Rick Pidcock at Baptist News Global:
Growing up as an independent fundamentalist Baptist, the highlight of each year for our church was the weeklong revival meeting, where we began each night with songs that prepared our hearts for a sermon by a fiery evangelist who then gave an altar call to get us to commit our lives to the cause. So, imagine if that same formula were applied to the 2024 election by a group of conspiracy theorists who openly admitted their plan was to be a “Trojan Horse” at polling stations in order to “make history this November.”
What might the worship look like? What would the sermon be about? What would the altar call be for? And how concerned should the rest of us be? Unfortunately, we don’t have to imagine because that’s exactly what is happening at The Courage Tour, which is branded as a “revival in seven key states … marking the dawn of our nation’s Third Great Awakening.” The Courage Tour has been organized by Lance Wallnau, an independent charismatic apostle who is popular in the New Apostolic Reformation and a promoter of the Seven Mountain Mandate call for Christians to dominate every part of society. According to Matthew Taylor, author of The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement That Is Threatening Our Democracy, Wallnau is “Donald Trump’s most effective spiritual propagandist.” In addition to Wallnau, the Courage Tour also features speakers such as Lou Engle, Allen West, Marjorie Taylor Greene and many others. Meetings this year have targeted Michigan, Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin, with additional swing states slated in the coming months.
[...]
The sermon
With hearts prepared to celebrate kingship, resistance to demons, a God who fights, victory and enemies drowning, the worshipers listened to the likes of Wallnau, who took the stage with the power and authority of a traveling evangelist.
The promo video includes clips of speakers saying:
America is under a spirit of delusion.
America has abandoned God.
Women are being used as pawns, which is exactly what the Left does.
We’ve given the keys to our church to the government and said: “Government, you run this church. You make the decisions for me.”
When we vacate the public square and leave that to chance, something fills the void.
When liberty hangs in the balance, and your children, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews come to you and they say, “Where were you when tyranny knocked on our door,” what are you going to tell them?
What’s it actually going to take? Seriously, what kind of trigger point will cause the church just to come out of this zombie stupor and say: “OK that’s it. I’ve had it”?
The church shouldn’t be in a bunker waiting on the rapture, but it ought to be invading the mountains of influence for the glory of God.
We have to save our nation. We have to save our children.
We don’t have the luxury of disunity.
Fighting for liberty and freedom is difficult. It is hard. Choose your hard.
When the mothers suddenly see and perceive the organized threat against their little boys and their little girls, then they will rise up.
You’ve got a nation to save. You’ve got grandchildren to save.
Remember, those are the comments they were willing to highlight in their promo video. One wonders what may have been said they weren’t willing to highlight.
Common themes include spreading conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection. At one of the events, Wallnau said: “January 6 was not an insurrection. It was an election fraud intervention.”
[...]
The ‘Lion of Judah’ election workers
But perhaps the most concerning call to action at the Courage Tour is their recruitment of election workers through Lion of Judah, an organization that assists Christians to register as election workers with a cause. “Just imagine. It’s election night. Chaos is happening. The polls are closing. They go and the volunteers are getting kicked out,” Lion of Judah’s founder Joshua Caleb Standifer told the Courage Tour crowd. “But what if we had Christians across America and swing states like Wisconsin that were actually the ones counting the votes and making sure it was happening?” Lion of Judah is composed of election deniers who say, “What happened in 2020 can never happen again!” This is precisely why they were so popular at the Courage Tour. Taylor noted, “I was present throughout the Courage Tour event on Monday, and it was rife with 2020 election denialism from the stage, in conversations among attendees and in the literature at the booths.”
Rick Pidcock writes for Baptist News that far-right election denial and conspiracy theories linked to Christian nationalism are a big concern, such as The Lion Of Judah outfit whose goal is recruitment of election workers in support of subverting fair elections.

Big Mama's Chinese Roots and a Connection to Tang Shen?
First off, to preface... this whole thing started because @caro-rolo figured out that the Mystic Portal Key doohickeys in Rise are actually just some kind of fancy compasses that have North, South, East, and West written in Chinese characters.
