual that night.
16. Would you consider yourself knowledgeable?
Yes, but with still countless things to learn.
17. Do you write your own spells? Yes.
18. Do you have a book of shadows?
If so, how is it written and/or set up? Yes, have a family BoS and 2 personal ones. Family book is wood bound, personal one is leather and the other a 3 ring binder. Not all that organized except to the people who use them.
19. Do you worship nature? This seems like a silly question...
20. What is your favorite gemstone? Septarian
21. Do you use feathers, claws, fur, pelt, skeletons/bones, or any other animal body part for magical work? Yes - hair, feathers, bone, cat claws and whiskers - all naturally ‘given’.
22. Do you have an altar? Several.
23. What is your preferred element?
Water.
24. Do you consider yourself an Alchemist?
Yes.
25. Are you any other type of magical practitioner besides a witch?
As in what exactly? A witch is a magick practitioner - there are categories and types of magick, but if you practice magick, you’re some type of witch.
26. What got you interested in witchcraft? The husband - he grew up Pagan. And my folks never really liked him because he identified as a witch and, you know, that’s bad. So, after we got married, I figured, well he can’t be all that bad and did some research. Nothing has ever resonated more with me in my life!
27. Have you ever performed a spell or ritual with the company of anyone who was not a witch? No.
28. Have you ever used ouija? Yes, often.
29. Do you consider yourself a psychic? Yes.
30. Do you have a spirit guide? If so, what is it? A couple actually - my animal guide is an otter.
31. What is something you wish someone had told you when you first started? I don’t really know - don’t have an answer to this one.

33. Would you ever teach witchcraft to your children? Yes, and I do.
34. Do you meditate? Yes.
35. What is your favorite season? Fall.
36. What is your favorite type of magick to preform? Invocative, Sympathetic, and Divinatory
37. How do you incorporate your spirituality into your daily life? Meditation, almost daily. I also have crystals/herbs and other magickal items placed throughout and outside of the house for various magick things. I also do a lot of candle work, at least once a week.
38. What is your favorite witchy movie? Mists of Avalon
39. What is your favorite witchy book, both fiction and non-fiction. Why? Nonfiction is a toss up between Crone Magic and Cauldronborn… fiction, I enjoyed Harry Potter and the Witch and Wizard series.
40. What is the first spell you ever performed? Successful or not. It was a banishing - and it was successful.
41. What’s the craziest witchcraft-related thing that’s happened to you? When I was researching Paganism, trying to decide if it was horrible or not, I put a call out to the Goddess - told her, if she wanted me, she would have to give me some kind of undeniable sign. That night, I woke three different times, to a woman’s voice yelling my name. My husband heard nothing. That’s when I decided to dedicate myself to the work of the Goddess.
42. What is your favourite type of candle to use? All of them, I’m really not prejudice ;) I’m a candle maker myself...
43. What is your favorite witchy tool? Again, all of them - I don’t use anything for my Craft that I don’t love.
44. Do you or have you ever made your own witchy tools? Yes.
45. Have you ever worked with any magical creatures such as the fea or spirits? Yes, all the time.

49. Do you believe in predestination or fate? Yes, but I also believe it can be changed.
50. What do you do to reconnect when you are feeling out of touch with your practice? This usually happens when life gets busy and I don’t make time to meditate - and I need to just get back into it.
51. Have you ever had any supernatural experiences? Yes, quite a few actually
52. What is your biggest witchy pet peeve? The hypocrites… those who claim to be a witch just because it’s trendy or they’re a rebel. Those who walk around like they know everything there is to know, and and look down their nose at others because they’ve practiced longer/trained in whatever/older/younger/different path/etc.
53. Do you like incense? If so what’s your favorite scent? Yes, but I usually make my own - love frank and myrrh resins tho!
54. Do you keep a dream journal of any kind? Yes.
55. What has been your biggest witchcraft disaster? Doing magick during a voc moon - smoke alarms blaring at midnight, almost set ablaze my altar!
56. What has been your biggest witchcraft success? This is a tough one, and there’s a few that come to mind… but I think the biggest ‘success’ is me. As I get to know myself and better myself, the stronger I become, and with magick, that makes all the difference!
57. What in your practice do you do that you may feel silly or embarrassed about? Not really - I have my practice, you have yours. I don’t judge others, and could care less if they judge me.
58. Do you believe that you can be an atheist, Christian, Muslim or some other faith and still be a witch too? Indeed!
59. Do you ever feel insecure, unsure or even scared of spell work? I used to, not anymore.
60. Do you ever hold yourself to a standard in your witchcraft that you feel you may never obtain? I hold myself to getting better with every ritual/spell.
61. What is something witch related that you want right now? Tattoos… looking to get a Celtic knot cuff on my wrist and the bard symbol on the back of my neck with “Ní neart go cur le chéile” - There’s no strength without unity.
62. What is your rune of choice? Jera
63. What is your tarot card of choice? The Fool
64. Do you use essential oils? If so what is your favorite? Aromatherapist here! My favorite is clove.
65. Have you ever taken any kind of witchcraft or pagan courses? Yes - online and in person.
66. Do you wear pagan jewelry in public? Yes.
67. Have you ever been discriminated against because of your faith or being a witch? Yes.
68. Do you read or subscribe to any pagan magazines? Yes.
69. Do you think it’s important to know the history of paganism and witchcraft? Yes.
70. What are your favorite things about being a witch? Everything...the freedom to just be yourself.
71. What are your least favorite things about being a witch? The instant fear in someone’s face when they find out I’m a witch...and then the preaching that follows.
