for the longest time Gotham had story's of the sound of horse hooves whenever things seem to be crashing down.

Wisper's in the wind of somebody who looked like it wasn't a good idea to give your name to speeding by on the bones of a burnt horse, always followed by how clear the sky looked for a couple of days after a new Wisper ran out.

story's of somebody getting pulled away from something that was aimed to kill them. followed by the flash of a fanged smile and the whispers of hope.

of "its okay i got ya' your safe now." of "its not your time. get home safe lost one." of "done worry i got ya. you are NOT diein on me today."

at first it was just a thing to tell as a story to a kid, a way of saying somebody was out there, caring. just like the bats and the birds who for the longest time was just a story. something to be told. hope in its rawist form. a story, but nothing more when it came to Gotham, a place where if you didn't harden up FAST you'd end up worse then dead in a dich somewhere.

.. yet the story of the fae'ed rider on the charcoaled skeleton of a life long gone still wisped around Gotham. they are barely ever seen, still a mystery of wisping green flame, flowing almost glowing white hair that stuck out like a sore thumb in the darkened sky's of of crime riddled city and what seamed to be a void of sky following them.

yet nobody said they believed that the story's where true. if you did, the folks around you sent you pitying glances thinking you where hit to badly with some sort of new poison gas.

it stayed that way for a long time, just whispers, something to talk about after the bat came to save the night and the scare was over, nothing more nothing less.

...that changed one stormy night somewhere in Gotham around 2am.

it was a real storm tonight, some sort of hurricane had whirled in and it was BAD.

all that bats where on call for the night trying to get folks to safer grounds but it was not going smoothly.

a rouge of some sort had found out how to make WATERPROOF fire that glowed a sickly dark blue and the storm seemed to be alive. battering the people with water so fierce, it looked black.

batman and robin where doing recon on a roof talking with the rest of the crew trying to figure out the next line of approach to this battle when a ear splitting *creak* rang out making the bats turn and get ready for something. anything really.

what they saw was a old building about crash down on a civilian in a place where they thought they had cleared.

it's a slit second panic from the bat and the small bird beside him not wanting to dig up a dead body, there was a split second scramble to get there and save the poor civilian that's about to have a metric clown ton of building on them.

all of a sudden the sound of hooves hitting the asphalt of the ground rang out. it slowly got closer until all of a sudden HE was there.

almost as soon as the he had shown up, he passed by the civilian, swooping them up and putting them on the ... horse? horse. the horses back, making Shure to still hold on to the newly acquired passenger. and with the sound of hooves descending, he was gone again.

not even a second later a louder *creek* ran out and the building came crashing down right where the civilian had been.

a lot later after the storm settled down and all of Gotham's flying themed fighter's where in the bat cave for there usual debrief, oracle pulled up a photo somebody had posted online.

(if ya zoom in under the horses hoof that's on the ground you will see that I have my signature on it ^^ I'm really proud of this artwork, and i can firmly say it took a LOT of looking at horse bones to do-)

3 weeks later and a LOT of bat fuelled paranoia, led bat man and ---(dealers choice, I'm going with Damian cuz animals.) to a farm that was a little bit out from Gotham. that, for all the snooping they had done, seemed to have just popped up out of nowhere a couple of years ago. when they finally stepped out of the batmobile they where greeted with the sight of a tan-ish, black-haired male with a sunhat that seemed to have.. was that a crown on the sunhat? yup. that's a crown. and a Lichtenberg scar crawling up there right arm or for that person, there left arm. he had ripped loose jean-shorts on and was holding what seemed to be a bunny in his arms. he had no shoes on it seamed though.

standing besides the black-haired male is a gorgeous black horse that seems to be a Friesen, with the most green eyes ya'ed ever see on a horse

WHU story part done, now for some loose au ideas!

first up we have the farm, following him being crowned king he found out that there was basically nothing for the more animalistic ghost's. so, as to not get to stressed out being king, he open up a farm where he can give all the ghost animals a second chance at being cared for without being abused. plus! it benefits him to!, when he gets to stressed with paper work he can just go chill on the farm with some of his chill ghost pets :3

he still wants to protect but the bats have got that covered so he really only shows up when shtuff goes DOWN. most of the time taking the horse he has with him.

dw the ghost horse isn't alone there, there's definitely a flow of horses and other animals coming in and out of there!

I'm def thinking of naming the horse falkyie (pronounced falk-year)

if you look at the skelli drawing of falkyie you will notice a small bullet hole right behind his eye, lets just say he had a rough living life and i like the head canon that sometimes ghost have something that shows how they died (the scars on Danny's arms)

I also like to think that Danny has a way of disguising the animals to look normal idk how tho- maybe just some ectoplasm shifting?

i also like the idea of Danny being un able to not have the crown and ring on after becoming king so learned to live with it via shape shifting, argo, crown on sunhat and ring turned into a bracelet :3

The batkids on a family trip to the beach, they spend the whole day from 6am to almost midnight there, and when Bruce arrives to be together with them the next day he finds his kids in the living room of the beach house sleeping in 5 mattress they put there all hugging eachother and crushing Jason down because he didnt want to sleep with them

They all go on little trips together without Bruce. When he asks why, Steph tells him it's because it's like hanging out with your boss, and nobody speaks up to argue against it, so he just silently accepts this and cries to Alfred every time they go somewhere without him. Dick feels bad eventually and invites him out sometimes, but only after they've all spent some time together without him.

I imagine the beach was the idea of Steph and Dick. She loves the beach, and Dick loves to hang out, so they're probably the ones to mention it.

Duke is immediately on board, because who doesn't love the beach? Tim. Tim doesn't love the beach. He claims it's because he doesn't like the feeling of sand in between his toes, but they all know it's because he burns easy and will spend weeks surviving solely off aloe vera and a dream.

Jason.. does not really care. He wouldn't go to the beach for himself, but he's kind of just glad he was invited. Damian snubs his nose at the idea of being outside in a sandy water hole for hours under the sun willingly, but Jason seems okay with it so he'll go, but makes sure to voice his complaints the whole time.

Cass was invited. They made these plans in the group chat. She did not respond, but she shows up the morning they leave while they're packing up the van holding a tote bag, sunglasses propped up on her head. She wordlessly goes and sits in the passenger seat, cutting off the argument between Tim and Steph about who gets shotgun.

The car ride is something else entirely. Dick almost crashes the car when Duke makes the most blood curdling screech known to mankind, just because Tim jabbed him in the ribs. Tim claims he deserved it, because Jason just revealed it was Duke who kept putting water in his shoes every morning. Tim has been walking in puddles for weeks. Steph and Damian are getting along surprisingly well in the back row, each just doing their own thing on their phone. There's an open bag of chips between them, and Dick is almost positive it's going to tip over at some point.

Halfway through the ride, Jason gets carsick and they have to pull over into a gas station to get him something. After that, the car ride is calmer, mostly because Jason threatened to projectile vomit on whoever even slightly nudged him. They're all asleep within the next fifteen minutes, leaving Dick and Cass in a comfortable silence.