Now, the first thought I had to learning this was "Tang Shen" because in the TMNT universe where Japanese influence is pretty heavy, she is notable for having a Chinese name.
She is also the love interest of Hamato Yoshi in many different variations. Though in Rise, that role belongs most notably to Big Mama, with Tang Shen being a blink and you miss it easter-egg credit on the cover of Jistu for Justice:
Mama is also most likely the source of where Splinter got his mystic portal key, and she even has one of her own in her office. Judging by how much control she has over the Hidden City, from the Battle Nexus, to demolition derbies, to train stations, to crime rings, she seems to have a large control over just who all is in her city, and these keys could very well be something she controls directly.
Now, Big Mama has all the set ups for having typical TMNT Japanese roots. Even her home estate seen in "Hidden City Job" has a very Asian look to it inside and out:
Plus, the whole "her being a yokai", makes it easy to assume she is based on some kind of Japanese spider demon like Jorōgumo, Yatsukahagi/Tsuchigumo, or Ōgumo, etc.
But "Yokai" can also be used to describe the Chinese term "yaoguai" which is basically the same definition.
So if Mama were a Chinese spider demon instead, the first one who comes up on a quick Google search is "zhī zhū jīng" or "spider woman". These are 7 spider demon sisters who fight Sun Wukong in Monkey King: Journey to the West.
Here, the spiders changed into seven beautiful young ladies who wanted to eat the flesh of Sun Wukong's master, Tang Seng, which is said to make the consumer immortal and forever young.
"Tang Seng"... "Tang Shen"... sounds pretty similar.
And aren't there also some animation ties from ROTTMNT to Lego Monkey King? Tangent side note, but there's a spider demon queen in that universe too and guess what? SHE'S PURPLE!
And where did Mama and Lou Jistsu first meet? On set of one of his movies "Crouching Shrimp Hidden Tiger Prawn" in 1984. A movie where an actress like Tang Shen could very well have ties to? (We'll come back to this at the end.)
Another chip in the Chinese vs Japanese bucket is Big Mama's Security Team:
At first, I thought their distinct faces represented Blue Japanese Hannya/ Oni masks, but what if they're supposed to be Chinese Nuo masks instead? Not unlike Zuko's Blue Spirit mask in ATLA.
You could also argue these guys are wielding a sort of Qinglong Ji or Fangtian Ji, which are Chinese spear or polearm weapons. (But if anyone knows what those spear thingies are really called, please let me know, it's driving me nuts!)
...
In conclusion, I got sent on a massive rabbit hole because of a fictional compass and regret nothing! 🧭
Now what is Big Mama's connection to Tang Shen? Are they related? (The actress does look a bit purple.) They could be sisters like the 7 sisters of the Monkey King lore. Did Mama seek to get rid of Tang Shen so she could get closer to Lou Jitsu herself? Are they the same person? Is Big Mama based on Japanese or Chinese folklore? Did any of this make any sense at all?
Let me know what you think, and thanks for joining me for another deep dive into another one of my random ROTTMNT theories!
EDIT: (PS- Sorry, if the "read more" messes the order of these up, but the scroll was annoying me in my own tags.) 😅

MASH or West Wing!
ooh thank you! low key wanting to do both here haha
The West Wing
The first character I first fell in love with: CJ Cregg. From that first pratfall... <3 The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Bruno Gianelli! (Does he count? I know he's not a main). At first I thought he was a huge sleaze, but by my first rewatch, every time he was onscreen I'm like Bruno! Bruno, my best friend Bruno!!! The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I am... not overly fond of Annabeth. The character I love that everyone else hates: I do not think that Will Bailey ruined The West Wing. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Joshua Malina on the other hand... I don't actually know if any character fits, really? I don't have a very high opinion of Toby... 😬 but I don't dislike him? The character I would totally smooch: CJ. Danny. Matthew Santos. Lou Thornton. Helen Santos. Simon Donovan. etc. The character I’d want to be like: CJ, unquestionably. The character I’d slap: Hutchinson! A pairing that I love: CJ/Danny!!!!! A pairing that I despise: 'despise' is a strong word but... really really get icked out by Leo/Annabeth!
