A New Judgment Chapter 1: WrestleMania 39 (Poly Judgment Day Fic)
Tumblr media
Written by @scarletraine who can’t seem to remember to post to this godforsaken hellsite so has me post here for your enjoyment!
Part 1. Part 2. Part 3. Part 4. Part 5. Part 6. Part 7.
Nessa sits between Aalyah and Angie ringside at WrestleMania at the request, at the insistence, of Rey and Angie. She is wracked with nerves having not seen Dominik or heard from Dominik in months since he broke up with her over text saying,
"Nessa we're over, I'm sorry but you don't deserve this, you deserve better." He never responded to anything else and ghosted her. Dom's family kept in touch, taking her out for her birthday and such, and filled in some blanks but nothing is making sense and she is conflicted and hurt. Nessa starts playing with the bracelet that Dominik gave her on their anniversary which belonged to his grandmother and means a lot to her and to his family. She starts to fidget more as Dominik makes his entrance and makes his way down to the ring.
Aalyah sees how nervous and fidgety Nessa is and gently places her hand on Nessa's shoulder.
"You look hot girl, he is going to regret what he has done," Aalyah tries to boost Nessa who only shrugs her shoulders, her black lace top corset matching her ripped jeans, accentuating what she feels are her best assets, but Angie was the one who picked the top and Nessa is suspicious as to their motives to bring her there tonight even though they have been nothing but welcoming to her.
Nessa's eyes never leave Dominik's body as he makes his way down to the ring and begins to strut as he enters it. He faces his mom, sister, and ex, his expression changes for a split second, Nessa would have missed it if she blinked, he almost looked remorseful. Aalyah sees it as well and leans over again so she could be heard by Nessa.
"Are you ok sis, I know this can't be easy for you," Nessa shrugs again, trying to keep from speaking so her voice doesn't break. Angie looks at the young girl she has grown to love as another daughter in the few years she was with Dominik, getting with him shortly before the pandemic when he met her at her job.
Everyone but Nessa stands as Eddie Guerrero's music comes on and Rey comes out in a lowrider being driven by Snoop Dogg. She doesn't see however, her eyes don't leave Dominik, the hurt evident on her face. Every time he looks over at his mom and sister he never meets her gaze. As Rey enters the ring Dom puffs out his chest acting tough. It isn't until the match starts that she says anything to them.
"I can't do this I'm sorry..." She moves to get up with tears in her eyes to leave but Angie grabs her wrist.
"Mija please. I know this is hard, but we are here to support them and hopefully put this mess to bed."
Nessa looks at her incredulously, "How can I support either. I still love Dom but he broke my heart and it is clear he doesn't feel the same anymore if he ever did. I love Rey like a father, and I can't side with either over the other I'm sorry." She tries to gently pull her arm away, but notices Angie's sad eyes flicker to the camera aimed at them and then to the fighting men in the ring. Nessa groans and plops down, hiding her face in her hands, realizing the commentators are probably having a field day with what she said. She jerks her head up as the crowd gasps and Angie and Aalyah stand up cheering. Nessa sees Dominik between the turnbuckles and a belt in Rey's hand. She stands up mortified no longer caring about the camera.
"Rey, don't do this please!" She screams out, her own past flashing before her eyes and not wanting Dom to experience this embarrassment. She feels Angie grab her arm again but yanks it away, looking on mortified as Rey spanks Dominik. She looks at Rey, betrayal evident on her face as Dominik rolls out of the ring and stands in front of them. Dominik barely glances at her and It is at that moment she realizes why they insisted on bringing her, why she is there. To distract Dom, to guilt him back to his family and her and she feels disgusted.
"What the hell was that?" Dominik yells at his mom over the crowd
"You deserve it!" Angie yells back, Aalyah standing beside Nessa, her drink cup in her hand. Dominik grabs it and glances down before throwing it at her, the liquid also getting on Nessa. Without thinking Nessa is halfway over the barricade holding Aalyah back.
"Aalyah no, don't get involved!" She struggles to say as she holds back Aalyah. Rey hops out of the ring and runs over to check on them only to be jumped by Dominik and sling shot into the corner of the ring. Dominik then grabs rey and slides him back into the ring and gets back in himself taunting the crowd smacking his shoulders.
Nessa stays standing, one hand on the barricade, the other biting her thumbnail, anxiously watching as the match goes on. She feels a gentle tug at her belt loop and looks down to see Aalyah gesturing to her seat. After a moment of debating, she takes her seat. She leans over to Angie, her hand covering her lips so people can't read them and whispers to her.
"Did you insist I come to try and manipulate or distract him so he will come back or lose?" She stares at Angie's face as she thinks of an answer. However, the hesitation is answer enough and she stands back up, unable to hide the betrayal she feels.
"I'm sorry sweetheart we are desperate," Angie tries to grab Nessa's hand only for it to be snatched away. She watches as Dom flings his dads neck on the top rope and jumps out of the ring, pulling Rey out before sauntering back over to them. Worry flashes across his eyes looking at Nessa's expression but he controls his expression and turns to his mom who is standing again.
"What are you going to do about it, you're not going to do anything!" he taunts his mom. Nessa can't hear anything else because she is so shocked when Angie slaps Dom who turns around shocked with his hand on his cheek. Rey comes up behind him and pushes him into the corner of the ring headfirst. He then turns and kisses Angie and mouths ' I'm sorry' to Nessa before throwing Dominik back into the ring. She flinches every time Rey lands a hit on Dominik and Cheers when Dominik kicks out of the Pin.
"Why are you cheering him on, he broke your heart?" Aalyah asks, annoyed and confused.
"Because you guys were wrong to bring me to guilt or distract him, that was wrong to me and him. He needs someone in his corner. Even with the heartbreak I couldn't go against him." Nessa sighs in relief as Dom kicks out of another pin.
"Not only did he dump you, he did it by text with no explanation. He doesn't deserve your support." Aalyah tries to convince Nessa to support her dad instead of Dominik.
"Because when you love someone, you want what is best for them even if it isn't you anymore. If Rhea and The Judgment Day is that for him and it makes him happy that's all I care about." She sees some people nod in agreement.
"I understand and respect that, but I can't condone the disrespect, he needs to be taught a lesson." Angie claps as Rey lands another hit.
"You mean disrespect like calling up your son's heartbroken ex who hasn't seen or heard from him in months, making her sit and watch him thrown around by his father in an attempt to manipulate or distract him. The same ex who has a history of being abused and you know," Nessa's rant silences any response Angie would have.
Nessa is on her feet and watches as Dom flings Rey and catches his neck on the top rope and falls to the mat. Dominik jumps out of the ring and pulls Rey out and tosses him to the ground and heads over to them again. Worried flashes over his eyes for a moment as he glances at Nessa before focusing on his mother who stood up.
"What are you going to do about it, you're not going to do anything!" he taunts, and Nessa can't breathe, a roaring in her ears blocks out what was said next as Angie slaps Dom who turns away holding his face and the crowd cheers. Nessa looks disgusted at Angie and Rey gets up and attacks Dominik and flings him into the same corner as before. With Dom on the ground writhing in pain Rey turns around and kisses Angie and mouths I'm sorry to Nessa who only glares at him as he tosses Dominik back into the ring.
She realizes she fully chose Dominik's side as she flinches every time Rey lands a hit and cheers when kicks out of the pin. Aalyah looks at Nessa annoyed,
"Why do you cheer him on? He betrayed us, betrayed you."
"Because he has no one in his corner and he deserves that. He didn't betray me, he broke my heart. There is a difference. You were wrong to bring me here to distract or manipulate him." She answers as Rey pins Dominik again. She sighs in relief as he kicks out again.
"Why do you want to be the one in his corner since he broke your heart and ghosted you." Aalyah pries.
Not caring about the cameras Nessa answers, "Because i still love him Aalyah, as i said a minute ago, so stop trying to turn me against him." Nessa begins to relax a little when Finn and Damien come out to the ring, she still worries for Rey. While she is hurt at their actions, she doesn't want either to truly hurt themselves or the other. She flinches as Rey is thrown into a turnbuckle and is seemingly knocked out.
"Dom get up and pin him!" Nessa yells out wanting this to be over. She doesn't see but Finn and Damien share a look and nod in an unspoken agreement. Finally, Dom pins his father and Nessa groans as Rey kicks out again. "I just want this to be over..." She mutters to herself before cussing and slapping the barrier as Rey hits the 619.
She is happy but conflicted as Damien and Finn hop onto the apron to interfere. Damien pulls Rey down and takes off his jacket, laying it in the corner of the ring. She is biting her nails again as they both fall out of the ring, the wind knocked out of them in front of Finn and Damien. The LWO runs out and down the ramp attacking Finn and Damien before they could interfere again.
"Come on Dom!!!" She cheers as he sets up his own 618 and then tries to finish with a frog splash and pins his father. She throws up her hands in frustration as Rey kicks out yet again. She stays silent as Dom unties the turnbuckle pad only to walk over to Damien's jacket as the ref retires the pad, from Damian's jacket Dom pulls out a chain. She shakes her head in worry only to be partially relieved as Bad Bunny runs up and snatches the chain out of Dominik's hand.
"Dom look out!" She yells out trying to warn him about Rey behind him who drop kicks him into another 619 set up and a pin. Her face drops as the ref counts to three and Dom is out of the ring by Damien and Finn in front of her. Angie and Aalyah already in the ring celebrating with him having jumped over the barricade. Rey gestures for her to join and she shakes her head no. Finn supports Dom's weight as Damien offers his hand and helps her over the barricade.
"Come with us to the back, Mamita."
"Only to make sure he is ok then I'll go," She responds, ignoring the nickname. They slowly back up the ramp, Nessa looking at Dom worried and looking at the ring betrayed. Once they are backstage and past the gorilla, she is still aware of the cameras following them so she controls her face and walks tall and is almost shocked when Damien speaks again, his deep voice calming to her.
"So, what do you do Mamita?" He asks as they near medical.
"She is a nurse." Dominik groans out the answer supporting more of his weight and Finn starts laughing.
"I'm a charge nurse now for the Pediatric unit at the hospital now Dom."
"Well thanks for your support of our Dom Dom." Nessa hears an Australian accent from behind them as the doctors and nurses check Dom. She turns and sees Rhea and gulps.
"Just wanted to make sure you are ok Dom Dom and to meet this beautiful lady who went against your family to support you." She says as she tucks a loose strand of Nessas hair behind her ear. She can't help the blush that forms. Rhea turns to Dom,
"You do have good taste Dom Dom, I'll see you all after my match" She then turns to Nessa again, "Please stick around till after my match I would like to discuss something with you after." Nessa stands there shocked as Rhea leaves the room.
"Your new girlfriend seems nice." Nessa comments as she watches the medical staff evaluate Dominik. Damien and Finn share the same look as before.
"Well actually we are all together, love." Finn responds and Dom stares at the floor avoiding Nessas gaze.
"Oh that's cool too. Thank you for looking out for him, just make sure you keep each other safe and happy." She accepts what Finn admitted.
"We heard what you said while we were waiting backstage and we admire your loyalty and devotion, mariposa." Damien places his hand on Nessa's shoulder and pulls her into a hug. Her immediate instinct was to pull away but she didn't. It was strangely comforting, even more so when Finn pats her back.
"You're fine Dominic, just going to be sore for a while." The doctor announces before leaving the room. She fiddles with the bracelet again before unclasping it and walking over placing it in Dominik's hand.
"Thank you for letting me be a part of the history of this. It means a lot. Goodbye, Dom." She kisses his cheek and makes her way to the door. She opens it and sees Triple H with his hand raised poised to knock. She steps to the side to let him in to talk to his talent.
"I'm actually here to see you miss?" he leads off silently asking what to call her.
"Klein," she hears a snicker from what she assumes is Damien, "But as you probably know my first name is Nessa." She shakes his outstretched hand.
"I want to talk about what happened out there," He explains and Nessas smile drops to a look of worry and the other three men in the room share the look. Noticing this Triple H clarifies, "You aren't in trouble, but there is business to discuss if you would follow me to my office." he steps aside gesturing for her to come out the room. She nods and follows him out the room as the men of The Judgement Day share a confused look.