72. Do you listen to any pagan music? If so who is your favorite singer/band? Yes - Damh the Bard/Blackmore’s Night
73. Do you celebrate the Esbbats? If so, how? Yes - with coven when they have ritual and at home during the full moon. We light up the candles, make offering to the nature spirits, re-ward and cleanse the house, sit out crystals in the moonlight and sometimes sing to the moon herself.
74. Do you ever work skyclad? Yes, but only at home.
75. Do you think witchcraft has improved your life? If so, how? Yes - I’ve done A LOT of self work in my Craft, not that I’m anywhere near done! My confidence has improved greatly, ,my understanding of people and the world in general has shifted, I’m empowered, I’m a healer, and I am free, spiritually. I’m still working thru physical and mental health issues, but it’s easier now - and I have a family that supports my growth.
76. Where do you draw inspiration from for your practice? My daydreams, walks out in nature, and late nights - after a certain hour, I’ve found that I think and perceive things a little different… and I’m more comfortable with myself as well.
77. Do you believe in ‘fantasy’ creatures? (Unicorns, fairies, elves, gnomes, ghosts, etc) Yes.
78. What’s your favorite sigil/symbol? Triquetra
79. Do you use blood magick in your practice? Why or why not? Yes, and just began recently - not for just anything tho. It started because someone gave me an idea, so I did my research and tried it. Blood magick is a powerful tool and it works, so I use it when needed.
80. Could you ever be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t support your practice? No.
81. In what area or subject would you most like your craft to grow? Right now, my magickal goal is very personal.
82. What’s your favorite candle scent? Do you use it in your practice? See, I make candles, so this is a rough one :/ I have one called Witches Brew, which is a blend of amber and ylang ylang,,, that’s probably my favorite… and yes!
83. Do you have a pre-ritual ritual? (I.e. Something you do before rituals to prepare yourself for them). If so what is it? Bath or shower with salts/oils/incense
84. What real life witch most inspires your practice? I don’t really have one.
85. What is your favorite method of communicating with deity? Invocation/channelling
86. How do you like to organize all your witchy items and ingredients? Drawers and boxes - organized so that I know where everything is and disorganized enough so that others can’t ;)
87. Do you have any witches in your family that you know of? After a bit of research, I found a few on both sides of my family - but my family did a decent job hiding it, to the point where I’m not even sure my parents know about them.
88. How have you created your path? What is unique about it? Tbh, I believe everyone’s path is pretty unique - and yes, I do not follow a particular path because I’m eclectic. My path shifts and changes when the need arises… kinda like that river thing, you never step in the same river 2x because it’s always moving and changing? That’s kinda what my Craft is like.
89. Do you feel you have any natural gifts or affinities (premonitions, hearing spirits, etc.) that led you toward the craft? If so what are they? Empathy and premonitions are things I grew up with and evolved naturally into my practice. Spirit communication, energy healing and divination came very easy to me, once I woke up to them.
90. Do you believe you can initiate yourself or do you have to be initiated by another witch or coven? It’s a personal decision, really. I believe it can be done either way.
91. When you first started out in your path what was the first thing or things you bought? Candles
92. What is the most spiritual or magickal place you’ve been? Sedona, AZ
93. What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone who is searching for their matron and patron deities? Let them come to you - meditate and pray, keep an open heart and mind - then do your research!
94. What techniques do you use to ‘get in the zone’ for meditation? Not a lot, noise cancellation headphones work well tho (don’t even need the music, just the silence)!
95. Did visualization come easily to you or did you have to practice at it? Visualization comes very easy to me.
96. Do you prefer day or night? Why? Late night; it has been my experience that the mind works better the later it gets.
97. What do you think is the best time and place to do spell work? Dusk; outdoors
98. How did you feel when you cast your first circle? Did you stumble or did it go smoothly? Well, I clearly remember feeling the shift - whether or not it was ‘smooth’, I have no idea lol - but I considered it a success when I felt the shift.
99. Do you believe witchcraft gets easier with time and practice? Yes.
100. Do you believe in many gods or one God with many faces? Both.
101. Do you eat meat, eggs and dairy? Yes to meat, no eggs or dairy (mostly because I have crappy reactions to them)
102. What is your favorite color and why? It’s a toss up between midnight blue and forest green… and it’s just because I like them really.
103. What is the one question you get asked most by non-practitioners or non-pagans? How do you usually respond? So, what do you do exactly? And tbh, the answer all depends on who’s talking to me...
104. Which of your five senses would you say is your strongest? Toss up - hearing/smell. 105. What is a pagan or witchcraft rule that you preach but don’t practice? Are there really rules? And I try not to teach/preach things I don’t practice...and when I do, someone promptly throws my words back at me!

Retail Christmas Hell
Paring: Heimdall/Reader
Tags: female reader, but with gender neutral pronouns, supermarket AU, Christmas shopping, Christmas Eve, swearing, fluff.
Summary: Reader works at the local grocery store. Her manager, Thor Odinson, hires a handful of security guards to make sure his workers are safe in the silly season chaos.
Word Count: 1,803
Posting Date: 2016-12-16
Current Date: 2017-05-31
Christmastime was a month of furious soccer mothers, kids stealing candies, vengeful elderly people who were known usually to be sweet and comely, and generally, lines that went out the door as far as the eye could see. To be honest, it never phased you, seeing as the more people who came through your register, kept you busy and on your feet, the faster time went and the closer it was until knock off.