M*A*S*H
The first character I first fell in love with: Probably Hawkeye. Though catching it on reruns, I loved Max. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Charles. Used to think he was a funky cool dude but... The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Mulcahy, but only because it's like "I've seen enough of this dude", he's just everywhere. And my true Unpopular Opinion... i don't like Sidney. I think he's overrated. The character I love that everyone else hates: Peg? Idk. Are there characters people who aren't in facebook groups hate? The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Mulcahy. He was one of my faves on the first watch through. The character I would totally smooch: BJ, incredibly so. The character I’d want to be like: A combination of all of them, actually. The character I’d slap: 🤔 dope slapping Potter sounds fun. A pairing that I love: Punnihawk! A pairing that I despise: ... again, 'despise' is a strong word, and I support everyone shipping what they want, but I don't like Hawkeye/Mulcahy. There are more, but I don't fancy getting yelled at today lol

What is History? History is the systematic study and documentation of the human past. For Instance, my name is Anthony Joseph Hopkins and I was born on Thursday June 24, 1965 at 7:30pm. My mother's name is Mary Lou's Hopkins and my father's name is Joseph Odell Webb. The hospital that I was born was St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio.

Next, I was living at the time with my two living grandmothers and aunt inside of a two bedroom house on West First Street in Dayton, Ohio. I remember when I was a child, I lived with my grandparents for several years. I went to Edison Elementary School. I want all of you to know that I was only a C average student. I attended Edison Elementary School from 1971-1979. I attended Franklin School for one year.
Further, I was a child who has experienced both physically and mentally as well as emotional abuse. I have five brothers and two sisters right now. I do recall getting chased home by my fair weather friends. During that period of my life, I do remember suffering from tuberculosis for nine years from 1976 to 1985. I had to take Ciphro Flacin twice per day for several years.
Moreover, I do remember watching television when President Richard Nixon resigned from government and the Vietnam War on television as well. Personally, I would rather be in school or my grandparents house instead of my mother's house. I went to school and I got into fist fights with various people for several years. I do recall spending time with my half siblings. I was a latch key child for several years.
Also, I used to have problems with math. I did very well in my other classes. I do remember going to school just to eat breakfast and lunch only. Jesus Christ is my personal Savior. I have waivered in my faith in God. My personal history was rough. I was an extrovert and an introvert at the same time. I remember working for the Dayton Daily Newspaper Company for four years.
In Addition, I used to have bad teeth as a child and adult. I took better care of myself back then compared to right now. I had a lot of structure during that time. I am going to say this and mean it. I really need structure in my life right now. I want to say that I am a procrastinator. I am not a lazy person, but I tend to become complaisant. My history consists of playing sports. I played basketball with the YMCA for four years.
Currently, I have written three books for many years. My first book is called The Best of Anthony Hopkins. I wrote that book back in July of 2000. I have published two books with Authorhouse Publications. My second book is called My Grace is Sufficient for Me and my most recent book is called Essays. My books consists of essays that I have written based on my relationship with God.
In my personal life, I have been in and out of mental health institutions. For the past 26 years, I have suffered from Schizoid Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia. I am guilty of spending too much time by myself. For the past 29 years, I lost my great grandmother. As soon as I saw her inside of a casket, I lost my mind. I new that she was not coming back to life. I lost my family members and I am devastated. I will admit that I have been hearing voices from people from my past.
Finally, I am a 58 years old now and I am very depressed. I write a lot about my personal life. I rarely have visitors coming over my apartment. I want to inform all of you that my life is very important to me. I do remember on Saturday February 13, 2010, I tried to kill myself by taking all of my pills at one time. I almost died during that time. I will admit that I suffer from seizures. I have been suffering from seizures for 41 years now. I understand that a person relationship with God is more important than death itself. I graduated from High School and College at Paul Laurence Dunbar on Tuesday June 10, 1986 and I graduated twice from the University of Toledo in 1993 & 1995. I do remember living in Toledo, Ohio and Charlotte NC. I remember working at the University of Toledo from 1992-1996. I worked at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 2001-2009. I have maintained a Counselor Assistant License from 1993-2010. I have had a good career as a Youth Counselor from 1993-1996.