Chapter 11: CLARISSE BLOWS UP EVERYTHING
"You guys just sit back and chill-ax," Will told, tugging on Nico's sleeve hopefully. "Magnus has been getting snacks, so we'll just grab some of everything and bring it back too!"
"Is that what those jokes about a buffet were?" Percy asked, he was the least motivated to crawl out of his beanbag as fatigue was already setting in again. Whoever said words don't hurt had never read this book!
The others gave it no passing thought as Thalia lounged back comfortably too, staring up at the shadowed ceiling and twirling her bracelet around with a pensive look. Jason went over to see Hearth, Magnus, and Alex were already having one of their ASL talks.
Nico waited until he was sure Percy was out of earshot in the first room with a fridge before asking, "so did Zeus really go from denying Kronos is coming back to blaming it on Chiron in the span of a year?"
"No, Kronos is his dad," Will admitted with a sad smile, already pulling out a whole pizza with different toppings every other slice. "He doesn't like to talk about it much, but, yeah. That's why they blamed Thalia's tree on Chiron instead. Messed up, huh?" He pulled out a pile of perfectly gooey, melted s'mores next.
"I'll say," he scowled for the friendly enough centaur, even if the head of activities had always given him the same uneasy look as everyone else in that camp about what to do with him, at least Chiron had never been outright rude to him.
In this short time, Will had already pulled out a wide assortment of food, practically covering the bed in as many options as he could think of, watching Nico intently the whole time. He hadn't once reached for anything though, so Will asked just to be sure, "anything specific you're going to want?"
Nico resisted the urge to roll his eyes as he plucked up a singular french-fry. "This'll do." He tried to smile like he was hoping Will would laugh it off. He should have known better at this point.
"You've got to eat down here," his scowl seemed to have more weight than anybody else Nico had met, perhaps because it set so firmly into his face, an effort to keep it there instead of his natural smiles.
"No, I don't," he said back without concern. "Child of Hades thing, I don't need to eat as much as-" the lie was passing easily from his mouth, he could barely remember a time he wasn't lying to somebody after Bianca's death.
"Bullshit," Will called out at once, and Nico stopped dead, the french-fry fell from his fingers. He felt such a shock rock through him he glanced over his shoulder to make sure Thalia hadn't appeared.
He didn't ask how Will knew he was lying. Instead, he threw him a bone, the least he could do after Will had been so friendly to him. "It, it's for practice," he finally relented. Couldn't tell him to much, it was still weird to him why Will was asking at all.
"Practice," he repeated, drawing the word out uncomfortably like a hiss, but it didn't even cross Nico's mind to mock him right now.
"Yeah, I'm going on a trip, and might not get food around every corner. Relax, I'll eat something small later." Tartarus probably didn't have magical refrigerators to quench his every desire, he actually needed to make a pit stop to find those seeds just in case this took to long-
"Nico," Will sounded so angry he startled and looked around for a monster before those piercing blue eyes kept looking right at him. "You're always off on some trip! You need to come back to camp, ask for a quest to do this right, let me, somebody help!"
"I don't need your help!" He instantly snapped back, but there was no force to his words for the touch of concern still resonating in him Will had said that at all. "You, you don't even know what you're asking for."
"Then tell me. I'll help." Will didn't look away, didn't even flinch from meeting his gaze, had just blindly signed up for a trip to Tartarus! Will Solace was officially the most frustrating, stubborn person Nico had ever met, and he laughed. Percy and Chiron might actually kick him out of Camp officially if they heard if he was trying to draw anybody else into this. Reason number two he needed to go alone.
Will raised an unimpressed brow, and Nico once again sidestepped by lightly fibbing, "that's not necessary, Jason has some friends, I'll figure it out with them."
"Oh," Will finally deflated and looked ready to let it go, which somehow made Nico feel worse than if he'd tried to insist anyways. Idiot, he chastised himself. He'd never survive down there.
Nico swiped up a fried chicken leg blindly and walked out before he had to make any more half-promises.
Will watched him go with the strangest feeling he usually only got while watching Katie Gardner flirt with Connor Stoll. Jealous.
He doesn't need you along, he reminded himself as he picked the rest of the food up to follow. You'd just slow him down, barely ever leaving camp and having no real clue what was out there. Jason probably had some healing friend too, at least he was getting help from someone. What little comfort he did take from that thought carried him into putting all the plates out on the table, smiling and waving off the thanks from the others it had literally been no trouble.
Then he saw Jason and Nico whispering quietly, Nico was picking off little bits of the fried skin and chicken and eating normally enough, so he instantly turned away. He really was happy if Nico had made a friend with the weird kid who kept using Roman names, and he wouldn't keep bothering Nico now. He snatched up the book and decided he wasn't very hungry himself as he started reading before even Percy had finished his first plate.
"That wasn't a very long lunch," Magnus said in surprise to see Will shuffling pages around the book. He hadn't even gotten the chance to tell Hearthstone maybe he'd like a nap, but at least Jason hadn't stuck around long.
Alex was already laughing at the new chapter title though as he grabbed up a bowl of real, deep fried, not-kale chips and slathered them in chili while calling to Percy, "careful Perce, or she might take your title away!"
"Didn't she just blow up everything?" Percy seemed to be agreeing, snatching pepperoni floating around him from his destroyed pizza before they could settle on the plate. "What else is left? A whale?"
"Hopefully not the quest itself," Jason sighed as he flopped back into his seat with a bowl of fruit.
"Just keep practicing those first six," Magnus told Alex when he sat back down. "I'll quiz you later."
"Done deal," he winked again and turned to Will, leaving Magnus staring at the side of his head with no urge to do the same.
"You are in so much trouble," Clarisse said.
"Story of my life," Percy nodded without surprise.
"What's Tantalus going to do, drown you in bar-b-q sauce?" But there was a note of unease in Magnus's voice like he wasn't sure if he was kidding or not as he did drag his eyes away from Alex.
"Hopefully I won't have to find out," Percy sighed as he rubbed at his temple. If all went well, the tree should have been healed and Chiron should have gotten his job back! If not, well, he wasn't sure he wanted to hear the other outcomes.
We'd just finished a ship tour we didn't want,
"Was it straight to the poop deck?" Alex asked. "Wait, or the stockade? What's ship prison called?"
"The brigadier," Percy at least knew why this information came naturally to him, "or the brig for short. Haven't you ever seen a pirate movie? The captain always says take him to the brig at least once."
"Must have missed those," Alex shrugged, though he looked plenty interested in changing that.
Nico was looking at Percy again, and being as invisible as usual as he bit his lip against the urge to go to his side and laugh about all the awesome pirate stories he'd made up himself. Percy would just laugh at him, or laugh him off, and gods forbid he ever get that close to him without combusting.
through dark rooms overcrowded with dead sailors. We'd seen the coal bunker, the boilers and engine, which huffed and groaned like it would explode any minute.
Percy winced uneasily and the last of his crust fell to the floor. He'd lost his appetite all of a sudden, and Thalia biting her lip and not looking at him wasn't a promising indication.
We'd seen the pilothouse and the powder magazine and gunnery deck (Clarisse's favorite) with two Dahlgren smoothbore cannons on the port and starboard sides and a Brooke nine-inch rifled gun fore and aft—all specially refitted to fire celestial bronze cannon balls.
Jason's eyes were glazed over by then like he couldn't decide if that was the coolest battleship he'd ever heard of, or the strangest. He knew with absolute confidence he'd never been on a boat before regardless, so probably the first.
Nico couldn't help an amused snort at the expression. He didn't know much about that Roman camp, but he'd already picked up on the uneasy look's Jason had given Percy nearly every time his dad was mentioned; he didn't seem to be a fan of Neptune. He'd probably avoided the sea like Percy did the air. Jason had bounced up the second he'd entered the room and been asking him with great eagerness what he did know about the Sea of Monsters though, so hopefully his curiosity would eventually trump misgivings. It hadn't been much though, so Jason was back to watching Will intently the moment his mind had finished imagining it all.
Will didn't seem to be reading with as much bubbliness as usual though, and everyone was noticing. Nico sat back in his seat with surprising guilt he told himself to ignore, he'd done nothing wrong by making sure everybody stayed out of this until he came back with proof of Gaea, then he'd take all the help he could get.
Everywhere we went, dead Confederate sailors stared at us, their ghostly bearded faces shimmering over their skulls. They approved of Annabeth because she told them she was from Virginia. They were interested in me, too, because my name was Jackson—like the Southern general—but then I ruined it by telling them I was from New York. They all hissed and muttered curses about Yankees.
"Can't say I was really rooting for them to like me, but them disliking me feels more foreboding," Percy muttered.
Will smiled without humor as he remembered the boat being summoned in the harbor and Silena wishing Clarisse good luck. One of the ghosts had asked if she was related to P.G.T Beauregard* as Clarisse was packing to go aboard and she'd run off as if offended.
Tyson was terrified of them. All through the tour, he insisted Annabeth hold his hand, which she didn't look too thrilled about.
"I'm not much of a hand-holder myself," Alex sympathized, "but he did just save her from a Hydra! If that's all he wants in return, it's nice she's helping him."
It was probably the nicest thing Alex he'd said while here.
Finally, we were escorted to dinner. The CSS Birmingham captain's quarters were about the size of a walk-in closet, but still much bigger than any other room on board. The table was set with white linen and china.
"I've never had a walk-in closet, you can fit a table in them?" Magnus seemed to be struggling with this as much as he did some monsters.
"We had to suck it in to sit in the chairs smashed against the wall, not exactly luxury," Percy disagreed what 'fit'.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, potato chips, and Dr. Peppers were served by skeletal crewmen. I didn't want to eat anything served by ghosts, but my hunger overruled my fear.
"I don't get it," Nico said, looking around at the others and trying not to especially watch Percy. "If they're summoned back right they're practically normal. Can drive, cook, hold weapons or anything."
"I'm concerned why you know that," Jason admitted.
Nico froze as he realized he was getting a little to comfortable down here, again, and opened his mouth with a quick lie coming to mind when-
"Just part of the pranks that go around camp," Will shrugged, emphasizing the no big deal of it. "Percy hasn't been around them as much, but the Ares campers love to brag about it when they occasionally manage it."
"That was terrifying, thank you," Magnus shivered.
Nico still didn't get it and now felt even more like a freak of nature as clearly he was the only one, but a rush of gratitude swept most of that aside as Will had gone right back to reading like nothing had happened, and even more, Thalia and Percy exchanged a curious look but clearly weren't going to contradict that.
"Tantalus expelled you for eternity," Clarisse told us smugly. "Mr. D said if any of you show your face at camp again, he'll turn you into squirrels and run you over with his SUV."
"Sounds like a waste of gas when he could make a tiger appear to do it," Alex pointed out, and yep that was more on brand.
"I'm sure Grover will agree when we get him back," Percy rolled his eyes.
"Did they give you this ship?" I asked.
"'Course not. My father did."
"Ares?"
Clarisse sneered. "You think your daddy is the only one with sea power? The spirits on the losing side of every war owe a tribute to Ares. That's their curse for being defeated. I prayed to my father for a naval transport and here it is. These guys will do anything I tell them. Won't you, Captain?"
"Woah," Jason said in appreciation, now that sounded like something he could wrap his head around about Mars.
The captain stood behind her looking stiff and angry. His glowing green eyes fixed me with a hungry stare. "If it means an end to this infernal war, ma'am, peace at last, we'll do anything. Destroy anyone."
"None of that made this existing feel any better," Magnus clarified with an 'ugh,' face.
'Remind me later how much you dislike ghosts when I tell you about einherjar,' Hearth told him with an amusing smile that didn't amuse Magnus. He'd finger spelled that last word and then showed him the sign for it which did nothing to encourage him.
Clarisse smiled. "Destroy anyone. I like that."
"Of course she does," Percy sighed, "like everybody on this quest?" Where were the other two companions she was supposed to have, hopefully more sensible kids from camp!
Tyson gulped.
"Clarisse," Annabeth said, "Luke might be after the Fleece, too. We saw him. He's got the coordinates and he's heading south. He has a cruise ship full of monsters—"
"Good! I'll blow him out of the water."
"I will pause to admire her confidence," Will told with an almost natural smile again as he punned his own name, causing the others to groan and Nico to roll his eyes at him.
"You don't understand," Annabeth said. We have to combine forces. Let us help you—"
"No!" Clarisse pounded the table. "This is my quest, smart girl! Finally I get to be the hero, and you two will not steal my chance."
Thalia couldn't imagine how that must feel, to often being forced into the center of attention thanks to her dad whether she wanted to be or not. She was sorry for Clarisse though, and might not be alive right now without her making it back alone, so she couldn't scoff to much at the childish idea to her of wanting to impress.
"Where are your cabin mates?" I asked. "You were allowed to take two friends with you, weren't you?"
"They didn't ... I let them stay behind. To protect the camp."
'Does not play well with others' was one of the first things they'd realized about this girl back when she'd first tried to induct Percy into the toilet royalty, but this was a new extreme. Had her own siblings, everybody at camp refused to go? Was it just faith Percy would come back and save them all before Clarisse had left the state of New York?
"You mean even the people in your own cabin wouldn't help you?"
"Shut up, Prissy! I don't need them! Or you!"
Sounds lonely, Jason kept to himself. A gut feeling told him he'd been on quests, but there was something in that same feeling that made him question if he'd been alone on them too...or at the very least felt this burden Clarisse was shouldering alone.
"Clarisse," I said, "Tantalus is using you. He doesn't care about the camp. He'd love to see it destroyed. He's setting you up to fail."
"No! I don't care what the Oracle—" She stopped her-self.
"Not another one of those things!" Magnus protested.
"I'm curious if Annabeth or Percy did ask for this same quest if they'd have gotten the same prophecy," Alex admitted.
"That's a really good question," Will considered. "The future is a tangled mess, my dad's tried explaining it a few times and it's just a pure headache. Theoretically the outcome is dependent on who partakes in the quest, but prophecies have been in place for centuries before they come true which means some parts of them are set points in time that must happen." Clarisse had never told anyone her prophecy though, so he couldn't be any more certain.
"Well, we all know that thing's got more double meaning than a riddle, homo phone-"
"Homophone," Magnus corrected.
"So we won't know until we finish," Percy finished with an exasperated look at Annabeth's cousin.
"What?" I said. "What did the Oracle tell you?"
"Nothing." Clarisse's ears turned pink. "All you need to know is that I'm finishing this quest and you're not helping. On the other hand, I can't let you go ..."
"So we're prisoners?" Annabeth asked.
"Guests. For now."
Percy twitched uncomfortably at the idea of being an involuntary guest, again. First the hotel, now this, not to mention where he was currently trapped. Could he go just one year of his life without being held prisoner?
Clarisse propped her feet up on the white linen tablecloth and opened another Dr. Pepper.
The snide comment was on the tip of Alex's tongue Clarisse would get along with Luke with that kind of display, but he bit it off and amazingly didn't say it. He remembered Annabeth saying last year how the campers who lived there year around were the ones who went to visit Olympus, and had specifically named Luke and Clarisse. Now she'd been betrayed in a sense by both of them back to back. Annabeth might not be here, but she had a suspicion Will at least was a year-rounder as well as often as he called that camp his home, so that was probably why he was being a little more stiff than usual while reading.
"Captain, take them below. Assign them hammocks on the berth deck. If they don't mind their manners, show them how we deal with enemy spies."
"I have a feeling it'll involve something worse than old plumbing this time too," Thalia said grimly. Clarisse hadn't tried to pull that stunt on her the winter she'd been there, but it wasn't for lack of spirit on creativity the few times she had seen the daughter of Ares making some kind of war plans about being underground.
The dream came as soon as I fell asleep.
Grover was sitting at his loom, desperately unraveling his wedding train, when the boulder door rolled aside and the Cyclops bellowed, "Aha!"
Percy yelped as loud as Grover had. No, not yet! He hadn't enough time-
Will kept reading in that same calm, soothing way he had about himself. Everything was going to be okay, he seemed to be silently assuring even if he had to deliver the worst news.
Grover yelped. "Dear! I didn't—you were so quiet!"
"Unraveling!" Polyphemus roared. "So that's the problem!"
"Oh, no. I—I wasn't—"
"Come!" Polyphemus grabbed Grover around the waist and half carried, half dragged him through the tunnels of the cave. Grover struggled to keep his high heels on his hooves. His veil kept tilting on his head, threatening to come off.
Percy's hands were twitching in frustration as he chanted in his head not to reach for his pen, not to jump in and help. Just because he wasn't dead didn't mean Grover wasn't still trapped, that he'd never made it away from this horrible place!
The Cyclops pulled him into a warehouse-size cavern decorated with sheep junk. There was a wool-covered La-Z-Boy recliner and a wool-covered television set, crude bookshelves loaded with sheep collectibles—coffee mugs shaped like sheep faces, plaster figurines of sheep, sheep board games, and picture books and action figures. The floor was littered with piles of sheep bones, and other bones that didn't look exactly like sheep—the bones of satyrs who'd come to the island looking for Pan.
"I never wanted the answer of what would happen when you cross disturbingly isolated sheep farmer and little old ladies," Alex frowned. He wasn't the only one, they were all feeling a little jittery about that last detail. Thalia had lived on the streets long enough to be grateful the monsters disintegrated when killed for more than one reason, and it wasn't just ease of the mist covering it up. She didn't want to see that either, now here Grover was witnessing the worst.
\Polyphemus set Grover down only long enough to move another huge boulder. Daylight streamed into the cave, and Grover whimpered with longing. Fresh air!
A concept being denied to all of them now they all fought back a whimper for. One of those basic commodities you don't appreciate until you can't step outside your own front door and indulge in whenever you wanted.
The Cyclops dragged him outside to a hilltop overlooking the most beautiful island I'd ever seen.
It was shaped kind of like a saddle cut in half by an ax. There were lush green hills on either side and a wide valley in the middle, split by a deep chasm that was spanned by a rope bridge.
Beautiful streams rolled to the edge of the canyon and dropped off in rainbow-colored waterfalls. Parrots fluttered in the trees. Pink and purple flowers bloomed on the bushes.
Hundreds of sheep grazed in the meadows, their wool glinting strangely like copper and silver coins.
And at the center of the island, right next to the rope bridge, was an enormous twisted oak tree with something glittering in its lowest bough.
The Golden Fleece.
Even in a dream, I could feel its power radiating across the island, making the grass greener, the flowers more beautiful. I could almost smell the nature magic at work. I could only imagine how powerful the scent would be for a satyr.
Grover whimpered.
"This is an epic setting for the monster movie we could get going," Alex fluttered his hands like a movie director prompting his shot. "The clashing settings of the inside of his home and that landscape, expectation subversion and horror. Guy's sitting on a goldmine."
"I'm sure Hollywood would love your pitch," Percy told him in exasperation.
"Yes," Polyphemus said proudly. "See over there? Fleece is the prize of my collection! Stole it from heroes long ago, and ever since—free food! Satyrs come from all over the world, like moths to flame. Satyrs good eating! And now—"
Polyphemus scooped up a wicked set of bronze shears.
Riptide was in his hand without any call on his part, he could not just sit here and let that thing kill Grover while he slept- but then Thalia snatched his elbow and yanked him back into his seat, putting a plate of cheese enchiladas onto his lap.
"Eat, Jackson," she ordered. "Grover won't forgive you if you let those go to waste."
Percy's head was buzzing unpleasantly as he made his blade vanish back into his pocket and stabbed the first bite. She hadn't said he was okay, but he took the feeling implied by her words close to heart.
Grover yelped, but Polyphemus just picked up the nearest sheep like it was a stuffed animal and shaved off its wool. He handed a fluffy mass of it to Grover.
"Put that on the spinning wheel!" he said proudly. "Magic. Cannot be unraveled."
"Worst wedding present ever," Alex wasn't so sure he meant that though, it could be fun to work with.
"Hope he's not expecting some stellar dowry to make up for all this trouble," Nico said drolly.
"Oh ... well ..."
"Poor Honeypie!" Polyphemus grinned. "Bad weaver. Ha-ha! Not to worry. That thread will solve problem. Finish wedding train by tomorrow!"
"Isn't that ... thoughtful of you!"
"Hehe."
"But—but, dear," Grover gulped, "what if someone were to rescue—I mean attack this island?" Grover looked straight at me, and I knew he was asking for my benefit. "What would keep them from marching right up here to your cave?"
"Wifey scared! So cute! Not to worry. Polyphemus has state-of-the-art security system. Have to get through my pets."
"Pets?"
Grover looked across the island, but there was nothing to see except sheep grazing peacefully in the meadows.
"Now if they were llamas, I'd be a little more frightened," Jason looked around carefully to make sure he wasn't missing something, "but sheep?"
"Are there greek stories about killer sheep?" Magnus more clearly asked.
"I'm just going to assume yes," Percy sighed when he realized nobody was going to get an answer as he kept eyes on his plate.
"And then," Polyphemus growled, "they would have to get through me!"
He pounded his fist against the nearest rock, which cracked and split in half.
'I think I'd take him over the sheep though,' Hearth admitted. There was definitely a forbidding look on Thalia, Will, and Nico's face when prompted before that had nothing on that impact.
'I'm reserving judgment,' Magnus would rather not deal with either if he could get away with it.
"Now, come!" he shouted. "Back to the cave."
Grover looked about ready to cry—so close to freedom, but so hopelessly far. Tears welled in his eyes as the boulder door rolled shut, sealing him once again in the stinky torch-lit dankness of the Cyclops's cave.
Percy had had a good night's sleep with no nightmares, as much food at his disposal as he could want, and even friends surrounding him during this ordeal. As miserable, useless, and drained as he already felt again having no way to get back, all he wanted as he watched the half-empty plate be whisked away was to give his best friend a hug when he saw him again.
I woke to alarm bells ringing throughout the ship.
The captain's gravelly voice: "All hands on deck! Find Lady Clarisse! Where is that girl?"
"Probably on her way to destroy that guy for calling her Lady Clarisse," Nico said confidently, making Will snort beside him and grin again.
Then his ghostly face appeared above me. "Get up, Yankee.
"At least he didn't call you Yankee doodle," Alex offered.
Percy tapped his temple in frustration for a moment to the bafflement of all of them as he tried to explain what memory that could have jogged, "I think Annabeth once told me the backstory of that weird song."
"Remind me to ask," Magnus said eagerly.
Your friends are already above. We are approaching the entrance."
"The entrance to what?"
He gave me a skeletal smile. "The Sea of Monsters, of course."
"Is there going to be a moat around the ocean?" Jason was clearly still struggling a bit with this. "An archway in the middle of nowhere uselessly warning people away? A Do Not Enter Sign on a buoy?"
"I like your answers better than what's there," Thalia chuckled.
I stuffed my few belongings that had survived the Hydra into a sailor's canvas knapsack and slung it over my shoulder. I had a sneaking suspicion that one way or another I would not be spending another night aboard the CSS Birmingham.
"I should really have a talk with Clarisse's lack of hospitality scaring you off," Will agreed sardonically.
"I wish I had that feeling now," Percy sighed.
I was on my way upstairs when something made me freeze. A presence nearby—something familiar and unpleasant. For no particular reason, I felt like picking a fight. I wanted to punch a dead Confederate.
"I mean, usually you don't need outside help to have that feeling if you're a decent human being, but..." Magnus trailed off uncomfortably for where they now realized Clarisse might be.
The last time I'd felt like that kind of anger ...
Instead of going up, I crept to the edge of the ventilation grate and peered down into the boiler deck. Clarisse was standing right below me, talking to an image that shimmered in the steam from the boilers—a muscular man in black leather biker clothes, with a military haircut, red-tinted sunglasses, and a knife strapped to his side.
My fists clenched. It was my least favorite Olympian: Ares, the god of war.
"A feeling I can't even disagree with, which is really saying something considering the other contenders we've heard of," Jason muttered with a very put-out look. The Mars/ Ares debate still raged in the back of his mind even if it had quieted some since Ares's defeat. Always worse than any of the other gods shown, and hardest yet to shake when he was on display like right now.
"I don't want excuses, little girl!" he growled.
"Y-yes, father," Clarisse mumbled.
"You don't want to see me mad, do you?"
"No, father."
"No, father," Ares mimicked. "You're pathetic. I should've let one of my sons take this quest."
A shockwave couldn't have reverberated through the room with more power, the insult felt like a slap to each of them whether they'd experienced such horrible words personally or not. None of them had really been able to claim to like Clarisse much, but she'd shown at the very least she wasn't a bad person.
A comment like that even made those not in the know if Clarisse might be Luke's spy in the camp. It was just such a horrible thing to say, she was out here by herself risking her life to save a dying camp the two people in charge of it couldn't be bothered to care about only to have that thrown out? Who wouldn't turn against the gods?
"I'll succeed!" Clarisse promised, her voice trembling. "I'll make you proud."
"You'd better," he warned. "You asked me for this quest, girl. If you let that slimeball Jackson kid steal it from you—"
"But the Oracle said—"
"I DON'T CARE WHAT IT SAID!" Ares bellowed with such force that his image shimmered. "You will succeed. And if you don't ..."
He raised his fist. Even though he was only a figure in the steam, Clarisse flinched.
Percy had nearly destroyed the planet seeing his mom in such a state, the least he could do was contemplate drowning Ares without mercy now as he imagined storming in there to show this god just what he'd planned to do to Gabe in that moment.
"Do we understand each other?" Ares growled.
The alarm bells rang again. I heard voices coming toward me, officers yelling orders to ready the cannons.
I crept back from the ventilation grate and made my way upstairs to join Annabeth and Tyson on the spar deck.
"What's wrong?" Annabeth asked me. "Another dream?"
I nodded, but I didn't say anything. I didn't know what to think about what I'd seen downstairs. It bothered me almost as much as the dream about Grover.
Jason wished he could go back and reread his chapter about Percy stabbing Ares a couple more times now as that moment solidified in his head what nothing yet had. Whatever the gods were to him, it wasn't this. He wanted to go home. He would take Nico up on that offer and find out who Mars, Jupiter, and his gods really were to him.
Clarisse came up the stairs right after me. I tried not to look at her.
She grabbed a pair of binoculars from a zombie officer and peered toward the horizon. "At last. Captain, full steam ahead!"
This, at least, was Clarisse in her natural state. Will could barely imagine her as scared as Grover in the face of that monster, how he now wished he'd volunteered to go on this quest with her and get between her and Ares when somebody had needed to. At least she had come back a conquering hero, but he now feared how her own father would have punished her if she hadn't.
His eyes flickered to Nico and away, but he bit his tongue to stop himself asking if Hades was demanding anything similar. He'd been told to butt out and was getting help from Jason.
I looked in the same direction as she was, but I couldn't see much. The sky was overcast. The air was hazy and humid, like steam from an iron. If I squinted real hard, I could just make out a couple of dark fuzzy splotches in the distance.
My nautical senses told me we were somewhere off the coast of northern Florida, so we'd come a long way overnight, farther than any mortal ship should've been able to travel.
The engine groaned as we increased speed.
Tyson muttered nervously, "Too much strain on the pistons. Not meant for deep water."
Alex cleared his throat uneasily. It didn't feel right to be making trivial comments after hearing that, but he imagined if Clarisse had been here she'd be telling them all to quit gawping already. "How literally were we supposed to take that chapter title?"
"That's never a good thing to be asking," Percy reminded with an uncharacteristic coldness to his voice, his face as drawn and tight as if he were living a nightmare.
I wasn't sure how he knew that, but it made me nervous.
After a few more minutes, the dark splotches ahead of us came into focus. To the north, a huge mass of rock rose out of the sea—an island with cliffs at least a hundred feet tall. About half a mile south of that, the other patch of darkness was a storm brewing. The sky and sea boiled together in a roaring mass.
Percy felt a tingling sensation across the back of his neck and glanced at the ceiling before shaking it off and scolding himself for such thoughts. He wouldn't be able to feel something like that no matter who his dad was, but the thought didn't entirely fade from his mind there was a storm brewing, and it wasn't in Florida.
"Hurricane?" Annabeth asked.
"No," Clarisse said. "Charybdis."
Annabeth paled. "Are you crazy?"
"Jealous Percy?" Thalia grinned. "I thought Annabeth only asked you that."
"If something hasn't blossomed between her and Clarisse yet, I like my chances," Percy scoffed at her.
"Only way into the Sea of Monsters. Straight between Charybdis and her sister Scylla."
Clarisse pointed to the top of the cliffs, and I got the feeling something lived up there that I did not want to meet.
"Or would come back from meeting," Will assured. These were primordial monsters, one of the firsts. Whether a child of Gaea or Oceanus didn't seem clear, but he knew Percy could not kill them. Even if anaklusmos pierced them, they would never vanish long enough to make a difference.
"What do you mean the only way?" I asked. "The sea is wide open! Just sail around them."
Clarisse rolled her eyes. "Don't you know anything? If I tried to sail around them, they would just appear in my path again. If you want to get into the Sea of Monsters, you have to sail through them."
'Talk about your rock and a hard place,' Hearth protested.
"I hate magic," Magnus agreed.
"Thank you!" Percy waved at him in relief someone else had finally said it.
"What about the Clashing Rocks?" Annabeth said. "That's another gateway. Jason used it."
"I can't blow apart rocks with my cannons," Clarisse said. "Monsters, on the other hand ..."
"I swear she makes this difficult on purpose," Nico groaned.
"If she'd said something like her ship wasn't fast enough to beat the Symplegades, I'd understand," Jason agreed without thinking, "but this," he sighed at the idea that girl needed some strategy in her life. He was still waiting for that epic team up she and Annabeth could destroy anything together, this could have been a great moment to show that.
"Well she didn't bring a dove, so it's probably a moot point," Thalia reminded. Clarisse wouldn't listen to anybody else on this regardless of what path she'd picked.
"You are crazy," Annabeth decided.
"She can have that title as long as she doesn't make a bid for my Lordship next," Percy huffed. He had a really, really bad feeling about this.
"Watch and learn, Wise Girl." Clarisse turned to the captain. "Set course for Charybdis!"
"Aye, m'lady."
The engine groaned, the iron plating rattled, and the ship began to pick up speed.
"Clarisse," I said, "Charybdis sucks up the sea. Isn't that the story?"
"And spits it back out again, yeah."
"That doesn't mean you survive the trip!" Alex spluttered she seemed to be overlooking that important detail.
"What about Scylla?"
"She lives in a cave, up on those cliffs. If we get too close, her snaky heads will come down and start plucking sailors off the ship."
"Choose Scylla then," I said. "Everybody goes below deck and we chug right past."
"No!" Clarisse insisted. "If Scylla doesn't get her easy meat, she might pick up the whole ship.
"Then leave the ghosts up there to stall," Nico reminded, "free bait."
"Now see, that's a use I can almost get behind these things existing," Magnus nodded.
Besides, she's too high to make a good target. My cannons can't shoot straight up. Charybdis just sits there at the center of her whirlwind.
It was impossible to imagine what on earth sort of mortal body was going to contain anything being described here. For any of them, as nobody but Percy would have been near this. They just kept picturing one giant mouth sprouting out of the ocean with teeth on all sides vanishing you into a black pit never to be seen again until she exhaled you to the stars above.
We're going to steam straight toward her, train our guns on her, and blow her to Tartarus!"
She said it with such relish I almost wanted to believe her.
"Optimism," Will groaned.
"It, apparently, won't get you everywhere," Thalia blandly agreed. Even if Annabeth hadn't told her otherwise, she couldn't see how this would ever have gone well.
The engine hummed. The boilers were heating up so much I could feel the deck getting warm beneath my feet. The smokestacks billowed. The red Ares flag whipped in the wind.
As we got closer to the monsters, the sound of Charybdis got louder and louder—a horrible wet roar like the galaxy's biggest toilet being flushed. Every time Charybdis inhaled, the ship shuddered and lurched forward. Every time she exhaled, we rose in the water and were buffeted by ten-foot waves.
I tried to time the whirlpool. As near as I could figure, it took Charybdis about three minutes to suck up and destroy everything within a half-mile radius.
"Sounds like the worst wave pool in existence," Jason was starting to look a little gray and wondering if he could swim. He had no memory of it like everything else, so he didn't like his chances!
"I'll take the abandoned water park any day," Nico agreed. Hades probably had a water slide under that place straight to his domain to fast-track how many souls were lost in there.
To avoid her, we would have to skirt right next to Scylla's cliffs. And as bad as Scylla might be, those cliffs were looking awfully good to me.
Undead sailors calmly went about their business on the spar deck. I guess they'd fought a losing cause before, so this didn't bother them. Or maybe they didn't care about getting destroyed because they were already deceased. Neither thought made me feel any better.
"And what would make you feel better?" Will asked looking right at Percy, his gaze so focused on him all of a sudden like he was trying to pry his mind open as if it wasn't on full display in his hands. "All of them running around screaming?"
"Um, no," Percy blinked and looked at Thalia, then Nico for help. Will was acting weird, and he was pretty sure he didn't know him well enough to even be certain if this was normal weird or concerning weird. "Backup plan maybe?"
Annabeth stood next to me, gripping the rail. "You still have your thermos full of wind?"
"Well that's what we have Annabeth for," Magnus reminded with his own grin.
"Right, yeah, glad to help," Will rolled his eyes but at least stopped leering at him.
Nico flushed and looked to the ceiling and nobody needed a mind reader anymore to work out they'd missed some kind of debacle.
I nodded. "But it's too dangerous to use with a whirl-pool like that. More wind might just make things worse."
"What about controlling the water?" she asked. "You're Poseidon's son. You've done it before."
She was right. I closed my eyes and tried to calm the sea, but I couldn't concentrate.
Charybdis was too loud and powerful. The waves wouldn't respond.
"I—I can't," I said miserably.
Nico's ears pricked in confusion, his mind flagged on that sentence as he tried to realize its existence. It was possible that creatures even older than Poseidon could dominate his control, it was even in the realm of possibility Percy himself wasn't strong enough with his own powers yet to be pulling such a stunt.
Regardless of the answer, Thalia smacked her friend on the shoulder and laughed, "don't worry, Annabeth won't hold this over you."
"What a relief," Percy answered honestly though, he was starting to feel pretty useless on this quest in the freaking ocean!
"We need a backup plan," Annabeth said. "This isn't going to work."
"Annabeth is right," Tyson said. "Engine's no good."
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"Pressure. Pistons need fixing."
Before he could explain, the cosmic toilet flushed with a mighty roaaar!
Jason was now squirming so much in place he looked like he might need to use that thing himself. He'd never had occasion to be seasick before, but just the idea of that was making him so!
The ship lurched forward and I was thrown to the deck. We were in the whirlpool.
"Where's her off switch?" Percy asked through numb lips.
"Not as easy as yours," Thalia said in a voice far to doom like.
"Full reverse!" Clarisse screamed above the noise. The sea churned around us, waves crashing over the deck. The iron plating was now so hot it steamed. "Get us within firing range! Make ready starboard cannons!"
Dead Confederates rushed back and forth. The propeller grinded into reverse, trying to slow the ship, but we kept sliding toward the center of the vortex.
A zombie sailor burst out of the hold and ran to Clarisse. His gray uniform was smoking. His beard was on fire. "Boiler room overheating, ma'am! She's going to blow!"
"Well, get down there and fix it!"
"Can't!" the sailor yelled. "We're vaporizing in the heat."
Clarisse pounded the side of the casemate. "All I need is a few more minutes! Just enough to get in range!"
"We're going in too fast," the captain said grimly. "Prepare yourself for death."
"No!" Tyson bellowed. "I can fix it."
Clarisse looked at him incredulously. "You?"
"He's a Cyclops," Annabeth said. "He's immune to fire. And he knows mechanics."
"Go!" yelled Clarisse.
"Tyson, no!" I grabbed his arm. "It's too dangerous!"
He patted my hand. "Only way, brother." His expression was determined—confident, even. I'd never seen him look like this before. "I will fix it. Be right back."
Tyson had faced down worse monsters already than some ship, but physical prowess didn't mean he'd developed enough mechanical know-how to win this fight. Alex was twining up the edge of his shirt like he was imagining it as his garrote, before he seemed to realize he was doing such a thing and quickly dropped his hands.
As I watched him follow the smoldering sailor down the hatch, I had a terrible feeling. I wanted to run after him, but the ship lurched again—
Percy's hand was left floating in the water now stretched towards nothing, his throat clenching tight. Wrong, wrong, wrong. He couldn't let Tyson do this, he was just a kid. There was something he had to tell him, but what-
and then I saw Charybdis.
She appeared only a few hundred yards away, through a swirl of mist and smoke and water.
The first thing I noticed was the reef—a black crag of coral with a fig tree clinging to the top, an oddly peaceful thing in the middle of a maelstrom.
'I wonder if Luke had to fetch one of those if he'd be as salty,' Hearth signed. It seemed a plenty impossible task to him nobody should have lived through just as much as the first one.
Thalia snorted without amusement and silently corrected him another hero had, Odysseus. Hearth threw his hands up in exasperation there was just no winning, and boy was he right about that.
All around it, water curved into a funnel, like light around a black hole. Then I saw the horrible thing anchored to the reef just below the waterline—an enormous mouth with slimy lips and mossy teeth the size of rowboats. And worse, the teeth had braces, bands of corroded scummy metal with pieces of fish and driftwood and floating garbage stuck between them.
Charybdis was an orthodontist's nightmare.
"Once again, Percy and the stellar descriptions for the win," Alex applauded that visual hell.
"Thank you, I'll be here for eternity," Percy groaned as he sunk farther into his seat. Nobody had yet told him if Tyson was going to be okay, and now he felt like he was looking into the mouth of hell. There was no such thing as a lesser of two evils in this case, every option ahead was going to get blown up!
She was nothing but a huge black maw with bad teeth alignment and a serious overbite, and she'd done nothing for centuries but eat without brushing after meals. As I watched, the entire sea around her was sucked into the void— sharks, schools of fish, a giant squid. And I realized that in a few seconds, the CSS Birmingham would be next.
"Lady Clarisse," the captain shouted. "Starboard and forward guns are in range!"
"Fire!" Clarisse ordered.
Three rounds were blasted into the monster's maw. One blew off the edge of an incisor. Another disappeared into her gullet. The third hit one of Charybdis's retaining bands and shot back at us, snapping the Ares flag off its pole.
"Oh, so it was effective then," Jason said, covering his eyes with his hand like he couldn't watch anymore.
"I'm more glad by the second Clarisse isn't in here, because I'm pretty sure she'd find a way to kill us," Thalia nodded.
"Again!" Clarisse ordered. The gunners reloaded, but I knew it was hopeless. We would have to pound the monster a hundred more times to do any real damage, and we didn't have that long. We were being sucked in too fast.
"We're all gonna die," Percy repeated. Even his powers wouldn't be enough to save Tyson and Annabeth when they had to jump away or be eaten alive!
"Magnus might never talk to you again if so," Alex pleasantly reminded him at least he'd survived the blast, but that was of no comfort if he'd been the only one to do so. If that memory of Annabeth leaning in to kiss him had all been a figment of his scrubbed mind...
Then the vibrations in the deck changed. The hum of the engine got stronger and steadier. The ship shuddered and we started pulling away from the mouth.
"Tyson did it!" Annabeth said.
"Wait!" Clarisse said. "We need to stay close!"
"We'll die!" I said. "We have to move away."
I gripped the rail as the ship fought against the suction. The broken Ares flag raced past us and lodged in Charybdis's braces. We weren't making much progress, but at least we were holding our own. Tyson had somehow given us just enough juice to keep the ship from being sucked in.
Tyson's the strongest kid in the world, Percy kept silently assuring himself as he glared daggers at the book in Will's hand as if demanding his thoughts become true. Stronger than Hercules, and even smarter than the hero of legend with his short time under Beckendorf. He was going to get more of that too, his little brother-
Suddenly, the mouth snapped shut. The sea died to absolute calm. Water washed over Charybdis.
Then, just as quickly as it had closed, the mouth exploded open, spitting out a wall of water, ejecting everything inedible, including our cannonballs, one of which slammed into the side of the CSS Birmingham with a ding like the bell on a carnival game.
Percy was dragged back to one disaster at a time, he'd thrown his instinct into stilling the water around him for once instead of stirring it up and the results left Will's mouth almost frozen in place for a moment before Percy released him and was clutching his pen again to fight off the urge to just read this himself already if his head would stop spinning.
We were thrown backward on a wave that must've been forty feet high. I used all of my willpower to keep the ship from capsizing, but we were still spinning out of control, hurtling toward the cliffs on the opposite side of the strait.
Another smoldering sailor burst out of the hold. He stumbled into Clarisse, almost knocking them both over-board. "The engine is about to blow!"
"Where's Tyson?" Percy demanded at the same time Will was still reading it from the book. Nobody cracked a smile.
"Where's Tyson?" I demanded.
"Still down there," the sailor said. "Holding it together somehow, though I don't know for how much longer."
The captain said, "We have to abandon ship."
"No!" Clarisse yelled.
Percy's eyes flashed dangerously, he fought the urge to punch somebody who wasn't here and thankfully Thalia didn't have long stringy brown hair for him to confuse in her silvery camo jacket.
"We have no choice, m'lady. The hull is already cracking apart! She can't—"
He never finished his sentence. Quick as lightning, something brown and green shot from the sky, snatched up the captain, and lifted him away. All that was left were his leather boots.
"Scylla!" a sailor yelled, as another column of reptilian flesh shot from the cliffs and snapped him up. It happened so fast it was like watching a laser beam rather than a monster. I couldn't even make out the thing's face, just a flash of teeth and scales.
I uncapped Riptide and tried to swipe at the monster as it carried off another deckhand, but I was way too slow.
"Everyone get below!" I yelled.
Nico was starting to wonder if they were inside Charybdis as turned around as he was starting to feel. Percy was trying to save the ghosts, Percy couldn't just fight his way out of this. He wasn't leaving without Tyson, of course not, but the rest, well...something was slipping in him that he'd barely ever given proper words to, and it left him feeling to confused for an emotion he'd never acknowledged.
"We can't!" Clarisse drew her own sword. "Below deck is in flames."
"Lifeboats!" Annabeth said. "Quick!"
"They'll never get clear of the cliffs," Clarisse said. "We'll all be eaten."
"We have to try. Percy, the thermos."
"I can't leave Tyson!"
Percy had done it again in sync with the reader, and Will's heart ached for the guy. He knew better than most it oftentimes hurt worse to heal than the original injury had led you to believe it would, he wished he could look Percy in the eye and promise him Tyson was fine no matter how bad it hurt his head now, but the damage could be worse than the band-aide he'd be fixing.
The son of Poseidon was taking, slow, deep breaths, but there was fear in his eyes. Something was fixing to happen, a part of the epic story that hadn't been told around the campfire that night. Clarisse had certainly never bragged much of her own quest, and that alone should have sent him into worrying and wondering just what they had gone through...
"We have to get the boats ready!"
Clarisse took Annabeth's command.
Jason pumped the air with a victorious smile now, convinced things were going to be smooth sailing as those two finally worked together and Percy would douse the water to get Tyson back!
She and a few of her undead sailors uncovered one of the two emergency rowboats while Scylla's heads rained from the sky like a meteor shower with teeth, picking off Confederate sailors one after another.
"A death for them I can't even laugh at," Alex whispered with still trembling hands Magnus's were twitching to grab. Alex didn't like holding hands though, and boy was that a weird thing to do to comfort someone, a boy!, he'd barely known for two days!
"Get the other boat." I threw Annabeth the thermos. "I'll get Tyson."
"You can't!" she said. "The heat will kill you!"
I didn't listen.
This came to no one's surprise.
I ran for the boiler room hatch, when suddenly my feet weren't touching the deck anymore. I was flying straight up, the wind whistling in my ears, the side of the cliff only inches from my face.
Scylla had somehow caught me by the knapsack, and was lifting me up toward her lair.
Without thinking, I swung my sword behind me and managed to jab the thing in her beady yellow eye. She grunted and dropped me.
The fall would've been bad enough, considering I was a hundred feet in the air. But as I fell, the CSS Birmingham exploded below me.
KAROOM!
The word did nothing to define the explosion. Even their imaginations couldn't quite comprehend the heat, the impact, how Percy felt his whole world blackout for the span of that second where the air had been ripped apart. They were dead, they were all gone.
The engine room blew, sending chunks of ironclad flying in either direction like a fiery set of wings.
Icarus himself couldn't have screwed up this bad. Thalia refused to show even a tick of her anger for Clarisse's pigheadedness causing this, nor bow her head in remorse for her sister nearly dying again. She wouldn't give Percy the wrong impression like that, just kept steadily looking ahead at the book and refusing to blink a single tear at what a miracle it was they were all okay.
"Tyson!" I yelled.
"He's immune to fire," Magnus whispered desperately into the eerily silent room. Percy hadn't echoed that one, he'd just remained locked into place. Alex was working his jaw like he was fighting back the urge to rip something to shreds. "He, those Canadian's, and bulls did nothing to him, and being Poseidon's kid too, maybe he-" Hearth put a calming hand on his shoulder, just the tips of his long slender fingers. He fell silent as the absent promises meant nothing to the god's reality.
The lifeboats had managed to get away from the ship, but not very far. Flaming wreckage was raining down. Clarisse and Annabeth would either be smashed or burned or pulled to the bottom by the force of the sinking hull, and that was thinking optimistically, assuming they got away from Scylla.
Then I heard a different kind of explosion—the sound of Hermes's magic thermos being opened a little too far. White sheets of wind blasted in every direction, scattering the lifeboats, lifting me out of my free fall and propelling me across the ocean.
Jason had fallen back into his seat hard like he'd been knocked back into it. The absent thought flickering across his mind how many other explosions could happen, was Zeus going to strike him out of the sky for being up there so long just to add insult to injury at this point?
I couldn't see anything. I spun in the air, got clonked on the head by something hard, and hit the water with a crash that would've broken every bone in my body if I hadn't been the son of the Sea God.
The last thing I remembered was sinking in a burning sea, knowing that Tyson was gone forever, and wishing I were able to drown.
"My-" the word brother lodged in Percy's throat, even as he now knew what he hadn't been able to grasp this whole time, what Tyson meant to him. "He can't be-" but it wouldn't come out. Just like his little brother, it all got lost.