Odinson's Food Market was known for its fresh produce and friendly smiles, but when you had to put up with screaming babies and the bossing around of customers who wanted bags packed a certain way, the last thing you were thinking of, to be frank, was smiling at the assholes who left their food shopping to the last minute and were in a rush like there was no tomorrow.
You weren't sure how the store was handling it; Tony who stacked the shelves said they were too busy to breathe as the people would practically wipe the canned food and things into their carts as soon as he stacked it. Your manager, Thor was always on his feet trying to sort out altercations and mixups with prices and hormonal adults arguing over the last watermelon on sale. Even Clint, who ran the little deli in the side of the store said he was in over his head with orders for hams and turkeys and such.
In short, Christmastime was retail hell.
But, it was money, and you needed just that to get out of the hell at home to rent an apartment as far away as you could from your terrible family as you could, and maybe, just maybe go to higher education so those who came after you in your bloodline weren't doomed to repeat history. This dream was that which kept your fake smile on, hands without cramps, and tolerance to the shoddy customers higher than that of a saint.
So far, the end of November and the better half of December had been a madhouse, with everyone coming in and grabbing their long life items, stocking up on decorations and fairy lights for their trees, on their holiday foods. Now, nearing the day itself, it seemed to be busier twofold than you'd ever seen it in your time here at Odinson's Food Market. Lines were larger. Ambience louder. The faraway echo of a howling child nearing in the pram, pushed by the nuclear family about to go nuclear if they did't buy the right sort of Parmesan.
It was a Tuesday when Thor Odinson decided, that he would use his father's funds to do something more than advertise for the little store with. It was a Tuesday when he hired five security guards from the privately owned company called ASGARSHIELD. As someone who only went to school because your parents were sick of having kids around their feet at home, you weren't really from a background where you'd seen many security guards. Maybe the ones in the bank who scowled over their shades indoors to make sure you didn't make a heist while they were on guard, or even the policemen, sure, but never these people.
Nat, Phil, Heimdall, Sam and Maria started that day, standing at the entrance to the store to ward off evil with their professional glares, to break up quarrels before they began. Nat and Maria never talked, always staying in their spot, watching out with near superhuman vision. Phil was all business until he made friends with one of the other cashiers, Steve, yammering on about their mutual love for an old time-y comic character when (if) it got slow enough to talk. Sam stuck around inside, stalking the known shoplifters like a falcon, picking them up on stuffing lollies down their pants in the act. And Heimdall, the quiet, intrusive Heimdall, would watch the entrance at the end of your register.
It took another Tuesday and a half for Heimdall to break his calm, collected shell; you noticed this well with your cashier eyes. When your friends had asked what 'cashier eyes' were, they'd laughed; that you had super-vision or something while on duty, noticing things about people or situations as to avoid major fallout and such. But with this very real, very handy super power of yours, you saw Heimdall watching you, as he always did for the last month, except, he was smiling. Just a little; not enough to show his teeth, but enough to know he had the muscles in his body to do so.
"You alright, sir?" you ask him, leaning over the register booth to see him better. With five minutes without a customer, you were free to relieve yourself of the stresses of standing up for nine hours a day and those customers that backchat. "Look a little off in your head there."
Heimdall nodded. "Just been watching you, that's all." He frowns, gesturing to the family who had gone on their way. "How can you stand it, talking to people all day?"
You crack a smile at that, "Well, how can you stand it, standing there, watching people all day?" you ask back, staring into his dark eyes. "I've been doing this job for years now, it just sort of grows on you, and, well, after the first dozen angry customers, you try to make sure that the next person whose mood is down can be perked up a little bit." You glance to your side, and noticing a customer pushing their trolley into your bay, you give him a nod, and start the never-ending job once again.
It was the Tuesday before Christmas, which, coincidentally, was the day before. It was the day from hell, and apart from your hair looking like literal crap, so was your mood, even though it was the same fake smile for every person who wanted things bagged a certain way. Maybe it was because the air conditioner slash heat was working overtime too and broke, or the fact that even Steve, the angel from above was having trouble with these literal demons buying four hundred dollars of empty carbs in their carts, but before you knew it, the icing on the cake was being laid out.
He had bars in his brows and lips, and looked like he came from good breeding for every part of his DNA except for the manners that were as black as his soul and clothing. There was nothing nice about this guy; perhaps the only nice thing would be that he couldn't stay there bossing you around, calling you names.
"I need those bottles double bagged, I've got a way to walk, you bitch," he hissed, barely glancing up from his Blackberry. Who even had a Blackberry, this was the modern ages, not 2006. "Fuck - not like that -," he tossed his phone into a pocket in his heavy greatcoat, and leaned over like the register bay was nothing between the pair of you. For a moment, your heart stopped, thinking he was going to throttle you, because well, he looked like he was high on something, and not just his ego. At once, he began to rip the bags from the rack, throwing them haphazardly into others.
You glanced to Heimdall, but it seemed like he got the message before you sent it. At once, the man was upon the guy, pushing him back into his side of the register, where all the other customers were supposed to stand, and stay.
"I'm going to have to ask you to leave," Heimdall intoned, voice monotonous like he was a secret service agent.
At once, the punk guy stretched to full height, and cocked his head like he was ready to fight anyone and anything that stood in his way. "I'm just leaving. I need my stuff for Christmas, and I'll be off." He gritted.