In Conclusion, I am a very intelligent man who has a lot of common sense. I am a person who has a lot of friends. I have both good friends and bad ones. I am losing my eyesight because I have suffered from glaucoma and cataracts from 2005-present. I have suffered from Diabetes from 2015-present. I have suffered from Schizoid Affective Disorder from 1997-present. My history is not glamorous. I am just an average person who has a lot of debt. I owe the University of North Carolina at Charlotte a total of $30,000 dollars in student loans. I live in an apartment in Northwest side of Dayton, Ohio from 2011-present. I am living on a fixed income and I am still broke financially. I have no social life right now. I have an interest in working in a library again. Please Lord Jesus, hear my prayer. I really need you in my life right now. I have been clean and sober for 33 years now. My clean date is Wednesday May 2, 1990. History consists of the things that I do for Jesus Christ. If I am able to help others and communicate with Jesus Christ on a daily basis. I need to read His Word and demonstrate His deeds to mankind. Thank you for reading my story. God Bless You All.

PRETTY AWKWARD Deliver Friends With Benefits Song ‘Woozy’
Seattle Alt.Pop band PRETTY AWKWARD sings about Friends With Benefits in their new single “Woozy”, available now. The groovy, funky track tells a story of the irresistible pull of reconnecting with an ex to fulfill a mutual need when under the influence – even though the relationship can be toxic. The band’s Austin Held says “Lyrically, ‘Woozy’ was inspired by poking fun at the kind of relationships that one can have when they’re a young, misguided adult. When you initially vibe with someone it can seem like innocent young love. But over time it can evolve into an unhealthy and intoxicating “situationship”. It’s one that our main character can’t help but keep returning to over and over again – because it feels so good in the moment”. The video for ‘Woozy’ was directed by the band’s Nicholas Wiggins and was filmed in various locations around Seattle. Held says “The storyline revolves around the misadventures of a character named Mr. Woozy and is a perfect example of how the darkest nights can lead to the brightest of dawns. We put a lot of time and energy into this and we’re really proud of the way it turned out as it’s the first music video we’ve released that’s completely DIY. We’ve had this idea of following this character (Mr Woozy) through a crazy night out on the town for a while and it’s awesome to finally see the idea brought to life. We want to thank local Seattle residents for allowing us to blast our music through the streets and thanks for clapping, we’re so grateful for your support and stoked that you enjoyed what you saw”. The band is set to release its first full length album “Get Weird” on September 1st. They are rolling out the releases with tour dates in the Northwest, with a full tour set to launch in early 2024. PRETTY AWKWARD – Tour Dates: Friday, September 1st (Album Release Show) – Madame Lou’s – Seattle, WA About PRETTY AWKWARD: The band’s Austin Held (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards) and Nicholas Wiggins (Bass, Piano) have been friends since they were young and grew up together in West Seattle. That long-time chemistry resonates throughout their music and shows their diverse musical tastes. Their sound is a mosaic of cinematic keys, delicate guitars, and clever and catchy lyrics. Being fans of all genres of music, PRETTY AWKWARD have a wide spectrum of influences ranging from Pop to Rock and Hip Hop along with EDM, resulting in familiar sounds to such artists as Twenty One Pilots, OneRepublic and Bastille. The music proves as unpredictable as it does undeniable. “We just sort of make what naturally comes out of us,” says Nicholas. “We never try to sound a certain way or do a certain thing.” Austin agrees, saying “We go all over the spectrum. “There are parts that are Alternative Rock (“Misfits”; “Bored”), but there’s an Anthemic electronic influence, too (“Higher”). You might find some hip-hop vibes in there (“Bad Habit”) and we are definitely Pop at points (“Hang Out”). In the end, PRETTY AWKWARD makes a real connection with fans by simply being themselves. They’ve being playing sold-out shows in the Northwest and throughout the West Coast since their inception. “I just hope you can relate when you listen to us,” Austin leaves off. “If somebody takes away anything, it’s this level of relatability. You can interpret these songs in so many different ways. That’s a beautiful thing. The message is breathe, relax, and chill. It might sound like a pipe dream, but what else really matters? Life should be fun. We’re here to enjoy ourselves and play music.” Nicholas adds, “We all feel a little awkward sometimes in our lives. There is beauty and growth in those moments. That’s why we are all PRETTY AWKWARD.” Read the full article

COMCAST DOWN AGAIN
The bigger Comcast gets, the poorer its service. Service in the Keys. Failed again yesterday. Internet, e-mail and television. From 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Failure of service has become a consistent pattern.