Their day at the beach is utter chaos as usual. It wouldn't be a batkids trip if there wasn't the occasional chaos here and there.

Dick mother hens them all and makes sure they all use a good amount of sunscreen, and then he goes with Cass, Jason, and Damian into the water. Cass sits and watches in the shallow end while the other three start splashing each other. Jason tries to drown Dick. Dick flails his arms around and accidentally splashes Cass. As she stands menacingly, he knows his life is over.

Tim refuses to move from under the umbrella. He will not say why. They know why anyway. Steph lays out on her blanket to tan and Duke goes off to the side to start digging a hole. Steph starts to doze off, and Tim lays one of his shoelaces across her back to ruin her tan. She does not notice. She wishes she had noticed.

Eventually, Dick goes off to play some volleyball with some other people, and Jason joins Duke in digging. Tim finally leaves the comfort of his umbrella after layering on more sunscreen, and he and Damian sit together to make sand castles. Cass has now started placing more random objects on Steph's back. She will blame it on Tim.

Some guy comes running over and thinks it would be funny to step on Damian and Tim's sand castle. He steps on it and kicks it around, only to be faced with a bulky looking man who looks like he went to hell and back. Jason throws him in the whole and holds him down while everyone else buries him. they leave his head above the sand for someone else to find.

They get to the beach house and fight over the shower. Jason complains at all the san their dragging in, ignoring the fact that he's the one with the majority of sand on him. Duke throws himself onto the couch and Steph starts complaining that he's getting it dirty and that they'll never get rid of the sand. Damian is organizing the seashells he found earlier.

They all get showered and fed and Dick suggests a big living room sleep over. They're all on board, minus Jason. He goes up to his own room and goes to bed. A few minutes later, Damian gets up and leaves also. The rest of them exchange looks of confusion with each other before seeing him drag his mattress from his room into Jason's. They all get the memo, and soon enough they're all cuddled up in one big sweaty batpile. Jason complains, but doesn't push anybody away. They fall asleep, and the next morning they starts arguing because someone didn't shower and now everyone has sand stuck to them.

We need more domestic batkid fics. I need to read them just hanging out together. It'll heal me in all the ways I am ill. Mentally.

Rude: The biggest tsundere-yandere out there. He still calls you an idiot and is not above criticizing you harshly for doing something stupid in his eyes. Honestly, sometimes you really wonder if it's true when he says he loves you. But given the fact that he is a yandere, that is a question you ask yourself only briefly lol.

Dependence: Honestly, this man is just miserable. he lost everything so many times that he stopped counting. Is it an excuse for the way he treats you? No. But you can understand why. He clings to the little bit of luck he still has in his life. You are like the air he needs to breathe. Without you, he'd be like a fish trapped on dry land.

How and when started the obsession:

It takes a long time for Levi to let you get close to him, but once that hurdle is crossed, it doesn't take long for him to snap given the world you both live in.

To a certain degree, yes. But he would consider it natural that he wants to protect you with every fiber of his being.

How far are they willing to go?

Murder: Levi is definitely capable of killing someone without much difficulty. And when it comes to your safety and well-being, he wouldn't hesitate for a second. However, Levi would not kill any potential rivals.

Hurting you: No, Levi would never hurt you physically. However, his blunt words are another story.

Blackmail: If something were to arise, then yes, but Levi wouldn't go out of his way to dig things up. But he would definitely use his position to make sure you are in his squad or don't participate in certain missions.

Kidnapping: It wouldn't be his first choice to kidnap you, because generally, Levi wants you to be happy and do the things you like (as long as you don't put yourself in danger that is). But if you two reach a point where Levi feels that you simply can't learn from your mistakes and continue to act recklessly over and over again, then he will see no other option than to physically restrain you. So that you are no longer a danger to yourself.

Final stage: Honestly the person who is responsible for your death, should just kill themselves before Levi has the chance to get them himself. He will not let them get away. It could take years and Levi would still be as adamant to make the person, who killed you suffer. He would never forget and in the end, he would get to them, no matter where they might try to flee to. The world is too small to hide from Levi Ackermann.

What is it overall like to have them as a Yandere?

As mentioned earlier, Levi is just miserable. He is so out of touch with his feelings that he would probably never confess his feelings to you on his own and you would have to make the first move. Which is why a scenario of rejection is unlikely. If you were to correctly interpret his behavior and tell him that you don't love him, it would hurt him a lot inside, but he wouldn't do anything to you. He wouldn't kidnap you or pressure you into a relationship. Levi doesn't have a high opinion of himself in that regard and probably doesn't think he's worthy of your companionship anyway. He would still stay by your side and protect you, but he doesn't expect anything in return. Knowing that you're safe is good enough for him.

Levi is probably one of the better Yanderes to have. Apart from his overprotectiveness he is pretty reasonable and will actually listen to you if you have complaints.

Erwin Smith:

Manipulative: This man has a way with words. He could bring someone to jump willingly off a cliff if he wanted to. The key word here is "if he wanted to". I have a hard time imagining that he would ever manipulate you. He is too controlled and aware of himself for that.

Stalker: Because of his position as the Commander of the Survey Corps, he doesn't have a lot of time to stalk you. But it is his favorite free time activity. Just watching you do your daily tasks fills him with more joy than you could ever imagine.

Disappearance: Every day anew he sends soldiers to their death. He is convinced that he does not deserve you and that you will be better off with someone else. Which is why he will eventually leave you. It is even more likely that he has never approached at all.

How and when started the obsession:

Erwin feels lonely deep down. And sometimes he finds himself wishing he had someone by his side. But because of his opinion of himself, he never brought himself to change your relationship as comrades into something deeper. It was only a matter of time before all these suppressed emotions grew into something unhealthy.

Yes and no. He was already conflicted enough with his normal feelings, so he didn't notice the change in the beginning.

How far are they willing to go?

Murder: No, never. It would never even cross his mind.

Blackmail: Even if he doesn't like to admit it, there have been situations where he has taken advantage of his position and made sure that this one person, who obviously was interested in you, suddenly stays miles away from you.

Manipulative: Hanji is a master of gaslighting and other manipulative tactics, due to their high intelligence. As soon as you have the slightest idea about their real intentions, they immediately make you doubt yourself. They twist stories, deny things, and immediately accuse you of those actions yourself. Hanji can predict your every move. They are always one step ahead of you. Not in a million years could you ever outsmart them. It's a game for them, honestly.

Bizarre-Seeking: Of course, someone like Hanji, who is already considered strange by many for her nature anyway, must have strange preferences. When it comes to things like strands of hair, you might be able to overlook it, but she definitely collects gross things too, like your fingernails or blood. Hanji has a whole shrine filled with your things. It is their most precious possession, next to you, of course.