You stood there, stock still, heart racing like a little mouse caught in the crossfire of a cat and dog. Heimdall noticed you, or maybe he just knew everything that happened inside the places he was protecting, and crossed his arms. "I will not hesitate to remind you, sir, this establishment does not serve those who treat those working are slaves." His voice was not small, but booming, loud enough to be heard over the hubbub of the store. "You can take your business elsewhere."
The guy make a noise, somewhere between a grunt and a hiss, and marched off, mumbling something about 'the wrath of the Von Doom family' and something very rude, and unable to be mentioned again in polite conversation.
The rest of the line of people who had witnessed the outburst had been humbled by the rudeness the guy displayed, and the dominance that the tall security guard had shown. Not another person was ill-spoken to you that night, but you guessed it had something to do with the fact that Heimdall had stationed himself beside the register like he was a secret service man protecting a president's child or something.
By the time the shift ended - your coworkers loved to let you go first, they knew you had a lot on your plate - you couldn't help but not leave until you had some answers. Heimdall was just collecting his backpack, shades atop his forehead even though it was ten o'clock at night. "I - I want to say thanks for what you did, early," you managed to get out, biting your lip. "He's always been a bit of a prick - I mean, not a nice guy to me every other time he comes through."
"You're very welcome, _______." Heimdall nodded, pulling the other strap of his backpack on. "I could tell. He's not a nice guy."
You bob your head, but it's then you realise. With Christmas being tomorrow, and your few days off until New Years Eve, you won't be seeing him again, perhaps ever. He's been so nice to you, always looking out, keeping an eye on you. A spark of courage is mustered, and you burst out, "Um, I'm not sure if you like pizza, and seeing most pizza stores are closed over the holidays, but I'd like to go out there, er, with you, to say thanks. Properly." You blurt.
It couldn't have been any more botched, the poor guy could see through that in an instant -
"I love pizza," he smiles, and grabbing a notepad from his pocket, pens down digits in ink. "Here's my number. I look forward to seeing you again, _______."
You were sure that Tony and Thor were cheering over by the front desk. Even more sure that Clint from the deli had overheard, as there was a huge whistle, and sure enough, there he was, with two thumbs up high above his head.

JENNY FROM ARKANSAS.....BIG TIME FOLLOWER
I was sitting at the bar last night at the Chart Room when a lovely lady sat next to me. She started chatting immediately…..I was in last night looking for you, met you with my husband in November, etc.
I did not recognize her until she mentioned she was a librarian, her husband a dairy farmer and they lived in Arkansas. The bell rang!
Jenny 45, married to Spence.
Jenny’s mother Rita was with her. Karen’s husband Spence back home in Arkansas working the farm.
Rita told me she and the family have been coming to Key West for Christmas for 15 years. Impressive.
Jenny and I spoke at length. She is a fan. Reads the blog daily, has purchased and read Irma and Me, and listens religiously every tuesday to my podcast Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou. Loves the podcast!
Jenny is the first person I have met who religiously follows the podcast. I have noticed the blog and podcast are distinct and separate audiences. Different.
Rita’s son, Jenny’s brother, was married saturday in Memphis. Mother Rita was stressed out from the event. Ergo, Jenny took mother to Key West for a few days of rest and relaxation.
I have become interested in farming. Especially farms that are in competition with or have become associated with the big corporations like Monsanto. In addition to dairy farming, Jenny’s husband Spence grows rice.
We had an interesting discussion re the pros and cons of doing business with major corporations.
Seated next to Jenny was Karen. Karen and husband Jim visiting Key West for the second time. From Cleveland. Two grown children. Son an architect, daughter a financial forecaster. Karen refers to her son as a Doctor for Buildings.
Jim an electrical equipment salesman.
Karen charming.
Made sure I got home in time for the Syracuse/Duke game. Close. Syracuse lost 69-65.
Good game. Both teams using zone defenses. Penetration difficult.
Syracuse lost the game near the end of the first half. It was neck and neck up to that time. Then Duke went of a 10 point run and went into half time with a 7 point lead.
I am proud of Syracuse. The regular season was disastrous. Syracuse did not have it. Then improvement began appearing in the ACC post season tournament. Major improvement in the 3 NCAA tournament games.
It is called redemption. A job well done!
The big students’ march today. High school students demanding improvement in gun laws. The big demonstration in Washington. World wide, also.
And in Key West! The Key West portion begins at noon at South Beach. It will go straight down Duval to Mallory Square. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.
Irma still with us. There are post Irma effects. This morning’s Key West Citizen pointed out two.
Florida lobsters one.
The lobster season ends April 1. During Irma, 24,000 traps were lost. Translated into a 60 percent smaller harvest. The dollar loss totaling $38.6 million.
The hospitality industry hurting, also. Revenues down 20 percent. Tourists think Irma wiped Key West out and we are still rebuilding.
Key West an island of writers. Yesterday and today. One of the famous ones Tennessee Williams. Lived in Key West more than 30 years.
On this day in 1955, Williams’ play Cat On A Hot Tin Roof opened on Broadway. Two days before his 44th birthday. Twenty eight years before his death in 1985.
Williams lived on Duncan Street. My Lisa and family live 1.5 blocks down the street from the Williams home.
There is an excitement associated with passing the homes of Key West notables. People like Hemingway and Williams. I get a thrill.
An interesting article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal re human sperm.
Demand for human sperm is a fast growing market. U.S. sperm most in demand. In many locales world wide.
Demand for American sperm for example has skyrocketed in Brazil. In 2011, the demand was 16. In 2017, more than 500.