Tumblr media
Hot single in your area! 😈  Find your solemate!
Somehow it bypasses Bucky’s spam folder and is in his primary email. SHIELD tech is too advanced to let fake mails like this reach him and this doesn’t make sense. Unless it was one of the stupid dating websites he signed up for.
Leaving aside the obvious typo in the subject, he clicks on it, hoping it doesn’t unleash a virus onto his computer.
He’s instead greeted with a poorly Photoshopped picture of you at a bar with a martini in your hand. He doesn’t have to look too hard to see that the martini is, in fact, an emoji. Off to a terrible start already.
Right beside it is an even worse image, an imitation of an early Internet chat box.
Harbinger of Doom just sent you a message!
Come to the empty lot near lair. Bring goggles. 😩💦
Decline/Accept
He wants to strangle you.
______
“Why did you curse my eyes so early in the morning?” He spots you at the top of the lair, speaking loudly so that it hopefully reached you.
“What?” you yell back down instead. “If you’re saying something, I can’t hear you.”
He rolls his eyes. He pulls his phone from his pocket and presses on your contact.
He watches the look of confusion morph into one of slight surprise when you reach into your pocket and pull out your call.
“Don’t ever send an image like that to me again,” he says directly.
“If that one image is too much for you, how will we ever make our sex tape?”
His mouth opens and shuts like goddamn fish.
He can hear your laughter even without the phone.
“First of all- stop laughing- first of all, a sex tape is never going to happen. Second of all, I have a debriefing to go to, we need to make this quick.”
He holds up a finger when he sees you begin to say something. By the look of trouble painted all over your face, he knows it’s going to be a dumb innuendo.
“Thirdly, why are you standing there?”
“I watched The Last Airbender,” you say once your cackling dies down.
“I like that show.” He did. Peter sometimes watched it when he came over and Bucky more often than not joined in.
“I know, you told me.”
Oh.
“Okay, what now?”
“Put your goggles on.” You take one step towards the ledge.
“What are you doing?” The goggles don’t do anything to shield him from the sun, considering that they’re not tinted. Maybe he could invest in those.
You send him a smile, taking a step further. His walk towards the building turns into a jog, then a sprint when you’re basically standing on the edge.
You spread your arms out like Jesus Christ himself before flinging yourself off the building. His stomach drops.
His phone falls to the ground, discarded to the side as he sprints to break your landing.
It never comes.
Instead, a gust of wind smacks him in the face, forcing him a few steps backwards.
“I am now an air bender.” your eyes shone. “Kind of.”
Just like that, the show was ruined.
He wipes the dust on from his glasses that he now understands why you made him wear. Considerate, for a person who nearly just gave him a heart attack.
“Why.” It’s not even a question, just a statement.
“You know how the Tower has a giant ‘A’ on the side?”
He stares at you.
“I‘m gonna spray paint ‘asshole’ on the side of it.”
Pepper would not like that.
“That’s not even evil.”
“Yeah, but it’d annoy your super friends,” You do a flip midair, testing out the repulsors that were tied around your palms, “and I’m the voice of the people.”
You’re too high for him to reach. He doesn’t have his tools, or anything useful on him considering that he never had to use them before. He couldn’t even launch himself at you from the side of the building because you’d just move out of the way. He could jump really high but it would just have the same consequence.
He could talk and keep you distracted but that worked once, it wouldn’t again. At least not for long.
Fuck, he really had only one option.
He leaves you to do your somersaults and turns, walking over to where he dropped his phone. It’s an upgrade from the brick he was using a while ago, but not a high end Stark model. A smartphone, but barely.
He sighs, punching in the number and holding it up to his ear.
“Who are you calling?” you yell from above him.
“Go back to your shitty aerobics,” he yells back.
You pause for a second. “Was that a fucking pun, James Bar-”
The dial tone ends when someone picks up. He diverts his attention back to the call.
“Hey man, I-
“No.”
“You didn’t even let me finish.”
“It’s probably something stupid,” Sam doesn’t even sound annoyed, just uninterested.
“I need your wings.”
“I was right. Bye.”
It was a long shot anyway.
“Fuckin’ hold on a second.” He sees you disintegrate a concrete block by having it drop from the air. “You come here and fix this, then. She’s air bending now.”
“...like Avatar?” Sam unsurprisingly got the reference.
Peter’s interests were usually shared by everyone in the Tower, just because they had to compensate for the teasing he had to endure. It led to a lot of geeky documentaries and occasional musicals. Bucky wouldn’t be caught dead humming songs from Thoroughly Modern Millie under his breath.
“Yeah.”
“You want me to come and fight your girlfriend,” he says slowly.
“She’s not my girlfriend,” Bucky urges, “and yes, I need help. Can’t exactly reach her when she’s twenty feet above me.”
“We have a briefing in 30 minutes. Why did you even go there today?”
He doesn’t know how to answer that. Just looks up at you smacking one of the repulsors against your thigh when it sputters for a second. It’s tradition.
“Well?” Bucky ignores his question.
“Fine,” Sam’s voice is distant for a second as he agrees. “Clint’s asking if he can come too.”
“Fuck no.” One of them was more than enough and Sam was way better at negotiation.
He hears a faint profanity from who he assumed was Clint before the call cuts.
He takes a seat on the ground and waits.
“You’re not going to make any effort to stop me?” You have your arms pressed to your side, palms pointed downwards to keep you afloat.
“I could just throw things at you again.” He makes a mention towards the small pebbles.
“I will fuck you up if you even try,” you warn. He lifts his arms in surrender. “So that’s it. You’re just going to sit there.”
“To be honest, I couldn’t care less if you painted the building,” he says with the least amount of interest he could muster, not that that was very hard.
“Do you not like your team?”
“I do.” He isn’t lying. “But they’re little shits.”
“I can draw a couple of dicks on their window, no problem,” you say offhandedly.
He looks up at you through his fingers. “That won’t be required.”
Although it was appreciated.
“Cool, so then I’m gonna go.” You make a mention of the utility belt on your waist. He looks at the many spray cans that decorate it.
“What colour are you going with?” he interrupts quickly. Fuckin’ Sam. What was the point of wings if he couldn’t get here in 2 minutes?
“Red, probably.” You look down. “I got purple and white just in case.”
“Building’s dark, red is good.”
“You really don’t care, do you?” You lower yourself down to the ground, a few feet ahead of him. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing.” For fucks’ sake, Sam. “You really don’t like superheroes, do you?”
“I don’t have anything against them.”
“Then why do you do this every week?”
This was wading into personal territory and he did not like it.
“Well.” Your eyebrows knit together. “Because I want to. It’s fun.”
“No other reason?”
“Do I need to have another reason?” You push your palm downwards, sending you back up into the air. “Can’t I just be evil because I want to?”
“Sure,” he says. He’s heard worse reasons. “Why not?”
“Besides, if you think I don’t like superheroes then you should meet Jake.”
“Who’s Jake?” He hadn’t ever heard you mention him before because he’d remember if you had.
“My roommate.”
“I didn’t see him when I came over.”
“That’s because we’re not conjoined at the hip.” It takes you a second to stabilise. “Besides, he grabbed the water while I got the bracelet but he refused to come say hi.”
Bucky looked down at his wrist. It was still there. He found himself fidgeting with it more often than not.
“He hates superheroes?”
“He has a valid reason.” Your eyes widen in worry when your head suddenly dips.
“What is it?” He knows the height at which you’re at isn’t very dangerous but if need be, he’s close by.
“Come find out.” Your eyes shone mischievously. “But yeah, no reason for me to be evil.”
“Not even a tragic backstory?”
“None. But if you want it, I can give you one, Barnes.” You test the waters, seeing how long you can lie horizontally. “Can’t promise you’ll like it though.”
“Try me.” He has time to kill. He’s a good listener.
“Well, it all started with my family- a troop of gorillas.” You flip over to lie on your back. “They practically raised me, they did. Until my gorilla mother died and I was all but consumed by grief and-”
“Your mother was a gorilla?” He entertains the notion.
“Or was it my father?” you ask thoughtfully. “I don’t know, I don’t remember. Anyway, I met a-”
“Just to clarify, none of this is real, right?” he interjects.
You stare at him. He stares at you.
“Bucky, that’s the plot of Tarzan,” you say slowly, “or at least whatever I remember of it... which I’m beginning to realise isn’t much.”
“Just clarifying.” He leans back again.
“Anyway so then when my mother, the deer-”
“Gorilla.”
“Whatever. Was killed, I escaped to some place-”
“Where?”
“Somewhere. And I stayed with these seven men-”
“Why seven?” He actually remembers watching this movie with his sister when it came out. An early memory, a bit faded. He remembers how long he saved up for the ticket.
“Because character development. And then I realised the reason my life was so weird was because there was a rat controlling me by pulling on my hair-”
“What the fuc-”
“If you ask any more questions, I’m going to stop.”
Bucky blinks at you. “So that’s your backstory.”
“Raw and uncut, baby.”
“Just to get this straight, your mother, the gorilla deer-”
“Witch.”
“Huh?”
“She was a witch who stole my hair.”
“Wha-”
He’s interrupted by the giant shadow cast by something that flies overhead.
Fucking finally.
He doesn’t even have to look up. Sam does a small glide to the ground, landing gracefully beside him.
Bucky finds you speechless but straightened up from your earlier posture.
“Buck,” Sam greets him.
“Sam,” he says in return, getting up from his place.
A grin spreads across your face. “Mr. Sam Wilson. No way.”
“You’re Y/N, I’m assuming?” Sam offers, posture relaxed. He clearly wasn’t here to fight.
“The one and only.” You tear your eyes away from Sam to glare at Bucky. “Barnes, if you had told me we were expecting guests, I would have dressed better.”
Bucky furrows his eyebrows in suspicion at you. You’d dress up for Sam.
You dressed up like a suburban tourist dad for him. He was feeling the offence incoming.
“Can’t count on him to be useful in any situation.” Alright, he did not call Sam just to have the both of you team up against him.
“Normally I’d agree with you but he did just invite you here, so...” you trail off, looking at Sam expectantly.
What the shit.
Sam smirks. Bucky switches rapidly back and forth between the both of you.
“I see why Buck keeps coming back every week.” It doesn’t take long for him to catch on, enlisting a feeling of triumph from you.
“I can’t see why he doesn’t just stay at home everyday if this is the view.” You gesture to him.
This is not what Bucky wanted.
“Okay,” Bucky interrupts, “what is going on here?”
“Pure chemistry, I’d say.” You’re half tempted to bite your lip to seal the deal.
“I agree.” Sam just nods, completely and utterly serious.
You think that you’ll give him a gift basket just for playing along despite meeting you for the first time at that moment.
“Get a room.” Bucky rolls his eyes.
“Maybe we will.” You tap your finger against your lip in thought. “How do you feel about Indian food, Sam?”
“Very positively.”
Bucky grits his teeth. “If you’re not planning to spray paint the Tower, can you just hand over the repulsers so we can go home for the day?”
You let out a small tsk in disapproval. “See what I have to deal with?”
“Can’t imagine how you do it every weekend,” Sam says dryly, not wasting a second in replying.
“Hello?” Bucky waves his arm around. “She’s the villain here.”
“Your face is the villain here.” You tear your eyes away from Sam only to glare at him. “He won’t even wear a cape. Why am I the only one who brings their A-Game every week?”
“Sam just get the damn-”
“You should wear a cape, man.” Bucky’s absolutely sure that even Sam knows it’s a ridiculous idea.
“I’m not wearing a fuckin’ cape,” he grumbles.
“What are your thoughts on swords, then?” Your finger finds a place under your chin in deep contemplation. “You’d look great with a sword.”
Bucky buries his face in his palms. “Sam, for the love of God.”
“Okay, alright.” Sam finally gives in with a small chuckle. He runs a few steps to get a small head start before launching himself into the air, whizzing past your levitating figure. He does a neat little flip midair before matching your height.
Showoff.
“How difficult are you gonna make this, Wilson?” you ask, a smirk on your face.
“Jesus Christ.” Bucky exhales, looking at the both of you through his goggles.
“What’s your play here?” Sam calls out loudly.
“Was gonna spray paint ‘asshole’ on the side of the Tower.”
“After the ‘A’?”
“After the ‘A’,” you confirm.
“Now that’s too small,” Sam tutted. “You gotta think bigger. Paint the whole Tower.”
“Sam!” Bucky looks horrified.
“Hmm.” You look like you’re considering it. “Don’t have enough paint for that though.”
“You’re an evil genius, right?” Sam casts a small glance at Bucky. “At least that’s what he tells me.”
“You talk about me?” You grin at the disgruntled man on the ground.
“I don’t,” he mutters, shaking his head. A lie.
“Yeah, so build something,” Sam points out. “Get some more paint. I’ll even tell you the best vantage points to spill it.”
“No, he won’t,” Bucky shouts from below.
“He’s just cranky because he didn’t get his prune juice this morning, ignore him,” Sam dismisses him.
Prune juice? He was a young 100, not ancient.
“What’s your favourite colour, Falcon?”
“I like red.”
As annoyed as Bucky is right now, he stores that away in his memory for later. He also knows Sam loves seafood and a good pair of shoes.
“A couple of gallons of red paint it is, then.” You lower yourself to the ground, Sam slowly follows suit until he lands beside Bucky.
“You know we can’t let you go without taking those, right?” Bucky tilts his head towards your invention.
You narrow your eyes at him. He doesn’t budge.
“I’ll tell ya what,” Sam pipes in instead. “I’ll keep them until you finish getting the paint and once you’re done, we’ll make an evening out of vandalising the Tower.”
Bucky may not enjoy his company all that much but he admires Sam’s diplomacy. Of course, you would never make it this easy while reasoning with him.
“That a promise, Mr. Wilson?” You raise your eyebrow at him questioningly but are already in the process of removing the things from your hand.
“Wouldn’t ever lie to you, doll.” He holds up his hand in a mock swear.
You walk towards Bucky and him, rotating your wrists to get rid of the soreness. “Bold claim for a man who met me ten minutes ago.”
“Feels like it’s been longer.” He sends you a wink and you can’t stop the laugh the escapes from you finally.
Bucky holds his hand out for the gadgets. You shrink away from him with a click of your tongue.
“Technically, he takes this round.” You send a nod towards Sam, dropping off the repulsors into his hand. “So he gets it.”
Bucky rolls his eyes.
“You gonna keep ‘em safe?” you ask Sam, this time a little more earnestly.
“Guard it with my life,” he says seriously, pressing his lips together in a line to avoid smiling.
“You’re both ridiculous,” Bucky cuts in.
“You’re going to be late.” Sam tucks the devices into his pocket safely. “You know how Steve gets when people walk in on his speeches. Do you even have a ride?”
“Got the motorcycle.”
“See you there.” Sam nods.
“Save me a place,” Bucky says to him.
“No.” He doesn’t even hesitate. “Y/N. It was a pleasure.”
“Still holding you to that evening, Sam.” You send him a smile.
“I’m countin’ on it.” He gives you a small three finger salute before taking off, leaving you staring after his retracting figure.
When the dust settles, Bucky awkwardly clears his throat. “Right. So that was that.”
“Dude,” you let out an exhale. “he’s so hot.”
He murmurs something unintelligible. It vaguely sounds like a series of threats but mostly a list of complaints.
“Don’t you have a meeting to get to?” You turn your attention back to him.
“Yeah.”
“Aren’t you going to be late?” You glance at the clock on your phone.
“I’ll just tell them I was on a mission.” Well, sort of. “Besides, what are they gonna do? Kick me out?”
“Fair enough.” You shrug. “Have a safe ride back.”
From what he knows of you and Sam, the both of you were kidding around. But he could never be too sure. He can’t even ask if you were serious about the entire thing because it’s none of his business.
Were the implications of having his mortal nemesis and other mortal nemesis date important enough to overrule that?
“Are you planning to skip your meeting, or?” you ask when he remains freezes in his spot, eyes glazed over like he’s thinking about something. “Because if you are, I know this great Thai place-”
“Don’t do that again,” he says instead, shaking his head to jolt him out of his thoughts.
“What?”
“Flinging yourself off roofs like that.”
“Why?” Because it scared the hell out of him, for one.
“Just don’t.”
“Oh please, like you’ve never done dangerous shit like that before.” You narrow your eyes at him, reading his face. “Are you telling me you care about me?”
“No.” His nose twitches. “Just don’t throw yourself off buildings when I’m around.”
“What about when you’re not?”
“As long as I’m not there to witness it.” He shrugs, spinning on his heel to leave. Technically he preferred if you didn’t do things like that at all.
“Fine. I’ll just have my clone try out all the dangerous stuff for me.”
He stops in his tracks. “You have a clone?”
“Well,” You squint, “no. But I’m working on it.”
He scoffs, shaking his head. “Bye Y/N.”
“You know, it sounds an awful lot like you’re saying we’re friends.” Your whole demeanour changes and he already knows what’s coming.
“I never said that,” he argues vehemently. “All I said was that I can’t have your murder on my hands.”
“Thus implying that we’re friends. In a fucked up, enemies kind of way.” You positively beam at him. “Aw, Barnes, that’s adorable.”
Adorable? Adorable?
“I hate you.”
“I love you, too, bestie,” you gush, dumb grin on your face. “I’ll make us friendship rings next time. What are your thoughts on matching tattoos?”
He wants to cry.
______
By the time Sam walks into the meeting room, the session’s already begun. He shoots an apologetic look to a monologuing Steve before taking his place at the nearest chair available.
Something sharp pokes his thigh. His wings are off and in the backpack beside him, but then he remembers your little inventions that were still in his pocket.
He tries not to make much of a noise while he pulls them out, giving them a look over to make sure they’re not broken.
“Watcha got there, Big Bird?” Tony asks lowly from beside him.
“Something that Barnes’ enemy made.” Sam holds it up slightly.
“The one he’s been rendezvousing around town with every weekend?”
“That’s her.” He’s about to put it in his backpack when Tony stops him.
“Pass that here for a second.” He recognises it immediately for what it is, interest piqued.
Sam hands one of them over while he puts the other back in the bag. It’s a metallic circle, not bigger than Tony’s palm, with a thick leather strap to tie it around your palm.
“She made this?”
“Why don’t you ask him?” Sam mentions towards Bucky who silently slips into the conference room, standing in the corner near the potted plant since there were no more chairs left.
“The balance has gotta be off on this thing,” he mutters to himself, wholly ignoring the brooding man standing in the corner like a Christmas tree.
“She seemed to be manoeuvring it fine,” Sam catches the eye of a lower ranking agent who makes the mistake of glaring at him for talking while the meeting was going on. A few seconds later the agent hastily looks away and doesn’t turn around for the rest of the hour.
“Could be better.” He uses a much more intricate model for his suits, although this isn’t even half-bad for a homemade version. “Do you know how long she took to make this?”
“Buck says she comes up with a new one every week, so I’m guessing that long.”
It had a few glitches but it was incredibly refined for a week’s worth of work.
“Interesting.” He gives it a quick overlook before handing it back to Sam who drops it into the bag.
He casts a swift glance at Bucky, noting how he wasn’t even paying attention to the meeting but rather to whatever he had tied around his metal wrist, fidgeting with it with his thumb.
Tony has an idea.
And that was generally bad news.