Restraints: The amount of time you spend with Hanji is never enough for them. It was only a matter of time before Hanji decided that the best thing for you would be to never leave their side again. Preferably, they tie you directly to them, but if that's not possible, then a chair or the like is fine for a short time.

How and when started the obsession:

I mean, Hanji has always been a little…. strange. You probably never know them any other way. But their obsession with you started when you listened to them talk for hours about Titan experiments.

Do they know that their feelings are unhealthy/not normal?

No, they don't. Hanji thinks it's completely normal to feel this way about their significant other. They don't even think it's weird that they collect your fingernails and such. If you judge them for it, then they rather think that you are the weird one. After all, why should Hanji waste such precious things or not pay any attention to them at all?

How far are they willing to go?

Murder: Hanji would definitely kill people who stand in their way. And God have mercy on anyone they chose to kill. Hanji shows no mercy and no one will ever see the mutilated remains of their victims again. Unless they choose for their own amusement to send the victim's relatives the head.

Hurting you: Should you repeatedly try to leave their side, then Hanji is not above breaking your ankles, or legs, should she see it as more fitting. Just because you've won their love and affection doesn't mean you're saved from their more violent traits. In fact, it is quite the opposite - it just makes you more interesting. There are times when Hanji tortures you or acts out their strange tendencies and cuts off your fingers to add them to their shrine. If you cry the whole time and mess up your beautiful eyes with tears, then it's better if Hanji cuts them out for you to preserve their beauty, right?

Blackmail: In case of minor incidents or at the beginning of your relationship, Hanji usually manipulated you, not infrequently with blackmail. In the later stage, however, they rather choose physical violence. So they usually only blackmail you for fun.

Kidnapping: Hanji will definitely kidnap you and bind you to them forever. There is no other outcome.

Final stage: Hanji can accidentally kill you if she tries to cut anything off of you to be able to keep it. But if you keep rejecting them or even start hating them, they will see no other way than to kill you. Now she can shape you the way she wants. Your body will remain with her forever, as the most beautiful part of her shrine. Should you die due to natural causes, then she will eat your dead body so that you can finally be one again.

What is it overall like to have them as a Yandere?

Hanji is definitely the worst and most dangerous yandere of them all. Every one of your friends and family members runs the risk of being brutally murdered by them. And even you are not spared. The possibility that you die as her darling is incredibly high. And should you not be dead, then you are highly mutilated and disfigured. With them you always walk on eggshells, afraid of what they might do. In addition, you never have a free minute from them, because they always have you near them, if not directly tied to them.

She flirts like it’s a threat, and JJ lives for it. She’s young, mouthy, always smells like Victoria’s Secret body lotion, and doesn’t give a damn about being liked only about being wanted.

JJ’s obsessed. He tries to act like he’s just keeping an eye on her, like she’s just a kid he feels responsible for but his hands always end up somewhere they shouldn’t. She makes him feel dangerous again. She reminds him of who he was before life got heavy.

People stare when they’re together. He looks like her parole officer; she looks like she dared the devil to kiss her. They don’t care. They show up at gas stations together, her in cutoffs and bikini tops, him in dirty jeans and a ripped tee, and everyone knows something ain’t right but no one says a damn thing.

She teases him about his age constantly calls him “old man,” steals his reading glasses, asks if he needs a break after round one. But the moment he flips her onto her back and tells her to shut up with his hand around her throat, she turns to putty.

Her favorite thing to do is make him lose control. She’ll crawl into his lap at a cookout, whisper filthy things in his ear just to see him grit his teeth. Once, she sucked on a popsicle real slow while he was talking to someone and he had to excuse himself before he said something illegal.

She calls him Daddy when she’s drunk. Not because he asked. Just because she knows it makes his hands shake. First time she said it, he choked on his beer. Now he can’t stop thinking about it. But she also cleans up his kitchen in just her thong and a tank top, and JJ starts to think maybe this kind of mess is the kind he wants to keep.

She makes JJ feel young again. He’d long accepted that he was gonna die in that same beat-up trailer alone. But then she showed up fresh out of jail with a butterfly knife and a tramp stamp and now he’s driving around town like a 20-something with a new toy.

She makes pancakes in a thong while JJ just leans against the doorway, staring at the curve of her hips while she curses out the pan. She plays Shania Twain on her cracked pink phone while flipping bacon. He swears she’s going to kill him one day but what a way to go.

He gives her all his keys. To the bike. The truck. The trailer. It’s his quiet way of saying he’s hers even if they never say it out loud. She clips them onto her belt loop like jewelry, showing off to every other girl in the trailer park.

She sharpens her knife at the kitchen table while he rolls a joint. Sometimes they don’t talk for hours. Just sit in silence with that thick, swampy heat between them. Her legs on his lap. His fingers on her thigh. Two feral creatures who found each other in the ruins.

Franco was right. The company offers more money and they increase the size of the team so the miners take turns working in the Grey. Still, Vander notices that the same men don't keep volunteering after a few days. They complain of itching eyes and an annoying cough after their third shift, and there's a limit to how much people will risk for money.

The company raises its rates, until a day working on the elevator is worth nearly three days on level one but they're still not overwhelmed with volunteers.

And no matter how much is offered, the foundlings will look to Silco and not one of them will raise their hands. He's not sure Silco even realises the strength of his influence. On nothing more than Silco's tight frown, they stand there with hands hidden in their pockets.

It worries Vander a little. Worries him more that he can see things shifting in the courtyard: miners waiting for the day's shifts, equipment in hand, cautiously murmuring as supervisors call for the elevator shifts. The foundling teens usually drift to one side, standing together, but now there are adult miners standing at the fringes of the group with the same wary expression he's seen on Silco.

"Were they foundlings too?" Vander asks, ducking his head close to Silco's and looking over at them.

Silco looks surprised. Not at the group itself, pulling away from the other miners, but at Vander noticing at all. "Yes."

"Huh." The way the groups stand, the gap growing between them…

It becomes more obvious over the next few days. The kids have always hung together, been a little bit separate from the adults, but now the mine seems to splitting into factions, the foundlings versus the other miners, those in debt versus those who could choose to leave.

Silco stays at Vander's side, stays with the other miners but Vander wonders if it's only a matter of time before he joins the other foundlings. If that's why they keep looking to follow Silco's lead.

Vander waits until they're working and far enough from the others that a conversation won't be overheard. "Do you know what's going on? With the foundlings in the courtyard?"

It would be nice, Vander thinks, if Silco would trust him. If Silco didn't take a moment of frowning up doubtfully at Vander like he's weighing up whether to risk telling Vander. Begrudgingly, Silco says, "They're waiting."

"For what?"

"Every day, there are less volunteers for digging out the elevator shaft. They're waiting to see what happens when the work needs to be done and no one wants to do it."

"They'll pay more." There's always miners willing to work for the right price.

"And if that doesn't work?" Silco asks, blue eyes scanning the busy shaft around them. "Foundlings aren't withdrawing money they don't have to buy gas masks. Doing that work will kill them."

"So the company has to find another way?"