Wealthy Brazilian women creating the demand. Rich singles and lesbian couples. The DNA most in demand light complexioned, blond haired, and blue eyed.
Modern science absolutely amazing!
One of the most popular donors is #9601 at the Seattle Sperm Bank. He has all the characteristics demanded.
Tubes of semen from young men are frozen in liquid nitrogen and flown to Brazilian airports.
This is the day! At 7 this evening as the sun sets, the guns will roar, the band will play. Chris and Don will be saying their I Do’s.
Two special people tying the knot.
I will be there! On time!
Enjoy your day!

20 THOUGHTS: 2018, The Sequel
2018. Richmond are reigning premiers. The Bulldogs are no longer reigning premiers.
What a bizarre collection of twelve words you would have never thought possible.
Who would be so brave to think we can’t have another drought broken, an expansion side’s first, or perhaps another fairy-tale for a side coming from outside the eight to be a flag contender within a year?
The more things change, the more things stay the same. The same coaches under the pump this time last year are still under the pump, messer Hardiwck aside. Umpiring will be umpiring, the MRP will be the MRP, and congestion will no doubt come up before Easter.
Strap yourselves in, another six months of that all too familiar love-hate insomnia kicks off once again.
1. Where to start? Well James Hird coming back to footy is an interesting one. Sure he had some failures as a senior coach, some bigger than others, but no-one can question that he would be astute in the right position. But the idea that it would be controversial, that it needs AFL approval, that its bad PR, please! If the United States is ok with JAL flying direct from Tokyo to Honolulu given that flight path’s history, we can be ok with James Hird back in football I think.
2. The big story of the year, the re-emergence of Fremantle for mine. They can get at least nine wins at their new Optus Stadium, two of which will be in Derbies. They finished first after the home and away as soon as two years ago, yes the wheels fall off soon thereafter, but with a fit superstar captain, a forward line of McCarthy, Walters, Ballantyne, Bennell, Matera, a backline of Johnson, Hamling, Pearce, Wilson, Spurr, Sandilands down to Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, the Hill brothers, plus superstar kids Blakely, Logue, Brayshaw and Cerra, finals are certainly doable and with an ounce of luck a top four show. Wilson will prove to be a great get and don’t forget, Ross Lyon can definitely coach a top four team.
3. Essendon and Port Adelaide are the off-season big spenders, bringing in a plethora of mature aged recruits. For the Bombers, it will help, they are still on the rise, but it’s not flag material just yet. For Port, as I’ll touch on shortly, they will go up, they should have won a final last year and then been in a position to have a crack at GWS for a spot in a Prelim, they are going to be dangerous.
4. The Cats though, got the Son of God back, but what does it do for them? Not tonnes. Dangerfield, Ablett and Selwood will win them many games, but they can’t all have 35 and kick 3, the backline needs a chiro, the forward line has a 1990s full forward stuck in a 2018 team, too many question marks. If they didn’t have Danger, it's a bottom ten team.
5. The new Optus Stadium looks an absolute treat. But alas, all the fixtures this year are either afternoon or twilight, we won’t get the spectacle of a big night game, why, because it would be too late into Melbourne. We can stay up past 10pm on a Saturday if it means Perth gets a big evening game, surely?
6. How’s bout The Footy Show? Oh dear. As popular as Barnaby Joyce at a family values workshop, or an office singles mixer, or a Mardi Gras party.
7. Tom Lynch, my pick, he heads to Collingwood. Not a biased view, but would you be content to put your only key forward talent down back in 2018, leaving an injury-prone All-Australian CHB and an American experiment as your only inside 50 targets if you had confidence in securing one of the best tall forwards in the game for 2019? Yes. The Pies have massive cap room, Pendlebury, Treloar and Sidebottom are all on less than market value, they stop paying Heath Shaw this year as well.
8. Robbo watch, his Top 50, Daniher at 8, Kennedy at 10, have there been too many Melbourne Bitters for Robbo over Summer? Here we go again, another six months of sloppiness?
9. He had Dangerfield at one, Martin at two. Who he had at three will handsomely be on top by year’s end – Fyfe is the best when fit.
10. Carlton play finals in 2019 - Cripps, Curnow, Dow, O'Brien, Petrevski-Seton, McKay, Garlett, Marchbank, Weitering, Pickett - we believe Bolton can coach, so 2019, September, Carlton, bank it.
11. Lance Franklin will surpass 900 goals this year, age 31. Dunstall did the same thing as a 30 year old, finished with 1254, third all time. Buddy is a Hall of Fame Legend lock, arguably the best many of us will ever see.
12. Can't have State of Origin, can't save Tasmanian football, but we can junket International Rules to the New York Red Bulls stadium sometime in late Spring? AFL against Gaelic in a sport neither plays in the backwaters of New Jersey - if Trump was AFL CEO then that sounds like something he would do. Pull your head in Gil!
13. Melbourne and St Kilda. Should both play finals. But are either Goodwin or Richardson the next Clarkson and able to take a team the whole way? Not yet convinced. Watch Ross Lyon and the Dockers scoot past one, maybe both.
14. Giants are the big ticket this year and this columns likens their plight to the familiar children’s fable Goldilocks. The eighteenth side is kinda like the Three Bears’ porridge, 2016 was too hot, 2017 was too cold, 2018 will be just right.
15. Where are Hawthorn this year? O'Meara hurts opposition when he isn’t hurt himself, Mitchell doesn't really hurt for the amount of pill he accumulates, how many other real weapons do they have? Lucky they have Clarko, that will probably account for half their wins alone.