Are you in town? - Matthew Tkachuk (part 1)
part two here
part three here
word count: 1860 words
TW: language, angst (?)
let me know if you want part two, I’m somehow still not sure
...
Tumblr media
It was so hot that day. The movers were already gone, the place feeling empty without all the furniture. In a few hours, you'd be long gone, flying far away from Chesterfield.
Some small part of you felt sorry for selling your parents' house - the house you spent your whole childhood living in. But they moved out a few years ago and told you many times they didn't mind at all selling it.
Wiping the sweat off of your eyebrows you made your way through the blooming garden, trying to memorize every little detail. You remembered climbing this tree, you remembered the hole in the fence you made so the neighbour's dog could come play with you, you remembered the time capsule you and Matt buried here when you were fifteen.
Until now, you completely forgot about that. Even though you two didn't talk after he got drafted, it'd be a good idea to meet again since you might never see him again. You might be moving to Calgary but that city was so big it'd be a miracle to meet Matthew somewhere.
So you scrolled through your phone, praying he didn't change his number after all those years as you dialed it.
The phone rang twice before someone picked it up.
"Yes?"
Matthew's voice was so different since the last time you talked.
"Hey Matt, this is Y/N, I'm moving out today and I thought we could dig up the time capsule we buried at my place as kids before I leave. Are you in town?" It was off-season so you might get lucky.
"You are moving out already? But yeah, I can meet you in an hour if you have the time."
"Yes, I'll still be here, don't worry."
"Okay..." There was a moment of awkward silence, neither of you knew how to break it. Was it a bad idea? Of course you wouldn't be as good friends as you once were. But you didn't know it would be this... weird. He didn't say goodbye back when he left to Calgary and didn't answer to any of your calls or messages. What were you thinking? That he wanted to see you?
"So, where are you moving to?" Matt finally continued, making the conversation more bareable.
"Calgary, they offered me an amazing job there."
"Really? I've been there for a few years."
"I heard." Not from you, was what you didn't say. It seemed like he'd heard it nonetheless.
Silence. You hated how distant you've grown - once, a long time ago, you were best friends. You went together to kindergarden and since then you've been the best of best friends. But even after all you went through, you didn't know what to say.
"Nevermind, I have to get going. I'll be at your place at three, okay?"
"Okay. I'll meet you there."
As you hung up, sadness enveloped you. Maybe you shouldn't have called. Maybe it'd be better to never meet Matt again, to remember only the good old times.
But he might be already on his way and you wanted to say a proper goodbye before going far, far away.
You loved him once, you recalled. It broke your heart when he left without looking back.
It irritated you that you couldn't do the same as easily.
...
"Y/N?" a now familiar voice called, the sound of closing car doors echoing through the silent street.
Matt looked same as he did four years ago and still totally different. It was like staring at a stranger you could swear you've already seen before. The curly, those pretty grey-blue eyes and the crooked smile you remembered and thought about too often. He got taller and more mascular over the time he played hockey professionally.
"Hey," you said nervously, tucking your slightly trembling hands into the pockets of your shorts.
Again, that uncomfortable silence took place.
"How long is it?" Since you've last seen each other. Since he'd ignored your calls and messages. Since he'd left you crying as he left this town - as he left you.
"Five years," you said.
Regret flashed in those pretty eyes as he took you in. Did you look to him the same as you did the last time he saw you?
"I'm sorry I didn't call." That was it? After five fucking years of silence, this was his apology for everything. This was a mistake. You didn't think it through when you called him today. Just now you started remembering all the things he's done to you.
"That doesn't make it hurt less, does it?" You whipped around, going to the line of fruit trees where you left the two shovels you borrowed from the neighbour.
Matt's hand slightly gripped your elbow, stopping you in your tracks.
"I know that I made a bunch of wrong decisions before I left."
"I've been trying for 6 months to reach you before giving up completely. And you? You've been living the best version of your life anyone could ever imagine."
"That's not true and you know it." Matthew said and you wanted to leave right then, forget this stupid meeting.
"I do not." you hissed, trying to calm down your rising temper.
Matt sighed, not wanting to argue over this. So he made his way to the tree line, picked one shovel from the ground and started digging where he remembered the time capsule was.
You didn't help him dig it up. You were too lost in memories, clinging to the past as you thought of younger version of Matt.
The clang of metal on metal attracted your attention back to him. He grunted as he pulled up the metal box and laid it on the grass.
You ducked low next to him, dusting off the dirt of the box. It was an old, weirdly dented thing.  Your eyes laid on the lock and you nearly sighed in annoyance just when Matt grabbed at his necklace, the key dangling from it. When you two buried the capsule, each of you got a key made for it. You had yours somewhere in the boxes that had already been shipped to your new apartment and Matt's... he didn't forget. He kept it through the years, guarding it and not losing it as you expected.
You didn't say anything, just patiently waited for him to open the box.
There was a letter inside, along with a bunch of things you thought of as long forgotten. Your bracelets of friendship, the colors faded already; a puck with which you and Matthew played your first hockey game together when you were six; so many polaroid photos with your faces on them; USB with a playlist you two always danced to.
Your eyes watered - how were you supposed to say goodbye to all of this?
Silently, you looked over all of the photos - you and Matt in the rink with small hockey sticks and skates, you and Matt sticking out your tongues colored blue with slushies, you and Matt, you and Matt, you and Matt...
Then Matthew's hand found yours, your fingers automatically intertwining with his. You started crying, first silently but then the sobs shook with your whole body.
"Come here," he murmured, hugging you. His body was so soft and warm, as if begging you to lean into his touch.
"How- how could you leave this all behind?" you mumbled between the sobs.
"It's not leaving if you don't say goodbye." Matt said, his fingers playing with yours.
"Then you are a fucking coward, Matthew."
Silence. He didn't argue with you on that, so you must have been right.
You stopped crying after a while, checking your watch while wiping your nose.
Shit. It was so late already - you had to call an uber to get you to the airport in the next hour or you'd be super late.
"I'll have to go," you said quietly, but Matt interrupted you.
"You are right," he tucked on the edge of his shirt, clearly nervous. He was nervous. "I was a coward. I thought that if I didn't say goodbye to you as I left, it'd hurt less. I was wrong and I was a fucking coward for not picking up your calls or replying to your messages because it would make it so real - that I was leaving and probably never coming back. But I want to make it all right again, I want to be a part of your life - if you will let me."
You thought about his offer and still, you couldn't answer. You weren't sure about letting him into your heart just for him to storm out again without a goodbye, leaving you behind, broken.
"Can I at least take you to the airport?" To that, you nodded, picking up the time capsule, putting all the items back in. Then you gave back the lent shovels to your neighbour and with a last glance at your house, you got into Matt's car.
...
On the way to the airport Matt played the playlist from the USB that was in the time capsule and the nostalgy hit you hard.
You remembered the lyrics, the melody; you remembered everything.
The drive was too short and you started panicking as the engine stopped.
Matthew helped you with your suitcase and went inside with you. The two of you stopped at the first gate.
"Here," he said, giving you a piece of paper. "It's my adress. Hopefully, you won't live so far away, so we could meet there if you wanted to."
You tucked it in your pocket without a word.
"Also, take this. I wrote it in ninth grade so don't think much of it. But I want you to read it, Y/N."
It was the letter from the time capsule, with your name on the blank envelope.
"I will." you promised.
The silence that followed wasn't awkward this time.
"I'll let you know my decision about what you said earlier. I just... I need some time."
Matt noded, giving you the space you so desperately needed.
"So, until we meet again - goodbye, Y/N."
"Goodbye, Matt."
...
The plane took off and you finally had the time to read the letter he gave you.
You immediately recognised his scrambled handwriting and you smiled at how messy it was before you started reading.
Dear Y/N,
I'm writing this in case I leave. Dad has been telling me for some time already that if I'll get drafted, I'll have to leave. He also said that if I'll be smart, I will never look back at my past.
I don't want you to be my past. I want you to be my present and my future.
He said I'll meet a lot of girls but I know that none of them is going to be like you.
So, I promise you, I will never say goodbye to you.
I love you,
Matt
With trembling fingers, you pulled out your phone, the tears already staining the screen.
That's why he never said goodbye. Because of this stupid letter and his stupid promise.
The phone rang once before he picked it up.
"Y/N? What is it?"
A ragged breath escaped you and you laughed and cried at the same time.
"I don't want you to be my past. I want you to be my present and my future."
"Oh, that was cheesy, wasn't it-"
"No, you dumbass. That's my answer."

Intensity - Loki
Here we have a Loki fic. That came out of nowhere, I’ve only ever written drabbles for him. It’s not long but hopefully it’s not bad?
Enjoy!

*****
Unlike most people, the mutant gene didn’t show up when you were a kid. You could be grateful for that at least. Because of that little grace, your childhood had been completely normal. No worries, no fears, nothing out of the ordinary.
Then you started to notice changes.
People seemed calm around you for the most part. If your emotions were out of control, you realized that others would be that way too. It took a while to understand that it was more than just the environment, more than just coincidence.
It took a disaster.
It was a fight with your dad when you were a teen. You didn’t even remember what it was about, what caused the issue, but you were angry enough that you were told to go to your room. Your mom had come in to sit with you for a while to try to calm you down.
The next thing you know, she went into the living room and tried to attach your dad with a butcher knife. He was okay but he did have to get sixteen stitches. And your mom was traumatized, not understanding why she tried to kill the man she loved.
That’s what had them put it all together. The little things they’d noticed but had brushed off had come out in a big way.
You could influence other people’s emotions. Oddly enough, anger was easier than the nicer emotions, but you’d had a pretty laid back life so you didn’t feel anger a lot.
Maybe that’s why it was so potent when you did feel it.
Emotion manipulation could be dangerous without proper training so in college, after a few years of trying to pretend you were normal, you left to find someone to train you. Therapists, doctors, military people all tried their hand to get you trained. All of them had the same thing to say.
You were undisciplined at best. At worst? You’d never be able to be completely in control.
Over the years it became harder and harder to keep in contact with people, including your family. It wasn’t like you could have an actual relationship that way. You could never be sure if you were influencing someone’s emotions, even when you tried to get control of your powers.
The military had a bracelet that worked for other mental powers. It didn’t work flawlessly, but it helped. It dampened your emotional field so that it took touch to influence someone for the most part. That and a steady regime of keeping calm, you got a better grasp on it.
Better didn’t mean perfect though. You still sometimes affected people when you didn’t mean to. You still hated it when you did it.
One of the things you did learn while working with various therapists was that there was more to your power than just emotion manipulation. To a lesser degree, you could read emotions on people. It didn’t work as well when you had the bracelet on, dampened that power as well, but sometimes...sometimes you could catch bits and pieces off of the people closest to you.
While you traveled from military base to military base to try to figure out a way to work on your powers, you didn’t expect to get a call from the Avengers.
Well. It was less of a call and more of Iron Man dropping down in front of you and one of the generals so that he could offer you a place to stay at his tower.
“How’d you hear about me?”
Although you couldn’t see his eyes, you knew that Iron Man—Tony Stark, it was Tony Stark in front of you—was looking at you.
“Fury. He has a way of getting information on lost souls that need a little help. What do you say? Wanna be a part time Avenger? Use your mojo to make some people really docile so that we don’t have to keep wrecking New York City every time some supervillain decides to stop by?”
You shifted a bit and looked at the general beside you. He just shrugged.
You weren’t a prisoner of the military. It had been very evident that you were there voluntarily. It was up to you.
“I’m working on a better dampener for mental powers. Maybe I can make one that’s specific to your power and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.”
And just like that, you didn’t need to hear anything else.
------
The tower is bigger than you thought it would be. Which is a good thing. Especially when you realized it’s not just the Avengers that frequent the tower but other members of Shield.
“This area is all yours,” Mr Stark says as he shows you to your room. Suite. Apartment. “The walls are made from the same dampening material as your bracelet so it’ll contain your powers.”
“My powers aren’t that powerful,” you said softly as you touched the bracelet in question. “Thank you Mr Stark. I...I want to help people but I am scared of what my powers might do. I want to protect people from me.”
He turned to look at you and dropped some of that rich man bravado he’d been sporting since he escorted you onto his private jet.
“You don’t have to be scared of yourself here. I promise.”
That’s not the last time you see him either. He explains that you should call him Tony and although it’s weird at first, you do.
“Tony, aren’t you scared I’ll influence you?”
He looked up from where he was typing on a tablet, his feet up on the table in your kitchenette.
“Pretty sure you do,” he said casually as he looked back down at the tablet. “It’s only ever small things though. Calm sometimes, tired sometimes. Hungry that one, that’s why I ordered pizza.”
You felt your heart start to beat fast at the thought of you accidentally influencing him, but he must have caught on to that.
“Anxiety and I are old friends,” he explained as he put the tablet down and crossed over to you. “I’m not worried about it. Your influence doesn’t last if I’m not around you so once I leave, I’m back to myself. But honestly? Your influences are a lot simpler than some of the things I’ve felt.”
You thought about everything you knew about Iron Man and the Avengers and decided, yeah, he was probably right. Anything you could make him feel would be pretty tame compared to flying a nuclear warhead into a wormhole without knowing if you were coming back.
------
The first time you meet Natasha Romanoff, you spill orange juice on your shirt. She just smirked and grabbed a napkin to hold out to you.
It was the first time you’d let yourself out of your rooms. The new bracelet was supposed to be more effective, but Tony said he wouldn’t know if he was on the right track until you let yourself be around people.
People meaning Shield agents. You didn’t expect to be face to face with Black Widow.
Her grin wavered for a second before it came back even brighter.
“You have better control than I thought you’d have,” she admitted as she leaned against a nearby table. “Stark said this new bracelet would still let you influence, but you stopped it pretty quick.”
“I didn’t even realize what I was doing,” you confided as you gripped your half full glass of orange juice. “I just want to hold it all in when I’m around people.”
Natasha tapped her fingers on the table before she crossed over towards the door.
“It’s not good to hold it in. You might end up like a grenade without a pin.”
With that helpful piece of advice, she left.
Later, in Tony’s lab rather than your room, you told him what she said. He nodded as he made a few adjustments.
“She’s got the right idea at least. You stretch your wings with it every now and then, that’s one thing. You don’t work it at all and the muscle will atrophy. Who knows what a gift like yours can do if it degrades and you don’t have control over it?”
It took a while to come up with a plan. A few Shield agents, volunteers specifically, would work with you and let you influence them. Under supervision in case you lost control.
It was a step. You just wish you knew if it was in the right direction or not.
------
“This is Thor and that’s his...brother Loki. Don’t worry, he’s on his best behavior these days.”
You nearly swallowed your spit when you turned around and sure enough, you were faced with Tony, Thor, and Loki. This was somehow your life but you hadn’t really figured it out yet. You were a few feet away from literal Gods.
Thankfully Tony couldn’t read your thoughts because he’d think you lumped him in with that group.
“Uh, hi,” you said as you introduced yourself.
“Ah, another Avenger? Welcome.”
You smiled at Thor and shook your head, but Tony moved over and draped his arm over your shoulder.
“Definitely an Avenger, just with training wheels. Probationary,” he explained at Thor’s uncertain look. “We’re working on the kinks.”
You wanted to elbow Tony to get him off of you, especially as you could feel your heart start to race in your chest. This was nerves, anxiety building into a spike in your chest. Only Tony didn’t seem to react. He usually would at least look at you if he felt you influencing him.
And he didn’t seem to feel anxious or nervous in the least. Neither did Thor who was talking to Tony about...something about a bridge, you weren’t sure.
But Loki. You hadn’t paid much attention to him after the initial greeting, but you met his gaze now. He was staring straight at you, an intrigued look on his face as he watched you.
Tony and Thor might not have noticed your influence, but it seems Loki had. Great.
“I should get back to the lab,” you said as you stepped out from under Tony’s arm. “It was nice to meet you both. Bye.”
You heard Thor’s farewell at your back, but you could still feel Loki’s gaze on your as you turned the corner.
------
Any other time that you ran into Thor in the tower, he always put you at ease. Tony had explained your powers and how you were coming to grips with them. Thor asked questions about it, always careful to never put you on edge, but he didn’t seem concerned for himself.
“It would be hard for a human such as yourself to influence an Asgardian mind,” he said with a smile when you asked him about it.
That didn’t explain Loki then. Besides your first meeting, every time you were around the dark haired God you’d turned into a nervous, babbling mess. The look on his face was always intrigued, but it wasn’t cruel. It seemed almost clinical.
Although you’d heard a lot about that particular God’s abilities. Maybe since he had some mind control abilities himself, he could feel it in you.
And didn’t that just put you on edge. You weren’t sure how you felt about having something in common with Loki, God of mischief.
Although you weren’t entirely sure that was the only reason you felt nervous around Loki. Most people talked about how attractive the God of thunder is, with reason, but there was just something about the dark haired God that caught your attention.
So of course you would find yourself alone with the God in question while you waited for Tony. The Avengers were off Avenging and you didn’t like to be holed up while you waited for them.
You weren’t sure why you expected Loki to be off with them, but he wasn’t. He was in a chair in the room, a book on his lap that he flicked through lazily. When you walked in, his eyes lifted up and met yours.
There was a challenge in his gaze. Normally you’d make an excuse and turn to leave. He was challenging you to see if you’d do it now that there weren’t other people around.
Instead you crossed over and went to the kitchen area.
“Is it because of my past misdeeds? Is that why you’re nervous around me?”
You hadn’t heard him speak before right then, but his voice fit him. You tapped your fingers against the fridge door that you had pulled open even though you weren’t hungry.
“I’ve heard a few stories about you, sure. But you’re a God. It’s...intimidating.”
You heard the chair creak. When you looked over your shoulder, he had stood up and crossed a few feet to be closer.
“Regardless of my past, you have nothing to fear from me.”
Slowly you shut the fridge door and turn to face him completely. The look on his face made you believe him. But it was more than that. You could feel something from him, an emotion buried in the haze from your bracelet.
Honesty.
“Okay,” you whispered as you met his eyes. “I’ll...keep that in mind.”
------
The lower library wasn’t exactly your favorite, but it was usually empty. You walked through the first few aisles and froze when you saw that you weren’t alone.
“You come here to be alone,” Loki guessed as he looked around the room. “It’s one of the few places that’s technically public but usually void of people.”
You wrapped your arms around yourself and nodded.
“I’m supposed to be in public for a few hours each day but sometimes it gets to be a bit too much. So I come here.”
He nodded as if he understood that. Then he turned to face you head on.
“How powerful are you?”
You almost laughed at that, but held it in.
“I’m not powerful, I’m untrained. Dangerous,” you added as you looked away from him.
One of the Shield agents had to be sedated when you’d made her feel too many things at once on accident. You weren’t sure how she was doing.
Tony was still calibrating the new bracelet, but you wore it anyways. You just hoped...hoped it was enough.
“I can help you. I’m skilled with mind control of stronger beings than humans.”
You fingered the bracelet you wore and thought about the Shield agent, your parents, all the people you’d influenced over the years that had bad results.
“I’ll think about it,” you said softly. Then you sighed. “I should go back to the lab. Tony will be looking for me.”
“Ah, yes, we wouldn’t want that, would we?”
You smiled and looked away. You weren’t sure you could handle for Loki to pick up on how charmed you were by him just then.
You really needed to get better at keeping your feelings a secret.
------
The lab was in disarray. You stumbled from where you’d fallen, the debris mostly away from you.
Even in his panic, Tony hadn’t hurt you. He’d flung himself as far away as he could, kept his robots from hurting you, but he’d nearly destroyed his lab in the process.
“Tony?”
It was quiet for a moment but then you heard a rasping breath. You climbed over a fallen stool and went to your knees next to where he was crumpled on the floor.
“Tony, are you...what can I do?”
He let out a gasp, his eyes on your face for a moment before they slammed shut tight.
“JARVIS, get Pepper,” you called out, unsure of what else to do.
The mechanical voice said it would be a moment and then said that Miss Potts was on her way down. You slumped on the floor next to Tony, careful not to touch him.
Your anxiety about this test, about how long it had been since there had been any progress, had bled over to Tony. Only it was heightened somehow, the anxiety and worry causing a full blown flashback for him. You’d caught glimpses of it, almost-images of the wormhole and falling through the air.
It’s why you asked for Pepper. He hadn’t been able to talk to her before...before.
When she came in, she gave you an understanding look before she went to his side. Since he was being cared for, you got up and stumbled away from them. Your bracelet was still on the receiver so you grabbed it and hooked it on, grateful for the dullness you felt afterwards.
Then you left the lab. All you wanted to do was go to your rooms, to bury yourself under your blankets and wish it all away, but instead you headed in a different direction.
The room that Loki had been given was in the same hall as Thor, but you thought Thor was away on a mission with Steve and Sam. Loki’s door was shut, but when you raised your hand to knock, it came open.
“I need help.”
Loki came from across the room in a hurry, probably thinking you meant you were being chased. When he was sure the issue was less immediate, he nodded and met your eyes.
What he saw there made him let out a breath. He reached for you, slow so that you wouldn’t pull away. He unhooked the bracelet and set it to the side.
“This might be a bit uncomfortable,” he said softly as he raised his hands to your forehead.
In an instant you were no longer in the tower, no longer in New York. You were in your childhood bedroom, your mom helping you make your bed while your dad laughs at the two of you. It was such a distant memory, something you had forgotten.
As more and more of those happy memories come to the surface, you sense something from Loki. A bitter tang on your tongue.
He had hoped that your childhood would have been like his. He had seen you and imagined that you’d been set apart as well. To see a loving, happy childhood had almost been a disappointment for him.
That faded away as the next memory appeared. He watched from your own eyes as your mother, in a rage not of her own, tried to kill your father. He sees your best friend yelling that she can’t trust you, teachers telling you that you can’t come to class, job and job firing you after only days.
He sees relationship after relationship burn hot and bright at first and then the horror sets in, the worry that they didn’t want you like you wanted them, the anger from them, the apathy. You felt it all in spirals, in such quick succession that embarrassment started to well up inside you.
“Shh, it’s alright,” he promised as he continued to dig inside your memories. “You’re not there. They don’t matter.”
There’s something like a tug and then suddenly, like a dam breaking, you're overwhelmed with emotions. They seem to come from every direction like the room is crowded.
You open your mouth to say his name, to ask him for help, but instead there’s nothing but darkness as you give in to the pain.
------
The medical wing is new to you. When you sit up, there’s a hand on your shoulder to help you ease up the rest of the way.
“It’s been two days,” Natasha says in a tone you can’t quite read. “Thought we were going to have to take turns kissing you, Snow White.”
“Thanks for…not doing that,” you said as you reached up to rub at your forehead.
Loki. You had been in his room, he was in your mind. He was trying to help you, going through your memories. There had been...oh the emotions you’d felt before you’d passed out.
“Where’s Loki?”
Natasha doesn’t say anything, just reached out to grab a cup of water from next to your bed. As she held it out to you, you pushed it away.
“Natasha, where’s Loki? Tell me.”
She sighed and put the cup down.
“Steve and Thor had him put into a holding cell for attacking you.”
You were shaking your head before she even finished.
“He didn’t though!”
A tablet was on the table. After a brief hesitation she grabbed it and navigated through a few things.
“Watch this and tell me he didn’t attack you.”
You watched the recording from his room. The two of you were in front of each other, his hands on your head. There didn’t seem to be anything at first but then you saw what looked like a surge of magic go from his hands to your head.
You shook your head as you rewound it and watched the same spot.
“I need to see him,” you said when you finally looked up at her. “Now, Natasha.”
Although she obviously didn’t want to let you, she gave you a nod. You were already in sweats for comfort while you were unconscious, so you just slid on some too big slippers and let her lead the way to the holding cells.
Steve immediately raises his hands once you enter the hallway.
“What the hell Romanoff, I said–”
“Yeah, when’s the last time I listened to you,” Natasha snarked with a smirk. Then she gestured at you. “She wants to talk to him.”
Steve was just about to say no, but Thor came from down the hall with a frown.
“I think she should. I know what we saw, but we don’t understand it. It’s possible the only one that can understand it is her. Besides,” he added with a sly look in your direction, “Loki is on his best behavior when she’s around.”
You didn’t know how to take that, but thankfully it seemed to persuade Steve. He told you he’d buzz you into the cell once you were there. They had a camera so they’d see and hear everything and, if you needed it, could come and save you.
You really didn’t think you’d need it.
In the cell, Loki seemed different. He ignored you when you came in, just threw a ball against the wall and caught it over and over again.
You wished you could use your powers to read Asgardians as well as humans, but...wait.
There was nothing. From Natasha, from Steve, from the nurse who had released you. Usually you felt something, a low hum of their emotions, but there was nothing.
“The force of it was too much for you, but it’ll come back.” He caught the ball and let it rest beside him on the bench. “You felt too many emotions at once. Your mind was adapting to having mine in there when it happened and it overloaded.”
You nodded and sat down beside him, a few feet away just so that Steve wouldn’t bust in. You really didn’t need observers with this, but you knew you didn’t have a choice.
“It felt so weird. It was like I could feel the emotions of everyone in the tower at once.”
Loki looked over at you in surprise.
“In the tower? That was everyone in the city at once.” At your surprised look, he offered a smile. “I knew you were powerful when we first met, I just didn’t realize how powerful.”
You sighed and leaned back against the wall.
“Holy shit,” you breathed with another laugh. “No wonder I’ve been asleep for two days.”
And here you thought you couldn’t really surprise the God of mischief more than you already had.
“Two days? So that’s...why you haven’t come to set the record straight.”
Oh. Had he thought that you believed the story that he’d attacked you? Or did he just think that you were letting him suffer?
“Just woke up. Saw the video, heard you were down here, came to rescue you.”
He laughed at that, a sound that both surprised and pleased you.
“How do you feel?”
You thought about it. The emptiness in your head was blissful. So was the fact that you didn’t need to worry about making people feel your emotions.
“I hope it never comes back.”
His hand closed around yours and, with a gentle tug, he pulled you a little closer to him.
“You shouldn’t hope for that. The gifts you have don’t have to be a burden. You can learn to control them, learn to use them.” He smiled at you, his eyes locked on yours. “I said I knew you were powerful and I meant it. I could feel it in you.”
You rubbed a hand over your wrist where your bracelet usually sat.
“Maybe I should be the one in the holding cell.”
Loki’s face became more serious as he looked you over.
“It could happen one day.”
The memory of Tony curled up on his side after your influence made you think about what had happened in Loki’s room. Your mind had reached the entirety of the city. If you could push your influence that far…
“I have to…”
You didn’t bother saying more, just tore from the room in a rush. Steve was outside and he nodded when he met your eyes.
“We saw. We believe you. We’ll let him out.”
You nodded because that was good, but that wasn’t the only thing on your mind.
You needed to talk to Tony.
------
“You sure you don’t feel anything?” At your baleful look, Tony shrugged and looked back at the scan. “Your brain is unusually active.”
“I’ll try not to be offended,” you said with a laugh.
Tony crossed over to where you sat. He looked good for a man who just a few days ago had been basically curled up under his table in a panic. And he had forgiven you for that.
“Make me feel something. Something small, please,” he added with a grin.
You drummed your fingers on the table for a moment before you nodded. Then you focused on Tony and a new feeling.
“God I could eat a cheeseburger,” he commented as his hand went to his stomach. “Wait. Was that it? Was that you?”
You started to smile but then you focused on him some more. There was surprise, under the surface, but you had to actually look for it. It didn’t come out of nowhere.
“I have control?”
Tony clapped his hands together. Then he reached out for your bracelet and tossed it into the trash can.
“It was a prototype anyways. We’ll get one together just in case, but I think we can say you’re off the bench for now.”
You laughed and tossed your arms around his neck.
“Thank you Tony.”
“Yeah, yeah, now let’s get something to eat. Seriously, I’m starving.”
------
A few days after his release, you found Loki in the library. He looked up as you entered as if he knew it was you.
Maybe he did.
“Thank you. Because of what you did, I have control now.”
“I know,” he said with a smile. “Thor said you’ll be going on a mission with them soon to celebrate.”
Yeah, you’d heard that as well. It was exciting, if a little daunting.
“It might do you some good to continue to train with me, if you wish. To perfect your talents.”
You smiled. Then you moved over to sit beside him. Now that you had control, you let your mind open to try to read him.
Silence. You frowned and tried again.
“Because of my powers, I can protect myself,” he said with a tap of his fingers to his temple, a grin on his lips. “I do appreciate the effort though.”
You laughed and looked down at your hands. Nervousness settled over you.
“I just thought if I could read your emotions, I could know if…”
If he was interested in you. If your feelings had influenced him at all.
“You could never influence me, I promise.”
You opened your mouth to ask how he knew that’s what you were thinking, but then you remembered. He’d been in your head. Besides seeing just how horrifically all of your past relationships had ended, he would have felt how you felt about him.
He was putting you at ease. Your nerves started to rise and either he could tell, or he just knew you that well already.
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
You met his eyes and smiled, a little breathless as you thought about the possibilities.
“Not uncomfortable. Just...nervous.”
He leaned in towards you, his grin nearly blinding until his lips met yours.
You didn’t need to be nervous anymore.
X
Thanks for reading!