Comcast has become too big for its britches. In recent years, it purchased NBC. The company probably spends more time and is more concerned about big time NBC rather than Comcast. The Comcast I assume helped finance NBC’s purchase.
As a result of the service failure, I was not able to get the blog out. My apologies, even though not my fault.
I learned a lesson yesterday. Louis cannot live without internet and TV. I read a bit. Never the less, it was a long boring day.
Last night however made up for the day’s earlier frustrations. Partied at Andrea and Joe’s.
Donna, Terri and I were to stop by for drinks and then out to dinner. Never left Donna and Joe’s. My second Key West Julia Child had laid out a table of pickies that the best restaurant could not have topped. Everything from small pieces of meat to shrimp to dips to breads.
At one point, Andrea, Joe and I stepped outside for a cigarette. I know. Bad. While we were standing there, a car drove up. The woman in the passenger seat leaned out and started talking. It was mayoral candidate Teri Johnston.
She was campaigning. Brilliant, I thought! Teri lost the primary by one point. She failed to reach the 50 percent required to avoid a run off. Her opponent received 24 percent of the vote.
Instead of resting home secure that she would probably win in November with these numbers, Teri was out campaigning.
Andrea mentioned that Donna and Terri were inside. Teri is good friends with them. She came in.
The girls hugged and kissed. A happy mood prevailed. One of Teri’s workers walked in with a video camera. Teri, Donna and Terri were videoed while Terri was belting out a song.
Teri then left for her next stop. Another person or persons standing outside their home. By car. Smart campaigning.
Wednesday night was the Blue Macaw. Terri singing with Larry Baeder. For the first time as a paid performer at Blue Macaw. She now has a regular wednesday night gig.
Place packed. Everyone there.
Ran into Stephanie and Angie who I had met the night before.
Stephanie a daytime bartender for 17 years at Hogsbreath…..Ain’t no breath like hogs breath! Knows my friend George who also has bartended there for years.
Angie owns Crystals and Coconuts across the street. A smart shop. Exquisitely designed jewelry available.
Matthew McConaughey stopped into Crystals and Coconuts when he was filming in Key West a few months ago. A picture of the star and Angie appears on the internet of McConaughey purchasing a necklace for his daughter.
Irma had an impact on Key West in more than one way. I have lost my fourth couple friends because of Irma. Kentucky’s David and Marilyn. I received an e-mail from David advising they had sold their home around the corner from Santiago’s Bodega and returned to Kentucky.
I assume the fear of another impending storm. Scares the hell out of you. No question. I know.
David was a writer and basketball fan. I shall miss him.
Florence doing its thing. Rains and flooding big time. Two or three more days to go. Irma causes me to worry about these people.
Trump says he is ready for Florence. I hope so. I fear another Puerto Rico, however. Florence is big. The aftermath bigger. Excuses will not fly if there is failure. I expect there will be.
Does Trump know what he is doing?
The number of detained immigrant children has skyrocketed. From 2,400 in May 2017 to 12,800 this month. Causes alleged involve a reduction in release time, the number straining the children and system, and the fact that most of the children crossed the border without parents.
The last item portraying how desperate parents are to be sure their children will be safe and find a better way of life.
In the meantime, it was announced this week that Trump wants to pay Mexico $20 million to assist in resolving U.S. border problems. The Trump administration sent a Notice to Congress that it requires the $20 million in order to pay Mexico the cost of plane and bus tickets to return unauthorized immigrants in Mexico who are on their way to the U.S. The tickets are to return them home, not to the U.S.
Seventeen thousand unauthorized immigrants involved.
I have to hand it to Trump. He knows how to piss money away. Twenty five million for the wall, $20 million for plane and bus tickets.
I will be surprised if Congress gives him the money.