16. Aside from Hawthorn's third flag, most premiers are boosted by getting off to great starts. The fixture heavily influences that. It’s what quells Collingwood's overdue rise back up the ladder, they'll be lucky to be 3-3 at best, but Port should be at worst 5-2 going into the Round 8 Showdown with the Suns in China to follow. Get on.
17. Another one on the AFL… why are we playing the AFLW Grand Final squeezed into a lunchtime in the middle of Round One when had they moved their season one week earlier the pinnacle match could have had a clear weekend from the men’s game, all to themselves? One thing to make a dumb decision but especially at the expense of an outstanding alternative?
18. Brownlow pick? Well it has to be Fyfe. If you want a smokey, Matt Crouch at $34 provides lovely value.
19. Rising Star? Andrew Brayshaw ($15) from Paddy Dow ($9) in a close one-two finish. Some value would be Sam Murray ($21) at Collingwood, should play 22 games and will average 20 touches a week.
20. And the final eight, here’s what we’ve settled on: GWS, Adelaide, Richmond, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Essendon, Sydney, Geelong

Two Heads are Deader Than One (Eddie Shoes Mystery) Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series Camel Press (April 15, 2017) Paperback: 286 pages ISBN-13: 978-1603813136
Private Investigator Eddie Shoes is enjoying a rare period of calm. She’s less lonely now that Chava, her card-counting mom from Vegas, is sharing her home. She also has a new companion, Franklin, a giant dog of curious ancestry.
Hoping for a lucrative new case, Eddie instead finds herself taking on a less promising client: her best friend from her childhood in Spokane. Dakota has turned up in Bellingham in jail, where she is being held on a weapons charge. Eddie reluctantly agrees not only to lend her friend money for bail but to also investigate who is stalking her. Soon after Dakota is freed, she disappears again, leaving Eddie to answer to the local cops, including her ex-boyfriend Chance Parker. Has Dakota been kidnapped? If not, why did she jump bail? What are Eddie’s business cards doing on the bodies of two murder victims?
Character Interview With Eddie Shoes
You dropped out of high school and then traveled a bit before you ended up in Bellingham. What kind of places did you go to?
For the most part, I stayed on the West Coast. I went as far south as San Diego, but realized very quickly that wasn’t for me. I enjoyed the beach a great deal, but that wasn’t going to be enough to keep me there. I had a great little apartment for one summer on the water in Ocean Beach, a neighborhood full of tattoo parlors, motorcycle shops, and bars. I loved the community, but it felt like I was melting away with all that sun. So come September, I worked my way north. I’d come into a new place, find a job, and earn enough to move on. I stopped in Goleta, just north of Santa Barbara. I worked in Solvang and Lompoc, and no, not at the prison if that’s what you’re wondering. Then I made my way through Oregon. Medford, Klamath Falls, The Dalles. After working in smaller towns, doing everything from picking grapes at a vineyard to night watchperson at a mostly empty mall, I decided I should give a bigger city a try. I got to Seattle and settled in. I met my mentor, Benjamin Cooper, who taught me everything I know about being a private investigator, and a lot about life in general. I stayed there until he died. From there I moved to Bellingham, and the rest, as they say, is history.
What do you feel were some of the biggest takeaways from those travels?
I confirmed I can take care of myself. That there’s work if you’re willing to get your hands dirty. That having brown skin can make people have assumptions about who I am and what my story is. It taught me not to make assumptions of my own when I meet a new person. We’ve all got stories, and some of them would surprise other people if they knew about them. I read a quote once, that said something like “everyone has troubles you don’t know about, so be kind.” After moving to so many different communities, that stayed with me. We’ve all got difficult things to overcome, so we should treat people with kindness, have a little compassion if someone else is having a bad day. It also taught me I’m very comfortable picking up and starting over. There’s a certain kind of freedom in that. It can also be an easy out. If things get difficult, to just leave. It’s harder, in some ways, to stick things out and put down roots. I’m trying that now and I think it’s going to be worth it. Ask me in a year and I’ll let you know.
Any particular fond memories from those times?
I had a morning on the coast of Oregon, when the gray whale migration was going on. It was late March, so they were heading north for the summer. I sat on a promontory over the ocean and watched these massive beasts cruising past. It made me feel small, but in a good way, like I was part of something larger. I always loved the first day I arrived somewhere new and the day I left. The sense of starting something, being new in town or heading out is a feeling I almost always enjoy. That changed when I left Seattle and moved to Bellingham. Leaving Seattle was the first time I experienced the grief of losing someone important to me in such a permanent way. I guess you could say, that was the first time I fled instead of left, if you understand the difference. I remember mornings, driving onto a half-empty highway, the sun just barely breaking the horizon line, the radio on in my old Subaru. My heart would soar with the endless possibilities of what lay ahead of me. When you’re tethered by family, friends, responsibilities, that’s not something you experience in the same way. I wouldn’t trade my rootless years for anything. Though I feel pretty good about where I am now.
Anything that particularly surprised you?
Did you know you can manufacture a fan belt out of a pair of pantyhose? I was broken down at a rest stop, my fan belt had given up the ghost and I was trying to figure out what to do. An older couple in an RV was nearby walking their little white dog. They came over to see what the problem was, I had my hood up in the universal signal for “help,” and when I told them, they solved the problem for me. She had a pair of nylons in her suitcase, which she’d brought along to wear to church on Sundays, when they found one on their journey. We cut one leg off the pantyhose and tied that around the pulleys as tight as we could and it worked. I couldn’t believe it. I drove all the way to the closest auto parts store, about twenty miles away, and got a replacement. They even followed me to make sure I got there safe and sound. We probably didn’t have anything in common, except we were at the same rest stop at the same time and they could help out a stranger. That surprised me throughout my trip, the kindness of strangers.