🍁✨Autumn Troupe Headcanons!✨🍁
Hooray for more uncensored swearing! Sorry, this took so long! It’s hard to think of things for the Autumn Troupe since I don’t know them super well!
🍁🧡Banri Settsu🧡🍁
Whenever it's time for practice, Banri begins by smacking the back of Juza's head! (Not super hard, but enough for it to piss him off)
Diluc main, that is all. Before he got Diluc he was an Amber main, and somehow was good. Still uses her every once in a while!
Slightly intimidated by languages sometimes, I dunno how to explain it, so hopefully the dialogue does!
“Banri, come here for a second.”
“Hell no, I’m in the middle of a match right now.”
“Banri.”
“Sit your ass down and wait, Chikage! I’m busy!”
"Halika dito! Huwag kang humintay na papatayin kita at iwanan kitang dumugo sa lansangan! Inumin ng mga aso ang iyong dugo at kukunin ng mga uwak ang iyong laman. Gusto mo yan?!" ("Come here! Don't wait for me to kill you and leave you bleeding in the street! Dogs will drink your blood and crows will take your flesh. Do you want that ?!" ) I'm unsure of the translation, since the filipino was from Irumaaaaa_saaaaamaaaaa's comment on my Ao3! I just put it into google translate
“Damn! Fine, fine, I’m comin! Chill out!”
His older sister gave him a leopard plushie when he was a kid, which is why he’s fucking obsessed with animal prints!
Plays drums and almost broke the coffee table because he “jammed too hard” on it!
Constantly messing up Taichi’s hair, or he’s drumming to songs on his head.
*boom boom bap boom boom bap*
“Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise, playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday! You got mud on your face, you big disgrace! Kicking your can all over the place, singin'-”
“We will, we will rock you!”
“Haha! Hell yeah!”
🍁💜Juza Hyodo💜🍁
Likes carrying Muku or Kumon on his shoulders! Sometimes they still parade around!
“Are you sure about this, Ju-chan?”
“Yeah, you’re real light, y’know.”
“What the hell are you doing, Hyodo? Practice is soon.”
Chews on things a lot when he’s nervous! He always has gum or a lollipop to avoid chewing on his shirt, his nails and other inedible things!
Uses shorter Mankai members as an armrest, but only the ones who are okay with it! He’s polite like that.
On nights where he just can’t sleep, he’ll go on walks or drive around on his motorcycle!
Terrible with eye contact and looking like he’s paying attention. Sakyo has to snap his fingers at him to make sure he’s listening!
Y’know the awkward sibling hug from Gravity Falls, he and Kumon have done that...a lot. It’s not actually awkward though, they just liked the show!
“Awkward sibling hug?”
“...Awkward sibling hug.”
*embrace*
“...pat, pat.”
....
“Hyodos, what the hell?”
🍁💖Taichi Nanao💖🍁
Cried twice when he got his piercings, the first time was because he was very, very afraid, the second time was because he was so happy that he looked good with them!
Has Heelys! One time, he tried to 'heely' into the rehearsal room, but he immediately fell over!
Plays the ukulele! He wanted to play guitar because he saw someone serenading their partner with it at school! He borrowed Masumi's guitar but bar chords suck and his hands are kinda small, so he settled for the uke!
"Aghhh! How do you play that! That hurts my fingies!"
"I have bigger hands and more experience."
"But you're only like an inch taller than me!"
"Height doesn’t really have anything to do with this."
Has a Tiktok! He doesn't post often, it's more for looking at memes or sick outfits. (He does the dances though! He's pretty good at them but they're all in his drafts since he's not super confident in them!)
Y’know how kids crawl up the stairs really fast. He does that. Constantly. Kazunari joins in, sometimes. It pisses Sakyo off a lot, but he gave up on trying to get them to stop.
"Taicchan, what are you doing?"
"Kazu-kun! I got the zoomies!"
"Nice! Can I join ya?"
"For sure!"
*Rapid thumping up the stairs*
"Aren't you gonna stop them, Sakyo?"
"...If I had that ability, they would've stopped a long time ago. Those idiots don't listen."
He LOVES Sk8 The Infinity! Langa's his favourite character! He's also probably a Reki kinnie!
🍁💙Omi Fushimi💙🍁
(It's blue like his regular shirt and Tumblr doesn't have any other colours ;-;)
Despite being tone-deaf, he hums a lot when he cooks! No one seems to mind it!
Enjoys scrapbooking! He kind of prefers scrapbooks to albums, since scrapbooks have a more homemade vibe, you know?
Gives the best hugs, and tends to hold hands with the younger members when they cross the street!
Regularly has this conversation!
“Banri, have you eaten?”
“I dunno Omi, have YOU eaten?”
“...I have. But that's not what I’m concerned about.”
“...I had a granola bar like, an hour ago.”
“...I’m making you something.”
When he first joined the company, he took notes on what everyone liked and didn't like to eat, plus if they had allergies! He still has it, he just doesn't need to use it anymore!
I feel like something like this has happened once!
“Ah, Omi! Can you help me grab something?”
“Oh, sure. What do you need, Sakuya?”
“Homare asked me to get some of that tea, but I can’t rea-”
*lifts Sakuya like Simba*
“Ah! Omi, haha! What are you doing?”
“Sorry, I couldn’t help it! Do you want me to stop?”
“Oh, no, it’s fine! It’s kinda fun actually.”
🍁💛Sakyo Furuichi💛🍁
Absolutely blind without his glasses, like it’s really bad. He walked into a doorframe without his glasses. Thankfully, no one noticed (he thinks).
He has a bit of bubble-wrap in his a pocket all the time and sometimes he uses it as a threat! (Hopefully that made sense...)
“Settsu, move over.”
“I literally can’t! Your fat ass is taking too much space!”
*pop*
“Just scoot your lazy ass over.”
*pop*
“I can’t I already-”
*pop*
“...Alright, I get it! I’ll shut up! Jeez, how is that so threatening...”
“...Asshole.”
*pop*
“...Sorry.”
Definitely told Azami that Santa wasn’t real when he was like 6.
Sakoda got him a mug that said #1 Dad but he crossed it out and replaced ‘Dad’ with ‘Aniki’! Sakyo still drinks out of it, sometimes!
Azami also made him a friendship bracelet when he was a lot younger. Sakyo doesn’t wear it (because it doesn’t fit him anymore) but he still has it! He likes rubbing the beads between his fingers.
Good at trivia! Like, really good. He somewhat enjoys Trivia Murder Party. (I just watched a play through and skipped to a random question, I have no idea if it’s actually hard lol.)
“Which body of water connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean?”
“Wh- How are we supposed to know that?!”
*Sakyo answers ‘The Strait of Gibraltar’ and is the only one who answers correctly*
“Fuck, my thumb slipped.”
“That shouldn’t be allowed. Sakyo’s shitty and old, he shouldn’t be able to know and remember things.”
“Oi, brat. I’m not that old. You’re not the one who got the answer right.”
“You’re not the one who literally never learned this!”
🍁❤️Azami Izumida❤️🍁
Has smacked too many cans/cups out of Itaru and Tsuzuru’s hands!
“Wh-”
“Drink actual water. And jeez, go take a nap or something. Your skin is even worse than I thought it could get. Aren’t you supposed to be the responsible one in the Spring Troupe?”
“Ah... I guess, you are right. Thanks for looking out for me.”
“W-well! W-we can’t have you on stage looking like a raisin! S-so!”
Often criticizes Izumi’s eyeliner and ends up just doing it for her. N-not that he minds or anything!
Played Love Nikki at some point, I do not take that much criticism.
Because I think the troupe/play themes are canon, he definitely helped with Shake the Shape and wrote some of RESPAWN!
Always has extra hair ties on him, even though most of the others don’t really need them. Most of the time, the hair ties end up being used for...other purposes.
“Ready.”
“What?”
“Aim.”
“Azami, I swear to whatever god is listening, if you fire that elasti-”
“Fire.”
“...You shitty brat-”
“Oh shi-”
Part of the ‘wears nail polish’ squad! He hates stickers. (Most of the time they somehow fall off) His go-to is an alternating pattern of black and red.

All the Obey me! boys discovering MC has kosmemophobia
Turns out I really have to write overly specific scenarios myself, so here I am. This was my first time writing headcanons, it’s more difficult than it looks like, but I managed! It also turned out way longer than I thought it’d be.
Kosmemophobia: a “fear” of jewelry. People with kosmemophobia will either not wear any jewelry at all, or may be comfortable with wearing non-metallic jewelry. Touching or being touched by jewelry makes these people feel somehow dirty (even though we know majority of jewelry is sanitized), uncomfortable, and will make people want to wash that part of their body it touched. People (dare I say mostly afab) usually notice it early on in their childhood. It is not known what makes people kosmemophobic atm, considering people have it since early childhood.
If you have further questions about it, feel welcome to ask. :)
Total word count: 4800-ish
Gender of MC is not mentioned
Slight season 2 spoiler alert in Simeon’s part
Warning for verbally abusive parents in Belphie’s part
You have been warned.
Lucifer
He wanted to make the shopping trip enjoyable for the both of you, but especially for you
He just wanted to take you on a date somewhere where his brothers wouldn’t constantly interfere, even if it was only for a few hours
You two were just window shopping at the mall when Lucifer decided to take you into one of the stores
It was a store with magical items, from stones to a number of different trinkets, including jewelry
Somehow this was the part he was most interested in in the whole shop
Watching him look over it, especially necklaces made you feel uncomfortable and you had a feeling you knew where this was going
With what little hope you had, you subtly tried to nudge him away, but he wouldn’t budge
He finally took one of the necklaces out of the display and turned towards you
"What do you think? Wouldn’t it suit you?“
en he saw your eyes widen and you taking a step back, a shiver running down your spine, he was taken aback. Did he do something?
"Is something wrong? You don’t like it? It’s fine to just say so.“
Oh well, you would have to tell him one day, right?
"N-no, that’s not exactly it, it’s just that just the thought of wearing jewelry or even touching it is making me uncomfortable. I know it’s weird, but please don’t make me do this…“
Well this he did not expect at all. He put the necklace back and putting one hand around you, he turned you around and moved to a part of the shop with crystals and rocks of all different colours instead
"I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Let’s look over something else.“
You smiled at him and nodded. You had him curious about this fear of yours, he might have asked later on to give you more details on it.
Whether you are comfortable with sharing information about this with him or not, he respects your fear and does his best not to make you uncomfortable in the future
Mammon
-          Chaotic snuggle boy was all about protecting you and also hugging you, especially when in private where none of his brothers could see
-          It dawned on him pretty quickly that something about you was strange when you sometimes flinched every time he touched your skin
-          It wasn’t every time, and he just couldn’t understand the pattern
-          One day he had had enough, he just couldn’t wrap his head around it, it was driving him absolutely crazy
-          He finally mustered enough courage to ask you
-          "Oi, human, what is it with ya flinchin‘ when I touch ya?“
-          Damn… he noticed after all. You were trying to hide your phobia as much as you could, but you couldn’t help yourself. Well, better come up with the truth now
-          "Hah, w-well it’s not you, I swear. It’s gonna sound weird, but it’s your rings. The feel of them on my skin feels… uncomfortable.“
-          You tried to explain the feeling as best as you could, mostly how touching jewelry just makes you… want to wash your hands and the feeling appears also on other parts on your body
-          First he blinked in surprise, but listened to your explanation
-          Suddenly it all made sense. He only wore his rings on his right hand. You only flinched when he touched your skin with his right hand. How could he not notice this detail sooner?
-          Well, now he knows. He asks you if you’d rather he didn’t wear them near you.
-          If you say you’re going to hopefully get used to it over time, he will keep wearing them, but sometimes takes them off on his own
-          If you state that you’d rather not have to touch them, he will keep in mind to take them off before going for snuggles
-          Doesn’t really think much about it afterwards, he just takes it as a fact
Leviathan
-          Your birthday was getting closer and Leviathan wanted to get you a gift, but didn’t have many ideas
-          So he decided to invite you over to his room to watch some anime and play games, so that he could subtly take the conversation where he wanted and get an idea of what you might be interested in
-          When watching anime, he saw that you really liked the main character
-          Well what a coincidence! He totally imagined you cosplaying the main character and him cosplaying the character’s best friend. Duo cosplays are always the best!
-          "Oh! I once saw a set of their pendants and bracelets as a set on Akuzon! Wouldn’t it be a nice beginning of another cosplay?“
-          Your face completely changed its expression and you tensed when he mentioned it
-          This, of course, didn’t go unnoticed. Was he wrong all along? Did he assume wrongly that you liked the character? Do you actually not like the character at all?
-          Panic intensifies
-          "Oh no, I am sorry, if you don’t like the character, maybe we can cosplay another duo? Forget I said anything about it-“
-          "Levi… calm down, it’s not that I don’t like the character. It’s just the jewelry I am uncomfortable with.“
-          Oh
-          OH
-          Just like- nevermind, even though he probably watched the majority of anime in existence, he couldn’t remember a character who’s trait this would be
-          You tell him it’s okay, it’s a very rare phobia and not even that known
-          May ask a few questions about it and if there is a loophole for it
-          Either way, the idea of getting you jewelry gets thrown out of the window
-          For you birthday, he gets you and him matching hoodies
-          They‘re so soft
Satan
-          That day, Satan invited you on a date to his favourite bookstore
-          You were totally up for it, who knows, maybe you’d find something really interesting
-          Or something that is SO stupid that you just wouldn’t be able to not get it (Yes, I have one such book, I love/hate it so much)
-          He decided to také you to a bookstore you haven’t been to yet. Yay, more adventure! New store layout! So many possibilities!
-          You were browsing through bookshelves, Satan sometimes told about a few books he has in his own room that this bookstore also had
-          Suddenly he spotted someone and got rather excited
-          It turns out it was one of his aquintances and he wanted to introduce them to you. It was an elegant demon, by the looks of it quite rich
-          You were soon told they were one of the best selling authors of the Devildom, with a rather original, but easy to read writing style, which was probably how they got so famous
-          They wanted to shake your hand as a sign of politeness
-          When you saw the massive rings and bracelets on their hand, you gulped and widened your eyes
-          You didn’t want to be impolite, though, so you decided to shake their hand anyway
-          You couldn’t get the feeling of metal out of your hand and you wanted to go to the restroom to wash your hands real quick
-          Satan noticed you were getting tense as you tried to subtly rub your hand with your other hand and ended the conversation smoothly and took you aside
-          "Is there something wrong? Did they hurt you? You can ask for an apology if they did.“
-          You had to smile at this assumption. It warmed your heart to know Satan cared about you
-          "No, it’s just… have you seen all that jewelry? I am not saying they shouldn’t wear it, it’s their choice, but for me that was a living nightmare.“
-          Well he was glad they didn’t hurt you in any way. He was a bit surprised by your explanation and truth be told, he got very curious
-          After you quickly wash your your hands in the nearby restroom, he wants to know more about your phobia.
-          How long do you have it? How much does it affect your life? How did you find the right term? Do you personally know other people with this condition?
-          And so many more. Feel free to tell him there have already been too many questions answered and that you could continue another day in this interview. He’s already thrilled.
Asmodeus
-          You both planned the perfect spa day together
-          After all, who’d know more how to make you completely relaxed, if not Asmo?
-          You end up having lots of fun and you feel SO GOOD and relaxed after you’re all done
-          You hair has never been so very well taken care of, no matter you lenght or type, he probably gives you some useful advice you’ve never heard of yourself, bt it seems to be working, so why not?
-          And your skin is finally properly moisturized
-          All right, what now? Asmo doesn’t want this moment to end yet, he loves hanging out with you and you still had time
-          You end up visiting Majolish and trying on different clothes, even if it’s just for fun. Asmo loves picking out clothes for you and he really does have a good eye for what would suit you
-          You ended up putting on your 20th outfit. Asmo looked at you and thought for a bit. Something was missing.
-          Yes, sure, the outfit was nice and all, but it was missing something… but what?
-          He suddenly got an idea. He ran off for a bit and soon returned with something in his hands
-          When he got cloce to you again, you realized it was a set of small thin elegant bracelet and a metallic necklace to go with it
-          Your blood froze and you started to back away slowly, putting your arms up in defense and shaking your head
-          "What’s wrong? Do you think it’s too much? Maybe even too little?“
-          Before he could run off again for something different that could be to your taste, you quickly stopped him before he could do so
-          "No, wait, the jewelry… is pretty and you’re right it would go well with this outfit. But I am not willing to wear any jewelry. At all. It’s a very rare phobia and I can’t do much with it.“
-          You were surprised this hasn’t come up sooner, but oh well, it happened now
-          Asmo looked a bit disappointed at first, but upon hearing it’s a phobia, his expression softened and he gave you a little smile
-          "O-oh! All right, back this goes, then! The outfit looks good even without it, I just thought it would be a nice touch, that’s all!“
-          You smiled and nodded in acknowledgment
-          He would definitely question you later if it bothered you on others as well and how much. He’ll make a note to himself to wear as little jewelry as possible when spending time with you, depending what you’re comfortable with
Beelzebub
-          You were just meeting everyone in the human world for the first time
-          You were so excited, you had no idea you would ring the bell and Asmo would open the door
-          Everyone started greeting their favourite human like they haven’t seen you in years, when it’s probably been just a few weeks at most
-          These babies
-          Beel wasn’t home at the time, so you decided to surprise him and wanted to make his favourite human world food
-          Luckily, they already had enough ingrediants in the kitchen, so you didn’t have to go shopping as the first thing you’d do
-          Just as you finished, Beel came home. He got very excited to see you again
-          He took off his jacket and- oh no
-          He wanted to hug you, as was his habit even when in the Devildom, but upon seeing that heavy necklace, you had to move up your hands in defence
-          He got confused. Did he sweat too much and stinks now? Did you not like him anymore for whatever reason?
-          The biggest baby made confused puppy eyes, he just wanted to greet you
-          „Ah, I am sorry, could you please take the necklace off? Jewelry and especially jewelry like that makes me uncomfortable when I touch it.“
-          He sighed in relief. You didn’t hate him after all.
-          He quickly ran off, presumably to his room and came back in a minute, now without the chain necklace
-          You smiled happily and opened your arms, an invitation for him to hug and greet you
-          And he sure did!
-          He was just happy he could hug you again without you feeling uneasy about the situation
-          Doesn’t really ask anything else, just in case you’re not okay with talking about it, but he keeps that fact in mind and is now rarely seen with the chain on
Belphegor
-          You were once more taking a nap together. It became a pleasurable habit of yours to join Belphie. After all, you didn’t have to do anything and got some sweet sweet cuddles. What could be better?
-          Well, you finally managed to fall asleep
-          And Belphie got curious about your dreams, so he decided to visit your dream for once.
-          He was really there just to observe, he didn’t want to interfere with anything
-          He wondered what you’d dream about
-          Was it something really sweet? Would you go on an adventure to find the root of youth? Would you be enjoying a swim in a pool? Maybe you’d meet your friends from the human world
-          The posibilities were endless
-          What he didn’t count with, though, was the possibility of you having a nightmare
-          You seemed to be having a fight with two older humans. Maybe they were your parents?
-          You tried to persuade them not to make you wear the massive necklace the woman was holding
-          They had absolutely none of it
-          "Please, just don’t make me wear it. It’s not like it’s mandatory, nothing will really happen if I don’t put it on!“
-          „Nonsense! You need to! We chose this for you before you were even born, how dare you not want to wear it!“
-          "This youth, I swear, what is it that you want?! That it’s not made of silver?! OF GOLD?! Huh? Is that it? Are you really that spoiled?!“
-          "You don’t understand, I wouldn’t wear it even if it was made of the rarest metal ever! Why is it so difficult to understand it!“
-          Belphie was taken aback. He had no idea you were dealing with a struggle like that. When he thought about it, he realized you never wore any jewelry to anything, you always kept it simple with fabric patterns
-          He wondered if this dream was inspired by real life events
-          Why couldn’t some humans understand the boundaries of others was a hard thing for him to grasp
-          He decided to leave the dream and wake up for a bit. He felt you shivering and when he raised his head, he saw a pair of tears running down your cheeks
-          He hugged you tighter and fell asleep again, joining you in your dream
-          You were now alone, angry and upset at your parents
-          He came up to you and started to calm you down. You appreciated it. He couldn’t deny his curiousity and asked about the situation
-          Truns out talking about it helped you calm down more than anything and he spent the rest of the dream with you
Diavolo
-          Diavolo invited you over to hang out
-          He normally doesn’t have much time off, but since he took a liking to you, he managed to persuade Barbatos to give him more free time to be with you
-          Or he just straight up slacks from his work, he doesn’t really care
-          After sitting in the garden for a while and just catching up with each other, you suggested making anouther castle tour
-          Seriously, the castle is huge, you couldn’t fully enjoy it in a day or two, it took a while
-          He hapilly obliged, he knew the whole castle like the back of his hand
-          And there were so many stories connected to different parts of the castle
-          You loved listening to these stories, it was almost like a proffesional castle tour
-          Private, and for free and told by the actual owner
-          By now you at least vaguely remembered some of the more important royals except for Dia, Barbatos and the brothers. Maybe not in detail, but you can at least say you’ve already heard the name before
-          Today he decided to show you the treasury. You were curious what you’d see and if it also held some interesting stories to be told
-          Once the guards let you inside, you found yourself in a huge room with display boxes. Some of them were open
-          Inside the boxes was… jewelry. All different kinds, sizes and colours. You started to look over them
-          You admired the pieces for the fine craftmanship, you really did. Some of them were beautiful and breathtaking
-          Dia saw your awe and wanted you to experience as much as you can
-          "If you want, you can try some of them on, it’s okay.“ He beamed happily
-          You had to laugh a little. You got a bit nervous, but decided to calmly deny his proposition
-          "Don’t get me wrong, there are some beautiful pieces. The composition of some looks really nice! Some look so mild, yet they still say royalty. It’s almost as if it were engraved on them. But I am happy to just admire from aback, wearing jewelry makes my skin crawl. It’s something I’ve been dealing with my whole life.“
-          He nods
-          "That’s perfectly fine, too. I wouldn’t want to make you upset.“
-          He wonders if it is perhaps a common human thing and when you explain it’s extremely rare, he gets excited because he gets to experience something through you that is not common.
-          The rarity of this phobia makes him curious, so he may have some questions, but not as many as Satan
Barbatos
-          OH HE FINALLY GOT A DAY OFF
-          He needed it. He wouldn’t have ever admitted it, but he got slightly clumsier that day, which didn’t go without Diavolo noticing
-          He protested at first, but had to accept his fate anyway, because Diavolo insisted he take the day off
-          You wanted to spend the day in the mall and visit different shops to observe the differences between the Devildom and the Human world
-          You were supposed to write an essay about differences between these two worlds for the Human studies 101 subject
-          Why you had to take THAT class was completely unknown to you, but you attended anyway. I mean come on, those were some easy grades for you, since you were brought up there
-          And so Barbatos joined you on your adventure through the mall
-          Although there were some differences, most of the shops were similar to what you knew
-          Restaurants, cafés, boutiques, wine bars, adult toys stores, book stores, you name it
-          What you didn’t have in the human world was obviously magic tool stores, potion stores and potion igredients stores
-          Barbatos seemed to really enjoy talking about some of the peculiar potions that caught your eye, be it for their vibrant colours or the fact that some seemes to have sparkles in them
-          At last, you managed to come by goldsmith’s. When you saw this shop, you acted like you didn’t and went on your way to a tea house Barbatos suggested visiting after your tour
-          This surprised barbatos, since you spent some time at least writing the name of the shop down to make a note of it, but you weren’t even acknowledging the existence of this one store in particular
-          Once you both got yor tea in the tea house, he couldn’t help but ask why you just did that
-          "Oh, me and jewelry are old enemies. I don’t like wearing or even touching it, I just always want to wash my hands afterwards. I guess it’s sort of like your relationship with rats.“
-          When you mentioned rats, a shiver ran down his spine and immediately understood what you meant. He just took it as a part of you, the person he adored so much and didn’t qestion it any longer
-          He just suggested if you ever needed to vent, he’d be there for you
Solomon
-          You two made plans to bond together in his room in Purgatory Hall after school to let off some steam and vent to each other like human to human
-          This became a semi weekly tradition for you two, you both enjoyed it and you were glad you could relate to another human being
-          You were also staying for dinner that day, luckily for everyone, it was Simeon’s turn to cook
-          Don’t think he didn’t try to swap with him just so he could "impress“ you, though, he totally did
-          You were glad Simeon didn’t budge
-          After eating your meal, you both just flopped onto the couch and just decided to relax a bit
-          In silence
-          He enjoyed these silent moments, the joy of doing nothing together
-          You two soon drifted off to sleep on the couch, so when Simeon was about to tell you it was time to get you back to the House of Lamentation, and found you two asleep next to each other like that, he let Lucifer know you’d be staying the night with them
-          When you woke up and checked your D.D.D. you  almost jumped out of your skin, but then saw the message from Lucifer knowing about your situation through Simeon
-          You decided to scroll through social media, while Solomon was still sleeping
-          He soon woke up when he heard you looking through memes and trying not to laugh. You were failing miserably, though
-          Oh well, what’s done is done, now he is watching you scroll and when you find something funny, you both laugh, but not too loud, to not wake up Luke. It was around 11PM after all
-          Whenever you scrolled past an ad that was advertising jewelry, Solomon noticed you were furrowing your brows every time you found one
-          What’s more, you even hid the ads, hoping you wouldn’t get another one, but they just kept coming
-          You groaned
-          "Do they really bother you that much?“ Solomon asked sleepily
-          "I normally don’t bat an eye when I see an ad, but I do not and have never worn any jewelry, since I have kosmemophobia and touching or wearing it makes me uncomfortable. But even if I keep hiding these, they just keep popping up like they want to change my mind about it. I would much rather have ads for overprized pencil sharpeners.“
-          Well that was something he didn’t know about you. And he couldn’t even say he knew people that had the same problem as you, since he either didn’t notice it or he really just never met anyone like that
-          He asked a few questions about it, since he didn’t know anything about this phobia, and was glad he could learn something new. Even better that it was about you
Simeon
-          You decided to have picnic in a park
-          Not the most private setting but it’d do
-          You were just chatting about your lives, you mostly telling stories from the House of Lamentation, him mostly talking about his ideas for a new story
-          You were his huge inspiration and sometimes he straight up wrote down one of your stories. He assured you he would mention you as a co-author if he ever decided to publish those
-          It was getting rather late, so you packed up, carefully put all the plates and bowls back into the big basket and folded the blanket you’ve been sitting on the whole day
-          When heading back to the Purgatory Hall, he mostly talked about Luke’s different pastries. Just the description made you hyped up and you wondered if he was making something at that moment
-          You know he did. When you got back, your nose was hit with the lovely smell of cinnamon and apples and you couldn’t wait to try whatever he made
-          You had to put the things on their places first, though
-          Simeon asked you to put the basket to its place and you agreed. What you forgot though, was that its place was in a cupboard… too high for you to reach
-          Lucky for you, you knew a few spells and levitation was one of the first ones you purposely learned
-          Once Simeon saw you looking at the cupboard, he wanted to suggest you to take the folding stairs to help you, but you declined
-          "I want to do this alone, I know I can do it.“
-          He smiled and nodded, he knew he couldn’t change your mind
-          First you managed to open the doors and then you carefully levitated the basket to its place. While you were directing it where to go, your mind momentarily lost its concentration at the basket as you stared intensely at the Ring of Light on you hand
-          The name described it perfectly. It was literally a small band made out of pure light hugging one of your fingers. It was othwerwise incorporeal and only visibly showed when you used your magic
-          It took you a second to regain your concentration and you finally put it to its place
-          However, Simeon definitely noticed your momentary loss of composure there
-          "What made your mind wander off so suddenly?“ he asked, genuinly curious
-          "Oh it’s just… I am still not used to seeing the ring on my finger. It’s so weird, it doesn’t feel like anything, it just shines and what’s most surprising, I don’t feel like washing my hands constantly. It’s what would happen with normal jewelry. I am just not used to it, it’ll probably take some time.“
-          Huh! Okay then! He was just glad it wasn’t something you couldn’t handle
-          In all his long life he never met anyone who would openly speak about being disturbed by jewelry, so this was new experience to him
-          Will have questions, but reassures you you don’t have to answer any questions that might make you too uncomfortable
Luke
-          You two were assigned to find some rare herb that was supposed to be growing in the field
-          Fortunately it wasn’t far from Purgatory Hall so even if you somehow got lost, there was a high chance of actually finding your way back
-          While you were at it, you took it as the perfect time to bond with the young angel
-          So while you were searching, you both started weaving flower crowns
-          It was a fun activity and you even got to tell each other stories
-          You were reminiscing about the time you learned how to weave flower crowns and Luke was telling you things about the Celestial Realm and Michael
-          Once you were both finished, you put on each other’s flower crown and continued looking for the herb
-          Somehow it didn’t take too long for the two of you to find it
-          When you were picking it up, you flower crown fell from your head, but you managed to catch it… and not break it
-          Luke almost shrieked, but sighed in relief that nothing happened to it
-          "I have an idea, what if I transform these to not wilt! You know, like real crowns!“
-          With the mention of that, you just had to ask this question
-          "What would they then be out of, though? Metal? Plastic?“
-          He didn’t understand the intention of your question, so he straight up asked what you meant by that question
-          "Ah, excuse me, I’ll explain. I am kosmemophobic and especially metal jewelry makes me uncomfortable. I they were ot of plastic, though, I wouldn’t mind.“
-          Oh, well that explains it. He reassured you they would feel like out of resin, so you didn’t have to worry at all
-          Now you both have matching flower crowns and you can always remember Luke when you look at it