Syracuse/Florida State tomorrow. A Syracuse win will indicate the direction the season is taking. Florida State a 3 point favorite.
Enjoy your day!

i turned to look at him join me in the balcony.
i hardly ever let anyone stay after dawn, but today was different. i looked out onto the streets, knowing damn well i had gotten one of the best views in the town.
"you have a nice voice." he said, grinning. i blushed lightly, only then realizing that i had been absentmindedly singing a lou reed song. he reached into his back pocket, and pulled out a packet of cigarettes - parliaments. he slowly pulled one out, before holding out the box, offering one to me. i held my hand out in declination.
he lit it, and took a long, slow drag.
as the smoke puffed in the air, he sighed.
"those kill you know. you're lungs are gonna be fucked." he looked at me in surprise.
"thanks for the concern." there was a moment of silence.
"don't you have a class soon?" he asked, breaking it.
"nope, free period. i'm sure you do, though"
"i can skip it." his nonchalance was unusual for someone like me, but normal for someone like him.
i attempted to go inside, but he held me back.
"stay. it's nice outside." the statement surprised me, but i complied.
i leaned on the railing as he puffed smoke out. it was comforting, something i hadn't experienced with anyone else. we both watched as the sun came up.
time passed. god knows how long. soon enough, it was already mid-morning, and i realized he had to leave.
something in me felt sadness at the thought of him leaving, and i stayed at the balcony as he grabbed his jacket and car keys.
"y/-"
"bill-" we both started. "you can go first." i muttered, blushing.
"i... how do i say this? i don't really know." he paused. "i really liked this. i don't stay over often. today was different." i smiled.
"i feel the same." i walked up to him, and gave him a short kiss on the cheek. he smiled at me.
a real, genuine smile.
he opened the front door and walked out of the house, leaving me in a state of giddiness.

Love Locket 7: Karaoke Weekend
Mika had a family tradition with her mother and her friends to sing karaoke on the holidays. Mika had explained this tradition to the boys and upon hearing this wanted to experience karaoke. Which resulted in weekends where Mika or the boys would sing. Let's just say when people sing, you might learn more about them. Like Mika despite looking like she only liked cute songs could belt and growl when she sang metal or rock songs. Which often leads to Sam and Matthew getting hyped to shout along as well. Karaoke weekends were a toss-up between being happy-go-fun times or shouting the anger away and making the neighbors wonder if you were trying to summon demons. They just didn't realize that the house was already guarded by 5 demons.
Mika was a triple threat on the stage she could sing, she could act, and she could dance. Her only downside was that she couldn't really play well on the piano yet. But, Erik was her personal teacher. So when it came down to karaoke weekend the boys would often hand over the mic to Mika since she loved it. But, it ended up Mika would pick a song to duet with one of the boys.
Sam and Matthew where the worse singers of the group. But, Mika never put them down for it. In fact, on the weekdays she would pick songs that Sam and Matthew could at least get a decent score on the karaoke machine they had.
If Sam attempted to sing he was often flat. So Mika often chose metal, rock, rap songs which Sam could speed talk or belt the lyrics to. Since Sam had that awsome growl tone and was not afraid to let go and shout if Mika was hyping him up to it. Sam was also the quickest talker and quicker to pick up human slang. Picking up songs by Watsky or Eminem were easier for Sam than Matthew.
For Matthew, well this boy was off key. Mika often made him memorize the lyrics to really popular tik tok songs or just classic songs that people would know. Just so that Matthew could join in with her to scream along. Often Mika and Matthew would tackle songs like FAME by Abba, It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls, Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, U Can't Touch This by MC Hammer, Boom Boom Boom by Vengaboys, or Mambo Number 5 by Lou Bega. Current songs would be Born This Way by Lady Gaga, Thrift Shop by Macklemore, Gold Digger by Kanye West, Bad guy by Billie Eilish, and Montero by Lil Nas X. Of course their are other pop songs you know, but I am lazy to list them all.
Erik would teach Matthew how to sing to save his ears, but since Matthew only to entertain Mika there was no reason for him to.
Sam and Matthew would end up going to Erik on their own when Mika wasn't in school to at least learn. Since Mika often challenged Sam to have growl matches with her on some songs. While with Matthew, Mika often gave him the mic just so she could dance around. Unless he held her hand and pulled her closer.