Did you ever, at any point, miss home or were you always happy just to be away?
I didn’t miss “home” per se. I enjoyed growing up in Spokane, but I didn’t feel sad about leaving it. I did feel sad about being away from my mom sometimes. I’d wish we were closer. She’d moved to Las Vegas and was having a life of her own, for the first time in her life as an adult, since she was only sixteen when she had me. Sometimes I’d wish she’d call and ask me to come stay with her. But that never lasted very long. I wouldn’t have wanted to live in Las Vegas, way too hot for me! and we might not have gotten along very well. I think everything worked out great, she’s staying with me now at a time when we’re both ready for it.
It’s been a pleasure talking with you.
About The Author
After twenty years in the theater, Elena Hartwell turned her dramatic skills to fiction. Her first novel, One Dead, Two to Go introduces Eddie Shoes, private eye. Called “the most fun detective since Richard Castle stumbled into the 12th precinct,” by author Peter Clines, I’DTale Magazine stated, “this quirky combination of a mother-daughter reunion turned crime-fighting duo will captivate readers.”
In addition to her work as a novelist, Elena teaches playwriting at Bellevue College and tours the country to lead writing workshops.
When she’s not writing or teaching, her favorite place to be is at the farm with her horses, Jasper and Radar, or at her home, on the middle fork of the Snoqualmie River in North Bend, Washington, with her husband, their dog, Polar, and their trio of cats, Jackson, Coal Train, and Luna, aka, “the other cat upstairs.” Elena holds a B.A. from the University of San Diego, a M.Ed. from the University of Washington, Tacoma, and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.

JEFF STEINBERG: CHAMPION OF EARTH
JOSHUA HALE FIALKOV (W) • TONY FLEECS (W/A/CA) • LUIGI ANDERSON (C/CA)
Have you ever wondered what could have been if Kevin Smith directed Men in Black? Us either because that’s kind of a dumb thing to wonder. Besides, why obsess about “What ifs?” when you could be reading the defining sci-fi-rom-com-dram-actioner of our time! From the writer of The Bunker and the artist of My Little Pony—wait, really? Okay, I guess we’ll go with it—comes an alien invasion the likes of which have never before been seen by human eyes.
The space invaders are real. They’re here. They’re mean. And they’re standing in judgement over the citizens of Earth. The human race’s final exam. They’ve chosen a single champion to test and, unfortunately for us, it’s none other than Jeff Steinberg. Romantically challenged idiot, video store clerk, constipated, confused, distractible. In other words, the planet is totally doomed.

NCAA Tournament 2017: The best and worst of everything from Sweet 16 Thursday
The madness is back, and now we know that it’s going to give us at least one team making its Final Four debut.
The first week of the NCAA tournament is sort of like being held captive in the best prison in the world. For four straight days you have little contact with the outside world, you forget that grass is green and the sky is blue, but you know how many points that little kid from Mount St. Mary’s put on Villanova.
Then, suddenly, it’s gone. For truly institutionalized hoops junkies, getting re-acclimated with “the real world” goes about as well as it did for Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption. A little better, but not much.
Finally, Thursday returns and so does our reservation at the March Madness prison. The stay is never as long or as involved as it was the week before, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less pleasurable.
Here are all the best and worst things that the return of the NCAA tournament gave us on Thursday.
Best Game
(11) Xavier 73, (2) Arizona 71 (West)
This was supposed to be the biggest mismatch of not just Thursday, but of the entire Sweet 16. Xavier was a team that had lost its best player to injury and then lost six straight games before beating DePaul both in its regular season finale and in the first game of the Big East tournament. If the Musketeers lose either of those games, they probably aren’t even in the field of 68. Arizona, meanwhile, rolled to the Pac-12 tournament title and had been the American public’s runaway favorite to make it out of the West Region since the moment the brackets were unveiled.
None of that mattered on Thursday, as Trevon Bluiett dropped a game-high 25 points to lead Xavier to a stunning 73-71 win in which the Musketeers scored the game’s final nine points. With his team owning possession and just 50 seconds to play, Chris Mack correctly went 2-for-1 and got a Sean O’Mara bucket off a great feed from Bluiett. After a Kadeem Allen miss on the other end and an O’Mara miss on the front end of a 1-and-1, Arizona had one final shot to tie or take the lead. Allonzo Trier’s potential game-winner went in and out.
The remarkable thing about Xavier’s run isn’t just that they’re doing it as an 11 seed, it’s that they’re doing it in a season where Myles Davis left the team and star Edmond Sumner was lost for the season with an ACL tear. No team is supposed to be able to stand up after a pair of body blows like that, and yet here Xavier is.
The flip side of this is that Sean Miller now retains his title of college basketball’s best coach to never make a Final Four. It’ll happen, but so will an increase in restlessness amongst his fan base until it does.
Team That Won It Best
Kansas
Just when you think the Jayhawks’ train of destruction in this tournament is about to screech to slow down, it picks up even more momentum. At the 16 minute mark of the second half, Purdue had the ball and trailed Kansas by just two points. The Jayhawks outscored them 45-15 from that point on.
