When writing characters and giving them depth, I like to use a little method I was given a few years ago—write a mock “Q&A” bit with your character and see how they’d react to certain questions.

So here’s my “Q&A” with Donel Hawkfeather, the bard. (Bolder text is the “interviewer.”)

So Donel, where are you from exactly?

-Ah! Quite the question actually. I was born in a small hamlet you’re to have never heard of near a good school of mages and magical arts…which you’re also to have never heard of. Ay.

Ah! but my most recent “home” that I’d claim was in the grand city Malgar, formerly under management of a cult of Necromancers and freed, in part, by yours truly. It was there, in my quarters in the castle, that my study into the arcane lead to my banishment into this lovely realm.

Indeed. Well, next question: when and how did you decide to become a bard?

-Hmm, now that… that’s actually a simple story, come to think of it. I was about 13, I believe, when an older bardic chap by the name of Alvius Aria came by our village and did some performances outside the tavern. The one tavern in town, mind you! But his words and music hit so deeply into my soul I couldn’t help but sing quietly to his tune. It was…enrapturing!

My parents would never approve of it, thought I. But to be a wandering minstrel wooing whomever I please, letting my words become power the moment they leave my mouth…Ah! did it strike a chord (if you’ll forgive the pun) for me! I worked hard to conceal my desire as well as to prepare funds to apply to the bardic college of that local mage’s school I mentioned was nearby. And it has certainly been worth it, if I do say so myself.

Hmmm, quite. Now tell us, you have a few disguises you use, which are your favorites?

-Oh, I thought that’d be obvious. My “Old Hawkfeather” is my go-to! He’s what I imagine myself to be in, oh, many decades from now. He was also my first passable disguise, and the one I’ve used most often. Who would suspect that Donel, son of the local—ah, um, well, “community busybodies” was no more than lost to some errant questing rather than, “ooh shudder—a bard!” And that bard that just came through town today, he’s an older chap and certainly wouldn’t have any inkling of any young whippersnappers lost to adventuring beyond what’s in his songs!

Would you say you have any disguises that you dislike?

-Well, no, of course not! I mean, if I don’t like a disguise, I simply don’t develop or use it. However…there was one time that I had to dress as a woman (a maid specifically) in order to infiltrate a fine party wherein a certain duke was planned to be murdered. I don’t know about some individuals, but I found it most unpleasant. I may not be the strictest definition of “manliness,” but the maid costume and performance…shudder…not me.

Perhaps going along that vein, many people would like to know how you identify? If you don’t mind the question. As a person, romantically…?

-Oh! Yes! No problems there at all! I am a half-elven man who finds both men and women attractive. However, I find most men to be boorish lunks with nothing more than, um, attractive features, you could say.

No, women are far more to my desires, and that’s not to be objectifying! Women are amazing! Take Elowina for example: she’s got gorgeous eyes, the strength necessary to crack a skull bare-handed and the ability to drink most anyone under a table and come out with little more than a short hangover! Truly inspiring and, dare I say, enamoring. Don’t tell her I said any of that though! I want to live.

going insane thinking about the harrow and palamedes friendship. harrow, who has never met another necromancer her age forming a bizarro 3D chess rivalry while pal worries about her safety at every possible turn. harrow, who is up to her eyebrows in paranoia and secrecy, trusting the sixth house with gideon unconscious and hurt, letting them into the ninth house quarters unsupervised. if “i cannot conceive of a universe without you in it” is goth for i love you, “death first to vultures and scavengers” has got to be goth for i love you (platonic). pal’s first reaction when harrow comes into his bubble in the river is to scoop her up in a hug, and at this point she doesn’t remember anything about him because cutting out all her memories of gideon is impossible without cutting out memories of the sixth, but she still makes him a skelehand to inhabit anyway. when harrow’s memories are finally whole, she tells dulcinea she couldn’t face pal knowing that his pen pal girlfriend died on her account, but the next time she “faces” him, palamades’s soul is in someone else’s body and harrow’s body is full of nona’s soul. he spends six months protecting and caring for harrow’s body (and nona obv), believing in the possibility of bringing her back to it the same way cam believed in him. “god, do you know i miss harrow terribly.” and by the time harrow comes back to her body at the very end of ntn, pal is gone forever, fully pauled. the last time harrow and palamades see each other as their complete selves is in canaan house, alive and unlyctored. two of the smartest and loneliest people in the solar system meet each other in the worst of circumstances and spend the rest of the story dancing around each other as fragments of themselves, trying to care about each other in the interim but never fully meeting like they did the first time. a friendship made almost entirely of missing the other person. “do you know i miss harrow terribly.” god. i need to lie down

The contradictions in Eddie Diaz have sucked me in, I'll admit. He gives great insightful life and love advice that he takes none of. He's former Texan army with a silver star— an all American hero — but only enlisted to run from his responsibilities. He's a Paramedic who joined Fight Club. A self-sacrificing single father who somehow leads a double life as a high roller. He has to be dragged into any new romance kicking and bitching but once there will pleasantly play house (right up until he does something dramatic to blow it all up). He obviously has commitment issues but has no problem emotionally and legally committing to his best friend. He doesn't believe in religious indoctrination or the supernatural but is very Catholic. He's Latinx and speaks fluent Spanish yet claims to watch Telenovelas for no reason other than to 'practice Spanish'. He's a regular, mentally stable guy. He's the least normal of them all, nor is he anywhere close to mentally stable.