Damien and Erik both held the natural ability to sing.
When Erik and Mika sang togther Mika often acted to the best of her ability and Erik could return the favor. With Erik and Mika it was as if the two when singing went into their own little world their voices complementing and pulling emotion into the song whether the two intended to or not. When songs ended Erik and Mika with often both breathless or teary. But, always satisfied. Erik and Mika togther was like having a free personal theater show taking you through the highs and lows of a love, argument, battle, or sadness.
Damien was very shy and required encouragement to sing which often meant Mika had to hold him while he sang. When they sang together often Mika choose happy love songs. Since Damien had a higher chance of crying during a song than Erik did. After any song Damien could usually be found in a hug with Mika or hanging around Sam. Eventually, Damien could be found singing or humming around the house. This would often meant that Mika would listen in, join in, or give him hugs. Damien wouldn't complain of affection and often just liked the feeling of comfort it gave.
James wasn't to bad, but often when he sung one mistake or off note made him upset and he would stop singing. Mika would often have to encourage him to finish the song or she would force restart it and sing with him.
Mika was a theater kid by nature despite her affinity for academic excellence. She only managed to get into acting after highschool since her dad wasn't on her back anyway more. So when she was at college she often brought musicals and scripts home meaning the boys where her partners.
When Mika wasn't around, the boys didn't often sing together. However, James, Erik, and Damien would sometimes start singing a bit of a musical they knew or from Mika that would pull some of the other boys even Sam and Matthew. Well, Sam would recite the lyrics while Matthew would hum the tune.
I forgot to mention most weekend Karaoke days were done sober. However, on a few days Mika would get tipsy or drunk until the boys had to tuck her in. The boys didn't really get drunk on human alcoholic drinks. But, Erik knew people who could get the boys drinks if need be.
If Mika asked the boys to be drunk on karaoke nights well it was definitely a sight. Sam would get drunk the fastest, then sing and unintentionally saying funny things while the song was going on. Often Drunk Sam could always be found snacking on something or in some position that made no sense. Watching Drunk Sam for to long was like watching a cartoon trying to figure out how things worked.
While, Drunk Damine was very flirty and known to dance around trying to be sexy with whatever the song was. Stopping him from removing his clothes was part of the routine, but often Drunk Damien was shirtless.
Matthew who originally would be giggly and hyper with Mika, after drinking would tone down. Drunk Matthew would be deadpan statements like "Those words are fuzzy I can't read them. I don't sound good take my turn". Matthew was often the one having to take care of his brothers when people got drunk.
James and Erik held their alcohol like champs.
Drunk James was often a whiny mess and would end up complaining about the song or life. Drunk Erik would end up glaring at the lyrics to pick it apart and find the deeper meaning to the song. Erik would sing then stop to analyze as the song went on Mika or one of the other boys would have to force him to continue. Usually if Erik or James were drunk the party was already winding down anyway and Matthew would have to put the mic away.
Welp, at the end of the day karaoke weekends were a blast. If it became drunk karaoke weekend things just got weird.

Tired of the everyday grind?
Escape is often considered a “sister series” to CBS’ Suspense, but where “radio’s outstanding theater of thrills” had sponsorship dollars to attract the biggest names in Hollywood, Escape was a sustaining series without a sponsor. Since it couldn’t rely on the likes of Cary Grant and Gregory Peck, Escape made great use of the stable of Hollywood radio players (Stacy Harris, John Dehner, Virginia Gregg, Betty Lou Gerson, Parley Baer, Frank Lovejoy, and more). Radio legends William Conrad and Paul Frees were regularly heard in dramatic roles, and - as “the voice of Escape” - they also lent their voices to the ominous opening lines of each week’s show. Occasionally the show landed a big name and made the most of it. The best example of this may be Vincent Price starring in the chilling tale of ravenous rats “Three Skeleton Key.”
For much of the run, Escape was produced and directed by Norman Macdonnell, the man behind The Adventures of Philip Marlowe and Gunsmoke. Also at the helm was William N. Robson, who would go on to run Suspense in the late 1950s.