Harringrove April Day 30- Lily of the valley
There are very few things Billy actually remembers about his mother.
That can be pretty hard for him to swallow at times, the fact that he lost so much of his childhood to trauma, his mind blocking out even the good memories because of his father.
He still remembers the way she smelled when she held him, but he didn’t know the name of the scent she wore, and he remembers the sound of her voice, though he had long ago come to terms with the fact that he’d never hear it again, but the one thing he remembers so clearly about his mother is the lily of the valley tattoo on her forearm.
Neil had hated it from the day she got it, always making her cover it up with bracelets and long sleeves and makeup, but as a kid, Billy was fascinated by it. He would trace over it with his little fingers, the tiny flowers tattooed dark on his mother’s arm, connecting the dots between moles and freckles and petals.
One thing he doesn’t quite remember though, is the way she had cried when he asked if this mark hurt when he touched it like the ones his daddy left on her.
Neil seem to remember it just as well, deliberately mowing over valley lilies when they sprouted or spraying them with weed killer, so one day Billy decides, fuck it, he’s tired of seeing the one thing that truly reminds him of his mother get destroyed.
On his eighteenth birthday, Billy gets the same tattoo.
His is on his shoulder instead, in his head he thought it would look a little tougher there, at least as tough as a flower tattoo his hippie mom used to sport could. Of course, Neil is just as angry with him as he was the first time when his girlfriend came home with the same thing, probably even more so now that it was his son.
The bandage is only off for like, a week before Neil’s punishment comes, which, Billy guesses he should be at least a little grateful that he waited for all the bleeding and peeling to be over before he kicked his ass.
His dad’s not the only one that has a problem with it though, the first time Billy shows up at work without it covered, Billy gets lots of comments and sneers behind his back, all sorts of people who don’t know him saying they thought he was soft, feminine, a huge fucking pansy.
He didn’t think he should have to justify it to them, he lost his mother, he’s damn well allowed to get something on his body to commemorate her if he pleases, but it’s hard not to get a little defensive about it. He almost regrets it, not thinking it through more before he got these delicate flowers emblazoned on his skin, but that’s very much an almost.
Because one night he stands in front of his mirror and traces over the stems, the delicate petals, connecting them to the light freckles around it, blood that soap wouldn't quite reach still dried under his fingernails from the number Neil did on him earlier, and he cries like a damn baby, but he lets go of all that other stuff.
He got it for her , for his momma wherever she was still waiting for him, maybe still looking for him even, not for all of those assholes, and not to prove anything about himself.
So he wears it with pride, he tears the damn sleeves off of his shirts and wears jeans instead of a jacket if it’s a cooler day, and the comments stop coming, because it’s not as fun to say shit that doesn’t get a reaction anymore.
But the rumors don’t stop, and everyone knows as they spread, they change, and suddenly instead of Billy Hargrove being a pussy bitch, the mills churning out nastier shit, like Billy Hargrove’s a faggot, and it’s not safe to have him at the public pool.
There’s a long battle between him and Heather and the managers, and the pool begrudgingly lets him stay, but it’s not without lots of rules. He’d almost rather quit, with how short a leash he’s kept on, but he needs that job if he doesn’t want kicked out.
That’s what he’s complaining about to Steve one day over a smoke, sitting in the back room of the Harrington’s with the sliding door cracked so the smoke could drift out, not that Mr. and Mrs. Harrington would be home anytime soon to notice it.
Steve’s the first person other than Neil to know it was for his momma, and the look he gives him, the sadness and concern in those big brown eyes, it’s enough to make him want to laser that damned tattoo off himself.
He’ll blame the weed for what he does next, lacing his fingers through Steve’s before he can start the pity party, but he hopes Steve doesn’t do the same when he makes the choice to lean over and kiss Billy, delicate fingers barely gracing the dark ink on his shoulder, the others getting lost in tangles of blond hair.
It helps him feel not so bad about the whole thing, getting that burden off his chest, and the kiss with Steve didn’t hurt either, but the next day it’s back to the same old thing at work.
After another week or so though, he notices the gossip has changed, and this time they’re saying Steve’s name instead of his. Steve Harrington’s the pansy faggot now, and Billy has to pretend until he can get out of that chair that he isn’t terrified for the both of them.
He goes straight to Steve’s house after work, tells him as soon as he finds him, “I swear I didn’t tell anybody , I don’t know how it got out.”
And Steve doesn’t look panicked at all, but rather he gives this little smug smile at Billy and says, “I do.” calmly enough that Billy can actually feel his heart shatter, even worse than it had when he woke to find his mother’s car missing.
Steve doesn’t let Billy stew in that heartbreak too long though before he clarifies, “I didn’t want you to have to deal with all that bullshit alone, so I got this.” He holds his wrist out, and shows Billy that he has his own tattoo now too; a sunflower in the same style as Billy’s, thick black outlines with no color.
“I figure, once the initial drama blows over, now that there’s two of us, they won’t be able to say as much.” Steve explains further, looking hopefully at Billy’s face
“Maybe. But until then, you could be in danger, and you’re going to be in even bigger trouble. Seriously, what’s John gonna say?” Billy scolds, panicking on Steve’s behalf whether or not it was necessary.
“And what did Neil say?” Steve argues back, but he knows that’s not productive, so he switches to trying to be comforting instead, “Look Billy, I wanted to do this. For you and for me.”
“It was stupid of you.” Billy says under his breath, taking up Steve’s pale wrist in both of his hands, gently brushing his thumb over the just healed barely healed tattoo, “Sunflowers were your aunts favorites too, weren’t they?”
“Mhm, and I don’t regret it, Billy. I love you too much.” Steve says, the first time he had ever said those three words.
Billy smiles and bends down, bringing his lips to that little monochrome image, and mumbles against soft skin, “Love you too, sunflower.”

An Unforgettable New Year’s Eve | Charlie Gillespie - 2/3
Happy New Year, fantoms! ❤
I hope you all enjoy the second part of my Charlie Gillespie New Year’s Eve fic.
Thank you so much @a-tomb-with-a-view for proof-reading! 🥰
Pairing: Charlie Gillespie x fem! Reader
Warning: none
Word Count: 1,726
Plot: Plot: (Y/N) doesn’t want to go to the new years eve party where her ex would be with his new girlfriend. Sadly, she promised her best friend she’d go. But instead of letting her wallow in self pity, Charlie makes it his mission to give her a new years eve she will never forget, which makes her ask herself one question: Can you fall in love in just one night?
Part 1
Masterlist
Tumblr media
"No, you can totally forget it!" (Y/N) exclaimed, shaking head. "Come on, it'll be fun!" Charlie smiled brightly, trying to pull her towards the ice rink.
"No, it won't. I hate ice skating!" She exclaimed.
Charlie chuckled "You might be the only girl I know who hates ice skating."
"I haven’t skated for ages! I also have two left feet. I’m gonna be awful!" She tried to pull him back.
Charlie stopped and turned towards her. His big hands calmly touched her shoulders. "I won't let you fall, I promise." He looked intensely into her eyes.
"You promise?" She looked at him unsure. Charlie nodded "Cross my heart, hope to die." (Y/N) rolled her eyes playfully "Fine."
Both took on the ice skates and made their way onto the ice rink. Before stepping on it (Y/N) paused. “Changed your mind?” Charlie asked her, confused.
(Y/N) shook her head “No, but I don’t wanna lose my bracelet.” She grasped the metallic object. “I’m glad I didn’t lose it on our ride here.”
Charlie nodded slowly. Suddenly his eyes lit up “If you trust me with your life already for riding a motorcycle for the first time, you would probably also trust me if I keep it in my pocket, right?” he suggested. (Y/N) frowned. “It has a zipper, see. I won’t lose it; I promise.”
(Y/N) chuckled “Those are a lot of promises from you today.”
Charlie playfully rolled his eyes “Well, I’m good at keeping promises.”
(Y/N) smiled softly at him and nodded. Carefully she put the bracelet into his pocket and zipped it. “I trust you.” she smiled. Charlie’s lips turned up into a smile. He held out his hand for her. Gently she placed hers in his andTogether they made their way onto the ice. The ice underneath their feet was freshly cleaned so it was really slippery. Panicking, (Y/N) grasped at Charlie. His strong arms prevented her from falling.
"I told you I won't let you fall." He chuckled. (Y/N) huffed. "Those shoes are gonna be the death of me!"
Charlie laughed "I won't let that happen! Do you trust me?" He smiled softly at her.
(Y/N) looked into his eyes. It made her knees go weak. Luckily, Charlie was by now holding her around her waist, otherwise she would've probably slipped. She nodded slowly "I do."
His smile grew wider. It made her lips turn into a soft smile, too. With Charlie by her side skating wasn’t that scary anymore. With him she could see the fun in it again. (Y/N) took a look around. She spotted families with their children, couples holding hands. The entire time Charlie's eyes couldn't leave her small figure. It made him smile how her eyes took in all what was happening around them.
"Why is it so different today for you here than on every other day during christmas time?" (Y/N) asked, her big eyes looking up to him. Charlie cleared his throat "Well, during the christmas time people might enjoy their time here but you can still see how stressed they're because of getting the perfect gifts and all that. Now the stress seems to be gone. They seem to just enjoy the last hours of this year."
(Y/N) nodded slowly and looked around again. She could feel the happiness around her. People humming to the songs, which chimed out of the speakers around the ice rink. She heard the laughter and chatting all around her. It didn't feel stressful. It felt harmonic. She smiled up at Charlie. "I might ice skate a bit more now. But only on New Years Eve."
They skated for a while, side by side. Her hand placed in his soft grip to keep her balanced. But suddenly Charlie tripped. (Y/N) closed her eyes in panic when they tumbled, expecting to hit the ice but instead she felt his strong arms pulling her into a tight embrace. She opened her eyes slowly and realized that she was lying on top of him. Charlie looked up at her with a crooked smile.
“Are you alright?” he asked, worried.
(Y/N) nodded slowly “Shouldn’t I be the one asking this? It’s you lying on the ground, not me.” she replied, concerned.
Charlie chuckled “I’m alright. Don’t worry about me.”
(Y/N) looked into his eyes but couldn’t find even  a faint hint of him lying. She nodded slowly, trying to get up.
"Maybe that's enough for today.” Charlie said once he stood on his feet again.
(Y/N) chuckled slightly “Yeah, probably.” she agreed. Once they wore normal shoes again she followed Charlie. “Aren’t we going by bike, again?” she asked, confused when they walked past the stands where Charlie had put his motorcycle.
He shook his head. “No, I think we should walk a bit. I wanna show you something. It’s only a few streets from here.” he smiled and held out his hand for her to take.
Smiling brightly, she accepted his hand. “Are you gonna tell me where we’re going?” she asked curiously but Charlie shook his head.
“It’s gonna be a surprise. You’ll love it!”
After walking for some minutes they found themselves in a colorfully decorated street. Colorful lights were all around them. The air around them smelled waffles and roasted almonds. (Y/N) took a deep breath.
“I thought we should grab something to eat, before we move on to another place. What do you like to eat? My treat,” he offered, smiling hopefully at her.
“You don’t have to pay.” (Y/N) quickly replied but Charlie shook his head.
“I nearly let you hit the ice even though I promised I won’t let you fall. I owe you.” He countered.
(Y/N) shook her head “But I didn’t fall, you caught me,” She answered. Charlie sighed, but with a smile on his face.
“I want to pay for you.”
(Y/N)’s smile grew wide after those words left his lips,Her cheeks heating up a bit. “I really can’t change your mind?” She asked him. Again he shook his head.
With a satisfied look and a warm feeling in her stomach, (Y/N) took the last bite of her crêpes. Charlie smiled at her. “You ready?” he asked her, raising from his spot.
(Y/N) nodded and took his hand again. Together they walked down the colorful street and enjoyed the atmosphere around them in silence. (Y/N) took everything happening around her. Even some bands were playing live in this street. It was filled with laughter and joy.  “It’s absolutely beautiful here!” She said, bright smile lighting up her features
Charlie laughed. “I’m glad to see you smile.”
(Y/N) sighed. “Yeah, I really wasn’t in the mood for New Years Eve at that party but you definitely made it better,” She replied. “I kinda feel bad for leaving the party, though. But I just couldn’t see him there.”
Charlie eyed her. “You wanna talk about it?” he offered.
(Y/N) sighed and took a deep breath. "I wasn’t sad because I'm not with him anymore. It’s just…-" she took a deep breath "It just made me realize how replaceable I was." Her gaze fell to the ground.
"I don't think you're replaceable." Charlie smiled at her. "Maybe you just weren't meant to be." He suggested.
(Y/N) looked up to him with a frown. "Meant to be?"
Charlie nodded. "You said you never felt this alive ever with him, right?" (Y/N) nodded slightly. Charlie smiled at her "I think in a relationship you should feel this way with your partner all the time." He shrugged.
(Y/N) nodded slowly "I think you're right." Charlie smiled at her. It made her heart beat a little bit faster. It was crazy. How could someone she barely knew already made her feel this way?
Suddenly Charlie came to a stop. (Y/N) looked at him confused, and found that Charlie was looking at a band playing in front of a café. A smile crept onto his face. He turned to her, “Let’s dance!” he suggested with a big smile.
(Y/N) shook her head, her eyes growing wide. “No, I swear I can’t dance.” She tried to get out of it.
Charlie laughed. “You said the same when it came to ice skating and it wasn’t that bad, right?”
(Y/N) rolled her eyes playfully “Well, we tripped and fell,” she reminded him.
Now Charlie was the one to playfully roll his eyes “Yes, but everything was fine and all in all it was a lot of fun,” He replied, pulling her with him towards the band.
“But no one else is dancing.” she tried again but Charlie just laughed.
“Then we are going to be the first,” he replied, relaxed. He turned around, standing right in front of her. Slowly his hands wandered towards her waist, but came to a halt right before lying down. “Is this alright?” he asked, confidence gone from his voice. (Y/N) nodded. Gently Charlie placed his hand on her waist and pulled her a little bit closer. (Y/N) slowly put her hands on his strong shoulders, andSlowly they started swaying to the music. She felt his gaze on her. Shyly she looked up and was met with his eyes softly looking at her. “See” he said “Not that bad, huh?” (Y/N) chuckled slightly and nodded. A wide smile spread on her face. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so carefree. More and more people started to join them and were swaying next to them to the music. (Y/N) looked around. Everyone seemed to be so happy. Maybe this night wasn’t that bad after all. Suddenly the music stopped. Charlie turned to the band and started clapping. (Y/N) chuckled and did the same. “Come on.” Charlie turned to her with a wide smile on his face. “I know a good place to watch the fireworks but it’s not that close so we have to go now to be on time.”
(Y/N) followed him to his bike again. During the ride she pressed herself closer to him, but not just out of safety anymore. Charlie might’ve taken care of her so far but she just wanted to be closer to him. How was it possible that he could make her feel this way after just spending mere hours together? She couldn’t tell. But she could tell that she was slowly falling for this guy in front of her.