Frank Mason may have locked up national Player of the Year honors on Thursday by dropping 26 points, seven assists and seven rebounds on a Purdue team that features fellow candidate Caleb Swanigan. While Mason was tremendous, it continues to be the increasingly stellar play of do-it-all freshman Josh Jackson that has made KU so terrifying for the last two weeks. Jackson scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and made four steals on Thursday night.
There’s no guarantee that Kansas is 10 days away from winning a national title, but there’s no doubt that through two and-a-half rounds of play, they’ve been the most impressive team in this tournament.
Team That Was The Biggest Disappointment
Arizona
Purdue lost by 32, yes, but Arizona was the biggest favorite of any team in this round, and one of the biggest favorites overall to cut down the nets in Phoenix. For them not to take advantage of what had already become the weaker side of the bracket only makes their upset loss that much more difficult to swallow for ‘Zona fans.
It doesn’t matter how good or bad Xavier has been in recent weeks or what their seed was, Arizona was up seven in this game with a minute to play. Regardless of the opponent, the Wildcats have to seal the deal in that situation. Instead, they didn’t score another point and their Final Four drought will last into at least 2018.
All-Sweet 16 Thursday Team
Frank Mason, Kansas
The national POY front-runner proved why on Thursday, leading Kansas’ blowout of Purdue by scoring 26 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier
Bluiett is quietly on the type of March tear that could wind up making him an NCAA tournament legend when all’s said and done. He scored a game-high 25 points in Xavier’s upset of Arizona.
Derrick Walton Jr., Michigan
The above statement could have also been true for Walton had his final attempt Thursday night gone about three inches farther. He still finished his final game of the season with 20 points and eight assists.
Tyler Dorsey, Oregon
Dorsey has now scored 20 or points in each of Oregon’s last six games. The points that got him to the mark on Thursday were also the two that won the game for the Ducks.
Allonzo Trier, Arizona
Like Walton, Trier’s final shot not finding the bottom of the net ruined what had been an otherwise stellar performance. He finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, and scored 15 straight for the Wildcats at one point during the second half.
Three Thursday Cheers
1. A guaranteed surprise finalist
After Thursday’s action, one of these six teams is guaranteed to play in the national championship game a week from Monday:
Gonzaga Xavier Baylor South Carolina Florida Wisconsin
It’s a list of names that features a healthy combination of good teams representing programs that people typically view as less than Final Four caliber, and respected programs who fielded teams that weren’t supposed to be able to do this in this particular season.
No Duke, no Villanova, no Arizona, and I’m good with it. We’re now virtually guaranteed to have an “everybody doubted us” story in some form heading into the title game, which is cool.
We also get a regional final featuring two teams looking to go to their first Final Four (Gonzaga and Xavier) for the first time since 1999. Ironically enough, that game was Gonzaga vs. Florida and was the first of the Bulldogs’ now 19 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
2. Chris Webber’s clapping and berating of officials
Look, Chris Webber flubbed a decent amount of word and calls during the broadcast of Gonzaga/ West Virginia Thursday night. I heard them. It’s cool.
Why is is cool? Because Webber also spent seven straight minutes ripping officials who inexplicably took that long to review an obvious call, and then when did the same to an official’s face when he came over to try and explain the situation. All of this happened on live TV, mind you. Also happening on live TV was Webber openly clapping after a crazy sequence which ended in Gonzaga’s Jordan Matthews burying the biggest shot of the game.

Keep doing you, C-Webb.
3. A double-digit seed still dancing
Xavier’s not your typical 11 seed, but it’s always nice to have a double-digit seed still dancing on one of the final two days of regional play. The Musketeers are now the seventh 11 seed to advance to the Elite 8, and there’s a little bit of positive history on their side.
The previous six 11 seeds to make a regional final have all squared off against No. 1 seeds, and three of them have won those games and advanced to the Final Four. You’ll take that stat if you’re a Xavier fan gearing up to see your team take on top-seeded Gonzaga on Saturday.
Three Thursday Jeers
1. West Virginia’s final possession
I just ... I ... why didn’t they ....... what is this?
You need to see the whole thing, and you need to see it sped up and set to Yakety Sax.

— Timothy Burke (@bubbaprog) March 24, 2017
It was a fitting ending to what was a competitive Sweet 16 game, but one which had an unhealthy ratio of whistles to exciting moments.
2. The end of the Michigan storyline
People will be talking about Michigan’s memorable March for years to come, but the story will always end in the Sweet 16. It didn’t look like that was going to be the case for a healthy chunk of the night on Thursday, but Oregon made all the plays the Wolverines couldn’t in the game’s final minutes to ensure that it would be.
3. The missed dunk trend rolls into week two
The three-day break didn’t change anything.
Add Jordan Bell to the list.
Best Thursday Dunk
Kansas’ Lagerald Vick threw down a dang 360 in the middle of a Sweet 16 game.

Best Quote
“First of all, I don’t know that I have a monkey on my back. I don’t wake up with one or walk around with one. I don’t think these guys think I have one, I don’t think my wife thinks I have one, or anybody in my family. Close friends. Fishing buddies never talk about it. So those are the only people that really matter to me. It would be phenomenal to get these guys, this team that I love deeply, the experience to go to a Final Four. It would be phenomenal to give that satisfaction to all the players I’ve been lucky enough to coach, and to give it to a university that has treated me so incredibly well. And to Spokane, which has been such an unbelievable community for us to have our program. But it’s not about me and my monkeys and my dogs and my cats. It’s about them.”
—Gonzaga coach Mark Few when asked about ‘getting the monkey off his back’ and potentially making a Final Four