Silco actually laughs, a painfully bitter sound. "You think the great city of progress will find a better way? If there aren't enough volunteers, the company will order someone to do it. Haven't you noticed the extra enforcers hanging by the office in the mornings? They're waiting too."

"They can't just order us. This isn't a prison."

"They can't order you," Silco says, voice low and almost threatening. "The miners would leave if they tried it. But those of us in debt? They'll order us and the rest of you won't lift a finger to stop it."

They're both wearing their hardhats, so there's a low thunk when Vander rests his head against Silco's. "I wouldn't let that happen to you."

Silco looks at him like he's a fool. Like he shouldn't waste his money or his time on Silco. Like a smarter man would walk away.

Silco sighs, raising a gloved hand to press on Vander's chest. Vander covers it with his big hand, holding it against Vander's heart. "I mean it. I wouldn't let that happen without a fight."

"You wouldn't win," Silco says weakly.

"Don't know until you try."

Hand in hand, forehead to forehead, Silco takes a deep, unsteady breath. "You could leave. You should. before this gets too ugly."

"We're in this together. You and me," Vander promises. "Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

I’ve seen some people say “you can’t just say its ‘bad writing’ only because Byler didn’t become endgame.” There are some films where the driving force for its success is the romantic storyline. Two people go on an adventure and you root for them to get together and there’s ups and downs and twists and turns and then in the final minutes they share a kiss and all is right in the world. THEN there’s a sequel and they break up and do it all over again just to get back together AGAIN in the end —that’s bad writing. It’s cheap writing. You’re back to square one. The driving force of strangers things success is NOT Mike and El as a couple. Period. Nobody wants to watch them break up just to get back together season after season. Even the GA is tired of their shit and thinks they’re better off apart. Everyone can see the cracks in their relationship even if they don’t have an answer yet as to why Mike is behaving this way. We haven’t had his POV in a while. We don’t know what’s going on in his head. People love to just chalk up his behavior to puberty or poor writing or just straight up believing that Mike is just a jerk now instead of doing a little digging and figuring out why. I 100% believe that if Mike didn’t go to California when he did he definitely would have been a victim of Vecna. No doubt in my mind because it’s obvious he’s struggling with something difficult. Something that has made it impossible for him to say that he loves his girlfriend for 2 whole seasons. Something that makes him push Will away. Mike being queer and in love with Will would make sense. It would plug up all of those little holes in his story so far. It would be an answer as to why he’s been behaving weirdly. It fits the pattern of how this show builds characters with layers and depth and builds storylines with cool twists and unexpected turns. A show that for an entire season had its audience intentionally believe in a Robin/Steve romantic pairing. To root for them to get together and to grow to love her—knowing full well that it wasn’t going to end as expected. That’s good writing. It’s great writing. You never want the writing in a show to feel predictable. That’s no fun. I argue that it ended better than it would have if they had just end up together. Would they have been a nice couple together? Yeah!—but instead of yet another straight relationship we have this beautiful platonic friendship that the show needed. The writing in this show is NOT BAD that’s the whole point. It would be out of character for a show that is centered on nerds, freaks, outcast and finding your true self and not conforming to what society deems normal to have the storyline of the traumatized gay kid end sadly in unrequited love just to continue the storyline of a failing relationship. Why is it so weird for people to think that they couldn’t do that same thing they did with Robin with Mike. Yeah some people might not buy it might say it came out of nowhere. BUT just because they might not have picked up on the hints doesn’t mean they weren’t there. Sometimes people need to have the answer to the equation first before they go back and look for those hints. To see the finished puzzle first to then begin to fill in those blanks. To prompt a rewatch of the series which shows like stranger things love to do because there are so many nuances in the dialogue and so many plot points hidden in subtext that you might not see in one watch. To have people eventually go “Oh, why didn’t I see that? That makes sense now!” To have those people who grew to hate Mike finally sympathize with him and to understand his struggles. To tell a better story— a story that usually isn’t told. A story that challenges the audience and makes them see things in a different way.

at this point, i'm a fanon multishipper and not a canon one. i ship buck and tommy and eddie with each other in equal parts and in any configuration. i love them and all of their complexities! however, as far as canon is concerned, i'm really only shipping bucktommy which will skew my answer to this question, certainly.

i don't really think you can put people in camps like that, as buddie shippers are not a monolith. there are mean ones, nice ones, people ship casually, and people who make it a part of their personalities...i don't like to think of it that way, especially since some of my favorite people are buddie monoshippers. they arent really on tumblr but in case they see this: HI <3

that being said, the show that buddie canon shippers watch and the show that i'm watching seem to be different shows. and it doesn't help that all of the supporting media (the journalism and the non-abc promotional materials) all confirm their worldview. it's easy to get swept up in it all! i won't pretend that before s8, i wasn't the same way. that summer between seasons, i was convinced buddie was going canon. i really was! but the break up happening in the same episode where eddie all but says directly to the audience, "i am a heterosexual man", like? it blew it open for me. personally, i lost bucktommy and buddie all in one episode. a devastating blow!

all of this to say that, yes and no, i think they're delusional. yes, it seems far fetched to me that buddie will be canon. at this point, i'm half convinced that ryan might be leaving for the spin off! time will tell. but it doesn't seem likely when the narrative and the actors and the interviews (regardless of how buddiepilled the interviewers are) are all saying that this isn't in the cards.

but in many ways, it isn't delusional to cling to a thing you've been waiting for for years. buck and eddie DO have a very special relationship. they really do! i like to read about them touching faces! but the selective hearing buddie canon shippers seem to have sometimes is breathtaking. my favorite example from this last episode; the scene where buck and maddie are talking about tommy's insistence that buck has romantic feelings for eddie.

buck: i'm living in eddie's old house, therefore i must be in love with him? maddie: are you? buck: in love with eddie? maddie: it wouldnt be so crazy buck: except that i'm not! as much as everyone wants me to be hopelessly pining for my straight best friend, it just isn't like that

this scene is so interesting! because we're all seeing something different! if you look at it on its face, it's buck saying that he isn't in love with eddie. cut and dry! but if you're used to digging deeper for proof of your ship, you could read and interpret this as canon buddie set up.

something i think a lot of canon buddie truthers forget is that 911 is a network tv comedy drama written for the broadest possible audience. they already took a risk with buck realizing and coming out later in life. i know ga viewers in my personal life who feel baited and switched by that. not enough to stop watching! but still. to bring in a character who is gay already (ish) to create a will-they-wont-they queer romance is the only way we're getting a queer will-they-wont-they on this show. and i dont think enough canon buddie shippers are looking at this realistically. which isn't necessarily delusional! just short sighted, imo.

all of this being said. it's a little culty, sometimes. depending on where you are on the internet and who you're talking to. once you start truly believing that they've been planning canon buddie since day one...that is delusional. in my opinion. also, sometimes the stuff culty buddie canon shippers say about tommy...homophobic as hell. in the name of progress! make that make sense!