I didn't really expect to be out, to be honest. I remember going in a bit deep in turn four so I knew there was some lap time left on the table, but otherwise the lap didn't feel too bad. I knew I could always find a bit more, but I felt like we were probably through. And then when I found out we weren't, I was not shocked I guess, but I saw the times and everyone's so tight on a long lap on a street circuit [and] it's quite unusual. I guess everyone put in some good laps and I guess that little mistake cost me. Frustrating obviously, Q1 exit is never nice, but try and pick it up for tomorrow. It’s a race where you can try and make something happen, so we'll try and make something happen -  but obviously certainly not happy about P16. Hoping for a bit of a wild race, but maybe not to the extent of red flags obviously. But some opportunities I'm sure will present themselves. But I wish I was still out there - wish I was able to put a new set on and put it all together a little bit cleaner.

is it just me or was shoupe a little hesitant when he was talking to the pogues and they brought up genrette's daughter larissa aka jj's mom

okay bear with me here... shoupe pauses before saying "i'm aware, i knew her" and then seems to be playing it off by saying "we all did, you know, small island"

later on shoupe is looking through newspaper clippings with a somber expression (which granted could be explained as him just being confused lol). one article says "the recent drowning of Larissa Groff and her infant son has raised suspicions of a possible murder-suicide stemming from postpartum depression... was found submerged in the waters of Goat Island alongside her precious baby boy, Jackson" but obviously jj is alive so either some other baby was placed with her to hide jj or it was a lie and there was no baby found... either way there's a cover up going on

we also know that luke was on the boat when larissa drowned. clearly he isn't jj's dad but he knew larissa and must have seen her die and been part of the cover up to have gotten jj

the other article shoupe looks at says "chandler groff exonerated" which implies that he may have been a suspect in larissa's death

possible explanations:

1) larissa really did commit suicide but before she did, she gave jj to luke (for some reason she trusted him??) to protect him from groff

2) luke saw groff kill larissa and try to kill jj, but luke saved jj from drowning and took him

there has to be some greater plot here though because somehow genrette knew that jj was really his grandson so why would he A) leave him alone when he is the only part of his daughter left and B) keep groff around if he really did something to larissa/jj. or did he only figure it out when the pogues got famous and he saw jj, realized he looked like larissa and did the math… but that would mean luke orchestrated the cover up by himself and he’s dumb af

now here is where i get a little crazy... what if WHAT IF groff isn't jj's biological dad like the ending implied... but SHOUPE IS

Shallan, evidently, did not have that problem.

"Fornication?" she repeated incredulously.

"It's a curse word," Wit said through gritted teeth. "Used to be common, but it's fallen out of favor among shardplanets the last several thousand years for some stupid CHILD CREATING reason."

Wit snarled, pacing the tent furiously.

"Which is a real PLEASURABLE PHYSICAL INTERACTION shame because now i sound really copulatingly stupid swearing with connection based direct translations, but cursing by 'Gods' or the dead or the weather or whatever intense intimacy else this vigorous impregnation planet swears by is NOT as satisfying when i am this LOVEMAKINGLY angry."

Wit kicked a chair, which flew with shocking force, tearing a hole in sturdy canvas siding. He stared at the tear, exhausted, then collapsed, arms wrapping around himself.

"I'm sorry," he whispered to Jasnah, who was approaching cautiously, in full Armour. "I shouldn't have done that. I generally don't have enough of a temper to lose it like that, but...gender neutral attempt at babies. He stole my breaths. I don't even know how much I lost...it will take decades to do an inventory, and even then...there's important secrets I vowed to protect. Lost people I swore to remember. Oaths I can't even properly remember making anymore, but I have to - I..."

Jasnah knelt down, taking Wit in her arms as he wept softly.

"And I can't even coitally curse right anymore," he sobbed.

What I did wonder in regards to Curly and his relationship with Jimmy and the reasons they're friends and he's so set on helping Jimmy is if Curly doesn't have a troubled background of his own. Either because he was like Jimmy and cleaned up his act or maybe his family was a mess (like how people with abusive parents are  more likely to end up with abusive partners). His comment on how people aren't slaves to their past felt like he was also talking from personal experiences and that's why he couldn't bring himself to give up on Jimmy. It's speculation but would make more sense to me than some other theories idk

My personal headcanon was that Curly had older parents who died when was relatively young (natural causes considering the world they likely live in) and he was kinda hung up on it and aimless in life. Jimmy latched onto that vulnerability and sorta fed off of/molded Curly into the person he likes throughout the years. It was really based on Curly needing a sedimentary figure in his life and Jimmy needed a something to feed off of, it wasn't always like this but it quickly became that dynamic. The major issue is Curly doesn't realize that he's not holding on to Jimmy but Jimmy is clinging to him.

I think they met young but not incredibly young. Teen years to young adulthood. A song that I think would encapsulate their relationship and how they worked is Ryan and Dave. I think Curly did get into regular teenage trouble; smoking, trespassing, mild vandalism, etc... But he stopped, grew out of it in a normal time frame while Jimmy just escalated. It's one of those cases where Jimmy never admitted how bad some of the trouble he was recover from was or how frequent. Curly helped because he just thought it was minor hiccups in Jimmy's road to progress, not everyone's journey is linear.

I think the idea that Curly had to be as bad as Jimmy or of a similar mindset at one time gets rid of the aspect that some people are just friends with people like Jimmy. Good men are friends with men like Jimmy. It's not always because they were just a like but because they can't perceive their worst actions for what they are, most men like Jimmy aren't just forthcoming with bad shit they did. They warp it to sound like the victim which we know Jimmy does a lot with Curly. It's not an excuse to why he didn't look deeper or think harder about it, but individuals like that sow giving them the benefit of the doubt into the very foundation of their relationships.

It's toxic and parasitic and the host should realize better, but that little bug will do anything to make sure they don't. Even to their own detriment.