ex finds a stowaway. what happens next may surprise you.
set in @martuzzio‘s space outlaw au, as ever. this was one of the fics i wanted to write early on and i’m super chuffed i’ve finished it. a faster pace to my previous few, but still 5.5k.
featuring: ex goes on a journey of character growth feat. someone who definitely isn’t zedaph, ex actually learns to use the word ‘friend’, some tense brotherly discussions, emotions, ex basically holds zedaph up like ‘whose child is this???’, also try not to think of zedaph as a pack creature on his own for that long with only his shawl for comfort cause that hurts a lot.
warnings: tbh if you’ve read my other fics then you’ll be fine, this is tame. very brief shoot-out. emotions. that’s all i can think of.
In all of Ex's (too many) years alive, it's never taken him this long to notice a stowaway before. He's had them, of course. It's usually kids sneaking onto ships that don't know better. They're looking for adventure. Though, they stop looking once they see him. Dropping them off to their parents or kicking them off his ship is easy enough. When it's more serious... Well, he figures it out. He's not Xisuma, but he's not heartless either. Up until now, he's always found them before he took off, or a few hours into flight.
He finds the blond in the middle of deep space.
It's not like he's hidden well, either. He's curled up tightly in the storage hold, tucked in the corner behind some boxes. His arm acts a pillow, a woollen shawl draped over his shoulders. There's only a small rucksack tucked close to torn robes. From the slow rise and fall of his chest, he's sound asleep. Ex sighs, unsure how to proceed from here. It's too late to turn back and drop him off. He doesn't look very threatening, at least. Ex nudges the guy with his toe, watching him rock back and forth. The guy whines.
"Hey. Get up." Ex gets a frown, blue eyes blinking open. He looks ahead of him tiredly, reaching to rub his face before freezing, bolting upright.
"Wh- oh. Um." Ex reaches for the gun on his hip, twirling it before pointing it at the ground. The blond's mouth falls open. "Oh, that's not good."
"Who are you?" Ex asks, keeping his sentences short. This guy looks flighty as anything, shoulders drawn in so he can lean away.
"Woo- William. My name's William." Ex narrows his eyes, tilting the gun closer to him. The guy squeaks.
"I don't believe you." Ex stares him down.
"That's it, that's my name, I'm not lying. Why would I lie to the scary man with a gun?" He swallows, tacking on, "Please don't kill me." Ex keeps his expression neutral and harsh.
"The hell are you doing on my ship?" He demands. Hopefully he'll be smart enough not to lie about that. The guy twists his hands in front of him.
"I just needed safe passage! That's all. There's some people that don't particularly like me and I just- I had to get away!"
"And what's stopping me from giving you to them?" The look of fear that enters those blue eyes would be enough on its own. The blond, Ex might as well call him William, looks devastated. His whole expression crumbles.
"You-" His eyes dart around the hold. Ex can see his arms tense, ready to push himself up.
"There's nowhere to run. We're in the middle of deep space." William doesn't even look at him anymore. He tugs the shawl tighter around his shoulders, beginning to look very small. His breathing has turned into small puffs. Ex sighs, slotting his gun back in its sheath. "What have you been having to eat? To drink?" He asks. William blinks in confusion, glancing up to him. He doesn't quite make eye contact.
"Um, there's some food in one of the crates. Biscuits. I'm really sorry- I was hungry." Ex sighs, making a decision he's pretty sure he's going to regret. He holds his hand out.
"Come on. Get up." William pulls his shawl closer, eyeing him with apprehension. "I'm taking you to the kitchen, idiot. Unless you want to fade away down here."
"Oh." William quietly releases his shawl, hand hovering. "Can I take my bag?" Ex can't imagine anything dangerous being in a bag like that, but he's no fool.
"Give it here."
"Do I have to?" Ex scowls at him. William visibly pales. He gathers up his bag, pushing it into Ex's awaiting hand.
"You can have it back after you eat. And I make sure there's nothing dangerous in it." Ex slings the bag onto his shoulder, taking some care with the contents.
"Okay. That sounds fair." Ex avoids commenting, offering his hand again. William takes it this time. He's as light as Ex expecting, falling into his front with a panicked, "Sorry!" Ex shakes his head, pushing William in front of him. As harmless as he seems, Ex knows better than to take unnecessary chances.
-
He was right that William looked starved. He's tall but tiny, barely any weight on him. The robe hangs off his frame shapeless, a sash wrapped into a belt keeping it on. William tells him in a quiet voice that he's vegetarian, and then eats the food Ex cooks like he hasn't eaten in a week. And if he's been in the hold only eating biscuits, maybe that's accurate.
"Thank you so much," William pushes the plate away, dropping his hands into his lap. Ex nods, only halfway through his own plate. "I- um. Can't actually remember the last time I had a cooked meal. That was really nice." Ex raises his eyebrows. He's not even going to ask. He has a feeling he won't get a straight answer.
"Did you have a destination in mind?"
William shrugs, "Wouldn't have gotten on a random ship if I did."
"Good. Because I'm not going off course for you." William laughs very gently, pressing back against the chair.
"That's- that's okay. I'll probably just find another ship. That's what I've been doing." He can see William tug at his robe. It shows how thin the fabric is. Ex furrows his brow.
"How long have you been running?" He asks. William looks surprised at the question. He tugs the robe tighter, shifting his shawl from its position. He resets it quickly.
"I don't remember." William's voice is incredibly small. Ex silently curses. He swore to himself a long time ago he wouldn't get attached to humans. He's never understood Xisuma and his ever-changing entourage. Their lives are so short. Blink and you miss it. But, here, this one, sat across from him. Ex knows how exhausting running is.
He's growing attached. Damn it.
-
He's proved right when Ex shows him to his room. He gives William's bag back. There was barely anything in it anyway. A spare robe, empty water bottle, a broken thread bracelet, a notepad (detailing his travels, Ex thinks), a de-tangling brush and a tiny amount of change. He's pretty confident this guy isn't a threat to him. He'll keep the bedroom door locked anyway.
"Um." William pauses at the door, cradling his bag. Ex crosses his arms. "Thank you. Again," he says, "You've been really nice to me. I appreciate that."
"It's a few weeks until the next port," Ex tells him. William nods.
"I can help out where I can?" He suggests. "I can... Clean or cook, maybe? I'm not very good at it but-" Ex holds his hand up and the rambling trails off.
"Tomorrow. I'll find something." William's shoulders relax.
"Thank you."
-
True to his word, Ex finds him something to do. Sure, it's dusting, but it's an easy way to keep an eye on him. Ex is no idiot. He's thought things through. He doesn't need to let William near any dangerous chemicals, he can steer him from important machinery and he's not going to do much to Ex with a duster.
He doesn't think he'd be able to do much anyway with that little muscle.
Ex tries to remember what he's learnt about humans. It's not like he's unfamiliar with them, the damn things are everywhere. Fragile yet resilient, they find their way into everything. Ex did his best to avoid them. Now, he has no idea what to do with this one on his ship.
He's pretty sure this is an adult human, at least. The children are usually smaller and talk in higher voices. Far more annoying, too. William listens to him. He stays out of Ex's way, always on the edges. Ex feels slightly reassured he's not accidentally kidnapping a child. That's the last thing he needs. His bounty is high enough. Sure it isn't kidnapping if he came onto the ship himself, but like the authorities care.
Two days after Ex found William, the blond approaches him.
"Um." He's holding the front of his shawl, tugging it tighter around him. He's not changed clothes yet. Though, what would he change into? "I was just thinking I- uh. I don't know what to call you." William shifts from foot to foot. "You don't have to tell me, of course! That's fair! But I keep calling you scaryblueishman in my head which is kind of rude." Ex raises his eyebrows, staring down at the human.
"Ex." Blue eyes narrow.
"Ex?" William sounds confused. "That's just a letter."
"E-X," he spells out, with a dead stare. William still looks skeptical but he nods, mouthing the name before he speaks again.
"Okay. Ex." He nods again, a bit more confident. "It's nice to meet you properly." Ex grunts, turning away to focus on directions. William doesn't leave, his shadow moving awkwardly in Ex's peripherals. Ex finally glances to him.
"What else?"
William takes a deep breath, "Is there a way I could clean my robe? I mean, I'm happy to just do it in a sink with water, but I wanted to check first." Ex wrinkles his nose.
"Please do." William shrinks in, tugging his shawl tight. He focuses on the ground.
"Sorry, yeah. I'll- I'll do that." William skitters away quickly and Ex is left with the feeling he said the wrong thing. He frowns, before deciding it isn't his problem. If William has an issue, he can deal with it.
-
At dinner that night, William is dressed in his other robe, and his hair is heavy with water. With his face clean, he has a pleasant glow to his cheeks. Ex is surprised how much healthier it makes him look. He sits at the counter with him, in the routine they've silently established.
"I'll wash this one tomorrow," William tells him. "But I needed something to wear whilst the other one dried soooo...." It's the first time Ex has seen him without the shawl on. Part of him wants to ask where it is.
"Didn't you use the dryer?" Ex asks instead, pointing to his hair. William pats it, face opening up as he remembers it's wet.
"It's wool. I have to let it air dry or it shrinks." He pretends to shiver. "That's never fun, do not recommend." Ex's thoughts come to a crashing halt. He was fairly certain humans didn't have wool for hair. He knits with wool. Is this some kind of genetic tampering again? Humans always seem to do that.
"Wool?" He questions, seeing an opportunity to prod into William's past either way. William nods, pulling out a strand of hair. It reveals the tight waves in it. Then he seems to realise what Ex is asking and blanches.
"Oh- uh." The hands withdraw back, pressing into his lap now he has no shawl to fiddle with. "You thought I was human, didn't you?"
"You're not," Ex replies, keeping a blank tone. William shakes his head, hair swishing as he does.
"Most people think I am but- well, you're already doing me a big favour by not killing me." His eyes dart to him and back to his plate. "So, uh, I guess I'm related to humans? I'm mostly human. But I'm like... Also related to sheep."
"Sheep," Ex checks, "Those big fluffy things that humans used to farm?"
"Yes! Those!" William bounces in his seat. "I look human so usually I just pretend I am. Makes life easier. But, kinda slipped up here." He fiddles with his robe. Ex can understand that. He's often thought his life would be far easier if he was just a human. But his life would be far easier if a lot of things were different. Being a more common species is a star in the galaxy against his problems.
"Does this mean I get to know your name?" Ex asks. He's surprised how pleased he is when William laughs at his teasing. There’s not a hint of nervousness in it this time.
"You're still stuck on that, aren't you?" William leans forward on the table. "I'm gonna keep it secret. Give you a reason to keep me around."
"So you admit it's not your name."
"Ah." William looks to the side. "You got me there." Ex smirks, continuing to eat. He can't remember the last time he made someone properly laugh. Probably Xisuma. William, whatever his name is, he's... He's not bad.
-
He finds himself trusting William as more time passes. He's given him no reason not to. William follows him into the engine room to figure out why a light keeps flashing. He sits in the navigation bay as Ex redirects around a police stop. He watches and he learns. He talks, too. Ex is amazed someone can chatter so much.
The first few times he trails off once he realises he's doing it. So Ex tries to encourage the conversation. He grunts, nods, tries all those things you usually do. Things he's never cared for before. He likes listening to William speak. The way his brain jumps from topic to topic. He's surprisingly sharp for someone stowing away on an outlaw’s ship. Ex would never admit it, but he prefers it to the silence.
"You might be able to move that wire," William points out. The damn targeting system has stopped working this time. He should’ve known better than to take the cheap junk. "Connect it directly into the power source. Seems like the surge detector is malfunctioning." William rests his hand on his chin. "Actually, test the surge detector with something else first. In case it's a problem with the power source." Ex nods, before looking at William with suspicion.
"When did you become a technician?" William laughs quietly, scratching the back of his hair.
"Um, picked it up over time," he replies. "My friends used to be really good at it so I got the basics from them. Then I kinda needed to know to survive." There's something tight in William's voice when he mentions his friends, how he skips over it quickly and continues explaining what they should do. Ex doesn't comment on it any further. It's hardly like William will be sticking around.
-
Until they reach the next port. William quietly asks where he's going next. Ex tells him. He doesn't bring attention to the relief in William's eyes.
-
They become travelling partners after that. William is there with excited comments and a bounce in his step. He has a surprising range of technical know-how, with unconventional but surprisingly effective solutions. Ex finds himself enjoying the company. He thought he'd mind more. Silence is something he's used to. Something he could retreat into for safety. William never pressures him. He doesn't expect replies. He fills a space Ex didn't know needed filling.
And Ex learns things. William speaks fondly of his family, but he hasn't seen them for a long time. He has a wide knowledge of ships, various organisations and federations. He has a sharp wit, he enjoys watching comedies, he likes napping where Ex is nearby. It's been a long time since Ex has tried to learn about another person. He writes down each small fact so he doesn't forget.
He does ask one day, "You are an adult, right?" William looks up, his smile full of cheek.
"On paper!" So, he gives up on that enquiry. He'll just assume he is.
But William never brings up his friends again. If it weren't for the brief mentions of family, Ex would assume he didn't have a life before meeting him.
That changes, one night.
Ex stopped locking William's bedroom a long time ago. It's so rare he leaves his room anyway. Ex trusts him with far worse around the ship. He wakes up too easily for William to sneak up on him. Or doesn't sleep at all. Like tonight, Ex wanders the ship aimlessly.
He finds William on the bridge. The systems are powered down for the night. It's a piece of junk, but the windows still tower over them. William is sat against one, a shadowed silhouette against the stars. His shawl is slipping off his shoulder. There's something sad in his eyes, the stars reflected in the blue. Ex's footsteps are silent. He sits across from William and blue eyes turn to him.
"Sorry," William's voice is so quiet in the open space. "Did I keep you up?"
"I didn't know you were here," Ex replies. William smiles, resting against the window again. He looks small against the stars.
His next words are quieter, "It feels so lonely, sometimes." Ex watches William tug his shawl tighter, pull his legs a bit closer. "All of this space."
"I've been alone for a long time," Ex tells him. "I'm used to it." William looks at him closely and Ex feels more examined than he has in a long time.
"I'm not sure if I pity you or I'm jealous."
"I'm not sure if I should be insulted." William smiles. It doesn't reach his eyes.
"I wish I could just not care." He breathes out, shaking slightly. "I miss them so much. It's been years." Years aren't very long to Ex, but he doesn't mention that.
"Your family?"
"No-" William turns back to the stars "-My friends."
"Can't you see them?" William's laugh is more of a sob.
"I'm pretty sure they're dead." He stands, pulling his shawl tight. With the light on his face, Ex can make out the shine of tears. "I'm going to sleep. I'm sorry."
By the time Ex can find the words to reply, William is already gone.
-
The next day, whilst they sit together in the common room, William speaks for the first time since that conversation.
"My name's Zedaph." Ex turns to him quickly. "My real name."
"That sounds less real than William," Ex replies, furrowing his brows. William, well, Zedaph, now, gasps in mock surprise.
"Says the person with a letter!" He cries, prodding his finger forward. He can’t reach. Ex smirks. He'll write that down later. Zedaph.
-
Zedaph only gets more bubbly now he's revealed his name. It occurs to Ex he could use it to look him up. He could unwrap this mystery of a person. Yet he... Doesn't. Zedaph is- Ex doesn't want to betray his trust. Zedaph has brought something new to his miserable life. He's precious. Ex doesn't want to break what they have.
Except he messes up.
Zedaph doesn't even have armour as the authorities unload on them. Ex shoves him forward, putting up a shield behind them so they can run. Zedaph stumbles as a shot bounces off the shield. He grabs a table from outside the cafe, dragging it over onto the pavement. Ceramic shatters across paved streets, water spilling into cobbles. People are standing, with loud gasps and shouts. Zedaph looks to Ex, nodding before sprinting alongside him. Ex grabs his wrist, using his free hand to fire shots back at the authorities in the hopes of keeping them away.
They turn a corner and Ex doesn't hesitate to pull Zedaph down another side alley. He refuses to let either of them drop the pace, keeping Zedaph firmly beside him. It takes several more twists and turns until Ex is certain they've lost their pursuers. He still keeps a brisk pace, determined to get back to the ship before they're spotted. Zedaph is puffing beside him.
"I knew this was a mistake," Ex mutters. He still has his hand digging tightly around Zedaph's wrist.
"What?" Zedaph asks. His feet are dragging as he tries his best to keep up. Ex huffs, glaring at him.
"You," he spits. "You've got no armour, you could've died if they shot you. I should’ve left you at that port. This is my damn fault." Zedaph's eyes narrow into a returning glare. He tries to snatch his arm back from Ex but Ex holds fast.
"No, that's not fair," he protests. "To start with, they were after us because of me." Ex holds his arm still between them, halting them both. There's barely room to breathe in the tight alley. He hates these small towns.
"Why would they be after you?" He demands. Zedaph doesn't back down.
"They found me in their record room. I ran but they must've recognised me." Ex stares the blond down, watching as he breathes heavily. He finally yanks his arm, setting a quick pace.
"We're talking about this on the ship," he tells him, voice firm.
"Of course we will," Zedaph mutters. Ex doesn't dignify him with a reply.
-
"Why would you do something so stupid?" He never realised how tall Zedaph is until he's glaring back at him, hands bunched in his shawl. His bag has been thrown on the ground.
"I do it at every planet," Zedaph replies, voice raised but not shouting. "This is just the first time you've noticed."
"And you didn't think to tell me this?"
"I told you there were people after me," Zedaph retorts. Ex rolls his eyes.
"You didn't say that was the police."
"Well, they're one of them. Happy now?"
"What did you even need to be in the stupid record room for?" Ex can barely keep still for his frustration. This stupid, fragile idiot. "What's worth risking your life for?" Zedaph stalks to his bag, picking it up and clutching it in his arms.
"I have to try, okay!" Zedaph doesn't meet his eyes. He's curled around his bag protectively, twisted away from Ex. "For my friends! My best friends-" His voice breaks. Zedaph buries his face into the bag, shoulders shaking and oh god- he's crying. He's crying and this is all Ex's fault.
He barely gets his arms around Zedaph in an attempt at a hug for him to fall against Ex. The bag is squashed between them, and Ex does the best to rub his trembling back, unsure what to do or say.
"There there?" He attempts, thinking to parents and their children. A laugh bubbles out of Zedaph. He steps away but there's still tears in his eyes. He rubs at them with the back of his arm.
"You don't- you don't have to do that." Zedaph smiles at him, his cheeks still shining. "This is kinda stupid, isn't it? Oh my word, I feel like a kid all over again. Crying over things I can't change." Ex pretends that sentiment doesn't hurt.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asks. Zedaph hesitates. He actually thinks before he replies.
"Sure-" he shrugs "-at this point, why not? "
He keeps his bag with him as they settle in the common room. He wraps his legs around it, pulling out the small book that Ex remembers. Ex sits on another chair entirely, crossing his legs.
"I should start at the start, right?" Zedaph asks, peering at Ex under damp eyelashes.
"That might help," Ex agrees. Zedaph nods, resting his head on his bag.
"I used to have a really close herd," he begins, speaking softly. "One of them I think is okay. Skizz. But I've not been able to find him." He rubs circles onto his knee. "The other two are- were called Tango and Impulse." Something pings in Ex's head. He tries to place why. "We were a team, you know? And then just- they were gone and dead and I didn't want to believe it. I don't want to believe it."
Zedaph holds his book out. Ex takes it, opening the pages and flicking through.
"Every time I reach a port, I try to see if someone matching their descriptions has gone through." He shrugs, simply looking sad. "They never have. But I can't break the habit."
"These are the two that taught you tech?" Ex asks, pieces coming together in his head.
"Yeah!" Zedaph brightens up slightly. "The two of them were incredible. They came up with such amazing designs. For everything. The three of us could fly any ship we wanted to." He squeezes his knee. "I was never really as good as them. I can't even fill their shoes."
Ex frowns, "Don't you see how impressive you are?" Zedaph blinks at him, blue eyes wide.
"Um? No?" Ex closes the book, giving it back to Zedaph. Zedaph strokes the cover before slotting it away safely. "I can't design massive machines. Or work engines. I'm just- I'm me."
Ex raises his eyebrows, "You've successfully evaded police and however many other groups. You've kept detailed records of where you visited. You're able to make things work I'd given up on. You’re funny. Don't you see that?"
"You don't know them."
"No." Ex doesn't change tone. "But I know you." Zedaph squeezes his shawl.
"I'm not going to change your mind, am I?"
"You could always tell me more about them." Zedaph smiles very slightly, sinking into the seat.
"Yeah," he agrees. "It's been... Too long. I'd like to keep their memory alive somehow."
Ex listens closely to every word that Zedaph says. He talks into the early hours of the morning, stories upon stories. Of Impulse and how he tried to keep them together but was really just as chaotic most of the time. Tango and his fire hair, it's really amazing and his crazy ideas he somehow made work. The farms they’d come up with together, pouring over schematics into the early hours of the morning.
And Ex has all the pieces.
He needs to contact Xisuma. Damn it.
-
Ex doesn't want to be selfish. The thought crosses his mind. He could keep Zedaph all to himself and he'd be none the wiser. Ex would have company. They'd both be happy.
But.
How long can he keep Zedaph safe? It would be his fault if those blue eyes no longer shone as he laughs. The people after Ex are far worse than those after Zedaph. And Ex, as much as it pains him, doesn't want to be selfish. He doesn't want to be the reason Zedaph never sees his friends again.
He types out the message in silence that night.
[Ex] ive got somebody for your crew.
-
"And you're sure I can't come with you?" Zedaph asks, for possibly the fifteenth time that morning. Ex nods, keeping his eye on the coordinates of Xisuma's ship. It's been a long time since he's landed in there.
"You don't even have armour," Ex replies. Zedaph scoffs, spinning around in the co-pilot seat.
"I don't have to leave the ship," he suggests. "I could just sit here and look pretty."
"It'll be safer," Ex repeats, for what also must be around the tenth time. "It's a much bigger ship too. More people than just me. You’ll have space to spread out." Zedaph sighs, sliding down in the seat until he's nearly lying down.
"But what if they don't like me?" He exclaims. "At least you do."
"For now." Zed sits up at that with a noise of protest.
"Don't you start being mean," he complains. "I just don't get it. We've been fine, this works. Then we get in one firefight and you freak out!" Ex sighs, checking as they get closer.
"I've not done anything dangerous around you," Ex tells him. "And I am a dangerous man."
"You literally let me sleep on you because you're too afraid to move me," Zed points out. "You're hardly- oh, that is a really big ship." Ex looks up as Xisuma's ship comes into view in all her glory. Zedaph stares, open-mouthed at the sight. "You're putting me on that?" He asks, his face a picture of shock.
"She's a good ship, with a good crew. You'll fit in well." Zed pulls his shawl tight.
"Do you think so?" He asks.
"I know so," Ex replies. He mentally prepares himself. "You're a good friend, Zed. They'll love you." The smile on Zedaph's face is brighter than any star Ex has seen.
"Will you see me on board?" Ex sighs, before shaking his head. He doesn't want to deal with the emotions. Seeing Zedaph reunite with his proper friends. Leaving Ex behind.
"My brother will look after you," Ex tells him instead. Brother is easier than clone. There's parts of his history Zedaph simply doesn't need to know.
"I trust you."
Has anyone ever trusted Ex before?
-
Ex is there as Xisuma enters the ship. Zedaph looks between the two of them, eyes squinted.
"You really do look alike, huh." Xisuma shoots Ex a look. Ex shakes his head very slightly. He knows X will get the message.
"You must be Zedaph." Xisuma holds his hand out, offering a friendly smile. "Ex has told me about you." Zedaph smiles, accepting the handshake.
"You must be Xisuma." Zedaph nods. "It's a pleasure to meet you, sir." Ex snorts at the panicked look on Xisuma's face. His brother waves his hands quickly.
"Nope, none of that. Calling me sir makes me feel far too old."
"You are far too old." Ex throws his arm around Xisuma's shoulders, purposefully knocking him off balance. "You take care of the squirt, got it?"
"Hey!" Zedaph places his hands on his hips. "I'll call you a squirt if you're not careful." Xisuma laughs, shaking his head at the two's antics.
"Of course, of course. They're all excited to meet you. Are you ready?" Zedaph gives Ex a long look. He holds up a finger.
"One minute." He jumps forward, wrapping his arms around Ex and trapping him in a hug. He's gone from a twig to nearly dislodging Ex's footing. Impressive. He raises his arms, awkwardly settling into the hug. Zedaph's grip is tight enough to squeeze his lungs.
"You know I'm gonna miss you, right?" Zedaph steps back. He pokes a finger into Ex's chest. "You better stay safe out there. I want you to visit me."
"Yeah," Ex agrees, trying to hide the uncertainty in his words. "I will." He doesn't know which one he's agreeing to. Zedaph gives him a final smile. He turns to Xisuma with all of that boundless energy.
"Okay! Let's go." Xisuma nods, letting Zedaph take the lead. He pauses at the door.
"I promise to keep him safe," he tells Ex.
"You better."
It's barely two minutes until the feeling hits him. The ship feels so much emptier now.
-
"Why didn't you see him off?" Ex turns to find Xisuma standing beside him with his arms crossed. He stares into the distance, looking like a trademark wise old man. Ex scoffs at the sight, resisting the urge to cross his own arms.
"He won't have any trouble getting used to your ship," he replies. Xisuma looks at him, purple eyes trying to see into Ex's soul. Ex won't let him.
"That wasn't what I asked." Ex sighs, frustrating boiling over.
"How do you do it?" He demands, turning to Xisuma with clenched fists. Xisuma hardly reacts, his expression gentle as ever. "You let these people in your life knowing you're going to lose them. Again and again." It's with those words that Xisuma looks away in thought. Ex releases his fists, realising for once, he's asked something X doesn't have an immediate answer to.
"You want the honest answer?" Purple eyes lock with purple eyes.
"Why?" Ex sneers. "Are you planning to lie to me again?" For not even a second, Ex can see Xisuma flinch. It's such a minute shift in expression that the ordinary person wouldn't notice. Shame that Ex is looking at his own face.
Xisuma pities him. Even now.
"No." Xisuma bows his head. "Because you won't like it." Ex scowls at him. He gestures his hand out for Xisuma to continue. With that same gentle expression, Xisuma sighs. He takes Ex's hand into his own and lowers it between them. "I do it with great difficulty, Ex. Is that the answer you want?" Ex freezes, unable to reply as Xisuma looks directly at him with sad eyes.
Someone shouts for Xisuma inside the landing bay. The stupid admin glances in that direction, calling out a response. He squeezes Ex's hand as he faces him. Ex snatches it away.
"I'm going to send you his number," Xisuma tells him. He gives no room for Ex to argue. "It's your choice if you stay in contact."
"Why should I?"
"Having a friend isn't going to kill you, Ex." He doesn't appreciate Xisuma's dry tone. "Consider it." Ex huffs, a stray white strand flying from his face.
"Fine."
-
[Xisuma forwarded a contact: Zedaph]
[Xisuma] He speaks highly of you, you know?
[Ex] is this your way to convince me
[Xisuma] Maybe.
[Xisuma] And it's nice to hear that somebody else cares about you.
...
[Ex] shut up
-
[Ex] sup loser
[Ex] heard you missed me
[Zedaph] Ex!!!!!!!
[Zedaph] You absolutely knew, didn’t you? I hate you so much.
[Zedaph] Oh, I have so much to catch you up on.
Ex rolls onto his side on the bed, content to watch the messages roll in.

MC, what would Ethan rather?
Beer or Wine
A Cruise or Camping
Horror Movie or Chick Flick
Stay at home or Go out in the rain
Get up early or Stay up late
Ethan, what would MC rather?
Cook dinner or Do the dishes
Diamonds or Pearls
Live in the city or Live in the country
Walk on the beach or Dance in the club
Travel overseas or Explore locally
Lovely Bree💕! (@jamespotterthefirst) Thank you so much for these fun questions. I had an amazing time answering them❤❤
Week 1 I Week 2 I Week 3 I Week 4 I Week 5
Tumblr media
Pooja, what would Ethan rather?
‌Beer or Wine
Pooja bursts out laughing
Ethan: What's so funny?
Pooja: I was just thinking about that time when you drank beer. That ONE time.
Ethan: I didn't drink it because I wanted to, I drank it because the people offering it were my friends and my girlfriend was giving me puppy eyes.
Pooja: (Giggles) Ethan would rather dies that drink beer. Honestly, he doesn't even drink wine. It's just scotch, all time, every time.
Ethan: Just say that I have taste.
Pooja: Says the man who whined about the drink all his way back home.
Ethan: I did NOT whine.
Pooja: Suureeee.
‌A Cruise or Camping
Pooja: Just imagine. You, on a cruise. With people. Actual, walking, talking people. Having to socialize.
Ethan: (suffers in silence)
Pooja: Tell me, can you imagine? (looks at him) Because I seriously can't.
Ethan: (still suffering in silence)
Pooja: Taking your silence as my cue, I will say camping. Becase A. It has memories associated to when he asked me to move in with him B. He cannot bear people and C. Camping has a tranquility and calm that nothing else can provide (Pauses) You know, if I think about it, we both are quite similar when it comes to socializing (giggles)
The only difference I can think of is that I don't downright hate people, I just can't bring myself to socialize, whereas he just hates them.
Ethan: If you had not made the comment, i would have did it on my own.
Pooja: Is it revenge that you were planning on, Ramsey?
Ethan: You will see.
Horror Movie or Chick Flick
Pooja: Honestly, no comments on horror movies. Mostly because I cannot watch them to save my life, because it is sure that I won't sleep and I won't be able to go anywhere alone, and I have never asked if he watches them alone when I am not around.
(looks at Ethan expectantly)
Ethan: Those so called investigators in those movies are stupid.
Pooja: (shakes her head, humored) Of course, how can I not expect you to do your own detectiving when you watch those?
Ethan: Did you just make up a new word?
Pooja: Yes
(whispers) I stole it from the Professor.
Ethan: So your answer is?
Pooja: Chick flicks.
Ethan: You're wrong,
Pooja: Look into my eyes and tell me that they are absolute rubbish and you can't bear a single second of them.
(Ethan doesn't)
Pooja: Come on, do it!
Ethan: (a long sigh) ...Fine. They are not... totally terrible.
Stay at home or Go out in the rain
Pooja: It took me 84 years to convince him to go outside during the rains.
Ethan: Why weren't you named Drama when you were born?
Pooja: I have no idea! (thinks for a while) It would have been an interesting name, by the way. Whenever someone would announce my arrival, they would be like "Here comes Drama!"
Ethan: (Rolls his eyes) And to correct you, I still prefer staying at home when it rains...
Pooja: ...when you are alone. Which is rare.
Ethan: That's only because you ask me to, not because I want to.
Pooja: And also because you get to dance with me.
Ethan: ...That can be considered.
Get up early or Stay up late
Pooja: Early bird. (To herself) I will never understand how people can wake at 4 in the morning and still function like normal humans.
Ethan: And what I cannot comprehend is someone, who cannot wake up at six, like normal, function humans, works at three in the morning like she is ready to take down the world.
Pooja: You're the early bird to my night owl, we are the perfect pair.
Ethan: (Gives a radiant smile) That we are.
Ethan, what would Pooja rather?
Cook dinner or Do the dishes
Ethan: Dishes, only because she gets to play with the soap bubbles.
Pooja: Have made it a motto to find fun on the most mundane things.
Ethan: A skill I will never have.
Pooja: Don't worry, love. You have me.
Ethan: And I am definitely grateful for that.
Diamonds or Pearls
Ethan: Diamonds. Because they are elegant and timeless, according to her.
Pooja: They are.
Ethan: I still remember that diamond bracelet you wore to Miami.
Pooja: (Smiles) Yaa, it's an heirloom. My mother got it made when my sister and me were born. It has twelve stones, as a marker of our date of birth. According to her, we made her life as radiant and beautiful like a diamond.
(Wipes a tear from the corner of the eye while Ethan puts his hand around her shoulder) Just... more reasons to love it.
Live in the city or Live in the country
Ethan: Somewhere in the country, but close enough to the city. A balance between the quiet and the hustle.
Pooja: (Looks at him, enamoured) You know me better than I know myself.
Ethan: (Gives her a kiss on the cheek) Isn't that why you are marrying me?
Pooja: (Returns the cheek kiss) It sure is.
Walk on the beach or Dance in the club
Ethan: Walk on the beach. Even though she prefers mountains over seas (Looks at Pooja)
Pooja: Don't look at me like that! I never said I hate seas. I like them. But if given an option between mountains and seas, I will pick mountains.
Ethan: She will always pick nature. Always.
Pooja: I always look for an escape, a calm. And nothing calms me as much as the nature.
Ethan: (Looks at her adoringly, with a smile on his face)
Travel overseas or Explore locally
Ethan: A bit of both.
Pooja: There's a joy in both, and I am not missing out on any.
(Ethan sits quiet, probably planning to take her on a local exploration on their next day off)
----
Pooja: (Turning towards Ethan) I remember you said you would take your revenge?
Ethan: Maybe I will, Maybe I won't. You will never know until I do it.
Pooja: I will be on my lookout Mister. You can't fool me.
Ethan: We will see that.
----
Did Ethan take his revenge? Did he not? We will never know.