It is 240 pm in the afternoon and the sun is beneath the horizon and my marbles are on the loose as a result so let me tell you about the shitshow going down on the Dalton highway at this very moment.

The Dalton highway is a gorgeous strip of frozen dirt through the dead center of nowhere with no services for about 400 miles or so. The road runs up to the oil fields and generally doesn't see non commercial traffic because when I say there's nothing up there I mean that nothing has changed much since the last ice age. It is also, and this is important, December at the far extreme reaches of the northern hemisphere.

so. At mile six, first major hill of the way, there is a Canadian company with 3 oversized loads who have never run the road before. They were very confident. The road is closed because between the 3 of them and all the pilot trucks there is a single set of unbroken chains, and while I am sure they will preserve and dig themselves out of their shitshow, there is an unpleasant lesson being learned.

That said, the over confident Canadians are not the dumbest people on the road right now.

There is a group of tourists who have elected to drive up into the arms of the frozen north in the depths of winter. This is fine, its a bucket list thing, if you want to experience the true impress of the arctic from the comfort of a vehicle, running up the Dalton is the way to do it.

However.

The thing about electric vehicles is that, well, they're really not suited to extremely cold environments. The heater eats the battery and there's no combustion to generate heat in the first place. Batteries freeze. There's not even a gas station for 400 miles and it's further to a charging station. Its approximately the same issue Mark Watney had in The Martian except there is no sun and no option for solar power.

And there are some supremely ambitious tourists currently driving a little caravan of electric vehicles to the north slope. With the beginning of the road closed thanks to the overconfident Canadians, they won't be getting help for a while.

Supposedly they have a generator with them. Now, personally, for me, that's too many confounding factors in between me and the goal of not dying. The electricity powering the cars came from fossil fuels anyway, but it seems to me that carrying fuel with you to run the generator to power the car has an unnecessary step.

AFAIK there isnt any weather beyond the usual rolling in so these probably won't be fatal lessons to learn, just cold and uncomfortable ones. But also, people die like this all the time and there isn’t as if its anyone's job to stop people from committing to suicidally stupid road trips, there is no consequence that could be inflicted by a traffic cop that is worse than what will happen if you do fuck up doing the thing he told you not to.

Thoughts on Nere

Ugh, look at his pretty white eyelashes. I just want to smoosh his face.

I have a lot of thoughts regarding Nere and how he could have gotten where he is by the time we see him. @lysblack has started a really excellent conversation I would like to expand on. For science.

So may I present a somewhat lengthy analysis (rambling thoughts) of Nere, based on comments of other characters, what we know, and my reading of the Drizzt Do'Urdon books that go deeply into Menzoberranzan and life there.

Warning - this is long

Let's start with when we meet Nere.

Before we meet him, we meet the duergar, who have some things to say - Morgal is the one asking if you and the other duergar are "plowing", and from Corsair Greymon asking if "the Sargent has choked on True Soul Nere's prick". I do think that the duergar here are just generally vulgar and probably don't have much respect for anyone, but they are definitely getting to the end of their patience with Nere. They are mostly hired mercenaries with at least one believer in the Absolute among them (Sargent Thrinn). Something to note here is that duergar are a race of dwarves that were experimented on an changed by Mind Flayers and later escaped, that is why they have psionic powers, you can connect to them without them having a tadpole, and they have a special nose for True Souls because they can literally smell the parasite in you.

When you move down to the cave in area where Nere is trapped and Thrinn and her crew are trying to dig him out, you can talk to Nere through the rubble. He is literally suffocating to death on the poison that is filling the room, and obviously panicking - he thinks he is going to die in that room and I don't blame him. In his eyes (and any Lolthsworn drow), the people that are supposed to be rescuing him are just about the worst case scenario - they are inferior, disloyal, stupid, and unlikely to succeed. Like Minthara, I am sure he would MUCH rather have drow coming to rescue him than mercenary duergar and slave deep gnomes. On that note, he even is quick to tell you, another True Soul, not to trust the duergar mercenaries.

I also want to take a moment to say that no matter what we think of his behavior, Nere has to be under an absolute unbearably high amounts of pressure at this point - he is failing in his mission, he is stuck in the rubble that is quickly filling with gas, with wildly unreliable help. Like this is peak desperation. He is lashing out in anger and fear in any way he can. I think our Tav showing up is probably the only thread of hope he has to cling on to. Even Gale recognizes how bad of a situation Nere is in.

When you push into Nere's mind at the rubble and see through his eyes while he is suffocating to death in the cave in, the narrator makes a point to say that he had killed a gnome with powerful magic. He probably went to Sorcere (school for magic) in Menzoberranzan (although it is possible he isn't from Menzo).

Most noble drow have a natural talent for magic (breeding throughout the centuries), but sometimes commoners have the talent for it too. Sorcere is almost exclusively men because women with any talent for magic go to Arach-Tinilith, the school for drow priestesses. Male drow can also go to the school for fighting, Melee-Magthere (Drizzt went here), and they do spend one year at the end of their training in Sorcere learning some magic.

The reason I don't think Nere is a noble is that he would have certainly let us know if he were, especially if you are playing as a drow (I play as a drow female). This could just be an oversight in the writing, but I don't think so. When you fight the spectator over where the petrified drow are, if you manage not to get Dhourn the wizard killed and talk to him (disguise yourself as a female drow if you don't play as one and you can bully him into giving you his research and not have to kill him), he immediately lets you know he is the third boy of house Ba'Tol. In everything else I have experienced, drow are quick to name drop their house. It is extremely important in Lolthsworn society.

Nere is probably a commoner with enough magic talent to go to the school. All drow have a little magic to some degree, but to really learn it you have to go to Sorcere. There are few things you can do as a male in Memzoberranzan that give you any sort of status besides "useless male", and wizard/sorcerer is one. I suppose it is possible he is of noble birth, but I really think he would have let us know.

In Sorcere he would have spent most of his time around other males, as Sorcere is a 30 year long school (unlike Melee-Magthere which is 10), and exclusively male, which could explain why a female hadn't absolutely killed the shit out of him yet. The occasional priestesses from Arach-Tinilith would be around, but I think he could manage to be fine.

Nere certainly has an attitude to match with having gone to Sorcere. Some of his reactions, like blaming others for failures, are actually VERY cultural and expected among Lolthsworn drow. It just tracks. It would be strange if he didn't. He would have, however, faced constant criticism, bullying, sabotage, and crappy backstabbing politics within his time there, so it makes sense that he would have some emotional baggage regarding failure. Pretty much all male drow do to some extent. Even if he didn't have to deal too much with daily subjugation by female drow, he would still have faced a lot of scrutiny from other males in Sorcere. Failure of any kind is extremely dangerous in Lolthsworn society, especially for men.