In honor of the anniversary of its July 7, 1947 premiere broadcast, here are some of my favorite episodes of Escape - examples of its variety of stories and why it still holds up as a taut, exciting adventure series so many years later.
“The Most Dangerous Game” - Richard Connell’s short story of a deranged hunter who preys on men has been filmed and retold many times over the years, including several radio adaptations. This version casts two radio legends and iconic voices. Paul Frees is the narrator and quarry of Hans Conried’s legendary - but bored - hunter and pits one man against the other in a deadly exotic jungle. (Originally aired on CBS on October 1, 1947)
“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” - Another classic short story, this one by Ambrose Bierce, gets a memorable adaptation courtesy of Escape. A Confederate sympathizer tries to sabotage a bridge and ends up at the end of a Union noose. A twist of fate gives him a chance to escape…or does it? There are some problematic racial portrayals (a scene where the protagonist meets one of his slaves is particularly rough), but overall this is a great show with a cast of some of radio’s best voices - Harry Bartell, Bill Johnstone, William Conrad, and Frank Lovejoy. (Originally aired on CBS on December 10, 1947)
“Leiningen vs. the Ants” - A South American plantation owner refuses to run when an army of ravenous ants descends upon his homestead. The great William Conrad shines as the titular Leiningen - a man supremely confident in his dominance over nature. Lou Merrill is the government official who tries to persuade Leiningen to leave and later decides to stay and watch this titanic battle unfold. It’s a great example of the power of radio - the horde of ants comes to vivid life with only the narration and sound patterns. (Originally aired on CBS on January 14, 1948)
“Red Wine” - Jeff Chandler stars as a detective who travels to Borneo in search of a murderer. He finds several possible suspects working on a rubber plantation, and he’ll have to get creative to unmask the killer. (Originally aired on CBS on February 26, 1949)
“A Shipment of Mute Fate” - The passengers and crew of an ocean liner at sea have no place to hide when a deadly poisonous snake escapes from its case and stalks the ship. This classic thriller was performed several times on Escape; all of the versions are worth a listen, but this one features John Lund - a rare example of a big name starring in the show. (Originally aired on CBS on March 13, 1949)
“Three Skeleton Key” - One of the scariest old time radio dramas of all time, “Three Skeleton Key” features amazing performances and sound effects that will make your skin crawl. Vincent Price stars as a lighthouse keeper on a remote island. The daily bored existence of Price and his comrades is shattered when a derelict ship runs around and its passengers - thousands of carnivorous and very hungry rats - emerge with an appetite. Wine corks against glass create the illusion of gnawing rats, and your imagination does the rest to keep you on the edge of your seat. (Originally aired on CBS on March 17, 1950)
“The Time Machine” - H.G. Wells’ science fiction classic follows an inventor and his friend as they take a jaunt 100,000 years into the future. John Dehner and Larry Dobkin star in this adventure through time itself. (Originally aired on CBS on October 22, 1950)
“Earth Abides” - This two-part drama is hailed by many as the best story Escape ever produced. Adapted from George Stewart’s novel of the same name, it’s the story of a post-apocalyptic world following the outbreak of a deadly plague. Stephen King cited the story as an inspiration for his own post-apocalyptic epic The Stand. (Part One originally aired on CBS on November 5, 1950; Part 2 originally aired on CBS on November 12, 1950)
“Wild Jack Rhett” - John Meston adapted Ernest Haycox’s story of the old west, and it wound up being a test run for Gunsmoke for Meston and director Norman Macdonnell. John Dehner stars as an infamous gunfighter and “town tamer” hired to clean up the town of Red Mesa after its sheriff is gunned down. It’s an atmospheric adult western with great performances, and its influence can be felt on Gunsmoke which would launch less than two years later. (Originally aired on CBS on December 17, 1950)
“The Abominable Snowman” - William Conrad stars in this tale of adventurers who climb into the Himalayas to hunt for the legendary yeti. It’s a chilling (no pun intended) story as the men fight to survive in the snow and the hellish storm - never knowing for sure if they’re being stalked by their monstrous quarry. (Originally aired on CBS on September 13, 1953)