Previous Chapter: XXX
___
Calling the walk back through the woods a “terrible fucking idea” would be an understatement. Never understanding why those two hard-asses didn’t just steal a car or two will always be in the forefront of your mind when finishing a mission. But hey, at least you had Brian to keep you occupied during your walks.
“Can’t we just make a portal to the cabin and call it a day?” You groaned, shuddering against the freezing wind that danced around you. Brian’s footsteps walked next to yours in the almost frozen ground around you. “Unfortunately for us, we lost the ability to make portals when Jeffery started making portals from his bedroom to the communal kitchen,” he said, his voice was gruff and clear when not muffed by his voice changer. You chuckled a bit before your expression soured, remembering what Jeff’s actions cost your tiring legs. Brian noticed your slight change in demeanor and decided to change the topic to distract your mind. “Hey, I’m sure we’re close. And I've been meaning to talk to you about something, Well two things.”
Your face puzzled before you gave him a reassuring look, letting him go on. He turned back to look at Tim to gauge if he'd be able to hear the conversation in question, after a few seconds Brian turned to you again, lowering his voice. “Do you ever wish you never accepted Slender’s offer? Like, do you ever wonder what would’ve happened if you said no, or if you never got wrapped up in this in the first place?” You paused and thought for a second before giving him your answer, you never really thought about that before.
“Honestly? I’d probably still be stuck in my hometown. I think I’m glad I took this job in a way. Although the cons definitely outweigh the pros most of the time.” You chuckled, thinking back on your home life before stopping yourself, knowing the pain it would bring you.  Your life before becoming a proxy wasn’t all that glamorous, but thinking about the people you left behind and what you could've been always left an indecent taste in your mouth.
“Cons?” Brian quizzed, hoping for an elaboration. You sighed and watched the breath turn into fog in front of you. “Well y’know, if I knew I would have interacted with some unsavory people I don’t think I’d take the job.” You joked. Hopefully, Tim didn’t hear that. You sunk into your jacket, hoping to bring a little more warmth to you. “Speaking about a certain unsavory coworker of ours,” You turned to peak at Tim for a final time before continuing. It looks like he wasn’t paying attention and was too far behind to even hear anyway, so you let yourself go on. “Has Tim always been this mean to previous co-workers? Like, that Toby guy that’s been on that year’s long mission, was Tim a dick to him?” You sighed, you didn’t know why this bothered you, But the tension continues to fuck with you nonetheless.
Brian stops for a quick rest, and you follow suit. “I guess he's always been kinda brash to people he doesn’t know, but never this bad and for this long.” He said. Your thoughts filled up the silence that had settled between you two. You’ve been here for, what? Almost three years and Tim still couldn’t get a grasp on the fact that he had to work with you. You huffed in annoyance. Brian watched you and decided to speak up again. “Why does it even bother you if you hate him the exact same?” You spit on the forest ground and glared at Tim, even though he probably couldn’t hear a damn thing you said. “It doesn’t.”
*time skip to the later in the cabin*
“Brian… We’re friends, right?” You asked, a drunken tint flushed your cheeks as you spoke. The scenery was nice, two pals sharing drinks around a lit fire. The sun was long gone by now, the fire contrasted the harsh night air as it enveloped you in warmth- Something you could get behind in your hazy state.
He thought for a moment before taking a swig from his bottle and turning to face you. “I’d think so, We’d practically have to be if we’re working in this type of occupation. The more people to keep you sane, the better.” You nodded your head while he continued. “This kinda loops back to what I wanted to talk to you about a couple of hours ago. Well, before we started talking about Tim.” He said, you thought back about your previous conversations and eventually pinpointed it to the walk in the woods. “About our pasts and junk?” You asked. He kicked off the dirt from his boot into the blasting fire. “Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it a lot actually, I’ve been so focused on being the Always-in-Line, harsh, perfect proxy that I’ve almost forgotten myself.” You slowly nodded your head. Hey, you kind of felt the same in a sense. You cringed thinking back to your previous memories.
“I don’t know Brian, the Boss always enforces that we push away the past and focus on our new responsibility at hand,” You paused. “Still, I get it. The tapes bothering you again?” He nodded before you heard a loud whack of a door slamming into the cabin’s exterior walls. You slowly shifted your eyes to the cause of the noise, and they settled on Tim. You shifted in your chair in fake-annoyance. Too drunk to care if he was with you two or not. “The past is the past, Hoodie. Get over it.” Tim scowled at the two of you before lighting a cigarette.  Tim walked over to the burning fire and crouched, He sucked in while he studied the flames, His eyes almost matched the fires bellowing rage before he closes them, blowing out his smoke into the already roaring fire. What a fucking weirdo, you thought.
“Evening, Masky.” Brian said. his boot still on the fireplace’s edge, almost directly across Tim’s face. Tim got up and took another drag and turned to you. “Now I’ve been wondering Y/n, how far you would go with a little booze in you.” Tim condescended, a smirk on his face and he eyed you. You rolled your eyes and got up, “Enough of the bullshit, Tim. You wanna be an asshole? Fine by me. I’m done with whatever game you’ve been trying to make me play.” You stormed into the house, your outburst leaving both the men in silence.
As you less-than-gracefully wobbled to your dark room. You undressed and changed into comfy clothing before retreating under your covers. Memories hung up on the walls around you. Pictures of you and your killer friends smiled down at you, the handmade bracelets Sally had gifted you sat on your nightstand. Dirty band tees Natalie and Jaime had once fondly given you on your previous birthday laid on the floor, ready to be washed and worn again. Small trinkets of your favorite interests decorated the room. Traces of you and your life swirled around your cold room, you thought about the previous conversation you had with Brian. Maybe it was the booze, or maybe Tim decided to finally crank up the heat, but you felt warm inside when thought about the people you met through this hellish job. Forgetting about all the anger you have for certain coworkers of yours, you sunk further into bed.
You grinned to yourself in the dark and shut your eyes, ready for bed. “I’d never regret accepting Slender’s offer.” You whispered slowly, letting yourself succumb to the night’s rest that eagerly awaited you.

A day early once again! Both because I want and because I got my first covid vaccine today and judging by my friends side effects to them, I'm in for a ride lol.

“Oh, Hiyori~”
Her eyes widened, pulled from the daze she was in from staring up at the chalkboard and her sensei. Turning to see Yato grinning widely at her side, she moved her notebook forward and flipped to a blank page.
What are you doing here?
He moved closer to her and leaned over her desk much more than needed, entering her personal space to read the note. “Well, I was kinda hoping you’d play hooky with me. It’s been a while since you’ve missed school, right?”
Hiyori chewed her lip in response as she wrote down her answer.
Define a while. Also, what’s the occasion?
“It’s white day, so it’s my turn to sweep you off your feet.” He wrapped himself around her shoulders.
Flushing, she considered his words before she wrote down her question.
Why can’t it wait until tonight?
“Let’s see. First, there’s the fact that Yukine can still hardly stand to be in a room with both of us at the same time because he gets too embarrassed. Second, there’s the chance of Kofuku following us even if we do leave the house. Third, I’m sure you’ve seen your classmates celebrating all day, so it’s only fair you get your turn…”
As he counted down the various reasons, she quickly scratched out her answer.
Okay, I get it.
He grinned in response and let go of her, taking a step back.
Hiyori took a breath, briefly closing her eyes before opening them again to focus on leaving her body. As she stepped outside of herself and next to Yato, she noticed him quickly reaching over to her body as her classmates all turned around at the sound of a thud.
“Jeez, Hiyori…” Yato gently removed his hand from underneath her head, looking over to give her a chastising look, “You were about to crack your skull open on your desk.”
She rubbed her neck sheepishly, “Sorry, I’m still getting used to leaving my body again…”
“Just… try to be more careful.” He reached out to cup the side of her face.
She nodded, “I will. So, where exactly are you taking me?”
“Hmm,” He hummed before moving his hand to hers and grasping it lightly, “It is pretty warm outside today, so I guess that sakura tree Yukine always likes to hang around would work.”
Hiyori tilted her head in surprise as she was pulled forward, “You didn’t think about it before hand?”
He shrugged his shoulders, “Eh, location is a minor detail.”
“For wanting to sweep me off my feet, it doesn’t sound like you planned it out very much.” She pulled away to put her hands on her hips, staring at him expectantly.
Yato moved his hand to his chest and gripped his jacket, feigning pain, “Now that we’re officially dating, I would think you have more faith in me, and yet…”
“I’m just a mixture of concerned and curious is all…” She admitted before giving him a gentle push, “Let’s keep going.”
He grinned and peeked back at her, “So you’re excited, then.”
“Of course.” She smiled back.
“So,” He stuck his hands in his pockets and leaned in towards her, “Do we take the long way or the scenic route?”
“It’s funny, those would usually be one in the same.” Hiyori gave another smile before she pointed out towards the large tree visible from the window, “But definitely the scenic route. I miss feeling like I can fly.”
Yato started to retreat down the stairs, announcing, “Scenic route it is, then.”
“Did you really just walk right through the front door of the school?” She moved quickly to catch up with him.
“Yeah? I mean, it’s not like anyone can see me.” He lifted his head to look back at her as they descended the stairs, “Would you rather I come in through a window?”
She sighed in return, “Of course not.”
“Besides, maybe I left something in your shoe locker for later so your friends will see that I stopped by.” He teased as they approached the lockers.
“Really?” Her eyes moved towards the area where her locker was but Yato quickly reached out to gently pull on her arm.
“No peeking.” He directed her forward and out the front doors. Letting go of her, he jumped up into the tree that they previously saw from upstairs, “Besides, this is the main part of your gift anyway. What’s in your locker is really just to show your friends I exist.”
Hiyori jumped after him, relenting though her tail gave an annoyed twitch, “Okay, okay.” As they traversed a few more trees and tops of buildings, she added, “And by the way, they know you exist.”
“They don’t think you’re just taking pictures of a random guy you know and saying you’re dating without his knowledge?” He raised an eyebrow as he teased, continually making sure to keep a wide berth.
Flushed, she huffed back, “No! They know I wouldn’t do something like that.”
“I’m just saying it could happen.”
“Besides, you take all sorts of pictures on my phone and they’ve been known to take it and look at it…” She added with a sigh, still bright red.
He finally paused at that, waiting for her to catch up, “What do you mean?”
“The random pictures you take of just me studying or like, I dunno, talking with Yukine-kun…” She looked down and twiddled her fingers, “They said you clearly like me a lot and it’s adorable or something like that…”
Yato gave a soft smile before taking her hand again, jumping downward as they finally approached the ravine where the sakura tree was located, “Well, it’s true.”
She was tempted to roll her eyes but gave a sheepish smile instead as he gave her another small look as they started to walk.
“Why are they so interested in your phone anyway?” He finally asked.
“I guess because I tend to not talk about the things that we do together a lot, you know, because of all things far shore related; so, they get curious.” Hiyori gave a small shrug, “That’s my guess, anyway.”
“Hmm.” Yato hummed in response, but she couldn’t quite read his expression.
Feeling a lurch in her stomach, she continued, “Of course, when we do normal things, I talk about you. It’s just—”
“It’s okay, Hiyori.” He tugged her hand to urge her down the hill, the sakura tree now in sight, “C’mon.”
“It’s funny, I think the last time I was here was when we did the hanami with everyone.” Freezing and suddenly jerking her hand away, her face soured and her tail twitched, “And you kissed Bishamon-san.”
Yato threw his head back in frustration at the mention, “My hand was covering her face! I kissed my own hand! Besides, I told you I don’t even remember that!”
She crossed her arms across her chest, “That definitely doesn’t make me feel any better about it.”
Staring back at her for a moment, he walked over to her and pressed a kiss against her cheek, “It’s only ever meant anything with you.”
At that, she softened and let her hands fall to her sides as she gently nudged her head against his shoulder, “I know. But thank you.”
“So, will you forgive me and sit with me?” He pulled away and walked backward towards the tree, giving a small smile.
“Yes.” She followed suite and sat next to him, her back gently pressed against the trunk of the tree, “But seriously… we should get everyone together again this year. I know it would mean a lot to Yukine-kun.  Maybe next week?”
“Whenever’s good for you.” He nodded along, “We’re just gods, after all. We have nothing important to do.”
Hiyori jabbed him with her elbow, “Very funny.”
He grinned widely, “I mean, honestly. Any time would probably be fine for most of those guys. Even though Ebisu always seems busy, he always manages to show up when we ask.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” She hummed contentedly.
Yato reached into his jersey pocket but kept his hand there asking, “So remember when I asked what your favorite color was before?”
“Yes, and I said blue.” She flushed again, but asked curiously, “So that has to do with a present, I’m guessing?”
“Mhm. But just curious, has it always been blue?” He raised an eyebrow, meeting her eyes.
She felt her cheeks growing hotter as his eyes looked into hers, so she looked away, “Not always. I guess I didn’t really have a favorite until recently.”
“Hmm, okay.” He acknowledged quietly, but she could tell he looked a bit smug when she managed to look up again, “So, I made this myself just like you made the chocolate for me, so hopefully it’s okay.”
She watched as he took out a small box and deposited something into his other hand.
After a moment, he took it into his hands and held it out in front of her; a gold bracelet with a small forget-me-not pressed in resin as a charm. “So, I went on color and meanings, not the name… despite the irony.” He gave a small laugh.
Gingerly taking it into her hands, she admired it, “It’s beautiful. But also, what is the meaning of it, then?”
“True love, a long-lasting connection.” He gave a sheepish smile, “Basically as many sappy things as you can fit into a tiny flower, it’s there.”
Hiyori laughed loudly before announcing, “It’s perfect. Can you help me put it on?” She held out the bracelet in her palm and held out her left wrist.
“Of course.” He took it gently before wrapping it around her wrist and closing the clasp around the chain. As she pulled away and he noticed it move around on her wrist, he asked, “Does it fit okay?”
“Yeah. I don’t like when bracelets are tight so this is great.” She reached up with the same hand to cup his face, pressing her lips to his, “I love you.”
“I love you too.” He answered before kissing her back.
After a beat, she pulled away and whispered, “So… what exactly is in the shoe locker?”
“Jeez, the curiosity was killing you, huh?” He laughed loudly.
Hiyori pouted and huffed, “Don’t tell me you wouldn’t be the exact same way.”
“Oh, I would. I just didn’t expect it from you.” Receiving only a small glare in return, he continued, “It’s just a note and some chocolate. Store bought, since like I said, this is the main gift. Yukine helped pick it out since you two always seem to like the same stuff.”
“Okay. Now I make it through the rest of school without having to peek.” She nodded before she moved closer to him and let herself sink into him, “Thank you, for everything.”
“You’re welcome.” He nestled into her hair.

Ok, so I had to do this after reading @justasimplesinner ‘s absolutely adorable and precious h/cs for Arkham Knight Riddler meeting his s/o’s family for the first time. I mean, AK!Eddie being happy? Having some sort of family? It hits me right in the feels 😭
But I was inspired to write something similar for Telltale Riddler and his s/o but with a twist. I mean, it’s already going to be quite different considering how Telltale Riddler is, but I’m taking things a little further and getting a bit personal. Since I self-ship with him, I figured, why not turn these h/cs into self-insert ones?
Basically, Telltale Riddler meeting my family for the first time on Christmas.
The h/cs will reflect what the reality of my family is like but I won’t get, like, too personal. Y’all don’t need to know everything.
Pre-headcanons warnings to be fair:
There is a little but of smut at the end. Nothing explicit but it’s a little bit spicy.
These are self-insert headcanons, not reader-insert ones
This is an age-gap pairing since I’m 33 years old and Telltale Riddler is 60 years old.
Anyway, let’s head on into these h/cs for Telltale Riddler meeting my folks for the first time (and that seems awkward as hell to write but hey, I’m fictosexual so....🤷‍♀️)
There is a little bit of smut at the end. Nothing explicit but it’s definitely a little spicy.
It’s the first Christmas spent with Eddie since becoming a couple, and it’s also kind of an awkward time because family, you know? And, well, my parents don’t know I’m dating anyone...let alone THE Riddler.
It’s going to be a challenge getting them to accept me dating someone nearly twice my age (I’m 33 and Edward’s 60, but damn, did he age like fine wine or what?) But revealing that it’s the goddamn Riddler?
So, yeah, I’m freaking out but I also realize that I have to tell them eventually because it’s only fair, for one, and keeping it a secret for a long time would just make things worse if -- or more realistically, when -- my parents found out on their own.
Plus, I’m not ashamed or afraid to date Edward. He treats me much differently than he treats most other people, and I want my parents to know that, yeah, he’s Riddler, a criminal mastermind but honestly, he treats me better than any guy has and I’m actually happy.
Edward isn’t nervous but he’s concerned because he doesn’t want to complicate things between my parents and me, doesn’t want to bring unnecessary drama and angst into my life. He can handle people disliking him -- hating him -- but he doesn’t want the only person he’s ever truly cared for to have a damaged relationship with her family because of him.
But we discuss it and decide it’s better to just go ahead and do it. Rip off the band aid and get the pain out of the way as fast as possible, so to speak. Whatever happens, happens, and hopefully it’s nothing (too) upsetting.
I call my parents and tell them I’m coming to visit for Christmas, and I reveal -- while my hands are shaking and my heart is pounding from the anxiety consuming me -- that I want to bring my boyfriend.
Oh, I have a boyfriend? For how long? How did we meet? What’s he like? What’s his name? Why the wait to tell them about him?
I know it wouldn’t go over well to just show up at my parents home hanging off of the goddamn Riddler’s arm, like, “Oh, hey, my boyfriend is a criminal genius, don’t ya know?”
So, I approach telling them over the phone the truth slowly, cautiously. I say his name is Edward and we met kind of by accident and we’ve been dating for a good portion of the year. It’s my first Christmas with him, actually.
Wait, it’s been that long and I never told my them?! What the hell?!
Needless to say, they are baffled and also concerned about this news.
I explain the awkward but less, uh, shocking news that he is an older man, and I was worried they’d be upset about that. They ask how old Edward is and I hesitate, wondering if I should lie and say he’s, like, in his early 50s because he could easily pass for that age. Hell, even I thought he was in his early 50s (or even very late 40s) when I first met him.
However, honesty is the best policy, and this is not even the “bad” news yet.
I say that he just turned 60 years old this year in a calm, cool, casual tone, like I’m talking about the weather and not revealing to my parents that I’m dating a guy who is my dad’s age.
There is silence and I internally panic because if they’re angered or appalled by this, they’re not going to handle finding out who Edward is well at all.
They are surprised, a little worried for my wellbeing because they think Edward’s some perverted Sugar Daddy to me. They don’t say it like that but it’s heavily implied.
I explain that’s not the case at all, that he’s actually very sweet towards me.
My folks decide to go along with this bit of news because hey, I’m 33 years old. I’m an adult. I can date an older man if I want.
Then comes the “fun” part, which is revealing to them what Edward does for a living.
I laugh nervously, and Edward, who has been patiently sitting beside me on the couch, realizes what I’m about to tell my parents. He watches me closely, hoping this doesn’t turn into a disaster for my sake.
“Yeah, so, Edward, yeah...Edward is...well, he’s, um...Well, he’s, he’s a genius. Like a tech genius, great with electrical engineering, computers. And uh, his job, his profession, his, um, career? Yeah, that’s...well, he’s...”
I take a deep breath and prepare for the worst.
“He’s The Riddler, one of Gotham’s...elite....masterminds.”
The silence on the other end of the phone is so terrifying that I feel like I’m going to faint from how anxious I am. Edward places a hand on my knee as a means of comfort, still wanting to give me some space to breathe and calm down.
My parents aren’t...thrilled, to say the least. I’m dating a fucking criminal mastermind?! I’m dating RIDDLER? THE RIDDLER? What the goddamn fresh hell is this?!
I start crying because I’m so stressed about this, and Edward moves closer so he can put his arm around me. He feels bad, he really does, and it shows in his troubled expression, but there’s not much he can do. It’s not like we can take this back and say, “Oh, hey, just kidding!” No, this was the truth and now we were dealing with the consequences.
I manage to get my parents to calm down long enough so I can get a word in. I get up off the couch and walk to another room to speak to them alone.
I tell them I know it’s not the most pleasant news to hear, and I know it seems awful, but it’s the first time I have been with a man and he’s treated me well. Like, really well. It’s not just the nice gifts or expensive dinners. Edward does genuinely care about me. I don’t feel like a “booty call,” he doesn’t ignore me, he doesn’t threaten me, he’s never abused me and never will. He’s not the same person with me as he is with some other people. I wouldn’t be dating him otherwise.
It takes some more convincing, but once I get it through to my parents that yes, I’m actually happy and yes, I’m safe and yes, Edward is a very doting boyfriend, they decide to meet him at Christmas. I know they will still have concerns and may be a bit cold to Edward at first, but I hope they would see what I see.
The day arrives and I’m a nervous wreck. Edward is worried for me. He  assures me that everything will be ok, and I want to believe but I’m still scared.
Deep down, he thinks maybe dating me is a bad idea -- not because he doesn’t love me but because he feels like he could damage my relationship with my parents. However, he doesn’t bring this up as he doesn’t want me to be even more upset than I already am.
Edward had brought with him some gifts for my parents and my grandma (she was staying with them, too). He brought the most most beautiful bouquet of flowers and a necklace for my grandma, a very lovely diamond bracelet for my mom, and a high-quality (aka expensive) watch for my dad.
I had to dress to impress and by that, dress in things Edward had given me to give my parents more visual proof that he was taking care of me. But I was careful not to overdo it. I didn’t want my parents to think I was his piece of...eye candy.
When we arrive, my parents greet us at the door, giving me a much warmer welcome than they give to Edward. They’re not rude to him, but they look uneasy, even a little irritated.
Edward, being the charming bastard he is, keeps his calm and showcases his gentlemanly side. It’s genuine because he IS quite the gentleman as I have learned, but I don’t know if it will be enough to convince my parents to accept him.
They appreciate the gifts, seem a little caught off guard by the pricey but very lovely things Edward bought them. They also notice I’m wearing a dress that cost a pretty penny and jewelry just as extravagant. But none of it’s gaudy.
Basically, I don’t look like Riddler’s trophy girlfriend.
Edward is courteous and charming, which seems to help my mom relax a bit. My dad still looks rather tense, though.
My grandma, being 90 and having frequent issues with memory, doesn’t remember who Edward actually is. My parents told her but she had forgotten and it was probably for the best.
My grandma is impressed with Edward, finds him to be a proper, handsome gentleman type. She also was very grateful for the gifts he brought her.
Edward is very patient with my grandma, which I know isn’t easy due to her memory problems. But he is very relaxed, behaving pretty much like he does around me.
We all have dinner and chat, and the tension in the air lightens. My parents even laugh at a few humorous comments from Edward. He thanks my parents for allowing him to visit and for the wonderful dinner, and offers to help my parents clean up.
Good. This gives my parents time alone with Edward which, as nerve-wracking as it is for me, is something that needs to happen. They need a one-on-one with my boyfriend...and hopefully it didn’t turn into a mess.
I stay with my grandma and act like everything’s fine as I anxiously wait to find out what my parents will ultimately think of Edward.
They are upfront with him once they’re alone with him, asking him if he’s putting up some kind of act or if this is all really him. They also ask if he genuinely cares for me or if he’s just using me because I’m “young and pretty.” They don’t hide their feelings, my parents, and they are concerned for my safety and happiness above all else. They NEED to know that Edward is good to me despite being Riddler. They can’t tell me who to be with but it would put their mind at ease if they were assured I was in good hands.
Edward is honest with them. He isn’t putting on a front. He is gentlemanly by nature with people he likes and respects, and he’s a bit old-fashioned in some ways anyway due to his age. He doesn’t fake his feelings for anyone, and while he does want my parents to accept him as my boyfriend, he knows it’s not an easy choice. He also tells them they have every right to reject him, and he won’t hold a grudge towards them about it if they do.
If anything, he’s earned scorn more than kindness due to how he’s lived his life, and that’s fair. He accepts that.
But then he explains that no, I am not eye candy for him. He’s not a play boy looking for a “good time.” He’s serious about me and feels things towards me he’s never felt--never expected to feel. I’m the one thing in his dark and violent life that is bright and soothing, even though he’s done nothing in his life to deserve such a sweet and caring partner.
He tells them that I’m always protected and cared for, and he has made arrangements to ensure I’m still protected and cared for if -- or more realistically, when something happens to him.
Being Riddler’s girlfriend has its perks. No one messes with me, that’s for sure, because they know I’m important to him, and they know what he is willing to do to keep me safe.
As scary as that is to hear, my parents find some relief in that. Yes, Edward is The Riddler, a criminal mastermind who strikes fear into many. However, he takes care of what is precious to him -- and not much is precious to him. Actually, nothing is save for me. I bring him a lot of joy and much-needed peace, and he’d give his life to protect me.
I deserve to be happy, he tells my parents, because I am a good person unlike him, and he works hard to make sure I know I’m loved and cared for, that I’m good enough and that he has no intentions of leaving me or cheating on me for someone else.
Edward also assures my parents that, should they need anything, he can provide. Of course, he won’t force his help on them but he won’t ever turn them away either. He looks out for those that mean a lot to me, who are close to me, regardless of who they are and how they feel about him. That is a promise he makes to my parents, too.
He also comments on how they have been taking care of my grandma pretty much on their own for a couple years now, and he knows from what he has observed and from things I’ve told him that it is a very exhausting duty. It’s an admirable one, though, for sure, and he respects my parents for being good people.
He sees where I get my kind nature, he tells them.
He says that he can pay for live-in help for them, like a live-in nurse, someone who can help take care of my grandma and let my parents have a break every now and again. Also, should she need anything that isn’t covered by her insurance, he will cover the costs.
Same goes for my parents, who aren’t the healthiest people in their old age (Edward has the regenerative properties of the LOTUS virus on his side -- they don’t). He doesn’t tell them that obviously, that they’re unhealthy, but he says should they need any expenses covered for treatments, medication, etc., he can provide.
Because he is THAT serious about me.
My parents are, to say the least, much more confident in my relationship with Edward now that they’ve talked with him one on one. They give him their blessing, so to speak, to be my boyfriend, and appreciate his generosity. They do ask for help with live-in aid for my grandma, and Edward says pick who they want and he’ll pay whatever insurance won’t cover.
I am beyond relieved that my parents have decided to accept Edward, and am so grateful to him for offering his help to them...because they need it and deserve it.
He tells me it’s no trouble at all, that whatever makes me happy makes him happy, and he’s more than willing to aid those that are important to me.
Edward and I stay over Christmas Eve so we can spend more time with my family on Christmas Day. We get the guest room which has a small bed, so we’re “forced” to get close.
Of course, I can’t resist tempting him even now, and he doesn’t turn me down. I do warn him that we have to be careful because, hey, my folks are here in this house and I’m not the quietest lover.
“Oh, don’t worry,” he tells me with a smirk. “I came prepared for any eventuality.”
Needless to say, I need to be gagged because Edward makes sure I have a Merry Fucking Christmas -- literally -- and also makes sure I know how much he both loves and desires me.
We decide to leave out the whole Dom/Sub aspect of our relationship in regards to my parents.
We also don’t tell them about how I call Edward, “Daddy” almost any other time 👀👀👀👀💦💦💦💦💦💦
My mom also refuses to believe he’s 60 years old because he’s so good-looking  😄