I don't think his failure necessarily comes from him being bad at things. He has really good stats, so he isn't weak at all. He is also physically very strong. He is taller than both Gale and Astarion. The top of my female drow's head comes up to his chin (as opposed to Astarion and Gale where the top of her head is about dead center on theirs). He is also clearly intended to be intimidating. He has the Muscular feature as well as High Spellcasting - so he is big, strong, and good with magic. Wisdom is his lowest stat, and that could be the source of his problems in life. Strangely, he has really high charisma... but I will get to that shortly.

Anyway, back to the Grymforge. Before you bust him out of the rubble, talk to Thrinn, then go talk to the two drow who want to betray Nere, go back and talk to Thrinn and let her know they are planning to betray him. She doesn't seem particularly concerned with Nere's ability to handle them.

I think it is reasonable to assume that Nere is not a total fuckup. I think he has a lot of talent and strengths, but is either unlucky or unwise, or some combination of both. He has enough intelligence and strength to be powerful, and enough charisma to persuade people, but not enough wisdom and insight to know when to shut up or walk away... or when he is in over his head.

I do think he is unwise... there are some indications that he constantly underestimates what he is up against. This could be from lack of experience or this is just a character flaw.

Baby boy, what about any of this is simple? Please. You should have known better.

He is trying so hard here to convince himself that things are going to work out, but you can here it in his voice that he is trying to believe it. He must think that we are surely powerful enough to speak to Ketheric and convince him that Nere is still worthy. He is lacking the appropriate wisdom and insight to really accept what has happened.

We know from talking to Minthara that the influence of the Absolute is extremely overpowering and overrides any of your own common sense. It turns you into a fanatic and forces you to do things you would never ever do if you had control of yourself. This would also be true of Nere. He has this wild fanaticism and desperation to please Ketheric and the Absolute, but he drops it IMMEDIATELY when you fill him in on what is really going on. Once he is free of the brain's power and sees the bigger puncture, there is a very strong shift in his attitude.

He becomes very reasonable and quickly puts two and two together. This is probably the first time ever in his life where he is free of cult influence - if you convince him to run from the Absolute (and also I assume Lolth, because dear god he CAN NOT go back there without being tortured to death for information and then killed or worse, turned into a drider for his sins against Lolth)... and it does seem like he has a lot to process.

He is actually very calm and grateful for what you have done for him. It is such a shame you can't drag him around with you.

I am also not sure if it is an oversight in writing, or if Nere loses control of his mind again once we leave the area, or if he is just so pissed off at Balthazar and Ketheric and the whole ordeal that he goes after Balthazar to try and mess everything up for the Absolute by sabotaging the Nightsong plot.... but it is just such a shame that he dies anyway. I would like to think it is just a gap in writing because the game is SO HUGE.

If he is wiling to potentially die for a cause, what better cause than getting revenge on the people who did this to him? What better hook to get him to join our party and quest to destroy the Absolute and rid ourselves of the parasite? I think this is a huge missed opportunity.

As far as how he became an exile/rogue, because I really do think he was.... (previous post on this)... I think there are a few possibilities, and we have absolute no indication as to what they could have been.

So this is pure speculation with nothing to back it up on my part. Here are a list of reasons he could have resulted in him being separated from Lolthite society.

Was out on some kind of mission and failed, couldn't go back without risk of severe punishment or death.

Separated from expedition to the surface (for slaves, or supplies, or whatever) either through no fault of his own or because he was unwise.

Attempted to kill someone and failed, fled. Probably while they were away from the city.

There was an attempt on his life that failed and he fled. Probably also while they were away from the city.

Was scouting or part of an expedition for a noble house that was annihilated while they were away. Nothing to return to without risking being killed.

I don't think he was some matriarch's special pet, because there is a certain level of obedience a reverence for female drow he would need to have to not be killed. His attitude is way off to have been some matron or priestess's favorite. Sure he is hot, but most drow are hot, so the standards for "too hot to be killed" are way too high for that to have been it. There are plenty of dead hot drow men.

I think it is likely that he made some mistakes that led to him not being able to go back for fear of death. I also think that when he mentions going to the Order of Soul Spiders, that is just him being unwise and not thinking the whole thing thorough. Like baby boy, you are going to be destroyed once the hear what you have to say. Sure, they will want to know it, but you are NOT going to escape punishment for abandoning Lolth. That isn't a possibility. Think it through.

Ok wow this post got too long and way out of hand. Nere is my current hyperfixation, and I hope that at least two of you share this hyperfixation with me and found this worth reading.

starting with no. 1, i think he wants something. he so CLEARLY wants something. i don't TRUST THIS MAN he may be HOT but he is UP TO SMTH!!! what i don't know is what he wants from the kids. getting them on his side and trusting him feels like a way of getting more information out of them, and what could he possibly be digging for if not more information on the phantom realm?

Alex was asking Ashlyn about the fact that they all asked for ASL books at the same time and thus must have some way of communicating. i think they must know it has to do with the phantom realm (though they don't know that it's an entire separate dimension i think) and Maverick wants to know more about how they're communicating. with the promise that he will protect them from the rest of the government, which i think might just entail "keeping you for ourselves"

and how does he get the kids to trust them? making himself seem like a good option, and separating himself from "those who put them here." the government. the bad part of the government. and how does he do that?

well that's where we come to no. 2

they have cameras. they can watch the kids and how they're acting. in fact, they've been watching the kids for a while now. if i were to pick anyone to try and talk to to get on my side having observed them from a distance, maybe id pick Taylor or Logan. the others are stubborn or unpredictable in their own ways.

So why Ben?

Maverick is trying to draw several comparisons in Ben's mind, especially with using language like the above and like this:

He's trying to get into Ben's mind and say "Hey. We want the same thing you want: to get rid of this place." The way he calls them a bunch of pigs ALMOST makes me hesitate on thinking he's being insincere, but on the other hand would that phrasing not resonate with a jaded teenage boy who's been in trouble before?

Maverick went to Ben because he saw a way in through Ben. Even though Ben is violent and stubborn (right now. and towards the staff), he recognizes that he can use Ben's past as a way of leveraging himself to a higher status in Ben's mind. Besides, if he can get one of the more stubborn kids to crack first, he's got a much easier way in with the others.

Furthermore, this will lead to more observation. He must know the kids are communicating somehow, he just doesn't know how exactly yet. This part isn't Ben specific, but by talking to one of them, he then gives himself the opportunity to watch the rest more closely for any mention of things he's said to Ben. Evidence that they have some way of talking. A way of figuring out how they're doing so.

Maverick is using Ben's past to manipulate him into trusting him.

Hello! I’m curious what your thoughts are/what you make of the whole potato thing in sotr? It felt like such an odd motif/symbol to highlight and use so heavily to me. Like idk it just felt a little silly and at odds with the tone sometimes. Like yeah there was the whole battery thing and the night light which people have said is meant to be an instance of showing humanity which is fine I guess and then people have been pointing out that katniss is a swamp potato, but idk. I can’t tell if it just wasn’t done super well or if I’m missing something and I’d love to hear your take lol

If there was a deeper meaning to it outside of “potato battery” I’m sorry to say I didn’t see it. At all. The only thing I kept thinking about the potatoes as they kept coming up, was how many times Haymitch just ate them raw. Raw potatoes are extremely detrimental to your stomach because your body can’t break them down properly, but also their composition isn’t exactly healthy.

Raw or undercooked potatoes contain resistant starch, which is difficult for the body to digest and can result in gastrointestinal distress: bloating, gas, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases if the potatoes have enough solanine, it can lead to poisoning.

Maybe there was some kind of symbolism there, I don’t know. I was too focused on the fact that Haymitch was actively giving himself stomach issues teetering on trying to kill himself. Also just… I don’t know why he didn’t try digging around for a potato in the arena instead of what he did, why use one of the few items of food he had that he knew wasn’t poisonous for a battery??? Why waste food like that in an arena without even trying to find something else?

The whole potato thing was just frustratingly stupid to me. Please do not eat raw potatoes.

I've seen people say this about Rengoku and Mitsuri again and again, very often as a way to shut down others who are having fun with the Renmitsu ship. Not only is it annoying to constantly run into this from people who don't really know what they're talking about, but it's also inaccurate and way oversimplifies their cute dynamic! Let's dig deeper.

For a moment, let's also just forget about the above panel where she is very obviously all 🥰 at him and, instead, let's go straight to the source: what the Pillars all think about each other in the official guidebook. Better yet, let's look at it in the original Japanese!

Now, I am still a student of Japanese. I am by no means fluent, so if I make any mistakes, please feel free to let me know! I'm always looking to learn something new.

First, from Rengoku:

才能が凄い！技の独創性も凄い！可愛い後輩！

Sainō ga sugoi! Waza no dokusō-sei mo sugoi! Kawaii kōhai!

In the first two sentences, he's praising her big time! "Her talent is amazing! The creativity/ingenuity of her technique is also amazing!" In the last sentence, he calls her a cute kōhai. If you're familiar with the term senpai, then kōhai is the alternative. It's just a term to refer to a junior coworker or classmate. Mitsuri joins the Demon Slayer Corps. after him, and he was her mentor before he became the Flame Hashira. (However, in the Rengoku gaiden, he tells her that they are no longer master & student, but instead equal peers. Overall, he clearly thinks she's very skilled and also cute.

Next, from Mitsuri:

かっこいいお兄様！一緒に修行して楽しかった。可愛がってもらった！

Kakkoii onii-sama! Issho ni shugyō shite tanoshikatta. Kawaigatte moratta!

The first sentence, translated literally, just says "Cool big brother!" Now, one thing that makes Japanese both fun and difficult is that speakers often rely on context and omit entire parts of the sentence that an English speaker would normally use. In this case, in English, you wouldn't just say "Cool big brother!" You might say something like "He's like a cool big brother to me" or "I view him as a cool big brother figure." In this case, we don't have that. What we do have, however, is cultural context! In Japanese culture, familial terms are often used as terms of endearment or respect with people close to the speaker or even politely with strangers. So it would be normal to call an older male "big brother" even if they weren't actually your brother. (Kind of similarly, if you're at all familiar with Korean culture, girls often call their own boyfriends 오빠 (obba), which means — you guessed it — "older brother.") Here, Mitsuri refers to Rengoku as onii-sama, and that last part is important! The -sama suffix is super polite and formal, and long story short, you wouldn't normally refer to someone in your own in-group (family, circle of friends, etc.) with such a formal, respectful title. It is, however, a term you might use to refer to someone else's brother. So there's a very good chance that she's not saying "he's my cool older brother" but instead "he's a cool older brother!" And he is! He's an amazing older brother to Senjurō, and Mitsuri knows this. [UPDATE: I've spoken with a couple people who know way more about the Japanese language than me and, apparently, in this context onii-sama literally just means "guy." 🤣 She's literally just saying "He's a cool guy!"]

[UPDATE #2: I've also recently learned that kakkoii doesn't really mean "cool," but is instead a compliment specifically to men that means something more like, "good-looking, handsome, or cool in a manly way." INTERESTING. 👀]

In the next sentence, she says, "It was fun training together!" Pretty straightforward. The last sentence is very, very interesting, because at a cursory translation, Google would tell you that it just straight-up means, "I was loved!" Sounds intense, but that's not really accurate. Let's break it down. Kawaigatte moratta! Kawaigatte, if I'm not mistaken, is an inflection of the transitive verb kawaigaru, which Jisho translates as "to be affectionate to; to treat tenderly; to dote on; to show one's love (for); to cherish." Other translations usually say something like, "He really doted on me." But essentially she’s saying, "He treated me with tenderness/affection" or, "He made me feel loved/cherished." 💖

So there you go! Not that a fan ship like Renmitsu even needs this kind of validation anyway, but it might be nice to have something you can keep in your back pocket for the next time someone is being annoying about it. There's enough here to show that they really have a lot of affection for each other. They're so adorable~!

(Side note: there are other examples of Mitsuri's attraction to him in the gaiden [pictured above] and in at least one of the light novels. I might write about that, too.)

There are rumours going around the mine the next day. Hushed tones that they've dug too deep, hit the Grey. Vander hears some of the superstitious miners claim they've displeased Janna and this is her punishment. There are grumbles that the company should stop digging the new shafts and let them go back to working on level two.

Usually, miners enjoy a drink at night and don't bother talking about things they can't change. There's a determined resignation, an acceptance that the work is tiring and dangerous but it's better than the alternative: starving to death or choking on toxic gas. This is the first time Vander hears the rumble of anger, an edge of bared teeth in the chatter.

He's not sure if Benzo hears it but Felicia catches his eye. She looks concerned, too. They keep working but Vander watches the miners around them, waiting for a fight to break out.

A few hours later, the rumours change. There's talk of some miner standing outside the elevator and making a fuss, refusing to keep working. Sometimes it happens – someone wakes up still drunk and causes a commotion – but there's only a handful of miners working on the elevator shaft and Vander knows Silco's one of them. If anyone was likely to dig his heels in and pick a fight with powerful people, it's Silco.

Vander leaves his pickaxe behind but keeps his gauntlets on. There's no one near the elevator at level one but Vander can hear raised voices echoing up the shaft. There's someone yelling about schedules and deadlines and then silence. A low rumble of some reply, and the yelling starts again.

Vander stands there, not sure what to do. Should he call the elevator and go down there? Would it only make things worse? Would the topsiders take one look at Vander's size and feel threatened? Would Silco appreciate the support or would he consider it interference?

Vander knows how quickly an argument can turn into a brawl. How raised voices can suddenly become raised fists. He doesn't want to make things worse.

He's still standing there, frozen in indecision, when the elevator starts to move. It rumbles up from the depths and then Silco steps out, with three kids a few years younger than them. One of the boys is crying, shuddering as he gasps for breath. Silco's eyes flick across to Vander but he doesn't seem surprised by his presence.

"The Grey?" Vander asks and Silco nods.

"Take him back to the dorm," Silco tells them. "Stay there with him."

The three of them scurry off, clearly relieved to be away from someone crazy enough to argue with a topsider. When they've vanished from sight, Silco turns to Vander. "We need to talk to a supervisor."

He needs to plead his case before the engineers complain about him. Vander considers their options. "Franco," he says and starts leading Silco down the tunnels.

Franco is dark skinned and solid, not far off Vander's size. He's been at the mine for years, worked his way up, dour but fair. He's talking to one of the runners when they find him.

They stand there, waiting impatiently, until he crooks his finger and beckons them closer. "What is it?"

"Silco got mouthy with the engineers," Vander says, cutting to the bones of the situation. "Walked off the job with the other miners."

Franco doesn't immediately side with the Pilties, proving he was the right person to talk to. "Why?"

"Their timelines say they have to hit the next marker this week. The Grey is waist high in that elevator shaft," Silco says, eyes blazing but voice steady. "We can't work in that."

Franco watches them carefully but his expression doesn't give anything away. "You couldn't have put on a mask and worked it anyway?"

"The others didn't have masks," Silco bites back.

"So send them up. Let miners with masks go down." Franco crosses his arms. "Those engineers aren't idiots. They'll have noticed that at least a third of the miners here carry masks."

Vander tries not to flinch. He knows how many have bought masks from them, for a small steady profit.

"We don't have goggles. Even with the masks, how long will it be before the Grey blinds us?" Silco demands, stepping forward sharply. Vander anchors a hand on his shoulder, tries to tug him back. Silco tenses but he stills. "Why should we suffer for their deadline?"

"It's a job and you're being paid to do it. You don't like that shift, let someone else take it."

"Nobody should be taking it. They shouldn't expect us to–"

"You know how this works," Franco says firmly. "No one wants to do it, they'll offer more money until someone does. You can't make someone else starve because you don't like the risk."

The corner of Silco's mouth twists up and for a moment, Vander fears he'll start yelling. Silco glares but thankfully he keeps his mouth shut.

"So," Franco asks him, "are you giving up the shift?"

There's a snarl to Silco's mouth as he says, "Yes."

"Working out the day on level one?"

Silco looks at him and Vander shrugs. The day's half gone and meeting quota in a crowded mine has become harder. There's a chance Silco could work all afternoon and still not dig enough to be paid.

"No," Silco says, mouth pinched and angry.

Franco nods. "I'll talk to a few workers, find out who wants the rest of today's shift. Tomorrow, I expect to see you working on level one."

"Thanks, Franco," Vander says before Silco can argue it. Of course they're going to take him off that job – there's no reward for being a troublemaker down here. Getting off with only one day's lost pay is lucky, all things considered.

Silco follows him back to where Vander's working with Benzo and Felicia, ostensibly to check if there's anything he can work on alone this afternoon, but Vander notices the tremble in his hand, the adrenaline comedown. If Silco needs to take a little time around people he knows, that's fine.

harper s3 yj thoughts so far

fell into a depression watching the cabin burn and didn't do anything to help keep it burning. she had accepted death at that point

it took her a minute after winter broke to come to her senses and find that will to live

helped tai build the shelters during the time jump

isn't vocally against shauna but is more on mari's side during their beefs. mostly bc she is also a little shit and relates to that in mari.

i think she did try with shauna. she had a lot of empathy for her. but eventually she just couldn't do that anymore.

this really changes with the trial <3

she has a strong sense of justice, and she truly did believe ben

she also does what she is told and that is a really interesting contrast to play around with esp in a yj setting where she is both going to try to free people and will follow orders and is a good soldier. wants peace but will keep fighting if that is what they have. wants to survive (most of the time) but has severe survivors guilt and struggles.

thinking about kane's who we want to be doesn't always win quote and how applicable it is to yj. this was esp true after javi, so i think working overtime to make sure it doesn't happen with ben.

at first, she might have bought into the stories about how he burned down the cabin. i think in general she really likes listening to van tell stories

this starts to fade as well because it is more about their experiences, which she doesn't vibe with the spins on that

she makes little jokes at the nat holy leader stuff. it probably falls flat with others, but i think nat appreciates it (my own interpretation. obviously nat rpers can have different thoughts there!)

she makes little digs about shauna that is probably not great. i can't think of any examples rn but i think after lottie, akilah, and travis change their votes it def comes out at them (v where's your mom, monty?)

she still holds on to that ben is their coach mentality and is struggling with letting javi die, but she cannot actively kill ben

she does pick a card because she has to; she still recognizes that refusing would not be good

she ends up going with lottie, akilah, and travis because she doesn't trust lottie right now. she saw what lottie did to travis earlier, and she saw what the gas did. she is not a fan. i think she truly believes (and says) that lottie is just using them to try to connect to something she lost and taking it out on them because of it.

she's probably most afraid of lottie because of it, actually. shauna is scary, but shauna is almost a familiar scary. people who lash out because they are in pain and hold firm to their beliefs because they can't shake them is familiar. lottie is uncharted territory. someone who causes pain while truly believing it is good. someone who is trying so hard to do something else and connect to something that harper doesn't understand.

she's usually very curious and asks questions, but she's also skeptical and javi dying pivoted things for her. she can't put her faith in the wilderness. these were HER actions, not something else. what SHE did. i am sure her not distancing herself from this works really well for the group.

i think she thinks there is SOMETHING going on, but she doesn't think it's some mystical connection to the wilderness. don't ask her what else though she can't tell you.

case by case basis for whether or not she was part of the cave gas scene because i think it fits and aligns with the jobi nuts + the original harper death scene. i've kept in her canon her getting v sick off the jobi nuts, and i think i combined that with the shrooms from s1 but it would also be applicable here

even if she did not personally experience it, she would have been wary about it all anyway. she said drugs are meant for fun not forced visions

i do think forced / coerced drugs is a sore point for her too and the perception that lottie is weaponizing that is really uncomfortable to her

i'm all over the place because trying to collect my thoughts across the episodes but if it wasn't clear she did not change her vote

she definitely cried when ben was found guilty but hid it away as anger and stormed off (to plan how to set him free. i think she does need some level of support from others to attempt to do that, though. being the only one would not work. akilah and travis changed their votes, and they were the two she would have looked to for this, so that dashed a lot of hopes. she really is not happy with them for this and feels personally betrayed by them doing this, even though it isn't personal. it does make her 10x more wary of lottie and that influence, though)

she has never run faster than when she had a reason to save ben

finds time to check in with travis after because she is acutely aware of the parallel between him knocking ben over when he was about to be shot and him knocking nat out of the way when she was about to be slit

probably ends up in ben's place staring down all of them just bc i think that would be a hot shot. she'll move out of the way for akilah to have her moment

as soon as shauna and melissa disappear, she's in the pen helping ben :(((

i don't think she can do much but she'll stay there with him screaming all night instead of retreating to the huts :(((
